He is a fantastic prof! So good. He is EXTREMELY fair, gives you the final exam topics on the last day of classes. Would 100% recommend, this man is a god. Very interesting, swears lots, and love his beard. If you want an easy mark and an good English class take him!!
No buying books!! Everything online!(saves money!)Dan is very laid back and teaches very casually. He tells you exactly what he wants for writing too, so if you listen to his guidelines you will get a good mark. Only bad thing is some sources are pretty long and boring. And like the other rater said, he has a cool beard in the winter! Recommend!
GREAT GUY. I hated english before this class. I am one of those people who hates speaking out in a public full of strangers, and reading out loud, that sorta thing, but Dan`s class discussions made me want to speak out, and by the end of fall I was taking part in most of the discussions. Super approachable and intelligent. Made my life SOOO easy!
HE IS AMAZING. I never really liked English as a course. I just always took it because it's mandatory. But the stories he makes you read are so interesting! He's also very clear on what he wants from you on an essay. You might have to read a little bit more than expected, but the stories are interesting so it's all good!
dan is cool. class was fun and interesting. 10/10 would recommend.
As far as easiness and getting good marks, great choice as long as you're willing to agree with whatever he says. Very unclear about deadlines, completely disorganized. Dan made me go from loving English to dreading every second of it .
He is very helpful and approachable. He was very understanding of my shy personality and was very accommodating with his deadlines and support so that I could do my best work. Great guy.
Great class. I learned a lot through this course, which helped me polish my writing outside of class. Dan is entertaining, laid-back and approachable. If you work hard in his class, you will do well.
Hated this class. He gave us papers to do every week and he was very disorganized with handing papers back. Like he would tell us he would return it next week and then he won't. You have to remind him. I hated English and I still hate it because of this class.
At the same time, I was also taking another English. I am not just another individual who is spiteful for receiving a bad grade as I got 3.7 in my other english. Dan is unorganized, a hard grader, and is not clear as to what he wants you to do. He marks extremely hard, the class average before the final was D. Would definitely not recommend .
Terrible! yeah, totally disorganized but what is worse is that he is completely intolerant of any opinion other than his own. To me that means he doesn't actually know what he is talking about. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid!!!
A very tough grader, especially to international students.
Not only did he have a stellar beard, he was probably the best professor I have had. Class was genuinely fun as we got to watch things like Blade Runner, as well as having complete freedom with the papers we were responsible for completing.
I don't know if it was because the class was WRS 102 but yeah his lectures were fairly useless. Nice guy and enjoyed his class. Just got to do the work.
Dan is the best prof I have ever had. His lectures are hilarious and his readings are equally as entertaining. Super laid back and loose with due dates. Hates giving a final, but says he legally has to so he makes it super easy. Swears a lot, very very funny, and his beard is on point. 10/10 would recommend.
He's very slack on due dates, just ask him for an extension. He is willing to help if you go visit him during his office hours! Lectures can be funny some days, while other days I just want to sleep.
I loved Dan! He was an excellent teacher who definitely was open to more opinions than his own. His lectures were interesting and the course material was unique. There was a lot of freedom with our final essay and as a result I got super into the topic I chose. I would recommend him to other students, he was definitely one of my favourite profs.
Dan's a great TA! He's super funny and awesome and replied to my late night email within 20 minutes agreeing to meet outside office hours to provide feedback on the day the assignment is due! He's real rad and gives good, clear constructive criticism. He also could possibly be the long lost brother of Ron Swanson. I would love to have him again!
Dr. Daniel's class is amazing, straight forward grading criteria, organized clear points for class assignments, plus fun class.
Thinks too much of himself, he literally said ( I hope half of you withdraw so that's why I want you all to read the first 150 pages this week , and please withdraw on the last day because I need less students ! )
Dan is a good teacher although his attitude is sarcastic. The textbook didn't help but google program taught what I needed to know. Clear grading rubric. Lots of paper writing was challenging but that is what I signed up for. I wish the course had more one on one (in person) or at least once. I utilized the UAlberta writing help offices.
Dan is an excellent lecturer. His course is in depth. However, he does swear a lot. Not that hard to gain high grades but requires to put effort in it.
Dan is an excellent lecturer. His course is in depth. However. Not that hard to gain high grades but requires to put effort in it.
Dan was a funny, personable guy who breaks down the prof-student barrier that exists within most classes, making things more casual. He gives really good feedback and is definitely willing to help, so taking advantage of that is really beneficial towards attaining high grades. Don't slack or get behind in this class and things will go smooth.
Dan's a really relaxed prof...a bit too relaxed. He often came to class unprepared and was not very vigilant when it came to grading. Flexible with deadlines, and pretty easy overall though.
his requirement is clear but he judges your homework by not following it. There is a commenting part for the other's work, but your comments are not good enough, you can not get the grade by your comment is not academic enough
Definitely would take WRS if you need to fulfill English credits. However, can we be real? What does Dan Harvey actually do besides stand there looking like a Duck Dynasty lost cast mate. He doesn't even mark the essays and takes forever to mark group assignments. He really doesn't even have a presence in this course. But nevertheless, I got my A+.
Dan is a very kind man who is very good about giving feedback and throughly answering questions you may have. He is not one to tolerate rudeness or students disrespecting others he definitely cares about his class. Although he does mark assignments he is very clear about criteria, and provides relevent material on eclass and in lectures.
WRS 102 is not too difficult and it's easy to stay on top of. It can be a bit frustrating at times because Dan can contradict himself from lecture to lecture and isn't really very organized. Be warned, he can be a bit sarcastic and come off slightly rude, but he's still really easygoing and overall a good prof.
participate in class cause there is participation marks.I had a night class with him and I liked it. His themes more like climate change and finances.I'm not into that but he made it easy to get a great mark if you put a little effort into things .Relatively easy marker and he is flexible o the final project but he is forgetful.
The marking of the assignments are fairly inconsistent, and they don't really explain the system of assigning the letter grades. For Dan, he is quite easy going and relaxed, but incredibly disorganized. Changes deadlines and in-class assignment scheduling on a whim. In-class seminars are 100% useless and do not teach a single thing. Easy class.
Very relaxed and nice prof, however he was was very disorganized. Course syllabus was reuploaded several times to fill in topic choices and adjust deadlines. Says the textbook is mandatory but it's very doable to get a good grade just by reading the sample papers and following the rubric.
Dan didn't play a very active role in writing feedback but nevertheless his expectations from each assignment was very clear. Hilarious prof, class is worth going to just for his jokes to be honest. As long as you listen to all the comments on your work you should be fine for this course.
Incredibly incompetent instructor, do not take. Marking is extremely inconsistent, unclear, and confusing. Assigns letter grades to each major assignment without explanation about what the letter grades mean (i.e assigns B+ on assignment without indicating percentage received). Does not follow syllabus at all.
A easy course to get good grade. If you are used to deadline fighting, WRS 102 is your class.
Dan is unorganized, sarcastic and not very helpful. He doesn't follow the syllabus (at all) and barely knows whats going on in the ONE hour class he taught ONCE a week. Easy going, chill but undoubtedly not professor material. You can tell he is a student. BUT TAs mark everything so it is the easiest class to get an A.
I took an evening class with Dan as the prof and it turned out to be one of the more enjoyable courses in my semester, honestly improving my writing style. He was flexible with deadlines, showing that he cared about the class and valued the quality of our work over absolute punctuality. His classes aren't cookie cutter, but I do recommend them.
I took his night class once a week and I enjoyed it. If you follow his guidelines it's easy to get a good grade as long as you don't slack off. He is flexible with dates and gives good feedback. Not sure if he is changing the themes he is teaching about, but I had finances & climate. Class discussions help with quizzes on online assigned readings.
I liked him. Funny, knowledgeable, gives constructive feedback. Easy to talk to and accessible. If you need to take an english/writing course, i would recommend taking it with him
WRS 102 was a fine enough class and in my opinion, much easier than a regular English course. My problem was that the seminars were really unstructured and they did not correlate with the syllabus at all. Be aware of his quizzes, make sure you have your reading done early because sometimes he will just pop the quizzes on you.
I was always bad at English since highschool but after taking his class it made taking English a bit more bearable. Although if you want to do good in his class make sure you see him during his office hours and attend class ask for his advice on your writing.(took a night class btw, probably the best choice with him)
Dan is a really funny guy and very knowledgeable on many topics making him a solid choice for a writing studies professor. The TAs mark all of your work but he's always replies to emails quickly if you have questions.
Course consists of 4 major writing assignments and a couple pop quizzes. Commenting online on peer's work is a large portion of your mark. Overall wide choice what you can write about for each assignment and not hard to get a good mark as the rubric is clear. I found this easier than other junior ENGL courses.
He's a very considerate prof, who understands engineering students' fear of writing; and a rare prof who's willing to extend assignment deadlines when students need more time. Lectures are interesting. In-class practices are helpful for assignments. He is pretty easygoing and gives lots of advices and feedbacks, so don't hesitate to ask for help.
WRS 102 is a good class, especially for first years! TA's are hit and miss. Dan agrees with his TA's so don't bother submitting for a re-grade. Four major assignments and no final. Go to class because there are in-class assignments that count for marks. The textbook is helpful (especially 1st years) but, you can do without. Takes forever to mark.
Super easy class if you just do the work. He's willing to extend deadlines if you need and gives really good feedback.
Harvey is a solid choice for ENGL199. He's quite a chill prof who with let you have as many extensions as you need, because he understands english for engineers is low on the priorities. He's pretty lazy but as long as you don't care about getting your marks back the next day the laziness usually works in everyones favour.
If you can get in this man's writing studies class you'll easily get an A, literally just show up to class for his in-class assignments (which are a completion mark) and listen to what he says as this will give you the material you need to succeed in the commenting portion of this course.
A pretty decent choice if youre just starting out at the U of A! It is a rather larger class (150+ students) but its not super overwhelming. Funny guy, makes time for students .
WRS 102 is an alright course, but Harvey is not the best prof. He is arrogant, and a bit lazy. The Ta's are also a hit and miss as well. There are also in class activities that you must show up for in order to pass the course. Proceed with caution for this Prof.
Beyond disappointed in this class. Dan is good person but is not cut out for a professional writing course. He is extremely unprofessional, disorganized and lazy. He does not give useful feedback on assignments (if any at all) and he doesn't teach anything. He gives a ton of in class assignments to "teach" you instead of actually teaching.
he doesnt do any of the grading in this course and doesnt teach that well. there seems to always be a gap in the quality that he teaches and what the TAs mark us on. also emailed him twice and he never got back to me in either of them....
this class is easy enough. You are basically teaching yourself and getting feedback from classmates and TA's on you writing (as well as giving feedback). DO NOT NEEDTEXTBOOK. Also you dont need to go to class to do the inclass assignments. they're just online in a google doc with all the instructions and you get a few days to do them so.
He was really good about giving extensions, usually gave them to the whole class rather than just one person. Not great at giving feedback or getting marks back (The term is almost over, no feedback or grades posted). Good class for science students as you have a lot of freedom with topics. Seems a bit unprofessional over zoom calls.
Harvey isn't a bad choice. He was a little unprofessional at times, but ultimately a good and relatable prof. The class itself is fairly easy as you're essentially graded on 3 major assignments that you have around a month each to complete. The rest of your grade is mostly dependent on the comments you give, so get your comments in early!
I would say he's a mediocre professor. He doesn't really teach much so it's hard to really grade him on that. I did find that him and the TA's mark slightly harsh. He was generous about deadlines however, and that was nice. He was helpful to me when I asked for feedback over email, but his feedback on graded assignments was basically non existent.
I thought WRS 102 was good with Dan Harvey, there wasn't really much for teaching as there was only 1 zoom class per week but he was always easy to reach and helpful over email (unlike many other professors, he was very generous always giving the whole class extensions and was overall one of the better profs I had this year.
My favourite teacher! I wish all my profs were as down to earth as him. You could tell he really cared about his students. He gave us one on one feedback sessions that were so beneficially for our major projects. He had a more relaxed teaching style but you still had to put the work in. If you can take his class, do it! You won't regret it.
Dan was extremely understanding of the circumstances students were dealing with during the pandemic and made it very clear what you need in order to do well on papers. There were lots of resources provided to guide you and help students succeed, making for a very enjoyable class! Dan is a very understanding and friendly prof.
He's really chill. Gave me an extension when I was in desperate need of one. Harvey's like a breath of fresh air compared to other university professors.
Dan really wants you to do well and is willing to spend time with you to do so, as long as you are going to work for it. The assignments are pretty simple and tests the concepts that were taught during the lectures. The big assignments are reasonable and alot of time is given just to complete them. Overall he is a prof with a big heart.
Great guy. made a boring class exciting.
A very genuine and kind-hearted teacher! His lectures are very interactive and applicable to everyday life. He prioritizes the students mental health and does not force class participation or assign too many heavy assignments at once. Definitely recommend, 11/10...
Dan is overall one of my favourite profs. Almost no other prof was understanding of the covid situation and gave priority to my mental health, but Dan did. He created a comfortable and safe space for all his students even in online class. His lectures and assignments are very interactive and his assignments are fairly easy to understand.
Dan Harvey is a great prof, he is clear with his expectations and the class I took had great teacher assistants. This class was heavy on peer review and giving feedback to students. The professor and the TAs will help you improve your writing and are very flexible. Be honest and if you show interest in improving your work, you will do well!
WRS102 is an easier class that requires less attention. There are 3 main assignments that each took 3 weeks and I've found some weeks busier than others. The class is very interesting because you can choose what you write about. The smaller assignments are a piece of cake and can be collaborative. Highly recommend taking it with vigorous courses/
Dan lets you hand in your paper for peers and TA to read and give feedback on before it's submitted for grading, which was super helpful, super nice guy, very flexible with extensions and gives you marks for commenting on others people work. Only 3 big assignments, one being a big paper at the end but lets you write about what you want. Great prof.
Lots of group work which gives easy participation marks. Two big papers that take up most of the grades. He gives lots of time to complete each big assignment but takes a while to get feedback to you.
Dan is a great prof. The course is just 3 papers with 10 small assignments. There is no final and the feedback is super helpful. You get to submit your draft paper to get feedback before submitting the final copy which is super helpful. You can also chose what style of research you want to do. Overall a great course.
Simply said, he is the best prof. If you can take WRS course for your science English requirement, take this class. This is absolutely for you.
The fact that I got an A in this class says a lot. Im a science student who did horrible in English in High school but did amazing in this class. If you are looking for an easy English class TAKE THIS CLASS! Work load isnt bad and there was only 1 zoom call a week!
My overall experience of this course is very good. I loved how there was only one class a week but I believe 3 hours is a bit too long for a writing or even an English class. He genuinely cares about his student's doing well in this course and he makes the course content a lot more entertaining and engaging with his humour and laidback personality.
Class is so light. 3 major projects and pass/fail assignments that you can work together on. Peer review is a large part of the grade (40%). Harvey is virtually not available outside of class- still haven't gotten a response to emails sent weeks ago. Asked for feedback for a project- never got it. Slow grader. Decent lectures. Nice guy.
As much as others recommend this class to be "easy", I found it to be very unorganized. There's other professors you can be under that'll get you easy A's. I do not recommend this class, I do not understand what I'm getting graded by and I do not find the lectures to be helpful.
I would not recommend taking WRS 101 with Harvey. Although his lectures were engaging, it was difficult to contact him outside class as he didn't have office hours. He was generous in giving extensions but I felt the grading was tough. More importantly, I was disappointed with the lack of feedback on assignments. Requested feedback- never got it.
Had Harvey for ENGL 199 and he actually made English enjoyable. He was a funny prof who kept you entertained and understands this is not a mandatory class for engineers. He's really lenient with due dates and easily accessible outside of class. Only downfall was that he does not give you much feedback on assignments, otherwise he's awesome.
Dan is an awesome prof! If you like blended learning and class discussions this is the right class for you. I had his three-hour night class and he always let us out early. There are readings for each class but it is doable. Dan is great at giving feedback and helping with assignments. I highly recommend Dan for any first-year students!
He was alright, although most of your work will be marked by TA's so your grade REALLY depends on who you have. Harvey is also a TA though (don't ask, long story), and he can be a tough grader. Other than that it's just an average, simple course to get your 6* english/WRS credits.
I only got an A- because one of his TAs was my grader for the entire term. I know that people who ended up with Dan as their grader ended up doing really poorly and with little feedback in knowing how to improve their work (not to mention his grade turnaround times are pathetically long). If he is your grader beware cause it'll be a long term.
Harvey is a very strong lecturer and works hard to engage the class. He takes the confusing world of writing and makes it easier to understand. He also makes it so that students don't need to buy anything for the class.
Lots of practical advice to improve students' writing was provided. He was accessible for feedback even outside of our online class. Can't speak to his marking, as he wasn't my marker, but he did note that he tends to mark harder than the TAs and harder on the first assignment, so note that. Frequently provided extensions, which was appreciated,
Dan is probably one of the strongest lecturer's in all of my classes. Also his English classes do not have mandatory attendance. One critique is he doesn't really give feedback on assignments, but you can usually just ask him in person.
Professor Harvey is a really amazing professor who can really develop your skills as a writer, ENGL 199 was definitely my most useful course in first year largely because of him. He is a tough grader compared to some other professors but he will give great feedback when you go to his office hours and show that you care about the class.
Highly recommend taking a WRS course over ENGL. Structure of the course makes for easy mark boosters, I did poor on the first paper and was able to improve. Lectures are pretty boring and I didn't find them to be very helpful but make sure to use Dan to help you. His personalized feedback was extremely helpful and I learnt a ton from it.
Dr. Harvey was really and I reccomend taking WRS over any ENGL courses. There was just a lot of homework done and it was time-consuming but pretty easy. His lectures are decent and powerpoints are prety helpful. As for the marking, he didn't grade any of my work but they were graded kinda harshly. Make sure to participate inclass for extra grades.
He is really good but uses peer review in WRS 102 which kinda blows.
As this course is not graded by the prof, there is a discrepancy between what he says versus what the TA wants. Your grade really depends on the TA and sometimes that does not go in your favour. The prof himself is pretty good, however disorganized.
WRS is probably easier than a regular English class but it was definitely still a lot of work. You'll have to find and read scholary sources for all of the three major module assignments which can be very long and time consuming. It isn't too bad if you can pace yourself. Peer and TA comments help steer you in the right direction for your drafts.
Rude, unprofessional, passive aggressive. He never responds to emails and when he does, the response is almost always passive aggressive to a degree. It seems that he thinks that students shouldn't be emailing him, as if it isn't part of his job to answer emails. Lectures are laid back. He is not a very professional person and he grades harshly.
Professor Harvey offers insightful analysis of class texts. His standards, while perhaps on the high end, are reasonable. He is incredibly lenient with due dates, and I felt free to take an extra day to make my essays great. He only responds to emails at the very last. He is very very funny. This class was a blast.
The professor had a lot of assignments which made it hard for me to even look at my other important courses.
Interacts directly with the class, not just reading slides. Always cracks jokes and course outline is simple. You do not need to be in class to do well, but I strongly recommend attending because there are always group discussions. He is also not strict with deadlines, for example if you need an extra 2 days you just need email him and ask.
Not a great experience. Peer review isn't an effective way of teaching. On top of that everything I learned in this course I don't use in my other courses. In fact, I found when I used what I learned from this class in a different course I would get lower grades because the writing he taught was outdated and according to my other profs "too wordy"
Harvey is a great prof but definitely not an easy marker. Two paper that each worth 30% is a pain, and I would recommend to utilize your time well and talk to him during class for recommendations. Attendance is not mandatory but I recommend that you show up and actively participate in class.
By far the best prof and the most amazing person I have ever met. Would totally recommend to take his class. He's one of the profs that actually cares about the student. I loved the class.
I love that this class only meets once a week, and the lectures have a 10% attendance rate. The couple times I showed up Dan Harvey was very funny and showed up in a completely different outfit. Sometimes, he dressed like a mechanic, sometimes in head-to-toe camo, once it looked like he had just come from a run. Overall great and interesting guy.
Not a quick to pass class you need to work really hard on the major assignments and too much informal exercises + feedback an all stuff really heavy workload on top of that he is a tough grader .
A fair course with ample time to do and revise papers. You have to commit some time to do the major assignments - attending the one lecture a week helps to understand the requirements and get tips/tricks. I had an issue with submitting my work and Harvey allowed it all to be graded anyways (+ responded quickly). He is caring, relatable, and funny!
Kind prof who cares about students. Very enthusiastic and made lectures interesting. Gave enough time to complete assignments, and I appreciated only having one lecture per week. However, major assignments are graded by TAs, so these reviews can only prepare you for so much. Overall would recommend this prof and this class.
Dan is a nice and chill guy who is willing to offer feedback as long as you ask. Definitely go to class to be on top of your informal exercises (groupwork/discussion), which are marked based on completion. Easy to follow guidelines for two reports with reasonable deadline. That said, he's a bit of a tough grader who won't be handing out easy As.
Professor Harvey makes this writing course pretty entertaining. The lectures are solid, and using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helps prep for assignments. Attendance is a must, but the workload is manageable if you stay on top of it.
Took in Fall 2023, Marking was hard, but was conducted by TAs. Dan is hilarious, friendly, passionate, and understanding overall. It is easy to succeed in his course without attending lectures, however you will see your success skyrocket if you attend (he gives tips on the assignments). The course is 3 assignments overall and is very fun.
Loved showing up to Dan's class (and judging the people who didn't). He's an understanding guy who is good at making connections either students. He does swear in his lectures (to make the class less formal) but never at people/ideas/out of anger. If that offends you, I would steer clear but if it doesn't you should definitely take his class.
very chill and funny, will give extensions with no fuss, engages in fun convos with students outside the course material, very high school classroom type atmosphere, loves to hear ur perspective on stuff, PERSONALLY GO UP TO HIM AND ASK FOR FEEDBACK ON UR WORK, kinda took time to grade stuff
Funny guy. This rating is kind of hard because all the marking was done by the TAs. I cannot recommend enough going to office hours, the marking for this course is hard so ask how you can do better. My grade significantly improved after I started attending office hours and asking for advice.
