He is often behind the department course schedule by a little bit not because he is slow but because he takes time to really explain out everything in a way for everyone to understand, as long as you pay attention in class and remember formulas and charges its easy to pass every test. clickers used to take attendance every so often. (not always)

Dr. Blumling is amazing. I had him for lab and it was extremely easy and beneficial! If you go to his office hours or study sessions he will explain everything you don't understand and will go even further to show you some problems and solve them with you. Not only is he a great professor but he is an awesome person, get to know him! TAKE HIM

Although I had him for lab, from the people who took his lecture, Dr. Blumling is amazing in both. Very reasonable, explains everything, but if you don't pay attention, it's on you, although he will tend to guide you in the right direction if you truly don't understand something. Lab reports were just powerpoint presentations.

Chemistry isn't an easy class, and a lot of it you have to read on your own. The confusing stuff Blumling goes over and is very helpful with, and is also very helpful in his office hours. Go to multiple pass sessions the week before the test and you'll do good on the tests.

Dr. B may be one of the best professors at JMU, which says a lot considering it is his first year teaching here. He is personable and very professional (despite his skater shoes + blazer combo). The guy takes his own time to makes videos explaining concepts more in depth that you can access outside of class if further clarification is needed.

Blumling was very clear with what is due when, lots of practice quizzes. He gets straight to the point while teaching, and very good at how he approaches every question he gives. Blumling is awesome! I had him for 131 Lab last semester and he was the best. Only 2 formal lab write ups (which saves a lot of time), and I even went to his office hours even though I didn't have him for lecture and he helped me anyways. Great guy, get to know him, he's hilarious!

By far one of my favorite professors here at JMU. He is very clear and helpful during his lectures and provides many resources for everyone to do their best. 4 tests but he drops one and a final. Homework due online just about every class and can be frustrating and time consuming. Overall, great teacher!

Dr Blumling is awesome! This was my second time taking this class and he made it so easy to understand. He uses great examples and makes sure you understand. I loved having Dr. Blumling for lecture! He is very organized and you can tell he really cares about helping his students. During office hours, he will go over the same concept multiple times until you understand and doesn't make you feel bad about it. His weekly study sessions are also very helpful. One of my favorite classes/professors!

I retook chem131 with Blumling over the summer and I was so pleased with my decision. Prof Blumling truly cares about his students and wants them all to succeed. He really is available almost any time of the day to help you out and answer any questions he can. The online homeworks are challenging but he will help you through them!

Blumling is great! Chemistry 131 is a very tough class no matter who you take, but Dr. Blumling makes it managable. 85% of your grade is based off exams/final, so you will have to study a lot to get the grade you want. He is young, energetic, and defintely knows his chemistry. He wants his students to do well, and is available for help always.

He is the BEST chem 131 professor. he has weekly study sessions where he basically gives out test questions. His lectures are so important because that's whats on the test. his test are pretty easy. drops 1 test. he also has easy grades to boost your final grade up.

I took Blumling for Chem 131 lecture at 8am, so I thought I'd be asleep or be tempted to skip, but Blumling is such a great teacher that I almost always attend. His lectures are clear and he does a lot practice problems. He makes chem very understandable. Also he doesn't make you get a textbook which are like $200, so you save a lot of money.

I had Blumling for 131 lecture at 8am MWF. I never skipped and went to office hours all the time because he was super helpful and caring. He tried to give examples to help us understand the material, which was actually helpful too. He is genuinely a cool guy and he is super easy and nice to talk to. Tests are eh; easier than most.

The best professor I've had at JMU! Couldn't have prepared us more for the final exam and he is always willing to meet for extra help! Go to his study sessions and study for his exams and you'll be fine! Will recommend him to anyone, he is such a fantastic person and professor!

Actually the best chemistry professor you could ever have!! Chemistry is a practically impossible course but I rarely left class confused, he was always so clear in his lectures and was so easy to understand. Recorded and posted his lectures and gave lots of examples. Drops your lowest exam. Overall, he just really cares and I miss him so much lol.

Although any chemistry course is hard, Dr. Blumling really wants his students to succeed and he tries his best to help everyone to understand the material. Literally one of the best professors at this school!! He cares so much about all of his students and very helpful during office hours. Sometimes the lectures are not super comprehendible but he explains way more in depth if you go to his review sessions of office hours! His tests are worded hard but he just wants to prepare you for the hard final.

Definitely take GenChem with him if you can even if its an 8 AM. When he lectures for the first time, it is very comprehensible and he goes at a reasonable pace. He even posts his lectures online after class, but attend because of the clicker points (graded by effort). Only downfalls are MindTap and the cumulative final. (131 & 132)

Had him for CHEM132, lectures are straightforward and easy to follow. Test questions pretty easy.

I loved Dr. Blumling! Such a great lecturer and does so many example problems! Even posts his lectures online after class, but go to class cause he grades on clicker participation. His exams are pretty straight forward and he usually sends out a a list of everything you should know a few days before the test. If you're taking gen chem TAKE HIM!!

He is an awesome teacher. His lectures are great and you should go to them because you can get points for participation, but if you miss one or two its okay because he posts his lectures online and drops a couple participation points at the end of the semester. his extra review sessions are really helpful, you do have to study though.

Blumling is an amazing educator but also has high expectations for his students. His tests are fair but very, very tough. Expect many hours of homework, MindTap assignments can be ridiculously complicated and I almost always needed a tutor to finish them. His lecture is long but he makes it interesting and throws some humor in. Dont expect an A.

I had Blumling this semester for one of the new experimental labs and honestly he is one of the best teachers Ive ever had hands down. He easily can relate with students and genuinely takes an interest in helping them succeed if they are willing to put in the work. Hes also hilarious and makes labs from 6:00 - 9:00 pm on a Thursday night amazing.

His class is very test heavy(55% of final grade), but he gives you access to previous exams which are very beneficial for studying!! Mindtap can be a lot of work but is really helpful when learning the material

Blumling is a good professor, but the class is THE hardest class I've ever taken. DO YOUR MINDTAP WORK, it takes at least an hour each night, but its basically your only other grade besides tests and clicker points. Go to his review sessions, PASS sessions, & any other thing you can find. I hired a personal tutor and still didn't pass the class lol

Honestly this class was kind of tough, but all the resources are provided to you. He gives you an old test to study as well as a practice test, posts his lecture recording a online, and powerpoints. He also drops your lowest test and tests are 55% of your grade. He made chemistry interesting for me and I loved him. If you pay attention PICK HIM.

I wouldn't say Blumling is an excellent professor but more so that he understands that chem is pretty hard and adjusts his exams according to what he teaches. Mindtap sucks and is so much work but it definitely comes in handy because his questions are very similar to the HW. I didn't really pay attention in his class but studied MT and ppts.

I was in the pilot lab where we basically didn't have manuals and we had to figure out what to do for each lab "scenario." If he wasn't the professor I probably wouldn't have liked the class. He's a 10/10 professor that is really funny but definitely knows what he's talking about; he cares about everyone and will help you if you are struggling.

Yes, chemistry is not a super easy subject, BUT taking it with Blumbling was the best thing I did. His lectures are super helpful and not boring. He is very nice when you go to his office for help. Attendance is taken through clicker points in class. If you go to outside help like office hours or other resources on campus you extra. credit.

Professor Blumling is an amazing guy. He makes lectures so interesting. But be warned, you will not do well if you don't do the online Mindtap assignments. They are super easy, there are just a lot of them. But they really boost your grade. Only thing i dont like about Blumling is that he has your grade locked the entire semester. He really cares!!

GO TO OUTSIDE OFFICE HOURS!!! I only started going towards the end of the semester and it was so so helpful. He is fun during lectures and explains things multiple ways for different learners to understand. Quiz every other week like the other 131 classes, but tries to pull from other chapters to quiz on too so you can continuously review.

Love Dr. Blumling! He is very helpful outside of class, which is where I got most of my help. He really cares about his students, lets you make up homework, and takes away quizzes and clicker points to help your grade. He makes a weed-out class more manageable and very interesting as well. Take him if you can!

He's a good professor for CHEM 131, and he really cares about his students. Attend lecture as much as possible because he uses clickers, but he does post the lectures on canvas. The quizzes are cumulative, so make sure to go and ask for help if you're stuck on something.

Love this guy! Wish I had him for lecture. He is awesome! No complaints other than it is a huge adjustment to get used to how he does things in lab. Very funny and helpful. Hope I can get him for 132L.

Hands down best professor I've had at JMU. He makes difficult concepts simple and is always receptive to questions & makes himself available for help outside of class. Took Gen Chem over the summer with Blumling as a retake. Ended with SUCH a better grade in the class, and more importantly a better understanding. Blumling is so funny and intelligent, and he makes class worth paying attention to. He breaks down complicated concepts and creates simple ways to remember exceptions or things you need to memorize.

It's a typical chem class but is the best teacher I've had. He doesn't go too fast and records the classes so you can watch the lecture online if you miss. The only homework is online modules, which can take a while to complete if there are a lot for that day, but each one isn't too long. He is an easy going teacher and easy to approach

Professor Blumling is a great lab professor! Chem 131L can be challenging, but he makes it fun and always gives good feedback. He grades your posters and presentations a little hard, but always gives you good feedback to help improve the ones in the future. Would not want to take lab with anyone else!!

CHEM 131 is HARD- but if you take advantage of PASS, do your mindtap assignments, and come to class you will be fine. He's very accessible outside of class as well.

Dr. Blumling is a tough grader, but he makes up for it by being hilarious, personable, and very good at explaining concepts and procedures. He's not afraid to tell you if you've done something stupid. As long as you stay on task all 3 hours of the lab and ask questions, you'll do fine. He won't put your grade on Canvas til the end of the semester.

Dr. Blumling was fantastic when I had him for CHEM 131. He knows what he is teaching, and he genuinely enjoys chemistry. His tests are fairly difficult, and his true or false section is notoriously tricky. Every time I went to office hours for assistance, he was very caring and helpful. If you want to exceed in CHEM 131, I recommend going to pass.

Great professor for CHEM131. Anyone that complains about him as a teacher didn't take the time to try and learn the material or just didn't go to class. Really works through problems and prepares you for the exams. Drops one test grade as well. If you don't understand something, GO TO PASS SESSIONS!

Good teacher but soooo much homework!! Online homework sets due every day you have class and it can be easy to forget. No tests, but quizzes that count as tests (20-26 questions average). Quizzes are a bit challenging! Esp the true/false section! I did not go to most lectures even tho you get points. Ended with an A-.

I took Dr. Blumling in the summer and he was a great guy. Obviously chemistry is hard but he is a solid choice for chem 131. I took it in the summer and it was online, so most of the work and material consisted of Mindtaps which werent bad.

Dr. Blumling is a great teacher. He did online lab this semester for the first time but it went surprisingly well. We worked in breakout groups the whole semester minus one or two individual assignments. As long as you keep up with your lecture class and have a good group of lab partners you will do well! He grades by effort rather than accuracy.

I had Blumling (and Baber) for the winter Chem 280 course and even though it was only 2 weeks, I feel like I got to know him really well. He's super funny and really chill. If you have the opportunity, take his class, great professor and explains chemistry so well. This class was easier for me to understand than 131 because of how he explains things. If you are a visual learner like myself he the professor for you.

I took him during the June Mester. Considering I had him for 131, I felt he did not put as much effort in the summer class as a regular semester. His Canvas page was tad confusing at times/ a little disorganized. Honestly even though it was a rough, intense, and crazy month, I would recommend for you to take 132 with him if you can. I really enjoyed Dr. Blumling as a professor, but I wasn't a huge fan of how the chem131 department did their combined course this semester, but he did some lecture in class which was nice. He's amazing at explaining things, but youre really only graded on 4 quizzes (one is dropped). Theres SO MUCH outside work that doesnt do much for the grade

This class was great! Dr. Blumling gave lots of feedback and was willing to work with students. You get assigned lab groups, but mine ended up being pretty good. The class itself was a bit of a Kobayashi Maru at times, but you weren't graded on correctness so much as your thought process and evidence. Absolutely, take him if you can.

The class this year was kind of weird. Lectures are done online and then worksheets are done in person so it doesn't really matter which professor you have for lecture. Blumling is super smart and good at what he does but he wasn't really able to do that because the department made lectures online. Solid choice if the format of the class changes.

I took his lab when we were still mostly online, but he was so nice. Never had him for lecture, but gives lab instructions pretty clearly, and answers any questions. Easy A.

Blumling's lab is brewing beer- halfway through you do a group project. He made our groups do insanely difficult+research heavy projects that has left groups working for 4hrs instead of 3. Other professors let their groups do insanely easy projects+get to leave early. Take him if he's the best option, but if you can get another good one, pick them.

Dr. Blumling is a great professor but there are definitely more simple options. His lab is brewing beer which is fun but time-consuming. Other classes did easier labs and got out early, but Bluming ensures you learn something. Not a breeze, but definitely not bad at all. I wouldn't worry to take him if he's the only available. Use lab time wisely.

Dr. Blumling is my absolute favorite. I had him for 131, 131L, and 132L, all of which were amazing. Take him if possible, and get to know him personally. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Ask him questions in lab and admit when you are confused or don't know an answer to something. Presentations are super laid back and fun!

took the 4-week summer course which is definitely a lot of work and hard especially for me who isn't very good at chem but maintained a B through the course the final just brought me down. Test every week including the week of the final. He truly is a great professor and willing to help you throughout the session.

Unlike most of the chemistry dept. Dr. Blumling will actively help you and guide you on the right path to get through chemistry. Chem 131 is a VERY hard class and will take extensive work and time outside of class. Dr. Blumling cares about his students. He is very accessible outside of class to help you, & will give you so much advice on how to do better in his class. The Exams are worth a HUGE part of your grade so make sure you keep up with the material. Lots of HW.

I took Chem 131 w him spring of 2022. Chem itself is SO hard, and this class requires a lot of studying, but I promise he's great and wants to help you. I went to PASS sessions and office hours and it was so rewarding to get A's on exams because of that. Yes its online heavy and group work heavy but just hang in there!!! You got this.

Definitely probably one of the better choices for CHEM132L. This lab is not simple or easy as there is intensive research for our end of the year project, but I learned A LOT from his class. He is pretty funny at times and can be a bit of a smart aleck which I find kind of funny, just don't take it personally lol. All in all, a very good option

Dr.Blumling is great. Most of the semester you will be working in teams to solve worksheets and the team will be selected by him. You will have to watch embedded questions videos for each module before the class. The MindTap exercises are pretty easy and quizzes are manageable if you practice. Lots of practice. Definitely recommend him.

Blumling is a nice guy, but the most important thing to have is a good group. If you have a terrible group you are stuck forever he won't change groups up. group projects are a bit difficult but nothing too bad, you will be making beer the entire semester so be prepared to smell like beer when you leave. Blumling is nice and funny - you don't interact with him much because the class is online but the experiences I had with him were all very positive. I would take an in-person class with him if it was an option.

Great prof, most definitely deserves the average of a 4.8. Only complaint is he goes very fast during lecture which led me to take a lot of notes outside of the classroom. Also only does one quiz correction for the five quizzes while Dr. Q has quiz corrections for all quizzes. HUGE curve on the exam don't stress.

Amazing professor. Cares about his students and their learning. Always willing to help. Lots of homework but to be expected in chemistry, and the problems help with the tests. Super fair grader.

What a KING. Chemistry is hard as it is, but he made the class fun and truly wants everyone to do well. Office hours are great if you are struggling, and great even if you just want to do homework. Take him if you can!

I took MAX chem and it was so worth it. If you have space for an extra credit, take it!

TAKE DR.BLUMLING!! He cares so much and his office hours are great. He makes sure everyone understands and takes the time to do so. 6 quizzes (-22questions), revise one for credit + drop one. Cumulative final. Homework once a week and in class assignments (-10 questions). You will love chem after him!!!

Chem water lab was a challenge but he is very helpful and if you put in the effort you will end with an A. Grading is reasonable but not essentially easy which is expected. Recommended!!

Chem 132 Water lab was pretty boring material, but Dr. Blumling made up for it! He was extremely funny and easy to approach. I wish I could've taken him for lecture as well! The class itself is very straightforward and manageable, and you complete your own group project (based on things you've already learned how to do) during the last few weeks.

There are a LOT of assignments for this class but they help you prepare for the ~biweekly quizzes. The quizzes are pretty straightforward; he does not try to trick you and he drops the lowest one. You can rewatch/redo any of the pre-class videos at any point and he opens the Aleks assignments at the very end of the semester.

One of the best teachers I've ever had

Honestly one of the hardest classes I've taken, but blumling makes it understandable and is really funny. Lots of work, but he teaches it well.

Dr.Blumling was an amazing professor!I spent a lot of my time in office hours which helped so much with comprehension.The class was a lot of work but it paid off for exams (his practice were much harder than the actual exams but you needed to understand the material to do well).The ACS final was AWFUL but I enjoyed the class (AND I like chem now).

132 is hard no matter what teacher you have but he makes it somewhat manageable. You watch videos before class, he does practice problems during class, and then you do in/out of class questions on ALEKS. You have 6 quizzes and he drops the lowest one and allows you to do corrections on one. Hosts zooms so you can watch that if you don't go to class

Girlypop girlboss. Easily one of the best professors I've had so far. His lectures are entertaining and relatively short. He usually lectures for around 30 minutes, and then the rest of the class is used to complete a short assignment. His quizzes are straightforward and match the practice quizzes pretty well. Take him if you can!

Dr. Blumling is so sweet and constantly checks on his students throughout class. I only went to about half of the classes and did well (85-97) on the exams besides one, but it was dropped. I actually really enjoyed having in class questions and homework bc it was the way I learned better. Flipped classroom but they all are in chem

Just watch the pre-class videos and take notes on them and you will be fine. I thoroughly watch every single video and don't have to study a whole lot for exams. Take the practice quizzes on Canvas and Aktiv, and the actual tests will be easier. Multiple choice, drops the lowest of 6 exams. Material is hard but he makes it manageable. Love him

He's a great professor, he's super positive and funny, comfortable class environment, and he really cares and wants his students to succeed. He gives exam extra credit, offers many sources to learn from, and I highly recommend the concept videos, which he makes himself, and the PRACTICE QUIZZES on AKTIV, because they are just like the real ones.
