Really hard to understand, but a nice guy... wouldn't recommed taking him
his heavy accent makes him hard to understand. he doesn't know how to answer people's questions very well. if you know your math from high school, it's not very hard, but if your math skills aren't that good, i don't recommend him.

You'll do well in this class if you are fluent in Chinese...other than that, be prepared to teach yourself everything. He is a very nice man, since all he knows how to do is laugh at everything you say.
What a great guy! He tries so hard to speak proper English (and it's so cute). My fav words to hear him say are "slope" and "what we have to do is..." He's very willing to help if you have trouble. Be patient with him, and you will lea
Nice guy, but has a hard time with the English language. If you are good with math, you won't have a problem. I don't recommend taking the class, but I mean c'mon its college algebra.

im glad he's teaching math and not english! very nice, very helpful.. great guy, just has some trouble speaking english... be patient with him.
i couldnt understand a word this man said, he cant even say calculator! this class had me so stressed out!all questions go unanswered. save yourself the time and emotional wellbeing, dont take a class with d guo...
what a sweet man. poor guy can't speak english very well, but bless his heart...he is such a nice person. be patient with him. he really wants for everyone to do well.
Very EASY class and he is very easy. I mean c'mon he only assigns 5 problems for homework, his quizes are at the most 3 problems, and his test are at the most 10 problems. Test and quizzes extremely easy. His accent is not that bad and besides he writes very concise notes on the board anyways.
worst teacher i've ever had. He can't speak english at all and doesn't know math. DON"T TAKE HIS CLASS
He has an awful Chinese accent and is very difficult to understand. When you ask him a question, he doesn't comprehend what you're asking so it goes unanswered. Material is fairly easy, but he is absolutely NO help whatsoever. NOT recommended!!
He doesn't speak any english. if you don't already know math. you won't know any by the time you leave him. i strongly don't recomend him
The prerequisite for this course should be Chinese 101.
He has a REALLY strong accent. But if you study the notes and do the homework and put some effort out, it's not that bad. Granted I had to teach myself a bit. He is really cute and a nice guy but he doesn't understand you either. He can't answer questions but he's not the worst teacher..he's alright
Alert Alert If you do not know chinese do not take him. Its bad to say but I could not understand him. I am sure he knows his stuff and is a great person you just don't know what he is saying.
I think he honestly cares how the students do, but he can't answer questions effectivly and unless your oriental you cant understand a word he says. And homework assignments must be turned in for a grade.
This man is extremely adorable but can be hard to understand at times. I just made the class fun by making jokes the whole time.. he didn't seem to mind :D He has an adorable little boy so talk about him and you'll be in good
Unless you are a genius in Math and just don't feel like taking Calculus, don't take this man! He is foreign and he is generally difficult to understand, has good hand writing though.

He's ok. you'll do fine if you study. He's just as hard as any other teacher. If you study his stuff you'll be fine
This man cannot speak english! Do not take this class unless you are very good at math and you can speak chinese. He does, however write notes on the board. His tests are only 10 questions and there are 5 question quizzes every week. He assigns homework and collects it. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Guo helped me with another Calculus class I was taking and I was very grateful. He will help you until you get it. He won't spoon feed it to you, but he will make sure that you understand it enough to do it on an exam.
well if you are taking this class for an easy math and already know your algebra youll do fine. daniel can barely speak english but the class is easy
first, Yes, very strong accent, but youll get used to it. he moves farely quickly in class but writes all notes on the board for you. weekly quizzes and homework. but not too bad of a class at all. be sure to study. its hard to get what he's trying to teach, or at least its usefulness is outside of class.
terrible teacher, makes the studentsw very uneasy about asking questions, not helpful or understanding at all. take this class if you want to fail. he wont curve tests or give extra credit.
He is a really nice guy but really hard to understand. Homework is due once a week and there are quizes every friday
Dr. Guo was very helpful, however his lack of English made the class extremely difficult. I am not a strong Math student and I stayed frustrated through out the semester. However, when I talked to him he told me to come by his office. Which I did alot. He was helpful although even one on one he was super hard to understand.
Dont take him unless you already know Algebra. If you actually have to learn it, this is not the teacher for you. BAD ENGLISH hard to understand
Difficult to understand. Teaching methods not quite up to standards. I dropped his course and will not take any of his classes again. However, he is a very nice, caring man. Just not a great teacher.
I took this class for a Basic Studies. I found it easy, because of my math background. If you are bad at math, do not take this class. Its work isn't easy and the teachers accent is extremely strong.
listen guys, don't even try college algebra with guo unless you already know it front to back. i learned the hard way trying to translate while taking notes. bad combination
i am just flat out no good at math, and this professor wasn't any help on that note, he is very difficult to understand and goes really fast when he's teaching something for the first time
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE WITH THIS TEACHER! You can't understand anything that he says, he goes way too fast, and he doesnt answer questions.
Do not take Guo unless you can understand broken english because he is chinese. The subject material is the same as algebra II in high school. Very easy stuff but unless you can understand him and do stuff his way then ur screwed. Do the hmk, he takes it up and gives you credit for doing it. Says everything on test is from quizzes, but is lying
I hate math, I can't understand half the things he says ("caculit" is calculator & "sooshi" is solution). you kinda get used to it after a while though. class starts off with easy stuff & then gets super hard towards the middle/end.
horrible teacher all around
very hard class if you aren't good at math. have taken alegbra before but his methods are very different. BE SURE TO GO TO CLASS! he may not tell you at 1st, but he gives bonus pts and drops low test/quiz grades if you have perfect attendence! SI sessions are somewhat helpful as well
gou is very hard to understand. his class is difficult because of his english. he is a very nice guy though. drops a few quizzes and replaces lowest test grade with the final. i wouldnt take his class again.
A nice guy who knows his stuff, but because of his thick (with thick being a huge understatement) accent, it's difficult to understand anything he does. He moves at a steady pace and is willing to help, as long as you haven't missed too many days of class. I only recommend taking a class with him if you don't mind referring to the text a lot.
Great guy with an accent. I wish people would talk back to him and actually tell him when they don't understand something- he is really willing to help. English is a 3rd language for me and I got an A in MAT 151, so it is not that hard unless you choose to complain about his accent all semester long instead of doing some reading.
He is good he writes things out, and he walks around the room to check while you do class problems if you have any questions go see him, he works with you he cares. I think that he can be a good teacher its just the effort students put in. if kids dont want to get over the fact that some teachers have an accent then it will be a problem. take him.
ok so he is a nice guy and he is funny at times but i would run far far away from his class especially if ur not a strong math student...u cant understand a word he is saying, his tests r hard, and he makes it hard to pay attention because of his accent...im taking this class again and its all because i didnt kno what was going on
I actually didn't mind this class. He is a little hard to understand at first but once you get used to him it's not bad at all. There is an attendance policy but if you miss more than 3 it doesn't affect your final grade, he just won't take late homework or stay after with you. Quizzes every week but they're relatively easy. I would take him again.
guo is not a hard teacher. the only thing slightly difficult is his accent but it's not that hard once you get used to it and he's a nice guy. i don't know why people talk like hes hard. he grades fairly and drops quiz grades and adds extra points for attendance! He's easy and willing to help.
Guo was TERRIBLE. He was unwilling to help even though I showed interest and a willingness to do the work. Hard to understand and awful at explaining concepts. I am good at math, but he is a professor that leaves something to be desired. Plan on reading the textbook. I WILL NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN!!!!! Take Terry Fleck or Linda Crump instead.
Dr. Guo is the worst Math professor I have ever had! DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you plan on spending alot of time in the Math Lab, and you like reading Math textbooks to teach yourself. GUO IS TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Dr. Guo! If you have a strong background in alg. 2 then you will be fine with Guo. He is chinese or something and is hard to understand at times but if you ask him to repeat something he will. He is so adorable and sweet. I would take his class again.
I literally never understand a word he's saying. He's not very good at explaining things or helping you understand how to get from one step to the next, and you'll end up teaching A LOT of the material to yourself if you aren't very good at math, which you aren't. I'm doing horribly in his class, I don't recommend it.
He is not a hard teacher, just hard to understand at some points. If you attend every class you he will add 3 points to your final grade. He drops the lowest quiz grade. He is more than willing to help you if you have a question.
I can't understand a word he says. He seems like he is willing to help but he is horrible at explaining things. He goes through the textbook verbatim. I am not incapable of reading myself.
Can't understand a thing he says. WOuld not reccommend him as a teacher.
This class is hard and he is hard to understand. I basically had to teach myself. However he does give study guides before tests and if you go to math lab and understand study guide you will do good on tests. The final is all the tests combined. He also gives extra credit for attendance. If you study, you will not do horrible.
Honestly his accent isn't that bad, you just have to listen more (which would probably help anyways). He assigns homework that is graded, but in the long run it is SO helpful come test time. His tests are easy versions of the homework. He does go through lecture quickly, but if you go over the material outside of class it is a breeze.
His accent is easily understandable. Tests are pretty easy as he breaks them into two halves over two days. Homework is assigned daily, but isn't hard and helps a lot for tests.
His accent is hard to understand and he does not answer questions very well. When you stay after to ask questions he just laughs. His quizzes are once a week but help for the test. He drops your lowest test and two lowest quizzes which defiantly help.
Too intelligent for a 111 course. Does not go out of his way to help you. Avoid if you can..
Once you get used to his accent, you have to get used to the way he explains doing problems, which is a bit confusing as he skips steps assuming everyone knows how to do things already. Homework grading is beyond tough. Graded for correctness and takes significant points off for very small errors such as a reversed sign. Avoid if you can.
Hard to understand. Messes up examples on the board. Not cooperative.
You'll get over the accent. However, he is not clear at all. If you ask a question, he answers it with information that has to do with your question - but it doesn't answer your question. DO THE HOMEWORK in 151, they count the SAME as quizzes. The quizzes are very short meaning and it's easy to do poorly on them.
Guo is super nice & always willing to try to reexplain something. You have to teach yourself though and there is def a language barrier. On exam days, you get back homework for the last three sections, and your quiz. That is a big scheduling prob. We had five minutes before the test to figure out what we did wrong and had nothing to practice with.
His accent is thick but you understand it as time goes on. He explains things so thoroughly that if you look back at your notes they are easy to read. He doesn't write every single step for examples but if you ask him to explain he will. Homework is graded and hard but the tests are simple, easy versions of the problems went over in class. Take him
Dr. Guo is a great professor. He is very approachable and makes the material easy to understand. He does have sort of an accent, but once you get used to it, it is not that bad. The homework can be a little tough, however, the tests are just easy versions of the homework and the examples gone over in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
Accent is nearly impossible to understand and skips many critical steps assuming you know them even if those steps are relatively new. He is very caring and wants to help the students, but does not acquire the communication skills to do so due to a MAJOR language barrier.
If math does not come easy to you, then do not take this professor. He means well, and cares about his students but he is difficult to understand. His English is very rough and he teaches too quickly and does not answer questions, he only repeats himself. Calculus is a difficult subject, but I think his class made is harder than it should have bee
He has an accent that is hard to understand at first but after a few class sessions it isn't a problem. Homework and tests are very reasonable as long as you actually put in time and effort.
Once you overcome the language barrier, Guo is a decent teacher who makes calc somewhat enjoyable. He is a very easy grader (i.e. partial credit for just putting some work down) and offers perks like dropping a few of your lowest homeworks. However, he is very intelligent and thus, has a difficult time answering your questions/ dumbing things down.
This class is very difficult. There is a lot of homework and quizzes 1 to 2 times per week. With that being said, Dr. Guo is very caring and wants to help all his students. He is always accessible and often moves due dates when asked.
TAKE 335 FIRST. Dr. Guo is a really good professor. The language barrier is actually not that bad. My real issue is that this class is almost entirely based on linear algebra, which isn't listed as a pre-req. If you do not get the book ASAP you'll get a bad grade. I got the wrong book (same title, different author) and suffered for it.
Bc of covid, this class had to be online and I just don't think Dr. Guo is meant to be an online professor. He was really sweet and wasn't a tough grader, but attending zoom lectures was pointless because he just read off the powerpoints without writing/doing practice problems. Not too hard of material, but definitely be prepared to teach yourself.
I like Dr. Guo as a person, but not as a professor. Weekly project meetings with him helped to keep our group accountable and on track, but generally the class format lacked direction and guidance, especially in the beginning of your research project when you need it the most. Some changes, like showing example papers, would make it a lot easier.
There is a difficult language barrier to overcome. Very heavy on lectures and kinda all over the place. Didn't really learn much, all homework, quizzes, and exams were online.
Honestly one of the worst math professors I have ever taken at UNCW. I am a mathematics major, and I have never struggled more in a class. It's not because the material is hard, it's because he literally cannot teach. If you are actually proficient in MATLAB, then you will be fine. If you've never used MATLAB, good luck.
Dr. Guo is one of the WORST professors I have had at UNCW. This man does not teach at all, you retain nothing in his class, and you have to teach yourself. To ask questions in his class is useless, his answers are condescending. He never tells you when homework is due, so you have to check it all the time. DO NOT take this class by any means.
As a math major, I actually really enjoyed this class with him. I feel that I learned quite a bit, and am much more confident going into MAT 495 which I will also be taking with him. He's a very lenient grader if you don't test well. Heavy homework load, so stay ahead. Take time to sharpen Matlab skills, as it is vital for this course.
Guo was an an okay professor, the tests were online but you just have to teach yourself the material. Overall it was a good class
I pray for his other students
He was such a nice person, he answers emails fast and helps whenever you don't understand something. I am awful at math but I passed with a good grade because of him! Homework, quizzes and tests are all online and some are open note!!!!!!!
I went into this class with an understanding of calculus, but this class has forced me to relearn everything I thought I knew. Even though I saw the negative reviews, I was naive and thought I could deal with it, but no. You would be better off not going to class and teaching yourself, which sucks because attendance is mandatory w/ max 2 absences.
Professor Guo is a very nice man but not as great of a teacher. His explanations are a little confusing and he overloads students with more information than they can handle. He has videos online that are insanely beneficial and make homework 10x easier.
Professor Guo is very sweet and tries hard on his lectures and to make sure students understand. All work is done through an online program called Pearson. There is a quiz once a week, 3 tests, and the final exam with homework assignments for each section. Overall, I would recommend him compared to other professors in the math department.
Bless his heart her tries to uplift his students but he is not a good professor. He is a very tough grader. Quizzes are every two classes. Doesn't respond to emails. He doesn't put grades in the grade book so no one actually knows if they're passing. Do not take if you get him for a class drop the class
Great professor, definitely a language barrier but cares about his students
Cares about students and gives opportunity to succeed, learned a lot this semester and found the class interesting.
He is a kind professor that cares about you a lot
Dr. Guo is a very great professor and he cares a lot about his students. I recommend you take him.
