You're graded on 4 exams. Luckily the final is non-comprehensive. Lectures are kind of boring and his powerpoints have no words, just maps. It's hard to know what he finds important for the test because the lectures have lots of info in them. His exams are 60% from the book and 40% from the lecture, so it helps to read.
I dread walking into his class. He turns off the light for his lectures so it's even harder to stay awake with his monotone voice. With the way he presents his information I'm surprised anyone passes his class.
I had Dr. Giblin for 20th Century World Wars, and I found his lectures very interesting and very knowledgeable. Just picture a taller version of Louis C.K. and thats Dr. Giblin. Very dry sense of humor. When it comes to exams, make sure that you have some Blue Books on hand because thats what you'll use in his exams.
He only gives 4 exams, including the final. The final is just like another exam, non-comprehensive. He says he doesn't, but he chooses the most minute details for a majority of the test. If you have him, good luck. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that his voice will put you to sleep
Do. Not. Take. This. Class. Dr. G's heart is in the right place, but he is a terrible lecturer. He reads straight from the notes giving the impression he has no idea what he is talking about... and he doesn't. It seems like this is his first time teaching college and he doesn't quite get it yet.
I already trashed this guy on here once but one bad review wasn't enough
Worst professor I have ever had the misfortune of taking. Almost all the class failed the second exam until he was forced to add points or something. Crazy amounts of students go to his office hours because no one has any clue what is going on it class. He bounces around in his lectures so much that it is impossible to follow!
Dr. Giblin is a nice guy, but an awful teacher... He reads straight off his printed lecture notes and hardly looks up. There are 4 exams, and the final is non-comprehensive. These 4 exams are your only grades. The tests are on the smallest little details of the book. If you don't read, you won't pass.
I feel bad giving him a bad review.. but do not take him! The tests are super hard mainly because he seems to purposefully ask questions about the most random details that we barely went over; it feels as if he wants to trick you.
I feel bad for giving Giblin a bad review because he's really funny and a nice guy, but his class is terrible.. The only grades are four exams and they're insanely difficult because they're on random details. I love history and have always had good grades in it but it seems impossible to do well in this class no matter how much I study or go to si.
The majority of the test comes from the book. Sadly, the majority of the lecture isn't & he reads straight from a sheet of paper. He talks fast & his powerpoint give 0 info. Anytime he gets into a portion about a particular battle or military tactic he enjoys, his lecture livens up and he does a great job explaining that specific matter. TestHARD
His tests are very hard. I have an A in all of my classes and can't seem to bring my grade up to one in here. You have to read the book and take notes on it in order to do well in his class. This class requires a lot of your time.
4 grades- 4 tests at 25% each. Don't read? you won't pass. Don't listen to lectures? You won't pass. His tests are hard as he asks for some obscure stuff. The only redeeming/attractive thing about this class is that if you don't have more than two absences, your grade gets bumped up 2 whole points at the end of the semester and his final is noncum
He really knows his history but his test questions are very specific and if you don't take good notes or read the book you will not pass his test. Really good guy but if you aren't ready to read every night and really study then don't take this class.
Mr Giblin... wow. Hes a cool dude but his class is too hard. Don't expect to make a C on the test if you don't read the book. I took notes and read the book and studied hard and managed to get a B on all of the tests but I worked my ass off. If you can avoid him, do it. Find an easier teacher. Also, for Hist 1 there are only 4 tests.
Super tough professor. His class is just reading off of essays for an hour and a half with a powerpoint showing one or two photos. His tests are pretty detailed with nitpicky questions. Your grade comes from four tests and no other quizzes or assignments. Even if you study the textbook and his lectures, you still won't know everything. Good luck.
Gives too much information for a test. Will ask the stupidest and most irrelevant questions for exams.
NEVER. TAKE. GIBLIN. He is the worst teacher I have ever had. His tests are impossible and you only have 4 all year, including the final. The class size has dropped to 1/2 of the original because of the amount of people that have dropped.
Horrible. Worst professor I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. NEVER TAKE!!!! Taking him is the worse thing i've ever done. He is so scattered in lectures and his test are very hard. Expects you to read the whole book and tests you from the book. Don't take this class unless you hate yourself.
Giblin is a nice guy, but his lectures are IMPOSSIBLE to follow and pay attention to. They consist of him putting an obscure picture on a powerpoint and him talking about something nonrelated for an hour and 15 minutes. His tests are almost impossible, and require you to read the ENTIRE book. DO NOT TAKE
Had Giblin for 1010. Very knowledgeable but that did not translate to good instructing. Lectures are long, hard to follow and are for the most part irrelevant to the tests. If you want a shot at an A or B, you will have to be at every class and read the text multiple times before each test.
SOS TURN BACK NOW! His lectures are all over the place and very difficult to follow. You MUST read the textbook to pass. His tests are pretty difficult and he does not cover most of the material in lecture. You should take anyone else if you're looking for an easy A in a core history class.
You have to go to class bc most ?s are from the lecture. He adds two points to your FINAL grade if you don't miss more than two classes. He doesn't put his notes on the board and he just reads them from a piece of paper, so I hope you can write/type fast. You have to read the book if you want an A. Only 4 grades, all tests, but they're easy.
Dr. Giblin's lectures aren't super entertaining and can be all over the place but the majority of questions that come from them are super easy. You have to read and study the book, but it's only like 3 chapters per test and if you study a little at a time you'll be fine. Definitely not an easy A but if you're willing to work for it you'll be fine.
I hated this class. I read every chapter, went to every SI session, and studied all the lecture notes and still struggled. He gives no extra credit and has no sympathy for anyone. I honestly have no idea how anyone had an A in the class.
Dr. Giblin has a bad rep because world history I should not be this hard. I only recommend him for history majors. He only gives 4 tests (including the final) so each one is 25% of your grade. I've never worked so hard for an 80. Do not miss more than 2 lectures because he will give you 2 pts on your final grade at the end. "60%textbook,40%lecture"
If you already hate history get ready to hate it more. There are three tests and one final the entire semester and they are your only grades. The tests are not impossible and they're only multiple choice which is a plus, but it's usually on topics we never covered in the lecture or in the book.
Probably the worst class I've ever taken and I don't mind history, but this class at 8am? Kill Me. The lectures are awful and he just talks and it's hard to know what is important because he rambles. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go you will not pass. you're going to want to kill yourself every time you walk in to that lecture.
Boring, hard-to-follow lectures. Talks too fast, knows his class is hard and doesn't care. Lots of material from the test is from the textbook, unlike many other history professors. Tests are difficult and SI's hardly help. Doesn't curve tests. Not overly nice in email either, he's one of those "check the syllabus" teachers. Anyone but him, really.
All I can really say is LOL cause this class will kill you mentally and emotionally
12/10 don't recommend. He gives out 4 tests, and those are your only grades. Lectures are long, and almost impossible to take all of the notes quick enough.
He is a horrible lecturer. His tests are questions you can only find by reading the book. Do not take him as you will spend all your time reading and stressing over his tests.
He is literally the worst history teacher. During his lectures he does not make it clear when he's moved on to another topic and he jumps all over the place. He also constantly reads off a sheet a paper at lightening speed so you can barely write down any of his notes. You can get an A in the class its just difficult and you have to read A LOT!
Decent guy, but my least favorite professor. He expects you to read the material and it's a lot. I haven't been able to make a single B on a test and I study a good bit. Go to class so he will give you an extra 2 points on the final grade. His lectures take up the whole class and it's hard to write down what he is saying. Try to avoid taking him
Absolutely hated this class. It was very difficult and your only grades are the 4 exams.
Lectures are absolutely impossible to follow. Has no slides and reads from his paper incredibly fast, and never makes clear when he changes topics. You have to read at least 3+ hours for each test, and so many of the questions are still stuff you have never seen. Least favorite teacher I have ever had. Do everything you can to avoid this class.
Giblin is one of the worst professors I have ever had. Do not take him. There are only four tests and that is what your entire grade is based off of. He says its 60% lecture, but its more like 80% book and 20% lecture. If you are into history and long boring lectures then take him, but if not switch out ASAP!!!
The kinda professor that picks test questions from the primary source box in the text book. Test questions either pretty easy, or all over the place. Honestly a pretty nice guy, just not a great teacher.
AVOID AT ALL COST IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOURSELF! As a junior, I can honestly say I have never had such strong feelings against a teacher. His tests are absolutely impossible, he tests on things that aren't in his lectures and barely even mentioned in the book, and is rude. Take someone else. I am not joking don't do this to yourself!!!!
Lectures are long and boring, just reads off a sheet a paper, but you'll learn how to take notes. There are 4 tests, each of them 25% of your grade, 50 MC questions and a bonus. The tests are very straightforward. If you read the book and understand it, you should do well. Each chapter takes 2 hours to read, and you have 1 (sometimes 2) a week.
The whole class is based off of 4 very poorly written tests. Tests seem to have multiple correct answers and many questions with unimportant material yo never think to study. He lectures every single class, hardly ever staying on topic or relating to much of anything from the textbook. Pretty much just read summaries online and you'll get a B.
Terrible class. Spent the whole semester listening to the dude read essays. He stands in front of the room and reads thousands of words per class and then expects you to be able to answer the nit-picky questions on the FOUR 50-60 question tests he gives you over the course of the semester. I learned nothing and this class ruined my GPA
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He will stand in front of the class and read off of a piece of paper for the entire lecture and expect you to be able to keep up with him in your notes, then ask a nit picky question about a small aspect of the topic. I'm an engineering major and this class hurt my GPA more than physics
Very Rude. He expects you to do around 6 hours of reading per chapter. Each test usually includes 3-4 Chapters, along with very boring, poorly planned, Lectures that are nearly impossible to take notes on.
Only 3 tests and a final. The final is non-cumulative so that's a plus, but because there are no other assignments each test is 25% of your final grade. Says 40% of of the test comes from the lectures and 60% from the book but it's more like 30/70. Really have to read those 100+ pages per test for an A.
4 tests are your only grades. Giblin really knows what he's talking about in some areas, but for a survey class, he kind of seemed clueless and had to read off of notes. Talks very fast in lecture, powerpoints aren't detailed. Really a nice guy and wishes he was able to give more than just tests, but knows he can't in a large class.
Boring lectures. Reads manuscript off a piece of paper. Must read the textbook to get a decent grade on the tests. Tests are difficult at best.
The guy literally read from the Tech & Civ textbook during his lectures. So this class was basically on two different textbooks. If you didn't read the textbook like he says then there's no way of passing. Lectures were dreadfully boring.
Boring lectures. He gives 2 points bonus to your final grade if you miss less than 3 classes, which forces you to show up (if you care about extra credit). His tests are extremely detailed on very specific topics which are hard to pinpoint considering you cover thousands of years of history. Would not recommend him.
Dr. Giblin is the hardest professor that I have ever had. He lectures on the art of war and will not even mention key topics covered in the book. Because the two do not cover the same material studying is very difficult. Nice guy but never again.
I ended up getting an A in the class because I went to every lecture and every SI session. The only reason I got the A was from my SI instructor.
He is literally the worst teacher in the world.
DON'T TAKE GIBLIN. I had him for HIST 1010 my first semester and he was a new teacher so I wasn't sure how he was going to be and he ended up being TERRIBLE. I ended up dropping the class because he was such a bad teacher. He is the kind of guy that will ask a question from the tiny "Did you know" box in the textbook.
Dr. Giblin has to be one of the worst professors at Auburn. He tells you at the beginning of the semester that its 70 percent lecture and 30 percent the book when in reality its 98 percent the reading and 2 percent his lecture. You have to come to class though because he takes attendance. Never take Dr. Giblin.
Terrible. His lectures have maybe 20% of test content. Only way to pass is do all the reading yourself. Loves to hear himself talk. Has his TA's take attendance in a 200 person lecture hall so attendance is mandatory.
While his lectures were quite boring (albeit I find history a boring subject), his class is not too bad. His tests are not overly difficult as long as you read the book. He recommends reading each chapter twice which is excessive, but if you take good notes from reading the chapter once and study those, you should be fine.
I genuinely have no idea what these other comments are for. I am taking HIST 3640 and he is easily the most knowledgeable teacher about military history I have ever found. These other commenters are salty af because they pay tuition money for Auburn and decide not to go to class. If you give even half a damn about the class, it's an easy B if not A
I had Dr. Giblin for HIST1010 and didn't like him but he has improved so much. Attendance is mandatory and his tests are 60% book 40% lecture. The only negative thing about him is that he talks really fast during lecture and can get off topic (especially loves to talk about Russia). There are four tests and that's it but the final isn't cumulative.
I didn't miss a class all semester, went to every SI session, read the book multiple times, and still didn't manage to get an A. I made at least two hundred notecards for every test and still couldn't figure out where he got some of the test questions from. This is the class that ruined my 4.0 and I have no idea how people came out with an A.
I read all of these reviews but thoutght I would be fine. I made a D on the first test but I kept making Cs so I thought I'd be fine. I bombed the final and made the first D I ever made in my life. I was a few questions away from keeping a C. All other classes was an A or a B? I read the book and went to every class. Don't take this professor.
This class ruined my 4.0 gpa. I busted my butt in this class and barely made an A. It was the hardest class I've ever taken which is just ironic considering it was literally world history 1. It's frustrating that I managed to make a 98 in organismal biology and couldn't figure out how to do well in this class. Avoid if you can.
His lectures are incredibly boring and you can't tell what information he tells you is important. You must read every word of every chapter in order to even have a chance at getting an A or a B in the class. I would never recommend his class to anyone. However, if you work very hard, you can get an A.
This man is very difficult. Half of my class dropped right away. Im holding on strong with a 77. Great guy but bad lectures and confusion on what the test is on. ALL BOOK
Do not take him, awful professor. Hope he goes back to teach in Russia. Very boring.
Hi, my name is Judd. Dr. Giblin called me out one day in class and said, "Son, give me a word to describe yesterday's lecture". I froze, I could not spit a word out. He then proceeded to make me feel stupid about myself. I made a 41 on his first test and decided to drop the class. Great guy, terrible professor. Really knew how to get inside my head
I had Dr. Giblin for military history. I would, and have, recommend the course to anyone interested. He asks a lot of his students, but the format of this class was so engaging that most students, myself included, were inspired to actually do all of the reading. If you're a history major looking to improve your writing, his feedback is pure gold.
Don't take World History 1 under Dr. Giblin. He doesn't lecture over the textbook, but at least 70% of the test questions are from the textbook and he talks about the chariot way too much. The grade in this class is determined by the average of 4 tests only. Giblin doesn't give out any type of concept guide for the tests. Don't take his class.
Do not take if you have other difficult classes and are taking a lot of hours. If you dont read the book (avg. 150 pgs a week) then you will not pass the tests- so you will need a lot of study time dedicated to this class. Go to every SI and go to class, but everytime I went to class I would take that time to read. Lectures are hard to follow
His lectures vary. Sometimes they help and sometimes they don't. He doesn't give any homework or papers. His tests are hard and you have to read the book and take plenty of notes, but it's manageable if you study enough in advance.
I saw an old GTA for this class in public and they actually apologized that I had to deal with him. Not a good teacher
Four tests were only grade. Tons of reading. Lecture hardly on test
Professor Giblin was horrible. He reads his notes off of a piece of paper and expects you to get everything he is saying. He also requires an insane amount of reading. I ended up in World History 2 class, so I dropped it. I would never take anything he teaches again.
I see a lot of bad reviews on here. I want to clarify. When it comes to upper level history courses, he is a great professor. Awesome lectures and interesting material. I see a lot of complaining, so let me be clear. HIST1010 SUCKS REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU TAKE! If it's a required course, suck it up and go. He works well with his students. He's good.
If you are thinking about taking him, let me tell you, NO NO NO!!! Turn back and get a new teacher while you can. He is the WOAT, absolute woat. SO much reading, such LONG lectures where you sit trying to write everything he says down because he speaks aloud without guidance. He's very condescending. His class is SO hard!
Gave us assigned seats which is ridiculous for 200+ student class. Lectures are pretty boring which is understandable, but then he tried to make us do readings and discuss them which was awful. he can also be pretty pretentious. Only four tests and no matter how much I studied i never knew what to expect. Final wasn't cumulative which is nice.
Large lecture class with only 4 tests for total grade. Attendance isn't part of your grade, but he will give you extra credit for final grade if you don'y skip that much. YOU NEED TO READ. Oh yeah, if you don't like reading, you better start liking it. His lectures usually overlap with the book, and he'll mention when his lecture is different.
Dr. Giblin's class is a good option for those who enjoy history, but if you are taking History 1010 just for credit I would recommend taking someone else. He enjoys the subject, but most of the lectures are boring and there is a ton of outside reading.
Despite the bad things I heard about this class, it actually might have been the best I had all year, and I think Giblin is a good professor. His lectures are long, and can sometimes get boring, but I found him to be funny. His tests are hard, but pay attention, take notes, read the book (this will be terrible), and go to some SI and you will be ok
AVOID GIBLIN AT ALL COSTS!!!!! Worst professor I've ever had!! Class is mandatory, but what he covers during lectures is not what is on tests. Very pointless and tests are ALL READING..... stay away from this class!
Giblin absolutely sucks. This dude is so boring. When I think of a boring historian who has no substance to life and would be perfectly happy with his nose in a history book for the rest of his life, Giblin is what comes to mind.
Most of the wall lectures you'll ever attend.
Giblin isn't a particularly good teacher or a bad one. Expects you to come to class, do the assigned reading, and take notes. If you do this, then you won't have anything to worry about. Fairly entertaining and is funny sometimes but lecture overall is pretty boring. Tests are only multiple choice which is great. All in all an okay class.
Dr. Giblin's class was awesome. He really tries to make it interactive and informative. There are only 4 tests for your whole grade, so make sure you study hard. It's about 60% from the book and 40% from lecture, so if you skip class you won't do well. I would definitely take him again!
Dr. Giblin is super funny & tries a lot to make the lectures interesting. He is so passionate about history. Test aren't really hard just read the chapter & do the end of chapter study questions or go to SI. Beware chapters are LONG, you MUST read MULTIPLE times to understand bcus chapter & lectures are SO HEAVY. Offers extra credit for attendance.
His lecture material is barely on the test. The material in the book is the majority of the test, which he doesnt really cover. You basically have to teach yourself to get a good grade. He is a good guy, but not a very helpful teacher.
He's actually a really cool dude, and very funny. Don't listen to the other people, they just don't want to work. Yes, you do have to read the book, but the tests are really not bad at all and they're funny too. No homework, just four tests, but i worked my butt off at the beginning and made 100s so at the end i didn't have to worry at all.
Best, when it comes to teaching. But, worst at grading policy.
Your grade depends only on the tests and the tests are mostly from reading the textbook but also include a small amount of the lecture. He gives a small bonus for those who have good attendance. The tests are not that bad as long as you somewhat know what is going on. Class is boring but required to get a good grade.
I've had Dr. Giblin for two semesters (I specifically chose him again after the first semester) and he's easily the most enthusiastic and engaging history teacher I've ever had. His lectures miss quite a bit of content in the book, so there's a lot of reading needed for his tests, but overall he's enthusiastic about his specialty and it shows.
Horrible, boring, irrelevant lectures. Very mundane and reads from a script. Lectures only on what he finds interesting (communism, russia, and military history.) Overall he is a nice and funny guy but the average person will not get an A in here without reading the book.
Not a horrible history professor but not that great. You can get a solid B if that is what you want and if you want to read a ton. I wish I had taken a different history teacher.
Incredibly enthusiastic and will lecture about things that are not usually taught in high school and are not from the book. I enjoyed his class but definitely needed to pay attention and do the reading since he does not post notes on canvas and doesn't write much in the slides. Easy to get along with and talk to out of class and gives extra credit.
Professor Giblin, aka Big Daddy Dan, aka Danny G, is the greatest history teacher at Auburn. Just read the textbook and you'll get a B.
Test and quizzes are challenging. Make sure you read the textbooks and take very good notes to study
Took him in fall of 2017 for a 3000 level course. He was a very tough grader and not helpful at all. Makes you read 30-40 pages and does not do a good job of covering the text. He comes across as intimidating but does not do a good job of that either, Would not recommend.
