AWESOME GUY!
Awesome teacher, hilarious, really knows how to hold students' attention during lecture
funny, cares about students, applies to real world life experiences, gets whole class involved in discussion even though its a big lecture class
nice guy, goes on tangents a lot with personal stories and video clips, connects PP to real world issues for clarity, a lot of reading for the class but you don't really have to do it, study the power points from lectures and its a piece of cake
TAs grade the tests and policy briefs, which can be a drag, but his class is fairly interesting, especially when he uses YouTube clips to show different sides of an issue or just to have fun. I've decided on becoming a public policy major after this class. Highly recommended!
Such a nice guy! Does really use class time all that effectively (goes on tangents, personal stories, etc.) but he really cares about his students. If you're concerned about your grade he is willing talk during office hours and usually he'll give you a few points back on a midterm if you have a problem with question.
Great class!
Gitterbug is an effective prof. He wasn't really available this semester, but I think he was just busy advising the Governor, which is pretty cool. Most of the poor reviews come from egotistical freshmen who expect a mirror image of their perfect selves. Prof is a sociologist with serious hopes for democratic cooperation in public policy.
Good class - sometimes really boring sometimes very engaging. He is a menschlekeit guy, and I've told him this, who overall wants an active class and engaged student population. He really helped to make sure I could stay engaged with the class under difficult circumstances. The textbook does leave a lot to be desired. He wants students to do well!
If you have interest (doesn't matter how much) in policy and looking for an amazing professor who made the course material interesting enough: then this is the class. He always tied his material to topics that influence you. People writing neg. stuff prolly didn't pay attention and failed. Jst go to class all the time do your work: you will get A!
This class is meant to be a general introduction to Public Policy in America. If you read the assigned readings and debates you will get just that. If you don't, you won't. Put garbage in, get garbage out. Dr. Gitterman is great. He wants respect in the classroom, and if you give that to him, you'll have no reason to dislike the guy.
Easy class and shows himself to be a nice, understanding guy in a big lecture. If you go to him during office hours he's very hard to talk to and doesn't seem very approachable, almost standoff-ish. If you're having trouble, the TAs are usually most helpful, but the class itself is pretty easy if you've taken Poli 100 or Econ 101.
Really great teacher and willing to help. Picks pretty interesting topics and tries to engage students by using youtube and discussion. People say he attacks your ideas if you don't agree with him, but I'm not even sure what he believes--He doesn't really give his opinion in class, he just presents the facts.
This class is a general overview of lots of different aspects of American Public Policy. It's really not helpful if you already follow the news and are aware of the current political structure. Class attendance is required, which is silly since lectures don'aren't instructive, and debates are ineffective because the class is so huge.
Went into class only knowing what I'd read about Gitterman on this page. Have an open mind about him. I found him to be funny, a clear lecturer, and maybe a little embarrassing to students at times, but never horrible. Only class I didn't surf the web in, since the TA's watch. I think it's good that he is serious about it, and not a pushover.
Gitterman is a cool guy. Good lecturer, funny at times and uses youtube clips to integrate current events to discussion topics. only downside is he requires attendance which really isn't necessary. It's a good class and I would definitely recommend. You might find you have an interest in public policy!
Just had him for Maymester. You would think that a class 3 1/2 hours long every day for three weeks would be horrible, and it has been a lot of work, but Professor Gitterman has been absolutely awesome. He genuinely cares about what hes teaching about, has great credentials considering his past work experience, and went to great schools. Awesome!!!
freaks out about facebook and email but he's hilarious and engaging, and knows what hes talking about
Really funny professor. You will really enjoy his lectures!
Great professor, fun class!
Fun class. The TA's rock too.
Fun class...lots of youtube videos that relate well to the material...out of class readings not helpful
Gitterman is an excellent professor. EVERY DAY his lectures are interesting, and even if you aren't particularly into politics and policymaking in the beginning by the time you take the midterm you will be! Definitely one of my favorite classes at UNC.
Gitterman is possibly the best professor at UNC. His class is very interesting and not extremely difficult.
Easily my favorite professor at Carolina so far. His class is very interactive, and many (not all) of the students seem to have informed opinions. He assigns readings and then goes over the main points (which you will be tested on) during lectures. Going to class is extremely beneficial because it is interesting and will help you do well on exams.
When my parents and friends ask about my classes and professors I talk about Gitterman. If you go to UNC, take this class.
His class honestly flies by. It's a really interactive class and he will keep you entertained. I definately recommend.
Really great class. Keeps it interesting and entertaining. Good to take if you just want a broad scope of public policy.
He's a great guy! So funny, too. He'll keep you active in class-even if there are 300 students.
extremely funny
He is one of the nicest professors I have ever met. He is a really charming guy and has a big heart. During my midterm, my computer had glitches, but he was completely understanding about it. He keeps lectures entertaining, although you learn a lot from them. As long as you put in an effort to do the readings and study his notes, you can get an A.
Professor Gitterman is the man. He is engaging, funny, and there is never a dull moment. He gives his class a good grasp of policy issues and you will learn a lot. Not the easiest class to be sure, but informative and worth taking. On a side note, don't multitask. He makes you sign an agreement and if you break it, well, its painful to watch.
This guy is the bomb dot com. He cares about his students and makes it almost impossible to not do well in the class. He puts in a great deal of work into the class, so he does expect you not to multitask (facebook, twitter, etc), but that's reasonable. He's an understanding person whom we can all relate to. The class itself is also very engaging
It was a blessing and a privilege to have a professor as dedicated and caring as Professor Gitterman. He has a good heart and invests a lot of time and effort in making his lectures both engaging and informative. Professor Gitterman is someone who makes Carolina the great school that it is! I loved his course, and you will too!
I'm sad Policy 101 is over--Professor Gitterman is awesome! Take his class, its great for anyone who is even remotely interested in policy. :)
Gitterman is the greatest professor at UNC. His lectures are extremely interesting! I had no interest in policy before I took this class but now I am planning to minor in public policy. TAKE HIM!!!!!
Great class and teacher. Not sure why people are complaining about the final - went out the night before and still thought it was extremely fair. Very representative of his powerpoints and lectures throughout the year if you reviewed them for any time at all - Would recommend to anyone with an interest as Gman really is a top notch prof
I'm a little ashamed of my classmates at the moment. The class was interesting and engaging and the final's difficulty was determined only by the work you put into the class. When a teacher assigns work, it is fair game for it to be on the exam, and this is coming from someone who probably did quite poorly on the final.
I would ignore most of the criticism about Gitterman. He is easily one of the most funny, interesting, and entertaining teachers you will have at Carolina. PLCY 101 is definitely a class worthwhile taking. He always takes in consideration wht students are going through. The final can be as easy as you make it. Do the readings and its quite easy
A great class. The professor cares about us as students and is very funny. The final was not easy but for anyone who studied and had at least a basic knowledge of the readings it shouldn't have been too difficult. Even after the final I still highly recommend this class. Ps. Just do the readings.
Though this is my 1st semester at Carolina, Gitterman is one of the best professors I've had so far. Didn't really get the chance to talk to him, but he keeps the class entertained with stories and outbursts of excitement. The final wasn't bad at all, TAs were great, and to those who complain, he told us that the final would be READING BASED.
For everyone who is complaining about the final ... he told us to make sure and do the readings. None of my other classes with supplemental reading go over the readings in class. For any future students: the mid-term is totally different than the final so just be prepared!
I loved this class. Professor Gitterman is an extremely enthusiastic lecturer who adds videos and examples to make class interesting. He seems to genuinely care about students and that they truly learn and apply what they learn to the real world. The final was reading based, yes, but he gave fair warning and if you read through them it was fine.
Prof. Gitterman was completely fair in giving out a reading-based test. From day one we were assigned readings and this was always expected from us. Studying will make exams much smoother, as it should. Loved this professor and hope you all take a class with him. I always looked forward to his class.
Good person and professor. The final was hard for those of us that actually have lives/other classes that are also reading based. More work than I would have liked for a 101. I didn't feel the final accurately represented the material covered. for all of you who said "just do the readings," some were 10 pages long and very dense. not an easy A.
Gitterman was always concerned with students actual well being and frequently extended due dates solely to reduce student stress. As far as his final; he explained what it consisted of and that it was based on the readings many times. If one attended class and did the readings, there wouldn't have been a single problem. Excellent professor.
Professor Gitterman is a fantastic professor and was very fair in his tests. He let his students know exactly what was going to be on the test with a very specific study guide. I'm appalled at these comments from people who took Gitterman for granted. As someone who didn't do any of the readings whatever I receive on this final is what I deserve.
I really liked this class. I don't think this page should be dedicated to the final, but since we were all emailed about it I can say I didn't think it would be totally based off the readings. But that's completely understandable. He's a great man, and has contributed lots to society already, and wants us to do the same!
For those who complain about the readings being too much because they have a life, Policy 101 (and likely school in general) was just not a priority for them. Considering we were given a heads up about the final being reading-based, I think the amount of lecture material on it was very generous. Gitterman is a great professor and I learned a lot!!!
Amazing professor! Really cares about his students. Put in the work and you will do well. Strict no-technology policy but he makes his lectures very entertaining and engaging to compensate. Very straightforward about exam material and offered extensions for both papers. Best class I've taken at UNC!
This class is really engaging and Gitterman makes lectures interesting and fun. He's one hell of a professor. For students who attend his lectures, they recieve heads ups on what is going to be on the exams and finals. The final exam was a little rough, but he did give us a warning before hand that the final will be based on readings. Overall, good
I took PLCY 101 last semester and thoroughly enjoyed the course. Dr. Gitterman does a great job at giving an overview of American policy making and prepping students for further policy work (exactly what the course is designed to do). If the professor threw you for a loop on the final, well, welcome to college...
Made this class as interesting as possible. Obviously loves what he does and cares about the topic. I actually like lectures and he made them genuinely entertaining. By far one of the best professors at UNC.
He always keeps the class interested in lectures, using youtube videos and polling questions. Minimal work, good lectures, good teacher. Everyone please stop whining about the exam, he told us like four times what would be on it and how to study for it.
Gitterman is one of the greatest professors. The "reading based" final was hard but he also announced that in lecture. And my TA was awesome. If you show them you genuinely care about your grade and the material, they will genuinely care about it too. A lot of what I learned is useful in life.
Professor Gitterman is one of the best professors at UNC. He makes 300+ student lecture class interactive and extremely interesting. Going into this course I had no real interest in public policy but now I am really going to miss it. Learned a lot that will be applied in everyday life. Take this class and you will not be disappointed.
Gitterman was an engaging professor for teaching a intro course of 240. His powerpoints are easy to follow and he makes the class interesting through videos and outbursts of enthusiasm. As for the final, he made it reading-based because on two occasions the overwhelming majority of the class admitted to not reading! We deserved it. He's a good prof
I had Gitterman for 101 and he is an amazing teacher. His lectures are engaging and he actually cares about his students and what they get out of his class. I only took it as a gen ed requirement and i might be a public policy major now. i highly recommend this class.
Professor Gitterman is an extremely nice man who knows all about his class subject. He's willing to meet with students and he seems to genuinely care about their well-being. While I do agree the final was a little surprising, we had the readings assigned for a long time prior. Overall my best class this semester and if you can, definitely take it.
I took the maymester last year with Gitterman and LOVED it. The class was a little intense because of how fast you have to move with the time constraints, but he was so entertaining and made a long class time go by fast. I highly recommend taking his maymester!
Agree with almost all of the previous sentiments on Dr. G.
Gitterman is an excellent professor. He is friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and accessible. He definitely has the best handle on how to engage a 250+ person lecture of any professor I've ever had. Also, he is VERY clear about what he wants in assignments and is fair in grading. There are no curve balls.
Best professor I've had yet. Personable and hilarious. Extremely fair tests and assignments - no curve balls. He really wants you to succeed, and he will help you with ANYTHING if you just ask. My recitation was a little unnecessary, but it was probably just my TA. Everyone should take this class - it gave me the final push to become a PLCY major.
Took PLCY101 for maymester and loved it. Best professor I've had so far. His lectures were interesting and made the 3 hours fly by. The work was very manageable. He cares a lot about his students and what he teaches and it shows. Highly recommended.
Excellent professor. Really cares about his students, engaging, and informative. Even if you aren't interested in policy, I recommend a class with Dr. Gitterman.
Not as easy as everyone says. Not particularly work intensive, but not an easy A. The work you do have to do is usually hard to ace. Midterm and final I got a solid B, pretty much everything was a solid B for me. Gitterman is cool and funny. Not very interesting class, didn't learn much. Readings aren't necessary even for the final.
This was by far one of my favorites classes. He makes class so interesting and you actually WANT to come to class. Has a little bit of a fowl mouth so if you are sensitive to that beware. Overall, his TA's grade very fairly and are always able to help!
Awesome professor. He kept the class entertaining and gave realistic examples of Public Policy in action. You do need to attend class to do the Poll Everywhere questions and his lectures are the most helpful when it comes to studying for the exams.
ATTEND CLASS. It may seem like you don't have to, but his TA's monitor the PollEverywhere and they will catch you skipping. Readings are not necessary, and he gives helpful study guides for the exams. One big paper, but outside of that its not a lot of work. He's super entertaining in class, and he shows a lot of videos, which make you want to go
I loved this professor. I would recommend my friends and other take his class. It's not easy, but it's not supposed to be. I loved learning about everything in policy and enjoyed his enthusiasm and love for the subject. his lectures are interesting and keep you entertained.
Awesome prof! You have to go to class, but his lectures are really interesting and entertaining and make you want to go. He really cares about the students and will help you with anything you want. He's more interested in making sure you learn than making the class difficult. Everything is graded very fairly. Best prof I've had at UNC!
Great professor and really tries to connect with the students by showing videos and telling short anecdotal stories to keep you interested. Make sure to go to class, because although the topics may not be super exciting are very informational and on his tests. A must have teacher a one point in your Carolina career. If motivated easy A.
An amazing professor! He really cared about the students and stressed learning and becoming interested in the material rather than making his class difficult to pass. My TA (McHale) was great; just as engaging as he was and really helpful with any questions I had. The work was easy and little. Great start to UNC! (PS: do NOT buy ANYTHING for PLCY)
Don't listen to the salty kids-- one of the best professors at UNC. He does hold you accountable, but makes class worth coming to with lectures and videos that keep you engaged and interested in the material. He wants to be fair and he wants you to learn, which is refreshing in a professor.
Dr. Gitterman is absolutely great! His lectures are very clear and quite interesting considering the material can sometimes get a little boring. He does a great job of making you appreciate public policy. There are few assignments throughout the semester, and you absolutely have to attend class. It's not hard, his lectures will make you want to go!
One of the best professors I've had. Makes every class interesting and really cares about his students. It is well worth your time to come to class because he clarifies difficult points in the readings and makes the ideas from the textbook (READ IT TO SUCCEED IN CLASS!) more applicable. Wish I could take the class again or another course by him.
Dr. G is a knowledgable professor teaching a very vague class. Plcy 101 has a lot of material, but he touches it all and keeps you interested by being interactive and using multimedia. You must read the assigned policy briefs to pass the final. Would I call Dr. G one of the best profs at UNC? Probably not, but he's a really good guy nonetheless.
An awesome professor. Public policy - particularly the readings - can get a little cumbersome and boring sometimes, but he does an excellent job of making it as interesting as possible while having to graze over an insane amount of topics in a short period of time. A large class, so it's hard to get to know him, but he's super helpful when you ask.
Great lecturer fun class.
He's the reason I decided to major in Public Policy. Best professor I've had yet. His lectures were very informational and hilarious. Great man.
Dr. G is a good professor. He knows what he's talking about, and really tries to make a boring class seem interesting. My only complaint is that participating is difficult, he can be condescending and twist your words to make fun of you. If you're right leaning/conservative like myself, be ready to face some opposition from him and the TAs.
He's the most respected professor in the Public Policy department, yet he teaches PLCY101, and does so extremely well. He makes lectures super laid back and funny, yet still informative. His top ten list is a gem, and he definitely cares about his students. Offers extra credit for going to forums! Overall, definitely a great professor.
Professor Gitterman is awesome! Such a cool dude and a fun class. Want to take something he teaches again.
Dr. Gitterman is your stereotypical zany professor. In addition to being funny, he was passionate about the subject. He obviously cares about his students, even when there are 300-400 in a lecture. Just beware: he takes the no multi-tasking agreement very seriously. He will not hesitate to call you out for being on your phone/sleeping during class.
I love Dr. Gitterman! I was in his Policy 101 class during the (painful) election of 2016. He made a wonderful effort to talk about the necessity for unity and moderacy. His lectures are hilarious, but he isn't above public humiliation. Just be respectful and you can have a great time.
Gitterman is a great professor. He makes lecture super interesting even though the topics can sometimes be a little dry. Attendance is mandatory, but his lectures are interesting enough that you want to go. Also, he goes over everything that's on the midterm and final in lecture. Readings aren't necessary unless you don't go to the lecture.
Thinks a Google Doc is a violation of the Honor Code. Really?
To whoever put on here you don't have to read for exams I hate you. He read your comment and now is making it so you will fail the final exam if you have not read. Other than that Dr. G is the best. I love that man. Honestly my favorite professor. Just complaining cause I'm about to fail this final. woo!
Gitterman is an amazing professor. He makes a broad, introductory course feel interesting and relevant. He also really cares about his students; he's really invested in his classroom and department. His level of passion does, in fact, extend to reading RMP, and understandably resulted in some frustration. Still loved his class and would take again.
The class was great until the final. After reading a Rate My Professor review that said that reading was optional, he made the final difficult and based on the readings, some of which were 80 pages long and not talked about in class. Loved his lectures but the final was too much.
I usually don't post on here but since Gitterman reads it religiously I might as well. Theres not much work involved and it's an easy B+/A- if you show up to lectures and write a decent policy brief. He was too concerned with people being off task that it affected his teaching. He shows passion for the class, but the final was a bit uncalled for.
Awesome professor!! He made lectures interesting and made me want to have a possible double major in public policy. The midterm and the policy brief wasn't bad, but the final was nearly impossible, even if you did do the readings.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AS HONORS. Literally don't! Honors classes are supposed to mean a smaller class size and more in-depth material, that is not what I receive from this class. The grading for honors was 10x harsher than normal, for NO reason. Not to mention this class taught me nothing more than a google search could. Gitterman is cool tho.
I'm really glad I took this class. Gitterman does a wonderful job making the material understandable, and very clearly cares about his students. If you come to this class willing to put in work, you can get an A. He's really funny, I enjoyed every lecture. BUT, do NOT go on Facebook, he'll call you out in front of everyone in the 375 person class.
I throughly enjoyed this class! Although I am in the major, I feel that this class would be interesting even to students who just interested in learning more about policy. Prof. Gitterman is a nice guy despite what some of these other posts say. Go to class, put forth effort on the brief, and take notes on the reading and lecture and you'll be good
Gitterman was awesome. You could tell he really cares about his students and the subject. His midterm and final were straightforward and he doesn't try to trick you or get you on small details.
Gitterman is a great professor who really cares about UNC and its students! His material is very straightforward, and if you go just go to the lectures and pay attention you'll have everything you need to know for his tests. He does take it to heart if you are late/don't pay attention, but he is also the department chair and just wants respect.
On a personal level, I think Prof Gitterman is a passionate department chair. He truly cares for UNC students, especially Public Policy majors. Go to his office hours. Chat with him. Explore what the UNC Public Policy Department has to offer. However, do not waste your time with the class. You will learn nothing about policy. Only life lessons.
Professor G really cares about the material he is teaching, and has clear expectations for assignments, presentations, and tests. It's worth putting in some extra effort outside of class to understand the material and projects, and def go to office hours for feedback or to chat
Dr. G is an energetic, passionate, and involved educator. He's well respected in the UNC community, and his class was fair in terms of assignments, expectations, and grading. However, personal issues, calling out students, and what he did for the final (unreasonably hard) was unfair to overall effort by the students and, frankly, very petty.
Good professor generally. He didn't want to teach this class, though, and that was pretty clear.
Gitterman was by far my favorite professor. He has a real passion for public policy and he really cares about his students. There is a 10 page paper, but you work on it throughout the semester in different parts. His tests are clearly outlined. There are extra credit opportunities but if you study for the tests they are just extra.
I loved Gitterman and Policy 101. Professor Gitterman makes the material interesting and constantly welcomes students to come and chat with him. He clearly cares about his students and the material. After taking the course with Gitterman, I've decided to add public policy as my second major. Needless to say-- take his class!
Gitterman is the best professor I have had at UNC. His lectures are engaging, I loved it so much I changed my major. He makes somewhat boring topics(if you do not like history) fun and he tells funny stories. If you just pay attention and study you will be perfectly fine. There are 2 papers(one 2 page and another 10 page), but you have all semester
Professor Gitterman is easily one of the most caring professors I have ever had - he clearly looks out for all of his students (even in a 300 person lecture class). Furthermore, even though I was not very interested in public policy, I looked forward to every single lecture because he made class fun and interesting. Would 100% recommend his class!!
I love Dr. Gitterman! He made class interesting and educational. His priority is the students; I appreciate the way he makes things work for each individual. He is very accessible outside of class. He also has a great sense of humor. The exams are very straight forward and there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. I 100% recommend this class!
I love Dr. Gitterman! His class was extremely enjoyable and informative and made me realize that I 100% want to do Public Policy as my major, so thanks for that! I wish I recorded his lectures bc I would love to hear his information and life lessons again. The TA I had graded really harshly though, which was disappointing as I put in a lot of work
Dr. Gitterman is super passionate about the content. He sometimes gets a bit off topic but he knows a lot and cares about student learning and wellbeing. There's also a lot of room to work on things you're interested in.
This man is THE BEST. Easily my favorite professor at UNC. His lectures are engaging and interesting, but be prepared to attend always. He's well-respected and serious about attendance. Put in the work and you'll get great results. Can't say enough good things.
Best professor I had this semester. Cares about students, fair with grades, upfront about tests. One of my favorites.
Dr. Gitterman is the best! The class always felt like it flew by because it was never boring. He is very straightforward about what will be on exams. However, I will say, attendance is very important. If you do happen to miss a class, don't do the Poll Everywhere from wherever you are, he will probably catch you. The slides also won't be on Sakai.
I have never had a more fair professor. He clearly cares about his students and the material and gives "Top Ten" lists for his exams. I'm sure the exams would be hard if you don't study or listen because he doesn't post slides; however, he gives you every tool necessary to succeed. Homework is minimal. Just pay attention. (easy bc he is HILARIOUS)
I took this class during my first semester at Carolina. I would definitely reccomend this to new students. The lectures were really amazing and hilarious, and even though I didn't get an A, I am glad I took this class.
Gitterman seemed to be a really great guy and showed a deep care for Public Policy as well as Carolina Students. He is extremely sarcastic and has a unique sense of humor (I loved it). The tests are extremely fair and lectures are engaging. I am not a PLCY major, but still enjoyed this class.
Good class good professor - truly the gem of the public policy department. Assigns a lot of reading but you'll be fine if you skim.
I loved Dr. Gitterman for PLCY101! Despite it being a big class he still encourages you to interact and is a very entertaining lecturer. The study guides are EXACTLY like the exams and the assignments are straightforward. Only con is you must show up to lectures and recitation for attendance credit but this class should be an easy A/B
Dr. Gitterman is a good lecturer and very knowledgeable in his subject. Class is entertaining. He is a fair person and tries to be there for his students, even in large classes. It won't be an "Easy A", but if you go to class and do the reading, you'll do fine.
Professor Gitterman is amazing! Even during the rough semester, he kept our class engaged and went out of his way to show us he cared (donut party, split class in half, etc). Grade was comprised of a take-home short answer midterm exam based on readings, two 5/10 page papers, and participation. Easy course if you think creatively/discuss in class
Professor Gitterman is a staple of the UNC public policy dept. I respect him so much, and he is clearly passionate about the material. However, I didn't really know my grade in the class until the last week of class (only got two grades back before then). Still, he's a great prof who cares A LOT about his students. Def recommend him.
Professor Gitterman very clearly cares about his students. He always offers to meet with them to make sure youre getting the most out of the class. He also gives really good feedback on papers. The class required a fair amount of reading that was pretty dry but he condensed the info in class.
Dr. Gitterman is my favorite professor I've had at UNC. He is incredibly passionate about his policy and especially knowledgable about the topics covered in this seminar. He keeps class interesting and engaging. Class is fairly repetitive, but that's because he really believes in what he is teaching and wants to make the world a better place.
Dr. Gitterman rocks. 61H was not a super difficult class but you really do learn a lot. He cares so much about his students and wants to make sure each of us is successful both inside and outside of his classroom. Take time to get to know him and you can form a really valuable professor-student relationship.
Prof Gitterman is great! The class is a bit boring but it is very practical. He is so caring and understanding. The class consists of a take home midterm and final (he is very specific about citations - use APA). There is also a letter of intent (3 pages) and a grant proposal (8 pages). It is not as much work as it sounds. I would recommend it!
Dr. Gitterman really cares about his students and wants to make their learning environment as strong as possible. This class is definitely lecture heavy and projects dominate the workload. If you put in effort, you should get an A (although it is difficult to follow your grade).
Dr. Gitterman truly cares about his students, but at first he comes off as "woke". If you can move past this you'll see he means well. He hates that students are super focused on grades, and at times it felt like he picked a random grade to give(always within A or B range). He is head of the public policy department and is a good connection to have
He aint woke, hes just funny
W professor. Would definitely recommend.
Awesome professor, you will learn a lot in this class and can apply the skills you learn to any area of your personal life. I definitely recommend taking this class, you won't regret it.
I highly recommend taking a class with Professor Gitterman. His perspective is very interesting and he is also really funny. It is nice to have a professor that cares about you even after you take their class. He has so many connections! (Also to comment on his wokeness, it would be concerning if a PLCY prof wasn't "woke"... just saying.)
There is not much more I can say about Professor Gitterman that has not already been said. He is hilarious, incredibly smart, and you 100% need to take one of his classes if you are a policy major.
For the DC semester, he had great connections and was intelligent on policy. He was also often vindictive, unforgiving of small mistakes, and targeting select students in a way that made for an uncomfortable class environment. Efforts to connect with students, particularly those struggling, were minimal, and his tone was perpetually self-important.
Dr. Gitterman is the most caring professor I have ever had. From my first year seminar to my senior year, he has been so willing to support me. His subject material is super interesting and he is so passionate, it helps you learn and connect with the courses well! He also really encourages students to share their thoughts! His classes are amazing!
Professor Gitterman is awesome. He is fun and engaging and makes class interesting. He understands that we're taking other classes and does what he can to make our lives easier while also being in his class. He makes the content he teaches easy to understand. I highly recommend taking his class.
If there is any course or professor that I would recommend, Dr. Gitterman is at the top of my list. He is understanding, funny, and really passionate about the material. Work is not very heavy and he can accommodate you, if you communicate. Attendance and participation does matter. I think you will really enjoy this course and it will help you!
Gman is alot of fun to have as a Professor. I think his class really does prepare you for the real world and encourages you to think about the things that matter most to you! He is not really on email, but is accessible via office hours. His feedback can at first be confusing, but always meet with him. He will push you to think critically. No BS!
Professor Gitterman is engaging and cares about his students. The class is lecture-heavy, but the practical projects are worthwhile. I found unstuck study and the free textbook very helpful for studying.
Dr. Gitterman is a wonderful professor and person. He cares deeply about his students and has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share from his time in the public policy field. I learned a lot from his class and didn't mind the readings as they were interesting and applicable. I would highly recommend taking a class with him.
Professor Gitterman is a very good lecturer and does hos best to make sure the class is interesting. The semester long project is meant to serve as an introduction to policy overall, which is nice. Recitation is also pretty fun if you are comfortable discussing politics with your classmates.
There is one midterm (20%) and one final (25%); he gives you a "top 10" list before each exam and he literally pulls questions directly from that list. Your other grades are from attendance (20%) and a paper (35%) that you write and present on in recitation. My only gripe is that he doesn't post the slides. The class is pretty easy overall though.
Dr. Gitterman is a great professor. The class was super interesting and engaging. He will provide you with a list of questions to review for during the midterm and final, but those were easy. So, as long as you come to class, participate, take notes, you will do fine.
Dr. Gitterman is amazing. Lectures are engaging, organized, and relevant to the exam material. More importantly, you can tell that he really does care. I would highly suggest taking the "no multitasking" agreement seriously – just try it for a semester! This class is incredibly rewarding when you are consistent, present, and attentive.
Great professor with engaging lectures. Often put on music and led dances towards the end of the semester. Not many assignments so an overall really easy class you just have to show up.
Class is fine. Projects are fun and you learn a lot. Good chunks of reading but he tells you to skim. Caring professor wants you to succeed. Gets in your face a lot. Calls people out in the middle of class. HEAVY participation. Takes off points for project grades with no explanation. Overall decent professor. Kind heart but a little aggressive IMO.
Amazing TAs! He was funny and although there was only a few graded assignments they were graded fairly and the feedback was great. The office hours were very helpful! There are lots of reading but you only need to skim them in preparation for class. Favorite professor at UNC so far!
Daniel Gitterman was an amazing professor! He made the lectures fun and engaging. It's important to go to class, but I promise he will make it worthwhile. It has interesting content but does not go too in-depth because this is an intro-level course. I definitely want to take a class with him again!
Gitterman cares more about each student's success than anything else. Gives take-home midterm & final, just be sure to cite literature given as he was adamant about using it. Instructions were not clear for assignments but easy to figure out. Didn't think the class was too hard, but he has a bold personality that can take some time to get used to
Hilarious guy, caring, and knowledgable professor. PLCY101 was a great class with him and very enjoyable, but the content felt quite easy and barebones (to be expected of a 101 class). Grading was clear, he is VERY accessible on Calendly, and was overall a good experience! Highly recommend.
Super clear grading, but TA's make the grades! I had no problem getting an A. The recitations well prepare you for the midterm and final exam. Dr. Gitterman had hilarious lectures!
AMAZING PROFESSOR!! Super accommodating, understanding, friendly, funny, and brilliant! He really just cares about teaching you things you need to know for the real world, and his content is super useful. The class really is not hard, just be prepared to study before a midterm and final exam, but that's really the only stress of the entire class.
I loved this class and Professor Gitterman! As a policy major, this was a great introduction to a wide range of US policy topics. Attendance is mandatory as he uses the UNC check-in app. The main assignment is the policy brief, due near the end of the class, but he breaks the writing process down nicely to help students block time to write.
Dr. G was an extremely funny lecturer, and he made rather dense content enjoyable. The midterm and final are extremely fair, and completely based off of his top 10 list. TA's will probably make or break your grade though, but Anna B. was mine and she was very helpful and not a tough grader at all. Definitely recommend this class to freshmen.
Absolutely loved this course, super interesting if you like sustainable business, etc. Great connection to have at UNC. A couple essays and final presentation. Got us Purple Bowl at the end of the semester. Met so many cool people.
What a lovely guy who really cares about what he teaches
His lectures are very enjoyable, especially as someone who usually gets bored easily. Very respected in his field, and it shows with his expertise. Very little homework other than the readings. The midterm is completely based on his top 10 list. Take this class.
His lectures are extremely engaging and he genuinely cares about all his students. Only homework is readings, which you don't have to do if you just take notes. He tells you what will be on the exams so study that material and you will be fine. TAs determine grades but all of them are great. Policy brief is also straightforward.
Professor Gitterman was the best! Lectures are amazing and he is hilarious. You have a big policy brief due, but he does it in chunks so it is doable and not overwhelming.
Gitterman is a funny and engaging lecturer who makes class go by quickly. The grade is based on a midterm, final, and a policy brief, but he spreads everything out over the semester so it never feels overwhelming. Attendance does matter, but the class itself is very easy as long as you show up and put in a little effort.
Very funny, engaging, and chill. You can tell he cares a lot about what he is teaching. Gives a midterm and final exam study guide which are very applicable to the test. Not much work besides 2 small writing assignment and the final policy brief.
Dr. Gitterman is an awesome professor who provided a great seminar experience. His assignments and readings were super interesting and engaging, and he consistently aimed to provide us with unique opportunities and insights. This class was incredibly inspiring and made me think differently about various avenues of policy and entrepreneurship.
Gitterman is honestly so funny and chill. He's just hilarious and he also knows what he's talking about. His lectures are easy to understand and it's clear that he just wants you to succeed. He genuinely wants everyone in his class to get A's. We only had like 5 assignments graded but it's not difficult at all. He's amazing like truly.
Great professor. Really funny and very helpful if you get to know him. Would highly recommend office hours. He is a great professor overall.
Love Gitterman. You can tell he is very devoted to teaching and cares about making an impact on the students. If you put in the work you will be fine.
Amazing class, great professor. Incredibly knowledgeable about policy and cares that you learn. Used UNC Check-In for attendance, and would be engaging with PollEverywhere. Readings were manageable but you could go without doing them (but needed for midterm/final). Only real grades are midterm, SWA2, policy brief, presentation and final.
He is an amazing professor that cares about his students. A few assignments and a midterm and final exam but as long as you take notes during lectures you will be fine.
I loved Dr. Gitterman and couldn't recommend him enough! He has such a kind heart and genuinely cares about the well-being of each of his students. Class was also very versatile: "game-show" style activities, watching short films, hearing from guest speakers, etc. He even brought in the Clefhangers one class. So awesome.
genuinely made going to class interesting and his lectures were never boring.
Professor Gitterman has been my favorite professor so far at UNC. He's funny, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. Take a class with Gman if you can!!
Professor Gitterman is the best, he genuinely cares about his students and lectures were really enjoyable to go to. Policy brief was biggest component of grade and midterm/final were given a study guide that was close to exam. Take him at UNC he's awesome!
would HIGHLY recommend taking PLCY 101 with Gitterman in the fall. He is funny and caring and wants his students to succeed and have a good time with the class. There is a lot of reading, but if you pay attention in lectures you can get away with not doing it. The mid-term and final are based off a list of topics he the lecture before the test day.
Really just depends on your TA, as they grade everything (which is only about 4/5 things for an entire semester). Very clear outline for the midterm and final exams. Lectures get a little dry, but he's a very understanding guy outside of class.
Super easy A and hes genuinely an awesome person
Professor Gitterman is super knowledgable and experienced with policy and you can tell how much he cares! Genuinely loved his lectures.
Professor Gitterman is very passionate about the content and lectures are always interesting. He is so sweet, brought in donuts to class and even the Cleffhangers one day. Gman rocks. The class is not hard at all and he gives you a study guide for midterm/final telling exactly what will be on the exams. 1000000/10 recommend he is the best
Take this class if you're interested in Policy or need a focus capacity. Gitterman is super chill, and all of the TAs are chill as well. There's a policy brief, midterm, and final, and they're all fairly simple. Gitterman gives clear directions too. Class is actually interesting as well so that's a plus.
He is the goat. I loved coming to the lectures, he was very lax and communicated well.
This was a great class, and Professor Gitterman genuinely cares about his students! Class was based on a few papers, attendance, a midterm, and a final. The assignments had a clear grading criteria and were designed to build toward the final paper. The midterm and final were both based off a top 10 list he provided so it was clear what to study.
The goat. Really cared about his students as people. I had a disagreement with him about the way he broached a difficult topic and he took the time to meet with me and hear about my perspective. Absolutely loved the class. Super easy but valuable nonetheless.
Lowkey all grades will depend on your TA, but I know Gitterman gives them specific answers for the midterm and final. He assigns readings, but as long as you stay in class and skim the readings for examples: you will do fine on the midterm & final. Your other main grade is your policy brief, which is long but very simple. Easiest 101 class.
Gitterman is a great prof, very in touch with students and knowledgeable. Class if difficult but also getting an A is attainable.
Gitterman's a nice, funny guy and a good professor. There are only a few assignments, and they're not graded hard at all. He tells you word for word what's going to be on the exams, and all the answers are straight from the readings.
