Irritating white turtleneck attire. The most illogical, logic teacher I have ever met. Likes to scare students into thinking that something is due but later he will change his mind. Keep away from him like the plague.
Mixed feelings on this guy... He is very eccentric..but he is a philosophy prof after all. If you go to class you should do okay...i got a b+ (he never gave the quizzes he kept threatening, either)
Boring, doesn't help students with questions and lectures straight out of the book. I never went to class and came out with an A anyway.
He is very calky and doesnt like to answer questions in lecture. Test are super easy though. Study the practice tests he gives and it is a guarenteed A

This is a difficult class. Howard Snyder makes it easier because he is a good teacher. When 50% of a class gets A's on an exam it is saying something about the teacher. Howard-Snyder may come across as a jerk, but go see him in his office hours and your opinion will change
some piece of work. i don't know who this guy thinks he is. his picture of himself on his website says it all: http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~howardd/
Although DH-S is a stud, it doesn't excuse him from his teaching responsibilites. This guy told us it would be ok to not come to class and read because we wouldnt learn anything new outside the book. This guy is really something. Check out his website.
This is a very challenging class, but Howard-Snyder is frequently available extra help. The only times I have struggled are when I have fallen behind in the reading or missed class. READ THE BOOK, GO TO CLASS, AND DO THE HOMEWORK WHEN IT IS ASSIGNED. Trust me.
I was a senior in my last quater, taking a General Studies major and registered for this class because it sounded intriguing. Instead, I withdrew the third day of class because the material was VERY hard to grasp, and I consider myself a bit of a philospher. Glad I dropped it. I am now an alumni!
Prof. Howard-Snyder's 102 logic class is difficult, but do the readings, go to class and do the homework on time and you will do well. Prof. H.S. always made himself available for outside help and gave the class many other resources. He was a pretty entertaining lecturer as well.
STAY AWAY. 50% of the class withdrew. I wish I had had the foresight to do the same.
Howard-Snyder is completely unable to connect with the class, and is the spitting image of a babbling philosophy teacher. He is simply the worst teacher I've ever had and I would stay far and wide from this bum.
if you do the reading, the lectures will be clear. if you don't, they won't. he stutters and hesitates when he talks, but that doesn't make him unclear. he's a professor, not an entertainer!
I did very well in this class because I figured it out myself from the book. He is intimidating and rude to students who ask questions. As a person, I find him pompous, but he is a pretty easy grader. Let it be known: the practice midterms ARE the exams. EXACTLY. Memorize them!

he's not nearly as bad as a lot of people think he is. then again, i haven't had him for logic. if you have him for philo of religion he's pretty interesting. i'd take his class again. easy tests and easy grader :). if i remember right, he has extra credit opps as well.
Had him last quarter, but had to drop him, because he failed me on a test in which I put down all the things exactly right on the study guie. I am still not happy about it, and this was the only class I ever had to drop. Very angry.
He's not the best teacher, but if you do the homework, you will do well in the class. My grade was well over 100%. You really have to practice the material (so do the homework).
TERRIBLE
No idea what he was saying, is an absolutely horrible teacher and guy.

Very frustrating class. You put down the answers that he himself gave you in class on the tests and get failed for using the "wrong word" even when it was the correct word! When asked, he didn't know how to respond. A group of us went into his office hours, he didn't have anything to say - he acted as though we were insane for asking him questions!
agree with below, how did this guy ever get hired as a teacher? He is probably the worst teacher at Western. At least if yo uare a bad teacher, you can still give everyone good grades, but not with him.
This class is ridiculously easy for anyone with a basic concept of mathematics or logic. The web-based homework allowed me to skip about a quarter of the classes, and I still got an A.
i didn't think he was the greatest prof but the class was pretty easy... just get high and all theroems and stuff make perfict sence.. you can really see the patterns.. i went to my final high and got an A in the class

DO NOT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS, OR THIS PROFESSSOR.
Pretty easy class if you just do the homework and memorize the theories. I had no problems with him. He's a little...off...but nice enough. Luckily I didn't need much help from him so I don't really know how great he is at explaining things.
I hated this class! It was boring, and I got a D, after attending all classes, taking note, studying/filling out study guide and going into his office hours. It was the most fusterating experience I have had in 4 years at WWU!!!!
Do NOT take any classes by this man. He is very unclear, and like was said before, going to nearly every class, taking notes, and studying your butt off is not enough to get more than a D. One of the more disturbing experiences at WWU so far.
First of all, you'll do well in his classes if you attend and listen. There isn't much work involved with these classes. Howard-Snyder articulates his subject well and you can tell he loves what he does. He's also great if you enjoy ridiculous jokes.

Bragged that 11% of the F's at the entire University came from his class in one quarter.
I started off hating this class, but actually ended up enjoying it quite a bit. He overly explains things quite often, but it helps to make sure you really understand the topics. Make sure you go to the class, even though it can be boring, or you'll be very lost.
This prof is really helpful if you go to class. He may occasionally make fun of someone for asking a stupid question but overall he really loves his subject and is a really good prof if you take the time to get to know him.
Very knowledgable and helpful, made things easier to understand than the book did and made plenty of time to answer questions and do a lot of examples. Best advice is to go to class and ask any question you may have. also the homework is all online and you can do it as many times as it takes to get it right. the extra proofs are really helpful, too
Great course. I just took for credits but found philosophy very interesting. Great course if you're math/science person. He is clear and lectures are organized.
One word: Horrible.
slightly arrogant and superior; tough grader; complicated and long lectures; fairly clear, but sometimes convoluted explanations; somewhat annoying tone of voice and speech patterns; difficult tests; class is doable, but significantly more challenging than expected, and this relative hard-ass of a teacher doesn't make it much easier.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I should have withdrawn when I had the chance; the class is complicated, and the professor is not approachable. The homework is online, but the prof does not clearly explain the material so even that is very tough. Do NOT take as a GUR.
This class is challenging, but if you study and do the homework problems, you'll get an A. Plus, there are tons of opportunities for extra credit. He's not a bad professor, but sometimes he'll get stuck on a tangent. I'd recommend this class to anyone who doesn't get scared of challenging their mind.
I implore you not to take this class from this professor. He is the least pleasant member of the faculty I have had the displeasure of encountering, both in and outside of class. You have many other choices for a QSR GUR. You can tell Howard-Snyder is proud that his knowledge of philosophy is much higher than his intro students. Bravo professor!
For 102 profs, he is by far the easiest grader. He offers immense amounts of help and resources. Also, he is eager to see student success which is encouraging. You still learn what the other 102 classes learn, but you end up with a sure A if you follow his advice.
This class is pretty much as easy as it gets... If you do the homework, and do the practice exams with understanding, it is an easy class, it was always clear what he wanted you to know for the Tests... DO NOT fall behind , if you do it is hard to catch up.
This is the second course I've taken from him, and I'm pleased. This class is a little more challenging than Phil 102, but Howard-Snyder does a good job. Do the study guides before each exam to do well. He has pop quizzes to check for attendence and reading, so make sure to show up and stay on top of things.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN. I don't know what else to say. I could go on but all you need to know is DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN under any circumstances.
Boring, boring, boring. Got a D on the mid-term, but 100% on homework helped towards a B.
Unclear, arrogant, standoffish and a hard grader-this is a horrible class-I don?t recommend him in any case, worst prof. I?ve had at WWU and I graduate in the spring.
Wow, I can't believe other people had a negative experience from this guy. He was really nice to me, and he gave tons of opportunities for extra credit and study help. I just took the class for a GUR, and I ended up kind of liking the material. If you keep up on the homework, you'll do great, simple as that.
Material is hard to understand and I don't recommend it if you aren't really interested in philosophy. the teacher is good though, although a little bit dry.
Really arrogant, doesn't care much about students, socially awkward in class, makes situations uncomfortable for everyone. Basically a class in memorization, because he makes you memorize seven boring essays for each test. If you are looking three easy humanities credits DO NOT take this class. Way too much work for a 100 level class.
I enjoyed the class. While needing to be able to write 7 essays at the drop of a hat was rough, he tries really hard to make sure everyone gets it - emails, office hours, review sessions before tests. He gives extra credit, and I enjoyed that his essays often included a "say something smart/new about this topic" section - not simple regurgitation.
I had mixed reviews of DHS. He happily invested money in having Help with Logic sessions for his students, which is wonderful in my book, but his class was very confusing for me. He ran through material quickly, but then gave a lot of extra credit to those who actually took the time to do it. Not at ALL an easy A, but it wasn't horrible.
Don't let a lot of these reviews scare you. I took this class to fill my QSR GUR and ended up loving it. Just go to class and do your homework and you will be okay. If you really need extra help he is really flexible with office hours! Great class take it even if you aren't great at math. I'm considering majoring in philo because of this class!
Dan is a hottie and he is very passionate about logic, but I wouldn't suggest taking this class. It was very difficult and he moves really fast. Hardest class I've ever taken!
Self important asshat who knows more than you and wants to make sure you know it. He required us to use the crappy text he co-wrote. Expect to spend an absurd amount of time doing confusing homework online on an non user-friendly website.
Don't do it, take 102 from another Professor. The subject matter is really interesting, but this class totally bummed me out. Howard-Snyder is very intelligent, but not overly humble or down to earth. All of the homework is online, and not set up in the best manner. You can learn the same things in a different setting, with alot less grief.
By far one of the worst professors I've ever had at any university. He was totally incomprehensible, made you go out of your way to purchase a book that he had written and did not provide for purchase at the WWU bookstore. His grading system made it so that your entire grade was based only on two huge exams. He also used a website that didn't work.
This class was super easy. As long as you go to class and do the homework, you will do fine on the tests. He works his tests so that you only need to get a certain amount right to get full credit. I ended up enjoying this class, which I had no intention of doing!
DRINKING GAME IDEA: drink whenever dhs writes the opposite of what he says / confuses the entire class.
Good introduction to the world of logic truth tables. Whether that means you learn it well or it flies over your head seems very unpredictable. I personally don't think this has much to do with the teacher. He seems to explain everything inside out with examples. Maybe actually do the homework?
Prof Howard-Snyder is eccentric when teaching. Class attendance is optional. Do the homework with the textbook and go to lecture before tests. I think I failed the final yet still managed an A. So again, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It's probably what saved my grade. You will do well if you think logically, otherwise take another course cause you will fail.
Dan has a very soft voice, so in lectures it's kind of hard to hear him. Together with the fact that he reiterates the textbook (which he wrote) word for word, and his assignments are all online, there's really no reason to attend class.
he was a great teacher, best philosophy teacher to take at wwu.
Definitely the worst prof at Western. He is useless at helping and just confuses everyone in class. He often confuses himself. He makes you use his own little website to turn in homework and it doesn't work at all. When telling him this, he always replies "it's not my fault that my website isn't working"... WHAT?! Stay away from this guy/class.
This class required minimal studying/hmwrk, But, he made us do all the hmwrk on this website that was a pain in the ass. The class is simply memorizing truth tables and logic rules. As long as you try on tests, you will be given points, and its hard Not to get an A if you do the homework most of the time. class can be a snoozer, but you should go.
Dan is terrible. He is THE LEAST professional professor i have ever had(6 years of college). His class structure is horrendous, and his grading is totally biased. All he cares about is that you listen to him, hang off his every word, and help him with his research. I hate him with a passion. He gave me a D- because I didn't suck up to him.
The class itself isn't very hard at all, but he is absolutely atrocious at answering questions from other students. It's almost as though he tries to explain things in the most convoluted way possible. Seems like a nice enough guy, but just really unhelpful.
Great professor, extremely helpful. Very funny - keeps class fun and entertaining. Works hard to teach material.
Very easy class, so long as you do the homework. His actual exams are nearly identical to the practice ones, so if you can do those you'll be fine. He also gives extra credit assignments and extra credit problems on the exam (I got an 111% on the midterm). Cool professor, he kept the class entertained by quizzing us on music.
For a class on logic, it is rather convoluted and irrationally complicated. He's a nice guy and decent teacher but the nature of the class makes it hard to understand oftentimes. I wouldn't advise this class at all but again, its not really his fault, just the material is frustrating and no where near as interesting as I thought it would be
super nice guy, and pretty funny:)
I feel that there are some fundamental problems with the class, he wrote the book so he takes your questions personally. I feel his office hour (literally) is at a bad time in the week and even though yes tes material was copied from homework, that doesnt help me understand the material. I find him really immature and obnoxious.
Had D H-S for 113 and 102 (same quarter too!) He can confuse himself at times, but he always works to correct himself. A lot of people dont like him, but overall I really enjoyed both classes. He is passionate about his field and really understands what he is teacher.
D. H-S probably isn't the best teacher, however he is a good one. If you go to class every day (not hard, it's only 3h/week) you should be able to understand the material. I was able to get 117% on the midterm, and an A overall by attending class- and it took awhile for me to understand the material.
I had trouble with the material but I made a point of utilizing his office hours as often as I could and he was very helpful. If you are earnest and show him you want to learn, he'll help you out. Go to his office hours! He helped me a lot!
Somebody told me that if you are going to take a real philosophy class with him, he's opinionated as hell when grading. but this is logic! I found his terrible humor endearing, and he was very helpful if you had questions.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. I did well in the class and I still think he was horrible. Everything before the midterm was easy to understand, but I never comprehended anything after. His homework assignments were absolutely ridiculous. I suggest taking this class from someone else.
I WOULD NOT take this class for the simple reason that the professor moves way to fast and has no idea that the students he's teaching are not as good at logic as he is.
Good teacher but moves quickly through lessons. If you don't show up to class and pay attention you WILL be confused. Gives lots of extra credit. Odd sense of humor - kind of entertaining. LOTS of online homework. Not a slacker class, but really good if you actually want to learn Logic.
DO NOT let the negative reviews scare you. If you do the homework and go to class, there is no reason why you should not get an A. I am terrible at math and logical reasoning and I excelled because I wasn't lazy. It also helps that he's really passionate about Phil and has a strange but endearing sense of humor.
His class is for students who know how to work. Freshman assume it's going to be an easy QSR credit & are disappointed when they're not given an easy A. He has a very limited amount of time to teach a difficult subject. He has to move fast. Plus he offers a TON of extra credit! He's cool. Just show up to class, study & do the work & you'll be fine.
GO TO CLASS. Really easy to fall behind in this class. Found class was way too hard for only 3 credits. Gives five practice exams online to study for Midterm, the midterm was an exact copy of one of the five practice exams. He does NOT do this on the final. Second half of the quarter is way harder, and concepts difficult to grasp.
Not a hard class whatsoever. The idea of logic is just foreign at first so attending class should be prioritized at the beginning of the quarter. There are practice midterms, he does a practice final, there is enough extra credit to make up 15% + of your grade, and all homework is online. He is really approachable outside of class also!
Class was very easy and content was interesting. I attended maybe 4 times besides test days and still got an A. Though the few times I interacted with Howard-Snyder I found him supercilious and belittling; unhelpful over-all. If you're good at working independently this class should be a breeze.
Dan wasn't a bad teacher. He actually has the class involved in most of the study. It felt like it was worth WAY more than 3 credits but if you go to class, use the book, do the extra credit and go to the study groups then you can get an A. Yeah, there's a lot of work!
When registering I was interested in the topic and never missed a lecture.. but man, probably the worst professor on campus. Avoid if you can.
This class is alot of work, and the second section is definitely harder than the first, but there's alot of extra credit! He was funny, but I was too scared to ask him for help on anything due to the fact that I might be ridiculed.
I would highly recommend this course particularly with Professor Dan. He teaches with genuine passion for the course.
Dan is an alright teacher/lecturer however I find that his public ridiculing of students who simply are asking for help during class to be borderline insulting. I went in on a day off to get help before the midterm and afterward he said that he would "miss me after i failed the midterm because he thought I had a good attitude. don't recommend!
This is a really tough class for a lot of people. Its like learning a new language. Dan is a nice guy, but sometimes his lectures move too quickly. It is easy to fall behind. Fair warning, this class is not an easy GUR. If you do take it, prepare to out in a lot of effort.
The professor wrote the text for this class, as far as I'm concerned the text is all you need. Went to class 4 times (including midterm and final), anything that was hard he had answers for, during office hours. First Logic course I've taken, worth going out of your way to get this Prof.
As with any intro class, Philosophy 102 was fairly easy with very little homework. Logic is one of those things where you either get it or you don't, so it was hard for some people in the class, but if you're mathematically-minded, you won't have any problem whatsoever with that course. Mr. Howard-Snyder taught it pretty well.
He is super funny! I really enjoyed his class and the content is really easy if you just go to class, pay attention, and do the exercises. He gives extra credit too, and always answers questions really well. He truly wants you to do well and understand the material.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever had at WWU. Daniel rarely slows down during class and works at a breakneck pace regardless of student comprehension. This professor often confuses condescension with a teaching style, and I was often afraid to ask a question out of fear of being ridiculed in front of the class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
alright the class is super confusing. but if you are persistent you will get it. I really disliked the teacher. He is very arrogant and does not care about his students. In order to get his attention you have to be a teacher s pet. He only cares about his ego. I recieved a B+ because he gives so much EC because so many people fail his class.
He doesnt seem to really care about his students success, and has on multiple occasions made rude comments to students just asking for help
if you dont go to class it is almost impossible to pass
Seriously, don't do it. You will be MISERABLE. Worst class I ever took at WWU. RUN AWAY.
Logic can be difficult to understand at first but if you really try to go to class every day and do all the homework, it'll click! Also, he's nice about clarifying his concepts in class and during his office hours. His TA is also a great help too! Also, READ THE CHAPTERS BEFORE CLASS.
Logic does not click for everyone, I had to use 3 different tutors and still felt like I was drowning. Plus, he is so condescending I never wanted to ask for help or ever answer a question in class...
Run away as fast as you can. He is a NIGHTMARE. Such an ass. I hated every minute - the class material is awful as well so save yourself.
I had him for Logic 102 and 202. If you understand logic, he's great. He truly cares and wants you to understand. If you don't inherently get logic, then this probably isn't the professor for you. But, again, he's great if you have a good handle on the subject.
Howard-Snyder isn't too helpful with answering questions, but this class is easy enough if you go to class and STAY CAUGHT UP on the exercises. A lot of new concepts can be confusing at first, but watching them done in class along with getting practice from the homework helped me do well on tests. Be sure to do the extra credit for a grade boost.
He was an alright teacher, but he refused to tell us our grades. I took the final not knowing how I was doing in the class, and possibly failing.
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken. He is a great teacher who is clearly passionate about the subject, however, the content itself was difficult for me. I recommend taking this class in a quarter when you are taking easier classes as it will require quite a bit of your time outside of class.
This class is difficult and requires lots of studying. Know all material before moving on to the next section of the book. Exercises are to be done daily and he completes some of them in class with you (more in 2nd half of the class). He can make you feel intimidated to ask questions/participate.
It's easy to get an A in this class if you actually do the work. You don't need to go to class, but you do need to do the exercises. Dan offers a lot of extra credit and gives very clear examples, and as a student who hates how much kids slack off in GURs I like that he has zero patience for incompetence, it's incredibly entertaining. Go Dan!
Horrible. I took him for Philosophy of Religion and his lectures might make sense, but don't let that trick you. Most or all of his material is used to back his personal warped world view. If anyone in his class disagrees with him, he'll humiliate them in front of the entire class. He even tries to disapprove evolution. Run away.
He's not very helpful or effective. Lots of people asked him for really basic help and he just doesn't give any. The course is too hard for what it is. Makes me wonder why philosophy is even taught at the colleges anymore. I'm against tenure now, though.
Overall a nice guy, but yes, this class is tough as nails, and surprisingly hard for a 3 credit class. The teaching wasn't terrible, but I highly recommend the study group, as the class is generally too big to meet one-on-one with him.
Dan is a good guy and a good professor. He's blunt and sarcastic, but he'll help you out. Most students fail logic, and he gets a bad rep for that. But honestly, it's an easy class if you actually study and do the assignments. Easiest A I've ever gotten.
Hilarious dude, fun class and honestly I was surprised by how many people hate it. its an easy class if you put in the effort.
A lot of people don't do well in that class so Snyder gets a bad rep, but you really just have to pay attention and do the readings and homework. it's not that hard of a class, and I think he's pretty helpful.
I struggled a lot with this class, even though I attended every day and read the readings. I was in the smaller of the classes, and it was really hard. I went to speak to him once, and he was a bit harsh when I asked for some help. He also gives students weird nicknames. If you want an easy pass, this is not it. Sort of bummed me out of Philosophy.
As long as you do the homework on the assigned night, you will be fine. I didn't do the homework for the first half of the quarter until the week before the midterm, and I didn't do well on the midterm. For the second half, I kept up with the homework and understood the class a lot more, and was able to bring my grade up with the final.
Take him!! He's hella funny, and you learn like, 10 things total in this class? People over exaggerate why they didnt do well, its because they dont do the hw! He gives you everything you need to get an A and 20 percent extra credit question on each test. Just do ALL the HW and youll get an A.
This was a like a math class in a way. If you show up to class everyday, do the assignments, and practice, you will have an easy A.
Many people would benefit from taking this course. It has aided me in becoming more articulate with my arguments and speaking skills. No matter what you're majoring in, this class will be beneficial.
Be prepared to be called on even when you aren't volunteering. Going to class is important but boring, and he isn't an easy person to talk to. You will learn a manageable amount first half of the quarter then he steps it up second, almost ridiculously.
Dan "The Man" Howard-Snyder is an excellent professor, but also kind of a jerk. He loves what he does, is the pro of all pro's in his field and he will help you if you need it (Or you can go to one of the study sessions offered for 102, at least). He can be condescending and rude in class, but this is only a minor problem. Loved the class.
He is the worst prof I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. I took this class to fulfill my math GURs thinking a 3 credit class couldn't possibly be that hard, but he makes is over complicated and insanely confusing. He's pretentious, rude, and along with his inflated sense of self worth will drive you away from philosophy forever.
I was going to be a philsophy major up until taking this class, it literally changed my entire disposition. The professor is rude and incredibly pompous. He points out and teases everyone at any chance he gets and assigns way too much homework. Overall the material is pretty easy and if you can keep up with all of the assignments it is an easy A.
Dan is so helpful if you realize the options open to you. Dan gives 60 homework assignments, but only 40 of them are required for the class, where 10 are extra credit. 10 are throw a ways. So you could miss some assignments and not be negatively effected, crazy helpful if you think about it.
I didn't think an entry level course could be this tough. Dan is alright, he tries to be funny, but I had a really hard time in his class. You have homework every night that (later in the quarter) would take me 3 hours to complete. I rarely missed a class, went to every study group, and met in his office and still barely passed.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. It requires so much effort and homework for only being a 3 credit course. The professor is terrible at explaining things, but he goes over problems in class so at least if you show up you get answers. He offers two study guides & they are the exact same as the tests. It is hard to understand anything at all.
Logic with this professor is an easy A. He wrote the textbook, so you can more or less treat it like an online class. You really only need to show up to lecture if you struggle with the homework, which there's a lot of, but it prepares you well for the tests. If you want to go to grad school, tack this class on to your schedule one quarter.
I was overwhelmed by the work load, but its manageable if you don't procrastinate. Dan himself is pretty nice and encourages students to seek help if needed at office hours and study group. I was scared to take his class based off reviews but I did all my homework, attended most of the study groups, and went to every class and ended up with an A.
The most homework I've ever been assigned. Since his Intro to Logic is a gateway into the Philosophy major I had to change my major considerations based solely based on this class. He goes very very fast in lecture with only semi-adequate explanations
Was not a fan of this class at all. By far the hardest course I have ever taken, incredibly difficult with overwhelming amounts of homework.
If you do all the homework as it's assigned you should be fine, but that's easier said than done. There's a lot of it and it takes a while. He told our class that we did so well that he is going to up the difficulty for next quarter. He cares more about his ranking as the most difficult GUR than about his students.
This class is too hard for a 3 credit class. So much work. I was doing more homework for this class than I ever did for any 5 credit class. It was ridiculous. You have to come to class to really understand it, but even then, it felt like we were mostly just doing example problems. I took this class for the QSR GUR and I would avoid it if I were you
He's mean. I felt like I couldn't ask for help from him. The outside study group saved me.
moves very fast, without much explanation
This professor is frustrating. He treats students super disrespectfully. Easy A but would not recommend despite the interesting subject matter.
When asked whether or not he could meet outside of office hours to review an exam due he refused without a second thought. I commute daily 35 minutes one way and his office hours are 3:30-4:30 T & TH I only have a 10-11:50 class T & TH. When I told him this he just asked if I could, "sit around" and "just do homework." Love the class but not prof.
Phil 102 is a great alternative if you're not a math person but you need a QSR GUR. There's homework every day but none of it's due until the exam day, but try to do it everyday if you want to keep up. Dan can be a little intimidating so it's hard to ask questions some time, but the content is fairly easy to understand if you practice.
Great prof. He gives you every opportunity to practice the material in class with him and succeed. I pretty much only went on test days and still got an A (he wrote the book very well), so it's not too hard like some reviews claim. There's lots of homework, but you work on it in class with him and it really prepares you for the tests well.
Loved this class. The professor is a super nice guy with a ton of passion for what he does. Do all the homework and you will be fine. Yes, the professor can be a little intimidating, but just try not to let that affect you and approach him anyway. Overall great class.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take intro to logic with Dan Howard-Snyder. He is very unclear with instructions at times. He grades the homework unfairly. Get one wrong and you automatically get a zero. I would not recommend this class unless you absolutely have to.
A harsh grader, liked to make examples out of people, treats students with little respect. If you like classes that move quick and have routine to them, maybe this guy is for you. But be warned, if he thinks students are daydreaming, he will literally throw the textbook around the classroom and make loud noises to "wake everyone up"
It IS a lot of work. You will probably have to spend a lot of extra time doing the homework and practicing the concepts outside of class. That being said, its an easy A. Dan offers lots of extra credit, both on homework and the tests. Do the homework and ALL the extra creidit and you will do fine.
I took this class because I'm terrible at math and didn't want to take MATH 112. If you're also bad at math, I'd say take this class but know that you MUST apply yourself and be willing to spend some extra time on it. Phil's study sessions are your best friend! Use the online tutor and the study sessions and you'll be okay.
There was an unexpected amount of homework. like tons of homework. studying isn't really necessary because there's SO much homework. I recommend not procrastinating on the homework or reading because it's pretty difficult to pick up if you have to learn multiple things at once. The best thing about this class is all the extra credit. theres so much
Haven't finished the class yet but he has been really harsh and lashing out at students thus far. It feels weird asking questions and he sent us a Canvas notification saying "Get your act together or drop the class." I think it's unprofessional and he shouldn't be teaching.
If you take your classes seriously, then you'll be just fine. There is simply no room to slack off in his classes though, so just know that going in. He does get VERY animated during lectures and will call people out for not paying attention or other shenanigans. He's a great teacher overall and is clearly passionate about the material...
Whoever said that "drop the class" suggestion was inappropriate--NO ONE should ever expect to pass if they don't bother showing up for the exams and not turn in any assignments THUS THEY SHOULD DROP THE CLASS. There just isn't any excuse to not show up for a whole month. Just show up, do the assignments, and you'll pass. That's all there is to it.
Honestly all of the homework is unnecessary if you already understand the material. It's possible to get an A on the exams without doing all of the problem sets (so, no, you don't need to drop the class if you haven't turned some in; that's ridiculous) but he uses some of them in the exams... so up to you. He also kind of tends to be rude sometimes
There is a lot of work for this class which can be daunting but i found that the exercise sets were very helpful for understanding of the material. After doing 40 esets, the esets become extra credit. Attending class means he will either go over the new material or go over the assigned e-sets. He is super positive and passionate about the subject.
He's a hard man to figure out but actually truly cares. Comes across as harsh and can be scary. but hardest class I've ever taken.
This is a type of class where you either get it or you don't, and that is what's gonna make or break this class for you, but give a chance. If you do better on the 2nd exam, he'll replace your 1st score w/ your 2d one so that's nice. Not everyone likes him but I think he's funny. I did well so I'm biased. Lots of extra cred, take advantage of that!
Dan is definitely a character, and if you're sitting on your phone in class be prepared to be called out. In all honesty I rarely went to lectures and ended up with an A-, so if you study and do the work you should be fine. That said, he gives a lot of homework answers in class so if that's worth it to you, then I would say go as much as possible.
Dan was entertaining and clearly passionate about the topic of Logic. He did well to drill the material into students' heads. If Philosophy 102 counts as a math class, then this is probably one of the best math classes I have ever taken. Everything is a puzzle and always fun to hear him go off on a tangent about the material. Would recommend.
I took Logic 102, which was rated as one of the easiest classes available. It is NOT easy. Dan Snyder and roasts all his students after he calls them out to answer questions in class. there is a TON of hw. never take this class, its three credits and honestly none of it is useful and the professor is close to impossible to listen to
I found his teaching style to be very abrasive, harsh and it felt like he expected us to know every answer before he taught us how to find them. It didn't feel like a good learning environment. Questions often went unanswered or they were answered in a convoluted and round-about way.
Horrible prof. Took this GUR QSR class, hoping to pass easily enough (as it is a GUR), and maybe learn some interesting stuff about logic in the process. Well, no. Should've heeded these other bad reviews on here before taking this class. Howard-Snyder assigns so much homework that it is irresponsible of him, limiting time for other classes' work.
I took his 102 into to logic thinking it would be moderately challenging but nothing crazy. I was sadly mistaken, the homework take forever and Is graded on correction. The hw problems were so challenging it would take me 8-12 hours to do each hw assignment. He is definitely a glass half empty guy and would advise against taking this class!!
This class was enjoyable to take, however it is not for those who procrastinate. If you tend to do this, I wouldn't recommend taking this class since there is a lot of work assigned (it's manageable, but still a lot). But aside from that, Dan was fun to have as a professor, and he also uses problems from the homework to explain concepts.
This was not the class for me. I did all of the readings and still really struggled. Professor is rude and seems unapproachable. Not a lot of online sources to help you with this because he wrote the textbook. Lots and lots of homework, and if you don't get it right away, you're pretty screwed.
Dan was very intimidating and not the easiest to talk to, however, he was funny and a great teacher. He goes over the material in such an organized, clear way that it makes it seem simple. There is a lot of homework, but it helps a lot with the exams. There is a lot of extra credit offered. The class was challenging and engaging.
Dan is passionate and sassy and expects a lot from his students. He's like spicy food- some people love it and some people hate it. Logic 202 was set up for the first time this quarter as a "backwards classroom" where we study the chapter on our own and are quizzed on it in class. I loved it. Felt treated like an adult who can think for herself.
BEWARE OF THIS CLASS! Daniel Howard-Snyder is certainly a character, and cares about the subject a lot. The homework load is insane, and the tests at the end of the quarter are the hardest tests I've ever taken in my life. He's a very grumpy dude. I took this class to fulfill a math credit, thinking it would be the easier option. I was way off.
Philosophy 102 is not just an easy A, but if you do the homework and make an effort to understand it, it is really pretty interesting, and I loved the class. Dan is the only one who teaches it and he's a decent teacher, but don't take this class if you're looking to do nothing and get an A. It's not impossible, just takes effort.
Dan is very good at explaining the content. Its not an easy A but if you pay attention in class and do the homework you should be fine. The problem is that Ive never felt so disrespected after a class. Every question Ive asked has been answered condescendingly, and has made me feel stupid even if its just for clarification. Its not necessary.
Dan is a great prof but he gets a bad rep. If you don't go to class or do the homework, then don't be mad when you get a bad grade. I think he's so funny and gives lots of examples and answers in class so I highly suggest going. If you can't take a joke or sarcasm then don't take a class from him.
Dan is ok. He gives a lot of hw but if you go to class you'll do half of it as examples. He definitely needs to lighten up about his rules for turning in the HW. He's way too anal for his own good and it comes across as being rude. Overall, he is pretty good but if you do not pay attention he will call you out and fail you for the dumbest stuff.
I took this class as an elective along with other courses that I needed to take. At first i really regretted taking this class because i was confused by all the material but as time went one i started catching on the material and things got easier. Dan also offers extra credit which is always nice.
Dan is the man. When I had him for 410 it was the 4th time that I had taken a course with him, and every time I've really enjoyed it. The course is hard, and a lot of work is to be expected, but the discussion based style for the class makes understanding and analyzing the course material much more doable. All in all a solid experience
His humor is really rude and can rube a lot of people the wrong way. Externally harsh grader and encourages that if you cant meet the needed understanding after 1 week of review for all of Logic 1 you should drop the class. Also flaunts that a lot of his students fail which is a terrible sign for his classes and a trait for a prof to have.
Dan is a funny guy, and I don't think his classes are as hard as they're made out to be. He's undoubtedly knowledgeable. Still, I just don't get the feeling that he cares about his students all that much. He is not the type of teacher that treats you like an equal.
Phil 104 is a very hard class and the most failed class at WWU. Very math heavy and lots of homework. It's only worth 3 credits and not worth the effort and the subject taught is not useful. He is very strict about homework and tests and is unforgiving of late work. The class is all lecture, 2 tests and around 50 homework assignments.
Logic is very difficult in general. Professor Snyder is a good funny guy but the class could be easier if he was able to provide more help, maybe some small quizzes. You need an 18/30 on at least one exam to pass even though there's so much homework. Too much homework for a 3 credit class.
Personally I dont have a problem with him. Hes an entertaining teacher and nice enough and you can always go to him for help. However the class is so much work. Its called a philosophy class but its honestly more like math. Out of all my GURs Ive taken so far this is the class with most homework.
While he's effective at teaching, the homework is graded unreasonably. It's not accepted at all if: it's not stapled (he doesn't have a stapler), your student ID isn't on the front page (name has to be on the back), and more specifics that I don't have room to write. I got a 99% on the first exam but my grade was dropped to an 80 due to homework.
I did not enjoy this class at all, I regret not dropping it. During class, hed often ask the class after explaining something, to raise our hands if we understood. Only a 1/4 of the class would raise & he didnt explain more. Hed randomly call on people in class. He gave off a strict/scary vibe. This class gave me anxiety and it was so hard.
personally i think dan is annoying, but he is very upfront about all of his expectations throughout the quarter about hw, tests, when things are due, etc. the class follows the syllabus perfectly, so there are no surprises. the homework load is objectively unreasonable. i still enjoyed it enough to take the next logic class, though.
There were no lectures in 202, just working on HW in class. He's there to answer Qs but he ofc can't get to everyone. Only thing you'd lose by buying the book and doing it on your own time is office hours. Too much HW; 5 credit class' worth of material for 3 credits. Grading too strict: Get 2 problems wrong on a set and you get a 0 for that set.
Dr. Howard-Snyder can seem harsh at first, but he really cares about students. Dont be afraid of office hours and asking for extra help. I started out in a bad place and he spent countless hours helping me succeed. Funny, witty, and a bit dry: Try not to fall behind on homework. Learn the reason behind the rules and youll do great!
Dan Howard-Snyder is so proud of the fact that this Phil102 course is the most failed GUR on campus. There's an intense amount of homework due in very short time periods and the lectures are nonsense. If you miss one class you're screwed. I don't expect college courses to always be super easy, but for a 100 level course? This class is ridiculous.
He is obviously a smart prof who loves what he teaches. However, the lectures were long and the slides were cluttered in words making note-taking a struggle. The quizzes were moderate. Also, he will probably make really specific examples about hiking and outdoorsy stuff that connect to the lecture but they're definitely just stuff things he's done.
Heres what students need to know: No classes or lectures or anykind. Strict grader, never any partial credit. If you have a "set" of problems, say 15, and get more than 2 wrong, you will get a 0 for the whole set. Basically hands you a textbook to teach yourself He is great for office hours, but that does not make up for the lack of his teaching
Okay so Professor Daniel Howard-Snyder has a pretty low rating, and I was nervous as I had to take him for my major (intermediate logic). He's not a bad teacher. The problem is he teaches logic, which is a very challenging course, even if you like it. This class would be hard no matter who taught it. I had no real issues with him specifically.
Logic 202 is a notoriously difficult class. For me, this class was basically an uphill battle the entire time. However, Dan is very accessible outside of class and his office hours were an absolute necessity for me. If you take advantage of your resources and put in the effort, you will do great!
If you're thinking about taking PHIL113 asynchronously with Professor Howard-Snyder, don't. Assignments were boring and focused too much on technicalities rather than discussion and self-reflection, which I think is important in philosophy classes. All quizzes just wanted information regurgitated word-for-word from his video lectures.
I've been taking Professor Howard-Snyder' "Philosophy of Religion" course asynchronously and he will upload 3-4 videos a week usually about 15 minutes each with a quiz after each video. He uploads multiple choice questions with each possible answer being at least a paragraph long and seemingly identical save for a change in the order of a few words
Taking this class async. It's an OK class, just be ready to take excruciatingly accurate notes on the lectures, as the tests are basically just the lectures regurgitated word-for-word. It isn't awful, they're pretty interesting and well explained- although I feel like this class would have been much more interesting in person/synchronous.
I took intro to logic a few years ago and I'm still haunted by this absolute ghoul of a man. A very small percentage of the class understood what was going on, and DH-S was MEAN. He belittled students in front of the entire lecture hall for asking questions, and assigned so much hw that it took countless hours to complete, just to get a bad grade.
Just a bad experience... wouldn't recommend to anybody. People take this class for a 3 or so math credit at WWU but they don't know what they are getting into. Howard Snyder is constantly rushing though lessons, and isn't very accommodating or anticipating of what his class needs at all.
Intro to logic is the most failed GUR at Western and for good reason. Howard-Snyder doesn't really try to actually teach; it's more like he just expects you to understand the concepts if you're smart enough, and if not, he doesn't want to waste time on you. There is WAY too much homework for only a 3 credit class.
Professor Howard-Snyder gets a bad representation on this website. Yes, he does seemingly rush through lectures, but he definitely will help to answer your question if you keep your hand up long enough. People forget that professors are also human, and Daniel is a good human. Take your own education into your own hands & I promise you will be fine.
DO NOT TAKE PHILOSOPHY 102 WITH THIS PROFESSOR. This is one of the worst classes I have taken. His late work policy is nonexistent, the majority of the class failed the FIRST exam, lectures are repetitive, and in-class time is poorly structured. Admittedly, the subject material is very challenging but he does not assist in clarifying it at all.
DHS is a really great human. Sometimes his teaching style does fit with some students, but there are ample opportunities to get extra help. sure theres a lot of work, but its not too difficult and the extra practice helps a ton. You do like half of the homework in class together and reading quiz answers are in the textbook.
the way he talks annoys the duck out of me. all he does is belittle students but if you're into logic it works itself out. lots of camaraderie bc we all hate him and feel like we're gonna fail constantly
Lectures filled with tangents; Doesn't incorporate class participation; Unclear grader.
Dan Howard-Snyder is one of the worst professors at WWU. He expects new students to already be skilled at Philosophy, is a very strict grader, doesn't present his information clearly or effectively, and has a really flawed grading system. I took one of his classes at the start of the quarter, and I immediately dropped out. Yeah, it was that bad.
It is not even the fact that the content of this class is difficult but more-so about how Howard-Synder teaches. He's been teaching the same way for years and is unwilling to be less rigid in the fact not everyone learns the same way, if you talk to anyone who has taken it with him, most of them drop the class or don't do well. That's for a reason.
Unable to reckon with the fact his lectures are not substantial and interactive enough to prepare his students for his tests so he prides himself on his high fail rates - attributing student failure to their ill-prepardness rather than his lackluster professing. Palpable ego.
Mean. Big ego.
I did not find the material too difficult. In the end, though, I dropped it because the professor was so inflexible and honestly cruel in his teaching & grading style. in my opinion, to give a homework assignment 0 because more than 3 answers out of 10+ were wrong, or a formatting error, is not reasonable in a 102.
You know the drill: If you don't have to take 102, DON'T. Dan is super condescending towards students who ask questions and the content in class is just him repeating the textbook. Would not take again even if you paid me a million dollars
Just no. Attendance technically not required, but only way you are able to learn the info for the class is if you show up. Nowhere else does he put what he talked about in the class, doesn't use power points. Everything you need to know is verbally taught, he talks quick, and doesn't take breaks to allow students to finish writing things down.
Professor DHS is honestly a really nice guy. Going into this class I knew nothing about philosophy and decided to take it to have some fun, and that was not the result. Only graded on 3 exams and no homework, which I guess was pretty nice. DHS rarely stops during lectures for students to finish writing notes. I don't recommend this course!
Prof DHS gets a bad rap because yes, his classes are fast paced and lecture heavy, but I honestly really enjoyed his class. As long as you pay attention and stay engaged, it should be easy to do well in his classes. I also went to just about all of his office hours, where he is far more laid back and fun. He likes to see students think.
I have taken PHIL 113 and 331. He is very passionate about the subject/the reading material. Classes have a socratic seminar-ish structure, with lectures and discussions. However, you will read and write a TON for 331. Throughout the entire quarter, I wrote 8-10 pages per week for this class. Classes are an easy A if you like to write essays.
Worst prof I've had by far. Super annoying and unbearable to sit through a lecture with. Has the worst grading system ever, but the class could be decent if he wasn't the teacher. Bro asked me to email him about something, then when I did 5 seconds later, he proceeded to take a week to respond which f'd me. hate this guy with a passion
This class has a mixed rep - the material isn't too hard, but the professor can be very strict and condescending. Stay engaged, use the textbook, and try tools like unstuckstudy to prep. With effort, you can get through it.
