Great teacher. All quizes & test r from his lecture so u must come to class. He reviews what u need to know before the tests & will go out of his way to make sure u understand it.He likes the class to participate so speak up...its from the notes & it helps u review anyway.take good notes & make sure u know the material.Highly recommend taking him.
HIST MO1A..Very good teacher. His class is all lectures and taking notes. Just take notes and you will do fine on the tests. He will help you and go over material if its not clear to you. Way better teacher then Brown.
he's a decent guy and a good teacher...his class is ALL LECTURE, so if you feel like ditching alot i wouldn't really recommend him unless you have a friend you can get the notes from...otherwise, he's very clear, and wants to make sure everyone understands the material...good teacher
This guy is very intelligent. his classes are all lecture but he tries to make his lectures interesting. his quizzes and tests and straight from your notes so just study your notes. i recommend this teacher!
As has been said by others, his classes are all lecture. I hate to sound rude, but his classes were extremely boring. There were only the four people who ever spoke up who he liked. His tests are all fill in and essay which I liked because it was easier for partial credit. If you like lecture classes go for it, otherwise, I don't recommend.
SO BASIACLLY...HE LOOKS JUST LIKE KIP FROM NAPOLEON DYNAMITE. HES A GOOD TEACHER. GO TO CLASS AND YOU'LL PASS.
Very Good Teacher although it's a pure lecture class. Nothing but lectures. He is extremely helpful, doesnt take attendence. Show up to class though anyways! If you don't get the notes your screwed for the tests because its usually a lot of broad and specific material. The tests are pretty hard and all short answer with an essay at the end.
provides good lectures
horrible teacher. boring. grades VERY hard. i'm pretty sure that no body liked him in my class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
VERY hard grader. specific. annoying voice. boring. You have to study your butt off to even think of getting a B or C. I doubt anyone got an A. Attendance isnt mandatory, but if you dont get the notes you might as well forget about it.
This guy is HARD! you must be in class. all of his tests and exams are based on his lectures only. he helps you by going over the exam a week before as well as the Essay in it. he talks LOUD. grades really hard. grades like a Engl teacher more than a histroy teacher.
He is very very boring! Tests were very hard. Quizes were very hard. I barely passed. He is a huge nerd! the least exciting class i have ever taken.
Good class. He knows his stuff and is very into history. He's very helpful. He does have a LOUD voice. If you miss class prepare to bomb the test. Tests are based primarily on notes. Nice guy, let me come to class 15 min late each day because of bus times. My grade did suffer though.I'm terrible at history, but if you are into it,this class is ideal
Very good teacher. Very clear and notes are easy but...he is extremely hard for a intro class. Wrote an A paper he gave me a C. 70% of the class dropped before the final
By far the worst teacher i have ever had. All tests and quizzes are short answer and essay questions. I am an A/B student and i put in that amount of effort and got a C. He is very specific and marks you off for the smallest things imaginable. He doesn't expect you to learn- he expects you to memorize. He is an insult to educators everywhere.
This guy is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is absolutely ridiculous. He grades an intro class like an honors class. He marks off for the smallest things possible, it is a joke! Have to take a ton of notes. History is one of my favorite subjects and he made me absolutely hate it. DON'T TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!!
This class was absolutely impossible. I studied forever and took a ridiculous amount of notes and got D's on everything. He grades so intensely, I don't think anyone has an A in his class as of now. So hard that the seats are emptying out on a weekly basis... Please, save yourselves the mistake that I made and keep your GPA up by not joining.
He does provide good notes and always offers help. He does have a loud voice though, but that helped keep me awake. I found this class extremely easy, but that may be because I'm a history fanatic.
Awful. Smartest person has an 80%. Almost everyone dropped, I regret not doing it. Take this class if you want to fail.
I failed this class. Tests are extremely hard, I got D's on them and I studied. Quizzes are hard too. He tears apart every word you write on every test and assignment. If you care about passing classes, do whatever you can to not take this professor!!! It is sad because he is great at lecturing but it is impossible to get a good grade.
he is very very hard! do not waste your $ on buying the textbook i never used it. he grades veyr hards. he talks extremely loud, i left many times w/ a headache. he talks to fast that he gets cotton mouth which leads to build up in the corner of his lips. it is so gross. i got a d on every quiz....DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Talks alot, but makes it interesting
Darby is cool... You have to read a book. Attendance isnt mandatory, but if you dont go, you miss out on a lot of useful info that is on tests. As long as you pay attn, you can easily get a good grade! DONT MISS A TEST!! He is serious about a dr's note! If you need help, just let him know and he usually emails/gets back to you.
Darby was a decent teacher but i really didnt like his teacher style. It was tough to understand him and his notes were sloppy and unorganized. He is a very tough grader and not an easy A by any means. He's very helpful aswell.
Hard! nice guy, but a very hard class. lots of notes and have to listen very clearly. very hard grader on test and quizzes.
Interesting class. Pretty cool teacher. Really nice, he meant well. Loved all the students and every once in a while popped a joke here or there. Tests are easy (he gives you the essay and answers to the questions before hand). The quizes are hard!! Study and you'll do fine.
Uses big words. Loud-maybe because he's nervous. Paces around a lot. Humble. Funny to watch. Likes to help. Interesting to listen to. Teaches like he's telling a story. Very competent. Grade was only based on 3 small quizzes, a worksheet and 2 exams. Grade is only based on lectures pretty much. Requires you to elaborate and explain yourself A LOT.
unorganized, supposed to have 2 exams and 1 final but instead 1 exam and 1 final. exam/final = easy b/c he gives u essay answer in class;email him about short answers, he gives u the answer back in email, tests=medium, quizzes=VERY hard; quizzes/tests based ONLY on lectures, so show up everyday;and watchout, he loves to drool while he talks
hard-working, awesome teacher. clear lectures, though hard grader at times. mainly based off 2-3 tests and quizzes and usually 1-2 worksheets. if you listen to his lectures and take good notes, you will most definitely pass his class with either an A or a B.
for the love of all that's holy, do not take his class. he's a good professor, and he knows his ish, but he grades ridiculously hard!! you have to go into an unbelievable amount of detail to get any points. he gives long winded explainations, and expects even longer answers on tests/quizes. only take this class if you are a history buff and love it
Worst teacher i have ever had in my entire life. His class is all notes..goes super slow and his quizzes and tests are all writing and if you dont put every single detail you get 0 points. He made me hate history.
Must attend class!!! Take good notes, and you'll do fine. Test/quizes 99.9% lecture notes.
I took this class during summer session and would have enjoyed it more during a semester (not at such an accelerated pace). Darby is a tough teacher but he is very organized, entertaining, and makes history more interesting. If you take good notes and STUDY, you will do well.
Grades very hard for the few quizzes and tests he gives out, making it quite hard to get a B or an A. You have to attend every class to have a chance at a B. For an A you have to be "specific" and "elaborate" on pretty much every written quiz/test he gives you.
He was a great teacher, he gives all the info you need to do well. His test are not easy, but he gives you a study guide and the essay up front. Got an A
Professor Darby is one of THE BEST teachers I have ever taken. If you don't enjoy history much take him. He is so enthusiastic and animated that it's hard not to enjoy the class. He is super clear about what he teaches and is always available for questions. For each quiz and test you get a study guide so it's hard not to do well. Just go to class.
Most boring teacher I have ever had. Hard grader. Grades down on every spelling/grammar mistake made. I love history, but this teacher isnt good at teaching it
Very hard grader but is available to help any time. If you are interested in History and go to class then I would take him. You can get a lot out of the class if you put in the time.
holy crap, his tests and quiz are incredibly difficult. he does give you a lot in terms of support and helpfulness, but its a history class. unless you are a major in history why would you want to commit time studying this, although he is a good teacher he is also a tough grader, do not take if you are not a history major, but if you are go for it
He was a bore to listen to. He is straightforward in what he expects and he helps you achieve what you need. He is animated and makes class interesting at least. You must read the book to supplement his lectures. I think he was kinda new at this class but he is a good teacher.
Took him during summer, the class moved very quickly but if you listen to lectures and read the book you should b able to pass class he is a hard grader but he just really wants students to understand subject i peronally liked him and enjoyed the class
Cumulative weekly quizzes might give you hypertension from the stress it gives. My section was at 8am, and he's quite loud. He's pretty in depth, but he really expects you to read the book and sometimes the info from the book conflicts with his lectures. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
He is very precise and enthusiastic with his lectures. His tests are quite difficult but if you go to class and pay CLOSE attention you are ok. tough grader but will answer any questions you have and makes himself available. I personally enjoyed this class and I would take another class with him again.
If you have no interest in history, do not tak this class. I never have and never will like history and taking this class at 8 am was a huge mistake.! I'm math/science oriented so this was definitly not for me. His classes don't fill up for a good reason!
Pretty awesome teacher. He was very excited and energetic about the subject! The work wasn't so bad, mostly just lecture. He makes sure you are super prepared for tests, which is nice. I never really needed it, but I know he is often available if you had questions or needed help. I enjoyed his class immensely!
Grades pretty hard, make sure you are specific with your answers. No homework, only 8 quizzes and 2 tests. Make sure you show up to the lectures because most of the info on the tests has to do with the lectures. I didn't read the book only used as a reference and showed up to the lectures and got a B.
Grades pretty tough, so be specific with your answers. No homework only 8 quizzes and 2 tests. Show up to lectures, most of the info on quizzes and tests are from the lectures. Never read book only used for reference. Received a B and trust me it was hard and I had to work for it.
Great professor! He is interested in what he is talking about and he makes it somewhat interesting for students. The structure of his class is very clear so you know what you have to do to get the grade you want. I definitely recommend him for any history class!
I'm majoring in history and I hated this class. I would study 2 hours for a 10 point quiz and get a C. He's a tough grader, and a bad quality teacher. His voice makes my ears ring which makes me subconsciously tune him out. His choice of vocabulary is incredibly unnecessary and ridiculous. My least favorite class, and I LOVE history!
Apparently some people don't know what a college level course is like; I thought he did a great job and I studied my ass off to get the grades I got. Your education isn't something that is given, it's earned. These people need to grow up.
He was a HORRIBLE teacher. I have never done so poorly in a history class. He crams so much information in and its too much for one class period. His multiple choice for his mid term and final were vague. Avoid taking him if you can.
Darbys class was interesting. He has a rather annoying way of lecturing by raising and lowering his voice at random intervals as well as talking without using periods. If you take time to ask questions or act concerned about your grade he will help by raising a grade or two at final time. Overall I dont recommend the class but he is a good teacher.
Really great teacher. Knew the course material VERY well and could lecture for hours on it. I never even got the book, he always covered what I needed to know in class. Will pause in his lectures and ask the class questions, which is great unless you have a class like mine that never responded. Tests can be difficult if you don't study.
The class is mainly based on lectures. He encourages the class to interact and makes himself available for questions. Points are mainly based on quizzes and tests. If you touch on the book, take good notes and follow the study guides the class can be a piece of cake. If you're willing to work and want to learn, then take this class.
If you enjoy history, you will enjoy his class.Be ready to for his midterms and you should be fine.
Excellent professor! Very helpful and clear. Take time to read textbook and follow the study guide for exams and quizzes and you'll do just fine. Treat it without respect and you'll get what you deserve. I'd take any class taught by Darby.
If you are looking for an easy A.THIS IS NOT IT. Prof. Darby makes you work for your grade. His tests consist of an essay portion, short answer, matching & multiple choice. The part most people struggled with was the mult choice.U need to go to the lectures and read your text! Prof Darby is always extremely helpful, he wants his students to do well
I love Darby! He's definitely committed to making sure students understand the concepts to a fault (his only one, I would say.) The bloke is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and I feel like I'm getting a quality education when I walk out of his class.
He is a really nice, energetic guy who knows a lot about the subject. His class is mainly centered around lecture, so if you take good notes and read the book, and study both of them, you will pass. He tells you what to study for with the tests. Honestly a hard class because it requires a lot of studying but he gives you what you need to pass!
Very energetic & yells for his lectures so it's hard to get bored. He wants clear, concise writing in his exams & class participation counts. READ THE BOOK & take notes as that will help you pass. Use historical examples, names & specific events to prove your arguments in your papers. He's hard but you will earn an A if you work hard enough.
His actual class is pretty boring if you aren't into western civilization, but he is a funny character to listen to. He definitely makes you study a lot which is essential to passing the testsquizzes. Sometimes he quizzes you on tiny details that he barely talked about. If you aren't into history, dont take him he isnt an easy A.
He is a lot harder than everybody is saying. Also i walk out of the class every single day with a killer migraine. He is very passionate about this subject and yells his entire lecture.
Mr. Darby is a great teacher, Doesn't give a lot of tests, He is amazing, entertaining and professional in his subject, Teaches History with fashion.
Nice guy, but a really tough grader. Get ready to listen to long lectures, and lots of studying to get a good grade in this class
The quizzes are extremely tough since they are based on lecture and he expects you to go into detail. It is possible to pass if you do well on the midterm and final. Tough grader, but extremely hilarious and has lively lectures. Take his class if you love history and can remember details very well.
He gives amazing lectures, it's hard for me to remember things in history courses, he did a really great job. The structure of my class wasn't great, we had to read the information ourselves for the final and he was going too fast near the end of the semester. I think there should be more tests so you don't forget the information due to overload.
very convoluted teaching method. Often spends entire class days on subjects that are not test material. Lecture based material does not often appear on tests. Spends too much time on one single subject, often spending 15 or more minutes telling te class how to take a test. would not reccomend
I enjoyed the class so much that I considered switching my major to history. Its a lot of information, but Mr. Darby prepares you for tests. You need to put time in studying because Mr. Darby really wants you to comprehend the subject matter, not just remember a few dates. Great class and teacher for non- slackers. I highly recommend the class.
He's a good a good professor. Very knowledgeable and really wants his students to participate.
Darby is a great professor. He knows his stuff and knows what he is talking about. He means well & cares for his students, it's a history class & he wants DETAILS! Normal nothing out of the ordinary . Honestly if you're a lazy student do not take him he makes you work for your grade!! History is my least favorite subject & but I learned a lot w him
such a caring professor. honestly his study guides for exams are exactly what is going to be on the exam. it couldn't be anymore straight forward. his lectures are so easy to follow. didn't read much out of the book, and aced the midterm (history not my best subject) you just need to take good lecture notes and you'll be straight .. don't be lazy.
One of the best professors I've had! His Lectures are very interesting and he gives study guides that have the test questions. You will do well in his class if you put in the effort.
Professor Darby is one of my favorite professors. He is a genuine person and appears to be really happy with his job. He cares about his students, and gives study guides which are very useful. I would highly recommend taking professor Darby any day.
The best history professor Ive ever had. His lectures were funny and full of passion and it really made everything sink in. Hes a sweet man that graded on completion and he GOES OVER THE EXAM ESSAY QUESTIONS like a WEEK before and lets you ask him how to WRITE them so HE will like them! Hes amazing and Id take his class again!
I swear you cannot find a more passionate history teacher that makes lecture ENTERTAINING. likeeeeee im not lying when i say it will make you listen. hes so passionate about history it makes you listen to what he has to say. hes always there to help and he accommodates his students accordingly. he does yell in his lectures but you need it!
The most passionate history professor you will ever find. Spends all of class lecturing, barely takes a breath. Open to discussion and will openly answer your questions, without you feeling stupid. Summer class included a lot of paperwork, homework must be well thought out. Essay exams. Most hw, tests, quizzes, etc. are based off his lectures.
He is a really passionate history prof, I only took this class because I need it for my GE's and I ended learning a lot of history. He is nice and he gives you a lot of chances to pass the class. There's going to be a lot of lectures, homeworks, quizzes, etc.
Hands down the MOST PASSIONATE professor I've ever met! Which made his class inspiring and entertaining. He relies heavily on powerpoints, so as long as you pay attention and take good notes, you won't need to buy the textbook. His tests consists on a few short answers and an essay. Easy A as long as you put in a fair amount of effort.
Darby sets up his students for success when it come to the exams. Be sure to pay attention during lecture and take good notes as it will benefit you for the exams. For the homework, he is lenient in his grading but is no problem so long as you read. Darby's class is not an easy A, but if you do all the work and take notes it should be no problem.
Darby will always know what he is teaching. He goes very detailed in time periods making his lectures very long. He prepares you for his tests and gives you the questions ahead of time so you can prepare on the day of the test. He will always respond to your email if you have a question.
If I could take all my History classes with him I would. His class is all lecture, but he is so passionate about History that you'll enjoy it. I thought I would get tired or bored taking a three hour class, but I never was because he is so interesting. Definitely take him if you can because he is super nice, understanding, and inspirational.
Worst teacher Ive had at Moorpark so far. Yells his entire 2 hour lectures to the point where you have to stop taking notes for a Tylonel break. More advanced class than it seems so make sure youre ready for that. If youre not some A+ student youll have trouble in here. Dropped the class within a month and a half.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I wish I never took it. He lectures the ENTIRE 2 hours with no time to spare. His tests are short answers and essays. No matter if you have a ballpark answer or 99% of it is right its never good enough. He expects every single detail possible and nothing less. Class is absolutely boring and notes arent helpful whatsoever.
Very fair and wants to see students succeed
do not take this class professor Darby screams when he is lecturing during class it will make your ears hurt nice guy when he is taking in his normal voice
Great professor, he really puts a great deal of effort into his courses and expects the same effort in return understandably. He is extremely knowledgeable on the subject manners. His lectures might drag on but take attentive notes, and you will do great on your assignments. Know the historical dates as well as he does! Solid choice professor
while this is the best history class I've ever taken, it was also the most difficult. MUST do the reading and pay attention in class. he lectures the whole time, but he is engaged, and is truly passionate about the subject. Very clear and very helpful professor. Would recommend his class, just be prepared to put in the work!
So many papers, lengthy discussions, readings, and assignments. This professor uses large, advanced words that make it difficult to understand what he's saying. His essay prompts are so long and his study guides are equally confusing. There is also a lot of reading involved. Despite all this, he gives you opportunities to pass.
His preparation for lecture was excellent. You must pay attention to the lecture during the whole lecture. His lecture was very passionate and tried to deliver the message. I will retake his course definitely.
I took him last year for US History over the summer and enjoyed his class because I felt like the workload wasn't as bad as other courses. He doesn't force students to participate in class but his extensive vocabulary sometimes made understanding essay prompts difficult (but I learned a lot of new words).
Be aware. Unless you excel in English and are great with understanding all kinds of vocabulary, dont take this class. For some reason he uses really big words that dont make sense half the time even when I look up the definition. It is extremely hard to interpret his assignments. Not to mention he has really long lectures. He also grades harshly.
He tries really hard to sound smart by using ridiculous vocabulary, he over complicates the instructions for an assignment by writing a bunch of huge bolded words and not getting to the point. Makes the most simple assignments and explanations more complex than they should be. Nice guy, but seriously needs to organize his assignments/class better.
This class was super informative, lecture heavy, and the textbook is mentioned but you don't actually need it. Grading criteria is clear, and the assignments are very straight forward. However, you have to put in effort to get an A. This is not one of those classes you can skate through. I would definitely take this professor again.
This class was pretty okay, if you put in the work youll get a good grade. Be warned that with assignments, he uses a lot of wordy language which might be challenging to understand. Will need to do the reading in order to do well on assignments, no extra credit, provides PDF of textbook, and responds fast to emails. Overall solid class.
He is very strict on due dates. The only poor experience I had was when he had the instructions on submitting homework from before COVID, which said to turn in a hand copy in class. When I tried, he said I needed to turn it in on canvas, and even though I had the work done on time, he gave me an automatic 50% penalty for being late.
This class is hard. Nothing is good enough for this professor, no matter how hard you try. Harsh grader, heavy reading, lengthy lectures, and all tests are short response essays. This professor is also a vocabulist, making things much more complicated than they should be. If you are not passionate about history, I highly do not recommend.
He is passionate and easy to listen to when he lectures.
I really enjoyed this class and although it was a little difficult in the beginning because of his extensive vocabulary, Professor Darby is very caring and wants you to succeed in his class. He does not do extra credit so make sure you submit all your work. Beware!! This is not a class you can skate your way through, you gotta work for your grade.
Genuinely cares and actually reads your submitted work throughly.
Professor Darby is a great teacher, the only thing that I found difficult is his usage of large vocabulary, but other than that he was great. You can tell he really likes history, and he kept me engaged. He really reads through your essays and provides great feedback. He gives plenty of time to complete your assignments.
Prof. Darby has the most enthusiastic lectures about history. People often complain about his often convoluted vocabulary, but that's a good problem to encounter in college. His assignments were poorly formatted but were perfectly reasonable to complete as we always had a week to respond to multiple short essay prompts. I plan to take again
Professor Darby is a horrible teacher. He took over a month to input grades and give me comments on my assignments resulting in a string of poor results that could have been prevented if only he had been a more present teacher. After I emailed him suggesting his errors he shrugged me off like I could have prevented everything. Terrible guy BEWARE!
Truly a great teacher! Would recommend
Beyond the pitfalls present in many online courses such as poorly formatted text and sources, Prof. Darby's course was smooth sailing. As long as you watch and read the provided material the assignment questions, although they have many parts, are fairly straightforward. The midterm and final were simple and also based heavily on the reading.
Be ready to write 5-10 short answer essay questions weekly after 10-20 pages of reading. Darby's communication is verbose, but easy enough to interpret with a thesaurus. The source material is usually rich and providing detailed responses is easy if youre thorough. His lectures are brimming with energy and passion, he loves what he teaches.
He grades terribly hard and makes it almost impossible to get a perfect or near perfect score on any of his assignments. His assignments take so long and the directions are not very clear. Although he gives good feedback, the grading is just not it. Also, the lectures he posts are around 3hrs long so get ready to sit and listen. I do not recommend.
If you aren't ready to pick apart word vomit and redundant explanations, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. You have to sit and look up each word he says. Assignments and lectures would be easier to absorb if he didn't explain everything with demanding vocabulary. He should've been an english teacher instead. He's a Sesquipedalian. SAVE YOURSELF
Unnecessarily harsh grader. Uses unnecessarily large words, but marks me down because he doesn't know what “autarkic” means. Went out of his way to make the final less points so I don't meet the threshold for a B, and refused to round my grade (which was 3 points away from a B). Graded my “exceptional essay” an 80%. Not worth.
Professor Darby's class is challenging but worthwhile. His lectures are engaging, though lengthy. Assignments require thorough understanding of the material. unstuck ai was a great study aid alongside the textbook.
Prof Darby doesn't answer emails or give help. I repeatedly asked how to improve, but he only answered I was doing sufficient. On last 2 assignments, he tanked my grade based on a vague rubric and instructions. He grades harshly and randomly. I've gotten all A's & 5's on AP tests, so I'm capable of the class. Prof Darby doesn't work with students.
I enjoyed his class and the lectures were interesting but very long. Professor Darby provides you with 3 or 4 zoom lectures per week that could easily exceed 4 hours. While I was intimidated by this originally, I spaced them out throughout the week and did fine. As long as you apply yourself and analyze the readings you will be fine. He grades fair
THIS IS THE ONLY REVIEW YOU NEED. Darby is an EXTREMELY harsh grader. Get ready to sit through 3-4 hour long lectures, read long passages, and write hyperspecific discussion posts. If you're a genius who is REALLY good at writing and enjoy challenging classes, you'll do fine. If you're not, pick another teacher or class. I don't recommend at all.
