Best Professor ! This was his first semester at UH, didn't seem like it though ! He was incredible, class is interactive and interesting. Made me like geology lol .. But HE IS A MUST TAKE ! There is extra credit given and if you make effort, you have to pass ! Homework and quizzes involved, 4 major tests. Everything based on PPT.
He is the best professor I had in UH this semester. Easy A if you keep up with your work and extra credit boosts up grade a lot. I recommend him he is awesome and helpful. I never thought I would become interested in this subject but he made it really interesting. Take him it's an easy class I promise you.
His lectures are clear, and he is very invested in geology it makes you want to become a geologist. His test are very easy and straight forward just study the lectures. I would take him again if i could. There is many extra credit opportunities and I would recommend the austin trip its FREE. Only 6 quizzes the whole semester and 4 homework's.
Dr. Hauptvogel clearly cares about what he does. He makes sure that each student is getting the information they need to pass the class with an A, and his lectures put info in a clear and concise way. Tests are heavily derived from the PowerPoints, so be sure to read those before each test. In a nutshell, this class is easy if you apply yourself.
Professor Hauptvogel is a great guy. He cares about his students and is passionate about Geology. I am a non-science major, but I really enjoyed this class. He is a fair grader and gives you all the info you need to get an A! Just study the lecture PowerPoints that he uploads and you will have no problem. He even gives a ton of extra credit.
Dr. Hauptvogel is a great professor and you can tell he loves geology. Most definetly cares about his students and wants you to pass. This was my first semester at UH and he made it go a lot more smoother then expected. Quizzes and exams are based of the lectures and power points so just study and you will do fine
Easy class, even for non-science majors! Lots of extra credit, 4 MC tests that you just need to review the powerpoints which he posts to study for and he drops the lowest grade.
If you're looking for an easy science credit, definitely take him! Textbook isn't required, tophat questions in class (pretty often) count towards your grade so that helps, four exams that you can study for with the powerpoints he puts up online, and so much extra credit!! He's very passionate about geology and truly tries to help where he can.
When I transferred here I was told the science classes were stupid hard and to avoid them. I got lucky with choosing him and the fact that he helps you out too. His powerpoints are class are to the point, he's nice, but you have to be in class. Even though he posts the powerpoints there's stuff that he talks about in detail. Test aren't to bad.
He LOVES geology. I found the subject itself kinda boring but I always paid attention just because of how into it he was. Uses tophat for attendance and has us do surprise assignments in class sometimes. TONS of extra credit, lowest test and quiz grades are dropped, and the tests are straight from the powerpoints. Easy A if you keep up!
He is a great professor who loves his subject and HE KNOWS HOW TO TEACH. Tests come from his PP and lectures, no book required, actually says not to buy the book. Uses Top Hap. Lowest test, quiz, and HW dropped and a great central Texas field trip that is 4 EC points on top of your final grade. Easy A if you take the time to study and go to class.
His exams are straight from the powerpoints, study those and you'll be fine. Clear presentation of material in class. There are also extra credit field trips and virtual field trips available.
Prof. Hauptvogel is passionate about this subject making lectures interesting. There are 4 MC tests (final: optional & not cumulative ) and the lowest quiz, test, and hw grades are dropped. There's extra credit that'll bump you half a letter grade. He also uses tophat, but only for participation. He's a great person and professor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Very passionate about his subject. Great field trips offered as EC. 4 (lowest gets dropped) non-cumulative multiple choice tests. Top Hat for participation. Study the presentations properly and you'll make an A. Quizes and in-class assignments once in a while. Not an easy blow off class, you'll definitely have to put in effort but relatively easy.
The pepper is accurate. Very. But besides that he is actually someone who teaches you the info. Amazing lectures if you're interested to learn something new every time! Not a GEOL major but I was actually interested because I'm an overall science geek but just come to class, ask questions, study and you will be fine. You have to apply yourself.
I took his 8:30 am class and his lecture were great!!! Didnt put me to sleep, they were very interesting lectures. He only has 4 tests and if your grades good you can opt out of the final. He only has a few homeworks and some in class assignments. Amazing professor. I would highly recommend. He also tells you right off the text book isnt needed.
The dude below who said "8:30 am... he did not put me to sleep" is lying, I was in his 8:30 am class he put the majority of the students to sleep. His exams are structure like this, whatever you answer is to the first question the 6 following questions after that will be towards your first answer. You get the first question you wrong, it's all wron
If you complain about this class being too hard then the rest of college will be miserable for you. This class was SO easy. Show up and actually listen and take notes if it helps. Study for the tests and youll do fine. Dont be a lazy college student and then blame your grade on a great professor because he doesnt make the class difficult at al
Boring lectures but it's geology... overall he is passionate about what he teaches. Study and you will do fine. Anyone who complains either doesn't study or never went to class. Go because he has in class work. HW and quizzes are easy. 4 tests, one dropped. Great professor, too bad the subject is dull. He did the best he could.
Awesome professor who's passionate about his class and has great lectures, I learned a lot about geology. He gives extra credit and be sure to study the powerpoints for the test. Also be sure to attend class because there is participation activities sometimes.
Over rated. Reads through the powerpoint and is super petty. Literally saw there was hardly anyone in class one time so the next class he did a TopHat where you could only submit your answer if you were within the location. Tests are nothing like the powerpoint's. He's only there for the research and money, and doesn't care about the students.
Material is interesting if you just want to learn something new and different. Go to class for top hat questions and possible in-class assignments. Study the ppt and any notes you take. Tests have no trick questions as long as you study at least for a couple hours. Earn your grade, he helps you out as much as he can with the 6 extra credit pts
Great class. The materials are easy to understand. The tests are pretty similar to the power points and you can earn extra credit towards your final grade by going to field trips and doing other activities.
Good professor - he will answer any and every question and doesnt mind explaining in detail. With that said - his lectures are super boring. Just PowerPoint that he basically reads to you (with some extra commentary). Book isnt needed, and your attendance is graded in a few ways. Good course, good professor.
Top hat questions so attendance is mandatory. If you pay attention and take notes and look over his slides before exams it should be an easy A for you. Offers up to 6 points extra credit so take advantage. His lectures are interesting and he explains everything well. Has a few quizes/hw and a few in-class assignments as well. Great professor!
This class was so boring!! All he does is read over the powerpoint and then you have to be in class so that you don't miss the attendance questions. Honestly when ever I looked up everyone looked dead or were on their phone. I would still take this class because it was fairly easy.
Take his class!!! He is the best professor ever!!! All his test are based on what he teaches. Just study for the test and you'll be set. I took his class at 8:30 am but it was worth it. He's super funny too.
I had to take this class and I was dreading it, but Hauptvogel made it my favorite that semester. He was an amazing professor and made the material interesting. He uses powerpoints in his lectures which he posts on BB, but goes into more detail during class. He does offer extra credit and drops one test grade. Exams are fairly easy. No textbook.
Reads off the power point, does in class assignments and top hat. Be on time or you might not get an assignment. Exams and assignments are harder than they should be. Up to 5 points extra credit. Would recommend if your major is geology.
10/10 would recommend! His exam review is exactly what is going to be on the test. Gives up to 5 points extra credit. Weekly online quizzes and homework but theyre quick and easy. Hes pretty funny and nice.
The negative reviews are not accurate at all.. I think this professor was very good UH, but some people think college should be a breeze. There are a few homework assignments but he gives you assistance. I would say this is one of the easiest courses at UH. There are also so many extra credit opportunities and he drops the lowest test!
The guy is a good professor, only the content is pretty boring. There are many oppurtunities for extra credit. There are 4 exams, and the lowest is dropped. 6 quizzes, 6 hws, 6 in class assignments.
fine af. his lectures are pretty good, but the tests are kinda tough. he provides the powerpoints so make sure to memorize every slide if you want an A. very lenient on extra credit, you can get bumped 5 whole points. ex. 85 can turn into 90 if you do all the extra credit. homeworks are okay. knows what students like and don't. great professor.
He really knows how to make lectures engaging and gives you plenty of opportunities for up to 5 points in extra credit by attending tours. Three tests with a fourth optional to replace your lowest test. 6 online quizzes and 6 hws you turn in online. Posts lectures online but has attendance through TopHat. Easy A if you stay on top of online work.
enthusiastic professor. great class
Best professor/instructor I've ever met.
Professor (I can't even spell his name so I'm not going to try) really is a great professor. For a class about rocks, he sure does his best to keep his students interested. The course is very easy, but be ready to study for the exams. They aren't as easy. As long as you can do well on those, this should be an easy enough class.
Great professor. Funny and caring. He made lectures interesting and knows his info. Course is fairly easy, but you must study for tests. I recommend having a group of friends to work with on in-class assignments and homework. He offers extra credit and drops the lowest test score as well.
He's a cool dude, and his lectures aren't super boring. His tests are straight out of the powerpoint. His extra credit goes towards your final grade, but if you don't show up then you get points taken away. Class isn't mandatory but there are top hat and in-class assignments that could really lower your grade if you don't go/do.
He is really fun and sweet, a really cool guy. He tries to make the class as interesting as he can, but rocks are just not interesting! There is attendance points. He is very straight forward and I would definitely take another class with him!
He's cool and really tries to keep things interesting, but geology is tough to keep many entertained. His lectures are available online and are a huge help for filling out review sheets for the exams. Attendance matters because there's TopHat questions and in-class assignments which count towards grade. There's also plenty of extra credit chances.
He does a really good job at trying to make the class interesting. He is a really cool and nice guy. There was 4 exams, but he drops your lowest test grade. He has quizzes on blackboard & homework. For in-class assignments he doesn't say when he will pass them out so try to attend all his lectures.
Do the extra credit trip!!! Gave me that final boost. Work through the test reviews and you'll be fine. Lowest test is dropped!
Great professor! Tries to make lectures interesting. 4 exams, lowest one is dropped. There is plenty extra credit opportunities. He has TopHat questions so make sure to attend class.
Nice guy and an easy A. Class comprised of just learnsmart readings, 6 assignments, 1 project, and 3 exams.
The best professor I've had at UH. He is amazing, definitely recommend if you are in need of a science course. I needed an extra science course and took his natural disasters course simply because I wanted him as a professor. He is really sweet and organized. His exams are based on the learn smarts completed and powerpoints presented.
Great professor. Enthusiastic and explains things very well. Exams and assignments are pretty straightforward.
He is a really good teacher, the only thing you need to watch out for in the GLC HW because they kits will get messed up and when you go to do the HW in there everything is out of order and you'll get a bad grade. The 4th test isn't required if you're happy with your previous 3 tests or he'll replace the lowest grade with test 4.
Professor Hauptvogel is an amazing professor. If you need a credit for Life Science, I recommend taking him. He is an engaging lecturer and has deep knowledge of the subject he is teaching. Taking Professor Hauptvogel is a once in a lifetime opportunity that you won't regret.
Awesome teacher for GEOL1330. Cares a lot about the subject (almost too much), lectures are very helpful but he will talk until the very last second. Tests can be pretty hard but do the reviews he posts and look over the lecture powerpoints (3-4 lectures per test) and youll be good. Optional field trip to Galveston as well for extra credit.
Very passionate and knowledge professor, the lectures were a bit long sometimes but he always helped to breakdown information and make it easily understandable. Definitely use the review sheet he gives for exams and make sure to study a substantial amount. If you work hard on first three exams, he drops the last one. A lot of extra credit offered!
Professor Hauptvogel is the best geology professor at UH. He gives lots of extra credit inc up to 5 extra points added onto your final grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, its extra credit but if you don't go you won't pass because of In-class assignments. He's a nice guy and he makes his lectures interesting. The tests are easy IF you study.
By far the best professor I've taken. Very simple, everything on the exams is in his lectures! Show up for TopHat and you get extra points on your exam. The lowest exam grade gets dropped. The 5 hwks assignments and 6 quizzes are very doable. There are 5 in-class assignments too that are easy. literally just take him.
I've had him both for Geology and Natural Disasters He is simply amazing and really fun to listen to and also very humorous. Gives tons of extra credit and always responds to all his students. He is very helpful and also funny in the class GroupMe. Definitely recommend him.
Loved Professor Hauptvogel! I took him in Fall 2020 for Physical Geology and the only reason I didn't hate that I was learning about rocks was because of him! There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, Top Hat, and his lectures are actually not boring! There are also pop-up in-class assignments so make sure you attend class when applicable!
He was really an amazing professor. I had him during the pandemic (switched to online classes mid-semester) and I had no problems with the transition in his class. He gave out a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester (before pandemic). The tests were pretty easy if you studied his study guide. You should take him!
If you're looking for an easy science class, Natural Disasters isn't that bad. There's a lot of homework. I made an 85, 100, and an 87 on the three exams and I still managed to get an A in the class. Do not miss any of the smartbooks and take a few hours of your time to work on the Assignments. Not quite an easy A but not too challenging either.
I took him for Fall2020, DEFINITELY recommend. This class was online this semester and he was accommodating and understanding. I'm not a geology major, but he makes the lecture so interesting I'm taking natural disasters next semester with him too. He is very passionate and knowledgeable, his PowerPoints reflect exams 100%. Extra credit offered!
Best professor. Easy class too. I usually fall asleep during lectures but his lectures are fun and easy to understand. There's even a lot of easy extra credit opportunities which is nice.
350 characters is not enough to describe how absolutely incredible Prof. Hauptvogel is. First off He's real easy-going and he makes his written lectures very easy to understand, and they cover basically everything that you will be doing in assignments, quizzes and test. AND IT'S ALL OPEN NOTES! GEO isnt my major but I like it cause of him, TAKE HIM
You'd be foolish not to take Dr. Hauptvoghel either for geology or natural disasters. He's phenomenal in the way he teaches and he's one of the fairest professors ever, only quizzing and testing students strictly on information presented within the lectures and the slides. As long as you pay attention to what he's saying, you're golden.
I took this class during covid. I also took his natural disasters course. Attendance not required but u get extra credit if u attend class. 6 assignments. 3 exams. Weekly quizzes over previous lectures. If u do well on those exams& like your grade, u dont have to take the final. Has EC at end of sem. Pretty chill prof. 10/10 would recommend
Attendance not required. Use ctrlF for PowerPoints and youll do good on exams. Its easy and you dont need to study because of ctrlF. Its a easy A if you do things right. The class has extra credit but not a lot unless you want to put a lot of time into it. Its the easiest science credit you can get for the core courses requirements. Its easy.
Amazing lectures. The man made a class about rocks my favorite class this past semester. The tests and quizzes were open note. A lot of extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester. Easy A.
Great Prof. Dedicated to his teaching. He is one of the professors that I've taken that actually cares about what he teaches. Take him for Geology and natural disasters if you need the credit!
I'm a geology major and Haupt. was amazing. 4 tests, but one is dropped. I forgot about a couple quizzes and that brought my grade down a lot. Material is straight from the lecture slides and everything was open note. No lockdown/monitor. Very stress free class that I learned a lot from. Easy A as long as you keep track of assignments.
There is a weekly quiz, but it is OPEN NOTES and there is no lockdown browser. Very funny and digestible lectures. He has a gaming chair and double monitors btw. Also opportunities for tutoring + extra credit. Just make sure to keep up with work. He is passionate about teaching & I know quite a bit of rock facts now.
He was an amazing professor that made me enjoy a class about rocks. He allows for many extra credit opportunities and only 4 exams but drops the lowest test score. I would take his class again and Im planing to take his natural disasters class this semester.
Do the extra credit for the assignments and ask for help on them. All of these reviews are accurate, he is a really great professor. I just wish we went more in depth on different natural disasters instead of just the pre made lectures from the book.
Dr. Hauptvogel's an amazing professor to take for Natural Disasters at UH as I'm enthusiastic in natural disasters! There were 4 exams, and they are easy-going that can be found anywhere, even not on txtbk! We also have group projects in this class. Highly recommend. BTW, there were around 450-500 students in class, so that was a great opportunity!
The rock prof is an amazing professor, probably the best I've had. Very laid back but not too laid back to where you don't learn; you learn a lot in his class. The textbook was boring but the lectures were dense in content and he didn't speak in a monotone voice the entire time. Overall, this prof and his courses are a major go.
This is a very manageable class, the professor is very active on the class groupme and helps everyone. The class grade is based off 4 exams, bi-weekly assignments, online reading assignments, and lastly a final group project. Everything mentioned is fairly easy since a lot resources are available online.
Pretty cool guy who is engaged with his students, but you definitely gotta work for your grade in this class. The material is interesting, there is a group project worth 20% of your grade, readings every week or so, and assignments that use excel and google earth.
this class consisted of 4 exams (final optional), weekly learnsmarts, excel sheet assignments, and a group project. i took this class thinking it would be an easy A but u do have to work for it - as long as you show up to class, turn in ur assignments, & take notes, you'll do fine. he was active in the group me and was really laidback/easy going
I didn't put much effort into the class and managed a B out of the class. The class isn't that hard.
This is an amazing class to take if you want to get your core requirements out of the way, but you don't want stress. The only thing is the quizzes are only open from 9 am-9 pm on whatever day is due. No late work. Put your assignments on a calendar. Lectures are simple and enjoyable.
Would definitely recommend taking his class. It is an easy grade and he is very nice. You can tell he really loves his job and students. All assignments are open note, lectures are interesting and easy to understand, even offers extra credit. Simply put, his class is hard to fail
Never had such a passionate professor before. Seriously Outstanding. This guy explains things like you're 5 and is extremely reasonable with all assignments and tests. No lockdown browser was a huge plus. If you need a science credit take his class.
Dr.H was a great professor overall and really made me want to learn about geology. He was one of my favorite professors by far and gave all of his students the tools to succeed. I found myself talking about how the hawaiian islands were formed over dinner after one of his lectures. He was so great at explaining concepts and conveying ideas.
His physical geology class is interesting with types of rocks to learn when you take with him! This is for the Life & Physical Sciences Texas core credit. Take Natural Disasters with him too if you haven't taken that course yet! He gives extra credit opportunities by virtual trips and/or class evaluation. Tests weren't that hard when u have notes.
Very nice, funny, and intelligent professor. 4 exams (lowest one gets dropped), 6 assignments, and 12 quizzes (lowest one gets dropped). Attendance is not mandatory. Study for tests.
Great professor, he cares about his students and gives you everything you need to succeed. There were a lot of quizzes and assignments but they were usually not that difficult. His lectures are entertaining, you won't fall asleep lol! I highly recommend taking him. He also gives plenty of extra credit options.
You wont need to read the textbook(its free, no access code), all you need to know are his lectures. Hes an amazing professor & makes geology easy to understand. His deadlines for quizzes & tests are from 9am-9pm so dont miss them!! He does drop a quiz at the end of the semester & Exam 4 replaces lowest score. No cumulative final.
Professor H is so passionate about teaching and has great lectures. You can tell he cares about the success of his students. I'll be taking him again next semester because I enjoyed his class and teaching style so much. The class consisted of weekly quizzes, occasional assignments, and exams. You can go to the GLC for extra help in the course.
Looking to take a life and physical science course at UH? This is the right professor to choose. I love his humor when lecturing, and the flexibility in this course. He's the reason geology is fun for me.
my favorite proffesor. hes makes class fun. his work if fair and easy. not a heavy load at all. if you complete all of the assignments and turn everything on time its an easy A.
Professor H. is an amazing teacher!! I've done both his Physical Geology and Natural disasters course and could not recommend them enough. Lectures are very engaging and he is a nice person as well, you can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches. Smartbook homework, 6 assignments, and 4 tests. Open-note, no lockdown browser.
Super passionate and made the class very interesting and not to hard!!
By far the best and most helpful prof I've had at UH so far! Very easy to communicate with and does his best to make sure you pass! 10/10 class.
professor is good and class is easy
Attendance not mandatory, but if you go you get up to 3 EC points on your tests. Natural Disaster class was harder than his PhysGEOL one, but still enjoyed it. Weekly assignments due + SmartBook readings + 4 Exams, lowest dropped. He gave some extra readings to do as EC towards the end. Probably one of the best lecturers I've taken at UH. Easy A.
Professor Hauptvogel is an overall great professor! His class is very easy as long as you apply yourself. Also, he drops grades and gives extra credit. Failing is practically impossible unless you really do not do your work. There are smartbook quizzes, assignments, and exams. Reading is not necessarily important to the course, but can help.
Great professor, Great class. Though the homework is tough, that is the only hard part of the class. He gives out free EC by attending class and doing smart-book readings. Open book tests using notes. Never regret taking this class.
Dr. H is the best. He's passionate about geology and makes his lectures exciting. Natural disasters is harder than physical geology, but I still recommend taking the class. The class consists of smartbook readings, quizzes, tests, and assignments (all open-note). He spaces out his course so it's manageable and the TAs in the GLC are a huge help.
This class is not hard if you pay attention in class and read over the slide. Textbook is required for the weekly quizzes but the quiz itself is super easy. This professor makes this class super fun and easy to follow, though the homework is changeling, and it is the only hard part in this class. Give multiple extra credit during the semester.
If you need a blow-off science course, this is it! He knows it is and sometimes jokes about it. Same routine every week, tests are open note. Assignments are a bit challenging, but they make you actually pay attention to the class. Very chill and relaxed class, wish I could take it every semester.
Dr. H rocks! Extremely clear and funny lectures, with a good coverage of the class material and with an open-source (i.e. free!) textbook to boot. Neither homework nor the tests are particularly difficult as long as you attend lectures and take notes; Dr. H makes it easy to pass as long as you pay attention. This class is a blast!
Very cool professor. Easy class. 10/10 you should take it.
Dr. H is great! This is my favorite class so far. There are 4 exams throughout the semester, the lowest of which gets dropped at the end. Assignments and quizzes aren't too difficult. You can earn up to 5 points of extra credit added to your FINAL GRADE. The easiest way to do this is by attending field trips, but there are virtual options as well.
He is one of my all time favorite professors, so take his class. He respects his students and answers questions very kindly! I hope to take more of his classes in the future :)
Assignments and quizzes are due on the last day of class, so you can do them whenever you want, but tests are hard dates. His lectures are good and makes them entertaining. There are 4 exams and he drops the lowest grade at the end of the semester. Can earn extra credit of up to 5 points for the final grade. Should definitely take him if you can!
100% recommend Dr. H, he made lectures very interesting and was always available after class for questions. There were also plenty of extra credit opportunities, and a good sized workload. All assignments were due on the last day of class giving balance for those with a busy schedule.
Great professor and an easy A class. Up to 5 points extra credit
This professor makes the class super easy. All assignments and quizzes are made due on the last day of class. All tests are open-book. You can earn extra credit by attending the field trips (even if you don't attend, keep in mind that it is included in your tuition fees).
If you are looking to take an easy science core class for the spring, this is probably the one to take. Professor Hauptvogel is a great professor who has his quizzes and tests online to make it easier for all of us. He did a good job making his lectures more interesting than they probably were. Overall, decently easy class with a great professor.
An easy science core class to take especially if your not a science major and Professor Hauptvogel is good at making the stuff easy to understand. Stuff from his lectures can be important for quizzes so keep that in mind but the content overall is not too hard.
Professor Hauptvogel is a very cool professor. He is nice and offers extra credit. However, we had 6 assignments that were somewhat long, graded by the TA's. They took off points for the smallest things. The class is not an easy A, maybe an easy B. There is quiz almost every week, 10 questions and 15 mins. Exams are 50 questions and only 60 mins.
Daniel is a great and interesting lecturer that makes the material very understandable. There are GLEs and quizzes (15% for both). 6 assignments involving analyzing from Excel and Google Earth (30%). Finally, 4 Open book exams (40%). The exams are much easier than the quizzes, and they correlate to the lecture slides well. Take him. He is the GOAT.
4 Tests and the lowest one is dropped. I 100% recommend going to class as as long as you hear what he says the tests will be 100% easier and they're open notes/slides/book. Just ctrl f the slides tbh. He's funny and super entertaining. If you need electives or a science credit this professor is perfect.
If you aren't a science major, this is the class for you. He's very chill, the lectures are cool and all the quizzes and exams are open book, open note. You don't have much time so you do actually have to know a lot of the material. But if you pay attention in class, this class is a cakewalk.
This professor is awesome, he is a good lecturer and the quizzes/GLES are easy, there are a few assignments that will be a bit complicated, and the TA's are very picky when grading, the exams are just like the quizzes but longer and you actually need to know the material since you get 60 minutes to answer 50 questions, he also provided extra credit
So easy.
Real good prof. Exams were a tiny bit hard but if you study the material its an easy A. Amazing professor.
I have no interest in Geology but wow, his lectures are fun to listen to. He makes them exciting and not flat and boring. His voice is loud and clear. Homeworks are fairly graded. Quizzes can be tough sometimes. Tests are timed online but open book. Loved his class as a CS student. One test is dropped, so you can skip one if needed. Very nice.
The professor is amazing, lectures are fun and engaging and you truly do learn. The hard part of this class comes in the Excel Assignments, they are incredibly tedious and require at minimum a few hours to complete. Issue also comes with the TA's, all of which grade horribly. Quizzes are a little hard, but the rest of the work is super easy.
Tests are almost completely based on lectures, pretty easy to get an A. He has great lectures. My complaint about this prof is the Excel assignments. These were multiple difficult lengthy assignments to complete, and the TAs were brutal graders. Ultimately, the assignments brought my grade down. Not the best class, not the worst.
This guy is awesome. Genuinely cares about his students. Funny. And explains the material very well.
Hauptovogel is an outstanding lecturer. There will be two weekly assignments and recommended due dates so that you can pace yourself for the semester. The powerpoints he provides are long and detailed, and there will be optional field trips to boost your final grade. The tests are open note and he drops the lowest exam grade.
If you need a NSM natural science credit, this is your guy. Online tests and quizzes. Gives good opportunity for extra credit with field trips dropping lowest exam of 4. The assignments that require you to go to the GLC can be tricky so come to them prepared but overall easy A of a class with himothy himself Dr. H.
All work is due by end of semester, but it's better if you get it done by Hauptvogel's suggested due date. Helps you worry less about all the work when you decide to do all of it last minute. Professor is very cool and going to his lectures helps you boost your grade since everything he explains helps you understand better. 10/10 professor to take!
Dr. H was a great professor. I took Natural Disasters and Physical Geology with him. & although Natural Disasters was a little bit more challenging, he is overall an easygoing Professor. This is definitely an easy class to pass and there are plenty of extra credits to go around! The field trip for extra credit was also really fun.
Honest review. It's an average class. I don't like when he does not help you with the assignments or give you any real hints nor does he give the TA. It's not that deep. They are not easy. Half of the exams were mostly pictures and random land features which was unfair. GLC Labs had too many unknowable TAs and weren't given an answer key.
The class is easy. His exams and quizzes are online and open notes. There is a time limit on them but it isn't anything too bad. The field trips are really fun as well. I recommend taking him!
i absolutely loved this class and this professor. he was really passionate about the material and you could tell that he loved what he was doing. attendance wasn't mandatory and tests were online (open note and open book). there were quite a few assignments and quizzes but they had no official due dates. take dr. h! you will not regret it
Dr. H is a chill professor and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Make sure to keep up with the assignments bc all assignments, except exams, have one deadline. Assignments are not hard, but not easy either, u just gotta read the lecture PowerPoints :) Overall, goated professor!
Loved this class! Didn't always attend the lectures, but still made good grades on the tests due to his slideshows. Tests are open note and not on lock down. Plus there are field trips you can go on for extra credit!
Hauptvogel is an extraordinary professor; his lectures were very engaging and explained the topics well. The homework assignments were rather annoying, especially the GLC assignments, but he does offer a decent amount of extra credit. All four exams are open-note, and the worst exam grade is dropped. A great and straightforward class overall.
The professor is ok but geology is not for me
This has been my fav professor so far! His lectures are very coherent and visual plus he makes them interesting. Overall, the class is easy if you take notes and do the work. It consists of 4 exams, he drops the lowest one, quizzes, and assignments. He also offers up to 5 points on your FINAL COURSE GRADE by going on field trips.
He post the lectures on canvas, 10 assignments that some are required to go to the GLC, 6 quizzes, and 4 exams. Drops your lowest exam grade and has extra credit field trips or online extra credit assignments. We did have a textbook but never used it, everything is due at end of the semester. Everything is open notes and replies to emails.
Do it.
Fantastic professor. Lectures are engaging and there's almost no concept of late work in the class. The only hard deadline for the class was near the end of the semester, everything could be turned in at the student's convenience. The only time he missed class was to go to a Dance Gavin Dance concert and honestly yeah I'd skip too for that.
It's not an easy A. But a doable class. I'd personally take this at a community college if you aren't going to be a geology major. TAs are horrible graders most likely because he is making them grade hard. Knit picking everything even if the answer is right. Exam questions weren't very direct. The pictures were random.
Listen, I love this professor. I took Geology, and it was great. HOWEVER... BEWARE of Natural Disasters. The TAs are very tough graders on the assignments (big part of grade). It's impossible (particularly for a non-science major) to get over a C+ on these assignments. I've spent hours on these assignments, and I've gotten less than 60% on each...
He grades the assignments too hard.
I took this class as a core class. He is an amazing teacher, I love how he organizes the lectures and that the lectures are actually about the test, quizzes. I think what really pushed me back from his class was his Word Doc Assignments. The questions were very vague and a lot of "figure it out yourself" problems.
Hauptvogel is an outstanding lecturer. His class is very organized and there are no hard due dates. The only hard due dates are the assignments dealing with Google Earth, Microsoft Word, and Excel. However, the assignments dealing with Microsoft word are harshly graded by TAs. Exams are open-note. If you need a science credit, take this course!
TA"s are absolutely horrid, they will grade you like a thesis audience. Other than that, it's good.
Dr. H is a great professor. If you attend the lectures, which are pretty interesting, you will do great. There is a textbook for this course, but it is more supplemental.
Never showed up besides on the first day. He offers a good amount of extra credit on final grade. Open-note online quizzes/exams so you know the drill - quizlet. 5 big assignments with word, excel, google earth. Work on them a few days before and you chillin'. Ask for help from the 15 TA's if needed. Have A- rn but extra credit may come in clutch.
This class consists of GLC, Assignments, Quizzes, and exams. All of these are easy but beware of the assignments as they take many hours. The assignments are the worst part of this class and are worth 35% of your grade may not seem much but it helped in taking my grade. Good TA = easy class, Bad TA = hard class. But TA's are given by chance.
Dr. H is the best science prof I have ever had the pleasure of taking. Despite what everyone says the assignment were actually easy, if you have a problem first search it up then ask him. He is also replies to emails very quickly. Furthermore, he gave out a chance to receive up to 5 points of EC on your final grade. TAKE HIM, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!
Hauptvogel is fantastic. His lectures are very engaging and everything is online but I recommend showing up to class just because he is so engaging. For his low level classes he understands that most are there for a GEO credit and doesn't place a lot of pressure on you. All exams were open note and online.
This professor wanted us to buy his book for the class not sure why.
Dr. H's class can be a mixed bag - the lectures are solid, but the assignments are tough. Use unstuck ai alongside the textbook to stay on top of things. With some effort, you can do well and get that science credit.
I took Dr. Hauptvogel my first semester, he was my favorite from all of my courses. He's clear in his expectations and has easy tests, they're open EVERYTHING. He is silly and will answer any questions you have in class, tries to be interactive with us.
Great professor! Easy exams if you pay attention during lecture or even if you just look at his lecture slides! Super easy grader too!
"Figure questions" are probably the hardest part of the entire course but even those are pretty easy. They are graded by TA's and sometimes they could be tough graders but for the most part very easy. Tests are 50 minutes 50 questions. Open book and no lockdown browser. Lowest test grade is dropped.
Took him for natural disasters and physical geology, best prof!! You want an EZ class thats fun and interesting, then take him. He does do tophat for attendance and "poppers" but thats EZ. Open book tests and the assignments take like 10-15 min MAX.
Homework every week consists of a smartbook assignment which you can take up to 2 times( the first time shows what you got wrong and correct answers so you can get 100)and an explanation portion. The hardest part is the 6 geology labs, as long as you use his slides and Google, these are ok. Tests are all open book, Easy A.
He was honestly one of my favorite professors in college, I don't care about geology but his positive humor and attitude while teaching kept me entertainted. Go to class for extra credit, there is alot of small hw like pearson and chapter reading and visiting a center but all easy! Tests are no webcam no lockdown at home.
Great professor easy class!! Open notes exams, but beware that it's 50 questions in under 50 minutes. Figure questions (easy), Pearson assignments (easy), attendance and participation easy 100 if you show up. Do the work and you will be fine, there is no reason why you should fail this class. Glc assignments as well, only 6 nothing to complex!!!!!!
Good teacher and gives lots of extra credit I recommend the field trip and easy class
Chill class this is my second time taking him just do your work and you will pass
Easy professor just very disingenuous. Told me that attendance wasn't mandatory when I asked him. Later he added the "participation" grade a few hours after the withdrawal date closed. Separate "attendance" and "participation" grades which was hidden in the syllabus and very unclear. One for credit and the other for EC. I wish he did not lie to me.
All you have to do is do your work before the due date and you will 100% pass. Very easy to get an A, and he's overall a nice chill dude.
Only bad thing is he gives you 50 question exams with 50 minutes. Too little time to chat got or see notes. Notebookllm ifykyk
You should ABSOLUTELY take this class for your natural sciences credits. Attendance is mandatory. Four exams, no lockdown and no cameras. Twelve assignments and GLE (they're super easy). The only complaint I have is that the TA's grades the assignments wayyy too harshly, the average for half of the assignments were mid 70s. Overall: great class
I would highly suggest taking class with Professor H. The lecture is interesting and he's funny. TA's grade the work and have help sessions. If you pay attention to the instructions on the work and prep for tests early, you'll pass. Attendance isn't mandatory but you get 5 absences before you're uneligible for EC. I'm taking GEOL1303 in the fall.
I loved this guy! My only negative comment is that attendance is graded and if you have a high enough attendance grade you are eligible for extra credit. He offers tons of extra credit which is so nice! His lectures are very informative, but they are not boring. The tests are online and not proctored. One assignment due every week that are easy.
Professor H is awesome! Lectures are interesting and he's a chill guy. Class consists of 4 exams (no lockdown or camera), roughly 12 assignments graded by TA's, and participation assignments that are due at the end of the semester. Attendance is mandatory for extra credit and lectures have TopHat questions. Overall great class!
Professor H. is very passionate about what he teaches and the lectures are very interesting. He cares about his students a lot as he was willing to drop some grades and give extra credit assignments. No class on test days. You HAVE to show up to class to get EC. Overall great professor. Only con is that the assignments can be a little confusing.
The HWs and tests were weirdly difficult & confusing (I think the TAs were strict), but the class itself was fine. Attendance is mandatory, extra credit available if you have enough attendance. 4 open note tests and HW that doesn't take super long to do. If you stay caught up the class is simple enough to do well in
His assignments are a little difficult, I recommend making a friend or taking this course with smb, you have three exams + one extra one if you want the extra credit and they are all online, and open-book. He uses TopHat as well, which is for a participation grade during class. Attending and participating in class everyday will help your grade.
He is a really great professor, but the TA's are very harsh graders, and they all grade different. I recommend taking this course with a friend because the assignments are also time consuming and difficult (because he words them weird), three exams + one cumulative, all online and open-book. Attending/participating in class everyday will help grade
He is a great professor, there are 4 exams (lowest grade is dropped), 12 assignments graded by his TA's (beware they grade harsh), attendence matters and impacts your grade, go to class and do all assignments and exams and you will pass
You can only miss a certain amount of days in order to qualify for extra credit. He deeply encourages to work with other classmates, TAs are very accessible as well, and there is tutoring provided as well. Imo, exams seemed to cover things that we didn't really go over in the lecture, or were posted on the slides. 4 exams, and final is optional.
He's very kind, very understanding and you can tell he loves his job. My problem is not with him but with the TAs grading assignments. If you don't know how to use excel, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Many assignments use excel and are set up to where if you get 1 wrong then all the onces after will be wrong. Attendance mandatory for grade and extra cred
good professor
great at lectures, assignments are easy to complete and tests are easy to pass. attendance isn't mandatory however, it is pretty hard to understand the material if you don't attend the lecture
