Very Good and interesting and entertaining, i think its because he is also a speech teacher so his voice makes the history lesson come right to life. He Rocks. Never Seen a better history class ever.

I took history with Mr. Defoe. in 1987. I wish I was mature enough at the time to appreciate his teaching. I'm a teacher now and would take a class with him anytime.

This guy is a riot. He looks like a cartoon charecter and speaks like an action hero- with a deep passionate voice and lots of dramatic gestures. Really keeps you entertained, and as long as you can write a decent essay you'll find it a pretty easy class.

i took defoe's class 2 years ago and i STILL tell people how great of a teacher he is. i would recommend his class to anyone! the lectures are interesting and i learned a lot. He's got a great sense of humor and will crack you up!

Defoe is a living legend. The Associated Students have given him the Sierra College Teacher of the Year Award almost every year since he joined the faculty there. I was failing his class but we worked some things out and I ended up with a "B".

This professor is one of the most dynamic lecturers I have ever heard. His presentations are humorous, insightful, and filled with information to make history come alive for his students.

Great teacher. Very entertaining and funny. His class is all about lectures but he is definatley worth taking. It is based on tests and the final, no homework, but you definatley need to study and take time for the tests and term papers.

I've never been able to listen to a teacher lecture for and hour and fifteen minutes before and still be interrested! A wonderful teacher, and a great class to take

Prof. Dan Defoe... what a swell guy. He can be kind of complicated sometimes, but he he's very helpful, indeed. Plus, he's a very nice guy. I also ran into him a few times when he wasn't lecturing. It's not too easy yet not to hard. If you want to take History, use Defoe - he's perfect.

If you follow his lectures you can pass his class.I never studied, took notes & never bought a book & passed with a B. You just have to pay attention and believe me you cant fall alseep in his class, he is so loud! When he explains the war I felt like I was there! He rocks!

Very Intertaining

Defoe is a great teacher. If your a good test taker this class will be a breeze! Not a good test taker? thats okay! He has a few extra credit assignments to make up for low scores. Very interesting. I highly recomend him. As for him being hot? . . . i would love to meet whoever put that. ha! ha!

He is the most interesting history teacher I have ever had. He really has an annoucer style voice and his stories and classroom antics keep you interested. The class is really easy, despite a long term paper assignment (7-10 pages). He gives extra credit to make up for bad test scores or to ensure that you get an A. Midterm/Final are essay format.

Dan Defoe is so incomparably passionate about his subject that he made me envious. He's an exceptional story teller and someitmes I could answer his test questions simply by memory of his lecture. His tests are essay question but he's not a huge stickler for little details. I highly recommend him for all interest levels. He's also very handsome! :)

Mr. Defoe is a really easy teacher. The thing that stands out the most is his voice. The only big thing we had to do was write a ten page essay for part of our final, but that was easy too. This is a good and fun teacher.

He was one of those teachers that make class seem less like class and more like a conversation. His voice keeps you so engaged. Has a very deep understanding of history and never seems to not know an answer to a historical question. My favorite college teacher so far, hands down. Take him for sure.

One of the best teachers at Sierra. He teaches History like he's telling a story, so you are able to remember and itendify with the characters. His side stories are interesting too. I never liked history until I took his class. Now it's very interesting. Thanks Dan!

This guy is a character. If you haven't heard about him I'm surprised, word gets around campus pretty quick I thought. He has this voice... that you HAVE to pay attention to. History is a very dry subject to lecture on ANYWAY; this guy throws in voices and things to liven it up. It's great. Give him a try.

Dan is friggin awesome! His class is so much fun! I've pulled an A on every test just from paying attention to his lectures. The way he teaches makes learning US history very entertaining and fun. I actually look forward to going to his class and I get super pissed when I miss one.

He's a great lecturer. You remember what he's talking about because he makes it interesting. His quizzes are easy too. Just go to class and use the lecture notes and you'll pass for sure.

Attending class is important bcuz 3 quizzes are based from his lectures as do the Midterm, Final. One term paper 7-10pgs long from book. Fair grader, not cotton ninny picky. Very loud projected speaker, like a radio announcer or buzz lightyear from toy story so it's IMPOSSIBLE to fall asleep in his class. Recommend him for history requirments.

Took Defoe for both 17A and 17B. He is a great professor who knows an incredible amount of history. I often wondered if there was something he didnt know. Quizes and tests are pretty easy. Doesnt test on what he doesnt lecture about. Very fair. Highly recommend his classes.

Professor Defoe has a real talent for teaching. He makes learning fun and interesting, and you wouldn't think so with a subject like history. But his passion for history truly shows through his innate ability to almost "reinact" the pages of the history book. Great class!

Great Professor! he is well prepared doesnt seem to use the powerpoints very much but u really dont even need them. He makes his quizzes and test pretty simple, but grades more fairly on written test so if i were u ask for more written test instead of multiple choice

Professor DeFoe does an awesome job explaining his subject, and makes it really hard to doze off because his voice is so loud it keeps you entransed with what he is saying. Read the book to study for the quizzes, they are the hardest thing about the class. One seven page paper, two in-class essays-midterm and final. Give him a shot.

He speaks a lot during the class but he made it so interesting that I didn't mind listening to him. I'm an ESL student and still was able to understand him perfectly. If you pay attention to all his classes, you won't even have to open the book. He can also be very funny.

Awesome Teacher! Seems to love to teach this class becasue he majored in communications. Really seems to care, and clarifys everything he expects out of speeches. There are only five speeches required, and you can make up at the end of the semester if needed, and a midterm which was really easy. He has a radio voice, and is very fun to listen to!

Mr. Defoe is a really hardcore guy. I've had him the past 2 semesters and it's amazing how he draws you into the stories. Tests and quizzes were fair and there's no reason why you can't get an A or a B out of either of his classes. I got 2 A's and learned alot. Mission accomplished.

Defoe is a consummate professional. History presented at its best. As for the textbooks, save your money on Give Me Liberty (never opened it), but you must have Voices of Freedom.

Whenever I hear anyone in class or on campus talk about which history teacher to take I always blurb in and say you must take Defoe. BEST. He has a big heart and big passion for teaching.

This guy is a book! He knows everything and is a great story teller. Listen good, take detailed notes, and DO review the book and you get an A. I did. He doesn't spoon feed you the answers on the test so do review the text. You'll learn alot. He is a smart funny charismatic guy! Fun class! Beware his retro fashion sense!

Dan is an awesome TEACHER, and if you actally go to class and listen to the lectures he tells you exactly what is going to be on the quizzes and the midterm! Go2class every day!Only read RIGHT BEFORE quizes. There is little things in the book that will be on the quizes that if you read2soon you will 4get. midterm&final you will see that there is a long list of subjects to choose from. All you do is pick the subjects you know and write about them, as if you where telling a story in a newspaper. Thats it!

I used to hate history until I took 17A with Defoe. He is the best teacher I have had at Sierra College. I learned so much in this class and the way he tells stories is amazing. It s amazing how you will actually remember the stories! He is fair and gives easy quizes and tests. I would recommend him for EVERYONE! The paper is easy, dont worry!

He tells the story of American History as if he was there and really knows what went on. He is very interesting to listen to, which is a plus with history it can get boring sometimes.

What can I say. He's just that good of a professor. Just be sure to show up for every session. If your looking for someone who doesn't give homework to take home, then is your kind of teacher. Just be prepared for quizzes and the term paper. Other than that, the key to passing is listening and writing the key points of his lectures.

If your're one of those people who hates history, you will learn to love it after you take Defoe. He tells it like a story and there is little homework involved. In the Pre DVR days I recorded this class for my boyfriend. I should have added it because I couldn't stop watching his classes. I thought his explanations depicted an interesting telling of History. I have to take History to transfer and will be taking his class. He is a really great speaker.

I took History 17A, 17B, and Comm 1 with Defoe and he is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He definitely knows the subjects well and passes on his passion to his students. His classes are very entertaining and if you show up and pay attention you shouldn't have a problem.

His quizzes, tests, and essays aren't exactly easy though. I did get an A in the class, but I worked my butt off for it. You have to put in a lot of studying time. However, it's worth it.

DeFoe is amazing, the best instructor at Sierra. I highly recommend his distance TV viewing classes. You can watch the lectures through itunes whenever you want. I love DeFoe! He makes history actually fun!

He is engaging and not boring...BUT he delivers an extremely biased account of history. I am there to get correct, accurate, unbiased information about history. Instead I'm having to hear constant denigration of white people and the inherent angelicness of minorities. I'm in the 2nd week and I have to drop cuz I can't take this slanted bias.

I took Defoe TV class for Hist17A&B. I really enjoyed his class. He is always very interesting and you can tell he loves what he teaches. He gives distance learners plenty of time to get to the testing center to take the test and he will always tell you exactly what will be on the test. If you need to take a history class I highly recommend his.

I took his TV class and it was nice to be able to have all his lectures downloaded to my computer. The only drawback to taking his TV class is that you don't get feel his overwhelming voice in the same way as you would in person and found myself falling asleep during the lectures. I have taken his comm class and he was AMAZING.

Dan Defoe is an excellent teacher !! With a golden voice and passion for the subject, you WILL not be bored. I took his class this summer and wish that the summer was longer. The midterm and final were not hard but writing intensive and if you were in class and remember his stories you will have no problems.

I had Mr. Defoe as a teacher back in 1998 for history 17A and 17B. Sounds like he's still a great teacher who makes history entertaining and exciting. He truly deserves recognition for the wonderful teacher he is! He has my vote!

Excellent prof. You will have to pay attention to the lectures and do reading in the textbook for the tests, but there wasn't any other hw. The tests aren't the easiest, but if you pay attention and do the reading you'll be ok. Has an awesome radio voice, highly recommend.

He is a great teacher. He makes connections in history that are fascinating. He tells great stories from history that are not the normal ones everyone knows. If you listen to every lecture (which is easy to do) and take notes and read some from text you will do good in the class. His tests come right from the lectures.

This is definitely the most interesting history class I have ever taken and I highly recommend his 17A class! There's no class work (just three short quizzes and a written midterm and final). My suggestion: record his lectures and study from there.

Professor Defoe is very passionate about History. He is a great story teller. The class was 100% lecture with very little interaction except for questions. 3 quizzes, Blue Book essay style Mid-term and Final, and a 10 page Term Paper. He grades the Term Paper hard! He grades the Mid-term/Final extremely generously!

Ok so the thing about Dan Defoe is that he is an awesome teacher and can make history interesting, HOWEVER his class is an all lecture class. Some students need homework or some kind of class work to understand better and help save your grade because tests and quizzes suck for you. If that's the case do not take his class, otherwise go for it!

I transferred to a university but keep looking for more of his classes to take - practically just for personal interest! (He's incredible!) The lectures are vivid and enthralling. He LOVES his job, too (key)

I enjoyed his Hist. 1A so much, I returned for 1B. The class is built entirely on his lectures and PowerPoints. Text books are supplemental reading. Midterm & Final are the same format: write to short essays and two fully-developed long essays about topics covered in lecture. He's an excellent historian and lecturer. Beautiful voice! Very good!

He knows what he's talking about. Professor DeFoe makes history interesting & you remember what's going on. Don't take attendance, so up to you if you pass or fail. & you don't know if you're passing or failing bc it doesn't show on canvas. & rent Voice of Freedom not the big text book because I've never used it. Gives you quiz answer, go to class!

DeFoe is a charasmatic professor who is passionate about history. I learned so much from his class and would reccomend him to ANYONE. The 7-9 page term paper is the hardest part of his class, but his quizzes are easy if you listen to the lectures. He gives little to no homework and really makes history come alive! Take his class for a good laugh!

The class was a breeze for me that is, look at the slides the day before the quizzes and you should get at least a B, you honestly don't need any book for this class, you could just use the one at the library if he even assigns anything from their "voices of freedom". his lectures are like stories, if you miss a class you'll be confused. Great Guy!

Dan Defoe is an amazing teacher. He is very nice, friendly, clear about what he wants from you. He pretty much gives you the answers in class for the miderm and exams. As long as you attend class and listen to his lectures and take good notes then u will get a good grade. There r 3 quizzes I midterm and I final plus a paper. He is awesome!!!!!!!

Dan Defoe knows his stuff. He is definitely a human history book and it shows in his lectures. His material in lectures can be a bit boring some times, but some parts of history aren't too exciting. He pretty much gives you whats going to be on each quiz. (there's 3). And his midterm and final are essay style. He does give extra credit as well.

Professor DeFoe is the best history teacherprofessor I've ever had! Prior to taking this course, I was not really interested in the old-school history (prior to 1877), but I can now say I'm a fan . His lectures are very vivid and interesting. You can tell he loves what he's doing. You'll do well on exams if you come to class and pay attention.

He takes history very seriously. Class is easy. He lectures the entire class and it gets boring. He gives what will be on the three quizzes and there is a 7 page paper due at the end. The midterm and final are both essay questions. Pay attention in class and take good notes.

Do yourself a favor, take his class. Dan could lecture on the history of ranch dressing and I'd still be on the edge of my seat.

One 7 page term paper, about 4 or 5 multiple choice quizzes (as long as you take notes on lectures you will be fine), midterm in bluebook with easy prompts for paragraphs, and final was a little hard (51 multiple choice questions). All of the multiple choice quizzes and tests had 1 or 2 extra credit questions. He makes his lectures interesting.

Daniel DeFoe is an incredible professor. The class was not overly easy but not at all hard to earn an A if proper effort is put in. Whether I asked him questions after class or during his office hours Professor DeFoe was always very helpful. There are not too many tests of quizzes, but be sure to write tons of notes. Everything is based off notes.

AMAZING teacher! His lectures are interesting and his background in television really comes through. He tells you EXACTLY what to study for tests. You can get through without any of the reading because his lectures are so detailed. Don't miss class or you'll miss important info.

I took his 17A class last semester and 17B is just as good. His lectures are interesting and his delivery is fantastic (thanks to his television/radio background). He reviews for tests in advance and tells you EXACTLY what to study for. You can get through without the books as long as you don't miss any classes.

Professor Defoe is the best educator I have encountered in my studies so far. He is an excellent orator, which I am sure was aided by his decades of experience in the radio industry. He drives his courses through an array of landmark events and interpretations of freedom. The tests are based on lecture and he points out what to take notes on. 10/10

Don't think twice about taking Defoe's class, I took 17A/B with him and I'm really glad I did. He's very entertaining and tells you everything you need to know for the quizzes as well as the final. I recommend writing the term paper during the first few weeks so the rest of the semester is smooth-sailing, one less thing to do during finals.

Took his summer class, graded by midterm (bluebook), term paper (7-9 pages), and final (multiple choice). All of which were super easy to do and got an A in the class. He was definitely one of the best lecturers in my life, it's hard to not stay engaged with the discussed topic. I never opened the book, just write down what he says.

Loved this class so much I had no choice but to take 17B with him as well. I actually learned a lot and recieved an A in the class.

Professor Defoe's classes are lecture heavy but speaks with enthusiasm and makes the class easy to follow. 3 Tests - all written responses. He gives you the prompts a class or two before the exam and you usually only need to pick 2 or 3 the respond two. One large paper assignment that you are told about 1st day of class.

He will give you a good lecture to listen to. It is a straightforward history class. He has a review before the exams so you know what to study for. There is only one paper due the 14th week, besides that no homework. His exams are fair and his midterm and Final have the same layout. Minimum effort will get you a good grade.

The best professor at Sierra! DeFoe is an amazing lecturer. He really turns history into a story that you can't stop listening to. Everything on the tests comes directly from the lectures. 3 quizzes, written midterm, final, and 7-9 page paper. He also has the voice of God and most-interesting-man-in-the-world vibe. He's retiring soon so take him!

So knowledgeable on his subject, he definitely makes history intriguing! His was the first history class I've ever been interested in, and was sad when it was over. Gives EC options, & study questions a week in advance which you're allowed to record. No homework other than a term paper. 2 MC tests, 2 written. 1 of the best teachers I've ever had!

It's impossible to get bored in this class with the way he presents it, so enjoyable to attend lectures. Talks about history and relates it to present issues. Extremely knowledgeable. Took him for 17B too and made me be a double major for U.S. History. Take him! only 3 quizzes, 1 term paper, and Midterm and Final are all written but he tells you exactly what is on the test. He made history so much fun. Definitely show up that is when he goes over test Q's. Just Amazing!

Dan Defoe made this EuroHist major care about American History! From engaging in back-and-forth commentary during class to great comments on my essays, he made the field make sense. If you're afraid history is boring names-and-dates, think again: Defoe turns it into a fascinating ongoing narrative.

He is very Good. Incredible Speaker. He makes the stories very simple and exciting.

Dan is the best teacher I've ever had. His lectures are always entertaining and he is very personable. This is the third class of his I've taken and I am heartbroken that he doesn't teach any others. He grades on his tests (which for this course are essay format) and the material is what he lectures on. There is also an essay due at the end.

Dan Defoe is such a great teacher. History is known to be sort of boring, but he makes his lectures really interesting and he is pretty funny. I would absolutly recommend taking history with him. Just go to class, and study hard for the 3 quizzes, midtem, and final he gives!

This was my second time taking Prof. Defoe and he was just as great of a teacher as the first time! His lectures are very engaging and they make history so interesting. Test questions come from the lectures, so attend every class and take lots of notes. 3 quizzes, one written midterm, and a final. Highly recommended and a must take!

Second time taking this professor. I really like his lectures but this lectures had too many documentaries for my taste. At times it felt like the class I paid for was more for Netflix than it was on Defoe. Really good teacher though, easy to doze off because he lectures the entire period. three exams, one group project, easy grader.

Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had, and I'm not even a history major! His lectures are very long, but relevant and interesting. He requires a textbook but I got by without it by just taking notes. All in all, 100% recommend him!

Professor Defoe is a great teacher and he loves to teach this subject. Take him for all your history classes.

If you are a visual learner do not take this class, but if you are an auditory learner you should be fine. It is all lectures so it requires you to take a heavy amount of notes. If you want to keep up with his lectures you can record them and go back & listen to them before quizzes. He also gives you really good study guides before the quizzes.

Prof. Defoe is a great professor. I personally prefer lecture based teaching, and he really tells the story of America in a way that's easy to pay attention to. He definitely knows his stuff and you will be lucky to get him.

he's ok. goes off track. some people need to do a lot of reading to keep up. i skipped class a few times and still got a high grade. dresses like a revolutionary war vampire. likes game of thrones.

Took 'em over the Summer. Really basic syllabus with 2 opportunities for Extra Credit. Midterm/Final- BLUE BOOK and the Term Paper is in response to 1 of the Required Text. You'll have to set aside time for him as he ONLY Lectures or shows CLIPS/VIDEOS.

Defoe's lectures are interesting and passionate, he clearly cares for this subject and wants his students to truly understand history. He outlines what will be on the quizzes, so there's no guessing or date memorization necessary. The midterm and final are bluebook essays, and he gives you plenty of topic options. Taken him a few times, he's seriously one of the best history teachers you can get. Amazing speaking voice and great lectures, even if you hate history, you are never bored. DeFoe is simply an amazing professor. His lectures are so interesting and you feel as if you're a part of modern U.S. history. Attend every class and take lots of notes and you shouldn't have any problem with the three written exams. The group project is a historical magazine, and the key is starting way easy. If you have the choice, take him!!

This teacher's voice makes it easy to listen to a whole class of what is basically adult story time. Take some notes, because the power points are not detailed enough to study from. As with most history classes, if you miss class you'll have to read the book, but i didn't use the book at all. Professor is a nice guy, and he offers extra credit.

Super cool teacher, took him for both 17A and 17B and loved it. You can joke around with him even if he looks serious, he just wants you to pay attention and to give him and your classmates respect. Note heavy and be sure to do all the extra credit. Looks like a vampire in the winter and a thug in the summer but dont let that scare you lol

He's an amazing storyteller that is passionate about what he teaches. One of those teachers that will make you love the subject if you hadn't already. I've raved about him to all my friends. Quizzes are based on study guides that he provides, which are based on his lectures.

Very passionate about the source material. A bit stern but will understand and listen if you are having problems. Lecture heavy class, a majority of the class will be spent taking notes, if you're looking for something more interactive you may want to try another teacher. Only things he grades are a term paper, three quizzes and the midterm/final.

Great class and great professor. The class is all lecture but the professor is an amazing orator with a radio voice, class feels more like story time than work. Favorite class I took this term. Class is broken into 3 quizzes, 2 tests, and a term paper so each is weighted pretty heavily, but none are too difficult. Throughly enjoyed the class.

defoe is the man, lovely voice and he makes class interesting with his lectures. If you make a mistake or answer incorrectly, he won't discriminate you, he will help! Very approachable if you let him know ahead of time if you won't make it to class, he will work with you. Find a buddy if you can't make it to class and have them record each lecture.

Defoe isn't trying to be your best friend, but he will be your best professor. The class is super straightforward; I didn't use the textbook and honestly felt like I didn't need to take a ton of notes because he tells you what will be on the quizzes and tests. He makes a lot of subtle and sometimes weird, but nonetheless memorable jokes.

If you're in 17A, you'll never use the textbook. (You do need the reader, though). DeFoe is a great storyteller, which helps because the class is 100% lecture-based. Your grade is based on tests. Only homework is one single term paper. I loved it because I'm an auditory learner, but if you prefer to boost your grade with assignments, look elsewhere

DeFoe gives you all the material you need to get an A on all of the quizzes and offers study guides for the final and midterm. The powerpoint isn't enough to go off of so make sure you're taking notes. He actually makes lectures very interesting. Absolutely no phones or he will kick you out. Pretty laid back otherwise.

DeFoe loves what he does and his style of teaching is immersive and easy to follow along with. Few assignments. Lecture heavy, but if you follow along the tests are a breeze. Hardly used textbooks. Provides plenty of extra credit. "Old fashioned" so not easily accessible outside class, but straightforward and pleasantly predictable

Professor DeFoe is a great professor. He is lecture-heavy, and good note-taking skills are necessary for this class, although I would say that attendance is not always mandatory. You can miss a few classes and still succeed. You don't need the textbooks necessarily, and your grade is dependent on how well you do on two easy tests and an essay.

He has an amazing deep speaking voice. I took his class in the summer, so there was only 2 tests and 1 assignment. The class was not too engaging, I prefer professor Roesk. The test is writing an essay about the lectures.

It's obvious that Defoe is passionate about history, and a level of mastery is evident in his articulation of it. The lectures are engaging, sometimes reach entertainment. If you read along in the textbook with the lectures, you should have a sufficient understanding of the class material. Your grade is dependent on only a few assignments.

Amazing professor. He cares deeply about events in our history, covers topics you might have never discovered otherwise, and his lecture is amazing. His speaking voice and story-telling are unparalleled by any professor I've had, which helps you care more about what he's saying and helps history feel more like learning and less like memorizing.

Professor is engaging and breaks down concepts well. Textbook is optional but attending class is a must. Leveraged unstuckstudy ai and found it helpful for quick study prep alongside the lectures.
