Davies is an Awesome guy. good class to take during heavy load since its so easy. easy tests, fun class, flexible.
Actually, I took MUS 1000 with Dr. Davies first. I liked him so much I took him again for MUS 1900. He's a really nice guy and his tests aren't hard. He explains everything very well. But there's a lot of memorization in the 1900 class. MUS 1000 was mostly listening stuff. He's just a nice guy.
He plays the cello, but very out of tune.

He's rad!
Always a great class.
So many good times in his class. I miss those days, lol

Its a music class!!! Very easy but also interesting. He gives study guides and puts alot of emphasis on attending concerts. Expect to attend 4+ concerts in this class. Good grading scale and repectively fair. Attendance counts...
Very interesting and entertaining class, I would gladly take him again and recommend him to anyone interested in music!
He was constantly unprepared and doing things at the last minute. I disliked him a lot.
He is the most organized teacher I have had this semester! This class was fun and interesting! I took this class for my upper division gen. ed. He was great! I would take him again! You do have to attend 4 concerts during the semester.
For me, class was a bit boring but did help me to appreciate American Music more. His review sheets for the quizzes online are outdated but an A, at least an A- is highly achievable.
He was a good teacher, very interested in music and funny. The review sheets for the exams were nice to go off of, though they were vague. It would have been nice to see overheads more or power points so I know what to write in my notes. Overall, pretty fun class. Concert attendance was fun.
Really one of the best teacher, if not the best teacher I have ever had. He is kind, caring, funny and understanding. He has so much knowledge. Go to class even tho its early, listen and laugh. Don't be afraid to ask questions, everyone has questions in theory. If you fall behind talk to him. He will help u no matter what. I LOVE DR. DAVIES!
I learned so much in this class. I took it over the summer & while lectures seemed a bit long, Dr. Davies really tried to make the class fun. He gave study guides & also used a curve for tests. We had to attend 2 concerts & write a report on 1 of them. Lectures were sometimes hard to follow, so using study guides & reading is a must for tests.
Easy and interesting class. If you take quality notes and use the study guides you'll ace the class. Exams are completely multiple choice and are graded on a curve.
I enjoyed the summer class, though it was accelerated. Mr. Davies has enthusiasm and a relaxed teaching style, which I think is conducive to learning. It's not hard to get an A. I highly recommend this class.
extremely biased. simply unprofessional.
I did not enjoy his class or him as an instructor. We had to attend four out of class performances, which I did not feel was very fair. He is definitely full of himself. I would not recommend him as a teacher for any class. Very dull, not willing to work with students.
This theory class was very hard! However, he is a great professor, and although he does grade you and does not let anyone get away with anything, he is fair! I think Dr. Davies is one of the best professors I have ever had. Hard class though. . .
One of the greatest professors. Teaches crystal clear. Easy class. Easy A. Just be there all the time to take notes and get the information. You study = passing the tests. Very easy class. Great information given. Great professor.
Dr. Davies is great. Super easy class! Quizzes are not too difficult, just study a little... attendance 10 times a semester at random.. go to the concerts write ur report guaranteed B atleast
Makes the class interesting and his assignements and quizzes are easy if you study. Do everything and study it's at least a B. If you don't study then what the hell are you doing in college? Just drop out and continue taking barista jobs or flipping burgers (if they're still needed). Every class is easy, just freaking study and ask questions!!!
His class was easy if you go to class and listen to his lectures. Make sure to go the day before the quiz he tells you what to know. Not too difficult. Have to go to 4 concerts. 6 quizes, one being the final which is the same as a normal quiz. All about 50 questions. Not too hard. He is nice.
Great teacher, lectures are entertaining because of his teaching style. Class requires quizzes that you'll do fine on as long as you study a little and mandatory concert attendance. I'd recommend him.
I took this class over winter. Sadly, the textbook and listening CDs were required. It would be difficult get by without them. Class consisted of 3 multiple choice exams, mandatory concert attendances, and 1 two page concert report. Not the most interesting subject to learn, but Prof Davies is so passionate about it you can't help but be interested
This guy is a great teacher. Not much else to say that's already been said. Took him last summer, and the class was not all that bad despite it being crammed into 5 weeks. It was kind of enjoyable, and a breathe of fresh air compared to some classes. Take this class with Davies if you get a chance.
Easy!
I have him for music appreciation and I was very surprised how interesting this class was! I took it in high school but Dr. Davies made it fun and intesting. I actually appreciate music now! lol He is an awesome teacher
he is a cool teacher! Make sure you turn in your homework and study for quizzes :)
Really had no idea what I was in for. I learned a lot and now this class got my hooked on all types of music! Quizzes are easy if you read the text and pay attention/take notes. Look at study schedule before quizzes. You are required to go to 4 concerts (huge amount of points) and they are great. Overall, this was my favorite class of the semester.
Great professor! He is really passionate about music. Tests are easy as long as you read the book. Must attend 4 concerts and write 2 reports and attendance is mandatory
Nice guy! Really loves music! Made the class interesting. Easy class, just read the book, and review notes for quizzes, attend concerts, and do 2 concert write ups and you have an A.
Typical musical genius in that he is a bit eccentricj disorganized and scatterbrained, but he knows music. He is very patient with students. His tests are easy and overall his class was easy for me, but I have some previous musical experience.
I can't say enough about Dr. Davies. What an incredible professor. He is brilliant and passionate, he makes anyone want to learn music! I would recommend him to anyone who can take him. Wonderful class, great information, and AMAZING teacher. Take him!!!!
Fabulous professor!! You will learn SO much from him. Tests are easy if you read the book and study, as he gives a study guide for each test, and yes the two concert write-ups. He is a passionate and extremely smart musician. He knows his stuff and has TONS of experience that is obvious in the classroom and when he plays in concerts. Take him!
Reading is a must. Have to attend 4 concerts and write a summary of 2. Concerts were fun.
This teacher is awesome, he definitely loves music! It was pretty much an easy A. You have like 8 test. As long as you pay attention review your note and read the book. This class should be simple. You have to attend 4 concerts, and write 2 concerts write ups. This class is easy take itt.
This music class is very easy as long as you study your notes and the music you have to listen too, some of the music is actually very interesting. the professor teaches very well, you can tell he loves music, he has great humor.(:
This class was pretty easy! Some topics in class are pretty interesting. Just do the study guide and you are guaranteed at least an A or B! Professor is very knowledgeable. We had 6 quizzes (the 6th quiz being our final). And 2 concert writes ups out of the 4 we had to attend. If you follow directions for the paper then you are good to go!
This teacher loves music, but expects you to know everything, class lasts foreverrrrr. Quizzes/tests are extremely difficult. Favors his music majors. I got a "B" but I worked hard for it.
This is a great class! I learned so much about listening to music. Stay on top of concert attendence and study guides and you will do well. Instructor is smart and handsome!
Really great teacher, you will learn a lot from him.
He is a great teacher (at least for the upper GE classes he is). He is really funny and if you take good notes and fill out the study guide, you will have no problem passing the class. He requires you to attend 4 school music concerts which are kind of time consuming. Easy class.
I hate music! However, after taking his class, I did learned from him. I'm not into music so i dont remember everything but he's a really funny person even though he does not look like it. No final exam. The quizzes are pretty much the exams. read the book to pass the quizzes, I recommend it. I hate music and I had to do that to passed the class.
Any professor that does a chimp call into a piano is worth taking. Not a tough class at all. Just study and listen. Davies is a funny guy.
This class is not an easy A
Greatest professor I ever had. The class was an easy A!
It's not an "easy" A, but it's a "doable" A. Attend 4 music perfs & write papers on them. Quizzes straight from the book that also include listening questions from the CD that comes w/ the text. Random attendance days, so don't miss class. Show up, listen, take good notes, use the study guide & write the papers, you'll be fine. He's a funny guy too
Very nice guy; easy tests and Vonnegut attendances with short essays (2). Easy class to take!
the best teacher I've had.
This class is relatively easy as long as you pay attention and do the assignments. He is very passionate about music and has endless knowledge about it.
Nice professor, easy class if you work of it.
Dr. Davies is very clear in his expectations. We had to attend 4 concerts and write about 2 of them. All of his instructions were in the syllabus. It is possible to pass the class without attending all of the lectures, but he takes attendance 10 times randomly, usually the class period after an exam. The book and CD set are a must-have for exams!
He is literally the worst professor I have ever taken at Stan, do no take his class!!! It is hard and he is annoying
Prof has you attend 4 concerts, 2 of which require written reports (which are easy). The book is an easy read, enjoyable if you're into learning music history and he's got a spotify web playlist of what are on. 6 exams (inc. the final), based on reading, and slides (all via black-board), and takes attendance 10x for xtra credit. Great guy and class
Currently taking his Intro to Music class His online tests are difficult so you have to study for them, there's listening portions and questions from the power points You also have to attend 4 concerts It's a doable class but you have to try Takes attendance randomly
If you are looking for a music class to fill a requirement I'd recommend music 3400. Professor Davies has a lot of passion about the class and is entertaining. He takes attendance at random, about 10 times during the semester. All power points and tests are online and super easy. Study the review sheets with the power points and it is an easy A.
Dr. Davies is a wonderful professor! I really enjoyed the lectures that were given.
Boring. Simply goes over slides that seem to be from the publisher. ALL semester, BORING slides. If you have access to the internet, a brain and can use google you'll pass every exam given. No need to read the book, simply review his slides. Must attend 4 concerts, write 2 essays for points. Attendance is the ONLY game changer, will drop grade.
Class is based off of 6 exams, attendance, 4 concert attendances, and 2 concert reports. He posts the PowerPoints on Blackboard, but going to class is important to hear his additional comments and watch videos/listen to the music. Because it is a more foreign subject it requires some studying, but good class if you hate art and are doing your C1.
Great teacher !! online notes! print them out for for you can use on the test. You don't need to read the book ,but the book has songs information that will be on the test. Go for attendance it random, but it costs. Go 4 concerts and 2 reports! Easy just do the work.
Only take if you have an extensive musical background.
Really enjoyed his online winter class American Music. Make sure you can attend 2 live performances in the span of the class
Very nice man and very kind he is willing too help you but I highly recommend you take this class only if you are interested in music or a music major.
I love this professor. He is silly and fun and loves what he does. It's a pretty easy class. Must attend 4 concerts and write a 2-page report on 2 of them. He does take attendance 10 times during the semester which comes out to being 5% of the grade which is not significant. Overall I very highly recommend taking a class with him.
Davies really cares for his music and does a good job teaching. 75% of the grade comes from 6 exams. You must attend concerts and pick a couple to write about. The exams are fairly easy, and attendance is somewhat required. He's pretty humorous which makes the class a little more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this professor. Just show up. A
Takes attendance randomly throughout the semester and weighs heavy on grade. Very passionate about music and nice professor. Have to see 4 live concerts at the school and write a paper on 2. 6 exams total, all online and done at home. Book isn't required but I would recommend to help study for exam, need book for listening examples on exams.
Professor Davies is really passionate about music. His lectures consist of power points, however it is helpful to attend class due to the descriptions about the topics and music examples. Exams are online (including final), homework consist of textbook readings and listening examples. Takes attendance randomly, attend 4 concerts and write 2 reports
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE MUSIC BACKGROUND! You will be lost and confused and he expects you to know and memorize everything. Class is extremely boring. There are 4 required concert attendances, and since all events got cancelled due to corona he turned it into four papers. Good Luck if you have him.
Gives a lot of exams in total there is six of them! I honestly felt like I did not learn as much because I was focused on getting a good grade on the exams since that was 80 percent of our grade. The exams vary from easy to difficult. We also had to attend four concerts and write four papers on it. Do not take unless you really enjoy music history
Do not recommend this professor unless you already have a musical background. Toughest class I've had so far at Stan State. He can come off as rude and inconsiderate most of the time. Class consists of almost daily hw assignments, attending 4 concerts, 4 TIMED quizzes, and a final.
I took this class as a requirement. The test are pretty heavy, but the worst part is that they are timed so it puts a lot of anxiety on you. On top of that he made us write FOUR, 2 page concert reports even after the concerts were locked up until mid November. His grading criteria is also really confusing on them. I don't recommend this class.
Simple coursework: weekly lectures, reading assigned to prep for exam, and 6 total exams (not cumulative). Tests are timed and multiple choice consisting of listening examples from book. Be prepared for tests because there's typically about 1 minute per Q. 4 concert reports about 2-3 pages. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Davies for this course.
Exams make up 85% of the total grade. That's really, really rough, you cannot afford to lose points on the concert reports if you want an A. For the winter semester, we only did 2 concert reports. This class was not easy, but Dr. Davies is very helpful and kind, and readily available over email. I rec this class bc its prob. easier than the others.
This professor is all about music and if you aren't passionate about music like him then this class is not for you. You have to watch all of his power points and tests rely only on the power points. Very little assignments so your test scores depend on your overall grade. I regret taking this class and professor since I wasted so much time.
I would have had an easier time if I made appointments with him to ask for help and if I started working on this class earlier in the semester. His lectures are packed with info, but as long as you study them youll be fine on the exams (6 total). Theres a lot to do/understand, but as long as you dont procrastinate you can probably get an A.
You do not need to buy the textbook for this class!! He gives probably over 95% of the information in the lectures. The lectures are videos and if you take notes based on the exam review sheets you're basically guaranteed to pass. Very chill and enjoyable class.
Don't buy the textbook unless you're taking it online, we never used it and it was $54
If you don't already have music background, don't take this course. Professor Davis is very passionate about music and doesn't let things slide. There are daily hw assignments, 3 exams and a final + required to go to 4 live concerts on campus. He is a cool professor but fully expects you to know your stuff.
The textbook is not needed. He is such a nice and funny professor. Lecture heavy but tries to throw in jokes to lighten the mood. You have to attend 4 school concerts, write 2 papers on them, and do six exams (exams are on canvas).
Attendance required. Must attend concerts and write about them after. Exams are poorly written. Emails from professor are also unclear with the explanations. Textbook required. Expect a range from a C to a B for your grade. There will always be mistakes during lectures and exams so be aware of that.
This class, while difficult, was very useful and he taught the subject pretty well. He requires you to go to 4 concerts on campus, not counting any you perform in, and write about it. He has almost daily homework assignments, 4 exams plus a final. Expect to take a lot of notes and ask questions. Textbook is not mandatory he provides files for you.
I took American Music online in the winter term and there are modules that you go through at your own pace with a test at the end. The tests basically determine what your grade will be because they are 85% while two concert reports make up the rest. Can get by without textbook but test content is in it. Choose two concert videos and write a review
Professor Davies was really a great teacher. He is very passionate about music and his lectures are not boring. The only thing is, you definitely need to study for his exams. The exams are worth 75% of your grade and even missing 2 questions will make it go down. But as long as you have your notes on you, the tests are pretty easy.
Did not have a good experience taking this class with this professor specifically. Found him to be rude; Shows up late, gets his syllabus dates wrong. Has incredibly high standards for students to meet his exact rules but cannot meet those high standards himself and runs the class in a very disorganized manner. RUN
I have never even played an instrument and I enjoyed this class. There was 0 homework, 5 have exams, you have to attend 4 concerts throughout the semester but only write a 2-page report on 2 of them. Lectures were guided and easy to follow, and he would well explain everything. You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches, recommend!
Study for his exams. All exams online. Not a bad teacher, can get really boring. Don't buy the online textbook. Exam #3 hardest. Worked with me when my dad passed away. Very nice! He takes attendance 10 times. Have to go to 4 concerts and write 2 concert reports. Noticed a downfall in exam scores once I started skipping.
