Overall he is a nice guy and is very enthusiastic about his teaching but is often confusing. He uses graphs to explain problems when you cannot use a calculator to graph anything on tests or homework. He does not always explain the process behind his work but instead just gives many examples to teach the information. It is hard to follow his work.
He is a great guy but the way he has the class set up doesn't allow for any errors. one bad grade and you will drop to a B.
He is a very nice guy and very willing to answer any questions (during lecture and office hours). He really does try to teach the material well, but uses examples that often end up making the concept more confusing. Weekly online homework. Grades tests very easy, I got 1 full problem correct out of 10 and got an 84. One extra credit opportunity
This class is fairly easy to those math majors. He is a really great guy. Office hours are really helpful. A few concepts aren't explained clear but overall is clear. Do the homework, and do the practice problems if you have time. He made this class easier than it should be, so be prepared for the final, which is much harder than his exams.
Dr. Hockensmith was very enthusiastic about Calc 3 and gave lectures that showed how to do a problem, but also why that was. Examples in class and in recitation were much harder than the tests, so the tests were not that bad. If you show up to class and do the practice exams you should be fine.
Hockensmith is the best professor you could have for Calc 1. I looked forward to going to his lectures, some of the concepts I thought were a little confusing at first, but he is extremely helpful and there to answer questions. His office hours will save your life. He really cares about his students. Recommend any day!!!!
Made hard concepts appear clear; very good at explaining concepts and showing examples for new lessons; easy to contact and willing to aid with questions
Calc 3 has pretty hard concepts but he seems to be able to break them down in a way that is easy to understand. Always happy to help students that reach out with problems. Definitely would recommend him if you have to take calc 3. If you don't have to take calc 3, the 40% fail rate should be discouraging enough.
This class is wicked hard. However, if you are forced to take this or any other Calc at Pitt, Hockensmith makes it as painless as possible. He is always in a good mood and super helpful. He is very refreshing for a mathematics professor. Definitely would take again!
Dr. Hockensmith is very willing to help. His worksheets are helpful and not graded. You just go to the recitation, do the worksheets and ask some questions. The quizzes are not that difficult. Although the exam is somehow hard, he gives very generous extra credits. All in all, I really like him and want to take his class again.
Great professor. Highly recommend. Makes dorky math jokes & truly loves math and teaching. Easy to understand. Class problems are much easier than exam and final problems. Gives additional HW to lon capa. Extra credit opportunities are rare but necessary. Go to review sessions. Cares about students a lot. Very accessible. 10/10 one of my favorites
Super enthusiastic nice guy. You can tell he's really in love with the subject and cares about the students. No idea how someone can be that energetic teaching early morning calculus. The classes he teaches aren't easy though so long as you put in some effort you can do fine.
LOVE. THIS. GUY. Hockensmith is the man. Seriously, go to his office hours, otherwise you're missing out!! Plus he's super nice and all of his quizzes so far have been take home. Would highly recommend to anyone!
take him for calc 1!! He offers extra credit with every midterm and all quizzes have been take home. Review sessions for tests are very specific and help a lot with the tests. Definitely go to his office hours if you need help
Dr. H is always available for office hours and is only an email away. His exams are hard but they prepare you for the final. He gives extra credit for his two exams and take home quizzes. He explains each topic like you've never seen it before even if its a recap. I would definitely take him if you need to take calc 2 (or any calc for that matter)
Hockensmith is awesome. Whenever I had troubles, I never hesitated to email him and he would always respond promptly, even on weekends. His tests are reasonable, and they prepare you for the final. I only wished he did more examples in class and gave us specifics about the final exam curve ahead of time (curved differently than in his class)
You don't need to go to class to pass but he goes over example problems that will be on the exam. He really cares about his students and offered extra credit after the two exams. The homework is online and super easy and the quizzes are take home and are also easy. Definitely take him for Calc 1 if you have the option to
I honestly don't know if I would have passed with another professor. Calc 2 is hard! Hockensmith will help you get through it though. Do all your homework and extra credit it will help your grade. Go to Office hours he is more than willing to help and will schedule separate appointments if you ever want to go over tests. Definitely recommend
Hockensmith was definitely one of the better Professors I've had here at Pitt. He knew the material really well and made sure to take the time to go over topics so that they were easy to understand. When the final came my friends in other classes were worried while I felt prepared. The dude is really caring and is always available.
He is a great professor. I am going to for Calc 2. Go to Review sessions that he holds, before exams. He is always available outside class room, in the MAC, as his office is there. Really caring prof. At Pitt. Highly recommend, and wont disappoint.
Dr. Hockensmith is the best professor I've had at Pitt so far. He is always so prepared for lecture, and you really need to come to every lecture because he uses every second of that 50 minutes. All of the worksheets and quizzes that he made were very helpful and the tests were doable as long as you study your amazing lecture notes and do all HW
Probably my favorite professor at Pitt. He really wants to help you understand the content. His lectures were amazing and he explained the material really well. He provides worksheets and quizzes that were also really helpful. The exams are straightforward as long as you study and he does provide extra credit opportunities to help boost your grade
I love doc hock, he gave so many opportunities to improve your grade. That being said I'm a little disappointed that I ended up with a B, he is a brilliant guy but I cannot say his tests were not pretty challenging to me
Hockensmith is hands down one of my favorite professors at Pitt. I came into Calc 2 prepared for the worse and expecting my gpa to get wrecked, but Hockensmith proved me wrong. He genuinely cares about his students and made even difficult concepts easy to understand. If you prepare yourself for his exams and actually show up, you will do well.
Dr. Hockensmith is the best professor I've had so far. He really cares and puts time outside of class to do exam review sessions and help you. If you can take Hockensmith, take him.
Dr. Hockensmith is one of the best professors I've had at Pitt. He really cares about his students and puts a lot of effort into the course. Obviously the course is hard because he has to prepare you for the departmental final but you actually learn the content because he is a great teacher. Definitely take Calc 2 with him.
Two midterm exams, one final. Don't skip class you will regret it so much. He's a great teacher with open office hours. The exams and finals are very challenging and studying in advance is a must. There is extra credit from time to time, take advantage. Around 8-10 homework total. Grading: 2x20%midterms, 20% hw, 40% final. Doesnt take attendence.
He is very organized and thorough and funny. Posts notes from class often if you miss one. Explains every method you'll need for exams (and the final) in detail. Such a cute and happy nerd. Our class averaged a letter grade higher than every other class on the final. Calc 2 isn't easy but he'll help you succeed and not feel overwhelmed or hopeless.
Dr. Hockensmith wants his students to succeed. He is a great calculus professor. I can't say that the class was easy, because calc 2 isn't easy. But, he will help ease the pain. He provides many resources and really explains every topic in detail.
Hockensmith is one of the best professors I have had at Pitt so far and I would definitely recommend taking one of his courses if you have the option. He really cares that all of his students understand the material and are able to do well on the exam. He also offered a few chances to earn extra credit. The homework was online on Lon Capa.
best prof. at pitt ever!! take class with him!!
Dr. H is the most kind and caring professor I have ever met. He truly wants his students to learn math, so he teaches extremely clearly. He is always available to help, via email (even on weekends!). If you can take him, DO IT!
Great professor! Lectures were clear; he was able to make even the most difficult concepts rather simple. Exams were fair, along with his grading style. Quizzes were take-home, which helped to take the stress out of recitation. Would definitely take him again if I have the chance!
Was a great professor! He explained all the concepts very clearly, and would always go back if someone was confused on how he got a number. Also always available to help outside of class - you can either meet him in his office or email him (and he responds quickly)!
Dr. H was super nice and good at teaching. I hate math sm but I had a co-req and I hadn't taken it in 2 years before I took his class. Thank god he explained everything really well, and he's also just a nice guy and he truly cared to make sure we understood concepts. IF YOURE A PSYCH MAJOR BUT HATE MATH TAKE THIS CLASS.
Dr. Hockensmith is AMAZING. He has a great method of teaching and relates material from the textbook to examples. I struggle with any math, but Dr. H was always available to meet after class for extra help to help you succeed. If you dedicate time to learning the material, STUDY, attend class and pay attention, you will learn the math and do well.
Dr. H is great! I would take him again without a heartbeat. His lectures are clear and straightforward. There is no hard concept in his class. Take-home quizzes. Not many extra credits so you still need to do well on exams. He sends don't-stress-about-grade email right after exam if the exam is too hard, which is really nice. Fair grader
His lectures were a little dry, but calc 3 is a dry topic. He is very helpful during office hours, so if you ever need help go to his office hours. He really cares for his students and their success in his class. Your grade is based on take-home quizzes (that you can get help on), a few exams, and Lon Capa homework.
Dr Hockensmith was able to effectively communicate extremely difficult concepts in a fairly straightforward manner. Great lectures. Very nice professor in and outside the classroom. Works with students on deadlines if they cannot meet one. Available in his office most times of day.
This was the second time that I have had the pleasure of learning from Dr. Hockensmith. He goes above and beyond with review sessions for every exam, and his homework and tests are always fair. He is hands down the best professor at Pitt, and I would take every class with him if I had a chance.
Dr. Hockensmith is by far the best math professor at Pitt, maybe even the best professor at Pitt. He is able to break down the most complex topics into easily understandable lectures. His tests also prepare you well for the departmental final, although the Calc II departmental final is incredibly difficult regardless. Always willing to hep, too.
I took Hockensmith for Calc 1 this semester. His lectures were decent but they are definitely worth going to and he is fantastic at answering questions. He prepared us very well for the notoriously difficult departmental final. I didn't get to know him too well because I was lazy and didn't go to office hours often, but he is very available.
By far the best calc teacher I've ever had. Calc is hard and confusing but he made it very understandable by relating it to real-world examples. Very nice and would stay after class to answer questions; also he always posted the notes online after the lecture. His tests were difficult, but on par with the final - doing the practice exams helps.
Dr H is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He spends a good amount of time explaining why we do things in math and why it works. I had already taken Calculus 1 before, but I actually understood it when Dr H taught me. He gives out take-home quizzes and you don't have to go to lab recitation if you finished your homework already.
He goes through a lot of examples and can explain things different ways if you're confused. He is also flexible with deadlines if you ask.
Doc Hock is great. lectures are super informative and sometimes a little amusing and he's great at explaining difficult topics. Since switching to online its a little more challenging but he does his best to keep us up to date with lots of resources. His tests are hard but fair as long as you understand the lectures and do practice youll be fine
Hockensmith tries his best to make sure students fully understand a concept and would readily provide assistance if needed. Great professor no complaints. You can pretty much do the bare minimum of paying attention to lectures and doing the quizzes and you'll be fine.
Do yourself a favor and take Professor Hockensmith. He is a really nice guy who genuinely wants to see you succeed. Very responsive to emails, always accessible for extra help, gives extensions. Calculus is a hard class no matter who you take it with, but his lectures made hard concepts easy to understand. As expected, tests were hard but fair.
Professor Hockensmith is awesome. I had him for CALC 0220 this past semester after not taking math for almost 3 years. Really good at explaining the concepts and always enthusiastic. He also runs the Math Assistance Center and is almost always there. 100% recommend.
Lectures were kinda boring but he thoroughly goes through concepts and theory. Was very friendly and willing to help. Good choice for anyone who needs to take calc as his exams accurately reflects what was taught in class. Do all recitation problems/homework-- these are similar to what is tested
As a math major and having taken a variety of math professors at Pitt, Dr. Hockensmith is by far the most thorough and accessible math professor I have had. MATH0420 is naturally a difficult course, but Dr. Hockensmith broke it down and made sure to answer questions outside class. Would recommend Dr. Hockensmith to anyone.
Dr. Hockensmith is a very good professor. The notes do get to be excessive but you cannot find better than him! He even offers extra credit sometimes and his exams are pretty similar to the final exam. I recommend him 10/10.
He is so sweet and really cares about the students. He offers many office hours, and is willing to set up a different time thats best for you if you need more help. He is honestly my favorite proff so far. I would definitely take him again.
Dr H is awesome! His lectures are great and he makes him self very available outside of class. If you have the chance to take him, you definitely should!
Dr. H is amazing professor. He is patient, accessible, funny, and has an adorable cat. Even if lectures are not mandatory, I recommend going because he explains concepts so well.
Dr. Hockensmith is an AMAZING professor. He made tons of review videos, which really helped when I was studying for the final. He also gave reasonable deadlines for homework assignments/quizzes. Calc 2 is an extremely difficult class, but he made it really manageable. Please do yourself a favor and take Dr. Hockensmith if you get the chance!!!!!!!!
Professor Hockensmith did an excellent job at adapting this course for online learning. He did a great job explaining the concepts and making sure we were prepared for exams and the final. He was very easy to reach outside of class when I had questions and is very willing to help us understand the material. He was also willing to extend deadlines.
He truly cares about you! He wants you to do well and knows you probably don't want to be taking math, so he tries to make it enjoyable. Always helpful and very clear. Sometimes notes are a bit cluttered, but other than that he is super helpful! Would 100% take him again!
Dr. Hockensmith is a unicorn within the math department and hands down the best professor I've had at Pitt. He's extremely accessible and is very good at explaining concepts. If you're willing to put in the work and ask for help you'll 100% do well in his class.
Dr. Hockensmith is the best professor I have had at Pitt. He truly wants his students to succeed and is extremely helpful. He provides all the resources you need and his lectures are thorough. He answers all questions and the exams are not difficult because he goes over all the material in depth beforehand. Totally recommend taking his class!
Literally the nicest man you will ever meet--he cares about students and really tries to help you learn. The subject can be difficult to understand but he gives so many resources and supplemental help if you need it. He prepared us pretty well for the final exam and is overall one of the best profs ive had
LOVED his class. Not a huge math person anymore, but he taught it very well and was consistently super helpful. Clearly cared about students and was a pretty cool guy. I also felt as if I learned the content well for his class.
Dr. H is probably the best Professor to have when taking Math 240 or 280! He is teaches the material and concepts of the courses extraordinarily well and is extremely accessible outside of class! I had him on the online format for both classes and exams were take home. He really wants all his students to pass! Take him!
Hockensmith is probably my favorite professor that I've taken at Pitt. I have taken him for both Calc 2 and Linear Algebra. He is very on the ball and is very good at explaining concepts in lectures. While this class was online, his tests were take home tests, and it made it very manageable for a class like Calc 2. I would recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Hockensmith truly cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. He's always available in office hours and great at explaining concepts. To add, he gives solid study material (and practice exams) for all mid-terms/finals.
Dr. Hockensmith is the best professor I've had at Pitt. Calc 2 is a notoriously difficult class, but he makes it insanely simple. His lectures are great, and if you need help all you have to do it email him or go to office hours, and you'll be set. He cares deeply about your success, and it shows. If you have the chance to take his class, do it.
Of course, the content of calculus 2 is really difficult, but Hockensmith is such a caring professor. He wants all his students to do well. Definitely go to his office hours and ask for help when you need it, and you'll do fine! He's a great teacher and cares a lot for all his students :)
He's literally amazing at teaching and is also very caring where he goes out of his way to do multiple review sessions for students before every test. He genuinely cares about teaching and is generally enthusiastic doing so, so the lectures engaging.
One of the best professors I've had. Genuinely cares about every student and does the absolute most to be accessible for everyone. He goes above and beyond his amazing lectures by preparing pre-lecture videos, relevant practice exams, and frequent office hours. He makes the material digestible and his enthusiasm for math really shows. Take him.
This is the nicest professor you will ever have. He is super nice and takes off minimal points grading. He comes in on the weekends to give review sessions for exams. I do not know if this will continue but he recorded every lecture for us and gave us take home quizzes. It really helped me to learn calculus in a nurturing environment. Take him!
I paid for and never used the online textbook, homework was online.
Really great professor. Prepared us really well for the midterms and the final, always communicated concepts well. I consistently did the homework and went to review sessions(helpful!!) and had almost no trouble on the exams after studying. really good energy, made us laugh, kept us engaged, was very honest about expectations and difficulty level
Hockensmith is one of the best math professors I've ever had. His lectures are very clear and he has a unique way of explaining concepts and derivations that I found accessible. Lowkey a funny guy, too.
Really gifted professor - very knowledgeable and personable. He allowed for asynchronous during in-person but you have to go to class if you want to do well. He's incredibly caring and dedicated to his students and their success. Best Professor I've had at Pitt and likely that I've ever had. Good luck!
His lectures were very helpful and super easy to follow. Also provided lecture recordings and responded to emails very quickly. Super flexible with homework due dates. Attending lecture and doing the homework will prepare you for the exams.
Dr. Hockensmith will likely be the best professor I'll ever have. I had him for Calc II, and loved him so much I picked him again for Calc III. He is a fantastic lecturer, and is good at slowing the material down to make it easily understandable. He gives take-home quizzes, and will occasionally give take-home exams, which are both open-note.
Dr. Hockensmith is phenomenal at explaining Calc III in a way that is thorough but also understandable. I cannot stress enough how freakishly good he is at using a combination of derivations, visualizations, applications, and practice to cement a firm understanding of the material in your mind. He's readily accessible & has amazing notes. Easy 5/5.
Professor Hockensmith was amazing for calc III. Explained things very well and was always available to help. Quizzes were take home as well as 2 of our exams, and he grades very fairly. Also offers extra credit. I am taking him again for linear algebra because I loved the class so much, I would highly recommend.
His lectures prepared you well for exams.
He is seriously the best. He turns what can be an extremely difficult subject into something that can be easily understood. He uses every ounce of his 50 minute lectures so don't miss them. He's very accessible outside of class and is very kind and caring. He remembered my name in a full class with masks on after I went to office hours like twice.
Daniel Hockensmith is absolutely Goated. By far the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are engaging and doesn't burden you with assignments. His weekly quizzes were take home and Lon Capa was 10% extra credit. Getting an A+ in this class is as easy as keeping up with lectures, understanding concepts and doing homework/practice problems.
Look, Professor Hockensmith is very much for the student. As in, he extends his goodwill beyond what you can expect. I've had late assignments that weren't penalized. I've reached out to him for an extra day on assignment and he gave me two. Keep in mind that it's entirely my fault the assignments were late. Lectures made sense and class is great.
Had a tough sem personally, but Hockensmith (w/o realizing it) made this course so much easier and accessible for me. Online notes (written and typed), recorded lectures, exam prep, hybrid class. I have never had a prof that put so much effort into making sure the students had all the resources they need. He really does want the best for students.
Hockensmith is a really nice and funny professor who truly cares about his students success. I recommend going to office hours and starting the homework's early. He is very fair and sets up students well for the final. Each time I have had him my section scored the highest on the final.
Anybody who shows up to Dr. Hockensmith's great lectures will have no trouble understanding the concepts presented in this class. It's easy to get 100% on the homework, which makes up 20% of your grade. The other 80% is from exams, but the exams are fairly easy as long as you study. I really have nothing bad to say.
This was my second class that I took with Professor Hockensmith, and I cannot recommend him enough. His lectures are very easy to understand, and he makes them interesting and engaging too! He goes out of his way to give his students the best chance of success, and is all around a great person.
Funny guy, goes out of his way to ensure his students succeed. Highly recommend.
He summarizes the information and the relevance of each topic at various points in each unit, rather than just throwing numbers on the board for 50 mins every class. The tests and homeworks are all pretty fair and he clearly cares that everyone actually understands the material.
Very straightforward lectures and exams. Never had to look at the textbook as Professor Hockensmith always published his lecture and summarized notes as exams rolled around. I would recommend going to his office hours if you need help ,as he tries to make sure you understand the information as intuitively as possible. He can also write backwards.
Hockensmith, is a really nice, funny, and great lecturer. He understands the material and conveys it well. He is available outside of class and high recommend going to his office hours for clarification and help with the material.
I'd say he is a good professor, but this course is hard as fuc
this is for MATH0413. his first time teaching it. but he is always down to help you in his office hours. the content is hard and you have to take what he has previously taught to the next subject through the whole class so don't miss out on a concept, go to him for help. he is very nice
Dr. Hockensmith is both a fantastic lecturer and extremely helpful outside of class. Need help on the homework, just shoot him an email and he gets right back to you with detailed explanations. Homework is sent from hell, but it prepares you well for the exams. Easily aced every exam, quiz, and the final paper but struggled to get above a C on hw.
Honestly, I came into Pitt already knowing a good chunk of calc which maybe why this class was a bit easier for me. He's lenient with test and grades and overall a caring professor and so understanding towards us as students. 100/10 would take again I wish he would teach all my future calc classes. LOVE HOCKENSMITH he is such a good teacher.
Hockensmith probably taught the easiest calc 3 class at Pitt. He teaches the stuff really well and it's super easy to succeed in his class. There's a take-home quiz once a week and two exams excluding the final. He'll take class time to help us prepare for these exams. He offers up to 5% extra credit through optional Lon Capa assignments.
Really great professor all around. I found his section of Calc 3 to be pretty easy. Definitely not a blow off, he just has really great lectures. Lon Cappa is for extra credit, weekly quizzes that are take-home, open resource, and work at your own pace. Two midterms and one departmental final. Lecture/recitation attendance are not graded.
Dr. Hockensmith is a great choice for calc 3. He gives amazing lectures and has a way of breaking down difficult topics step by step. The midterms were take home so he could go further in depth in lecture, HW was extra credit. You wont have to worry about grades too much.
Professor Hockensmith was by far the best professor I had this semester. He made his course stress free, and I genuinely learned a lot in his classroom. He also was very kind and accommodating, and always wanted what was best for his students. I would 100000000% recommend you take a course with him if you have the chance to.
Great guy overall. Super nice and respectful, easy to reach outside of class if you need anything, and very understanding. The class can be difficult, but if you reach out to him he is more than happy to help.
Couldn't recommend Hockensmith enough. He is an amazing lecturer who is always open to answering questions and also offers extensions. You can watch lectures either in-person or on zoom. Quizzes are take-home, and there are two midterms before the final and the second one was take-home. Didn't use the textbook once so don't waste your money on it!!
Professor Hockensmith is the best. Had him for Business Calculus, he is not only a good teacher but super nice guy and always able to help outside of the classroom. He is the most understanding professor & always Zooms his lectures, too, which is so nice if you're sick or need to go back and watch something. If you have the opportunity, TAKE HIM!!
Cannot recommend him enough. I genuinely think you would have to make an effort to be able to fail because the breakdown of grading is generous along with the format of most assignments/exams/quizzes. He had extensive office hours and many options for attending class synchronously or getting notes later. He clearly cares that you learn.
Super nice guy, but very dry lectures. I loved math in high school, but didn't enjoy his class. Fair grader and generous with extra credit. Course was heavily geared toward engineers with applications to physics.
Very nice & accomodating professor. Not much homework at all & the second exam was take home. I did tend to fall behind on the material since there was almost no time required outside of class, so I would cram in month's worth of material a few days before the exam. So just try to keep up with the material & you'll be good.
So kind and nice. Give at most five percent extra credits and make the second exam online and open-book. The course is hard but he makes the lectures super organized. Record every lecture and post the recordings on time. Also curve the exam.
Best professor at Pitt for this class. Gives bonus for typing the homework in LaTeX and curves exams generously. Well-spoken and extremely helpful during office hours. Makes getting a decent grade pretty doable.
Dr. Hockensmith is a great professor who definitely cares about what he teaches. He is very helpful and generous, offers a lot of extra credit on homework assignments and sometimes exams. I recommend.
One of the few gems in the math department. Lectures were interesting and clear, exams were very fair with lots of options for extra credit. Did not feel like a W course. Highly recommend to anyone.
My favorite professor yet!! Funny, caring, knowledgeable, patient, everything one could want in a math professor. Made Business Calculus so much less stressful. Cannot recommend enough. 3 exams plus final; very little homework. Last 1/2 months were quiz-heavy but TA (Jordan Bennett) was so nice that I didn't even mind. Would absolutely take again.
By far the best professor in the math department. Dr. Hockensmith explains difficult concepts very clearly so it all makes sense. He also genuinely cares about his students as he is super helpful in office hours and offers plenty of opportunities for bonus points and extra credit. I can't recommend him enough, take him if you can!
413 is a different level of hard, but Hockensmith is by far the best option for this course. He is great at explaining tough concepts, and he is always available to help if you're stuck. He offered SO much extra credit, so getting an A is very doable. Go to office hours if you're stuck on the homework, and he'll work through the problems with you.
Amazing teacher. It makes everything easy to understand and gives extra credit points when needed. I wish I could take him next semester.
Dr. Hockensmith was a fantastic professor. He truly cared about how his students did in his class, and tried to make calculus as interesting as it could be. He was extremely accessible outside of lecture and went out of his way to help students. If struggling, his office hours are a great way to get help, and overall he was just a really nice guy.
Dr. Hockensmith is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Great pacing, great at explaining all concepts, great at making each student feel important. He's an awesome person. If Hockensmith is an option for any course, TAKE HIM.
10/10 Professor!! Take him if you can!!! Lots of extra credit and great communication. Plenty chances to fix your mistakes on exams as well. He really cares for his students and is just and overall great person in general! I learned a lot :)
Professor Hockensmith makes the challenging Calc 3 course manageable. His lectures are well-organized, and he offers generous grading with quizzes, take-home exams, and extra credit. unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the class resources.
Dr. Hockensmith has such a high rating for a reason. His lectures are very easy to follow, and if you ask him, he will post all the notes he writes in class on Canvas. He is very accessible by email, and will give you extensions on homework/quizzes almost all of the time. If you have the chance to take Dr. Hockensmith, do it.
The most helpful professor I have ever had. When I was struggling in his class he set time aside to work with me individually, and he never made me feel stupid when I wasn't understanding things. The class is difficult but its only because calc exams are departmental.
Dr. Hockensmith is a hidden gem of the Pitt math department. He was very easygoing and relaxed but still taught the material well. His tests are graded very fairly and he genuinely cares about if students are doing well on them. It's honestly hard to do badly in this class. If you have the choice of taking Dr. Hockensmith, please do! He is awesome!
He's a good teacher and clearly understands the material. Math 0220 in general is just a difficult class to take at Pitt no matter who you have, but I thought that he was good, except for the fact that he's a little disorganized otherwise he's fine. All of my quizzes were take home which was really nice and he is accessible outside of class.
Prof. Hockensmith was a perfect teacher for me. He gave us examples in class, with pre-made notes. He also had Zooms online for every single class, as well as it being recorded. His tests were not too hard, and made sure everyone had a fair chance of getting an A. I never loved math before Prof. Hockensmith, but he made it feel interesting!
Dr. Hockensmith makes math so easy to understand and care about his work and students. He has a zoom option for all classes and is very lenient with due dates and making up quizes. 3 exams with test corrections for points back, homework with unlimited attempts and quizes roughly every other week which are mostly group quizes.
About the class: I took it fall semester of 2025, weekly homework assignments & quizzes, tests are crucial , lots of EX CR About the professor: Very informative lectures. Thorough explanation of concepts and he cares about your comprehension of material. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Quiz review during class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR ANY MATH CLASS YOU NEED!
Calc/Orgo at pitt are the two hardest subjects youll take as a pre health major. Dr. H tho is nothing short of amazing, was really suprised by the fairness of his exams throughout the sem! he also gives great supplemental material and is so useful in office hours. Calc at pitt is hard so taking it with Dr H will make it all the more bearable!
i want to marry him and i hate math that's how good king hock is
Dr. Hockensmith was a really good professor and I highly recommend him for anyone taking business calculus. I was really nervous about taking Calculus because I am not a math person but Dr. Hockensmith made it easier. He is a very good lecturer and a great person overall. I cannot recommend him enough.
I took Pre-Calc without a calculator, and he truly made me understand the material. He offers quiz retakes and exam corrections to help raise your grade. It's important to attend recitations since every worksheet is graded. Overall, his lectures are clear and easy to follow, and he's always responsive to questions.
