The tests can be hard. You must study a lot for the tests. Only two tests during the semester. He is picky about writing. On anything you turn in you will get docked points for spelling and major grammar issues. I really enjoyed the class.
Bro Dewey is a great teacher. He does move really fast, so be sure to ask lots of questions if you don't understand something.
Dewey is such a great teacher and is incredibly brilliant. Don't hesitate to ask him any question if you are confused, he will make it clear.
Dewey is a good teacher, but he is pretty intense. All work has to be turned in on time and can't have any grammar errors. He tests are hard, but if you stud well you can do well on them.
Brother Dewey is so awesome! I love his classes because he makes things very clear and doesn't care if he has to spend all class period trying to make you understand.
This is a good class. Just like any other class make sure you study. Homework for this class is study. If you take notes in class and study you will pass. The labs are pretty cool and so was the field trip. This class was enjoyable.
Dewey is a great teacher! His classes are hard, but he teaches the complex material in a way that is understandable. I love taking classes from Brother Dewey. I always learn a ton.
This is great introductory course to horticulture. Brother Dewey does a wonderful job at preparing his students for tests. As long as you study you will pass this class.
Brother Dewey is an awesome teacher. He knows his stuff but you MUST study hard for his class. Can be unorganized and sometimes will give you an assignment and then something will happen and you won't end up getting the credit for it. Seems to care about his students and wants you to succeed in life.
Brother Dewey is a really good teacher. He is just a fast talker and a hard grader. Be prepared to take very detailed notes and do not be afraid to ask him to slow down and explain things. When it comes to papers make sure you turn them in early for the TA to look over. He is very strict on grammar! This is a fun class but be sure to study.
Bro. Dewey is not an easy teacher, so study hard and TAKE GOOD NOTES. If you need help with something he will help and he has a tutor available. He gives examples that are applicaple to real life situations to help you understand topics, which I really liked. He is super funny and a great teacher who cares about his students!
Brother Dewey treats his students like responsible adults and holds us to a higher standard. I understand his emphasis on grammer in his papers. We are old enough to know how to spell and write proper english and in the real world, that's important. I appreciate his high standard of teaching. I grew alot because I had to stretch myself and aim high
Be prepared to study, ask questions, and use study groups. Study before class, after class, and in between. You will learn lots of information. Allow lots of time to take an exam.
Work hard and go over your notes weekly.
Pay attention in class and review notes often. There aren't any surprises on tests.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher, go to class, take good note, study them, and ask questions about the material and you'll do just fine. He is very smart and funny, so class is enjoyable.
Brother Dewey is the man! He knows his stuff and wants you to know the material very well. If you take good notes and study hard you will do fine. There are only two test in the class so make sure you do well on these test.
Great class. The field trip was amazing. Great teacher. I would take from him again. The work is hard, but you learn and he provides resources to get outside help.
Great teacher! If you don't understand something, he will re-explain in different terms until you do understand.
Awesome teacher!! Made class fun. Very chill. Show up to class take good notes and study them and you're good!
Great teacher. KNOW YOUR STUFF!!! STUDY.
Good teacher, tests are difficult so studying is a must!
Horticulture and agriculture students can both enjoy this class. He wants you to learn. It doesn't matter to him how much of the material is covered as long as you understand. His tests expect you to know anything from the power points or class discussion, but they are fair. You can't skip class or you will be lost. He keeps class interesting.
Really funny guy. He's very fair in his grading and helpful. His tests are tricky but if you study the material you'll be fine.
He is a great teacher,if you don't understand something it is your own fault. He always asks if there are any question and wont move on until all questions are answered. If you have an issue with the class in general talk to him he makes changes!
He is a great teacher! Super fun, really excited about what he is teaching, but has some crazy intense exams (so STUDY!!!). Attendance isn't mandatory in the sense that he takes roll, but you will want to be there for his lectures because if he talks about it it is fair game for a test.
This is a hard class for a 122 level course. He expects you to memorize everything he says in class and everything on power point slides. If I had known, I would not have taken this class from him or would enroll in fewer credits while taking this class.
Brother Dewey is a very good teacher. He explains the material extremely well and is very concerned if the students are understanding it. He is also very entertaining and the class goes by fast because I never get bored. I can tell that he has a lot of knowledge in this field and he is very qualified to teach this class.
Loved this teacher! He is super fun and full of hunting stories that keep ya awake! He does a great job explaining concepts and taking time to make sure each student understands the content.
He is a great teacher that will go at the students rate in order for every person to understand. He may say that his tests only take about 2-3 hours, but they really take closer to 5-7 hours so schedule accordingly. If you don't understand something completely ask. Overall though he is a wonderful teacher and very funny.
This class was mostly class discussion. Attending would be a lot more beneficial than just looking at his power points. Take good notes and study hard. He's a great teacher and considerately goes at the students' pace.
good teacher willing to help you and make sure you know your stuff but also very eager to move onto new material. moves through material fairly fast. test are very difficult if you miss class. even though he does okay at teaching i would not recommend his agron122 class
Brother Dewey is a great teacher, his classes are hard, because he makes you study, and demands you to be a adult, but you will learn and have fun.
Dewey is an awesome teacher. He knows his stuff and he teaches in a way that you can understand. Makes class fun.
Bro. Dewey is incredibly knowledgeable on the topic of horticulture and he is a great guy but he is not a good teacher. He expects you to read his mind and think the exact way he thinks. Not a good way to help us learn. I do not recommend taking this class from him. It is too tough for an intro to agronomy class.
Bro. Dewey's classes are definitely some of the hardest classes you will take in the program. In the end though you really end up learning a lot. You need to be willing to put a LOT of time into studying and being prepared for the exams.
He is tough but fair.He will teach you the material well but you need to do your part and study for the tests.
Bro. Dewey was a great teacher, he would bring object lessons to help us learn & sometimes that was food to eat. No book required so you had to take really good notes because that is the material he tests on. Study your notes through out each section for the tests are difficult on average I spent about 2 hours on each test & the final took 4 hours.
Brother Dewey is awesome. I would recommend him for any of his classes. Smart guy, good lectures, helps you any time you ask. Tests were pretty tough but if you study you shouldnt have a problem
I loved Bro. Dewey. His lectures were interesting and he made plant science fun to learn about. He did intimidate me a little but other then that fun class!
He is straight forward and fair. You don't need a text book. You are tested on what he talks about in class and nothing else. His tests can seem difficult, but aren't that bad if you have studied your notes well. Most of your grade comes from test scores. He is a very good teacher and a great guy.
Brother Dewey is an amazing teacher. He is VERY fair and open. He does not mind question. He wants you to understand what is happening. The class is slightly hard BUT if you study, listen, take notes in class, and ask question you should be just fine. Meeting with the TA will also help. I would take Brother Dewey for any kind of class.
He was easy to follow and very helpful. Any time I had a conflict or question, he was there to help. I would recommend taking this class from Brother Dewey.
Brother Dewey is a super good teacher, he knows his stuff. The tests are kind of challenging but other than that he is really good and helpful.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher! If you ask a question, he makes sure you understand what he is saying. If he does not know the answer, he searches it out for you. He is extremely helpful and fair with how he runs the class. You will learn a ton from him.
Brother D is a great man.If you do everything you can study wise you will do ok in his class. He tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests and that is everything. VERY HARD. I would suggest him anyways.
Dewey cares about grammar/ spelling. He takes a radical approach on his 100pt paper! If you make 5 grammar or spelling mistakes you get a 0%; if you did not turn it in 2 weeks early. He's a good explainer but is not always ready for his labs. In plant prop he only has a midterm & final. They both take about 4-7 hrs and are tough but doable.
He is a hard teacher to take tests from but a really cool guy who loves the outdoors
Dewey is a fantastic teacher that really cares about being a good teacher. The tests are HARD, not going to lie, but if you study, (and really study!!) you should do fine.
Super great teacher!Moves through material quickly and has really hard exams (if you don't study)
Exams are super hard if you are not prepared. Not many things get graded so the exams count for a lot. He's a great teacher and always makes time to answer questions!
He is a really good teacher, but is very picky on grammar. It was a pain, but very useful in the real world. He is also very blunt and honest on what he thinks and feels. He is a very good teacher.
Brother Dewey's classes are rough! You need to make sure you attend each class. He goes over the lecture and post the powerpoints on ilearn but don't rely on those to help you much. If you study for the test and ask questions you will do just fine. Make sure to turn in your paper two weeks early, he isn't kidding when he says he will give you a 0%!
Spontaneous teacher, great class, lots of mini field trips, hands on labs, good food!
I understood the material very well. Only the name quiz sucked the life out of my grade. Ridiculous!!! Because of the name quiz i my grade went very low. This defeats the purpose of this class. We are there to learn the material not the names of people.
He is a great teacher.
This class was awesome and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good elective. Teacher was open to student feedback when there were issues. There were lots of fun lab experiences and he was always bringing us food. Learned useful skills and really enjoyed myself. I would take Br. Dewey again in a heartbeat!
Difficult for a 100 level elective class. Hard tests (a lot of information) but good review and straight from notes. Only Midterm and Final. Most of class did well. Fun labs and he brought food for class more than once.
I highly recommend Brother Dewey. He treats his students very well and cares about your learning. He makes class fun and has a lot of labs and unique days. Only 2 tests, but there are other things that make up your grade so don't stress. Study and memorize everything for those 2 tests, though, and you'll be fine. I learned a ton about gardening!
He is a great teacher. I learned a lot. He is tough on his tests but not unreasonable. He is willing to work with you if your are struggling.
I really enjoy him for Environmental stewardship. He understands that learning may take time and he was willing to put aside curriculum to make sure we were learning what was being taught.
Brother Dewey was a blast. I have learned so much more in his class than I ever had in any other class. He teaches the material in a way that keeps you entertained, and teaches you so much more that has nothing to do with the course. People who don't like his class or him are just upset because he is a tough grader on tests. Especially with grammar
Seriously you want to go to class everyday! There is always something good going on.. the lectures are a bit long when there is one, but for the most part you get to do fun things. One of the best classes and no one knows its that good!
Great elective class! You're able to keep your own garden and learn a lot. Brother Dewey actually remembers names and there was so much food and it was SO GOOD. This class should really be called Redneck 101. ;) Seriously though great class.
You do have to study for the exams because he expects you to actually now the material from the lectures. I felt like there were more labs than lectures though. You do a ton of hands on stuff to actually learn about self-reliance and survival. Very valuable information and Brother Dewey makes it really fun. Also, you will never be fed so much :)
it is a fun class. we have field trips arrowed campus. it is lots of fun you should tack it!!
He is a great teacher, his lectures are fun and he doesn't mind going off topic to answer a question. There are lots of field trips and food. The tests are hard, and beware, he docks for grammar mistakes. I recommend you take this class from him because and he cares about his students and the material. Just be ready for some memorization.
Want to learn Home Gardening hands-on? This is your guy. He knows his stuff and won't waste your time. I rated him 2 on easiness because yes, he does make you work for it. But learning takes effort. Only two tests but they require you to know the material and he marks down for grammar. Name quiz really brought the class together. Great idea!
He teaches us the info that we need to know to succeed: how to grow our own gardens, correct way to plant to our needs, prune, harvest, can foods, make jam, freeze foods, etc. Also provided hands on experience for everything! We canned tomatoes, pickles, applesauce, apple pie filling, and more!
I want to clarify this was a foundations course that was treated like a 400 level class. The tests took about 4 hours on average, the lectures were so long and so dry. Brother Dewey obviously didn't care about the course or about teaching it, there was no fun in the class. I hated every minute of it, I am glad that it is over, never will take again
I took Home Gardening with Brother Dewey this semester. He says this is his easiest and most fun class that he teaches. This class was awesome! We got to grow our own gardens (but we planted in October, and even with greenhouses, we only had lettuce). There is always food, fun labs, and informative lectures. He'll answer any question you ask!
Dewey is a phenomenal teacher. He has a PhD but he doesn't act like other teachers with doctorates. He is always willing to answer questions. You get to choose a lot of what you learn through your participation in class. He's awesome! I would take him again for any of his other classes, regardless of topic.
Brother Dewey is my favorite! His class was so fun, he made the 2 hours go so fast, and he always surprises you with food! He is super chill, and acts like a normal person.
Hands down one of the best classes on campus. The course is great, but I think bro. Dewey makes the course better. He only has two tests. He doesn't take attendance, but make sure you know the stuff and attend the labs. On the third or fourth day of class he will make you take a quiz and you have to know every students name in the class.
This is one of the best classes I have taken at university. The information is incredible and Brother Dewey has experience (stories) about most everything. He frequently brings food to class, and he likes taking the students on field trips. All in all, the class is fun, but also genuinely informative. I learned a tremendous amount.
I loved this class. Great balance between traditional lecture and experiential education. You have to study and do your part, but the dividends are more than worth it.
Test will take you several hours. Papers are impossible. BUT he will help you pass. If you are unsure about anything at all- just talk to him.
The tests are tough. The papers are challenging. He is a grammar NATZI. BUT he will help you pass. If you need anything at all, questions, confusion, struggling, he will help you. You just need to put in the effort to go talk to him.
Brother Dewey's class can be tough, but the best way to pass is to do all of your work, go to the writing center, do not procrastinate, do not whine or he'll add things, talk to him if you have questions, and do not miss class. He may be a tough teacher, but you learn a lot from his class. He's all about professionalism.
Brother Dewey is expects you to learn and prove that you learned the material in his class. His tests are long and in depth but as long as you went to class and studied you will do fine. He is also available and very willing to spend time with you explaining any questions you may have.
This was Brother Dewey's first time teaching this class so it was a little disorganized. First thing every class he will show you the course calendar and lay out the next few weeks so it is clear what is due and the topics you will cover. He is also willing to talk in his office or after class if you have any questions.
This class seemed to go by really quickly. We only met twice a week (one day lectureone day lab). There are only two tests. This was the teacher's first time teaching this class but I'm sure it will get better. I learned a lot and he is always there to answer all of your questions. Pruning trees was not fun in the snow.
This class was really hard. There were a lot of reports, reading, two major tests, and a huge paper. Over all though, this is a must-take class for HORT majors and there is no better teacher for this class. If you want to make sure you learn something, take a Brother Dewey class!
Take Brother Dewey's classes if you have the chance. You will learn. You will laugh. He wants you to have a good learning experience, and he will go out of his way to help. He teaches with the pace of the class. He cares about his students.
Great teacher who cares about his students and wants you to succeed. But, you will work hard for a good grade!
Overall fantastic person. He's hella smart. His tests are hard and his 8 page paper takes a lot of work as well. He is the only one who teaches it, good luck. And may the force be with you.
Brother Dewey is a good guy who has answers for everything. Classes are pretty relaxed, but his assignments are tricky. His emphasis on proper grammar and punctuation can turn a A paper into a B. He refuses to use iLearn which makes it rather difficult to know what is coming up for class and homework. Don't know if i would take him again..
Brother Dewey is a great teacher that expects a lot from his students. Be sure to read instructions carefully because he does not budge. There is a required paper. Take it seriously and turn it in early for review. This is not an easy class but it is well worth it.
Dewey is tough but he cares about the students. It's obvious that he is here to make you learn. He is efficient in his lectures. Everything shared in class will be on the exam. He is very strict with grammar but he also tells you exactly what he will be looking for. I'd recommend taking him at least once.
He is a good clear teacher and the material is fascinating. better hope you have a good memory for his tests though.
The Tests are tough but I actually felt like they were purposeful. The material sticks with you because your responsible for your notes, work and overall success. I thought this class was awesome and Brother Dewey made it great.
Brother Dewey's lectures were useful and not a waste of time. His labs were helpful and applied to what we were learning. His tests were not as hard as everyone says they were going to be. However, his grading of the Formal Lab Report was outrageous and did not reflect the quality of the paper. Be prepared to bend-over-backwards to receive an "A."
He doesn't do more than 2 tests in a semester so you need to really know your stuff. He gives you all the information you need to know you just need to be able to explain it.
Very willing to help and answer whatever questions you might have. It isn't the easiest course I have taken but that is also due to the nature of the material. As long as you take good notes and participate you should be fine. If you are not the best at writing papers make good friends with someone that is good at correcting grammar.
He is a great teacher, you will learn a lot. But make sure if you have a paper in his class turn it in before its due to get help with corrections.
Dewey is all around a great professor. He is super chill and friendly with students, which makes the students want to learn. You get a lot of hands on stuff with him which is fun and helpful. Although he is very down to earth and cool with the students, his grading is very difficult. If you take Dewey, you can expect to have fun but also work hard
The semester I took this class from Brother Dewey it was his first time teaching it so it was a really relaxed class. I anticipate that in the future it will be more difficult, but I still learned a lot and enjoyed the subject material.
I have found this class to be very beneficial. Professor Dewey is well versed and very knowledgeable in this subject and is easy to work with. The class was more of a relief than the usual class because he is pretty laid back and easy going. He does expect you to work for your grade which helps you learn the most. I highly recommend Prof. Dewey.
There was a lot of group work in this class but amazingly that was where I did best grade-wise. Brother Dewey is a great guy and he makes his class time fun, but as soon as I left the class and it got down to assignments it was a different story- kind of blah. He has hard tests that are time consuming and mainly essays which isn't fun.
Brother Dewey is awesome. He makes you work for your grade, because nothing in life is just given to you. He compares things to the real world. He is hilarious, and tough at the same time. I would take one of his classes again.
Brother Dewey is a tough grader. He expects you to be a serious college student. You have to study and work hard. His tests are long but I would rather only have the midterm and final anyway. I have had several classes with him and it is really nice that he will know who you are. He is a grammar Nazi but if you need help all you have to do is ask.
I feel like he is a professor that will do anything to answer your questions and help you learn the material. He doesn't explain things he doesn't know and if you ask then he will research or figure it out. Is a lot of work but one of the best Horticulture teachers.
Garden boxes were fun, beware the snow, but he grades nicely. He is super nice and he remembers EVERYONE'S name.
Dewey is very helpful. If you have any questions, ask! He will give you any information you need, and will clarify anything if you ask. His tests are very long and you need to know the information very well. He will dock you for grammar mistakes on anything you write for him, so make sure you get it checked by someone good!
Dewey is very knowledgeable! Ask him if you have questions about your gardens. Because the semesters are shorter, you have to plant your gardens with less knowledge than you want. If you ask him questions though, he will answer them for you!
I love Brother Dewey! He definitely knows his stuff in this class; very smart guy. He makes it interesting, and if you ask a question he will answer above and beyond every time. He is funny, but you have to do work. He assigns one paper, and it is extremely wise to take it to him 2 weeks early for grammar check. HE IS HARD CORE. Hard tests. Study.
All of his classes are structured the same way which makes it easy for planning purposes. Once you have taken one class of his you know what to expect.
Brother Dewey is a real college professor. He expects you to work and put in the effort but you learn a lot. If you pay attention in class and study, you will do fine. Dewey will always help if you ask.
Excellent teacher but really challenges you. You will learn a ton, but it will be a tough class. Painful, but worth it. Luckily he is good at answering any questions you might have.
He really cares about his students' success and will challenge you with his courses and material. If you ask questions he will always send you in the right direction. His classes are fun and rewarding. Excellent professor - has the heart of a teacher.
Dewey is a great teacher who has a lot of knowledge about horticulture. This class was a lot of fun! I wish he would have gave us more specific and helpful instructions on how to plant and care for a garden. He just expected us to look it up and figure it out ourselves. The tests are long and all essay questions, which he also graded hard.
Great teacher (and funny)! He holds students to high standards. There are only two tests: midterm and final. He teaches very detailed information so be prepared to be thorough and specific on tests. Expect to do some of your own research in learning how to plant square-foot gardens. Enjoy the benefits of everyone's gardens at Harvest dinner! Yum!
Attendance is not mandatory, but you receive grades for labs. He gives you a lot of information, but sometimes forgets to explain unless you ask for clarification. The class doesn't seem hard until you get the tests. Tests are very difficult, study every detail of your notes! He will work with your schedule to be available for students.
Really enjoyed this class. A lot of information gets covered in a short period of time. No textbook, but you do need to take good notes in class for the tests. This class does not have a lot of assignments, and the few assignments this class does have will either make or break your grade, so keep that in mind.
There are not many assignments so you better get a good grade on all of them. Tests are incredibly hard so study a lot. This teacher rocks his class might be hard but it is worth it.
Home Gardening was really fun, but get ready for a lot of studying for tests. The tests are in essay format, and take SEVERAL hours (the last one took me 4 hrs, and I know a girl who had to spend 9 hrs on it). Good thing there are only a mid-term and a final. The labs are fun, and you get to eat good food. Brother Dewey is such a nice guy.
Had two exams. All short answer and essay questions. One term paper. Got our own box gardens to grow in during the semester. Graded on efficient use of space. He was helpful when I needed any questions answered.
This class has been a great class! Brother Dewey is a great teacher. Very clear in his lectures and is clear on what he is teaching. You can expect Mondays to be lecture, and Wednesdays to be lab. Labs consist of canning. If you know how to can probably don't need to take the class. Is nice that you get to plant a garden though! Learned lots though
He is a great teacher, but is very serious about making you work for your grade.
Very good class to take if you have any interest in plants, at ALL. Bro Dewey is a clear, thorough teacher, pretty basic. He is approachable and makes plenty of time for his students. Class is set up for you to succeed. Its not hard as long as you participate in labs and class and take care of your gardens. Tests are long but there are only 2.
This is the easiest I feel of the Dewey classes. The tests require that you know a lot of knowledge, but the information is far less complicated to understand. He's easy to work with, fun, but does expect you to think for yourself and work hard. But for some reason, I don't mind working hard in his classes, because they are interesting.
Typical of a Dewey class the lecture time is used effectively, I learned a ton, expectations were clear, labs were useful and educational, and I came out of the class with changed perspectives.
Brother Dewey is great. He explains things well, and if you don't understand, he'll work with you on it. He is flexible and friendly, and even though his classes are hard, he will never make you feel stupid for not understanding. He's also funny.
Brother Dewey is a great person. But, I would not recommend this to anyone looking for an easy class. This is by far one of the hardest classes I have ever had to take. If you work really hard and study long hours, you could get an A or B. But if you just do the bare minimum, it would be nearly impossible to get above a C.
Brother Dewey is very knowledgable and helped me to understand more about gardening. He is fair in his grading and expectations in the class. Do what you are supposed to do in the class and you will do fine. The labs are helpful but there is waiting around because of the size of the class. It is totally worth taking this class!
Brother Dewey is a good teacher. He is willing to take a few minutes and answer questions in his office. He knows his stuff.
Bro. Dewey is a hard but you actually learn something. Will answer any question and will help you with anything; you just have to ask. Tests are hard but as long as you study for them you should be just fine. I really enjoy his classes you just have to stay on top of your studies.
He is a great teacher! Plan on working hard and you will enjoy the class.
Tests are tough, but he is a great teacher and will help you with whatever you need.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher! He expects a lot from his students but he is always willing to help. PS- You eat a lot of food in his classes :)
Fun to have your own garden, but the only plus. The class is always packed so labs take forever. He should be an advanced English professor, because he grades like one. You may have content spot on, but will get a much lower grade bc he is more concerned with spelling and grammar. I was so excited for this class, but it was really frustrating.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher. He truly believes in what he teaches and lives his life by it. That being said, he doesn't have the best outline as how the class is ran. Our grades were always entered weeks later after the due date, and i think he could have done a better job on explaining certain things. But this was the best class i ever took.
You'll get out what you put in with this class. If you show up, participate, work, and ask questions you'll do fine. When you get to the math for gpm's, psi's, irrigation schedules, etc. and you don't get it the first time, just ask him to do it again. He's always willing to spend more time clarifying whatever the students ask for.
One of the best professors in the Applied Plant Science department. This is his fun/easy class to teach, and so it is not as intense as his other classes. He does a lot for the class as far as prep and providing materials for labs that he really doesn't have to but chooses to in order to make the learning experience that much better.
He has a monster term paper and it's almost impossible to get a good grade on it. He expects you to do a lot of work and figure things out on your own. If you miss class, you'll regret it. Definitely not an easy A.
Fun teacher. Does make you work for the grade but it is doable. I personally would take any class taught by Dewey. By far my favorite on campus.
Loved this class. I learned a lot about how to grow a garden and use the produce harvested. You get to eat in this class so that's always a plus!
Nice guy, terrible teacher. Not very organized. He tells you one thing, ruins your grade on an assignment for doing what he says and then changes his mind later. Might be a better teacher if he put half as much effort into providing a good, well-structured class as he does his silly deer hunting he is always talking about like every class.
I personally would not recommend Brother Dewey as a teacher. He tries to be funny, but he has made numerous comments in class which I find immature and offensive. I also did not find that his class follows the BYU-I learning model in which there is a spiritual learning environment. It is the least inspiring class I have taken.
Brother Dewey is awesome. His classes are hard and you definitely have to study and pay attention but as long as you are doing the work and studying the material then you can pass the class. Brother Dewey is nice, funny, and if you need help he is always there for you. One of my favorite teachers in the horticulture department.
He is a tough grader, and he really makes you work to earn a good grade. He does what he does though to try to force us to be better and to work harder.
He's a really good teacher
He is a difficult teacher but he doesn't throw curve-balls. He teaches exactly what he wants you to know.
Fun class! Come to class ready to take notes, his lectures are PowerPoint but take notes when he writes on the board. Group studies are very helpful especially for exams. Attend and do all of your lab projects, simple and fun to do. Teacher is willing to help you out, don't hesitate to ask for help. Lots of hands-on experience. Awesome class!
Only take 12 credits this semester! This class requires an ungodly amount of work! Understand, there are only 2 tests and 4 papers, but the tests take most students 5 hours (no bull, for reals), and 3 of the papers are only 250 words, but the 4th is 2,000 words. It's a mandatory class for Horticulture majors, so good luck!
Tests are a good mix of hard and easy questions. Lectures are well organized. Lots of hands on experiences in this class. Very willing to give extra help for studying before a test. Very knowledgeable of subject matter. Overall great professor.
Great class, great teacher, hard tests, make sure to study
Brother Dewey expects the best from his students because he knows you can do it. While I found the tests difficult, they required me to think differently and really work for my grade. I learned more from his tests than any class I've ever taken. His lectures and labs are awesome. Also, don't skip class. You need to go to understand the information.
He is an amazing teacher. He is honest and will help you in anyway that he can. His tests can be hard, but you just need to show up to class and to ask questions when you do not understand. He gets you ready for the real world.
This is not an easy class. Great teacher who will take time for you and answer any questions you have. I enjoyed the labs and learned a lot. There is one big formal lab report, but you have an opportunity to turn it in early to have it pre-corrected and resubmit it. I recommend this class.
Great teacher! Very helpful if you just ask. He has great experience and knows his stuff! Class is super easy if you go and pay attention. Labs are important and provide key knowledge.
Dewey is tough but will help you if you go to him. He does except you to act like an adult.
Brother Dewey is a really nice guy. He is a tough teacher because he knows how valuable college is and he teaches according to how a college course should be taught. He is always willing to answer questions and clarify anything for you. His test are hard. You have a paper and he is a super tough grader when it comes to grammar. Proof read a lot!!!
Loved the subject and he taught it very well. It is obvious he knows a lot about the subject. Expects students to work hard.
Test really test your knowledge. Need to study but only asks questions that you go over in class. I really enjoyed this class.
It was a very helpful class, I enjoy that when he doesn't know the answer he takes the time to learn with the class as well.
Brother Dewey's' classes are intense, you need to stay actively engaged with all labs, papers, assignments. He is very helpful when you are lagging behind, just talk to him. Ask a lot of questions in class, he respects students who are trying to learn. If you need help after class, he is always willing to be there for you.
He's the bomb. Difficult, but you actually learn something. Heaven forbid.
He will bend over backward for you. A very good man, but makes it tough because he does care.
Brother Dewey does a really good job at teaching. His classes, especially his tests, are tough. Even though the classes are tough he will go out of his way to help you with whatever you need. Don't put homework off until the last minute becasue you will go crazy.
Brother Dewey teaches tough classes because that is what is realistic. He helps you with anything you need and is a fair teacher.
I like that he gives really clear criteria so you know how to get the grade you want. He does grade pretty strictly on grammar on lab reports which some complain about. But honestly, it college, we should know how to write well. He is very fair and more than willing to adjust things. He is more than willing to help outside class. Probs my fav evr.
Brother Dewey is always striving to improve. He has high standards of the students but he will always try to take suggestions that will still allow him to challenge us.
Good teacher. He is tougher, but he is fair.
His classes are tough but he is a great teacher and will help you through it!
Don't go into this class expecting it to be easy. He teaches like all college teachers should. no busy work. You will have lab write ups, a large essay style mid term & final & one large scientific journal style paper that will take research, in class experimentation & a lot of time. This is seriously an awesome and bro dewey is a joy to learn from
Brother Dewey is brilliant. You will not find a smarter teacher at this school or one who cares more about you. The class is hard, but if you put in the effort it is extremely doable. If you have questions just ask him. He explains things extremely well. By far my favorite professor at BYUI.
Prof. Dewey wants everyone to know everyone's names. It might seem like a lot to devote to something non-academic, but roll with it because it's smart. Class is interesting and he entertains questions. Don't be mistaken into thinking the course is easy. You will pass the first test easy if you took bio 101 within the last year and passed with an A.
Brother Dewey has his way of testing and he's sticking to it. He goes over the notes and will help you with the type of questions you'll have. In this class Arboriculture you have some labs that he gives you plenty of time to complete you just need to complete it.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher. He connects with his students and will always help you if you ask. There are lots of group projects/experiments. Expect them every Friday. Tests are take home, which is awesome! If you're having trouble, because it can be a difficult class, see his TA or form a study group.
This class was definitely challenging, but it was also the epitome of why I started studying horticulture. Besides a few lab write-ups and one major lab report, there really wasn't any homework, which was super nice. However, my best advice would be to review the lecture material regularly instead of trying to cram for the midterm and final.
Your mom goes to college
Brother Dewey is Old school. Grammar matters and his tests are beasts!!! You will learn if you put forth effort. He will sit down with you anytime to help understand a concept. It's a fun class just be prepared to study and write one good paper. You will enjoy the class if you care at all. If I can pass it so can you!
If you're taking the production block, make sure you make time to study for this class.
He does not require you to buy or use a textbook. But the class is full of information. You will want to attend every lecture.
Great class with lots of material. All aspects as far as grading are given upfront with nothing to hide. Would recommend.
Very forward, expects you to keep up. He is fluid in the schedule, but goes by instinct. It is his way or you don't pass. He is a stickler for grammar and spelling
Requires you to work, tests are long and tough but you know what you need to know if you work at it. He knows his stuff and is fun to learn from. He doesn't believe in buying a text book you don't read.
No textbook is required. The labs are fun.
He's a good teacher, but his tests are very time consuming.
Seriously one of the best classes I have ever taken! Although attendance is not required you need to come to class if he decides to do a lab that day. You eat delicious food in this class! If you don't like dirt don't take it because you do get your own garden! Absolutely worth it! Study for the exams though because they are hard. No homework!
Brother Dewey is a great professor who really knows his stuff. Home Gardening is a fun and great class but the tests are brutal. My advice is to ask as many questions as possible before you start your garden so that it gets off to a good start. The garden instructions were not the greatest when we started and as a result, gardens suffered.
He is a really good professor, who really does care for his students. He is very fair, and is pretty lenient. Ask him a question and he will answer it. This was a great class and I really enjoyed it. Hardly ever any dull moments. Very hands-on class, but a great learning experience.
He really cares about his students. The way he teaches is by far the best of any professor I have had. If you take good notes and study them you will not have any problems in his class. (Tests are hard but not impossible)
The home gardening class normally only teaches how to use a box garden, but Bro. Dewey went above and beyond to help teach how to use a full size garden. Lots of work out side of class for the upkeep of our gardens, but we get to keep anything we produce! No text book needed! his tests are hard but as long as you are taking good notes you are ok.
If you skip class, you will miss everything. He doesn't have a heavy homework load for this class but he is a very difficult grader when it comes to writing papers. He knows a lot and is willing to answer all of your questions. He's a great teacher, but you do need to put in some serious effort for this class.
Home gardening is a really fun class. There is quite a lot of work that needs to get put in outside of class. You will have your own garden that you will need to take care of and it will be graded at the end of the semester. There are lots of super fun labs. It's a pretty easy class, but be sure to stay updated on what you are doing.
Test are all essay so you need to know what he has sought in all lectures. Teaches very well and is happy to tech you as much as you want to know. He really wants you to learn and he gives his best effort to make sure you learn it.
The lectures you really had to pay attention to. If you don't the test are very hard. Teacher helps you a lot and cares.
Bro. Dewey is a very smart man who is always willing to pause a lecture to answer questions and make sure the material is understood. He's more concerned with the student's learning than just getting through material. The class is based heavily upon a mid-term and final exam, but if you've taken good notes in class you shouldn't worry.
Great teacher but he does make sure you know what you are doing. Essays are hard, grades spelling and punctuation. Very knowledgeable. Probably my favorite professor.
Really cool class! He was more interested in us learning through labs than lectures, and the labs were pretty cool. No homework or busy work, but you gotta work for your grade on the midterm and final. Way cool about making time if you have questions. Awesome field trip too.
I loved Bro. Dewey and this class. Lectures were great, there were tons of cool examples, and labs were things I was excited to try. He was fair with every assignment, I definitely felt like I deserved the grade I got. A lot of people told me this was the hardest class, but if you're willing to put in the effort, you'll be fine.
Great guy who cares about his students. He knows everything you will need to know to pass the class. His tests are very tough so study lots. Is willing to laugh and have fun during class. All work was VERY hands on which is much better than learning on paper.
I didn't know what to expect going into this class, and I was very pleased!! Bro Dewey was awesome, helpful, and excited about what he taught. I learned a lot from him and Spackman, and it has been one of my favorite classes I have taken at BYUI. One thing is that the tests are hard, and that you should ask questions about planting your garden.
Brother Dewey is an amazing professor. I have learned so much in the 3 classes I have taken from him. The only downside is that his tests are some of the hardest I have ever taken, but he is kind and cares about his students.
He is a great teacher and guy. You will learn a lot in class. His test are pretty hard and he gives a really big essay as well. Other then that it was a super fun class!
Brother Dewey's Plant Breeding and Genetics class was tough! He's a great teacher and knows his stuff. We mostly did hands on labs (which was great) and didn't have very many assignments. Be prepared for tough grading on all assignments. The Midterm and Final are take home, but difficult because of all the detail that is needed for full credit.
This Gardening class was a lot of fun. Brother Dewey and Brother Spackman are really fun. Both have a sense of humor so that always makes a class easier. It was a long walk to the garden but I think they are changing it next semester so it won't be as long. Hard tests though so make sure you study well and both are willing to help if needed.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher. His lectures cover a lot of material, but he always ties it into real life so that you can see the application and he will always take time to help you understand the material. I thought this class was very informative if you are interested in being a plant breeder.
He is a good professor who knows what he is talking about. His courses are lecture and note heavy. The exams are always INTENSE! Don't forget anything mentioned in lecture. It will end up on his exams.
Professor Dewey is a great teacher. I have had him in other classes and while they were difficult, I learned a lot and really enjoyed them. This class was awful and Professor Dewey just didn't seem to care about the class. He canceled class often and took a very long time to grade anything. He also regularly changed his mind about assignments.
Brother Dewey is one of my favorite teachers. His classes are not easy. He cares about each student and will do whatever it takes to help you learn the material. He has a great sense of humor, and the class is fun. He provides PowerPoint presentations that go along with his lectures, and you must take good notes to succeed.
Like all Dewey classes they are hard. We learn a lot and have fun doing it. Always worth it to take his classes. One paper, a few labs, a field trip, and lots of lectures. Tests are all about what you know. You can do it!
Great teacher but be ready to really really work for your grades.
Dewey has clear standards of what is expected. He will keep his commitments to the class. He has a long paper each semester which must be grammatically accurate. His tests are take home closed notes and generally quite long. You are expected to learn the material. He is sometimes very funny and will laugh with the class.
great teacher, makes us work for our grade but you learn a lot, we do fun labs and experiments, is very willing to help outside of class if things don't make sense, class is always fun to be in and the field trips are awesome, make sure to take real good notes
Brother Dewey is my favorite teacher so far here at BYUI. He is not easy! You have to pay attention, participate and study to pass this class. He is a really fun guy! And he really knows what he is talking about! He is not one of those teachers who thinks he knows everything, but doesn't. He is very smart, and knows how to teach it.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher. His lectures are easy to follow and very accessible for students outside of class. Although his classes are built mostly on the tests, there are ways to get extra credit and turn in papers early for him to edit and review, which helps grades. The tests are very similar to the class notes as well.
I loved his class! It's not easy because he wants you to have a really solid understanding of the material. The tests are not a walk in the park, but if you study really hard, you can get an A. He brings a lot of food to class, mostly animal meat he hunted himself, like elk burgers and jerky (dang good).
Brother Dewey is great! You learn a lot in his class, therefore, it's probably best to be at all his classes. His tests are based on literally everything he lectures about and teaches you, so you might want to pay attention. If you're looking for a easy A, this is not the class. He's understanding and will help you out whenever, and he's hilarious!
You have to show up to class otherwise you will not understand the notes.
Great guy, you will learn a lot good good things in class. Labs are mandatory, class is not. However, you will fall behind if you don't go. No homework, just a lot of memorizing for the tests. Fill in the blanket tests though each test is 200+ questions long... You'll have 3 or 4 tests like it.
Brother Dewey is a really good professor but he does do A LOT of lectures! You need to memorize everything he talks about in class (there are Power Points that he provides). He is really good at clarifying and talking things through. Over all he is a good teacher but if you aren't willing to put in the effort, don't take this course.
Professor Dewey is a really great professor! He expects a lot from you. But, he is willing to help, and he cares about his students and getting to know them as individuals. There is no homework and few assignments throughout the course. Sound easy? It is not. You have to know EVERYTHING that is covered in lecture as that is the test.
Bro Dewey's class was defiantly worth it. If you want an easy A then find another teacher. If you want to know exactly what you're talking about then do take his class. He doesn't do homework, only collecting data from your experiments and short papers explaining them (Watch your grammar! He'll dock you!). Chill class, brings food if you ask.
Brother Dewey is a professors who understands how to teach. He understand the topic very well and will not move on until your question is answered. The class does not have a lot of homework but a mid-term and final along with a 2000 word paper. These are the main points in the class. Everything on the test is covered in class. Expect to learn.
As long as you show up for the lectures and take good notes and study those notes thuroughly you will be fine. Also you must know how to write a well written paper.
He has a wonderful class and brings good energy in the room. Try not to miss class because you can miss a lot of information and can get behind. He posts his powerpoints on I-learn but they are not very detailed. Overall I learned a lot from his class and would definately recommend him. He is good at woking with his students if they get behind.
Bro Dewey was a great teacher. If i have the opportunity i would take another class from him for sure. He does a great job at providing you with the information you need to pass the class, and helping you and the rest of the class out if there is confusion. I highly recommend taking his class.
When you go to class with Brother Dewey he will give you a good group of topics to learn.T here are real good sections that pertain to real life studies. There are parts where he dips into the heavy chemistry part of things, he will give a chance to review. Make sure to ask questions he will review ask about it for the test all the details.
Brother Dewey is a good teacher. He is patient and goes at the pace the students need. He takes time to answer questions, and is willing to work with you outside of class. He gives opportunities for hands on learning. Grammar and spelling are very important to him. The tests do take a while, and you need to know your stuff.
Turfgrass Management is a great class. Bro. Dewey is a great teacher that holds you to a high standard. He really pushes you to be better and to complete quality work. You really have to work hard to succeed in this class.
Great teacher. Everything that is covered in class is on the test. Don't skip class. He will answer any questions you have in class. I would recommend studying everything that you get from the lectures because it will all be on the tests.
Great teacher hard test
Dewey doesn't take attendance but all the information for his tests are discussed in class. You probably wont pass if you don't show up. Dewey makes sure you understand the material and will answer questions all class long. He is less concerned about how much material he covers and more concerned with how well you understand it.
Great teacher. Most of grade comes from tests. Tests are take home, but you're not aloud to use notes... tests are difficult and long.
Your grade mainly depends on the tests, so study your notes to memorization, I recommend making a small study group, it helped me a ton. Bro. Dewey will answer any questions, so don't be afraid to have him clarify something you don't understand. Take time to study for the tests and do your labs and you'll easily pass.
Tests are hard, so take notes like crazy, and study extremely well. Don't miss any classes or labs (cant make-up). He may seem intimidating but he not, he will help you if you ask for it.
He is very hard on his grammar grading.
I thought that it was a good class there wasn't useless class work but the tests were excessive especially for a 100 level class kind of ridiculous but besides that good
Brother Dewey is an awesome professor and is willing to do anything to help you out! He has been one of my favorite professors I have ever had. I won't lie though his tests are hard as heck! Very different style! I wouldn't let that stop you from taking his class though! Great Professor in my opinion!
He's a great teacher and makes class interesting! Honestly, if you go to class, you will pass. Take notes and study and you'll do great. GO TO CLASS. He doesn't require attendance but man it's extremely hard if you don't go.
Brother Dewey is an excellent teacher who cares that you understand the material being covered. Everyday at the start of class, he opens it up for questions. However, his tests are long and difficult but if you attend class everyday (all the material covered in lecture is on the test) and you study your notes well, you'll do fine on the tests.
This was a very difficult class, mainly just for the tests. A real fun and great teacher. Tough love with him. He expects college level work.
He is Dewey just figure out how he does things and you will be good.
His tests taking some time.
Pretty good Class. Definately didn't like the way he tests. Go to class. It makes life alot easier. Be prepared to study a ton. Especially for test. Know your matieral and have good study habits for this class. Other than that he did good. It was a good course.
If you are good in a lecture type environment and you easily remember every detail of the slides presented and the lectures (and I mean EVERY detail), then you will do fine in the class. He is awesome at lecturing and explaining so that everything is clear. He is good with questions. He knows everyone's name by the third class. Very very test heavy
This is a good class and Bro. Dewey is a good man. The course is all lecture and test with a few labs. Everything in lecture is on the test. Tests are really hard, but once you figure out how he thinks and how he words the tests you'll be fine. I would recommend this class if you are interested in plant science.
He tries to be very fair as far as student time is concerned- he doesn't make you put in more time than you signed up for. He also always ends class on time. The lectures are what the tests are based off of, so it is extremely important to know ALL of the information on the lecture slides and what he goes over in class.
Brother Dewey requires a lot of studying but teaches a lot of good information.
Good teacher. Makes you learn.
Professor Dewey is a fantastic teacher. He clearly, but quickly teaches difficult concepts. Because of the difficulty he is available outside of class and is willing to help answer your questions. He also posts his lectures on I-learn for you to reference after lectures. Great teacher!
Great teacher and gets the content and information to students in a clear and simple way. But his tests are some of the hardest I have ever taken.
Professor Dewey's plant sci, is one of the greats! he gives no homework, however he makes up for it on the test. his tests are hard, he makes you work for your good grade. as long as you study what you covered in lecture you should be great! be prepared he will actually treat you and expect you to act/do work/be prepared like a college student.
Content is super interesting (I'm an art major and I enjoyed it) and Brother Dewey makes the lectures fun and exciting. Because there's no textbook, if you skip lecture, you're pretty much screwed. Labs are fun, but he's not the most organized when it comes to deadlines, everything is subject to change. Tests will kick your butt if you don't study.
I actually really like Brother Dewey. He's a nice guy, but he doesn't put up with bs. He's willing to explain things if you don't get it right away. Really personable. Memorizes names super fast and that was super nice. It made me feel like I was actually important to him. His tests are tough, not a lot of homework at all. I enjoyed this class alot
All of the tests are based on his lectures. There are no study guides for tests so taking good notes is highly recommended. He is very strict about grammar in essay assignments, he allows you to turn the paper in early to get it checked over by him and then is handed back for you to fix the mistakes without punishment. Take advantage of that.
I really enjoyed the class. Brother Dewey really takes the time to get to know you. When it comes to taking any of his classes, just be prepared to work, after all, this is college. He does really well with making sure you understand things and will not move faster than you let him.
Honestly he grades papers like he is a PhD English professor and his tests take 10-20 pages of essay responses. It's a super difficult class, but if you really take time on the tests and essay, then you will pass. The rest of the stuff is just participation points. The experiments were cool, but his lectures are really fast paced.
Brother Dewey really knows his stuff and he really wants you to learn. His lectures are based off of his PowerPoints, but they aren't in detail, so make sure you take really good notes. He'll never ask you a question on a test that wasn't discussed in class, so showing up is really important. He can be laid back but doesn't waste any time.
Wants to prepare you for success in graduate school and in the work force. His lectures are enjoyable but you need to attend class because the exams are heavily based on the lectures.
I loved learning from Brother Dewey. I thought the classes were going to be really hard but they turned out to be a lot of fun with little homework. Pay attention to when he is speaking and don't space out, you'll probably miss something important if you do. Definitely take a class from Dewey, you wont regret it.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher, he is very knowledgeable and is fun to learn from. As long as you pay attention in class and study some outside of class, you'll be fine.
Arboriculture is a must. Taking a class from Dewey is a must. Dewey keeps you on your toes and you have to pay attention. Take good notes. Dewey will reward you with food if you do well.
You can't always avoid his classes since some are required (depending on your emphasis) & he's the only one who teaches those courses (besides Home Gardeningtake Reese Nelson for that one). You can learn a lot, but the only grades are for the midterm, final, term paper, lab participation, and semester project. Ace all of these and you'll be fine!
Brother Dewey is a great teacher. Make sure you attend class and take good notes, and never miss labs.
Get ready to write!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you love the subject the lecture is interesting. I did more interesting and accurate lab experiments in high school. I did not feel like they added to my educational experience. Every teacher has a thing- his thing is grammar. Don't complain, just make sure you do it right and use the resources he gives you. Make sure you do well on the paper.
He will stick with what he says. Study for the tests and don't put off the papers. He is very funny but has a unique style of teaching some love and some don't.
Brother Dewey is a great teacher that teaches great lectures and makes sure that his students have a chance to ask any questions that they might have.
He is willing to help you if you put in the effort. He does push grammar, but that is an important life skill. If you perform well, he will bring food. Study and work hard
Be ready to work hard. Great informational lectures. Makes learning fun. Food brought a lot. All in all great class, besides the paper.
Brother Dewey is a nice enough guy, and surprisingly knows his stuff. The benefit to taking his classes is that you don't have to have a textbook. He's definitely all for making exams essay questions, so prepare to write a lot.
I loved Brother Dewey's lectures. They were very enjoyable, he gave opportunities to ask questions, and I learned a TON. The midterm and final definitely required study, but were doable. There was a paper between them as well, but he gave opportunities to have it pre-corrected. DO IT! Overall, a great class.
Brother Dewey is a tough grader. However, the real thing that is frustrating is that he is hard to talk to and often explains complicated things too quickly for a lot of people to follow. You will learn a lot if you can follow his lecturing. Be prepared to write plenty.
The best horticulture teacher
Honestly one of my least favorite professors here. Very disrespectful and doesn't care about the students. You do a lot of work and learn little. He's a nice enough guy I suppose. I just want to give fair warning to my fellow students that he is NOT a good professor. At all.
Brother Dewey is a great professor! His labs are engaging and you learn quite a bit in lecture. If you consistantly miss class-- don't take him. Your notes from class are your study guide for the midterm and final. He requires a large formal lab report, so get started on it early and turn it in by his pre-corrected paper date and you'll do fine!
Dewey is a really great guy, I just hate how he teaches. He prides himself on being the toughest grader in the department, so be ready for that. His tests are incredibly difficult and entirely based on his lectures. Taking good notes is a must, and I even suggest recording his lectures. Take a different professor if you can. It's just not worth it.
Brother Dewey is a really great teacher! He knew all of our names before the class started. His lectures are also great! We went on two field trips: We went to Mesa Falls and we hiked Taylor Mountain. There are no assignments. The only grades for this class are the midterm, final, and a short essay.
Bro Dewey is amazing. What's great, is that he goes as fast as you let him. If you don't understand something he'll spend the entire day on one lecture slide. He has all his slides on ILearn but you have to be in class to really know what they are talking about. Tests are a strange format but if you study everything from your notes you will do well
This is a great class, I highly recommend Brother Dewey. This class is great, but don't take it if you're just looking for an easy elective. Almost no out of class homework besides working in your garden. Take good notes, almost everything you talk about in class will be on the mid-term and final.
I love him. He brought us food all the time. He really wants you to understand what he teaches so if you don't understand, ask questions. He will spend all class on one bullet point of a slide if you don't understand. So funny. Tests are hard, but he gives you everything you need to pass with an A. Study/memorize all your notes and you'll do great.
In this class, the only grades you get are on mid-terms and the final. He expects you to study hard and memorize what has been gone over in class. He lectures, but always accepts questions and does his best to answer them. There is no textbook and everything you go over in class is what is going to be on the test. Take this class, you study hard.
Loved his class! Super funny, cares about his students, and explains things very clearly. He doesnt require attendance, but there is no textbook so you will not pass if you dont go. He also would bring in food for us sometimes! Definitely would take a class from him again.
Danial Dewey is a good dude. Good humor, I would like to hunt with him. His teaching style is geared for one kind of mind that can memorize. If your strength is memorizing 20 pages of notes, regurgitating verbatim that on a test. this is your guy. To quote him "none of you will remember this stuff, im just teaching you how to memorize" I disagree!
I love this teacher. I have taken almost every class that he offers. His classes are a lot of work, but you learn a lot. All his classes are formatted the same, so after taking one you have a pretty good idea of what he expects. Lots of memorizing. Attendace is not graded, but if you want to fully understand the material, go to class.
As far as his teaching goes, he is humorous and phenomenal, making complex topics understandable. However, I took his first remote class and the tests were near impossible. They were closed-note, there was no textbook to study, and were so poorly designed that they were harder to understand than his lectures. Half the class failed the first exam.
This teacher is knowledgable but is awful at teaching that knowledge to students- especially now that we are doing remote classes. You have to email him everything-doesn't give me great confidence in his ability to teach online. If something is wrong in the tests we have to let him know-like he's not sure what's going on. Very frustrating teacher.
Online his class is exclusively lectures. Which is problematic if you aren't an auditory or visual learner. There are 3 tests, two of which are "midterms" and one of which is a final. They are HARD. It feels genuinely impossible to pass at times. Supposedly there is a TA but there is no way to find them. I wanted to like that class so badly.
I've taken all of Brother Dewey's classes and I would say arboriculture is the easiest. Mostly because it is 2 credits instead of 3 - meaning 1 lecture class a week instead of 2 (half the material to memorize). Labs were pretty easy. Most of your points come from the mid term and final. Just memorize his lecture slides and you're good to go.
Brother Dewey is honestly one of my favorite professors. His exams can be tough if you don't pay attention in class. But he usually gives out extra credit in multiple ways. When grading exams you can explain your thought process to him and sometimes get more points doing that. He is a very caring guy and knows what he is teaching.
The material is fine. He only has a few assignments and so if you do poorly on one thing your grade drops dramatically. If you dont study every night then you wont pass the midterm and final. Hardest test I have ever taken. Class isnt mandatory but if you dont go you will struggle. First time I have gone to tutoring because of this class.
This is an entry-level class, but harder than any of my high-level classes. The material is not complicated but expects you to learn too much of it at once. He will not put in effort to help his students. Honestly a really good guy, but he does not care about his students succeeding. He barely puts in effort to teach.
Brother Dewey is a good guy, but a horrible teacher. The tests are centered around his lectures, no textbook, no homework. Do not expect him to help you learn the material. He will give you a 6 hr final on things he barely touches on in class. He will not help you out at all, he does not care about his students. He puts in the bare minimum effort.
I love Brother Dewey! He truly cares about his students. After class he stays and answers questions and I've never seen him bothered by it. As a visual learner, I appreciate that he draws examples as he teaches. It's all lecture but his personality keeps things fun. He expects you to study and know the material, but if you do you'll be golden!
I love Brother Dewey, he's amazing. He's willing to answer any of your questions and help you understand the material. This class is hard. I would make notes using his powerpoints and then add in additional notes during the lectures. Then make flashcards. Start studying early and expect the exams to be long. I learned a ton in this class.
I have never had a teacher whose teaching methods are so ridiculous and ineffective. Do not take any classes from this guy. He's more interested in personal convenience rather than being a good teacher. I really like the guy. He definitely knows his stuff, but he won't "teach."
I have taken 3 classes from him at this point and honestly each time I like him more as a teacher!! I think the biggest thing people have a problem with is how hard his tests are. But, as long as you listen in class, take notes, and study his power points, there is no reason why you would fail the tests. I 100% recommend a class from him
I took this class as a freshman due to an interest in horticulture and this seemed like a good introductory class to that field. Brother Dewey definitely isn't a bad teacher, but he only ever lectures you. He also loves making tests that are pretty hard and take at least 4 hours to do. I'm usually a fast test taker, and his tests took me 6 hours.
He was an amazing teacher but the class was fairly difficult but if you want a good understanding of the course material he is the best teacher.
Brother Dewey is a really good professor; he has a lot of knowledge! He is willing to answer any question that you have and will try to ensure that you understand what he is teaching. His tests are long and are a bit on the harder side but that's because he doesn't stress you out with a lot of assignments, he expects you to study! Great Professor!
Brother Dewey is by far my favorite professor. His lectures are applicable, don't need the textbook, and doesn't have busy work. Grades are based on the tests because they are some of the only assignments. He encourages networking with other students and because of that I've known someone in each of my classes since my first semester with him.
Professor Dewey is a knowledgeable teacher, but the class can be quite challenging. Attend lectures, take detailed notes, and use resources like unstuckstudy AI for study prep - it really helps. The exams are tough, but if you put in the work, you can do well.
Absolutely amazing professor! Goes through every lecture with enthusiasm and ease. A lot of time was spent out in the orchard rather than simply sitting in a classroom. He really cares for his students and their success!
Even as a morning class, I looked forward to every lecture! Dewey loves what he does and he does it well. The class spent so much time in a lab or the greenhouses as well, giving the class a good amount of diversity. The only tests are the midterm and final. These tests are extremely difficult and often take hours. Study as you go, do your best!
He made a 7:45 class worth it! This guy is hilarious and made me laugh even when I was exhausted. Tests are long, BUT don't let that deter you from taking him! As long as you study and attend class, they are easy. I wouldn't say attendance is mandatory, but there are a couple things he explains in person that make a difference for the exams.
Brother Dewey is the best! I took him for 490R (Native Plant Identification) and had a blast. He taught us so much, and took us to great locations to find the plants we learned about in class. He also made us elk burgers at the end of the semester, which was a bonus! Really down-to-earth, and passionate about what he teaches. He's a fun guy!
