The man is so, so boring, it's hard to stay awake in class. Tests are hard.
will talk forever...
He's just a really great guy, take him.
a fair teacher, good grading policy, but extremely boring
Nicest guy ever!! many think he's boring, but he has the best sense of humor!
Loves what he does - sometimes boring, but it's the subject matter, not him
boring, but good teacher, good sense of humor, nice guy
really unstructured classs--only a few students attend the miandering lectures.
He is a weird guy, worte his own book for class, confussing
class is really boring, but you gotta love his weirdness;not tough on attendance
No Comments
boring, but not strict on attendance, awesome grading policy, not too hard
He's a sweet, old guy who rambles a lot. The class is boring but easy.
Boring, you will struggle to stay awake
nice guy. weird sense of humor. not strict on attendance. easy grade.
you never have to go to class! flage is the shiznit!!!
great sense of humor, loves what he does...take him if you can
Mat. was very hard, but helps if you ask him; very approachable and friendly!
I loved having Flage, he was boring, but if you had questions he made it easier, sit in the front, it's easier to stay awake and hear him
really nice guy... very boring and random lectures... very willing to help
Never have to go to class. Cool way to calculate final grade. Sometimes I fight to stay awake, though
flage has lot's of jokes that he snickers at just so that you will know he's trying to be funny...very cute and sweet man...class is so boring--have fallen asleep...attendance isn't mandatory, but he will have a pop quiz --writing down your name
does homework in class, attendance isnt mandatory but there are pop quizzes, open book and notes for tests
Such a sweet man! Pop quizzes consist of writing your name on a piece of paper and you get a hundred. He hates grading, so he goes over homework in class so everyone gets a hundred. Great way of grading! Laugh at his jokes and he'll love you!
Makes wierd slurping noises. Big goofy ears. Secretly farts in class. Waddles a bit. Oddly shaped body. Nice guy though. Watch out for oral spray.
I love Flage...he is so helpful and knowledgeable. He met me once at 10:30 at night to discuss a paper I was writing. He lives for philosophy and it shows. Don't sit in the front row!
Most boring and random man you can find. I got a 99 on the first test and a 78 on the second...hmmmm. He's overall pretty easy and VERY flexible.
Best class ever, even if you don't go . . . seriously skipped this class for three weeks straight, still got As on both of his papers. Funny guy, SO helpful - LOVES philosophy and will talk your ear off if you're willing to listen (or sleep).
This guy is awesome, always good for a laugh. Quizes just show up to class and sign a paper. No attendance policy, and grades easy. Take him!
Mr. Flage is the hottest professor at JMU. I don't care what anybody says.
if you practice the problems in his book and HW-you will be fine.i made As (100 & 93) on my tests via cramming.if i can do it,so can u. if u go to class, bring something productive to do(ie. pillow). class can be deathly boring. ^-^
nice guy but very boring teacher. i don't think his lectures made any sense but he'll basically do the homework for you.
If you have a choice, take another teacher. IT is not a hard class, but hard to get an A because the average grade on the final is a 70. Stuff on the final are things we never did in class. BAD CLASS
Flage is the man. His classes are helpful, I had 4 with him. Law school folks take phil 250 it really helps on LSAT. If you arent a major, still take him. Just to see his outlook on life and how happy he is makes anyones day. Take him to have fun and LEARN..its not cruise, but damn helpful!!
be warned: the standardized critical thinking test at the end of the semester has nothing on it that you learn all year. the class average was a 65 this semester. the final is a bit better though
He wears a fanny pack to class everyday. Tests are open book & notes. He likes to crack jokes in class even though he has a weird sense of humor. Nice guy. No attendance policy. Take this class for an easy A.
He enjoys teaching, he just comes off a bit odd. He is definitely worth taking, and does not want to see anyone do bad. He has different grading systems, so an A on the final can give you an A overall. It is also worth to do work outside of class as he suggests, it really is the only way to understand the concepts.
this class seems easy at first but you have to keep up with the homework and notes in order to do well in the end. he is kinda boring but tries to be funny so you let it slide.
Thought this class would be an easy A n it was at first but then it got confusing! Tests are open book/notes!! Quizzes are fantastic!!
Classic on-line joke class.
If I were you I would not take this class, just a warning! He does not care about your grade and he does not want to help you at all! He wrote the text book and it seems to be in another language. Take another professor for this class.
Took it online, can take tests twice and best grade counts, waited till the last two weeks and got a B with very little effort and not reading the book (use the first test as your study guide)
He's funny, helpful, a little out there...but overall it was an alright class. He loves to joke, plus he wrote the textbook. Brings in movies and movie clips. I recommend him.
THIS IS NOT A JOKE CLASS. it is very confussing, dont take it online, take it in lecture.
If you enjoy long boring strolls through dry readings of otherwise interesting philosophers by a washed up professor, then here is your class!
Take the online class, it's a breeze. You can finish it in about a week with an A...seriously. If you can read then you;ll get an A as well. There are a bunch of easy tests and he even drops a bunch of them to make you look better. EASY!
Its an Online Class.. and he still drops grades! Need I say anything else? If you don't get an A you should probly rethink this whole college thing..

Do not take this class! I thought it would be an easy A, but it is way harder than it should be! He even confuses himself sometimes, that's how ridiculous the material is. I would take it online if I could do it again...
Class is a joke. So confusing but EASY. He posts HW answers on BB before they are due and then he grades it!!! It is impossible to understand anything but if you just need to fill the gened credit take him. he drops lowest HW, quiz and test. final isn't mandatory. you can miss most classes and just show up to turn stuff in.
Always go on Fridays. Ask for pop quizzes if not many people showed up and you'll get a good quiz grade. His grading scale rocks... but you actually have to do well on things- it is NOT an easy A! He grew on me over the course of the semester... I'll miss the bad jokes, the "well look"'s, and hateful argument trees!
The class is really confusing and not much fun but Flage is awesome. He'll grow on you over the course of the semester. If you have to take this class to fill the GenEd credit, take it with him.
Like others say, he grows on you. An extremely smart man who happens to be very dry and boring in lecture. However, one-on-one he is amiable and has a certain charm about him. Don't go out of your way to take him, but if you have to, don't dismay, just bring some coffee so you don't fall asleep.
He wears a fanny pack to class every day, it's awesome!
crazy but funny. class isnt too hard and kinda goes by quick. prepare for the fanny pack and strange words.
Great professor. Last test is impossible.
The material in the class is no fun at all but if you have to take it to fill a GenEd, then you really should take it with him. Hes not a tough grader, he goes over the material, and he is always willing to help you. Not to mention the awesome fanny pack!
Took it online. Pretty hard but, except for the final, you get to take each test twice. He also drops the lowest test grade, which will most definitely be the final considering it's pretty impossible. I'd save the very first test you take, Module 0. It's either the same test as the final or very similar. I got a B+ and read each chapter carefully!
Nice guy. Helpful. The most boring professor I've ever had, though. He drones and the class really isn't any fun at all. Lectures are pretty much straight from the powerpoints, which he posts online. If you're a Phil major and need this class, you'll learn something. If you just need it for your BA and don't care about philosophy, stay away.
Don't recommend taking it if you just need it for a BA. His lectures are pretty boring but go because the material is hard to learn on your own. He's a really cool guy to talk with in office hours, so don't be afraid to visit.
MOST BORING AND POINTLESS CLASS EVER but not that bad if you have to take for a gen ed. you wont learn anything from him but read the book and you will do fine. 3 tests and an optional final. some homework grades which he gives you all the answers to and a few suprise attendance grades. if you HAVE to take this class I recommend him
I just took his online class. Hardest class I have EVER taken. He only emailed us twice throughout the semester. The way he words his question makes absolutely no sense. I read the text VERY carefully and still got 60's on my tests. I hate this class and would highly recommend that no one take his class.
Just took his online class. Materials were not extremely hard but wording can be a little difficult. I finished the 8week summer course in just (the last) 5 days and got an 85%. Two tests per module and you keep the highest grade, not that hard. A good grasp of logical thinking a must though
The best professor I have had through out my college experience. He helped me so much when I was struggling. If he knows that you are trying in the class he will do anything to help you. It is not the easiest class, however I would take him to get through the gen eds. TAKE HIM!!!
I took this class online and it was NOT what I expected. This was the HARDEST online class I've ever taken and it's a GenEd class. His test were difficult and frustrating to understand due to his tricky wording and I read the chapters twice and still didn't do well. Would recommend you NOT to take this class with him online if all possible.
Flage is the man. Most people probably think hes boring but hes interesting. He likes to recite poems. He can be hard to understand at times. but he goes over the homework in class right before you turn it in so its impossible to get them wrong. You dont need to go to class but id advise it later in the semester as it gets hard in the end
Dr. Flage is a nice guy and grows on you. His class is easy because he goes over most of the answers on the homework and tests are open note, open book. The material isn't easy and lectures can be boring. If you visit him he will be sitting outside of his office building smoking on his pipe. He is helpful, not to hard, take him for gen ed req.
Flage is a character. He reads right from the book, which he wrote. He cracks jokes and sometimes can be very entertaining. Everything is open book and open notes but test are HARD. If you pay attention and do a little studying you'll do fine.
This class is so boring that I can sit there and not hear anything for the full hour. Attending lectures is mournfully unnecessary; there are 3 assignments for the whole semester, so all you need is the due dates. I couldn't imagine more dull of a class. Not an exaggeration to say it's not unusual for 5 students out of 25 attend a particular class.
DO NOT TAKE. I HATED EVERY MINUTE OF MY LIFE BEING IN THIS CLASS. I felt like ripping out my hair while taking this class because the material is so confusing. I took it online and the teacher is very cool but the material is so hard.
The class is tough, but he is fantastic, very helpful, goes above and beyond to ensure you understand the material. I would highly recomend this professor.
Easy A. Professor Flage has an interesting sense of humor. First impression of class is boring and pointless. Sit near the front and actually listen to him, and you'll find yourself laughing. Read the textbook, then you wont have to pay attention in class. He wrote his own textbook, chapters and short and to the point. Slept all semester, got an A
Flage's class is a breeze. He doesn't take attendance, so you never have to show. You can just read the textbook and take the tests and get a B easily. A little bit more effort gets an A. He seems boring but is quite a funny character and has these really random asides that make class interesting. Take him.
This class is so boring. He wrote the text book so everything he lectures about is straight from the book. Every test is open note/open book and he drops your lowest quiz/homework grade so that is a plus. Class isn't interesting but an easy Gened course.
Today I was sitting in the front of this class and paying attention for once. Prof Flage is rambling on about the exercise like always and slobber drips out of his mouth and onto his stomach. Literally 2 minutes later he finally chokes on his saliva and wipes his face of the slobber. Needless to say, take this class.
Dan is hilarious. He drools and farts through out the class. Normally lets us out early and doesn't care whether you show up or not. The material is super easy. I'd take him if I were you.
Easy class, can get super boring though especially if you take it in the afternoon. Everything is open book/open note. HOWEVER, the final was completely out of the blue and didn't cover anything we talked about all semester. Dr. Flage is funny though, so take his class.
Professor Flage is an extremely nice man. Attendance is not mandatory since all power points are online, but going to class does help with papers. Professor Flage is very willing to help with understanding of all readings as well as helping with paper topics. Good course
Extremely boring class. lectures were completely useless.I would have to teach myself the material after class. His final had a lot of things we never covered on it! very disappointed in the class. He made a relatively easy class seem impossible. So many awkward silences in class when he would wait for an answer nobody knew, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He's got an odd sense of humor and only reads examples from the book during class but it was SO easy. You don't have to come to class but he does check who showed up on fridays by having everyone sign a paper. Everything is open book/notes. TAKE!
EASY. Class was extremely boring and I rarely went because he repeats everything in the textbook (which he wrote). I read the book and did a ton of practice problems before each test and got A's. There are only 2 tests and a final, along with homeworks due every few weeks. If you want to learn, do not take this class. If you want an A, take it.
Flage is a very sweet person, but lectures are incredibly dull because the subject material is very dry. Its an easy class that requires very little work. Youll need the book to go over problems in class but the readings really aren't necessary because he goes over everything. Take clear notes though because the second test is open note. Boring.
If you cannot handle someone having a runny nose and snorting it back in their head DO NOT TAKE it is constant! he wrote the textbook and it is your only hope in this class. Starts off very easy and gives you help then all of a sudden cuts you off and expects you to know how to do everything on your own. Not terrible but be ready to teach yourself.
Flage is actually a pretty funny guy, but this class was insanely boring. He wrote the textbook for the class, so all the lectures are literally straight out of the book. Concepts aren't too hard if you do a little practice here & there. Tests are open book, but you still need to have an idea of what you're doing or you won't finish in time.
Professor Flage is a great guy, really funny and willing to help you if you ask. His lectures can be a bit dry and his tests are much harder than what he teaches, but he's a nice man. He wrote the textbook, so if you study from that and do the exercises in it, you don't have to go to every class.
He's a really boring lecturer, but hilarious guy. I definitely recommend going to office hours because the material is very confusing. Once you get it though, the actual questions on tests are super easy to do. It's pretty easy to get a B or A as long as you do practice tests and go to office hours.
Brilliant dude. He is ancient and brilliant. He is the epitome of a bizzare old genius philopsoher... Class might be hard if not interested in phil, otherwise very easy A.
The class is not very difficult and he's a really fair grader. He only counts homework if it helps you, and he only counts tests if it helps you. The only thing that always counts is the final. He is hilarious! He doesn't move on to new material in someone does not understand. I love him. I wish I could take every class from him.
Daniel Flage is a cute old man who is very passionate about philosophy/critical thinking. He wrote the textbook for the class so there are no discretencies. Sometimes he gets off track but he's very considerate and open minded about things such as due dates. He's very funny but sometimes this course is a bit confusing and he doesn't always fix that
His class is hard and he wrote the textbook so he flies through the material. He tries to make the subject more interesting than it really is by adding in some humor. Overall good professor, just depends on how well you can understand the material as a whole.
Flage was a great guy, but an awful professor in my opinion. His lectures were not clear at all. He would trail off of subject and stop talking mid sentence. I honestly could not pay attention in that class. He taught class sitting down with a very monotoned voice. His homework is easy, but the tests are nothing like the homework.
Dr. Flage is absolutely brilliant. I was in awe of his knowledge every time I went to class. However, I had a very difficult time keeping up with the lectures because they were so complicated. He does understand that students struggle with the material and is not super harsh when grading. Attendance is not mandatory at all.
I thought this class was going to be pretty easy as he was the best option for taking phil 120, however; this was the hardest class I had, I would recommend a different teacher, as he's confusing and doesn't really explain things well or at all
Flage is funny and easy to understand. Philosophy is a tough subject for many people and he does as much as he can to get you to pass. go to his office hours he will talk to you about literally anything.
Flage is a really funny guy, but is terrible at explaining things. He gets confused in class, and corrects himself often. He teaches straight from the book that he wrote, but doesn't teach so much as just go over the answers to the problem in the book.
Flage is such a sweet old man and really funny. But he's just not a good professor. The subject matter is hard as it is and he is really bad at organizing/conveying information clearly. He might be fine in other classes but this is not the class he should be teaching.
Flage is the sweetest old man I've ever met in my entire life. You can tell he really cares about his students. All his tests are open note/open book, which really helps. The only thing is his lectures are very confusing and disorganized and the textbook is kind of hard to understand, but as long as you have the book for tests, you'll pass!!!
Doc Flage is an adorable man who loves to crack sarcastic jokes, but he isnt the best at explaining the criteria and does not post homework or due dates on canvas. Attendance is optional but its very hard to understand whats going on and when things are do if you skip class. Not the best GenEd, but it was manageable. Be prepared to teach yourself
Love Flage, but wouldn't recommend taking Symbolic Logic unless its required because it is extremely difficult. However, Flage really is a sweetheart and works hard to make sure everybody understand the material. He holds review sessions that are really helpful and moves at a slow pace in class. He lectures directly out the textbook he authored.
his lectures are so hard to follow. most of the time I didn't know what was going on. super nice and funny guy but didn't learn much in this class and getting a good grade was not easy
He is a very educated man that is passionate about Philosophy. He wrote the textbook, so his class literally consists of going over the exercise portions of every chapter. The material is very tough. Even though attendance is not mandatory, if you miss one day of class you will be lost. POP QUIZZES. Tests are very difficult. He gives handouts.
Online quizzes on Canvas are not part of final grade. He has no idea how to use canvas so grades from the quizzes will be posted and boost your grade until the day of the final exam. READ THE SYLLABUS FOR FINAL GRADE OVERVIEW! He takes an average of either your 3 test grades and assignments, just your 3 tests, or your final exam only as your grade.
Took two courses from Prof. Flage at UT in 1993-5. Was a wonderful teacher and mentor. Was a Philosophy major and when I was applying to med school, he wrote he a nice letter and gave me a signed book. I will always remember his lessons and his kindness. He is a special person and great teacher
If you actually do the assignments outside of class, this is a pretty easy A. All tests are open book/notes, but they're useless if you don't understand what's going on. Lectures directly from the book, but I'm not sure how else he could better teach this class. Ask questions, do proofs, you're golden.
He's really enthusiastic and really wants students to excel. His first test is easy but the course gets significantly harder after the first test. Don't skip the first class after the test otherwise you will get behind.
I liked the class at first but it gets exponentially harder after test #1. He taught us 2 ways to do the same problem which was helpful but took points off for doing it one of the methods HE TAUGHT. If had given those points that I deserved I would have gotten an A.
Love his symbolic logic courses and the textbook
Get ready to teach yourself another language, literally. Flage is the worst teacher. All he does is go over practice problems that he doesn't teach you HOW to do in the first place. Exams are impossible but open notes. Oh, and the textbook that is used in class everyday, he wrote it.
This class was pretty easy but boring due to the lecture. You learn about a couple philosophers and read their work. The lecture is posted online so only about half of the class showed up each day. There's no homework; you're graded on 3 essays based off of the readings. Overall I would recommend this class if you're good at writing!
I literally stopped showing up for class in January, showed up for the final, and got an A. Flage has three methods of grading and choosing the highest for each individual student: just the final, the final and tests, the final and tests and homework. Very boring class if you can think logically; super easy.
Sweetest man ever! Absolutely adore him as my online prof for phil120. This course is the toughest course I have EVER taken. But, it is online &all based on tests so it is not his fault. You may call him and receive help. So beyond kind. If you really spend time learning the material before each test you will receive an A. Easy A but time consuming
