HOTTIE and a good professor. He doesn't explain too well, but the quizzes are in groups and he also give some extra credit.
Brayton's a good teacher, lectures are normally boring. dont need to go to class powerpoints are posted on laulima. He gives exam reviews before the midterms and final. Super helpful during office hours.
Prof. Brayton mumbles and purely reads off the slides. He assigns online homework that does not even help you prepare for the test, but you have to do for homework credit. I did the best by far on a test when I focused on book problems, but lost points because I didn't use the online homework. You just have to do it even though it is not helpful.
Awful professor. Purely reads off of ppt slides, never worked out a single problem on the chalkboard, and mumbled the entire class periods. Review sessions were useless. Practice exams were nothing like the actual exams. Online homework had nothing to do with lectures or exams. Avoid this prof!
Nice guy, good looking too. But class is mostly self taught unless you ask questions or see him during office hours. Homework is easy points, quizzes are done in group fashion, and exams are tough. He lets you know what problems will be on the exams if you attend class. Lectures are kinda boring though.
Dan was a really good professor. He was always very clear on what we did & didn't have to know for the tests. The subject matter isn't the most interesting, but he does his best to not make it any more boring than needs to be. He does talk kinda softly, so it helps to sit in the front. All in all though, he's a really cool guy and great teacher.
He seems so jaded. So bored with the material he leans against the wall and mumbles when talking. Lets class out early all the time. Barely works problems. Tough tests, but curves. Has really interesting anecdotes for applied chemistry, but mostly reads the slides. Concerned with being a cool teacher, like he wants to be your pal,not your prof.
You may know other Dan's that you call 'Dan the man' but Brayton really is the one true Dan the Man. Chemistry is just one of those classes you gotta read the book and do the homework, if you can't do that then don't expect a good grade. Dan was easy to approach for office hours and helpful for anything related to chemistry. Funny guy too. Go Dan!
Wow, Dan is hot.
Brayton is very good looking... Sometimes it is hard to believe that he has his doctorates. He conveys the material clearly, but he is very boring. Refer to the power points and books outside of class (if you want an A). Not very enthusiastic. If you are planning to take Chem131/151, take his class. If Chem161 - don't.
He is very chill. He cancels class every once in a while, which is AWESOME. gives group quizzes and then 2 midterms and a final. You have to study the online homeworks and the studyguides to get a good grade, because he doesn't really go in details when he's teaching it. He shaved his facial hair different and now he just looks funny and not hot.
His class was pretty chill. The lectures were ok and he just went through the powerpt, not really caring. He cancels class once in a while, which was great There are quizzes every once in a while that are done in groups. The tests, however, are kind of hard. He curves it though. Overall, he is an ok and chill teacher.
I would avoid this professor. He mostly just reads off his powerpoints which contain material exactly from the textbook, so did not feel like I learned much at all. Homework and review sessions were also not relevant to actual exams. And the final exam was very different and more difficult than previous exams.
Took his class in Spring 2014. I would definitely say that you need to put in some effort to receive a good grade, because....it's Chemistry! He's a very laidback guy, sometimes cancels class once in a while. It can definitely get boring because he reads off the ppts. Grades off exams and HW and he curves also. I would take his class again.
Very poor teacher. Seems lazy and bored. Doesn't really work through problems. I only went to class for the exams because the only thing I got from going to class was an occasional nap. Only plus side is that he doesn't make you do all of the Mastering Chemistry (online) homework. If you do most of the problems then he bumps your grade up a bit.
I thought both Chem 161 and 162 were easy. Well, 161 especially. 162 you could say is harder, or because I'm barely paying attention. Bu it's still an easy class to pass. You barely have to do any memorizing. The online homework is worth 10% of your grade. Pay attention when he goes over examples or when he says "this is on the exam."
If you do the HW and the practice problems, you'll be fine. Lectures are really boring, and often end early.
Dr. Brayton understands the students' perspective, especially since he doesn't seem that much older than us. He gets "tired" of lectures, typically making them concise (instead of long and boring). He makes easier tests, and I actually thought 162 was easier than 161. The class curve is HIGH though (from easiness), so it's much harder to get an A.
Professor Brayton usually goes off his Powerpoints and seems a bit lackadaisical about teaching. There were only two midterms and a final which means if you just so happened to mess up on one of them, it will affect your grade harshly.
I did pretty bad in his class. I really didn't take the class seriously. He teaches pretty much straight out of the book using a powerpoint that is online. In my opinion, he goes pretty fast through concepts for a new comer like me in chemistry. Exams are diffcult, hw is easy. I recommend it if you don't like other classes. This was a okay to me.
At first his class didn't seem so difficult, but it eventually became really hard. You have to teach yourself because he reads off from the ppt. He doesn't do very many mathematical questions, yet the mid-terms and finals are mostly those ones :( I recommend you finish all of the Mastering Chemistry on time, so you know what is going on!
It's frustrating to be trying but struggling with a hard course and then have the professor end the lecture early because he says he's tired or bored.
His lectures may seem long, but that's only bc he sorta has a monotone voice. His class is an easy pass of you have taken chem before. If you want to learn about chem you have to really listen if not just write down the stuff he writes on the board. Book not needed just mastering chem code. Quizzes are in groups & he helps out when needed.
Honestly, he just seems disinterested in teaching. Possibly he might be better if he was teaching higher levels but down here at Chem 162, his classes are based upon cookie cutter powerpoints. You don't truly have to go to class and still do fine, though be careful for his midterms since messing up one will take quite a big chunk out of your grade.
Doesn't seem to care about teaching. Takes powerpoint provided by reading material and covers what he feels like, frequently skipping several slides at a time. Doesn't seem very prepared . A bit frustrating to listen to, especially as going to class is virtually a waste of time. Better off utilizing that hour reading the textbook.
He's helpful and tells you what you need to know for the exam or OCHEM. He's pretty chill and he showed us a slideshow of his dog once. I would recommend his class.
Although he is a good guy, teaching is not his strongsuit. He really doesn't care about teaching or helping his students pass. He even was so negligent that he forgot to give us our third midterm, and it was cancelled.
Homework is for 10% of your grade, and if you're not into hardcore self study, it'll probably be the only thing that keeps you from getting a complete 0%. Lectures are boring and directly read from PowerPoint (which are online), I did better on the tests when I read the textbook instead of going to lecture.
Easygoing professor, hard to learn from if you don't do self study. Skips things that you dont really need to know, and tells you whats on test and whats not so you dont need to waste time studying the wrong things
Not a bad guy, but not a good instructor.
Brayton is a decent professor, but his lectures were pretty boring. The joke was that students learned what they DIDN'T need to know. Mandatory online homework is 10% of your grade. Skipped class more than half the time, scored solid C's on the two midterms we had. There was such a huge curve at the end that I ended up with an A- after the final.
Lectures are boring. Homework is due on the day of mid-term. You only need 10 points from each chapter assigned(masteringchem). He is super chill and his fav sentence is "you don't need to know this". Mid-terms are 25 mc questions and pretty straightforward. If you copy the key points he wrote on board and study, then you could get an A.
The easiest professor ever. Just read the slides, you get good grades. His practice exams are soooo helpful. RECOMMEND!
Lectures are really boring, hard to stay engaged and focused while he's lecturing. He does give all the information you need on his slide presentations, and the class is easy IF you self study. Gives study guides before the exams, so really study those and the textbook if you have one. Favorite phrase is "you don't need to know this."
This is a self taught class. But Dr. Brayton (Dan) does a great job of helping his students and cares about their success.
There are 3 midterms and 1 final for his class. Don't bother going to his lectures because he just reads off from the powerpoint. It's better to read the chapter on your own. Homework is a part of your grade, but all you need is 10 pts for each HW chapter and you're done. His practice exams are helpful so make sure to study them.
You can learn more from doing mastering chemistry than going to the lectures.
Not a bad professor, but not great either. Tests are easy only if you self study. But do go to lecture because he tells you what you need to know and what you don't need to know for the exams. Review the ppt slides and read the book to reinforce the concepts. He gives extra credit for HW so take advantage of that.
Lectures are long and boring, don't bother going. About half of the time his "practice tests" are entirely different from the actual exam; they're never easier. You have to teach yourself the material if you want to do well. Final was hard, but the curve was generous (average was a 34/60).
Lectures are from the power points made by the textbook company. He just picks out the parts he thinks is important and skips over the rest. He can be funny sometimes but lectures can get a little boring. Tests are really not that bad and there's a curve. He makes practice tests which is great!
Dan reads off the powerpoint slides and has a monotone voice. The mic wasn't working so it made lectures even more boring. Expects Mastering Chem, but only ten points from it. There were three exams and were out of 25 points each, so if you got a question wrong, it brings down your grade by 4% per question. Final was out of 60. Curves grades
The lectures are long and boring, but he tells you what's going to be on the test. Other than that, he just reads straight from powerpoint and the laziness shows. He doesn't seem like he enjoys teaching. Tests are completely different than his practice exams, so prepare to self study. Huge curve in the end though!
How to get an A: read the textbook (before or after class), because he covers so much material in one class that it's impossible for you to keep up with him by the end of the class. If you've taken AP Chem in high school, it's an easy A. Since he covers content so fast, you're often left with a week of review before exams. Don't slack off!
The grade is based off of 3 midterms and a final, along with some homework and occasional extra credit. One bad midterm grade can drop your entire grade by a lot so I wish there would've been more variation in assignments given. Reads off of the lectures posted on Laulima.
He does very little to teach the class. He doesn't care for his students and if you choose to take his class be prepared to learn majority of your information from your book.
Rarely class and still getting an A. Just read the textbook. Pretty bad at giving lectures as he glosses over a lot of stuff. However, Brayton is clear on what would be on his exams. Just study his practice exam and make sure to study the questions. The bad reviews posted are idiots who probably only did lecture and no textbook. Easier than Kaiser.
The practice tests were ok, but mastering was a lot more helpful. He didn't teach at all just brushes over verbal concepts too quickly w/out taking time to show how to solve equations. Cares more bout tailgating. Gives attitude when people ask qs in class . Tests were tough as expected so READ YOUR TEXT. huge curve tho. (I got Ds on all exams)
If chemistry is not your thing, then good luck. I had to take it as a prerequisite course for grad school and had a very hard time. It could be that I am not fond of chemistry and did not put enough effort in, but it is tough. It may help to take this at a community college where you get more 1 on 1 from the teacher. My class had close to 300.
AVOID if you don't like/hate chem.. Dan's lectures were not helpful at all 9/10 times, so skipped lecture 3/4 of the semester and just self-studied. I've never liked/been good at chemistry, but even with extra studying put in this class was hard. The curve is a lifesaver though, I got pretty much D's on all the exams and did extra credit sometimes.
For the money I pay to attend UH I would appreciate a professor who more passionate about teaching a subject that not everyone has a strong grasp of. Otherwise, He does seem approachable.
He is a chemistry professor who doesn't know how to say the word nuclear (once said "nucular" six times in one class). His explanations are vague and unhelpful; bring your laptop so you can google things as he talks, or don't go and just read the textbook the weekend before the test.
Had him for summer chem161 and he sucks. I only attended class because his fav line is "u dont need to know this." tests are difficult & u have to teach yourself everything. only reason I'd take him again is cause his curve is AMAZING. Got an A, F, and a D on the 3 midterms and failed the final but still passed with a C+. With XC i got a B-.
Not recommended.
Professor Brayton is very laid back, but not a professor you would get a lot of info from. You will have to self-study in order to understand what he's talking about. He reads off PPT slides and he doesn't even explain that very well. He just tells you what's likely going to be on the exam. Curves. MasteringChem, only need 20 points. 1 Extra Cred.
Speaks in a monotonous tone throughout the entire lecture. Reads off PowerPoint slides but writes down things on board that you should know for the exam. Doesn't offer study reviews for midterms beside the final exam. Offers extra credit and curves the class (thank goodness). If you want an A, you will have to study on your own time.
Funny teacher, but you have to do a lot of self study to pass this class. Do not recommend if you're not willing to put in a lot of extra study hours.
My favorite professor. He tells you exactly what you need to know, and explains things well in lecture. Also pretty funny and interesting during lecture. He will meet with you anytime for help. Any one who has trouble in this class is honestly just lazy. You either don't do the work outside of class, or refuse to go to any office hours.
Brayton was not the best teacher. He was always there if you needed help though which is a plus. Lectures were "stock" power points , from the company that wrote the textbook so it's 85% words which makes it very hard to absorb. He tells you exactly what's going to be on the midterms too.
Brayton lectures pretty fast & can be hard to follow along at times. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give tips on taking the exams and what will appear on the midterms/final. The homework is pretty easy and online. The only extra credit offered is bumping your grade a little if you do extra problems. Recitation was really helpful!
His lectures did little to nothing to help me understand the material. He offers practice tests but it did not reflect the questions on the test. I feel like I knew more about chemistry before I had his class. A waste of a semester.
Went to every lecture just in case he mentioned any hints about the exams but learned nothing from lecture. It was hard to focus since his tone is laid back. The only reason I got an A was because I did all of the mastering problems (including the optional ones) the day before each exam to teach myself the material.
Favorite terms: "you don't need to know this," "I don't feel like reading this so I'm going to skip it," "you really only need to know this for bio/ochem." Overall laid-back, but a little too laid back. I found myself struggling to stay awake through the lectures as they were slides straight from the book. Better off reading at home.
Prof. Brayton tells you what you do not need to know for the class. He does give hints as to what kind of problems will be on the exams and his study guides (practice problems) give you an idea of what types of questions will be on the exam..
Brayton reads off his powerpoint for every class, each powerpoint being 70+ slides. There are three midterms and one final, homework is only worth 10% or so and attendance is not mandatory. Just follow all of his examples on the slides and you should be okay. Basically need to teach yourself the class.
Dan's ratings aren't as high but I think he's good. As someone who retook chem 161 this semester from Brayton, I can say that he's good at emphasizing what is important and what's not. He can be a little too laid back at sometimes. If you approach him, he will care. He wants people to pass, he just expects you to do your part. He's not bad.
Class is not mandatory , hardly any of the class showed up every week. Even if you go, you will have to work hard to teach yourself material because he is not super great at explaining concepts. He doesn't use a microphone so it's hard to hear him from the back of the lecture hall. If chem is not a strong suit for you, I would not recommend him.
He's a decent professor but sometime's you can tell he doesn't want to be teaching the class. During the first few weeks he would spend half of the class going over things "You won't need unless you're going to o-chem". Also I feel like exams are too much of the grade at like 85% of the final grade. Class is probably good for chem/bio majors.
Dr Brayton is a very good teacher. He cares about his students progress. You really need to learn the concepts in Chemistry for real life application, and to pass this class, and his class is very informative for All majors. Go to class. If you can. The homework concepts are relevant to the exams!
This instructor is very smart teacher who does not let students stop using their brains. He is an easy A for those who do their homework and are serious about their intent to go to medical school. His exams are easy if you follow his instructions from the beginning of the class.
I took the lab, Chemistry lab is part of the lecture, and the professional related portion of the course. This course is relatively understandable as it has the activity correlation to the homework. Do not drop your glassware!
Chemistry Lab is a required course for science majors. This class is an easy A. Just do the work! And dont fall behind in lecture.
I took this class for the credit. This class requires a pay attention mindset, careful hands, and an attention to general and minute details.
This teacher was very hard. He needs to speak louder. But I definitely took advantage of the extra credit opportunities, office hours, learning emporium hours, did all my homework, and scored an easy C. Hes also very, very funny!!!
Chemistry 162 is a much better course because of this instructor. Because I took 161, I am much relieved to have taken a course from someone who has very good communication skills and excellent attention to detail! He has a steady sense of caring for his students! Grades are a mandatory part of the education system, so follow the instructions!!!
This teacher is very smart, very kind, and very understanding. I will not regret this elective course!
This professor is very difficult and I needed to study hard in this class.
This professor helped his students learn by using a easy communication during class and was easy to understand. He has a very organized teaching strategy and helps students to clearly grasp the concepts mentally.
This is a good class and the teacher meets the standards for a science professor. I didnt have the chance to study more during this semester.
I am officially graduated. I am going to finish as a teacher. This professor is good for teaching a requirement within the natural sciences major for Education. He fair, concise, though young, and sometimes wanders off tangent. He does tell good stories though. Stories during class make class time more enjoyable.
terrible teacher. smart tho.
American teachers are the best, and he is really, really nice to look at, but Please do your homework, because he does want all his students to pass, regardless, and also He also teaches most of the labs, so do not get mixed up between the classes like I did! Life can be hard, and he does his best.
This was his first semester co-teaching 171 with Tom Apple and the curriculum will probably be different in the following semesters since he'll be instructing it on his own. Probably will instruct 171 similar to his 161 classes but with a faster pace. Test/quizzes were open internet, notes and book but I doubt that will be the same next semester.
CHEM171 seemed to be a daunting class at first, but as long as you attend lectures or read the textbook you should pass easily. Quizzes were pretty straightforward, especially if you attend office hours, which I highly recommend. No midterm, only final, which was also open note/book/computer just like the weekly quizzes. Good professor.
Lectures are given with such a lowkey nature it feels like he doesn't care. Went to some office hours, review sessions, & studied 3-5 hrs a night but still couldn't get a handle on his exams. Also he's super problematic. Once made an analogy w/ what we were learning to slaves on a slave ship.. Lecture hall went silent, no one knew how to respond.
Worst teacher I've had. Just reads slides and lectures are boring. Most times i cant even hear this dude. Worst part is that he doesnt even share the slides so you cant review for the test. It is nearly impossible to take good notes in class as he skips slides and goes by really fast.
Very heavy on lectures. He's hard to hear so sit near the front. He also DOES NOT upload slides so be prepared to read the book. You would probably learn more chemistry on your own watching chem videos and reading the book.
He was pretty good in person, a little awkward but taught what he needed to and was straight to the point. But online/outside of the classroom he was kind of rude and very sassy. If you take his class make sure your interactions are in person only!
"Dan" does not upload lectures, so going to class is practically mandatory. If you complete 50% or more on each mastering chemistry homework, he will bump your grade one sign (B to B+). His exams are challenging, average is usually 50-60%. Sit in the front because you won't hear him if you are in the back. Recitations are part of your grade.
This professor is not a good professor if you are going to skip lectures. First off, he will not give you slides to look over if you ever do miss class. Also, he often goes off in a tangent about something and he teaches really fast. It is not a professor I would recommend you take.
Dan has a laid back personality but expects students to put in the effort to do well. He's not the best lecturer so substantive outside studying will be essential to do well on exams. He's good for supplemental learning if you have a decent study basis on your own, but don't expect to understand things solely from his lectures.
I took the Chem161 Lab during the pandemic, of Summer 2020. We had to do one or two labs every other day (MW or TR). After we do the lab, the report is due the next time we met (so you only have 1 full day to do it). I was lucky to have a chill TA that let us have more time to work on it. It was tedious but manageable.
very long, boring and unclear lectures. He cannot teach and is not approachable.
Professor Brayton is such a Chad. He's a really nice guy, and is one of the good chemistry professors at UHM, which is rare. He tells you exactly what you need to know, curves, and gives huge amounts of extra credit.
If you can avoid Brayton I would. Super lecture heavy and very monotonous. Homework doesn't account for problems we skip in lecture. The lecture contains a million typos that he never fixes so your sit there for an hour trying to figure out where you went wrong because he lectures through it like its correct. Curve is basically your only hope.
He seems very personable and nice as a person, however, I would not recommend taking his class at all. His lectures are full of typos and incorrect example problems as well as not being very reflective of material for exams. Additionally, your entire grade is pretty much based on the exam scores and his study guides are not helpful at all.
Prof Brayton is pretty good at explaining and teaching chem, but it's still a challenging class. Just make sure to stay on top of the homework assignments and study hard for the exams. Due to COVID, exams were online - they were still somewhat challenging though. Grade is curved usually and Brayton seems to genuinely care about helping you pass.
Spring 21. Does last minute decisions like take away notes the day before exam. Worksheets have formula but format looks like a mess, didnt use it. Recitation teaches u more than he does. Read the book, do practices bc he only goes over easy problems. Have a study buddy. He curves okay. Typos on examples. Study guide has lots of irrelevant topics.
He can't teach well and CHEM 162 is more math-heavy and conceptually difficult compared to CHEM 161. Exams are difficult to pass because "Dan" wants to make his questions "ungoogleable"(he also likes to use "none of the above") If you wanna pass his class, you should do khan academy AP chem, watch orgo chem tutor, and attend recitations every week.
During lectures, videos of his past lecture recordings are played. Students can watch the videos on their own time. I honestly taught myself in this course because the videos were not helpful for my learning style. 162 follows a more quantitative, problem-solving approach over memorizing concepts like in 161. Nice guy and promptly answers emails!
Dan is one of the worst professors out there. Lazy, rude, uncaring, and inappropriate. If you can avoid him, I would highly recommend taking a class with someone else. You will hardly learn anything and will feel frustrated in the end, despite working hard or getting a good grade.
He played videos of himself reading off of the slides during 'live' lecture. He doesn't really know what he's doing lots of last min stuff. The only good thing about this class was the curve and the extra credit that he gave if you did 10 points of the homework per chapter. I would try to avoid him if you can and actually want to learn chemistry.
He is one of the single-handedly worst teachers I've ever had. You leave every class feeling confused, frustrated & need to watch the lecture on your own time. He's a VERY visual learner & skips over alot of text information. The slides aren't even his own & it shows.
I took this class over zoom and I could not pass this class after taking it twice under his teaching. All of the homework, quizzes, and tests become their own single grades. You have to teach yourself everything. I sent an email for help and he said it could be "off the books," which scared me.
He like actually sucks and talks like he's high. Maybe he is. That would explain why he doesn't teach ANYTHING.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE CLASS. He only uses prerecorded lectures for live lectures online. He skips through the notes in the rcorded lectures and barely makes time to answer questions. The exams are not the easiest as he takes pride in making them "ungoogleable". Doesnt teach the class and makes us understand ourselves
Dan gets a bad rap. He treats his class like a college level class and many people want him to baby them and treat them like highschool students. He grades on a very generous curve, and host review sessions before the exams after hours. If a student cares to learn he will help them. This, however, was a very challenging class for a gen chem.
His lectures basically consist of him mumbling so only the first row can hear him and he's overall pretty lazy when it comes to teaching. For the final, he had to take out multiple questions because he was "too lazy" to look over it before we took it.
Dr. Brayton is a nice guy but not the most amazing lecturer. Pros: he uploads literally all of his slides and even recordings and all exams are curved so that no one gets an F. He also bought us pizza for his last review session. Cons: His lectures are not very engaging. To succeed in his class, you just have to do the Macmillan homework honestly.
He uses power points slides and gives lectures. There are online versions of tests and every material he produces. The learning, however, will happen on your own time. The best way to learn this class would be to learn the material on your own time, practice with homework and example tests, and then show up at the end of lectures to ask questions.
The grading system for this online class is easy to understand and straightforward. While it's an online class, it is also advisable to supplement your learning with additional resources such as videos on YouTube. The online session was relaxed.
Dr. Brayton is not a good teacher. To be sucessful you should read the book and supplement with videos. The material isnt really too difficult but it requires full immersion which can be a challenge if you are full-time. He doesnt care about your critical thinking; he makes it difficult on purpose to titilate himself as if its a game.
The class requires self-discipline, but using resources like unstuck ai alongside the textbook can help you succeed. Lectures are hit-or-miss, so focus on understanding the material.
I had Dan for my chemistry lab. He is a really fun guy on the outside, but I don't think I would survive if I had him for lecture. He doesn't really explain all that well, but he will take the time to help you if you ask. I also think I had some fun in his class because of the labs more than him talking.
Rude and does not care about teaching.
