The gentleman is very knowledgeable in his area and conducts a productive class. However, he has a tendancy of being quite rude and arrogant at times, especially if you have difficulty in understanding his assignments or the material set forth
Very insightful class from a knowledgable guy. Can be sarcastic sometimes but not mean. I only recommend this course to "deep" thinkers, as normal people may find work hard. However, hard VERY BAD THINGS about his Contemporary Ethics class.
Knowledgable, however his classes consit of him reading his book at you. I can honestly say I wrote over 45 pages for this class. More work then I've done for any 3 classes combined.
an ok guy..very hard quizzes, tough material to understand not a very good teacher
i took this class over the summer and absolutley hated it one of the most boring classes ever
I had this class as a home study course so i only saw the prof. about 4 times all semsister. He seemed alright to me, but some thought he was a burnout from 70's. You have to do alot of readings and vocab but you can use note cards for your test. He is not an easy grader, you also do 2 papers .
I took his home study, he doesnt teach but the explains what you have to do and gives you examples. He grades a little strictly, even for a course that is all written. be prepared to write till your hand hurts 4 times, although you only have to take 3 tests. Most writing I've ever done and only a B.
He basically sucked. He didn't have to make this meaningless stuff so hard!!
I have my BA right now,but went to OCC for a few classes.I hated him more than any teacher I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable in his field, but he also has a one track mind.If you disagree with what he says, even if you can support it, you are wrong. Bite your tounge and agree and you do ok
I took this class online and regreted it. The assignments are difficult, the quizzes are insane, and overall this teacher is way too difficult!!! I do not recommend anyone taking this class online or this teacher for that matter.
Baker isn't worth it...assignments are terrible...cases are hard...quizes make no sense...reading is herrendous! work for your grade.
He assigns a lot of work. He is not really clear on the assignments which could be answered either way so there really shouldn't be any wrong answers, but he will find them. Avoid him if you can
A poor professor, tries to make a subjective subject very objective. He is the only one who is correct!!It's philosophy, not math.It was a total waste of time and money taking him. Because it is such a nebulous subject, he is trying to prove its worth, which is not much. Find another class and or professor unless you like bad experiences.
Very boring. This man takes himself way too seriously for an Intro. class. You have to write a paper every 2 weeks which gets lengthier and lengthier as the weeks go on. You also have to work out cases in groups each day. He likes to critique people, and get on your case if you make an argument different than his...even if yours makes more sense.
often came in late and disheveled. Tough-really makes you think about your answers. The papers were very tough to get good grades on. Not an easy class to pass, but very interesting nonetheless.

Prof Baker's class was interesting. He's a pretty funny guy. I would take him again.
Prof Baker's class was interesting. He's a pretty funny guy. I would take him again. Some people think he's argumentative, I think he just likes to argue ANY point whether he agrees with it or not. Very entertaining. The work was easy if you paid attention and showed up to class.
PHIL 191 is, basically, evaluating arguments. He does a good job of covering a variety of fields, and he criticizes your evaluation from the viewpoint of the philosopher who presented the argument. There are lots of quizzes, and there is extra credit. Two papers, as well. Try to read the material and elaborate your thoughts, and you'll do fine.
Yes the work is hard, but as long as you study and are able to support your positon, you'll do fine. I would def. take this prof. again. I took online course and if you're not planning on putting in the time, then this is not for you.
He assigns alot of work! If you take him online - be prepared to spend alot of time with this class. No matter how much effort you put into an assignment, he wants more. He does give you an opportunity to revise your graded work and resubmit them for a better grade. (only some assignments) I got a B, but that was by the skin of my teeth.
prof. baker is a cool, open-minded guy. he may give a lot of work, but it does help you learn...and he always makes class really fun, b/c he's nuts! in a good way :).
He's incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, he'll argue any point that you make regardless of your stance simply because it makes you think out your arguments. He lets you know exactly what is expected and when it's due well in advance and he grades fairly. I would definately take his class again. It's not easy but it's worth it.
Super interesting. Loved his class. Guy is prickly - not so nice, but he is brilliant!
a very divisive guy. you'll either love his arguemntive style or think he's a total ass. he's actually very knowledgeable and witty and makes lectures entertaining and relatable. a tough grader who really makes you work for your A's, but makes himelf very available for help. be prepared to do serious work though. recommded highly.
Worst professor imaginable. I took him online for Ethics and hated it. He doesn't try to help with anything, and honestly doesn't care if you do poorly. His course is designed to make you do badly. Most people had D's or failed. I've never gotten a C in my life and did for the first time in this class. Horrible, do NOT take!
Since I have to type of comment here... I'd have to say it was pretty easy, but there was just so much time that had to be spent on the homework etc.
He's alright, I am taking his online Philosophy class right now. He doesn't respond to emails very quick, and when he does, he sort of responds so that the whole class can see it, which in a way is good, but it depends on what you are asking him.
I have no interest in philosophy, and after taking this class, I still don't! Prof Baker gives you ridiculous homework and asks ridiculous questions about each philosopher, I would never recommend him and would never take another philo class again after taking this class. Very unhappy!
Baker's cool.. I would take him again if I needed another class he taught.. he's not easy.. he pushes you to think.. but that is what philosophy is about.
I was surprised to see all the negative comments on here about him. He's very fair, funny, and his class is interesting. All quizzes are online, and there are no tests or homework. You do have a paper every 2-3 weeks. I suggest taking his class if you want a fun, interesting class, but not if you are looking for an easy A..you have to work hard.
Im taking his online Into. to Philo. He is very professional and helpful and has always answered my questions promptly. The work is not as bad as i thought it would be, i think its because i can do it at my own pace. Im planning on taking his Ethics class next semester. The work he gives is not hard, as long as you try your best your set!
Didn't really care for him. I took him online and his assignments were very ...lame. There wasn't really anything interesting about the course. I was pretty disappointed..
Baker was ok. It was a good class for getting other work done. Alot of it was discussion. No test or homework, just online quizzes that you could take twice which was nice. They were easy, the answers were word-for-word in the packets. The lectures got boring sometimes but the topics were intereting and the papers due every 3 weeks were long.
Ridiculously hard. I write 5 pages of notes before I take his quizzes and get a C, maybe a B (if I'm lucky). Asks questions that you know aren't in the book, you have to really search for them. You can spend days attempting to write the perfect paper and he won't give you the A.
Worst Prof i have ever had. Took his ethics class twice failed the first time, decided to take his online class thinking it would be cake since I took the course once before, well an assignment that I got B+ on the first time somehow got me a 62 the 2nd time around!! Not clear on grading, not willing to help and does not care if you fail. WORST PROF
Excellent teacher w/ great cirriculum
Took him online: extremely dry. Weighs heavily on ongoing participation in the discussions. Assignments were graded fairly tough. I feel like I didn't really learn much, but maybe it's from losing that class discussion atmosphere.
Im taking 5 classes, Im spending more time on this class than all of the others combined, Im getting A's in all the other, and so far im getting a C, ive never worked so hard in a clas ever, I spend at lease 25Plus hours of work a week for this class. AN have never done so poorly. Im beginning to wonder if An A is even possible
I'm currently taking Prof. Baker's class online and I love it! Learning how to form a proper argument is hard but he makes it interesting and offers plenty of exercises to practice. It makes you think (hence the course title). Don't take this class if you are not really interested in putting in an effort. He's fair and generous with extra credit
Taking him now. Does alot through the computer which could be annoying to some. Quizes online are very hard and confusing. Doesnt give enough time or enough information to get a good grade on quiz. Knows what he is talking about however fails to make students understand material. Not recomended
No matter how hard you work, you will get a bad grade. I'm use to A's, this class does nothing but discourage me, and I'm an A student, or I was. This class crushes the enthusiasm had.
Class completely killed my enthusiasm on my first semester back. I have A's and B's in all my other classes. This class was awful and I would not recommend it to anyone. Boring and pointless material not to mention very hard to comprehend. Students literally snoring right in front of me. I severely regret taking this class.
Professor seems like a fair guy, gives extra credit, other than that there's no interaction with him. Subject matter is interesting, but this class is no easy A. Do not take this class if you don't want to use your brain!
I had him for a ethics class and he is soooo boring, I usually fell asleep. He doesnt choose to hate you for sleeping, he will never remember your name. But he only gives six quizzes, open book open notes. and excersizes, which he gives you an example for them all and basically says to use it all in your own words. no homework, no readings, nobook
He is a fair professor, but he is extremely boring. He doesn't really give clear lessons, or maybe he is just so boring that it all sounds like rambling. You have a paper due every week almost, they are short but his questions are worded in a confusing way and they are hard to answer. It felt like he didn't want to be there.
This class is extremely hard and the tests on online are not easy to pass. I would recommend someone to not take this class. You probably will end up getting an F for your final grade.
I took Dr. Baker's online 5 week intro to phil course and i actually found it pretty interesting. THere definately was a lot of work and you had to participate in discussions but he was very clear about what was expected of you and also very responsible about giving back grades so you know how you are doing. I would definately take him again.
I took Dr. Baker's online 5 week intro to phil course and i actually found it pretty interesting. I definately had to work hard each week but I appreciated that it was very organized and I knew exactly how I was doing and what was expected of me. I would deifinately take him again.
He is so boring. This class is bringing down my GPA. The notes are never clear and never help with the quizzes. The online tests are extremely hard and never have anything to do with the notes or the book. It is way too much work for a general education class. It is so boring and he doesn't know how to teach.
This Critical Thinking course that I took online with Dr. Baker was very enjoyable and interesting. You print out all the needed materials so there was no text book to purchase. He responded to emails quickly and offered extra credit. I'll be taking Intro to Phil with him in the future as well.
I took his class online, and it was the worse mistake I've ever made!!! It was very hard, and the test, were so hard to pass. I do not recommend this class, or this teacher....He is not helpful, and his extra points aren't worth anything!!!
Great professor, I took this clss online and had no problems at all. I would recomend him. He is fair: if you do your job, you'll be great.
His a nice man but he will grade you poorly and I'm an A student. Even with all the extra credit I'm getting a C. Plus he's very boring.
Very nice man, although class is very boring. puts me to sleep can not pay attention. his voice is monotoned which is the reason why i can not stay awake or pay attention. And because of this i dont understand a lot of the material, which will bring my GPA down
I took online philosophy and I feel that his grading was very unfair. In order for you to do well on the exams, you need to know your current events. He tied political events into exams so if you are not savvy, you won't do well. Many questions were very subjective, even with valid arguments no credit is given. A waste of my time and money.
People probably think he grades unfairly because he expects a lot out of you and demands a thorough understanding of all concepts. With extra credit and good notes (all tests are open-note), you can pull a B/B+ easily. Maybe even higher. Just go to class.
Baker is a nice guy but I cannot recommend taking 191 with him, unless you need to. The class is extremely difficult, and I feel like I've gained nothing from it. I can't imagine getting an A in this class because everything I say or write is wrong unless the question only requires a one word answer. I say save your time and GPA and look elsewhere
I took his class online and the way it was all graded was terrible. I would put the most posts on a discussion and still get a failing discussion grade. The tests are on 90 page chapters and you get thirty minutes to do them. I thought I wrote great papers then end up getting Cs with no explaination why. STAY AWAY
This guy is a blast. I had him for philosophy and did not do much of the work. He really puts effort into grading and takes it seriously. I didnt do well on almost everything we did and I still passed with a B. Plus he's always talking about dead babies. I love this guy. Take him.
Horrible Teacher. Does not help you at all. Does not elaborate on material. No communication.
This class was extremely difficult and the work requires a lot of effort but if you write alot on your assignments you'll be fine. His tests come right from the book, in the beginning i was overwhelmed but as the semester went on i got the hang of how he liked the work done.
Before I start, I failed this class. So my review may be biased. It was a 9am philosophy class. Didn't use a book, instead you had to print out ~30 pages a week. It was an elective for me and I'm still graduating without the class, so none of the commitment he called for seemed necessary for me. Personally, would not recommend him.
Simply put: his lessons can be confusing because each point made is contradicting another. I don't know if that is because it is philosophy or he likes being cryptic.I took critic thinking online so it was difficult not being able to ask a question about the reading.
I loved him! Such a nice man. Class is Definately hard but if you show interest he will do everything he can to help!
HORRIBLE. No structure, we need to read 30 page word docs, and his quizzes are extremely hard. I have a good work ethic and a 3.7 GPA and am failing this class one month in. Ihave decided to withdraw because it is not worth the aggaggravation and boredom of his monotone lectures about NOTHING. I would not recommend at all. Nice guy, poor professor
He took a boring subject and made it fun. He was very helpful if you have any questions. The material was so confusing but he did his best to make it easier.
He gives you many chances to improve your grade and he expects you to actively think about the subjects. He is knowledge in what he teaches and he is a very nice professor.
Super nice professor and really knows his stuff. I was just bored with it, only took for credits. Lectures for the whole class and you do all the work online. He is a tough but fair grader. Went to his office for help with quizzes and papers he is super nice and helpful if you reach out. Nice guy, just not into philosophy, not my thing. No tests.
No tests. This class is entirely online. Quiz, essay, and online discussion every chapter. He drops the lowest grade of each at the end of semester. Offers a TON of extra credit. Lets you redo papers and even email him to correct before submitting. You get two attempts, sometimes 3 for quizzes. Lecture is boring, the book helpful, take online.
I enjoyed Professor Baker's class. Moreover, I really learned something. All of the quizzes are online and you can take them over, and there's plenty of chances for extra credit. He does expect you to work for your grades with your papers. He's an interesting guy who can teach you something if you pay attention.
I am an English major and this is the most writing intensive class I've ever taken. Would not recommend if you are taking other classes and work. Way too much work for an Intro course. You will spend 5 hours writing an exercise only to have him make comments and scrutinize every little thing on it. Too demanding of a course at this college level.
He's a nice guy and is always willing to help his students! If you are confused about something he'll make sure you understand before you leave his office. He speaks in a monotone voice. He's a very tough grader! There's not a lot of work to do for the class but expect to do your best on assignments! This is not an easy class!
Was not expecting this hard of a class for intro to philosophy but It isn't impossible to pass. As long as you work hard on the papers he assigns and try your best on the quizzes you should pass. If you're looking for an easy class I would not take this class.
For an INTRODUCTORY course, I felt like this was a very difficult course. It seemed like everything I said was wrong (in all fairness, that's sort of the point in Philosophy) but I still ended up more confused than enlightened. Class was dry, papers were hard, lectures were bland (monotone).
I learned a lot. He can be tough but he is really funny.
Did not expect this class to be this hard. He is a interesting guy, but the lectures are very boring. Every other week there are group activities on the lesson he taught. Very tough grader and you are pretty much always wrong. He always has something to say.
Had him for intro philosophy when he first started midsemester extremely smart and makes the topic interesting able to Use concepts from class after graduation from OCEAN COUNTY college at Stockton. Wish I could have taken more classes with him
I have had Dr Baker for two semesters now. Each week you get one online discussion, and every two weeks is a quiz. For the semester you get to choose four papers you would like to write. His class is not extrememly difficult, but it is also not a walk over. Discussion is huge in his class. He's great philosophy professor, and I highly recommend him
Protip: if you're looking for an easy A, this ain't the guy. It's not even an easy B. I never worked so hard for a B. The class is fine, but my summer Film class was a lot better - easier with better movies with more modern (ahem, not boring)movies. Also, the class feels more like I'm taking philosophy than film. If I wanted Plato, I'd study Plato.
DO take Baker if your looking for a semi-easy out with philosophy. DONT take Baker if you actually are interested in philosophy. He is dreadfully boring, he lectures off powerpoint& thepowerpoints don't ever help with the online tests, it makes you have to read the book to pass the tests. BUT, he sets it up for you to pass If you actually try.
Dr. Baker lectures the entire class, and people often say he is boring, but if you really like Philosophy, his lectures are not that bad. He is willing to work with students to help with their grades, and is lenient with attendance. He often goes over PowerPoints the entire class, and gives a fair amount of homework. Not a bad professor overall.
Professor Baker was an okay professor. His lectures seemed to drag on for a long time and they were a little boring too. His quizzes were hard to pass because the notes he shows in class are different from the test material. Other than that, he seems like a nice guy.
He gave some writing assignments but it wasn't overwhelming. His quizzes in Ethical Issues are a bit difficult and the questions are mostly from the textbook, so the book is a must have.
This professor just wasn't personally for me. I was annoyed at the fact that there were constant online discussions when this was not an online class. I really tried to understand his lectures and pay attention, but they were so boring and went on forever. If I could have a redo, I wouldn't take him again. I liked him as a person, not a professor.
Great guy, monotone lectures but extremely laid back. generous grader especially at the end. online discussions (easy 100) and a paper each chapter, their is also an online book in which is free so you save money here. however, if you dont read the chapter or pay attention, it will be a little difficult to complete papers. not a bad class at all.
I dont like philosophy but Baker was a great professor. You really need to use the book for everything but the grading criteria is very clear. He also grades everything right away so you know where you stand in the class. He answers any emails you send him very quickly and is very understanding.
I'm a straight A student and got a B in his class. The online discussions are torturous. Also, the online quizzes were very tough for me, and I see myself as a phenomenal test taker. I understand all of the concepts, yet still could never pull an A on the them. The lectures meaningless and don't help your grade. Cool guy but not the best prof.
