Lecture attendance definitely isn't mandatory -- you can get all of the exam content on the slides he posts online. However, his lectures are pretty fantastic. He's a great speaker and has a very interesting way of presenting dull subjects. He seems like a fantastic, smart person in general. Tests were pretty difficult, labs were easy.
He's a nice guy, his lectures are long, and he'll try to get the class talking and thinking. He's not a bad professor to have, but his test questions are very ambiguous. It's hard to tell what he's asking sometimes, and the tests require that you remember random bits of information he briefly mentions in lecture. Doesn't grade on a curve either.
Dan was really into the subjects he's teaching. You can definitely score if you attend classes, do the readings, attend labs and of course put in enough efforts. He made lectures a two ways interactions, always giving chances to students to participate during lectures. Interesting add ons to the lectures too (special guests, current envr issues)
He's a good speaker and not the worst professor you could get. However, lectures are pretty long, and although his grading rubric is fairly straightforward, some of the questions are fairly ambiguous and could be answered numerous ways. *Be warned: he doesn't grade on a curve.
Prof Griffin gives long, kinda boring lectures with powerpoints but he flips through the powerpoint really fast and it is hard to take written notes but he will go back if someone asks. There are a lot of visual aids in his lectures as well as text. He gives assigned readings that pretty much re-explain the lectures.
Tests are graded hard, but the labs are easy enough. If you do well enough on the labs, you should get a B easy. If you want an A, though, you will have to show up to all the lectures, take good notes, and study a decent amount
For a so called "Lib Ed" Bio requirement, this class took up almost all of my time this semester. I highly recommend to avoid Biogeography 1403 entirely. The lectures are boring and do not even begin to encompass what will be on the real exams. The exams are some of the hardest I've ever taken here at the U, and I DON'tTeven need this class!
Dan did a great job as a lecturer. A lot of students found him to be tough, but I felt a lot of that stemmed from the urgency he felt to make sure his students could adequately discuss and argue the effects and science behind climate change. He engaged in class discussions with students and presented the information in interesting and clear ways.
Dan is a great professor, I really liked his lectures, as they were very interesting and he was very passionate about the topics. The labs were very easy and the exams were also not too hard. Just study a bit and read through the reading once and you will get a B.
Dan is an awesome professor. Just that he is very visual. He provides online notes though. It takes awhile to get used to his lectures, so notetaking can be complicated. I recommend a laptop. quizzes are rhetorical, and readings are required and on tests. Good thing? Tests aren't accumulative. Fun and interesting class, work on making lectures fun.
Dan is the best lecturer I've had at the U. While it's hard giving great lectures to a classroom of 300+, he definitely exceeded my expectations, you could see how much he cared about the subject. Labs were very easy, mostly busy work. Tests were harder than you would expect, but if you pay attention in class and do the readings, you will do fine.
Took the honors lab section for geog 1403 and was taught by him instead of a TA. Great professor, had clear expectations about grading and showed genuine interest in his students. Exams were written pretty fairly. Really passionate and knowledgeable about many topics, a big one being climate change.
Taking GEOG 1403 with Professor Griffin is one of the best lucky choices in my life. His style engaging made the lectures extremely enjoyable and interesting. The most notable challenges in this class like lack of textbooks and the picture heavy slides that make taking notes of what Professor Griffin says essential if you want to succeed.
Has great and interesting lectures.
Dan is always interested in what is best for students, but won't put up with BS. Tests are tricky at times but are generally manageable if you attend lecture and study. Great class.
If you are doing this class for the liberal education requirements, I would recommend you take another biology class. This class was so full of useless info and boring facts that you have to memorize and the exams are super difficult if you do not study and memorize all the facts. If you do not attend you will not pass probably. Boring lectures.
GEOG 1403 is not the easiest lib ed class you'll take, but it is definitely the best class to take for the Biology lab credit. Dan tests exclusively from lectured topics and assigned readings - so go to class and don't skip the readings, and you will be fine. Tests are tricky, labs are mostly busy work. Take the class seriously and you'll be fine.
Just don't take this class if you are not good at memorizing... the lecture itself is not hard but you need to memorize tons of things
Most useless. Boring class I have ever taken in my life. Boring prof
This class was great! I had an iffy TA, but that only mattered for labs (all of which were super easy). Daniel is a great guy and is very interactive. He gives lots of information and tips in his lectures so be sure to go, it's worth it.
Really cares about what he does and explains things really well. Has really good review sessions before tests. Only con is that he has a really soothing voice which can put you to sleep during lectures so bring coffee
Good prof, he seemed really angry at the start of the semester for some reason but he became better later because everyone stopped asking dumb questions that was making us be behind. Visually his lectures are the best I have seen. My interest was definitely stimulated by this course and I suck at science.
Dan made lectures really fun and engaging, and made a large class feel small, I always wanted to come to lecture because of all the extra interesting information that weren't on the slides. Take notes on readings!
Professor Griffin is a great lecturer, and he is clearly very passionate about his work. He can be intimidating at times, but if you show a genuine interest in the course, he's quite approachable. Go to office hours if you want to do better on exams. Do the readings and take thorough notes. You have to take this course seriously to succeed.
Dan is a good professor and is very passionate about what he's teaching. It's necessary to go to class, do the readings, and study or you won't do well at all. If you go to office hours, he's willing to talk with you about concepts you didn't understand and is more approachable than he comes off as at first. Overall interesting course.
The worst professor. He should not teach. My TA my barely spoke English and could not answer my question.
For a biology credit, I would recommend this course. There were a few readings, sometimes you had to finish lab assignments outside of class, and lots of studying for the exams. Prof. Griffin taught well for being in such a big lecture, but my TA was questionable.
I could not believe what a cake walk this class was. The labs were easy, the readings were interesting, and Dan's lecturing style was great. The tests were kind of complicated, but I barely studied, and the labs bumped my grade up a ton. I thought I was bad at science until this class hahaha! Seriously if you need a bio cred... take this class.
tough class
Dan was a good guy. He made a simple Lib Ed a little bit harder than need be but he was pretty good at lecturing. He assigned a lot of useless readings but only tested on the ones he mentioned multiple times. Lab sections were a breeze, you won't find easier labs anywhere. Overall Biogeography was alright.
Generally good lectures. Very passionate about his work. Labs were pretty easy. Tests covered a very wide range of topics, so it was mostly memorization. Slides were posted online which was very helpful for studying/missing class notes. As someone who hates biology, its a great class to fulfill the biology credit.
He always made his lecture materials very clear and was always open to answer questions both in class or in emails and office hours. He also tried his best to make coming to class fun and interesting!
Daniel Griffin is passionate about the topic which really makes the class. As long as you come to lectures and do the lab assignments, it is an easy A. I found my TA very helpful as well though some of my other peers were not so lucky. The only issue I had with this class were my lab partners who did not do a lot of the work but got the same as I.
Dan is a brilliant and smart individual. Despite class being in a massive lecture hall, his lectures are captivating enough to make you want to keep coming to class. His knowledge on Biogeography and Ecology is extensive, and he cares about his students' success, making many resources available to help you. Make sure you study for the exams.
If you take this class, do NOT slack off when it comes to exams. Take notes/ review the slides as much as you possibly can, there is no homework other than labs (which are very easy) and is about 100pts, the first exam is weighted less but the second and third exams are also 100pts each. This class isn't graded on much so try hard on exams!!!
Prof Dan is an engaging lecturer, however, I didn't find the class very interesting. You have to come to class to take notes because his slides don't have many words on them. The lab is alright, but more work than I thought. I would recommend taking this class Pass/Fail.
Dan Griffin was an alright guy, but his class is not very interesting. He makes the exams nearly impossible to do well on and the class has nothing to boost your grade outside of labs. Basically, if you do poorly on exams you do poorly in the class.
For a Lib Ed, this class is hard. Relative to major coursework, this class is easy. Dan is a very nice guy and explains the topics very well. Exams were stupid at times; they would have you remember very specific details in the multiple choice sections that just seemed like memorization. Would've gotten an A if I would've paid attention in lecture
Dan was a great professor, though the class is a bit hard for a lib ed. To get an A, make sure you do the readings and look over every lecture. His slides may lack words at times, going to class is helpful. Labs arent bad, though they can be long. Otherwise, an interesting class in which it is possible to get an A, with considerable effort.
Dan Griffin made Biogeography an interesting class for me, a CSE student, which I think is an achievement on its own. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory, but you really need to show up to learn the content because his lecture slides are mainly keywords. If you show up to lectures and take good notes, this class shouldn't be too difficult.
One of my favorite profs! Great lectures, a lot of relatable concepts and fun stories and videos. If you go to class and study, you will do well on the test. The labs are interesting, but all on computers. Loved the class, not even in the major
Just taking an online class with him. By far the best online module/lectures of any class I have ever taken. If you are interested in the subject, then this class would be easy for you.
As a person who does not typically enjoy science classes, I did enjoy how he presented his material and his class.
Dan was one of my favorite professors (even as a student not majoring in Biology, geography, etc.) He was also one of the most understanding and responsive professors to our needs as students during Corona and online schooling.
Dan Griffin is a great professor. Lectures are very interesting and he's super knowledgeable and passionate about the content. The only homework is a weekly lab and a short quiz. If you take good notes and pay attention to lectures you will get a good grade. Tests were all free response but the questions were always related to lectures/readings.
Took this online doing COVID. Lectures got to be long. Labs were easy if you put in the time. Griffin and the ETAs were VERY responsive. Easy class to get an A in and be done early since you can drop some of your lowest assignments, so start early! Work hard, don't cheat, put in the time early, and this is an easy lib-ed!
I took the online version due to Covid-19, so the feedback is mainly relevant to the online class. As long as you watch the lectures, take notes, and do the readings this class teaches you a lot and your grade will be fine.
Great Professor! The lectures were very thought out and presented the material in multiple ways to get the best comprehension. The class was interesting and held my attention. Class and lab expectations were clear and if you complete all of the content you are supposed to then it is super easy to receive an A.
Gives many chances to succeed and do well, show up for lecture and you more than likely won't have to worry too much about studying the material later on, overall a great professor
Am so glad I took his class! Dan is very clear on expectations and grading criteria for all assignments. Some assigned readings are fairly long, but the topics are very interesting and you learn a lot about the world. Lecture attendance wasnt really required, but you do miss out on material if you dont attend. Highly recommend 1403 with Dan!
He is an amazing professor and researcher dedicated to his study- I was inspired by his class and would take it again in a heartbeat! The class is easy (similar to high school AP Bio), but you learn things! Definitely take his classes you won't regret it
So nice- If I could get a degree by taking only his classes I would. So understanding, willing to be flexible, and clearly values students time - no stupid deadlines or assignments that aren't going to help you on the test
Dan Griffin is a great professor! The material isn't too difficult and the canvas page is very well organized. It is clear what is expected of you every week, and the workload is very manageable. If you put in the effort it is easy to get a good grade. I would highly recommend taking this class!
Professor Griffins lectures were very engaging and clearly presented. As long as you did the readings and attended class you will get an A. Usually all of the work for a week would take 1-2 hours outside of class. I would highly recommend taking this class with professor Griffin!
Prof. Griffin is great at explaining & breaking down concepts. He also has killer slides that are easy to study with. Going to his lecture just feels like learning new stuff in a chill setting, no pressure... which I very much appreciated :)
dan is super clear and reasonable in the way he structures his course and assigns work. he also cares a lot about his students and takes time to get to know them. went to office hours once about tech issues and he asked me how i was doing and how school was going on a genuine level. id recommend dan griffin to anyone great professor great person
If Dan was in my field of study, I would try to take all of my classes with him. Super relatable, makes the more complex topics easy to understand and a super appropriate amount of work for a lib ed
Daniel Griffin is a great instructor. The lectures were always very well organized, and most days you get out early. The lab for this class was also very easy. Grading in the class was also very lenient, although this might have been due to COVID. Overall I enjoyed this class, and the professor, and I would take it again.
Dan was a good professor, you could tell he cared about his students. Labs were vey easy. Tests were take home and took a bit of time, but weren't too difficult. Quizzes each week but also aren't too hard. I'd recommend this class if you are looking for a biological sciences credit.
I think Prof. Griffin was very attentive and was very descriptive of each topic we would go over. The exams were quite heavy, but there was a huge amount of time to complete them. The TA's were very helpful as well and were always available for support!
Not overly difficult, although there was a lot of reading. Lectures were engaging. I recommend the Honors component, as we had great discussions, went more in-depth on topics, and also got the opportunity to better know Prof. Griffin/the work that he has done. If the opportunity arises, I'll definitely take another of his courses in the future.
I took this class in the fall of 2021, Dan is a standup guy. The lectures were interesting. I also had Ben as my TA and he was also clear with his explanations. The lab was mandatory to attend, but lectures were streamed, not recorded. I would recommend doing the readings and taking notes as the slides have few words. Only take Geog1403 with Dan!
Super cool guy, pretty much everything is in the lectures which are in person and zoomed online. Open-note tests, clear grading criteria, and makes it very clear which information in the lectures is important. Class was a breeze and I still learned a lot.
This was the first semester the class was offered, so there were a few bumps in the road, but Dan made lecture and lab really engaging and always listened to student feedback. Most assignments were "if you do them you get 100%" and the labs/papers/final project dealt with real data/research, which I liked. If you get the chance, take this class!
Fun Class
interesting class that isn't very hard and easy labs
Griffin is great at teaching biogeography. His lecture content is posted online so if you can't make it you can read the slides afterward. no homework. open note quizzes and exams. the labs are all digital and you can easily finish them early if you and you're lab partner rush through them.
Lectures and Readings are important to pass the class, lectures are engaging and interesting if you happen to be interested in the subject matter.
A solid professor who grades fairly. With a reasonable amount of effort and participation, anyone can get an A.
Professor Griffin is very informative and interactive in his lectures. The labs while just worksheets are easy and fun to do. Lecture slides are clear and content on quiz's and exams are straight from there. Several readings that are required but do not take too long.
Make sure to take good notes during lectures because there isn't a lot of info on the lecture slides themselves. Lab can be pretty hit or miss depending on your partner and the TA grading you. It was a super interesting class and Dan is pretty fun! It is difficult to get in touch with him however.
The lectures Dan had were all very interesting, you can tell he cares a lot about biogeography and that he thoroughly enjoys teaching. If you miss a lecture he posts slides online to go back and watch, there are a few readings each week, which overall don't take too much time. All quizzes and tests were open resource, and labs were easy and quick.
His lectures were amazing! I took this as a libed and I wasn't very excited about it, but it quickly became one of my favorite classes! He remembers students names and is very outwardly caring for his students, even in a big lecture hall. The weekly assignments and exams were take home and open book.
Professor Griffin was one of the best professors I had during my undergrad. He is very approachable and an overall caring professor. The material is interesting and the labs are engaging.
Prof. Griffin is a very nice guy, and he is very passionate about what he teaches. He tries his best to connect with students and learn their names. Lecture content is occasionally boring and can sometimes go over my head, but overall not too bad since all assignments are open note + take home. Labs are basically just a worksheet each week.
Daniel Griffen cares deeply for all his students. He is passionate about his job. Lab attendance is mandatory, but lecture is not. The lectures are note heavy so take notes. Overall, it is an easy class as all quizzes and exams are open-note and online. I highly recommend taking this class as the teacher is a great professor and the class is easy.
An insanely chill teacher whose passion for what he teaches is clearly evident, but also is very much aware that most of the class is taking it only to fulfill requirements. He teaches the honors lab section himself and is a very nice individual overall. All quizzes and tests are open-note, with the lowest quiz and lab score being dropped.
D1 chiller
literally the easiest class, if you're a CSE student looking to knock out a bio lib ed, take this. going to the lectures twice a week is enough to get an easy A. homework isn't required for turn in and exams and quizzes are open-note. plus, dan keeps the material interesting enough. also labs are so chill! take this class
He is a good person with lots of researching and teaching experience. All the quizzes and exams are taken at home. Take notes and be careful all the time, you will get A!
Dr. Griffin is incredibly kind and understanding! If you need your biological science lib ed done, I definitely recommend taking this course. Lowest test score of the first two tests is dropped and the first two lowest quiz grades of the first 8 are dropped.
He understands that we are here to fulfill lib-ed requirements, and he teaches and grades accordingly. I did think the subject was super interesting though. I won't complain about watching 25 minutes of David Attenborough mid-lecture. Great guy, fun class. Wish the exams were shorter. took me like 5 hours each, though I did go above and beyond.
Never went to lecture, he posts all the information you need for the tests as they are online and quite simple
Good professor and better person. Cares about his field and his students as both learners and people. Have taken multiple of his courses and as long as you put the effort in to learn, you will do well.
He is really one of the best teachers I've ever had. Dan clearly cares about his students as much as he cares about what he teaches. He always checks in with us for feedback about the course and anticipates what we might struggle with. The lectures were not mandatory, but I never skipped them. I learned so much and was genuinely so interested.
I really liked taking this class. Dr. Griffin was an amazing professor and he made lectures fun and inviting. I can tell he's passionate about this topic and it made me very excited to learn more everytime I came to class. I would definitely recommend taking a class with Dr. Griffin.
Prof Griffin is a very caring, chill professor and excellent lecturer. Exams took about 3-5 hrs to complete, but are open note/book. Labs/exams were easy and graded very leniently. Quizzes every week but only take 10-30 minutes and are easy. Very interesting and easy class, wish I could take it again. He is a D1 chiller.
