He test are hard. they are completely essay and have almost nothing to do with lecture. this is a class where you must read the book listening only will not do.
As long as you read the books and study for the tests, he is a really awesome professor!
very smart guy. Knows all his stuff from every angle. he's really funny too. he keeps an otherwise boring class entertaining. Tests aren't overly hard but you do need to read the book. overall killer guy, take his class if you need history credit.

Great guy, very helpul and has a great knowledge of the material. Funny and excels at making an otherwise boring subject interesting through comedy.
I love him! I've always hated history, but he made it interesting. He is hilarious! He'll joke about everything but still teach you. I haven't used my book once. You can't miss one class or you'll be lost though.Make sure you get a good atlas!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's fun, energetic with a lively nature. Extremely helpful and gets the class active.
Kickin' teacher. Helpful and all around nice guy. Cares about his students and their opinions and knows very well what he's talkin' about!
Great teacher. He is very entertaining and friendly. Communicates well with students, and knows his stuff. My class is 2 hr. 20 min. long but I still love it. His material is interesting, but his notes are very long. His test are all essay.
He is a nice guy with a good sense of humor. Just take notes, study, and you shouldn't have any problems. If you're worried about getting a bad teacher...don't.
Mr. Holbrook is a great teacher. He'll go out of his way to look over a paper that you have written or anything else that you want an opinion on and he makes it very clear that he's there if you need help. Tests are hard but just pay attention!
He's a great teacher who makes the class interesting. He's got a great sense of humor, and he goes out of his way to help his students.
He is a great teacher who will keep your attention the entire class period simply due to his enthusiasm. He really knows his stuff and makes you want to learn what has him so excited. I wish I had him at least once every semester!
Harder than expected for a 100 level, but if you come to class, take good notes, and study before test, can make an A without alot of effort. Tests are ESSAY, so you need to know something about each subject. Fun, bought us doughnuts! Hates Walmart!
LOVED HIS CLASS!!! Great teacher, very funny. Makes you want to learn about history. Bought us doughnuts and always had funny srories to tell us.
He is one of the best teachers ever! He makes the class fun and easy to understand. He talks too fast though...so slow him down..but overall, he is GREAT!
GREAT teacher!! very fun and energetic. a professor who really seems to care about what his students learn! essay tests that cover everything but they're not too hard. overall, highly recommended!!
Awesome teacher. He is so funny, approachable, nice. He is easy to talk to, like a friend instead of a professor. I loved this class, and he is hot in a way.
knows his stuff..he's patient with loud, idiot students. takes academics seriously but is not a prude. you'll learn - his grading is fair - just take notes - i'd reccomend him.
Dr. Holbrook is a great teacher to have. His classes have a relaxed atmosphere, and because of his enthusiasm, are actually enjoyable to attend. Just by taking good notes and studying them I was able to get an A without hardly reading the book.
Dr. Holbrook is a wonderful! I liked him so much in HST 101, that I took him again in 102! He's funny, interesting, and he actually gets the class to participate. He makes the atmosphere really friendly. Helpful on papers, easy notes, easy test! Wow!
Dr. Holbrook's teaching style makes mind numbing material quite interesting. He is quite witty and entertaining.
Holbrook is such an awesome teacher. He is so willing to help, too. I would recommend his classes to anyone. He mainly goes by notes for the test. The tests are pretty easy. I got an A in 101 and I am more than likely going to get a B in 102.
He is a very amusing teacher. His lectures are far from boring. He is a wonderful teacher and very helpful. I would recommend taking him anytime the opportunity presents itself.
I have had probably 25 or so professors at Marshall and he is by far the best out of all of them. Makes boring stuff interesting, like his saying "gotta love the Huns." I would take him if you can.
One of few professors at MU that have enough mastery of a subject to teach it truly Socratically. I hope you get a chance to take one of his discussion courses. They are awesome!
Awesome class. I looked forward to it every week. He had a friendly, fun environment and included such phrases as "delightful little meat oasis." All in all, it was good times. Fair grader, tester, and a great person in general. Take the class.
BEST and FAVORITE Professor!!!! Very interesting and smart,GREAT personality.Makes class very enjoyable, he has a great sense of humor. Very easy to understand, great at lecturing, easy to take notes from. You will look forward to class,he is very appealing ...very easy to form a crush on.
I feel that professor Holbrook is one of the best history professors I have ever had! He keeps the class interesting with his sense of humor and his in-depth lectures. You should take him if you can it is a great experience, I have learned a lot.
He is a very likeable person and makes the class bearable. (Plus he's a beast!!)
not a bad class, funny guy...The goatee's kinda freaky but the class isnt to unbearable
very good teacher, highly suggested!
Pretty cool Professor. His class was pretty easy, I never did the readings but if you do I imagine it will help a lot, he likes detail on his tests. Not a bad teacher.
Lots of fun in class, especially on his powerpoint presentations (potatoes and cod!). Grades essays kind of hard, but tests aren't too bad. He gives a study guide, so if you answer all the questions on it, you'll have a good idea of what will be on the test.
History of Science - Maybe a little bit too casual in his teaching of this class. Started well with the discussion on Kuhn's book about scientific revollutions. After that many discussions were irrelevant. But that's largely the students' fault. Didn't provide adequate feedback on papers.
Cool teacher! Very helpful to his students by phone, email, or in person. Learned alot. Earned an A. Honest, and eager to teach. Take him, you will be happy!
THis dude is just plain funny. He knows his material, he passes on the information in a usually clear manner. Not so much concise, though. Rambles a bit, but his rants often result in a humorous story. Well worth consideration.
Not an easy "A", but he is there to help and seems actually excited to be teaching. Very funny. Tests are all essay but his grading is very fair. You'll earn points for just trying. He does read them though so don't try to BS your way through them. Fun class. Highly recommended.
25% just for comming to class.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! He's very interesting and knows what he's talking about. His tests are not very easy but he gives you 25% of your grade for coming to class.
Not a bad class to take. He's a really nice guy with a great sense of humor. Very helpful if you get lost. Really knows his stuff,in addition to being very passionate about teaching. His grading system is very well done (25% of the grade just for coming). If you show up,and dont slack off too bad, you'll get at least a B.
One of the best professors at Marshall University. Everyone should take a class from Dr. Holbrook before they graduate, otherwise they really haven't had the best experience here.
Not an enjoyable class--teacher was unorganized and returned only half of all assignments handed in--tends to go off on students and curses. HE HAS NOT UPDATED MATERIAL AND TEXTBOOKS SINCE LATE 70s AND EARLY 80s...NONE OF THE BOOKS ASSIGNED HAVE A COPYRIGHT LATER THAN 1986...books: Mickey Mouse History, Wallace & Thinking and Time, Neustadt
Dan seemed very uninterested in discussing the readings he assigned. Instead he would rant about some tangential point for an hour or so and then allow a few others to dominate the discussion with pedestrian comments for the rest of the class period. Usually Dan never got around to mentioning the readings. He should understand his role as professor
Dan was extremely unorganized. Discussions often consisted of him talking over trite points. Most of the readings were never mentioned. He is rude, pompous, and arrogant. This was the worst college experience I have ever had. Each class consisted of listening to his stories about his family or Denmark, or about how stupid his students are.
This was a really cool class reguardless of what anyone says. Sometimes we would get off topic in there according to the reading, but you always leave that class feeling like you learned something.
Excellent Teacher! Very interesting and makes History fun to learn. Tests are essay and can be taugh if you dont pay attention in class. Make sure you read the chapters and know everything on the study guides. DONT WAIT TO DO THE QUIZES at the end. Do them throughout the semister, to make it a whole lot easier on yourself.
The best professor I've ever had. Extremely knowledgeable, you can tell he's really interested in his job. One of the funniest people I've been around. Doesn't expect much from students, but expects you to attend and pay attention. Tests aren't easy but he has a very fair system. Great professor. Absolutely have to take him.
Attendance is required, which sucks. He's a nice guy, & willing to give you a break if needed. Otherwise, its required that you read the text & take thorough notes to understand the topics. The on-line quizzes are pretty ridiculous, but you can take them 2 times, in attempt to get a better score.
Really great teacher.
Amazing professor. You MUST go to class and pay attention, but if you do it's not hard. He grades fairly and evenly. Also, don't leave the online quizzes until the end of the semester. He'll bite your head off if you do.
Honestly, go to class and take notes. End of story. Do your study guides... and talk to him about absences. Easy teacher. I didn't buy the book.
Really nice guy and great teacher. It's like crossing David Letterman with a history teacher. His dry, sarcasitc humor is definitely a plus, especially when dealing with ancient history. Basically take notes, do 2 or 3 online quizzes, write one online paragraph, and take 3 tests. Not to bad at all. Just make sure you read the book!
Class can be hard, especially for freshmen, but if you read the book you should be alright. The map quizzes are "gimme grades" and the tests are somewhat hard, as they are short answer/essay style. As for Danny, he is a great guy, real laid back...has a great sense of humor and will go off on some pretty funny tangents sometimes. Attend/Listen/Read
I really enjoyed this class. I like Holbrook's lecture style and I like his testing methods. He is a funny guy and a real genius as far as the history of technology (although he doesn't showcase it in this history survey course). I recommend him for history 231 and probably more.
Hated his class with a passion. The world and the west...
I would not recommend this teacher. I'd avoid him at all costs. He isn't a very good teacher. I liked our GA a lot more than I liked the teacher. I don't recommend this teacher.
Great prof. He is funny, and passionate about the subject. You have to read the book for the online quizzes so stay on top of that and he gives you study guides for tests. Great guy!
Great professor who made class interesting. He is funny and makes you want to wake up for an 8:00 am class. Low book use, so take his class if you don't want to buy an over priced book from the book store.
Dr. Holbrook is hands down the best prof in the history dept at MU. HST 400 is one of the most daunting capstones in the COLA, and Dr. Holbrook made it fun and interesting. The guy will help you out so much so don't be afraid to ask! He seamlessly walks you through he process of writing a massive term paper. I highly recommend him for HST 400.
Hated the internet half of this course but holbrook was very cool and understanding
He is an amazing teacher! I wish I could take him for all of my history classes. His lectures are very entertaining and he really tries to relate to the students.
He is a nice teacher, and entertaining during his lectures, but the topics of his lectures do not help you. He will ask you to read multiple chapters a week and then lecture about two pages of the book, if that. I have emailed questions and he does not answer unless the questions are mundane. Almost as if he doesn't want to be bothered with thought
His lectures don't cover everything. He gets off on tangents pretty easily, be prepared to do some copious reading. The online quizzes are kinda hard, but you get to redo them once. I got a B. He's a great guy, though. Really funny. Worth taking.
Excellent course and professor. Went out of his way to help students, and was encouraging all around. Essay and short answer exams, on line quizzes. Learned a lot.
He is very helpful if you have any questions. His lectures are as entertaining as possible with 1700 history. The text book is not needed, but taking notes in class is mandatory. Overall he is a wonderful teacher and person and I highly recommend taking him.
Cares about material, however he rambles about incredibly off topic subjects, sometimes for entire classes. The power points focus on random aspects instead of following in some way to the text.
good guy, very good lectures and is funny. just do the work and you will not have regrets. he is not always on point with his talks, but is entertaining anyway and helps if you need it.
I could not have asked for a better professor to take my capstone with! He is strict, but in a helpful way. Always willing to talk to you and help you with your research and paper every step of the way. He's also pretty funny in class!
Holbrook is really nice and funny. They class (102) isn't too bad either. The worst part is online quizzes;they make no sense. But other assignments are easy. Tests are essay and short answer.
Really nice teacher. He took a real interest in teaching and honestly cared about his students. If you worked hard in his class he made sure to help you.
Amazing professor, and hilarious too. Take him, probably the best History professor here! YOU DO NOT NEED A BOOK SO DO NOT BUY ONE.
He is entertaining/funny, sort of in a sarcastic way. Mainly lectures & notes! Walks around the class room, so he might randomly ask you a question! Quizzes are all on quizlet! Didn't need the book, shouldn't have bought it. But for finals, you'll need to know chapters vocabulary - the only time I used my book. And he records his daily lectures.
I LOVE Dr. Holbrook! First off, all his tests are open note! The only annoying thing is the online quizzes every week, they're harder than the tests
He was super funny and very knowledgable. I really respect him as a person and a professor. Stay on top of due dates and homework. He won't remind you about things coming up other than tests. The class is doable and isn't hard to get a good grade. Hope to take him again.
Dr. Holbrook is an extremely smart guy! You must try in his class though to get the grade you want. He is hilarious! If you show participation with a little bit of effort he will reward you! I learned a lot from his class, he is fair! Would take again!
I love Dr. Holbrook, guy really made me have a different look on life. Thanks Dr. Holbrook.
One of the more helpful professors-- very smart and always ready to help. Medium tough class.
Dr. Holbrook is one of the best professors at Marshall University. He is HILARIOUS and fun to around for an hour. Do not skip class, READ YOUR BOOK(S), and do the work thoroughly. He is a tough grader and expects you to critically think. Do not daydream in his class because he randomly picks on people to answer questions. Please take him.
I'm a history minor, so I took this online class to count towards it. So, while I can't say much about Dr. Holbrook as he would be if you were to have him in person, but at least through the internet he seemed really kind! I'd recommend him.
Dr. Holbrook is such a genuine person. He is one of the best professors at Marshall University and he cares about you, as well as your grade. Did I mention that he is HILARIOUS? This class is about conspiracies and is interesting to learn about. Show up, do the readings, even if you skim over them, and do the annotations thoroughly. You'll be okay.
Dr. Holbrook is an amazing professor that i would highly recommend. Hes a great guy and made the class fun and interesting. You learn a great amount from him, and he really makes the material interesting. I enjoyed my time in his class, which speaks volumes about Dr. Holbrook and his fun and unique style of teaching.
Dr. Holbrook is a good professor, and his class is pretty easy. Three exams, online quiz every week, and about 3-4 discussion essays. Easy class though and as long as you show up and take notes youll be fine as the questions come directly from his lectures, plus hes hilarious so its not hard to pay attention.
Very well organized and responded quickly to emails. Definitely cares about the content and wants everyone to learn.
Need the credit? Take Holbrook. I took him online, roughly a page essay every week or two. No tests, final was an essay too. Grades essays easy, genuinely wants you to think critically and you have fun doing it. Had me looking forward to the essay feedbacks too. Great man, great professor.
Fairly easy class that basically have three types of assignments. A 1 page chapter question, 2 page primary source analysis, and then tests. His grading is a little confusing in my opinion, my papers usually ranged from 92-97%, however, I do not know what made one paper better or worse. Still a good class that does require some effort.
If you show up and take notes you will be fine.
