Erman is one of the best math professors you could have. He explains the material really well so anyone can understand it. The course itself is difficult along with the exams.
I was worried about taking Math 222 but having Erman as a professor was the best thing that could have happened. He tries to be as clear as he can when explaining and is very helpful during office hours. He does all he can to make students understand. If you can get him I would definitely recommend him!
Professor Erman is the best, most helpful, professor I have had at UW, and that says a lot considering the math department here is not around to help you succeed. For a class that is failed a lot, I am doing well and I give all the credit to Professor Erman because he makes sure we understand the material and is fair in writing exams.
The best math professor you can have here in UW-Madison. The tests and quizzes are fairly challenging, but as long as you do all the work you will do well in this class. Strongly suggest to take this class with Prof. Erman if you get a chance.
The best calculus 2 professor out there. I would highly recommend choosing him as a professor because he can explain even the most difficult material and explain it with great clarity. Nothing bad about this teacher at all.
What a great professor. The nature of the class is normally difficult, but so far, this class has been fairly easy. The quizzes aren't always easy, but they definitely are fair. Professor Erman does a fantastic job of explaining topics and makes lectures as interesting as math lectures can be. Where a student might have trouble is with the TA's.
Prof. Erman is my favorite Math prof so far! I highly recommend taking his class. He's funny and a very good teacher. I wasn't a big fan of math before but I loved this class! The course is difficult but I understood everything really well. Thank you, prof!
He is nice and always explains things clearly! Highly recommended!
Fantastic professor. Speaks clearly and explains the steps to problems very well. Exams are well written with slight curveballs here and there. Best Calc professor I've ever had so far.
Very good at explaining a difficult subject. He's extremely easy to understand and wants students to succeed.
Professor Erman is definitely the greatest math professor I have ever had! I respected calculus before, but he made me really enjoy it. He is funny, engaging, and an adorable/helpful individual. He truly cares and helped me move a midterm when I had a physical injury. Recommend him above everyone else!
Dr. Erman is the best professor I have EVER had! He is super easy to understand, and he teaches what he knows about math in a way that makes math seem easy. If you are having any trouble at all just go to his office hours and he will help you personally. The dude is THEE best! He makes an extremely hard class seem like a cake walk. Nuff said.
Hands down the best math professor out there. The class was difficult, but engaging. Thanks Erman
Erman is a great professor. The examples he works in class, however, are much easier than problems that show up on exams. He is a tough grader on exams which is frustrating but fair.
Extremely helpful; a great professor.
If you get a chance take him. Super easy to understand and he literally vibrates with excitement during lecture. His positive attitude is contagious. His exams are pretty easy, just make sure you don't make small mistakes.
Probably the best math teacher I have ever had and by far the best teacher at UW. Really cares about the students and the tests are incredibly fair. If you go to lecture, you really dont have to study much for exams.
Professor Erman is a well prepared and knowledgable porfessor who is happy to help during office hours if you have questions. He is a bit quirky but it keep one engaged in the lecture. I highly recommend him if he is available
He is a really good professor and explains everything really well in lecture. The tests are pretty hard. My TA was also horrible. I really enjoyed his math class even though I didnt receive the grade that I wanted.
Give this prof a chance and you'll be glad you did. Though a bit stiff on the first day, he turned out to be a clear, incredibly fair, generous teacher who made the class laugh. Also helpful were the practice exams provided- do those and you'll know what's on the exams.
Professor Erman made an extremely difficult class manageable. He set clear expectations and was always fair, reachable, and willing to help out. Would definitely recommend him to anyone needing to take a math class at UW!
Awesome professor with a very structured class. Uses good, relevant examples to explain course material and is very fair, helpful. Would definitely recommend
awesome professor. difficult class but worth it with him teaching it. made everything very easy to understand and was very thorough
An amazing professor who makes very organized lecture material. He goes out of his way to clarify problems one might have, even the subtle misconceptions. Exams are tricky but fair. Would definitely recommend.
Prof Erman makes this very difficult class manageable. He is willing and eager to help outside of class. I highly recommend him!
Easily the best math teacher I have ever had, understands the concepts very well and is great at making sure everyone is learning. I don't think I ever heard a negative comment about this prof. I recommend him 100%.
Excellent. He is enthusiastic about the material and exceedingly clear; easily the best math professor I've had. Exams are fair if you are prepared. As long as you stay on top of the material, you should have no problem getting high marks.
He took the last 15 minutes of our last lecture to tell our class how honored he was to be able to teach our class. What a classy guy! Great teacher.
Erman's passion for both mathematics and teaching is so obvious in his lectures. He takes the time to tell his students important aspects of math culture and development when he thinks it is important. He is very helpful /available during office hours and gracious when someone corrects him in lecture. He is the best math teacher I have ever had.
He is the best professor I have ever had! I do love math, but his own passion for the subject and energy made class fun and interesting. He was funny, helpful, and informative, and I would highly recommend him.
One of the best professors I've had. Loves math and talking about it. Super clear in lecture and willing to help anyone who asks. Not hard to get an A if you put the time in.
A fantastic professor. Definitely see him during his office hours. He goes out of his way to explain problems and concepts in detail. He really cares about his students.
Great Professor! Probably one of the best at the University right now. Really friendly, motivated, clear lectures, and very clear expectations with difficult, but fair exams. He makes you work, but want to. If I were given the choice between him and another prof for the same class, I would hands down choose Erman. I hope he stays at Madison.
speaks with equivocation when talking about something he's unsure about. will leave you confused. takes many points off for small mistakes on exams - there will be fodder for the curve. too many examples in class and not enough talk about knowledge needed to do the problems.
Absolutely fantastic professor, very knowledgeable on the subject and always willing to explain something if you don't understand. Heavy on examples in lecture which is good for understanding but you should make sure you know how to prove the theorems too.
I took his class my first semester of college. I came in not knowing what to expect from college classes and, as a result, nearly failed the 1st exam. I was about to drop the class, but decided to talk to Erman first. He convinced me that I could still succeed in the class and I managed to get a B. Erman is hands down the best professor I've had.
Great prof
Professor Erman is an amazing professor. For teaching such a difficult subject, he makes concepts very clear. He gives students the chance to ask questions during lectures. I really enjoy him and I would definitely take him again. Tests are hard, but they always will be as it's calculus. I highly recommend taking him.
Great professor! The test is easy!(though it is a little tricky compared to the weekly quiz) he is really awesome! But my TA for this course sucks:(
Daniel, as he prefers to be called, is an engaging professor who teaches through examples. Each lecture is pretty much him writing out a problem and then going through the solution. Very clear and straightforward. He focuses more on doing the math right than the reasoning behind it too. Tough class, but very good professor.
It's a calculus class so obviously tests are hard but his lectures are amazingly clear and he teaches with examples which is every students dream. he's incredibly helpful and enthusiastic in lecture and office hours. he's amazing.
Extremely helpful lectures and examples. Makes what could be an extremely difficult class a little better. Would definitely take this again with Professor Erman.
Daniel's grading on tests is usually pretty tough, and considering tests contribute to 95% of your grade, that's pretty important. Do the practice tests religiously and make sure you know the material very well.
He's great.
Concise when he can be- hes a believer of repetition, which honestly is how you tackle techniques such as eulers and error bound
This class was very hard, I had taken the class in high school but even though I knew the material, this class was still difficult, be prepared to work hard for the grade. Also most of the grade is from the mid terms and the final each midterm is worth 25% and the final is worth 45% and the last 5% is just discussion based
Great professor! Lectures are clear and so helpful. He is also very funny and makes his students laugh quite often. I learned the content so well through his lectures and I wish every other math course I'll have to take were taught by him.
In the beginning he warned us that this was going to be a tough course. The class started very fast paced, but once the semester went on it became more manageable. Daniel was always willing to answer questions in class and extremely helpful in office hours. If you have the chance to take a course with him, I would highly recommend that you do.
Seriously one of the best professors in the math department, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and approachable. He gets very into the lectures, and is very specific about what he wants you to do- no curveballs are thrown during exams
I took calculus in high school and struggled a bit. I went into 222 my first semester of college after having a year off from math and understood all of the material fine. Erman is a great professor.
Brilliant professor! Very enthusiastic during lectures and makes sure you understand concepts clearly. Always open to questions, and makes it a point to clear everyone's doubts. Sets moderately hard tests, and has a clear grading criteria. Would definitely take his class again!
I really enjoyed Professor Erman - I went in thinking I like math well enough and came out loving it! Yes, it's an extremely tough class, but he tells you that right from the get-go and he makes it as fun as a math class can be. He's really passionate about the subject and wants to make sure everyone understands what's going on. I highly recommend
Daniel is an amazing person who somehow manages to explain 222 in the best way possible. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you skip you will miss important notes. Although I got a C, I would gladly take another class from him again. If you are late to lecture or talk to a friend, be ready to get called out in front of a 300 person lecture.
He only briefly goes over alot of the important points that would really solidify understanding. I didn't realize how everything was connected until I got to the final exam. Really be sure to practice practice practice the worksheets and make sure you can do every problem
An excellent professor. He puts a lot of work into the class and deserves recognition for it. Honestly I want to bad mouth him for my grade but he seems so authentic it just feels wrong. Just be sure to know the material well after every week and you should be fine. It's a hard class but he makes it worth it.
His teaching is excellent! Explanations are clear, lectures interesting. Learned the hard way that the tests are quite hard and heavily weighted, so you'll need to study REALLY hard for them, especially the final. The textbook wasn't very good compared to the lectures, but you need it for the homework. I'd definitely take Erman again.
I really enjoyed taking this math class, even though I got a C and it kinda tanked my GPA. The exam and midterms are tough, and count for 90% of your grade. However, Daniel is a great lecturer, and does a good job making it funny. I hate math, but I almost looked forward to going to his lectures.
Really an amazing professor. He's super enthusiastic and his exams are very fair. Make sure you do all the homework, but do each homework set at least twice to really master the material.
Great clear-cut professor, with that the material is hard and he grades tough. Very consistent and by the book which can be a blessing and a curse.
He puts a lot of time into his course and is passionate about the success of his students and TAs. I had an amazing TA that helped clarify little details from the lecture material. The three tests are worth 95% of your grade, so it is essential to thoroughly prepare for tests if you have any intention of doing well on them.
He was corrected quite a bit by the head TA and even corrected himself during lecture. He also promised to have practice tests or answer keys up much earlier than they actually appeared. Overall, I give him the benefit of the doubt in handling such a large class and consider him one of my better professors from last semester.
Daniel is by far the best lecturer I've ever had. However, this is balanced out by the fact that 95% of points in the course came from three tests, one of which was 45%. Come on man, that's not fair.
Daniel is awesome. His lectures were very organized, which is great for note taking. Even though it is a tough class, he is very helpful and pleasant, especially when answering questions after class and in office hours. Also, he posts practice exams before every test. DO THESE! They are VERY similar to the exams. Work hard, and you'll be fine!
Professor Erman is an energetic and clear-cut professor. He tells you exactly what is to be required of you to receive a fair grade in his class, but it is easier said than done. He explains the material quite well, I would highly recommend going to all lectures and discussions.
Like his teaching style! not easy to find another great professor like him in UWM.
The best lecturer ever. I serious want to redo this class - or actually have him taught MATH234 as well. He's really good!!
This class was supposed to be one of the toughest out there, but Daniel Erman made the Calc 2 slightly less intimidating. I never went to office hours, but his lecture were very clear and organized. He is also very energetic which helped to keep me awake during power lectures.
Daniel was is by far my favorite professor at UW-Madison. His lectures are very organized and clear. He gives answers to most of the homework questions, which helps comprehend the difficult material. 222 was said to be very a challenging, but Daniel made it more than bearable and I actually enjoyed coming to class to be taught by him.
The best Professor ever. Since I'm a freshman, I thought every college professor is like him! (Seriously no....)I even want to re-enroll or re-take this class - or even more, have him taught me MATH234. He's super great!!!!!!!
Really amazing professor. His office hours were super helpful and he makes a point to learn your name if you ever go. The exams were difficult but he prepares you so well as long as you go and pay attention in lecture. Wish I could have him for every math class@
don't hesitate. choose derman
One of the best math professors I've ever had. I loved how he would do lots of example problems during the lecture to help students understand the application better.
Daniel was an amazing lecturer. The first exam was a wake up call for me, but it is possible to recover from as the final is worth about half of your grade.
Daniel was a fantastic professor, he seemed to really care about teaching his students and wanted to help students as long as they were willing to put in the work. I didn't do great in this class, but I don't think I would have passed without Daniel.
Erman goes through plenty of examples in lecture and gives quizzes that are highly relevant to the exam material.
He is talent and very good at explaining some key knowledge. If you show up in lectures, you will get good grades. Chose him!!!
Erman is single-handedly the greatest math professor you will ever have. Period. Math222 is a very hard class that he made clear, interesting, and doable. On the last day of class we gave him a 5 minute standing ovation and he had tears in his eyes, that's how much he cares about the students. He wants you to do well.
Daniel is amazing! He lectures are comprised of one example after another, which is extremely helpful for homework and quizzes. His practice tests are the exact same format as the actual tests (although I found the actual test to be slightly harder). He actually ended up winning an award for his teaching this year so definitely take him if you can.
If you want learning number theory to be fun, take it with Erman. He's one of the most exciting professors to learn from. He gives so many examples to cement your understanding, and also knows so many applications of number theory to other fields (i.e. cryptography, comp sci, etc..).
He is a good teacher. He always gives students opportunities to ask questions and answers them patiently. Not too much homework.
Daniel is easily the best professor I have had at UW - Madison, take as many chances as you can to be around him, lecture/office hours. He is never dry, and his lectures are clear and interesting, and often funny. He wants everyone to do well and is very clear about his expectations.
Daniel is an awesome professor and by far the best math professor at Wisconsin. The class is very challenging, as both midterms are worth 25% of your grade and the final is worth 45%. Good guy but his tests are pretty difficult, but easy to get partial credit on. Overall a solid prof who cares about student's success.
You would be a fool if you passed on an opportunity to take a class with Daniel.
Hard class good prof
Daniel is one if the best teachers I've had not just in college, overall. He really cares and is very passionate about his work. Class is very test heavy but partial credit is available on most problems, and he provides many practice exams to study from. Would LOVE to have him again
(I took this class as a freshman taking only AP Calculus AB) Daniel is an AMAZING math professor and is the best I have had to date. He is funny, great at explaining difficult concepts, and he genuinely cares about his students. This class is not easy by any means. Please make sure you take his lecture. He influenced me to double major in math.
Absolutely phenomenal professor. As a freshman and hearing all the terrible things about calc 2, I was pretty nervous about taking Math 222. Professor Erman made the topics in calc 2 very understandable (much more clear than the textbook in my opinion). You honestly don't need to read or use the textbook for the class except for the homework.
Daniel is the best math professor I've had at UW Madison. His lectures are clear and interesting. It's apparent he's passionate about the material and the success of his students. I discovered I really enjoy math in his course; thus, I'm continuing in math (linear algebra) because of it! I strongly recommend taking calc 222 w/ Daniel Erman!
Daniel is an amazing professor. Interesting lectures, he does lots of example problems. Lecture notes are not posted online, so go to class. Class was graded off of 2 tests and the final, which kind of stinks, but his reasoning is that this is fair for all students (which it is). He is kind, accommodating, and responsive. Work hard in his class.
Daniel Erman is the best math teacher/professor I've ever had. He cares about his students and their success. You do need to work hard to understand the homework and worksheets as well as go to lectures to be successful in the class. Yes, this class is a weed-out class, but it is not impossible to do well in with a good professor.
One of the best professors I've had. Lectures are interesting enough and correlate directly to tests. He posts practice tests online that follow the real tests perfectly. HIghly recommend Daniel for 222 and can't imagine his other classes are bad either.
Great lecturer, and all the material that appears on tests should be covered. You should study and prepare for the tests, but they are very manageable if you do.
He was one of the best teachers I've ever had. He was a great lecturer and gave opportunities to ask questions and learn from one another. Highly recommend having him as a prof if you can
Daniel is definitely one of the best instructors you can ever get. He is helpful and to the point, and His lecture is clear and well-organized. If you get the chance, I highly recommend you to take this course, especially you just want to apply calculus instead of learning the theory behind.
Daniel is definitely the best professor I've had at UW, and it wasn't really close. His lectures are super clear, his examples are relevant, and he's very open and enthusiastic with student questions. He also provides tons of prep and study material for the midterms and finals. Overall the whole course was coherent and streamlined, and not too hard
Professor Erman is an awesome professor, his lectures are very entertaining and are mostly made of problem examples. The tests are a little hard but with a decent amount of studying you can get an A
Best professor I've ever had, very enthusiastic about his subject and helps simplify how to learn it. Also gives lots of practice exams that are clear and assists you in understanding the material.
Really awesome teacher. He explains the material thoroughly so that everyone understands it.
best professor at uw !! really explains things deeply and asks after every question if anything is unclear. Brings amazing optimism and a cheery face to class and really cares about all the students! Highly recommended !
Best professor I have had at UW Madison. If you have the chance to take a class with him, you really should. He's incredibly passionate but also very humble. Number theory could've been really challenging, but Professor Erman does a great job with the material.
Daniel is a great lecturer. Take 222 with him if you can, although he only teaches once every couple years. The class is really hard, said to have the the highest fail rate at the university, but Daniel is cool and makes it more straight forward. If you attend lecture and take notes and out in effort it should be ok.
Best math teacher ever!!! Makes hour-long lectures feel like two minutes while being able to learn one of the hardest topics in Calculus.
Daniel is the BEST!!! He has so much energy during lectures that it makes his class easy to pay attention in (which is important with tough topics in 222). Daniel is straightforward about what to expect in the class and wants to answer all questions and concerns that he can. I am not even going to get an A in his class but would 100% take it again.
At first, I thought that Daniel wasn't the best, but when we had a sub a couple times in lecture, it made me appreciate him much more, especially when it came time for midterms. Erman was AMAZING at preparing students for midterms because he would go through the material quickly to leave 2-3 lectures dedicated to review, which was EXTREMELY HELPFUL
1 point off for making fun of me during the lecture.
Daniel is by far the best professor I have had at the university. He is engaging and thorough and genuinely seems like he cares about the well-being of his students. As someone who was terrified of taking this class, I can honestly say Daniel's teaching style makes me look forward to going to lecture.
Daniel is perfect as a math professor. He makes the boring characters and numbers attractive, and he know exactly how to keep students engage. Really recommended.
Daniel Erman is the best math professor I have ever had in my entire life. He clearly explains EXACTLY what you need to know and how you need to do each problem. While there are many different ways to do many problems, he generally explains it in the most straightforward manner. He is incredibly thoughtful and actually cares about his students.
Professor Erman is the best math professor I could have asked for to have during my first semester of college. He has clear, reasonable expectations and is extremely likeable. He had a good balance of explaining both overarching concepts and example problems. Would highly recommend taking his course.
He is a decent, polite and powerful man meaning he can always make mathematical formulas easy to understand.
Daniel was the absolute best! He is so so so so so good at teaching 222, which is generally considered to be a weeder course here at UW Madison. As long as you go to lecture, it's not super difficult. Use the practice past exams!! Discussion hardly matters though. Only criticism is he doesn't tell you which section you're on in lecture.
He was the absolute best prof for 222. While my friends struggled through it with other professors, Daniel's lectures made it so I barely even had to use the textbook to understand the course work and succeed in the class. HIGHLY recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance
Erman is a hilarious professor. You should take MATH222 with him
don't take calc 2 without erman if you can help it trust the rating he will make this class 100% easier and you'll actually understand the logic behind the math very fun to learn from
amazing! loved him. so informative and many ways to learn
If you have the chance to take 222 with Erman, do it! Great lectures, very easy to understand, and very organized. Would 100% recommend!
I took MATH222 with him last fall and I realize that he will be the best professor I'll ever have. I became a math major because of him (I inevitably dropped out after I realized not everybody is as good at explaining concepts as he is). He is perfect. He's funny, caring, and clearly, extremely intelligent. Everybody could pass calculus with him.
Erman is seriously the best professor I've had at this school. He cares about his students and the subject and his passion rubs off on you. Exams were extremely fair and he gave specific practice problems so you knew what to expect. Funny, caring, responsive to emails and in office hours, the list goes on. Take a class with this guy if you can!!
