Excellent at teaching both the concepts involved in the course and how to apply them to solve a problem. Says exactly what he's going to test the class on so no surprised exist on test day. Shows great respect for students and genuinely wants his students to succeed in his class and beyond.
Great professor. Genuinely wants you to succeed and will help you in any way he can. He can get a bit confused sometimes in lecture, and his test grading can be a bit strange, but overall a GREAT professor!
Rarely went to class but enjoyed it when I did. Tests were always what he said they would be and were not very hard. Offers a lot of extra credit throughout the semester and drops low hw grades. Easy to get an A if you put in the effort.
Best professor I've had so far at UF. Truly and sincerely cares about students and remembers you if you go to office hours and class. Tests are not tricky if you do the homework (and pay attention to what he hints at). Put in the effort-you'll earn it back.
Awesome professor, He really cares about his students and is genuine when giving advice on everyday life and future involvement in your career. You don't need to attend class but like it was said before I very much enjoyed the times I did
He is a viking-esque monster who will crush your desire to exist.
Super-easy class; Dickrell realizes this, so he doesn't go over material ad nauseam. Instead, free class time is used for career advice or exam review. Be careful - there are a total of ~9 problems that determine the majority of your grade in the class. However, Dr. Dickrell tells you what the specific exam problems will cover.
100% Best Professor I've had thus far at UF. He is captivating in his lectures bc he makes jokes and tells stories and also teaches in a very clear and concise manner. Even though attendance is optional it is SO worth it because he's nice to look at and also gives great life advice. If you have the chance, definitely take his class!
My favorite teacher at UF by far. He really knows how to keep the class interesting. He also gives some really awesome life lessons. The tests can be a bit difficult, but as long as you do the homework you should be fine. He is also very clear on what is going to be on the tests. I would recommend him all the way!!!
Great guy, extremely friendly
He is chill, tells awesome stories about life and whatever, and teaches Statics like a boss. The class is quite a bit of work, it may seem (just homework), but he makes the exams easy for anyone who has followed along. The class is online but I wish it weren't, because he rocks..
Best teacher I've ever had. I'm not even in Engineering.
BEST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD!! I WOULD WATCH HIS LECTURES OVER AND OVER AGAIN ... A++++++++++++
My role model
Such a good professor
Watch lectures, simple A. Best teacher so far!
Extremely helpful and funny! This is the best class I've had yet and certainly encourages me to stay in engineering. He really tries to help students with the material. Do the MasteringEngineering homework and watch the videos and you should be fine on the exams!
This is a man who strolls into class wearing a pirate hat and riding his pet velociraptor. He requires you write your answers in blood and burns them as an offering to the physics gods. If they are displeased with your answers, the professor gives you the option of having his velociraptor tutor you or devour you.
Dr. Dickrell is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Although his exams are tough with so few questions, thus so little room for mistakes, I feel his teaching style keeps everyone interested and entertained. Whether you go to class or watch the lectures online, I feel this class was well taught and I would take another class with Dickrell.
Great and engaging teacher. Makes watching lectures online actually interesting (didn't know it was possible). Good teacher who is clear in his teaching. Fun, encouraging, and caring about not just his student's grades, but their well being. I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed this class. Definitely recommend.
DJD3 is a very good engineering professor. One of few professors alive who knows internet memes and how to use them! EX: "The numbers of unknowns in this equation are too damn high!" (McMillan reference included) Would definitely recommend, good teaching style, very helpful, good sense of humor. But beware of his love for rock climbing.

GREAT TEACHER!!! only thing is that there are only 3 maximum 4 Questions per exam so if you have one wrong you'll lose about 30 points.. besides that he is awesome!! i really enjoyed his lectures!
The best teacher I've ever had at any level. He makes you interested in the subject matter instead of just wanting to pass and move on to the next class. If I could give him an award I would. He is is very down the earth, willing to help you out, funny, and I'll be darned if he's not the most beautiful professor at UF. Word.
Great professor! You will do fine as long as you keep up with the lectures and do the homework problems.
Dr. D is like sunshine on a cloudy day!!! He will led you to an engineering pot of gold at the end of a homework rainbow!!!!
Amazing, does everything he can to keep you engaged throughout the lecture. Gives great advice not just for school but for life, only professor to have done that in a long time. Cool dude
AWESOME!!!! SUPER COOL!! by far the best professor I have had at UF.
I took the EFTP summer engineering course and he taught a programming class that was absolutely the greatest class I have ever taken at UF. I wish i failed it just so i could take it again. He is kick butt for a lack of cursing. A++++++++
A cool, hip teacher, DJD3 teaches statics like a real DJ, pouring knowledge into your soul via the beautiful mechanism of music. He likes to rock out in class and often takes jam breaks, break dances, and crowd surfs in his audience. He may give me a F-, but I give him an A+!
Honestly, most awesome professor you will ever have at UF. Even people that don't need this class would love it. Schools need more professors like him!
The best most hottest teacher at the University of Florida.
One of the best professors at the University of Florida. Taught an EFTP class over the summer and was amazing. Also the hottest professor alive!!!
BEST TEACHER EVER! Genuinely, a nice man and a great teacher! Really sparked my interest in the subject. Also, he is extremely helpful and clear. Makes the material seem easy!
Great professor, I really liked him. gave interesting lectures about the topic and usually added a nice personal anecdote. It's nice to hear about a professor's family and hobbies, makes them seem like a real person. Only thing I say is watch out for trick questions on those exams, because I've noticed there is usually one on each exam.
I think that he he knows what he is talking about and it shows a lot in his teaching.
This class was fantastic, Dickrell was very personable and nice. I enjoyed his class. The classes that he puts online for streaming are better to watch at home than to go to class.
This guy is awesome. Dont need to do much to get an A just follow his lectures online and do your homework.
Really cool teacher. Class is video taped so you don't have to attend class. While you don't have to attend I say attend if you can. You can ask more questions and he always has more to say/joke about before and after the filming. Tests are slightly difficult but definitely passable with some studying.
One of the best professors I've had at UF. Gives advise on general issues as well as help with Statics. Exams can be a little tricky but if you actually do the homework and study practice exams you will do fine!
Dr. Dickrell is a phenomenal professor. He makes statics easy and even interesting! Super easy to talk to in office hours about anything you want. Definitely take the class.
Great professor, Great class. Highly Recommend. Do the homework and you will do great.
Dr. Dickrell is the best! I think he's a cool guy in general and he does a great job explaining the material. I think the exams are pretty straightforward if you pay attention in class and do the mastering engineering homework.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND YOU WILL SUCCEED.
Dickrell is a great professor. Do the homework and you'll get an A
he is super attractive but more importantly he is a great teacher. watching lectures is not a bore and exams are straight forward. gives tons of chances to get 100 for homework
Easily the best teacher I have had at UF. Engages the students academically and socially. Test are straightforward, and lectures are actually enjoyable. Definitely would recommend him (not that you really have a choice)
Great professor. Cares about his students, lectures are easy to watch. Material is VERY easy if you do the assigned work. Easy A.
Dickrell is awesome. Usually talks about random stuff first 5 minutes of lecture and always says exactly what will be on the exams. Do the homework and the class is easy!
Exams are very straightforward. However, on multiple choice questions, he puts close answers instead of exact answers, which can be very tricky. Overall, very great professor and has funny tweets.
Prof. Dickrell made learning a difficult subject easy. He offers the lectures online so you don't have to go to class. As long as you watch all the lectures and do the Mastering Engineering homework you should be fine. I never used the textbook and would recommend not buying it.
Inspiring and very helpful. Got me extremely interested in the topivc
Great professor! Always starts class with little anecdotes about life. Very helpful and explains material very well. He's a fair professor and makes learning the material fun!
Really interesting favorite class thus far
Homeworks due three times a week. Engaging.
He was a very entertaining person to watch. He was engaging, even through the video lectures. Always starts class with an anecdote to get going and it's nearly always some piece of advice that can help with life. He is very clear and consistent with his teaching. Very easy to learn from.
Hands down, best teacher I have had. Course is relatively difficult and requires work but if you watch every lecture and do the homework and quizzes you will be fine. He teaches extremely well and makes it easy to understand statics.
Not helpful at all in office hours.
Dan is a wonderful lecturer. He clearly outlines what you need to know to succeed in the class. He can convey the relatively difficult material in Statics in an understandable way. The last week he stopped responding to emails and did not post and extra credit assignment that he promised. Despite this poor ending, I would take his class again.
The class material wasn't too bad if you liked physics 1. Though, I hated that the exams were free response with no credit for work. He basically had a little box where you put the answer. If you made an algebra mistake, you're toast. That's why I ended up with a B in the class. I wish he would just do multiple choice or regular free response.
Most overrated professor at UF. I personally think he was a terrible teacher who oversimplified almost every single lecture. The homework was always 1000 times harder than his examples in lecture, which SUCKS for the not-so-mechanically inclined. No partial credit on STATICS exams?! WTF is that? One math mistake and you're down a letter grade or 2.
His exams are not fair. They are short-answer and you do not get to show any work for the exams. Even if you understand the material you could still end up with a bad score on your exam by getting one part of a question wrong.
He's charismatic and pretty funny. But at least during my semester, the tests really felt unfair. There's no partial credit at all, make a math mistake and you're down a few letter grades. It's pretty intense. However, he'll probably try to make up for this in someway. You don't really have a choice but to take him though. Just get ready.
He is a great professor. Very very smart. He doesn't give partial credit, but anyone who sees the world in black and white, like I do, will understand this. In the real world, you are either right or wrong, there is no partial credit. And he believes in this as well. His test are tough but as long as you study, you will be fine.

Make a simple math mistake and you're looking at the loss of a letter grade. While this may seem to make sense, sometimes under stressful situations people can punch a number into a calculator wrong - of course if this occurs, it invalidates all of the knowledge gained that can lead somebody to a right answer. Brutal grading scheme.
He over-simplifies lectures. His exams and quizzes are significantly harder than the examples he gives in class and there is no partial credit on his exams.
Professor is charismatic and lectures are entertaining. However, he changed the worth of HW from 25% to 10% half way through the semester, tests give no room for error with no partial credit, and homework problems given were given without enough information to solve them at times. Not a good class but there is no other option for professor.
Honestly I liked him after having him for Statics but he was a complete and utter let down in Dynamics. Often it seemed like he was barely prepared for lectures. Lecture quality was low, he failed to work through examples consistently and unless you do a lot of work on your own, prepare to have a lackluster understanding of the subject.
Horrible teacher. Wastes time on meaningless philosophy lectures so he doesn't leave himself enough time to actually teach. The class would have went fine if he didn't change the grading scale without warning and he doesn't care who it affects. Wouldn't recommend taking him, but sadly he's the only teacher.
He is a cool professor & his lectures are good but his class is HARD. His tests are difficult & tricky. Free response but he doesn't give partial credit, just a box to write your final answer. He doesn't keep his word & had to curve the class at the end because half the class was failing and the other got mostly C's.
Excruciatingly vague in lecture. Homework may or may not match up with material covered in class. Tests are designed more toward assessing your aptitude for attention to detail and meticulous problem-solving skills (frequently algebra) than true understanding of the topics and contents this class is intended to teach you. Only one who teaches it.
Probably the coolest professor I've had. Lectures are clear and easy to follow if you pay attention and actually do the daily homework. Tests are fair as long as you study for them... He doesn't make it easy but if you put in the effort, you'll get the grade you deserve. Statics is very systematic. Just follow the steps!
He is a good professor, but he will not give you the grade. Expect to work, he will tell you at the beginning the best way to pass is to do practice problems, and it is an absolute must. If you only do the required work, you will most likely get an average grade. He is generally clear on expectations, and will clarify if you ask questions.
He did not know how to effectively teach all the material he expects students to know. He spends way too much time talking about philosophy and other subjects, causing him to rush the actual course material. All examples he covers in class are much easier than what is on the exam.
Dr. D is a very unique and real dude, but in a good way. He's very philosophical, but his teaching style is geared more towards breaking it down to the basics instead of losing you with the algebra and problem solving that he expects on tests. Honestly, if you do what he asks of you, you will succeed. Basically, sum the forces and the moments.
He spends 5 min every lecture giving advice. 40 Lectures*5 min 200 min. Each lecture is 50 min, so he effectively wastes 4 lectures on giving advice! On top of that, he schedules exams on lecture days, another 6 lectures wasted. Do the fundamental problems in textbook/don't get behind (course is cumulative). Straightforward affair otherwise.
Tries to dumb down material which only achieves confusion. His definitions are informal, not from textbook and always impromptu. If you're not attracted to him you can clearly see past his suffocating ego. Lectures are almost 100% useless, just watch the vids at 4x. My advice: get yourself acquianted with the TAs and the textbook too...
Dan is Horrible in mechanics of materials, he does not know the material, nor does he understand it. He tries to bluff his way through the course, by riding on arrogates and cockiness. And dont ask him any moderately difficult questions in office hours, because he will just laugh it off and say you dont have to know that.
He's a great proffesor. Use the TA's! Do the HW and fundamental problems. He doesnt talk about his roles in the notebook nor blue valentine but he teaches Statics really well. Nevertheless his exams are tricky. He says he likes to separate "A" students by adding dneaky problems on exams. Brilliant professor nonetheless.
Just great
He is that cool guy professor that you kind of get the vibe is winging it in lectures. A true master of evading tough questions. Overall though he's not bad. The hardest part about this class is not the material, it's really how well you perform under pressure. The tests are easy but critical. Drop a (-) sign and you could be down 30 points.
He's a pretty good professor. Either you'll love him or think he's a complete tool. His tests aren't hard in regards to material, just somewhat of a conceptual nightmare. But he's gotta be the buster for engineers to toughen them up. Just sleep with the book through the semester and you can scrounge by.
I thought Daniel was a great teacher but others have some negative opinions. I will say that the tests can be tough since there isn't really partial credit. I did all of the homework problems and even the optional ones which I think prepare you well for the exam and I easily got an A in the class.
Best advice I can give is to pretend that the dropped exam doesn't exist. Proceed as though each test will be your overall grade. Get. A. Good. Grade. On. Exam. 1. Do. Homework.
Not a poor teacher, but certainly not exciting. Also, the first 10-15 minutes every lecture were useless. Left rather disappointed by his charisma and teaching style.
Perhaps one of the stupidest classes I've ever taken. His exams are no partial credit - you write your answer in a box, and do your scratch work on a separate sheet of paper that gets thrown away. Physics should revolve around the procedure, and I shouldn't lose 20% of my grade for an arithmetic error.
Homework and quizzes are easy but when it comes to the exams, there are no partial credit and the professor doesn't drop your lowest exams anymore. Exams are more conceptual and tricky and if you bomb two of them, there's no hope of passing. As a computer engineer, never taking any mechanical engineering classes ever again.
He is a great professor who constantly displays full understanding of the material in the class. If you show up or watch the videos ready to learn, you should do fine in the class. The tests can be challenging though.
If you watch the lectures and do all the hw the tests are straightforward and simple. Great teacher whose lectures are worth watching.
Material isn't difficult, but exams don't offer partial credit. Annoying personality - he acts like he knows so much about statics, but just ask him any reasonably difficult question and find out for yourself. Too arrogant to even realize it.
A really awesome professor and one of my favorites that I have had. Super down to earth and never out to get you. Tells you everything you need to know straight up with no bs.
Slow to answer emails (or in my case not at all), no partial credit on difficult exams, and he didn't even curve our classes 55 average on a test? Not a good teacher.
He's cocky, but he does care abut his students. His statics class isn't easy but it is doable if you put in the time.
He's a great lecturer for statics, I always enjoyed the lectures. He teaches you what you need to know, does some examples, and then assigns homework that makes you apply what you should have learned in the lecture. I like his exams; they are fair but still require you to think and apply what you have learned. He does a great job with this course.
Amazing class, very fair and structured really well
Absolute beast of a professor, perfect balance of difficulty, not too easy but makes excellent scores on exams very achievable. DO your homework instead of chegging it and you wont need much more effort than that. Top lecturer so far, clearly states exam expectations and how to do it, doesn't get better than that. Cares about students and willhelp
Awful lecturer. He does not care at all about his lectures and shows up to class unprepared. Will do problems during class and then not finish them because he messed up something. Very patronizing and condescending. Cancels lecture randomly and still assigns homework on topics he hasn't taught or didn't develop enough. Need Chegg to actually learn.
Nice guy, he's a good lecturer who really puts things into perspective. He tells you exactly what you are going to be building on for future classes so you know which concepts are important and need to be fully understood. There are only 2 exams so you gotta make them count. Overall cool guy
He definitely seems to care about the future of his students and their success in the class. However, the class itself was a terrible experience in my opinion. Many HW and quizzes assigned with really short notice. He and his primary TA really come across as condescending in emails. Gets frustrated after the class doesn't do well on exams, etc.
His lectures were some of the best I've been to, he does a good job making sure you gain an intuitive understanding of the material. He doesn't do as well of a job at explaining all the math but you do understand what it all does. Weighted heavily towards tests but the tests and assignments were a fair representation of the HW and quizzes assigned.
DJD3 is great. He dropped the midterm and made the final rly easy so kids could pass. All the HW and quizzes are online so that part of your grade should be a free 100. He also gave extra credit and I think he curved the final. I learned absolutely nothing in this class and should've failed, but I came out with a B. Nice guy too.
I am an engineering student and I have dealt with some pretty bad professors, but this class has been one of my worst experiences. I took this class online: No office hours, lectures and HWs were frequently uploaded late, and I would often get 1-3 word responses to multi-paragraph emails. Unless you want to teach yourself everything, avoid!
Tbh i didnt like him much at the start of the semester, but as the class went on I realized that he is actually very good at teaching you what you need to know. Always VERY clear about what you will and wont be tested on. Tests are more than fair, textbook can be found online for free. Do the HW and youll be just fine!!
Strangely specific in structuring of his homework and exams, but solid in giving you what you need to know in his lectures. Most of the homework is online, but only use it to supplement your understanding. If you can do the homework, the exams are simply extensions of your knowledge. Solid professor with a genuine interest in the course and field.
have taken him for statics, he was decent. He put minimal effort into teaching dynamics, did not even have office hours. Barely any examples were given and the lectures were just him showing parts of the book, nothing you couldnt read yourself. The tests were ok but if you do not wanna teach yourself the course then you should take someone else.
Quality teacher. His online lectures each week were very short and his homework was very light.
Really great prof! Great lectures and straightforward homework. You get notes for the exams which are also pretty straightforward. homework takes time and can be a little tough but nothing unbearable
Overall, pretty good professor. His lectures are interesting. Lots of homework but not anything not doable. He really cares about his students and will make sure everyone does well on exams. Exams are hard but as long as you know the homework you will be okay. Take him
His class is very challenging. Unlike what most people are saying, this class is not easy. Avoid this class if you can
Literally the worst. He is high key rude and if you send him an email you can tell he actually does not care because he replies with 1-2 words. His lecture vids aren't even clear and the exams are so much harder than his examples/hw. Avoid!
He's a very fair professor and cares about how his students do. His lecture videos were done well in my opinion. Statics can be difficult if you don't have a solid grasp on physics 1 and calc 3 material so make sure you're comfortable with those subjects. If you do all the homework (which isn't much) you will be fine in this class.
Extremely underrated. If you prefer professors to be straight to the point this your guy. Lectures tell you everything you need to know and the class structure is great for asking questions. A bit cocky for someone teaching a first/second year class but he does it extremely well.
DJD3 is a UF urban legend at this point. Hes a decent professor didnt really watch any of his lectures just learned based off YouTube and did fine. Statics is pretty straightforward once you grasp the basics and he practically tells you whats on each exam. The exam format sucked however. Definitely an interesting character.
He's a good professor and he really knows his stuff when he's talking about statics, but he's barely reachable so if you have questions go to office hours. Lectures are prerecorded and posted for the semester. If you keep up with the HW and lectures you should be good for exams. He also gives you a good idea of what will be on the exams before.
Aynchronous class so module videos are the lectures. His feedback and office hours were very vague and not useful. He can be condescending and confusing. Not clear on grading criteria. Module videos make the work seems easy, Hws not that bad, but the quizzes and exams were horrible and not similar to any of the previous work.
He interfered with the classes where he isn't an instructor, set criteria that have nothing to do with students' proper understanding of the subject. Be aware: he is a young guy who likes to reinvent the wheel, copy-pastes from various textbooks, and rephrases the questions awkwardly. In his recorded lectures, he doesn't teach efficient methods.
Not responsible at all. If send him emials, it takes weeks to get response. And not helpful at all. I do think he didn't take proper responsibility as an instructor of this class.
Daniel created an unfair way of grading that I have never seen since I was in school for so many years. The multiple choice questions in his quizzes often have as many as ten or more options. If you choose the right one, you will get points, and you will lose points if you choose the wrong one. Getting one correct and one wrong will give u a zero
He had recorded lectures. They were pretty good. He covered the material well, and the exams were like the homeworks. Very fair class. If you do the homeworks, you will do well.
Took online summer semester 2021. If you're good with free-body diagrams, it shouldn't be that bad. Recorded lectures were from 2017 iirc, but he said he's probably going to update them soon. Not that bad once you understand concepts - no curveballs. Graded with weekly HW/Quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. Midterm is 2d, Final is 3d.
The entire class was group work. Everything, from homework to projects had to be done in a group, despite the work being designed for individual submission. Coupled with subpar lectures with too few examples and the fact that the class was unpublished before giving us our final grades, I cannot recommend him. He was also pretty bad at communicating
I took it during summer 2021. It was a manageable course. The quizzes are worth more than the exams when I had this class, so be prepared. There was also no honor lock, so it wasn't too bad. The exams are fair, but a little bit more challenging than the quizzes. Make sure you know the material THOROUGHLY.
Professor didn't put much effort into this class. Threw some problems together and made us work on it in groups. Same with the projects. Lectures were boring, he just read off whatever was in the textbook. Will not judge him as a professor for the in person or other courses, but Dynamics online was awful, learned nothing.
Don't mind All these 1 star reviews for EGM2511. The class is the EASIEST technical elective out there. its literally physics 1.
He makes the exam 10 times more difficult than the actual homework or than what he actually teaches. The exams are only about 4 questions, making them even harder as you don't have much room to mess up. The exams don't tend to match his reviews and include things that he never referenced in class.
Extremely rude and condescending when you ask him questions, usually unwilling to help, even if you've put in genuine effort to understand the material before asking. Also not accessible outside of class and only has office hours once per week. Even if you email him, he will not respond.
I do not understand all the bad reviews. He is fun, and the lectures are interesting and pretty easy. Homework is long but graded fairly. The only real problem is that he is very very slow at grading, as you likely will get your homework grade a month after it was due. Pretty solid, though, and exams are kinda hard but not too bad.
A tricky class because exams are designed to test your problem-solving ability, not just what you can memorize. He does no favors grading, so grades can be shockingly low. As a person, a bit pretentious and sarcastic, but I believe he has good intentions. You just have to show that you care about his class.
If you email him, don't expect him to respond or even care to read it no matter the situation that you're going through he will not care. The worst engineering professor I had by a long shot.
The class is pretty straight forward in regards to content (not many new concepts). The exams were fair, and one of them even had a question off the review. However, the exams usually only had four questions which is pretty nerve-racking. He did offer extra credit on the last exam and there were quiz and homework drops.
As for )ickrell himself, he is a knowledgeable professor and explains the concepts pretty well. As for the class structure, exams make up 80% of your grade and exam questions can be hit or miss depending on what form you get. Exams are also 4 questions so a mistake on one question can realistically bring your grade down a letter. Hard to get an A.
Awesome lecturer- makes you actually want to come to class. Also always tries to relate the material to what you might be expected to do as an engineer. Quizzes are hands down the most difficult quizzes I have ever taken, but the exams are extremely fair. Overall, would take again.
Dr. Dickrell is a funny guy, to be honest, his class is very engaging and I usually never get bored in his class. He is trying a new approach for exams by making them multiple choice so each question is all or nothing, but they are fair exams. His quizzes are impossible though each average is at least a 50%
He was a good lecturer but the quizzes are the worst. For instance, it will ask you 'true or false is the force at point A 50N instead of just asking you to give the force at point A. This is made purposefully to trick you so if you get a force other than 50N then you have no clue if that's because the answer is false or you are wrong.
Took Dr D for statics and MoM, and I would take him again. His exams are difficult, but I have learned a lot in both classes. Take him if you're willing to put in the time and effort, and you will definitely learn the material well. He is more of a tough love type of professor, but he is very accessible outside of class, which always helps.
he would go over concepts very briefly and expect to have an in-depth understanding of the material.
A very solid professor. Exams were difficult but fair. Quizzes could be unfair, but he was willing to work with students in order to improve grades. Can come across as cold and short, has a high ego, but really does want students to succeed at the end of the day.
Miserable time. Lectures are not bad but the guy is the most egotistical person you will ever meet. He certainly tries to trick you every chance possible and most of his exam answers are none of the above because whoever makes them makes numerous errors themselves.
I would definitely not take this class with him again. There's no denying his lectures are good, but he does not go nearly in depth to the level you would need to be able to do the problems he puts on exams/quizzes. Quiz averages were 50% each time and exams weren't too far off at about 65% average. He does not care about students.
Not a great professor. Solid lectures but overall horrible person, super hard grader and very narcissistic. Would not take again. Also makes lots of mistakes in his quizzes and exams and then gets mad at students for pointing them out.
-His syllabus is unclear and doesn't explain the weight of the quizzes whatsoever. Given that he deleted our canvas page before the end of class I assume they're in the same category as HW. -Exams are very tough and ~70% of the grade. No answer is an option because whoever makes them makes many errors and some problems are unsolvable. -Rude
Had an A up until the very end. Do not even know how I did on the final exam because he refuses to show grades. Honestly just felt kind of screwed by him. Oh well.
All or nothing class, as in no partial credit. You teach yourself based on little notes and the 4/5hw problems a week, for the exams worth 70% of your grade. Seek alternative.
Made my girlfriend cry :(
A very toxic person. Insults and taunts the class in announcement emails. Exams were 12 questions each multiple choice (meaning no partial credit). Also, he sleeps with his TA's.
Fantastic lecturer, mid person. Definitely a bit self-absorbent which can really show if you interact with him individually. Has 100 or 0 one question quizzes and sometimes likes to be tricky (like putting none of the above on an exam where you could have just rounded differently). Btw that exam's average was a 10% but he did give us a makeup.
This professor has engaging lectures with real world issues. However, the problems he shares during lecture are elementary in comparison to the homework. The tests are medium difficulty when compared to the homework. He's not accommodating to students with medical disabilities even with DRC letter. His personality can be implied from his name.
Pretty good at lecturing but is beyond horrible when it comes to preparing you for exams. Lectures and HW and quizzes were all doable but exams were ungodly hard and you had absolutely nothing to study from. My study group of decently academically inclined people came to the conclusion that studying does not help at all.
Good lecturer, not a great guy to deal with. Finnicky about partial credit, which is an issue when each exam has only 3 q's. Doesn't admit to his own faults, and comes off as having a bit of an ego (despite being one of the lowest-paid professors in MAE..). Would avoid if possible, but if you have to take it with him, it's not the end of the world.
Dr. Dickrell is an amazing lecturer. However, his tests are always harder than what he claims they are. He has a bit of an ego which makes him pretty unapproachable in office hours. Other than that, his lectures are entertaining enough to watch.
Good lecturer but be prepared to spend a lot of time studying. Example problems in lectures are elementary to quiz problems and quiz problems are elementary to test problems. Also likes to pull tricks like changing unit vectors. Suggest doing all the problems from the book and for extra help, Jeff Hanson's Statics series on Youtube is very helpful.
Honestly, best lecturer I have ever had at UF but his exams are questionable. Homework is not excessively difficult but his TAs can be a bit nitpicky. You either like him enough to tolerate the class or wish to never take the class with him again. He is also very nice sometimes ("sometimes") but that can be said with other UF professors.
Yeah, do yourself a favor and don't take him. The worst ego and personality of any professors I have had at UF. Gets off at belittling students. Exams are very different from homework/content taught in lectures. One good thing is that he is pretty lenient grader on exams so you can often get a bunch of points just for doing minimal work.
Does not prepare you for exams. Homework/quizzes are elementary compared to tests given (all of which had a failing average). 1st test average was a 20%, however, we were given a retake. Would honestly stay away. Even if you knew the material thoroughly in Statics, there was still a high chance you were going to fail his exams.
Take positive reviews with a grain of salt. Gaslights you in lectures to believe his exams will be easy, when they are not. Exam averages were all below failing- concerning for a Statics course. Material in lectures and homework do not compare to difficulty on exam. Little to no practice resources for exams, which are 75% of total grade.
Amazing lecturer. Terrible exam giver. Gives very hard exams and will call you stupid for not doing well on them. Exam grades are very subjective and he will ultimately decide at the end of the class if you deserve to pass or fail regardless of your grade in Canvas. Oddly philosophical and wise. Loves to give you life advice
Awful
Ruins GPAs Exam 1 so bad he had to give the whole class a retake, exam 2 average of 60, the final had like an undisclosed average as the class was archived before we could check. We received a scathing email about our poor performance and about how we were not ready and should have failed.
My third time taking Dr. Dickrell. This semester he placed an emphasis on being "chill" and not burying students with work. Attendance was not taken, but I believe he paid attention to who showed up and graded accordingly. He tended to focus on discussing emotional, personal, and career tips rather than true mechanical design, which I didn't love.
Don't take this class with him
PLEASE do not take this class with him, do it with anyone else. He says sexist things about women and constantly hints that they will his fail his class. He talks with such arrogance and is not helpful in office hours, sits there one his phone. When I would ask him a question he would judge me for not knowing the answer than actually helping.
Daniel Dickrell is honestly a very tough professor. He gives 3 exams for this class and expects the average for exam 2 to drop significantly. The lectures are pretty nice and pre-recorded if online. Homework is decently doable and not too long, maybe 2-3 hours a week. The real issue is the exams, the final for this class was graded on 3 questions.
Had great lectures but very tough exams.
Very frustrating exams, very heavily weighted. It's not fun to have 30% of your grade hinge on your ability to solve two problems only. Otherwise a very engaging lecturer, though not very kind to students outside of class.
He's a good lecturer and overall I felt that the tests were mostly based on the homework. 75% of your grade is your tests so be sure to not neglect them. Homeworks are the best practice and also doing practice problems from the textbook if you need extra practice. Overall good teacher I would take him again.
I am almost done with this class, and I can say by far that this is the worst professor I have ever taken. Blatantly rude and disrespectful in email communicaitions, and makes assignments due on 1am on incosistent days, so you miss the submission time. No partial credit, and makes no effort to accomidate anything more than what is required by UF.
His lectures are amazing, and his videos are very engaging. However, he was almost never accessible and didn't have office hours. Some quizzes (which were weekly) were overly challenging and felt like it was meant to bring your grade down. Very annoying that there's no partial points given anywhere on these quizzes too.
Tough professor, with engaging lectures but very challenging exams. Utilize unstuck AI and the free textbook to get the most out of the class.
Took his online asynchronous dynamics class for Summer C. As someone who took his Fall statics class (hybrid), dynamics was similar: we were graded on 2 exams and several HWs. Flexible for summer internships/jobs bc the exams were open for 24hrs. He can be hard to reach and his emails can be informal/blunt but overall his lectures are informative.
The class material is super easy. If you passed PHY2048 at UF the material will be a breeze. However, the way he grades is downright horrible. Expect to be loosing crazy points every assignment for miniscule shit (sig figs, formatting, file type). I spent every assignment doing the work then spending an hour re-writing it in the correct format.
Sends a weekly email complaining about students and said those that did good on his quiz will be successful in the future and “There will be no need for the rest”. His comments on students are disrespectful, if 119/189 students received a 0 on his quiz, and 28 of the others got a 50 there might be a teaching or course structure error, or its him
Do NOT take this guy if you want to pass. His only goal is to give you overly difficult quizzes that feel like they are intended to bring your grade down. 65% of the class made a zero on the quiz and his response was "this should be a wakeup call to the students." DO NOT TAKE. I would've rather put myself a semester behind then take this guy.
An easy class in terms of material, but it was made overly difficult by the professor. I spend equal time formatting the assignments to his specific requirements as I do actually solving the problems. He took 30 points off on a quiz because my drawing didn't look good enough. Blames students when almost everyone fails. Very disrespectful in emails.
Final exam is worth 50% of your grade, its insane. This man is extremely egotistical, stuck up and genuinely one of the rudest people I have ever met. When majority of the class is failing he blames the students and taunts them. Horrible grader as-well he doesn't make instructions clear and blames you when you don't meet his unspecified criteria.
This man should not be a professor! He's isn't clear about what he's looking for and grades things to his made up standards he doesn't specify. He gives great lectures that are very easy to follow. Other than that I'm embarrassed that this guy is a professor I've had nothing but bad experiences with him. How does he have a job here…
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE CLASS!!! This class is an absolute joke. Lectures are useless and the homeworks and quizzes are made by the TAs who have NO idea what they are doing. Almost every homework has errors or incomplete/wrong information. You will do everything right and think you made a mistake when it was actually just faulty grading. Waste of $
Dr. Dickrell is one of the most passionate and engaging lecturers I have ever seen. Incredibly well done lectures and a very manageable amount of homework. The problem here is that he will grade tests and quizzes incorrectly and sometimes unfairly. Also SUPER rude when you try to communicate or if students do poorly on a test.
Final exam was worth 40% of your grade. Took every one from an A to a B instantly
I wish that a rating of 0 was possible because giving him a 1 is too generous. The worst professor I have ever had at this school. I would rather have delayed my graduation another year AGAIN than take him. I had an A the entire semester and found out via one.uf my final grade after the final and it's undisputed. Do not under any circumstance take
His lectures were fine, but his grading policy for the course was frustrating. I felt that I had a strong understanding of Statics, but making small mistakes on quizzes and exams was heavily penalized. Final grades were posted on one.uf today, but we haven't even received our final exam scores.
Horrible professor, has a huge ego and is unbearable. He's strict with grading and its basically impossible to get above a B with how he grades things. Would not take him again, avoid him for every single class he teaches!!!
His lectures were fine, but the way he runs the class is honestly a joke. The final exam is worth 50% of the overall grade, and best part is he isn't going to post our final exam scores. I felt like I understood Statics well, went from having an A to a B- because of the final.
So hard to get an A, but I feel like I learned statics. He sent out demeaning messages saying that we will not be needed as engineers. I know options are limited, so if you need to take it with him just remember that professors only put students down so they can feel better about themselves. Avoid if you can!!!
Absolutely atrocious. Incredibly rude and degrading professor who loves to belittle students for making mistakes that can be explained by the poor structure of his exams and quizzes. I got an A on the final but I still feel compelled to warn others because the lengths I took to get it were unreasonable for what should be a very easy class.
Weekly quizzes were often 1-2 questions, significantly harder than the homework, and graded pass/fail. His favorite activity was mocking the students in the canvas announcements for bad score distributions and refusing to self-reflect. Managed to carry an A into the final and ended with a C for getting two questions wrong (one of which for units).
has the best lectures I have ever watched. Conversely, this class has the most god awful grading ever. An example is me getting a 0/30 on a quiz because it was 1 question with no partial credit. Another is how due to the final being 40% of our grade, and 40% of the final is the first question, makes that one question worth 16% of your grade.
Professor Dickrell has some of the best lectures I've ever seen, most topics are explained easily and don't take up too much time. The class structure was basically watch the lectures (1-2 hours) do the one homework, then a quiz week. Quizzes were slightly harder Homeworks and exams covered most of what we learned in class. Lots of true false
Has incredible lecture videos that helped me understand the content better than any other resource outside of the class. Most of his hate is unwarranted but the grading in the class is definitely unbalanced. Even getting a single problem wrong on the exams can make getting an A unattainable. I think the emails he sends out are real more than rude.
Lectures were fine, but grading was extremely unfair. Over the summer semester there was no partial credit on quizzes, which are 40% of the grade. Later on, he gave the occasional partial credit question but most weren't. The content was difficult but doable with a lot of effort.
Dr. Dickrell is a great online lecturer. I took statics over the summer online. I never put in more than 5 hours a week total—(hw, quizzes, lectures, reviewing). My guess is 25-33% earned an A or A-, and it is not difficult to do so if you just do the assigned works. He is not rude, just straightforward. Tests were fair and easier than HWs.
Avoid this professor if possible. The lectures don't match the exams, there's little guidance on what will be tested, and the grading is extremely harsh. Entire classes are doing poorly and nothing changes. Homework and quizzes don't help your grade — everything depends on impossible exams. Easily one of the most frustrating classes at UF.
Do NOT take this professor. Lectures feel disconnected from what appears on the exams, no review or guidance is given, and he refuses to offer support or opportunities to improve your grade. Entire classes are failing and he acts like that's normal.
Lectures don't match the exams, there's no guidance on what will be tested, and the grading is extremely harsh. Entire classes are doing poorly and nothing changes. Homework and quizzes don't count — your entire grade depends on impossible exams. Easily one of the most frustrating classes I've taken.
DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE Please do any other professor
He didn't release our midterm grades until after the class registration deadline, making it impossible for students to decide whether to drop the course. He never showed up to the review session and didn't tell us what topics would be on the exam. Overall, he makes the class unnecessarily difficult and unhelpful.
80% of the class were 2 exams, average on the mid term was a 48%. He cancels or moves almost every office hour session
This professor is the devil reincarnated. The midterm average was below 50% and he blamed it on us instead of taking initiative. I genuinely know the topics in the class, but even I found the midterm to be close to impossible. He chose questions for the exam that were extremely unclear, and he even made a mistake in the answer key. Don't take.
Personality is that of a stereotypical frat kid. Only redeeming feature is decent lectures. Intentionally misled us about exam format leading to ~30% average forcing him to throw out the exam. Hid final grades so nobody knew what they got at the end. I've heard he was decent in other semester though. Often insufferable to interact with.
DO NOT. He has only gotten eviller over the last year.
Daniel Dickrell wants to see you fail. His lectures are from a time when he had light in his eyes and when he was a good teacher but the exams are designed way harder than the class and often try to trick you more than test your Statics knowledge. Regularly brags about how low his exam averages are.
First exam average was deadass like a 45 and this guy sent out like 6 different graphs showing us how shit we all did. 80% of the class is currently failing and its been so bad that were pretty sure the school has stepped in to try and convince him to have mercy on us. Pretty sure he's inebriated in the lectures too but idk. Flirts w his TA's.
First exam average was a 47% with around 15% of the class getting a 25 or lower. In an announcement he told everyone who didn't pass the exam (which is around 85%) to either work a lot harder or outright drop the class rather than take responsibility. Pretty sure the school stepped in because he's been way more lenient ever since.Still do NOT take.
He used to work for company that builds nukes for US government which is lowk tuff asf but don't get it twisted this guy is completely devoid of humanity. almost everyone in the class is failing and he almost seems amused by it. He seems to have some delusional destiny to serve as the gate guardian for all MAE students. Based guy. Shit professor.
This is outrageous how awful he is. His lectures are good but they are old and where recorded before he developed a hatred for everything that stands before him. He is rude in his emails calls you a joke and regularly tells you to drop out of engineering.
50% of his class has a F and he's not curving anything he is just waiting for all the "failures" to drop so his scores look better. Take it with any other professor if you want to pass.
35% of your grade is the midterm and 40% is the final. The 1st Q is worth 40% of the exam grade. The exams are MUCH harder than any of the HW, quizzes, and extra cred. 158/208 students got
im not even kidding during that midterm i saw like 5 people hit the dog with its eyes closed pose and it doesnt help that there is barely any partial credit and that exam was just straight up worth 35 percent of your overall grade i knew like 3 people that ended up just dropping the class
Yall im not even taking this class and it's chopped af lmfao
He has great lectures, but what he talks about in the lectures barely even scratches the surface of what you will see on the exam. Midterm is 35% of grade and final 40%. Midterm average was a 46% with like barely anyone passing the class after. Little to no partial credit. Take with literally anyone else. He does not care about his students.
Take with anyone else... literally anyone. This guy wants you to fail.
His grading scale is horrible and does not accurately demonstrate a student's mastery of the content. Statics problems take a lot of work and his exams are very unforgiving, very little partial credit, and much harder than the homeworks or quizzes. Tests are 75% of grade and there is only two exams. One exam covers 9 modules the other 4 modules.
guys, BUCKLE UP. i had a 4.0 GPA and am taking upper level classes at this point. i swear its nearly impossible to get an A in this class. the professor straight up LIES about what will be on the midterm and final. there's no partial credit on the exams and it's very easy to make a small mistake. he is extremely unhelpful and unavailable.
Even when I felt confident with homework questions, the midterm test was so hard I could barely comprehend it. There's essentially no partial credit. After the midterm we were sent a message that essentially said we all should start looking for more subjective majors.
Despite the amazing lectures half the class was failing because there is zero practice exams and 2 exams make up 75% of your grade. Take any other professor for this class.
Avoid Dickrell at all costs if you can. This man does not care about his students and genuinely could not care less about if his students do well in the course. His lectures are good in theory but his exams are just so excessively bad that it won't matter how many notes or problems you do.
Avoid at all costs. Gives super evil tests. If you can't avoid him you gotta do the homework's 100 times over for the tests bc he doesn't do any review material. Class avg was a 40% on the midterm worth 40% of the grade and he got mad at the students. He did give a retake for partial credit but most of the class dropped or barely passed.
