Dr. Gerber was a huge help for all of the information in this class, also he is a really nice and funny guy! I definetly recommend him!
comes off as kinda stupid. the class is harder than i thought and he's not very helpful.
Its easy to follow his lectures and he can help you after class if you need it....also his tests arn't as hard as i thought they would be.. Overall he's a really great guy and funny
His lectures were extremely boring but not a bad class overall. He's a pretty good professor i would have to say..just really boring.
Lectures are based off of powerpoints that he himself did not make so he tends to ramble and talk in circles...boring! His tests are harder than i was expecting. Not horrible but not recommended. He expects the class average to be a 75.
This guy is totally boring! He makes me want to puke....very boring lecture. I fell asleep in his class just about every day!
Very hard guy, he uses powerpoint that was mostly unhelpful diagrams and pictures. No notes, and expects one to hit the book hard. Was happy when our class score an average of 65% on our biology test. No assignments, no curves, no notes.
He is very boring and talks in circles! i had to have friends from other classes teach me the stuff cuz he didnt teach me anything. and the final had many irrelivant questions!!! who cares what the name of a book that someone wrote its not aconcept!
Have ppt slides, but maybe 1/10 slides are pixs and diagram. The students have to hit the wordy book really hard for exams. IF YOU WANT A HARD PROFESSOR, HE IS IT!!!!:(
Really nice guy and he lectures okay, but if you have him for lab, he's awesome!
Confusing at times. Alot of self study is needed. Hard tests and very little opportunity for extra credit. Sometime covers too much in one class. Smart teacher, tough class.
His lectures are all on powerpoint, which don't help much. You have to take A LOT of notes from what he says, which is sometimes hard to understand. VERY HARD exams with questions that are totally random and a lot of the time don't make sense.
he's very unhelpful and sometimes gives wrong information during his lecture. doesnt offer any advice for doing better on his exams and basically you'd be better off teaching yourself the material from the book!
Everyday in lecture I ask myself why I got out of bed to go sit through this extremely pointless class. He just reads off his powerpoint presentations, which you can access online anyways. I definitely do not recommend him.
Wow. Impossible tests, he picks minute details that shouldn't make a difference, and that's the bulk of the test. Thank Gold there was lab to save my grade. His lectures are boring and straight from the powerpoint (that is posted on the internet).
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! GET OUT NOW WHILE YOU CAN! He is so boring, and very unhelpful. Whatever you do, don't take him. His test are so hard and your grade is based on the test. WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!
Does not teach at a 105 level. I passed the final, and that's it. I only passed the class because I did so well in lab (I didn't have him). Do NOT take Dr. Gerber.
not a good teacher. knows his stuff but lectures are unorganized, missed 3-4 lectures a semester, doesn't seem to care at all
Completely unwilling to help any students. Poor teaching style. Doesn't use time efficiently to teach what needs to be learned on the test. Random/ poorly written test questions. He needs to get a clue. Forget studying it will only confuse you more.
THE GUY IS WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! His tests are unreasonable and he doesn't even hand them out after for you to see them!!! You will do better skipping his lecture and studying on your own. Expect a C, I don't know anyone doing better than that.
Gerber is a horrible professor! His lecture notes aren't even his so its not even worth it to get the notes. I agree that its hard to get much better than a BC in his class. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF POSSIBLE!
Tests are based nothing off of what is discussed in class.
He is not a good teacher. Very bad at answering questions and tends to speak above us. The test do not test the important things that we are learning. I feel like I know the information, but I don't do good on the tests. Take a different teacher!
What an awful man..
I think the class is pretty easy as long as you keep your own notes on things he says.
Although not a stimulating class I found i learned a lot that was useful later on. If you are able to listen and take good notes, it is just like any other class you'll take.
He's a funny guy. i didn't mind him except sometimes didn't really know what's going one but I liked him much better than the actual professor that was teaching the course.
he cant teach, he doesnt go over half the thgings in class that you see on the test so you get really confused. he isnt very helpful and his lectures are straight form the notes he gives you so you dont learn anything
This is an EVIL MAN!!! He doesn't answer your questions good enough and the wording on his tests are so confusing. He only gives out one extra credit assignment. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Find better!
class is boring and confusing, tests don't follow notes at all. if it wasn't for lab i would have failed the course! = BAD TEACHER
i hated the way he did his exams. the answers are always none of the above. it confused me.
I have to re-take this class - his tests are very hard. What he teaches in class is alot easier than the tests. I even used all of the online stuff and still did bad. The labs were the only good part of the class.
Nice guy but hard class. Take lots of notes cuz the tests are super hard. I've never studied so much before. Do the one extra credit in the beginning its helpful later on. Seriously read the chapters stuff is on the test. Its a lot of hard work!
I was worried at first when I saw the bad reviews, but Dr. Gerber was great! He is a fairly hard in 105 (92%=A), but that is the case in many Bio classes. Do take advantage of the extra credit, it helps a LOT! Plant Bio was actually INTERESTING! He does a great job in lab too. Take Dr. Gerber!
He didn't seem like he wanted to teach the class. If the prof doesn't care, it's a lot harder for the students. He focused way too much on plant stuff because that's his specialty. Gives horrible analogies and talks in circles. Not very good at explaining anything. Gave really tough tests.
Gerbs is awesome. Not the best 105 teacher because he doesn't like to deal w/all the idiots who think its so hard. Lower level if you like science, you'll be fine. Upper level, I'd say take him. He is beyond willing to help. Very clear. I think he is a very good prof, not great, but very good.
Dr. gerber is a helpful instructor. His tests are all multiple choice and are not that difficult. Study your notes and read-youll be fine. Plant bio was actually interesting.
I loved this class...maybe because I love trees and the outdoors but also Gerber ha to be one of the funniest professors on campus. This class has a field trip in northern Wisconsin but he really does make it enjoyable. With any other professor it would be horrible and you still learn a lot too. Highly reccomended for the nature lover.
Lecture is kind of boring. Not the most interesting class in the world however. Lecture is easier than lab, a lot of studying; don't take it if you don't have to!
His tests are a little tricky (every question has two of the options like of none of the above, all of the above, a and b, all except b, and so on) Teaches the material fairly good. Lab seems to be much harder than lecture.
he's so BORING! He gives the powerpoint slides to you before class so lecture is easy to follow & the concepts aren't that hard, but he spends way too much time on simple concepts. Lab is better, you get to apply everything from lecture.
I think if you are not interested in these type of classes then ofcourse it will be boring, but i think he really enjoys teaching and cares about his students.
He has a hard time explaining things in different ways. He doesnt seem like he wants to be there teaching the class, which makes it hard to want to learn yourself.
Hes a tough teacher. At first i felt that he wasnt going be expain everything very well, but towards then end of the semester he began to gow on me. If you need help, he always finds a way the help out, extremely friendly, and cares about his students.
Not a great test giver. His tests are tricky and he is no help. You can study hard, but if you don't study exactly what he is going to ask then your SOL. Oh, and he does NOT have a review sheet. Avoid for into bio class.
Obviously, if you're a bio major then you need this class. If not, then you should avoid it. He's a better lab teacher. Lecture is hard to follow because he does spend a lot of time going through the little things. His exams are HARD! A lot of critical thinking! Not straight up, define this or what is this. Too much "A & C" or NONE or ALL.
Gerbs is awesome! He teaches well and made the field trip a great experience. He gets a lot of bad reviews in lower bio classes because he actually expects you to learn something which is hard for students who haven't been challenged in classes yet.
Nice guy but avoids answering your questions. Quizzes at the end of each lab can be tough. Don't have to read the text at all.
pretty good at explaining things, but if you ask him something in lab, he will keep talking to you (about things you don't need to know). pretty easy going and likes to joke around in lab a little if you get to know him. exams are fairly easy if you study- don't let the multiple choice trip you up. lectures sometimes boring.
Good guy, good lecturer. Notes were harder to understand, write down what he actually says rather than go with the pp notes. Print out pp outline from D2L most DEFINITELY! Impossibly to simply copy down notes in class... too quick paced. Only exams are the grade. Much need to study though!
he is an okay teacher..his lectures are just hard to follow and his test are kind of hard
Great teacher, easy class. test averages are in the upper 80s. Do the work and you'll be fine!
Gerber likes to explain alot, so if you ask him questions outside of class be prepared to here more then asked. The class is mainly memorization but if you listen to his explanations and show up to class you'll do fine. Get ready for alot of "None of these." Take the class and you'll know what I mean.
Gives out a lot of information, but tells you exactly what you need to know for test and doesn't put anything he didn't lecture about on test, tests may require a lot of studying but he is very helpful
He likes to talk a lot. You will NEVER get out of class even a minute early. If someone asks a question he will give an answer that takes about 8 minutes to explain and will not actually answer the question. Not a horrible teacher, but very dull and boring. Tests are pretty easy if you go to class though.
He is one of the worst professors I've had. Only reads from the slides and is not good at explaining things. If you do not love bio, do not take him because he is so confusing! Tests are unfair and tricky and way to in depth and tries to fool you.
Do not take him he doesn't care about this lower level course. He would much rather be teaching ecology. If you can take another prof. do it!
WARNING DO NOT TAKE!!!! This teacher sucks. He thinks he is the bomb and doesn't care about lower level biology. FIND ANOTHER TEACHER!!
Dr. Gerber is a very friendly professor outside of class and willing to help you if you ask. However, he reads completely off of slides in lecture, does not explain the concepts well at all, and expects you to know more for the tests then what he teaches. It seems like he purposefully tries to trick you on tests, which is frustrating.
Dr. Gerber is always willing to answer questions, but never actually ANSWERS them. He is terrible at clearly explaining things. He gives quizzes every 2 lectures that are almost always difficult, and he definitely likes to try to trick you. Overall, wouldn't recommend.
I kind of liked this guy but he has a weird teaching style. He goes through slides fast but everything is online and I would suggest printing off the notes and just using those for your notes. He words questions on quizzes and tests tricky. Sometimes he is really good at answering questions. Overall he isn't a horrible teacher.
Teacher is awful at answering questions in class. He will take forever to answer them but never get around to helping your confusion. Lectures are EXTREMELY boring since he reds directly off of the slides and he purposely tries to trick you on tests and quizzes. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO! SERIOUSLY!!
HE LOVES PLANTS SO MUCH! He is very passionate about the class he is teaching, his exams and lab are both pretty easy, just come to class and take GOOD notes. If possible, print them or write them out ahead of time so you can pay more attention to what he's saying.
Took him for 105 then again for 204 because I liked him so much. He is very straight forward. He lectures off the powerpoints that are online and all tests are straight multiple choice. He is assionate about what he teaches which adds interest. Very sweet guy.
Great professor - Fun,pretty easy and very knowledgeable.
Very nice professor but this class was a lot more difficult than it should have been. There are 3 exams and one cumulative final, all multiple choice. However, the exams are extremely tricky.
I had him for class and lab. He took the time to really get to know his students and was a great guy to talk to. Make sure you study and go to every class!
Boring lectures, talks down to students
Gerber rocks. super chill and funny. very easy to get him off on a tangent however
Gerber is the absolute best. He really cares about plants and has a wealth of knowledge about it. Put in the effort and you will pass without a problem. He likes to joke around and make things light since labs can be somewhat long, but he usually lets us out early.
If you study the material, his tests are fairly easy. Only 3 exams and a couple of easy assignments. You usually get out of lab early but make sure you stay and ask questions on material before leaving. He can be a little intimidating at first because he drills you with questions but it helps you in the long run.
You can tell he is knowledgable, but his lectures are almost like he is yelling at you. He will ask questions to the whole lecture and when no one answers, he gets angry. His teaching style is very aggressive and annoying. But then he'll crack a joke and suddenly you remember he is human.
Gerber was an overall nice guy and he really does know what he is talking about. However his lecture slides don't have much content so when you try to study his slides just confuse you. I had to use the textbook to study. Also, he definitely makes tests harder than they need to be. Gets mad in lecture if you don't respond to questions. Don't take.
Tests are VERY HARD. Studied for 4 days with a tutor and class average was a 65. Very small curves and he isn't very good at explaining things. Lectures are kinda confusing and there are some pretty difficult assignments in between the 4 tests. Final is cumulative so good luck with that. Nice dude just not a great explainer
Worst teacher I've ever had. DO NOT take bio with Gerber. The slides he goes through in lecture are unorganized and hard to understand. He focuses on irrelevant details and the tests are really hard. He expects you to have background knowledge especially chem even though this is an entry level class. He assigned 2 projects the week before finals.
Go to office hours!!
Dry lectures and makes tests ridiculously hard. Would not take again. Talks down to students and isnt helpful in explaining things.
Lot's of people don't like him, but that's what people say about every BIO 105 class. It's going to be hard. I didn't like Dr. Gerber until he left for a week and we had 3 different subs. All of those subs (who were also bio professors at UWL) were way worse. Print off slides to help with your note taking. He may seem grumpy but he explains things!
I would highly recommend not taking Prof Gerber. His lectures are so boring and dry. He acts as though he hates teaching the class. If you do- make sure to staple your homework. Otherwise, you will get a demeaning lecture about being unprofessional as well as a zero on the assignment (not joking). Yikes.
Daniel Gerber is a great, funny guy and I definitely recommend asking him questions or even just talking to him. However, he's a bit of a boring teacher. His lectures are PACKED with information whether it's important or not and he doesn't clearly tell you what's the important material. I think there are better teachers, but he is good.
He was one of my profs for capstone and I personally didn't like him. He was a super difficult grader for the final paper and wasn't very clear on what was on the rubric, so people got a lot of points docked. He is also super awkward to talk to, in regards to answering questions... He lacked in that department big-time.
Literally the slowest talker I have ever heard. I am currently listening to his lecture notes on 2x speed and he sounds like a normal person. Just gets old when you have so many other things to do and you're stuck listening to his monotone, 55 minute lecture videos.
He is a very funny teacher and is very easy to talk to. He does not say what is important information for the tests during lecture but is very clear with his lectures. I am taking his class fully online asynchronous and he is very easy to get in contact with.
Gerber was an amazing professor who really cared for his students and his job. You can really see how passionate he is, and he really tries his hardest to help out. I would definitely take him again.
Gerber is such a nice guy but when lecturing he gets into WAY too many unimportant details. You can tell, however, that he's very passionate about what he teaches. The only thing that bothered me but also helped was how tedious he was about explaining things. It helped me remember in the long run but in the moment bored the heck out of me.
Gerber would talk about the plant portion. I would go out of my way to skip the plant lectures and read on my own. He talks so slow and in a tone that sounded very obnoxious. Went off topic, wouldnt finish in time slot, and would go over. PowerPoints were hard to follow, overall hard to follow what hes attempting to teach.
Gerber is a great guy that obviously doesn't put himself in his student's shoes. He will answer every question you ask but will also ramble about whatever after. Labs are very unstructured and the whole class leaves it up to you to absorb the content. The only thing graded is exams which makes his class hard and also easy simultaneously.
He's an okay guy. He co-taught with Professor Sandland, and I think this made him look a little better than he actually is, but I still think he's a viable option for 203. I will admit, however, that he primarily lectures on plant material, and coming from someone who thinks that plants are interesting, his lectures put me to sleep.
I had Dr. Gerber for 203Lab. He rambles on a bit at the beginning of the period but he's a nice guy and very helpful. He's friendly and good to talk to. I had to skip a few labs this semester and he was accommodating for the most part. It's quite self guided so you get out at a good time.
