bad temper, looks like he's on the verge of having a psycotic episode, constant mistakes on his own arithmetic.
worst math teacher i know. he's a waste of students' time. i suspect he's a little autistic. ADVICE: DO NOT TAKE HIM AS YOUR TEACHER!!
This guy is smart, but doesn't know how to teach such a low level class. I took calculus in high school and got 90's and yet i fail this guy. Now I have to pay ANOTHER $500 because Hunter wont get rid of him. I want my money back!
Apparently, I took this course with the wrong professor! I spent 90% of the semester in the math lab. My highest test grade was 11%, which, when curved, was an A. I never even knew his name 'til I ratted him out to the math dept!
he is the worst teacher at hunter, but he give open book tests, and take home final, so.. its not that bad.
this is the worst professor i have ever had. i never even go to class anymore because it's such a waste of time...if u listen to him, you will be even more confused! and his final is not take home, but the tests are open book
I have been at Hunter for 3 years and this guy is one of a kind. I have NEVER seen a worse proffesor then him. He hates people and has no clue how to teach. The highest grade on his exams is usually a 50% and that't an A+. That tells you something.
he is terrible!! worst professor ever... i dont learn anything from him at all, i had to study everything from the book by my own. he would never help students. gets mad easily when students ask him questions.
I have no doubt that he is without a doubt the worst professor to ever walk the face of the earth. Constant mistakes, does not care one bit about what he does.

Ok...While Dr. Chess is a touch professor, he is extremely thourough with his lectures. He proves every point he tries to make, which I think isn't really done in classes before this. In this class, everything needs to be proved, so he's not that bad!
Spaced out. Endless conversations with the board. Gave take home tests which were easy to ace. Don't count on learning anything in class. If u are the kind of person that is good in math and can learn on u'r own good- then take this guy. If not avoid.
He's a nice guy, but he is a horrible professor. Plus his tests are unclear.
His handwriting is worse then if I wrote with my left foot.
well its calc so obviously its going to be hard you really need to study off by yourself for this one or at least have prior knowledge dont be discouraged if u have a low grade most likely everyone else does also soo he does an ok curve hes fair but really confusing if hes a last resort take
Terrible professor, chicken scratch handwriting which he can't even read himself, unclear lectures(waste of time), unclear explanations. Exams are awfully hard. Snaps at students when asked about questions. He does not help, depend more on recitation instructors if u have questions. WOrsT Professor
hes an o.k. guy but he cannot teach. His tests are ridiculous, even if you study for them. and he can be very arrogant about the way he goes about his lessons, even if the class is not learning. The class average on the second exam was 16! Avoid him at all costs!!
The worst professor ever! Makes obscene references that do not pertain to the subject matter, ie, a lecture on the Roman empire! My class average on the second exam of the semester was a 12! This class will make any student lose interest in the subject at hand! Only listen to the T.A's for advice!

He was the worst math teacher i have ever met. Never provided clear answers to anything. I couldn't see his hand writing at all. He got mad easily and ended up yelling at students. Just avoid him totally. He just cannot teach.
our class met at 1 pm and he would always run at least half an hour late saying that he's not a morning person. He seems to have some sort of real mental problem, the type that he's a genius but has no ability to interact/communicate with humans. VERY short tempered and careless.
I am a straight A math sudent but he made me feel like I was just stupid. Not because I didn't understand but because of his attitude. I feel like I was cheated out of my time and money, and have less faith in the quality of Hunter's Math department as a result of having had him as a teacher.
he is superb. A lot of ppl complain that his method of teaching is ambiguous and test is rather unclear. But the truth is he truly knows the concepts of math and wants to explain to students. And ppl think it is rather stupid and time consuming because all they want is how to solve and get easy A.
people wants to know why he's still teaching. He does demand an answer himself 2.He is a genius but he never satisfied any solution he had.He goes deep inside a proof. All in a sudden he realizes wasn't what he wanted.he ereases it and gives another deeper proof.he then realize no one in class follows
The single worst experience I had as a student at Hunter College was being enrolled in this man's course. Always late to class, even on test days, and he showed up looking like had just rolled out of bed. Never explained anything, and randomly assigned grades. Probability of learning anything: 0.
The class would be better off with no professor and sticking straight to the books. Absolute lack of communication skills, horrible explanations, often wonders off on tangents and realizes he is solving the wrong problems. Tests are light years ahead of the lectures, often late and disgruntled, BAD!
Did you see "A Beautiful Mind"? He's just like that, except without any of the good stuff. He should not be teaching. He literally came to class one day and said "Oh, sorry I'm so spacey today. My psychiatrist put me on a new medication."
the 1st horrible professor i met in hunter. don't know how to teach at all. rather not come to class but read book at home. i got B+ and A on two midterms, but my final grade is just a B-. I don't no y n not even bother to figure it out.
absolutely the worst professor i have ever had...BUT, if you're really not interested in learning math and only taking this class because u have to, u may want to take him. a 20 in his class is a B-. his tests are open book but that doesnt help because u can't understand what the quest. is asking
Hes not easy, if you do work you will do well. Hes SUPER smart. He was a math butt kicker in some ivy leauge school. Hes also very funny.
If you're in just to pass to class take him and you will get a C. However, if you want to learn something stay away. Some of the things i already knew but he knew how to complicate it in a way that i didnt even realize i know it. Stay away if you want to learn something!
He looks like a bum on the streets, and he is very funny (his jokes are so naughty.) But very unclear language and proofs! However, sometimes he is flexible and understanding. He is not good at teaching, but he is still not the worst professor at Hunter.
one of the smartest profs ive encountered in college. ppl complain about him cuz most of them dont study. hes very hard to follow, agree, but if you follow his logic, you're on the right track. you dont learn from profs, its you and the books, but he will be there when you get stuck. hes the true mathematical professor!
Confusing lectures are his specialty. Very irritable, he often gets lost in the middle of a proof, but everybody passes the class. The lowest grade being a C.

Where to start? Horrible handwriting, completely disorganized, comes to lectures unprepared to teach, befuddled, makes tons of errors, late more often than not...All the qualities that make a bad math professor. If you want to learn the math, be prepared to do all the learning on your own. Easily the worst professor I've come across.
Prof. Chess gets a bad rap. He is unorganized, uncooth, makes arithmetic errors constantly, inpatient, and often unclear in his lectures. However, the man knows his stuff. If you're a serious math student and want to learn something, take him and you will. If you're just looking to pass and don't intend to study hard, you'll fail. That simple.
This man is living proof that genius alone does not make a good (or even acceptable) professor. The ABSOULTE WORST instructor you'll ever come across. What good is his intellect when he's incapable of completing ONE problem without errors? He's been getting by on the weight of that Princeton PhD for way too long now, and should be fired ASAP.
He's totally unorganized. I dont understand his lecture at all. He could complex the easy math by working on the MathMatica. One thing that's good is he SAID he will gives out B to majority of the students.
Everyone else said all the bad things about him which I completely agree with. Mathimatica and Calc 2 should NOT be put together. However, his exams are open book, and 6 out of the 8 questions were hw questions and 1 of the remaining 2 was an example from a chapter in the book. So that was good
he talks to the board and you only see his butt half the time, very boring lecture and make material uninteresting.
oh wow. there's a lot to be said about this one. This guy is a math genious, but he is kinda weird. I had him for math lab and he was very lenient with grading because he hated the commands in the program. he looks like a hippie, and stinks badly. you can see his nipples sticking out of holes in his shirts, and that is very distracting. so u decide
Please be advised, unless you want to study on your own, I recommend taking this course with another prof. Very frustrating, simple mathmatical errors by him lost the confidence of the class. Does not want to answer homework questions, let alone want to "be there", yet evening students tired after a day of work make the effort to TRY.
A horrible professor. You can tell he is brilliant but it doesn't mean he can teach. Coming into class at 7:30 in the evening to listen to him blab about the subject and not even make sense is not where you want to spend your money. Piece of advise, take this class with another prof. I pretty much paid $750 to teach myself out of the book.

simply.......don't take his course!! You just waste your time! learn nothing! The only I have to admit is that he fails nobody.
He very often will make arithmetic errors which will leave you easily lost.
Prof. Chess really did not seem to be making an effort with this class. He missed lots of classes, made lots of mistakes with the lectures, and generally seemed too sleepy and unfocused to really engage with us. If I had skipped the classes and spent my time studying the textbook, I would have been a lot better off.
I walked out an hour n a half early on the first day of class. One student got fed up and grabbed the chalk from him to correct a mistake he made and didn't understand. I think I'd rather have a student teach.
You decide - if u gotta take other math classes after - don't take him. Math155 was the last math class I had to take, so I was happy to be in this class - he doesn't fail anyone, I skipped most classes, showed up on exams only and got a good grade.
His class is a misfortune. He is rude, nasty, petulant, unhealthy and completely incapable of performing even at a rudimentary level. He tends to grade high (probably to keep his job.) It's not worth it, however. He quoted Brecht once; that was cool.
He was relieved of teaching halfway through the semester... what does that tell you?
In my opinion, if you don't listen to Prof. Chess but pay too much attention to his attire or his hand writing, you'll never get the subject. People tend to waste time on trivial things in his class. His explanations were very insightful and I learnt a lot about calculus from this guy. He can be a duck but I can still learn great deal from his mind
Extremely weird guy. He has health problems that have impacted his ability to speak clearly, and he's also a grump. I wouldn't recommend him. He misses class a lot without warning.
I had Chess back in 2002 and 2003. I felt he was wonderful. I took cal with bendersky and that was horrible...i then took it with Chess and got a B+. so i got an A+in lab, A- in precal and B+ in cal all with chess..i dont care about his attire, bottom line is he is arguably the most brilliant person I have ever met..go to office hours yo
Unclear lectures. Poor hygiene. Answers with an attitude. The only thing I respected about this professor is if you complete and understand the online homework, you will pass his exams. I said pass not ACE!
This is an online course and He just sent homeworks and wanted to solve questions which you haven't any idea how to solve them. I went to the teacher 2 times but not helpful. He is very clever but I think haven't teaching skills. AVOID him better for you don't take MAT126
Many people wrote horrible things but he's a good professor, pay attention in class. Practice makes perfect, the more you practice problems from homework the better you will do on the exams. 3 exams and 1 final (counts as two grades). Lowest exam is dropped. He is very very fair with the exams, I highly suggest this class.
The class is really difficult, but if you show him that you care he'll give you a good grade.
I love math and he made me HATE calculus. His exams are so tough that we had to redo every single one as a take home exam to boost our grade. I went to the math center to see if they could help me and they had a hard time understanding his problems. He yells and shouts at students. I read the comments thinking everyone was just lazy...I was wrong
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE A CLASS WITH D CHESS. It's online so he just sends you the lessons, which often have errors on them, and the accompanying problem set are either ridiculously nonsensical or he tells you the answers in the question - regardless you dont really learn anything. Overall, the workload was intense and unnecessary :(
He's okay. However, he does frequently make mistakes and gets lost in his own work. Extremely confusing if you go to his lectures, as he is unorganized. His office hours will somewhat help, but you will have to teach yourself the majority of the material from the class. And just as a heads up, bring water bottles to class.
You will do a lot of work , if you don't have the stomach for it, DON'T REGISTER. Expect to work in groups and be prepared, his p-sets are pretty tough and more in-line with other math departments in more "prestigious schools". I used a different textbook, Claudia Menini Freddy Van Oystaeyen Abstract Algebra A Comprehensive Treatment. Good luck!
The professor is very knowledgeable about the subject but very difficult to follow. He jumps around between proofs and content that are not aligned with the textbook. He makes tons of mistakes and his handwriting makes notation very confusing. I did well but with a lot of unnecessary pain, and using 2 other txtbooks. His course is poorly structured
THIS IS THE WORSE PROFESSOR YOU WILL ENCOUNTER AT HUNTER COLLEGE. This person is very disorganized, he does so many typos and mistakes on his instruction, and he is extremely rude. Please do not take him EVER!!!!
This was such a hard class to get through. The professor is very unorganized and moves too quickly without explaining things. Also, although it's not his fault, his handwriting is illegible. You cannot follow along.
I really enjoyed this class and Professor Chess. It was challenging, but I feel extremely accomplished after completion. He's always available to answer questions about the problem sets. Also, he is the most intelligent Professor at Hunter. Amazing person to talk to.
Daniel Chess is a terrible professor. His lectures are terrible. He uses an app that allows him to write things on his screen, but his handwriting is disgustingly awful. You'll won't be able to read his handwriting. He is rude, unorganized and forgetful. Does not upload his notes or his lectures on time. Do yourself a favor and never take his class
As a scholar and a mathematician, I respect Dr. Chess immensely. However, his class was graded based on only four homework assignments and two exams. His feedback was either nonexistent or completely illegible, and his lectures would have been hard to follow even his handwriting wasn't as bad as it is.
Rigorous course. The homework and exams were very interesting and quite difficult. He was extremely helpful with the homework and the exams, he told us EXACTLY how to solve the problems. He even looked at my final and pointed out mistakes. But his handwriting looks like that of a drunk doctor who has arthritis. Overall interesting course.
class has not even started yet and he sent us the first lesson. The syllabus and class were very rude and he seems to be very particular. Class is online async and seems to think that means he doesn't teach and he doesnt seem to care either. not looking forward to this semester
The work is extremely tedious. Best to work in groups, so that you dont suffer alone. If you cant code then this is not the class for you. The software is confusing and theres no help for beginners.
Most of the class is finding the correct mathematica functions on google or the textbooks. The entire grade was just 5 homework assignments and you're allowed to work in groups of 4. He also curves at the end, which is nice, though some of the problems were a little confusing and he can be a bit rude at times. Fine choice for cs majors/math minors.
If you enjoy watching paint dry, this is the perfect class for you.
Honestly I didn't do bad on the exams around like 80s and I even did ALL the extra credits and all the homeworks on time and I STILL GOT A B. His lectures are so boring, I don't even understand what's going on in class. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
He looks nice, but he is very boring. He talks very slow. Don't take him if you don't understand math easily. At least he puts effort in teaching.
Very difficult professor. His handwriting and feedback is illegible. No idea how I was graded despite turning in all homeworks and projects early. His timing and pace was also very flawed.
Please save your self and DO NOT take this class. His lectures are really not understandable and has terrible handwriting. He is very, but very disorganized and slow at teaching. The class is constantly falling behind in terms of lectures and he would put stuff that we didn't get to learn on the exam. I actually cried many times out of frustration.
If you can follow instructions to the last letter and not get fed up with how tedious the assignments are, then you can get by in this class. There's no lecture, your whole grade is 7 homeworks that he says will be due every 2 weeks but it's really when he wants. Your best bet is to read the instructions in the hw, they sometimes give the answer.
He is definitely eccentric but the poor rating is not justified. Handwriting is poor, but lectures are clear. He gives clear reviews for exam & will go over your exam question by question if you ask. He answers students' questions in detail & encourages students to asking questions. He shows up to class despite clearly being in poor health.
This is the kindest math professor I have ever meet so far. He lectures without stop, but he is always willing to reexplain the material if needed. His homework is a reasonable amount and he is very considerate on extensions.
This is the kindest math professor I have ever meet so far. He lectures without stop, but he is always willing to reexplain the material if needed. His homework is a reasonable amount and he is very considerate on extensions. Exam reviews are very similar to the exams itself. He is wonderful.
