Mr.Fowler is a really nice guy. He tends to move slow which can be nice, but this screws everyone over when he crams the last 4 topics in right before finals. The textbook was way more helpful than the lectures. His class has 4 tests and a final.
Fowler is a good teacher, but goes incredibly slow through material in the beginning of the semester, then at rapid speed towards the end of the semester to get all of the material in. Not difficult to pass if you study and do all homework and extra credit. Also drops lowest exam grade for final exam.
After comparing tests with other classes, I was so lucky to have had him. He gives helpful practice exams. He tries his best to make lectures interesting by doing demonstrations (rare but he did sometimes). He does NOT curve BUT he does give an extra credit assignment before the test, similar to a homework assignment. Admits to mistakes on test.
Very understanding professor. He is VERY kind in emails and office hours. Although he always wears a mask (no problem with that), it's difficult notice if he's joking lol. He grades top hat questions based on accuracy and participation. 50% if wrong. TIP: look up NCSU gen chem on YouTube, you'll find Petrovich lectures. on there, VERY similar.
Cool professor. Was very reasonable regarding HW and tests; pushed back HW deadlines if needed. He went really slowly in the beginning and towards the end, he had to record online lecture videos we had to watch out of class (he was also new to NCSU, so I think he just needed to get adjusted to the timings and how long a semester is).
If you like me and don't already understand chemistry, do not take this mf. I stg the number of times I have been lost in class and have no idea what's happening cause he moves so fast. The tests are hard asf, and he is not approachable at all. Bro internally hates to see students be successful.
Do not take this professor. I have been so lost during his lectures it's not even funny. If you thought you could potentially learn from his slideshow presentation, you won't. I have rewatched lectures multiple times and still not understanding the concepts as he goes through them quickly and briefly.
Fowler is very kind in office hours. Only 3 tests and a final and if you score better on your final than one of your tests, he replaces the score with your final. He always pushed back hw because of how slow he went in the beginning. His tests are very fair as he definitely could make his tests harder but he doesn't. no curve on tests but offers ec
I recommend taking notes on the slides and doing the top hat questions before class if you can't keep up during class which is what I did. He does give extra credit for exams and post review materials for it. He also pushes back homework dates if not everything was covered in class yet, but there's still a lot of homework.
Professor Fowler is not good at teaching Chemistry 101. He makes you sit in his lectures while he speeds through concepts. He doesn't have a curve and his tests questions aren't similar to the practice tests.
I thought Dr. Fowler was super nice and an ok Lecturer. I hated the top hat in class that was graded based on accuracy. We were always behind. However, he offers extra credit on tests and his tests are fair and straightforward. I had to watch NCSU Gen Chem videos to get the best results. My test scores were 86, 84, 89, and 90 on the final.
Although exams are not curved, extra credit (4-6 points) is available. 3 exams are 40% of grade, and the final is 30%. As a lecturer, he is kind of slow, but if you like things explained very thoroughly, he is good.
Pretty mid. We got way behind other sections and made lab harder because we hadn't learned the material yet. He did have an extra credit practice test for all tests except the final which gave 4-6 points towards test. Rushed content at the end of semester. Test 2 had way more content then other 2. Lecture tophat graded 50% on accuracy.
Professor Fowler is a very kind and understand teacher, often pushing homework due dates back and offering extra credit on tests. He also goes very in depth on topics (at least he did at the beginning of the year). My main complaint is that he went super slow and we often got behind on content which was detrimental to my understanding of the lab.
Dr. Fowler is a decent chemistry professor. Having taken AP Chem in high school, I often thought he overcomplicated topics and his lecture slides were sometimes confusing. My section was also behind and we ended up skipping a unit, but I am sure his pacing will get better as this was his first semester. HW on Webassign was helpful for tests.
Fowler is an Okay teacher. Ill give him the benefit of the doubt because its his first semester at NC state but his pacing throughout the year was wack. His lectures go very in depth on the material which is unnecessary and makes his lectures so confusing. He gives questions through tophat which are graded and gives some extra credit for tests.
I took AP Chemistry in high school and already felt good about chemistry, and I had a good experience in this class. Dr. Fowler's lectures are sometimes complicated, as he goes into topics very in-depth. I would recommend reviewing the textbook and doing practice problems in it. Dr. Fowler is also caring and sets clear grading guidelines.
Fowler is a solid choice for CH101. He responds to emails very quickly and is always willing to help in office hours. In lecture, he can get a little confusing and sometimes complicates things more than they need to be though. His tests are very fair; review the HW and textbook. Had three tests (13.33% of grade), final worth (30%), HW (15%), etc.
Fowler's lectures are very boring so it is hard to pay attention. In the beginning of the semester, he went very slow on very easy topics which caused us to go very fast and speed through the rest of the material in the last 2 weeks of the semester. We did almost 1 chapter a class period (had the long class periods that met twice a week).
It is clear that Dr. Fowler since this was his first semester at NC State, sorely misunderstood the time it would take to cover the content. At one point in the semester we were a month behind in lectures. This resulted in a hectic scramble near the end. Learn content outside class, attend lecture, attend SI sessions, and do practice exams always.
I seriously did not like his class. Honestly, it would've been better asynchronous and to have it all online because sweet jesus his lectures sucked.
Dr. Fowler was very nice. Lots of homework and tests. Make sure to learn how to study for this class or else you will definitely have a much lower grade. I would also definitely attend office hours. He is kind and patient during office hours and will actually help you understand the material. But you will definitely have to work hard in this class.
He's decent. His way of teaching is just reading off of his slides. He does a lot of tophats in class and when there is math involved he barely gives time to solve them. His tests reflect his practice tests which is very helpful.
I have taken a CH 101 equivalent and done way better than I did in Prof. Fowler's class. He isn't a bad professor, his style just wasn't successful for my learning. It was also his first semester at State, so I doubt this reflects on him too much. The worst part is that his tests are multiple choice, so no opportunity for partial credit.
Dr. Fowler very much cares about his students doing well in CH101 and it hurts to see...He tries VERY hard to encourage students to utilize their resources to do better but instead students do worse. He is a good professor and the class isn't very difficult, just the fate of the CH101 weed-out.
Professor Fowler is great! He is very responsive to emails outside of class, and keeps you updated on office hour time changes. I would say make sure you attend class to listen to lectures and participate so you can grasp the material.
Dr.Fowler is a very kind professor and cares about your well being. However, his teaching strategy is reading off of the slides and he can never finish the lecture in time, he constantly pushes back HW dates and class is overall behind. He does not allow test retakes and you must provide university excused absences for everything.Take someone else.
Nice professor, but confusing. It was his first year teaching here so I understand he's trying to get a grasp on teaching, but he never finishes his lectures on time, and tests creep up on you. He's ok, would take again if I had to.
He seems to not understand how to communicate to his students in a respectable manner or consider us as adults. I feel as though I was spoken to like a child rather than an adult. When reached out to about a certain issue he would not consider my side of the issue. He was not understanding at all and would not take my explanation.
Excellent professor! My semester just ended with him, and I thought of checking rmp on him. Surprisingly, it was not what I expected. I liked the professor! His lecture had a lot of examples & material was presented well-structured. He did have a lot of HW and in-class questions, but it was a boon for me as I got to practice. Take him for sure!
Dr. Fowler is a great professor. Lecture can be boring, but the exams match the HW, lectures, he gives practice tests and extra credit. One of the better NCSU Chem professors. Don't listen to the negative reviews. If you show up to class, do your HW and study for the 25 question MCQ exams, you will do perfectly fine. He makes chem understandable.
Dr. Fowler is a good lecturer, makes due dates very clear, tells you where to find supplemental resources, gives up to 5 points extra credit on all exams besides the final, and is quick in responding to emails. His one big flaw IMO is the fact that he is a bit too thorough in his lectures, causing the class to get increasingly behind over time.
Good professor; he responded to emails quickly. Reviewing the homework + practice exams are crucial to doing well on the exams/final. You could earn up to 4 points of extra credit per exam. However, the sheets we got during problem sessions weren't that helpful IMO. Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He really does want to help!
Average lecturer. Reads straight from the slides. Class grading is easy. The homework is in web-assign and is not bad. Tests are much easier than than what is discussed in class. 4 multiple choice tests 10% each with extra credit web-assigns before each one along with a practice test being posted. He also replaces lowest test grade w final.
This class was the first B I ever received. The first two tests were fine, and after that, it went downhill. His lectures are not always the most effective, and he typically only accepts questions after class. The homework is reasonable, attendance is easy, and the tests are reasonable but still hard. This is def not a class to get behind in.
Overall, Fowler was not a bad teacher but he was very straightforward with his material. However, he sometimes gets way too in-depth with some of the topics and it can be very confusing at times. He gives plenty of hw so do not fall behind. 4 mc exams and a final. Gives practice test and problem sessions werent really helpful but required.
Dr. Fowler was very disorganized with the lab work. The labs we did were not at all lined up with what we learned in our lectures. In addition, my lab partner who had him for lecture stated that his lecture was behind everyone else by 2 weeks. Considering he ran the labs, his lectures should be on pace with the lab work. Miserable class (lab). -HY
His lectures are recorded and posted so you can view them at your leisure. Tests are really easy- just study hw, tophat Qs, extra credit, and prac tests. Background chem knowledge isn't really necessary- He teaches everything starting from the basics. He responds to emails really fast and is understanding if you need to miss class.
Clear and fair professor. Long lectures where participation counted for a grade on TopHat. Lots of homework on WebAssign.
Dr. Fowler's labs were very disorganized and he expected us to figure everything out on our own. The labs were on topics not covered in class and Dr. Fowler was not accessible. All of the assignments were graded online in a way that you couldn't see what you go wrong. The TAs were very unhelpful and you, were given no information at all.
I would not recommend this professor for CH201. I have taken Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 and this class should not be more difficult, but it is. The homework is super time consuming and 1 question out of ~15 can take upwards of 30 minutes to complete. The lectures are a waste of time as all he does is read the slides (which are super disorganized).
The only complaints I have is how time consuming the homework is and how difficult the exams are. But, Dr. Fowler did replace the lowest test grade with your final grade if it was higher which helps. Attendance points and homework are also a big portion of your grade. If you participate, you should be fine.
His lectures are content heavy and hard to sit through. The homework is also very time consuming, with one question taking up to 30 minutes alone. The exams are also impossible as they do not resemble any of the homework or practice exams he provides.
Bruh... that is the perfect word to describe how you feel every time this man opens his mouth. Just nonsense, both in his lectures, and his exams. I've done well but only because I stopped going to classes. Just a waste.
(CH 201 Review) So I think he said it was first time teaching this course, and honestly it's not bad. He reads off of slides, but he also works the problems in class and is easier to understand than the textbook. He does go fast though. The math is pretty much just formulas, but if you don't like chemistry it's roughhh
The worst class I have taken at state so far. He forces you to sit through lectures where he reads numbers off his slides that are hectic and crowded making it impossible to keep up. Combine this with a fast pace and refusal to revisit past slides when asked in class. The homeworks are also near impossible taking hours at a time. Don't take him.
prof fowler is nice but a horrible teacher. u can tell he knows what he's talking about but he can't explain it to save his life. the tests are not like the practice tests, and the homework is hard and time-consuming. his lectures are boring and again very little help due to his inability to explain things. I would advise picking another prof.
Dr. Fowler is a great professor and knows a lot about chemistry despite this being his first Quant chem course that he taught. He worked with us to improve his tests and gave extra credit in the form of extra problems not finished in class and worksheets to study for the test. Overall great professor and I would recommend taking him if you can.
(Ch 201 Review!!) Don't let my grade fool you... I took AP chem in HS and studied too much. His lectures are so boring, but he uses tophat so you have to go. He is not that bad and hw/participation can outweigh bad grades (+ a grade replacement), but he uses the other prof's resources. Tests are hard and all free response but partial credit!
(For CH 201) This class can be really tough if math isn't your strong suit. Fowler was fair being it was his first time teaching chem 2. He recognized our first test was unfair and gave us extra credit, and the other tests were a lot better. Top hats in his class are apart of your grade and in my opinion they were definitely the best study tool.
(CH201!!!) The TopHat participation helped, but if you missed here and there, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Homework was easy as well. I showed up and played Tetris and still got an A+ lol. However, I also took it seriously. The tests were similar to the problems worked out during class, and he provided many resources to prepare for exams.
Lectures pretty dry and boring, but that is the only flaw. In terms of a learning standpoint, I felt I learned a lot in his class as he was a good chemistry teacher.
Chem lab is not fun at all. Not learning anything just cramming work into a short period of time. Never met him though just the TA.
Dr. Fowler is the director of Chem Labs. The main problem with these CH102 labs is that they do not align with the material covered in CH101 lectures. The result is that one struggles to understand what is going on in the lab and does not get nearly as much out of it as one could. This proved very frustrating throughout the semester.
The CH102 labs are ahead of the lectures. So you have to make guesses since you don't really know what's going on yet. Your lab TA will be a hit or miss. You do get multiple chances on a question, but it's still hard because you get 3 or 2 chances max and do not know how to do the material. The final exam is also hard.
Great chemistry instructor! The course can be a bit much and boring, but he teaches it well. He often extends homework deadlines and offers extra credit for every exam. Exams are easy if you study, and he provides last semester's exam, which closely matches the one you'll take.
Nothing but great things to say about my boy fowler. Easy class, lowkey too easy. So much extra credit. Occasionally very funny. Nice guy outside of class too. Great guy, Great class.
Professor Fowler loves Chemistry. His lectures, though he reads from the slides, are engaging. He teaches well, and his tests aren't hard. He made Chemistry tangible and relatable. He cracks jokes, and I enjoyed his CH101 class a lot. To succeed, take good notes in lectures, study the practice tests, and pay attention. He's a good professor.
CH102 is a hard class. Labs 1-8 are fine but the later labs cover units in CH101 that are taught later leading to no knowledge on all of the topics tested. I was rushing to finish the in lab assignments on time and always finished with less than a minute to spare. The final is not worth that much but is not that hard leading to a slight boost.
Fowler the goat
Dr. Fowler's class is probably your best bet at learning chemistry going into college. His lectures are easy to follow, and he makes tough concepts easy to understand. Offline, he is very responsive, which is impressive given the large class sizes. Above all, he wants to see his students succeed.
Good professor, just a lot of content to learn. Gives a practice exam for each test even the final. If you know and understand those then you will pass the tests easily. Pay attention in class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Fowler was a great professor who made chemistry enjoyable. He gave extra credit on all his exams and let the final exam replace your lowest exam grade. His exams were not difficult and he gave multiple resources to help you study and prepare for them.
Fowler is genuinely a super nice guy. You can tell he wants his students to do well. He's accessible outside of class and is willing to grant extensions on hw if you really need it. However, he does talk pretty fast in lectures and still expects you to gather all of the information. There's a lot of hw assignments (~2 a week) but they're not bad.
Dr. Fowler gives a lot of resources to help students and I feel like he really cares about them doing well. I am not the best at chemistry but the practice exams were nearly identical to actual exams. Two homework assignments a week. Moves extremely fast in lectures, I don't think I learned hardly anything from listening to him during class time.
Dr. Fowler is a great guy who does want the best for you and gives you resources. His lectures are very fast paced and presentations can be very confusing, as something's I had to teach myself. He will answer your questions and will help you! To help you out, look at the presentations beforehand and take some notes, do homework ahead of time
Dr.Fowler ensures you succeed by giving you ample ways to practice. He does go very fast during the lecture and it's hard to learn, I've had to teach something's myself. He has lots of resources for your success, like office hours and beyond that. You can help yourself by looking at the slides beforehand, writing notes, and going to office hours.
Dr.Fowler's content is harder than other teachers, but he is a great teacher & really helps you understand. He also values his student's grades & will replace their lowest of 4 test grades with the final & drop lowest hw. He gives so much extra aid for hard content. He does not give out curves but if you put in the effort you shouldn't need them.
Very good professor considering he teaches 300 something students in large lecture. Lecture was concise and useful. Take notes, review them, and do the homework.
*For Ch201. Great Chem 101 professor. However, as a Chem 201 professor, he is completely different test/homework wise. The tests are very difficult and have insufficient time to complete all the questions unless you rush. The tests cover so much material, and you only have 3 unlike other CH201 classes with 4. Very unempathetic.
whole lot of HW, but he gave extra credit for every test so it is very easy to receive a good grade.
Lectured extremely fast and covered so much material I didn't even know where we were. I took this a year ago so maybe it is better now. But he is very kind and considerate, just a hard course and his lectures were not great.
Dr. Fowler is a good professor, his lecture notes include everything you need to know. He also works through example problems in class. The tests aren't too hard, especially if you keep up with homework and do all the practice exams. The one thing is that he goes over time, but it's not a big issue. Also very accessible for office hours!
Tips for ch 201: test 1 is the hardest, u have to study A LOt to receive a good grade. To study, do the practice tests at least twice and redo all webassign homework problems. Go to office hours to ask for help w homework. In class, i would recommend writing your own notes the night before or just downloading dr fowler slides
Pros: Dr Fowler has great office hours…use them when needing help w homework and other content. Gives extra credit when students bomb tests. Extra credit @ end of year. Final replaces lowest test grade. Gives lots of extra attendance points. Cons: Lectures are veryyy boring and w a lot of material and the slides are uninteresting to look at.
Genuinely a good guy, you can tell he really wants his students to do well, offers help and provides resources along with extra credit on every test, hw is not bad at all. He responds quickly as well which is impressive based on how big his classes are. Practice exams given for every test which are similar to the real one. Deffff recommend
(CH201 2024 Review). Had him for CH101 (overall good), so decided to take him for CH201.1st time teaching CH201. Tests were harder than expected (median for 1st and 3rd test were 61.75 and 65 respectively). Nice in office hours and replies fast to emails, but can get confusing in lecture. Hard class in general if math is not your strong suit.
I loved Dr. Fowler!! The material can get confusing, but I really liked going back and watching his recorded lectures because he explains things well and makes good analogies. Tests are exactly like the practice exams and the homework problems. He gives you SO many resources to do well and he has office hours twice a week.
He uses TopHat for his lectures. Exams have the same topics shown in the practice exams. Study by practicing practice exams and homework.
His lectures are alright, but the study guides are exactly what you need for the exam. Cool guy
Dr. Fowlers lectures felt very rushed, I would fall behind very easily. However compared to other teachers, the way his midterms are weighted, didn't bring my grade down at all even after BOMBING a midterm. Ending with an A with two out of four midterms being below 70 is crazy.
Daniel is awesome he does everything he can to make the class easy and cares about his students. Take him hes great at explaining and telling you exactly what will be on tests.
You cannot miss a day in this lab, if you do, your grade will tank. However, the good news is that your final is worth 8% of your grade, so you can go in, get a 50%, and leave with an A.
Chem is boring but Fowler makes it fairly entertaining and digestible. 300ish people in a lecture hall isn't the best way to learn but recitation and SI sessions make it more personal if that's something you need. Bonus that he runs the labs but unfortunately the timing of the covered topics don't align. Be aware he does use TopHat for attendance.
Instructors vary. Attendance required, with HW being pre & post labs due before and after. The in-class lab is due by the end, and WebAssign was difficult to use, so we'd rush or ask around. Lab and lecture didn't align, and near the end we did labs on topics not yet taught. Those topics were on the final, but lab is 8% of the grade, so it's fine.
his slides are helpful and lectures are very info heavy but he seems like he genuinely cares about students. the practice material is accurate to exams which i appreciate, overall great professor
Fowler is a great professor! He genuinely cares about the success of his students. Tests are exactly like the practice tests and his lectures are very helpful. You get the opportunity to get 4 extra credit points on every exam and the pace of the class is perfect. Highly recommend Dr. Fowler!
Dr. Fowler is great! He has a lot of personality and makes class enjoyable. His tests are very similar to the practice test which I really appreciate, and he gives students the opportunity to get up to 4 points extra credit on each exam.
Lectures are very well explained. I failed this class the first time I took it with a different professor, but he made things much easier to understand. He reminds me of my dad, he's super cool and sweet. Up to four points extra credit available for each exam and opportunities to make up attendance points from missed classes.
Dr. Fowler started out amazing. As the semester went on, though, he started to really speed up in class. It became impossible to take notes during lecture because he moved SO fast. I took notes before just so I could pay attention in class, which is the only reason I got an A. If you have Fowler TAKE NOTES BEFORE CLASS! Can't emphasize that enough!
He's a pretty decent professor. Tests are exactly like the practice exams he gives you so take advantage of that. We were always behind other classes so you end up rushing near the end. Try to stay ahead and you'll be fine.
I mean, he's a really decent chemistry professor. The only reason I got a B is because I did not take notes before lectures and did not bother to understand the homework. If you don't make the mistakes that I did, you will get an A. That said, his final is especially brutal. The median this year for my section was a 68%.
His exams are easy if you study the released exams. However, he is 2+ weeks behind the lab classes so be prepared to teach yourself the lab material. He is very helpful when you attend his office hours as well.
Dr. Fowler is a great professor and does an amazing job teaching the content. He does move a little fast so you may need to review the notes on your own. He has plenty of office hours and is very helpful during them. He also provides extra credit opportunities for the midterms. He also gives practice tests for each exam which are very helpful.
Dr. Fowler was a great professor and made CH 101 very understandable. His lectures were engaging, and he did a good job explaining the material. His exams were extremely similar to the practice Moodle exams he would send out before tests. Also, he gives you up to 4% worth of Extra Credit per midterm. If you can, take his class!!!
Dr. Fowler gives a lot of opportunities for success through extra credit on some tests and extra homework assignments for tests. You have to go to class. The material is way easier to follow if you go hear his explanations. He gives practice tests before each exam that are heavily similar to the real test.
