Clear, logical, humorous, and always ready to help students both in and outside of class. One of the best professors of my freshman year.
Very fun, laid back class. He uses Simpsons clips to make his points! Major plus. Tests are moderate with a little bit of studying.
Awsome teacher, the best of my freshman year.
awesome guy. fun class. hard tests.
won't take in class questions, you have to wait for the discussion sections. the class is mostly OK but he presents a biased version of the philosophy surrounding abortion, and he showed a video from right to life.
awesome, and helpful in class! simpsons clips are always welcome!
fun guy
He is incredible, his ability to be awesome is amazing. He really listens to the students and he is fun to watch. It was a class I actually enjoyed going to.

this is the class you'll be dying to go to everytime. lol ok maybe not but he's simpson clips always kept me entertained and related it all to philosophy. good guy but his tests can be a challenge.
the best professor i have had in college. he is an awesome professor.
he's the best, hands down, if you are going to take philosophy, take it with him.
Bonevac is an entertaining professor & a good guy. His tests can be a little challenging, but as long as you read the text you should be fine.
Fun Professor, His lectures are very interesting and will keep you awake. Multiple choice Tests, 3 HW Essays, Attendance Optional, Must do Readings!
Amazing professor. Makes philosophy interesting with simpson's clips and personal stories. Must go to class and do the readings or you'll be lost. He's a great lecturer. His class is lots of fun. The tests can be difficult if you don't do the practice test first. Bottom line: great prof. Take his class before leaving UT.
Take him if you can. Great teacher!! You wont know what the heck he is talking about sometimes, but them he explains it in easy terms(relates philosophy to football, baseball, the simpsons, ect.). Funny guy too.
His midterm and final were EASY! Both have extra credit questions on them, and the test itself is pretty easy if you've paid attention and done the assignments for his class. Very funny.
Awesome
I am in love with Dr. Bonevac!!! He is the best professor I have ever had. If you are thinking of taking a philosophy class I definitely recommend taking one of Dr. Bonevac's classes.
pretty good class. i wasn't in his philosophy class this was a general studies class called ideas of the twentieth century but the class was well put together and interesting. you write a few short 1 page reaction papers and a couple tests for your grade.
Dr. B is pretty much one of the best teachers you can have! He's one of those adorable funny old guys you just want to sit and have tea with :) also word of advice: you can get by with just studying the power point notes, some of the philosophers are incredibly mind-numbingly boring. tests are mult. choice, & just 5 essay assignments.
He's funny, easy-going, and his class isn't very demanding, but he's sort of all over the place and unclear.
His lectures are at the same time simplified, summarized, dense, lively, stimulating. He's a good actor. Sometimes his conservative opinions shine through.
He is an amazing lecturer! you never get bored in class while he talks. He loves it when students participate. There is never a wrong answer because well its philosophy. He incorporates the Simpsons a lot in his lectures as examples. I love the class. However, the tests are a bit difficult. If you go to the office hours, he will help you.
The Ideas of the 20th Century was a fun class. The tests are kind of hard so beware, but not too bad. There's a lot of essays in this class and the TA discussions are weird and unhelpful. However, Bonevac is awesome and very helpful and understanding. He let us take a class vote on dropping on of our essays, super nice guy and smart.
I was disappointed with this class. Bonevac, in Ideas of the 20th Century, spread ideas so thinly that just as you were grabbing on to one concept, it was ripped away and a new one was introduced. Get ready to study art, photography, philosophy (!!!), history, literature, ethics, politics, etc. Too broad of a subject to really engage in.
Honestly, Bonevac was a really cool professor, but the assignments of his class were just graded more difficultly than I had imagined. Bonevac is an awesome guy, but the grade of the class relies solely on your TA. I had a lazy TA with unconventional grading and it lead to a lot of stress. For his tests, study the powerpoints, the practice exams.
Bonevac is an amazing professor. The lectures were really interesting and kept you listening, however, his TAs are awful. I got stuck with the hardest one and would make 75s on papers while friends would make 100s. I loved the professor and the course, but I would never take another class from him again if he has the same TAs.
I HATE PHIL but he was a great Prof! Only 2 midterms and a Final with 8 reflection papers on confusing material. Not much wiggle room for grades. I rarely went to class and walked out with an A but because I POURED over PP and readings night before exam. Avg. final grade was 77. Tests are hard. Don't take as blow off course cuz it could back fire.
Lectures are sporadic, not very organized. Professor is very resourceful, interested and knowledgeable about the class. Standard A, B, C system, no plus minus.
Bonevac's a great teacher. There was a midterm and final, but they're only quotations from the readings and ppts. If you show up to class, then you'll have nothing to worry about. His lectures are fun, because he's super passionate. TAs can determine your grade because of papers, but if you have an issue, Bonevac WILL work with you.
Great professor. Passionate and funny. Five short papers, graded by TA. If you want to skip discussion, make sure your TA is chill. A midterm and a non-comprehensive final, both of which are multiple choice and just memorization of key quotes and concepts. Generous grader, tries to make sure everyone who tries passes.
Bonevac is seriously the most interesting man in the world. I took Ideas of the 20th Century, and it was pretty enjoyable. There is a bit of reading, and a couple of papers but he really listens to his students feedback--go to him if your TA is grading weird. I went to his office hours and he is really helpful and let me take my final early!
Super nice Professor. Some concepts are confusing, but he tries his best to explain it and is very lenient with grading. He genuinely wants you to understand the material and tries to make the boring parts as interesting as possible . Encourages discussion, and never puts down an answer, but rather tries to incorporate it into the lesson.
Love him as a professor! He's super personable and he made lectures fun to listen to. Grades are determined by TAs who will be grading essays (some are a LOT easier than others). Tests are decent, just pay attention and make sure you get the key points. I made.
He's a great lecturer who really loves what he's doing. He does a really good job at giving general overviews of different philosophers' ideas and how they relate with other philosophers' ideas. He really knows how to engage the class, often showing the Simpsons in class. He's a big part of the reason why I'm now double majoring in Philosophy.
Professor Bonevac is my favorite professor at UT in the time I have been here. His lectures are interesting and he always uses good examples to illustrate the ideas he's trying to convey. He's a pretty funny guy and an overall great person. I would take this class again in a heartbeat.
I'm glad Prof. Bonevac was one of my last philosophy professors. He always made the content interesting (his impressions are hilarious) and is interested in his students' success. Don't skip as attendance is one of the only grades in this glass besides a long paper due as your final. Probably my favorite philosophy professor at UT. Take his class!
100% recommend.
He records all of his lectures and puts them on YouTube, so if you want to see what this class is like go watch a lecture. 1 midterm, 4 essays over 3 assigned books, and one lecture paper. This class is pretty hard for a UGS especially if you aren't into history and philosophy. There are a lot of daily readings as well that are lengthy.
Bonevac loves to talk (and fast). Lots of information is covered and it's hard to see how it connects. The tests are ridiculous - questions over minute details. It's impossible to read everything, but you need to read a lot. Most of your interaction and grading is with a TA. It was nice the lectures were also available online but I never used them.
The smartest man I've ever spoken to. So much so, it's hard to have a convo with him. Anyways, attendance isn't mandatory but if you start skipping early on you'll fail the final like I'm going to this Friday. You'll have a 99 in the class like I do right now because of the easy online quizzes, but it won't matter in the end. *DONT SKIP!*
Professor Bonevac is an amazing professor! He truly cares about his students actually learning the material instead of focusing on grades as some professors like to do. Lectures are not mandatory, but it's a great disservice to yourself not to go, as his lectures are very intresting and often hilarious. I would definitely recommend Dr. Bonevac!
Weekly quizzes, four essays, and one final so do well. Philosophy isn't my thing so it was hard for me. Bonevac is really cool though and tries his best to make it easy. His jokes are corny and awkward which makes them funny. Always wants to take about his 20 cats. Go to discussion!!! Read read read!!!
Amazing professor. Make sure you don't skip classes from the beginning (it is so hard since attendance isn't mandatory and he uploads lectures on youtube). Keep up with the lectures, take good notes and enjoy the class! It definitely teaches you a lot of stuff and he tries to make it interesting with personal anecdotes and corny jokes.
Loved Dr. Bonevac and this class! Made confusing concepts much easier to understand. Very fair grader and takes TA toughness into account. Crazy intelligent but approachable. He used Simpsons clips as examples. Always happy to talk with students, gives advice, welcomes student feedback. Loves what he does. Endearing, engaging. TAKE HIM!
Bonevac is an awesome lecturer and he tries his hardest to use every day examples to make difficult concepts easier to understand. He is VERY understanding that you have other classes and a life, so he moves due dates to give extra time due to holidays or other inconveniences. He also records his lectures and puts them on YouTube. TAKE HIM!
I had a 96 in the class. After the final, my grade dropped to an 87. Don't underestimate the final. The quote part was easy. The MC after the quotes was the hard part. out of the 45 MC I knew maybe 10 of them. It was straight up guessing after that. Quizzes every week. 3 papers. Not to mention a lot of the stuff you learn is boring.
He knows what he's talking about, and if you reach out to him he will listen. He's respectful and respectable, class isn't difficult especially if you're into philosophy. Keep up with the quiz questions to do well.
Good teacher and can be scattered but is passionate about the material. However, your grade relies mostly on your TA and some TAs grade really tough while others are lenient. Reading will prepare you for the discussion class and papers. Enjoyed the material even though I'm in STEM. Do not take this UGS if you want an easy A.
Free 25% online quizzes, 5% discussion attendance (1/wk, can miss 2) rest is all written, so know your TA and make sure they know you, by name. You do not need to go to class, but bonevac is passionate and the stuff is interesting. 25% final, hard (72 avg but doable, use quizlets) Dont buy the history book!!! difficult A, find another UGS
This is by far not the easiest UGS credit, but it's not that bad. My TA was amazing which helped because they grade. Bonevac has great lectures and others that make you want to fall asleep. THE FINAL IS AWFUL, so keep up with the work and make sure you have a lot of slack going into it. Also find a group to take quizzes with, they will save you.
Cool dude. I loved his lectures, some people did fall asleep though. The class is basically powerpoints he posts online, but I still took notes. There's a quick quiz every week, but this is a large portion of your grades. Paper grades are important too, only about 5 papers, 1-2 pages long. Only those who skipped had trouble
Deep existential crises may ensue... Hilarious, brilliant professor. Use of Simpsons/Rick and Morty clips to explain concepts. Pay attention in lecture and the textbook is only supplementary. Quizzes are easy A's. Keep track of the material, though, because you have to know the content to pass the final. He doesn't take attendance, but show up!!
The class itself was easy... up until the final. The final exam was VERY specific, and covered very minute details that seemed unimportant to the main idea of lectures. Making your own study guides for people and ideas, as well as reviewing/memorizing past quizzes helps tremendously. MY TA (Ben) was great, too. Find another UGS -- NOT AN EASY A.
Great professor, but the class was pretty hard. It was a philosophy course. I am a chemistry major, so philosophy is not my forte.
Great prof with interesting lectures, nice and approachable. Attendance wasn't a grade. Class was mostly essays that were graded by a TA so mostly depended on them. The final was pretty difficult though, had a high A heading in to it, studied a lot, but it still knocked me down to barely an A- , a lot of people did badly on the final.
he gave out a lot of info in his lectures so going to class is a good idea. reading the assigned texts really helps you understand what is going on in class. hes a really cool dude and makes so many Simpson references. easy to talk to and get advise for papers. the only thing is theres no tests just a final with all the info from the whole year.
He is a genius but pay attention because he talks extremely fast. Applies philosophy to the Simpsons which is always entertaining.
This class was pretty good, and the workload was very manageable. There are quizzes due at the end of every week, and there are 4 papers written over lectures and books. The final exam can maybe destroy you if you have been googling all of the answers for the quizzes, because then you won't know the information. Start studying for that early!
Professor Bonevac is a nice guy, but he talks too fast and often loses his train of thought. It's hard to keep up with what he is lecturing on because he goes off tangent very often. Philosophy should be taught by someone more concise.
Dr. Bonevac is an okay professor. He's very knowledgable on his topics and all but can also be hard to understand. His lectures are sorta like rambles of sorts > hard to follow. Not the best if you're detail oriented.
Bonevac is fantastic! This class was fun because of him. This class was actually pretty hard, but he's a great professor.
Dr. Bonevac is awesome. He's a very interesting lecturer and is hilarious. He can go very quickly through difficult concepts but he records his lectures every class and then posts them online after. If you're looking for an easy UGS this is not the class for you but if you have any interest in philosophy take it.
Posts slides online so you don't have to go to class. Papers only kind of relate to the course material. Only two tests, a midterm and final, that are 50% of your grade. The rest is made up of papers and quizzes. The quizzes are 25 questions in 5 minutes which sucks. A tough class if you don't care all that much for philosophy
UGS Ideas was an interesting change of class for me as an engineering student. Bonevac has really interesting lectures and knows his stuff. At the same time, his exam is really specific. You'll have to read two books and write two essays which aren't terribly hard but can be stressful with the time constraint.
Dr. Bonevac is really adorable and is really passionate about what he teaches. I wouldn't recommend for people who do not care about philosophy. Take an easier UGS class bc this one is really test heavy!
My favorite first semester professor. You need to like philosophy, reading, history, thinking about thinking. If you don't, you'll be miserable. I found every lecture interesting and enlightening. Only a few grades, though. Justin is the best T.A., he just catches you off guard at first. Prof. loves this stuff, and lecture feels like a documentary.
I learned so much from Ideas of the 20th Century. Note: it is neither purely history nor philosophy. When I asked Bonevac, he described it as an "old school humanities course" that combines both. 2 papers. 2 short essays. 2 tests. Weekly quizzes. If take & study quizzes then tests are manageable. Med-low grades occur to slackers. Failing is rare.
Although PHL 325L was an interesting class and Bonevac is one of the best professors in his department, the class definitely had its imperfections (due to Bonevac's first time teaching the class). Students final grade was determined by two tests and one term paper. Neither were particularly hard but having only 3 assignments adds difficulty.
interesting topics but usually ran out of time to explain at the end of lectures.
Great and dynamic professor, but very difficult class. I'm interested in philosophy so I was excited to go to each class, and he makes it really digestible (relates a lot of the concepts back to the real world and pop culture). However, the concepts are hard and the tests are hard too, so def don't take this for an easy A
The most brilliant professor I've ever had!!! You almost can't believe that you get to listen and dialogue with someone of this caliber! If you're at all philosophically inclined, you'll love him!
Love this professor. One of a kind. A captivating speaker who is very unique, brilliant, and witty. Youll be hard pressed to find another professor of this caliber teaching a class at a university.
Smart and witty
Ideas of the 20th Century. Pretty easy class, mostly tests identifying authors. A few essays, but your TAs really determine the grades on those, so ask them questions about requirements. An easy enough course, but fairly dull and Bonevac is eccentric and often confusing. Few tests or assignments.
Nice/smart man but very difficult tests. Lots of quote memorization.
I took PHL 301 with Professor Bonevac in my first semester of freshman year. Quickly I found it to be useful to work with a group to do quizzes and that the practice exams he posts on canvas are very helpful. Professor Bonevac is an amazing lecturer and very understanding, all the midterms are reasonable but the final was hard. 3 papers 3 exams
He's an inspiring lecturer, very quirky with how he talks. Although I do have to argue his testing and readings do affect the class. It's very specific and unless you are willing to fully comprehend every philosophy concept, this will be harsh waters for tests.
I took UGS 303: Ideas of the Twentieth Century in Fall 2020 when everything was online so keep that in mind. This class was taught entirely through seven-year-old Youtube videos and weekly discussions with a TA. How good your TA is can make or break you. The weekly quizzes are not too bad since you have three tries. No tests otherwise. Only papers.
Dr. Bonevac is brilliant. His lectures are encompassing, insightful, and clear. I highly recommend taking any of Dr. Bonevac's classes so you can hear his lectures.
The thing which made this class so difficult was the grading criteria: it was NOT clear at all. It seemed as if the TAs if asked could rarely tell you what they truly graded for in your essay so therefore each essay (there were A LOT and they weren't easy) would be graded entirely differently even when the type of essay would be the exact same.
He's a very intelligent man but his lectures are boring and very fast. There is an insane amount of readings which are long. The quizzes are all about memorizing quotes from dozens of readings (which is extremely difficult). Essays were graded tough and there was never a clear rubric for them. There are def more interesting and easier UGS classes!
He is passionate and informed ab philosophy. His lectures are long, slow, and boring. There's a few papers over the semester graded by the TAs. They expect you to be able to have a colligate level philosophical analysis in these papers even though it's a freshman course & they don't teach how to write them at all. Not suited for nonphil majors.
Such a kind teacher who genuinely just wants his students to care and learn about the material. It is obvious that he is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, and is really entertaining. His lectures always go by fast as he makes the content relatable, has good humor, always takes questions and seems to be just a happy guy.
I'm taking his Organizational Ethics class and he is one of the best professors I have had. He is always enthusiastic and actually understanding/helpful. Breath of fresh air in a rough semester. He assigns 5-10 page readings for each week (not always necessary to read) & very few homeworks. definitely recommend!!
Bonevac is a great lecturer and Ideas of the 20th Century is an incredibly easy class. Most of your assignments are quizzes that can be taken 3 times for the highest grade and the majority of questions are quotes. Most of your important grades come from TAs but since Daniel is an important professor he gets the best ones. Easy, worthwhile class.
As a bio major, this class was a nice change of pace. Lectures were fun, and quizzes were manageable. There were about 4 papers, but the readings for them were interesting. Overall a great UGS course!
Such an amazing teacher. He actually cares about the subject and gives entertaining lectures. You don't actually have to attend class or do any of the readings. There are no tests or final-you're only graded on easy quizzes and 5 essays, 2 of which are super short. Your grade does heavily depend on which TA you have, though.
I absolutely loved Dr. Bonevac's class, as it was both interesting and laid-back. Dr. Bonevac was funny, lighthearted, and passionate about making students think. Grades are based on weekly quizzes (3 attempts) and several papers which are pretty straightforward. TAs grade the papers, so hope for a easy grader as it will determine your grade.
Hated this class, there are easier UGS options. Had to spend way too much time reading, he rarely finished lecture power point slides, and he made several lectures weirdly political. It is possible to do well but if you want to ever enjoy philosophy after this, don't take this class
If philosophy isn't interesting to you, DON'T TAKE IT! Grading is based entirely on easy weekly quizzes and 5 essays. My TA was incredibly vague about grading essays and the professor responded to my concerns only months after I emailed him. It got really frustrating especially since there was no proper feedback in order to do better on essays.
Took the UGS for credit but loved the course! Super interesting. The course was presented as a lot of work but when you really got into it, it really wasn't a lot at all.
UGS303 was just mediocre. The whole class was just boring. If you don't like philosophy, good luck in lecture. However, it was very easy to get an A-. tbh you don't really have to go to class if you don't want to, you don't need most of the info from lecture. Bonevac is kind of an oddball but he is at least funny.
Professor Bonevac is so sweet and really cares about his students. He's a great professor and pretty funny, so his lectures are always engaging. Grade is based on weekly assignments that are usually really easy as long as you have a basic understanding of the readings of the week. Overall, a really great prof and relatively easy class
Prof. Bonevac has a very upbeat, engaging and goofy (in a good way) personality! If you pay attention, you can really learn a lot in the class especially from the powerpoints. 12 assignments total (mostly short writing essays 500 words max and about 3 short quizzes) only best 10 are taken. No late penalty. Great if you enjoy philosophy or business!
Loved his UGS class so much that I'm planning on taking his philosophy+business class in the coming semesters. If you're interested in philosophy but not a philosophy major or anything like that, I think this is one of the best UGS classes to take. It gave me such an excellent foundation when looking at current events and earlier philosophy.
Easy class. You don't need to go if philosophy does not interest you. Make sure to attend and participate in discussion and you will be fine. Weekly quizzes (online) and you get 3 attempts. A few papers throughout the year but they are extremely easy prompts. If you need a UGS, this class is perfect.
This was my last choice for a UGS and it wasn't too bad. I am not interested in philosophy so this class was not very fun for me, but its easy to get an A. Dr. Bonevac is a great professor, and the assignments are pretty straight forward. It may be an uninteresting class if philosophy isn't for you, but it is an easy A if you're looking for a UGS.
Professor Bonevac is great! The class isn't especially difficult, and he does his best to make lectures engaging (including cute cat pics)! As a lover of the humanities, I greatly enjoyed his combination of history, literature, art, and poetry as a segway to learning about philosophy. I definitely recommend this UGS!
Super easy UGS course, don't need to go to lectures but Bonevac is very kind and good at lecturing. Take if you want a free class and need the UGS credit.
Definitely the most unique lecturer I've ever had. Clear concept explanations and tangible material made this class a break from my others to go to lecture. My TA was super lenient so halfway through the semester I stopped going to lecture all together since grades are papers and online quizzes. I wish him the best for his health.
If you are looking for a caring, funny, and great professor for this class, this is the professor you want. You can tell how much Bonevac enjoys what he is talking about and I'll admit, I'm not the biggest into philosophy, but he made the class enjoyable and interesting. Highly recommend!
Bonevac's lectures are fun because of how animated he is, and he explains abstract concepts with good examples. If you're taking this class to learn about philosophy, you'll like the class. If you're looking for an easy A, you'll love it too because there are a few short essays that are graded very leniently and short easy quizzes(online).
There were weekly quizzes but they were easy and you can easily find the answers to them. Basically don't have to go to discussions or class because everything can be found online. Have to write 2 papers on books but summaries are good and TAs are easy graders.
The class is super easy and you really don't even have to go to lectures to get a good grade in the class. Just read the books for the papers.
Professor Bonevac made material that I found boring to be somewhat interesting. No exams, only a few short written assignments that you have to read a book for, and attendance is not mandatory. Overall, an easy A, and definitely a great choice to get your UGS done.
Best professor at UT
Ideas of the Twentieth Century is a fantastic class. Bonevac is an amazing orator and deeply cares about teaching. Even if you don't like philosophy, this class is wonderful. Quizzes are not hard, and you'll do fine on papers if you make the effort. Discussions with TAs are engaging and fun, and my TA, Andrea Villalba, was particularly great.
The only people rating Dr. B high are the ones who enjoy Philosophy. There were 2 exams worth 40 percent, the midterm and final, a term paper worth 40 percent, and random quizzes that were 20 questions in 8 minutes. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR AN EASY ETHICS OR CD FLAG!
He is quirky. classes are boring and he posts all online so thats nice bc class isnt mandatory. there are 2 tests (which is new) he used to not have tests just a final paper (10-15 pgs). The tests are one page and are difficult, and really specific on topics if you dont study or know quotes from tons of philosophers. Did not enjoy.
The people complaining are either lazy or just dull. If you just show up and listen, you don't even have to read super carefully. If you want to load your schedule with easy A's (and graduate w/ no more knowledge than you started with) then don't take him. If you want to learn interesting things from a great professor, then I recommend Prof Bonevac
Professor Bonevac is one of UT's most respected. He is incredibly engaging and well-respected across campus, although the class is a bit difficult. If you want just an easy A, perhaps you might want to look otherwise. If you really are interested in philosophy, this is right up your alley!
60% of the classwork was just essays. If you hate writing papers this class isn't for you. Attendance isn't required and the finals worth only 15%. The topics themselves were confusing and all over the place. But overall, passionate professor. If you're looking for an easy UGS credit I would recommend him
Not too sure why everyone is raving this UGS. So if you have to pick a UGS literally pick any other one, especially if you don't care about philosophy. this UGS was scheduled 4/5 days a week and you have something to read before each class. The assignments are easy yes, but the TA's grade so harsh for things with no rubric. He's nice but it's a no.
If you are looking for an A, take UGS in spring with easier courses. Sure, he's a great lecturer and his classes are entertaining for the first week or so, but class attendance plummets afterward for good reason. No rubrics besides a vague syllabus and overall course is pretty TA dependent on essays. TAKE OTHER UGS IF YOU NEED 4.0
Do not take Prof. Bonevac if you want to pass UGS. He gave a final with 65 quotes that is worth 15% of your grade. He is also pressed that students do not show up to class in an attendance optional class and grades students unfairly. UGS should be a course that is passable for students who put in the work and accessible for non-philosophy majors.
Professor Bonevac is an amazing lecturer who makes the content really interesting. There are weekly quizzes with a short time limit but aren't difficult if you put in a little effort. There are two papers (1000 words) that aren't hard if you read the books. There is a final exam which isn't hard if you go over the presentations and attend lectures.
The class is mainly graded on 2 papers that are okay for a ugs, weekly quizzes that aren't difficult, and the final. Yes, the final this year was hard but not impossible if you put in enough time and studied. I didn't pay attention at all in class, but I studied all of the slide packs and got over 100 on the final. Definitely doable if you study.
Very nice guy with extremely entertaining lectures. There's weekly quizzes and barely any homework. However, much of the grade is dictated by TA-graded papers that were graded harshly despite no rubric being given. The final was very difficult but mimicked the practice one. Most people complaining didn't attend class (avg 30% went to lectures).
The final was a harder compilation of all the quizzes through the year, but not open book or internet. half memorizing quotes, half ideas. I advise learning the content as you go instead of googling all the quiz answers (like I did). Papers are pretty easy, didn't attend lectures or spend time outside of taking quizzes. Harder side of UGS classes.
Graded only by papers, paper peer reviews (completion, basically), attendance, and a paper rewrite at end of sem. FANTASTIC lectures- doesn't make you feel stupid for having questions and encourages opposing viewpoints. Interactive lectures and you get a lot out of them if you participate. Read the texts to do well on essays.
Professor Bonevac is an extremely talented lecturer. You don't have to work super hard to get a good grade in his class, but he's a smart guy. He doesn't require attendance, but every class is fascinating. Highly, highly recommend if you like philosophy. Do the quizzes - you'll need them on the final exam.
Professor Bonevac is an excellent lecturer. His way of breaking down theories allows you to grasp the more difficult components and is very engaging. This course is graded through essays, which he allows plenty of time and freedom to complete, as well as feedback on rough drafts. He is very high spirited, good humored, and values participation.
As a person and lecturer Professor Bonevac is phenomenal. However the amount of work expected from this UGS class is ridiculous you are expected to memorize about a thousand quotes from multiple different authors as well as writing an entire essay for both exams in the class. Sad my GPA took a hit because of his high expectations.
Professor Bonevac's class is interesting, but the grading can be harsh. Attend lectures and use Unstuck study for quiz prep - it really helped me get an A despite the tough final.
Even though I ended with an A the exams were pretty hard. It varies per semester but the midterm was just quotes and a short essay and the final was 110 mcq in 50 mts. he gives practice exams but be aware that there def going to be questions on the exam you didn't see on your 12+ attempts so be ready to read. Go to the lectures, I wish I did!
Its a tough class for a UGS, lot's of reading.
This is such a hard UGS, please don't take it. Professor was nice but not worth it all. Though I got an A, I was struggling to pull through the semester. There were weekly quizzes which were 20 questions IN 5 MINUTES & daily readings. It's ridiculous. Tests were hard to prepare for & difficult. I went to every lecture & it didn't help at all.
Grading methods are absurd. 5 papers about books are graded by TAs (50% final grade). Weekly quizzes based on participation(10%). The exams are terrible, midterm is memorizing quotes from philosophers and essay which seems to be graded extremely bad or good. Final is memorizing 150 quotes, 150 concept questions, asked 55 of each. Lectures are ok.
Grading methods are ridiculous. 5 papers about books are graded by the TAs and are 50% final grade. The exams are awful, midterm is memorizing quotes from philosophers and essay which seems to be graded poorly. Does not respect your time or autonomy.
Lectures are fun and engaging. But. Essays are very TA dependent, and midterm and final are heavily weighted, with a lot of quotes needed to be memorized. He said there would be a curve at the end but there was not any too.
He is a very engaging lecturer, cares about his students and is funny. If you pay attention and do your work you will be fine. The only thing is the 10 question pop quizzes in class that you have 3 min for. Those are hard.
He is very lenient
