He is a great professor, very caring and understanding and helpful.

One of the best Professors I have ever had. I took him for Math 122 and than again for Math 247. He is very knowledgeable and above that highly helpful. His exams are tough, but that does not count because he explains the stuff very Well.
Dude, this guy is tight, he's way cake on homework, but his tests are challenging enough...not too bad tho, but just right. Overall, he's pretty cool.
He's great if you're talking a math class that you need to understand and not just get through. He is great at explaining things and will explain until you understand. Also, he's flexible with stuff...understands math isn't your only class.
Great teacher. Great guy. Very nice and very helpful. He should be your first choice when choosing a math professor.
Hs is not helpful at all. I did not like his class.
Very good at explaining the material and making everything clear. Very easy on homework and the tests aren't too challenging. He dropped the lowest exam score for my class. Definitely reccomended.
BEST MATH 247 TEACHER AT THIS SCHOOL!!! I've taken 3 others and he's the only one I actually understand. Doesn't give excessive homework, and has extra credit on some exams. He explains everything very clearly, even the more difficult theoretical concepts
You must takt his class
He gives pop quizzes from time to time. If you do the HW, then you'll do fine in his class. Lets you makeup the first test if you do poorly.
He teaches real good. You must take Calc in his class. He lets you do make up test.
This was my easiest class this semester.
he's nicest teacher ever and he really wants to help his students. His notes are thorough and fairly easy to understand if you pay attention. doing the homework really helps and if you actually study before the test you'll do well. The only people who did bad where those who slacked off bc it seemed easy. IT IS an easy grade if you do the work.
Good teacher. Patient and good at explaining things. Was a pretty easy class from my point of view. Go to class do the homework and you'll do well on tests.
He is nice and easy. He'll let you do make up quizz depend on how the class does it. Very patient. He will make sure that you understand the concepts before move on to the next ones.
Took this class for summer school...very good professor. He makes sure everyone understands the material. Tests are easy as long as you do the homework. Good prep for calculus.
He's very nice and funny. he will answer all questions without making you feel bad. his homework is right out the book and he teaches right out the book also. if you want to learn and also get a good grade them go for him.
His tests are directly from the homework, quizes and lectures. The good thing is he seems to pick the "easier" problems from the homework/quizes to put on the test. He does give quizes, without giving the class notice, during the activity session though, so you have to show up. If he taught MATH 222, I'd take him again next semester.
lectures can be boring. the homework he assigns is not heavy, considering it's a calculus class. he gives 'pop' quizs, but allows groups and open-notes; the quizs are very helpful for test prep. he is so chill w/ collecting homework. he gets a lil lazy though - took a month to get exam 2 back. final is cumulative. he makes it possible to pass. good
Ok, he's a great guy and all, but he frustrates the hell out of me. It takes him years to return your tests, and he grades really really hard on them. He's really picky and doesn't give partial credit. He does teach you until you understand it, but for some reason it's really hard to prove to him that you know it on a test. Homework is easy though.
Nice guy, but he was lazy and unprepared. Don't take him unless you already understand the material.
Very good professor. Students were allowed to ask as many questions as they wanted. Really helped students to understand the material.

his tests are hard... he doesn't give partial credits so becareful... otherwise he's a nice dude..
His tests are easy. =) It's just that you have to study hard. Go to class everyday including on the activity day. It helps u alot because he covers new materials on activity day too. Overall, I love the class. I've learned a lot. Oh yeah..I got A too.. =)
Nice guy, and very helpful. I'm not very good at math, but the way he explained his assignments made it a lot easier. He really tries to help you understand what he's trying to convey. This is the instructor to take if you're not good at math.
Very good teacher but the only thing is that you must do the work the way he tells you to do it or he will mark it wrong. But he teaches the subject very well and is very willing to help you out. He stayed in his office for hours before finals week to help us review.
Not a good teacher... I dunno how anyone would say he teaches well. He doesn't speak while he's teaching, just writes everything on the board, including sentences! Definetly wouldn't recommend.
overall, he's a nice guy. at first i was frustrated because he is not organized, came late, and teaches straight from the book. by the end of the semester, i got used to it and grew fond of his laid back style. Other prof.'s gave loads of work & quizzes. he only gave 4 quizzes and 4 tests(1 retake). I am really glad i took him.
I would not recommend this professor. He comes to class everyday and just starts writing on the board without telling you what chapter or section he's on. And he's a hard grader!!! If you mess up on one simple thing, he takes off more than half of the points the problem is worth. And with only 6-9 problems on the exam, there isn't much room for error
he is not helpful at all.if you mess up on even one exam, you're pretty much screwed and have to play catch up.
the worst teacher ever. he puts you down if you make a simple error. it's hard to understand him and doesn't offer help.
took this guy for math 122, 123, 224, and 233 all A's. has a makeup test after every test. very little homework. lecture is very clear. partial credit on tests and quizs. attendance isn't mandatory. overall class is easy and he is very helpfull and a great professor. all the other students who says he was hard or that is a bad professor are morons.
this class was so hard. i asked for help, but he was useless and didn't even help me solve the problem. i would not recommend this class even if you are a math major!
Great down to earth instructor. Made each lecture very easy to understand. Very patient with students. Take this guy for math...you won't regret it. Thanks Dan.
I wouldn't recommend this guy. He grades very hard, he'll take off so many points for the smallest mistake which is so ridiculous.During lectures, he just copies the example from the book without even coming up with some of his own.And he doesn't even explain the material very well.
Oh what?!?! People, Hernandez is the bomb! His teaching skills are actually good. He tries to make Calculus the easiest possible. He goes at a slow pace and makes sure everyone understands the material, except for the people that dont wanna learn. Oh, he doesnt like to give A's; I almost got one but didnt give it to me =(
i love prof hernandez! he is the greatest calc teacher ever! hes so nice and grades very leniently! you should take him for sure
He is one of the best math professors that I have had.
To start , I am not a math genius, so I ask a lot of questions in class. Unfortunately, I found that Mr. H was unwilling to answer questions. If your an independent studier, and don't rely on a teacher's help, you'll do fine in this class. If you actually expect the teacher to assist you when your having a hard time. Pick another class.
AWESOME MAN...HE REALLY KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING...REALLY CARES ABOUT THE STUDENT'S AND WANT'S THEM TO DO WELL...DO YOUR HOMEWORK, AND ASSIGNMENTS AND YOU WILL BE JUST FINE...GREAT MATH INSTRUCTOR...
Calc 2 is a tough class, but if u can get Hernandez, he is a good teacher. Very informative in his lectures, gives u plenty of easy quizzes to keep you on track and he's always around for office hours and stuff. Nice dude, lineant grader win, win
A little on the boring side, but taught very complete lessons and explained thoroughly and offered extra help.
This teacher is very clear and thorough about the material. he explains it and breaks it down so clearly its like he's teaching elementary but in a good way. he isnt hard at all. if you do the homework and practice the material its a easy 'A'. he's kinda boring but a great teacher
At first I was afraid to take this class because I hate math. Prof. Hernandez was one of the best math teachers I have ever taken. He teaches the subject well and if you ever need help, he is willing to explain it you until you understand it. His tests are not hard since he is pretty straight-forward of what is to be expected on the exam.
i knew that calc would be hard but he always tried to be helpful and was very nice to all students. hw counts for very little but do it! very vital for surviving the class. its in your best interest to never miss class or you'll fall behind :( try to always be in class. and study!
great professor, very helpful with homework, he grades the tests very easy, you sure can take him for as a calculus teacher.
worst teacher for this specific math! he is great for higher level but you will die if you take his calc 2 class. DONT take if you want a good grade now, take him later.
Hes a good teacher! Very helpful if you go to his office hours! The test are problems from the homework. Expect plenty of word problems. Easy overall though!
He's a great professor, his lectures are very clear, he's always very helpful, he's super nice. Unfortunately I didn't do the hw every night & thats what killed me. I ended up getting a C & failing almost every test lol but I did all my hw...good teacher but you have to do hw to survive the class.
Easy to understand. Very helpful, takes time to answer all questions. Make sure you do the homework, because he assigns it every class and collects it every test. This class is a breeze so long as you show up and listen.
Prof. Hernandez is very good with helping explain all parts of Math 119A, but the one downside is his voice is very monotone. However, he's always willing to help everyone with the homework prbolems (do your homework, he collects it at every exam) and as long as you show up and take good notes, you will do fine on the exams.
Awesome professor. Very helpful, slow paced and you leave knowing more. Will be taking him for Math 123. Watch out, his third test is hard, but the others were easy as long as you pay attention.
He teaches very clearly and slow-paced, makes it easy to understand the math. His quizzes are mostly openbook, open notes, and you can work with buddies. Only one quiz was a quiet one. Collects hw on exam days. Do them!!! It helps a lot. He will go over homework problems and help you out. Pretty lenient on due dates.
Mr. Hernandez is a great math teacher he teaches really well but there are other math teacher that are better and that actually believe in his students. his exams are pretty difficult even if you do well there a big chance he'll fail you. His exams are 5-8 questions and that's if you do a problem wrong then you pretty much fail he doesn't give any partial credit either.
I'm horrible at math but managed to get a B with this guy. He's extremely helpful if you visit him during office hours. Good instructor overall.
Really good teacher! He goes over all the material very well. It is really important you go to all the classes because he goes over material everyday and if you miss a class you will fall behind. His tests are not too bad as long as you study and go over your notes. He is super understanding and helpful!!!
So I read the reviews for his Calc II class and I expected to do well if I worked hard but the reality of the class is that you will work really hard to barely pass. You have to be someone who loves math to get an A in this class.
He explains very well what he teaches. His tests are hard but nothing you can not handle after he taught you. Take him!
I recommend Dr. Hernandez for this class. He was clear on his lectures and his tests were fair. The homework due dates were extremely flexible which took off a lot of pressure. He answered any question at any time. The activity session was the time the quizzes were given and they were no problem.
Great teacher! Explains with a passion. He definitely cares and knows what hes talking about. He usually takes one or two similar problems out of his lecture notes and puts it on his test. Overall Calculus is a hard subject what got me through this class was having an understanding for the material and practicing problems OVER AND Over again!
Professor Hernandez is a great teacher for this subject. Without a doubt, one of the best on campus. His classes always fill up super early though, especially for Calc II, so good luck trying to get him, especially if you are a freshman. But if you do, its a pretty easy math class.
Calculus is NOT easy, but Prof. Hernandez is really helpful in office hours. If you ask for the help you'll get it. He's very soft spoken and monotone but he's very nice and intelligent. 1st and 2nd exam are super easy, GET AN A ON THESE! The 3rd and 4th get very difficult. He's generally clear but moves very slowly. Great professor!
Professor Hernandez was great at teaching the material. Calc is hard enough but he did make it pretty easy to understand and he answers questions. During activities he gives worksheets to work on that help understand the material even more.
Very good professor. Soft-spoken, but he knows what he's talking about and explains very well if you're stuck or confused. He's smart-alecky at times but it's tolerable. The tests are pretty straightforward; you will do well if you do the homework and the activities. Doesn't take attendance but calculus is hard so might as well go to class.
Professor Hernandez is a really great teacher. He explains everything slowly so that you're able to understand the material. His exams are fairly easy! :)
Dan knows how to teach, calc 2 is a hard subject and he does his best. A lot of text book homework, but you need to do it in order to understand it. 3 midterms, all relatively straightforward, with no surprises. He gave our class a make up exam to drop our lowest one too. If you ask for help, he will help
Sorta awkward guy at first, very quiet, but you learn his sense of humor by the end. Calculus is tough but he tries to make it easy, just show up to class. Every. Day. I would also buy the solutions manual, I wouldn't survive without it.
Took this dude for all 3 Calculus classes. Definitely was a blessing. He knows his subject and very passionate about math. Cool guy, he's always willing to help you, even when you bug him outside his office hours. I never took Calculus in high school but his in depth explanation got Calc planted in my brain now. You won't regret taking him!
taking it from Dan, it was actually a fun class. I felt really prepared for Calc 3. The way he teaches sequences and series is pretty good, he makes the exam according to the pace of the class . Go to the activity for the problem set and keep those to study for the exam, homework is handwritten (better than webASSign) due at exam days
Professor Hernandez knows how to teach all material ranging from integration techniques/applications to series at a crystal cut level. Although calc 2 is considered a difficult class, he makes it look simple with this informative and helpful lectures. Exams are relatively straightforward as they are based on homework and in class activity quizzes.
Very good teacher and goes through each chapter throughly. He makes those dad jokes and tries to say things as if he were in college. He's a good person and gives lectures diligently.
Professor Hernandez is a great professor. He lectures every meeting and gives practice problems during the activity session. There is homework every week but he's lenient with due dates. Bulk of the grade comes from exams which are tricky but very doable. You have to really learn the concepts to get an A, and he presents them in an accessible way
Very good at explaining concepts. Show up, do your homework, study and you will do well. Test are easier than webassign. Very lenient with collecting homework and grading.
So far so good. Really nice professor. He seems to really care about his students. If you do the homework, you will for sure at least pass his exams. He makes the exams based on the most basic of questions so he's not trying to trick or anything. Just straightforward testing of knowledge. Lots of work, but very good teaching. Slow but effective
If you're going to take Calc II I would recommend Dan. His tests are not that easy but do the homework, webassign, and study for the tests. Not the most exciting professor either so keep that in mind if you want to really enjoy the class.
He's a pretty nice guy. Definitely will go at the pace necessary for his students and geniunely cares about your well being. I didn't feel like the work was too overwhelming, but the webassign does take time. If you are able to do the assignments and the worksheets in Lab, you should be able to pass the class. Highly recommend Dan!
While there's a lot of great things to say about Dan and not enough room to do so, let me just say he's probably one of the best if not THE best Math Profs. at CSULB! Lectures/activities are really fun & enjoyable, and hard concepts are made easy. Down to earth guy, great sense of humor, and very approachable. Show effort and it'll go a long way!
My favorite Professor ever! Lectures were super helpful, always willing to answer questions, and had a good sense of humor. Tests weren't bad but he always gives 1-2 questions to distinguish the "A" & "B" students. Go to all the classes, participate, visit him in office hours, and he'll value it when putting in grades at the end of the semester.
Prof. Hernandez is the best math teacher ever! Very patient and kind toward students. His lecture is very organized and goes through the pace. even though summer course required a fast pace lecture, he manages to pull everything through and make everyone comfortable and confident for the test. Definitely take him again in cal 3.
Dr. Hernandez is a great professor to have! Goes by lecture slowly so the class can easily follow along and his exams are easy as long as you practice the ICAs, Supplementary Problems, and WebAssign HW. He is also there to help you out whenever you are stuck at a problem. Even though Calc 3 is a hard class, you won't regret taking him!
This is the second semester I have taken Hernandez (I took him for Calc 2 & 3) and he is great! I highly recommend him, since he is helpful during class and during his office hours, and taught me how to succeed in Calculus. He cracks jokes throughout class, but makes sure everyone is learning. His tests are difficult, so study notes and his ICAs!
Dan is the definition of a good teacher. This is the second semester I've had with him, and it's been a privilege. He actually has activities with worksheets (which tests are based off of), and answers questions with clarity. He genuinely cares about students, and his office hours were great. Take him!! He'll make Calculus a fun subject!
He's the most patient professor I have ever seen. He takes time to explain concepts and make sure that you understand them. He's a bit soft-spoken but very caring.
Best math professor I've ever had. Midterms are not surprise questions and do become harder. Lecture and activity are straightforward. Calc 2 is not a hard subject if you get this professor. A LOT OF WEBASSIGN. ICA every activity. Gives points during exams.
Dan is super clear in terms of what he expects you to know, and if you're confused, he will work with you until you get it. Lectures are IMPORTANT. Sometimes throws in semi-unrelated/overly difficult problems on ICAs, but exams are always fairly reflective of what you do in class. Practice the ICA and Exam Review problems, and you will be fine.
They say Calc 2 is one of the toughest classes, not with this guy! Professor Dan is probably the best professor in the math department, he is very caring and assigns a lot of homework but he makes sure that it is doable and easy to get done. Would definitely take him if I was you. Remember that you still have to study but you will pass with him!
Picky grader at times, but hands down the best professor Ive had at this university. He is extremely helpful and caring.
Professor Hernandez is the best MATH 224 professor at LB. He gives in-depth, informative lectures. Tests are pretty straightforward, but you have to show your work well, or else risk losing points. The only issue is pacing, which should be guided by the department. Too much time was spent on Chapter 10, and little time on Chapters 12/13.
Great professor to have for Calc 3. Professor does a great job teaching and the course itself is well-organized. Homework is on the lighter side for a math course and the tests are fair. If you can do the homework, tests should be no problem. Only criticism is that the pace of the class is a bit slow at the beginning and way fast at the end.
Professor Hernandez is a great teacher! I had difficulty learning Calc 1 and at the beginning of the semester he takes the time to go back and enforce a strong background. He is kind of a slow lecturer but was easy to follow. Tests were in person and usually 8 questions and he would try to give as much points a he can. Great guy, take him!
Relaxed teacher with slow and relaxed lectures. Makes sure the students understands the topics before continuing. Decent amount of homework but it always relates back to lecture. Willing to work with students about deadlines and extensions. Makes sure you have the necessary resources to perform well in his class. Greatly Recommend.
Dan is a caring professor. He is very considerate of his students. Not too much homework and he will give extensions out whenever needed. He goes over the material really well and goes over a lot of problems to make sure you get it. 3 exams and 1 Final. No quizzes. He is very light on grading and will give you credit for every step even when wrong.
Very patient teacher. He's on the old side, but knows how to explain things really well and will slow things down if you ask him to. Also gives out extensions on homework if you just ask. Tests are often based on the icas done in activity. As long as you pay attention in lecture it'll be an easy A
Calc 2 is hard, but this professor made it seem like a cakewalk. His lectures are insanely slow (I fell asleep a few times), but he posted all lecture notes online so you can easily review them. His test was never insanely hard, but very fair. Overall a great professor who wants his students to pass and gives them many opportunities to do so.
