very clear/understandable power point lectures. his exams are difficult and he adamently does NOT grade on a curve, but he wants you to do well and he offers extra credit reports for each lecture exam.
He's hard, but not as hard as some other anatomy teachers. He talks really fast, but he's fun too!
He's a good professor because he tells you what you need to know for the test and does not make it a surprise. He makes information clear and understandable.
This teacher is awesome. You have to understand the way he teachers and think like him but otherwise he is terrific. Super nice and if you debate him expect to hear about it in your large lecture class so be prepared. :-) it's really a fun class and not that hard because I sat on the back row and still got a B+. good luck!!
Amazing man of God. The class is tough but he is more then willing to help you if you ask questions or stop by his office. I would highly recommend him to everyone. There is a lot of subject matter to cover but he knows his stuff and goes through everything in an organized orderly fashion.
It's a hard class but Dr. Howell is an amazing teacher.
Incredibly hard class. Take every chance you get to go into the lab and study, or meet with him for any questions you have. Overall, he's great teacher, and genuinely cares for all his students :)
Dr. Howell is an amazing professor who has a passion for his subject and truly cares for his students.
he is an amazing professor! Easy to understand, funny, laid back, extremely smart! I absolutely love him. if you have the choice... GET HIM
The greatest Anatomy teacher at the university. Intelligent, funny, informative, well spoken, and he created the notebook that is used to follow along with the lectures. Absolutely take him for Anatomy if you can.
An extremely good teacher. This class requires a whole lot of studying. Howell is willing to help if you are having trouble understanding the material...trust me I know...I have gone to him several times. He is also a funny guy...definitely keeps your attention.
Dr. Howell is an DYNAMIC teacher! His lecture guide was so useful and helped me feel prepared for class. He shows a genuine interest in the student and wants us to succeed. He bends over backwards to be available to help the students. I feel so prepared to continue my studies in Nursing, since taking his Anatomy class. :)
Awesome! Such a great teacher! He made everything very applicable and has a great sense of humor. Fun labs and the exams were hard but you just have to put alot of time into studying, like all anatomy classes.
Dr. Howell is an AMAZING teacher. He gives you a lecture guide that you use for everything. You honestly wont use your book too much, but if you ever needed clarity on something its good to have so definitely buy it. He really cares about his students. This class requires SOOOO much studying, don't take that lightly otherwise you'll do horrible!!
Dr. Howell made A&P fun. He kept my interest during class and was always willing to answer questions.
he is awesome!
Take him, and you will know why everone likes him. He is the best one.
Best professor at liberty. take him
Dr.Howell's intelligence is far beyond any undergraduate course. He is a humble genius who should be teaching in graduate or medical school. Every lecture makes perfect sense. Any question asked can be answered and explain in depth on the spot. Dr.Howell is the greatest teacher at Liberty University...Barefoot for life
Great professor! Very funny and easy to listen to. I learned a lot from him.
Dr. Howell is an amazing man and teacher. he brings a background of biochemistry to his anatomy lectures. He explains everything so well. You have no choice but to make an a or b in his class if you show up and give you best focus to his lecture
He is great.
Dr. Howell is one of Liberty's best professors!!! He's so fun and interesting for Biology, and makes everything so much more understandable! TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Howell is simply the BEST choice for anatomy. Not only is he histerically funny, but he is quite intelligent and can dumb down even the most complicated matters so that the rest of us can understand. Read the text book and study the lecture guide, and you will do well!
Great teacher who is passionate about the subject and truly stands in awe of how we can see God's glory in the complexities of the human body! I'm not a huge fan of science but this class was super interesting. I enjoyed the professor's humor and common language that he applied to the material that made it easier to understand!
Very good professor and I highly recommend him, but be ready for a challenge since his tests require a TON of studying.
Professor Howell, simply put is amazing! He makes everything so clear and understandable and he is absolutely hilarious, so it makes learning that much easier and better,
Doctor Howell is intelligent and consistant. He keeps the material relatable but not stupid. He will make you stretch and bend but not break. but he won't let you sit and atrophy. In 5 years it is the best class I have taken. As an ART major.
Very good teacher. He knows how to explain things VERY well and is really funny. Not the easiest class but he is the best teacher for this class! He knows what he is talking about and keeps it interesting! Take him!
Dr. Howell was my favorite professor this semester. He shows a genuine interest in the material and makes the class exciting. He uses many different media forms to incorporate different learning styles. I had to study hard for my A but learned SO much throughout the semester. Whatever you do, take Howell!
Not a big fan of how he runs his lab. All of the people I know that have As in his lab have those grades because they were good guessers. His tests were virtually impossible to study for. I would not recommend him for lab. I can't say anything about his lecture. Don't believe me? Go ahead and let his lab screw with your GPA.
OK, so he can be a little scatter brained at times, but he is an awesome professor. He is funny, which makes the long lectures and labs bearable.
Great teacher, made class interesting and was entertaining. I plan on taking him next semester for both 2nd semester lab and lecture. If you study the lecture guide thoroughly, you should be good
Howell is a FANTASTIC teacher. He made the lectures very interesting. He is extremely funny in class and super smart. He even provides a lecture guide where ALL of his tests are taken from. The textbook isn't needed. You have to do the homework for a grade but he doesn't read it. The tests are very difficult if you don't study. TAKE HIM.
Professor Howell is a great professor! He made me love this course and I would totally take it again. I got an A in this class and learned a lot.
Favorite teacher I have ever had!!! Doesn't take class attendance, but you wont want to miss a class because he makes you love learning the material. Also super funny and makes the lectures entertaining as well as easy to understand. Genuinely cares about his students. Literally greatest teacher in the world, i wouldn't lie to you.
I took BIOL 213&214 Fall '13 & BIOL 215&216 Spring '14 with Howell. He is enthusiastic, humorous, simplifies complex biological concepts, and one of the most memorable profs you will have. I highly recommend him only for lecture (BIO 213&215) because he is too disorganized and lax in labs (BIO 214&216). Take lectures with him, not labs.
One of my favorite professors at Liberty!
Absolutely the best professor in the science department at Liberty. He makes learning anatomy so much fun and really breaks down the difficult concepts. Not to mention he has a great sense of humor. You still have to put in the work to get the grade, but it is a lot easier with his notes. highly recommend him!!
Highly Recommended
Best professor in the science department hands down! He is hilarious and a great teacher. He explains things well and keeps his lectures interesting. Love this man.
Professor Howell, genuinely cares for his students. Bio 213 is a hard class no matter who teaches it, however, he gives a lecture guide for his class which makes it much easier to follow. He is also very willing to work with a student if he/ she desires it. All in all, Great teacher, although tests can be a bit challenging.
Howell is godly and inspiring. He loves the Lord & loves anatomy! His tests are hard (I studied 12 hours for one test, got a D). Some are more bearable though. You need to study a lot. Homeworks are 1-2 weeks, all he does is lecture, takes attendance like 5 times, skipping class doesn't hurt you at all, and he posts all PPTs. I LOVED him!
Dr. Howell is my favorite professor so far. He is extremely knowledgeable about anatomy and his lectures are fun to listen to. He brings in relevant new discoveries that are truly fascinating. You have to study for his class, but it's not unreasonable. I was genuinely sad if he ended lecture early. Whatever you do, take Howell. You won't regret it.
Do yourself a favor and take Howell over any other option. He's quirky and awkward but he knows what he's talking about and the prezis that he posts are all you need to study for an A. He makes a difficult class fun and he doesn't wear shoes.
Amazing professor. Always enjoyed class and learned so much. He makes me want to be an anatomy teacher!
By far the greatest professor Ive ever had. Super knowledgeable of anatomy as well as other subjects. Does a great job of incorporating in biblical principles. Lectures are certainly never boring, but definitely be ready to study for the exams, though they arent easy the material is laid out for you.
I didn't love Howell as much as I was told I would. His lectures are interesting but his tests averages were always very very low and I feel that reflects the teacher's abilities. The tests are very difficult, but he posts powerpoint that are helpful. Sometimes he skips over material in class but puts in on the test anyways.
His lectures are sometimes boring but I can tell he tries his best to make it fun. You really don't even need to show up for the class as he posts the material afterward, sometimes I feel like going to his class was a waste of my time. He does go off topic a lot so beware. Overall I think he is a solid professor over the other Bio professors.
Gets off topic a ton. There is basically no point to be in his lectures. He doesn't use the book.
Professor Howell is very knowledgeable about anatomy and has a solid way of teaching so his students can understand. However, his tests are very hard and unless you're learning style is auditory or just reading powerpoints, studying for his tests are really hard.
I enjoyed Dr. Howell's lectures. He gets off topic a lot which helped me focus and kept my attention. He tests based off his powerpoint and not the textbook. His teaching style uses a lot of examples like some drawings and many analogies.
Dr. Howell shouldn't have a job at liberty. His hateful speech towards those on the opposite side of the political aisle goes directly against the mission of the university. I am about to graduate in a week, and I will say that taking his BIOL 316 class was the most disturbing thing that I've ever experienced in my time at this great university.
Professor Howell was my least favorite professor this semester. I went to every lecture and learned nothing. He never stays on task and always makes rude and offensive comments. Additionally, I studied 10+ hours for every exam and could barely get higher than a C. Intelligent man in his field, but he doesn't seem to care about his students.
Professor Howell is a very intelligent person, he just is not a very good teacher. He does not take any differing opinions and shoots them down immediately. I pretty much had to teach everything myself, which is why I did not get a very good grade in the class. He didn't use the textbook at all and also gets very political for literally no reason.
No sympathy for others whatsoever. Should stick to being a scientist instead of a professor. Gives the hardest tests anyone could imagine and says he goes straight off the power points which clearly isn't true.
Howell may be a funny teacher that doesnt wear shoes but DONT take his class unless you have to. The only grades are tests and long homeworks. Other than class lecture and office hours, he doesnt do anything to help his students. No extra credit, and the tests are impossible to get a B on unless you study 15+ hours. No study material given.
Do not take Dr. Howell unless you have to. This class is way more challenging than it needs to be!
As a future nurse, BIOL 213 is a foundational course. The course is specifically designed to be challenging as it is the base for a nurse's future educational and professional career. I applaud Dr. Howell for keeping it challenging. The course forces you to think and learn independently OUTSIDE of his lectures.
Ok I got a lot of mixed feelings when talking about Howell hes a great guy but not a great professor. He just reads a PowerPoint and doesnt really teach. His tests are so hard now because he takes them on TopHat and he can add a lot harder question then he used too be able too. You can get an A if you study all the time like 15+ hours. Good luck!
Great guy and good anatomy professor. Dr. Howell knows the human body well, and his tests are fair. He tests straight from the powerpoints, so study those and you'll be fine. Not the easiest A, but an A is definitely doable as long as you put in the work.
Doesn't give guidance on what's expected on tests. All lectures are posted online, so attending class doesn't really help to understand the information. Goes off topic a lot.
Howell honestly seemed like he didn't care enough to put the time into preparing decent and organized lectures. When he wasn't ranting about politics, he would rant about the foot or just read off PowerPoints. He didn't seem to care about his students at all and almost wanted us to fail. I am so glad I'm done with his class because I hated it.
Loved him as a person but not as a professor! Got sidetracked a lot and would give us stuff in the exam that we literally just went Ive the day before or didnt even touch on! Classes above us said that he gave extra credit, but not anymore! Another thing I dislike is that he literally just reads the PowerPoints and doesnt really teach.
I would not recommend Professor Howell. I had a very hard time passing his class. He gives minimal feedback that is not encouraging. It makes no difference to him if you pass or if you fail. If you fail he will tell you that you're not meant to be at LU.
As a student with straight A's I can honestly say it was hard for me to maintain a B in this class. I felt as if he did not want his students to succeed, the questions on tests were misleading, the PowerPoints were hard to follow, and his lectures consisted of rabbit trails about feet. I would not recommend this professor to anyone.
Liberty needs to add another option for Anatomy professor. Dr. Howell absolutely does not care if you fail in fact he loves it. He puts trick questions on tests, puts info you didn't cover (he never teaches just read powerpoints) on tests. Very arrogant and never answers emails and is not available. I studied all the time and still didn't do well
Something must have happened in Dr Howell's life from reading reviews from years ago he sounded like a good professor but that is simply not the case anymore. He is rude and uncaring and not available. He makes his tests way harder than they need to be. He is disorganized forgetful but will never admit he made a mistake. Very condescending.
I would not take Dr. Howell again. He gets so distracted during lectures and rabbit trails a lot. He also makes inappropriate jokes and talks a lot about politics. His tests are very difficult, but if you study the prezis you do okay.
I am begging you!! PLEASE FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR. I've been stuck with Howell for Bio 213 and 215 and I am sick of it. His personality and teaching skills are just not the move and its been so frustrating being in his class. I've always been a straight A student and can not for the life of me get As in his class. Please learn from my mistake. RUN
Howell is tough, but he challenges you to understand what you're learning about, instead of just memorizing terms. His lectures are really engaging, even when he get's sidetracked. He tests solely off slides, so study those, make sure you understand how all the concepts fit together, and you'll do fine. He's pretty helpful in office hours, too.
Professor Howell does care about his students. He prayed for me multiple times in the semester and gave me great life advice. Take him.
Professor Howell is my favorite professor. He really keeps class interesting. When the corona virus moved our class online, he really rolled with the punches and did an outstanding job with the transition. He shared a lot about his personal life which made him more approachable.
Dr. Howell is a nice guy, but his exams are unreasonably difficult. He says everything on the exams comes from the power points, but his notes are hard to follow.
As hard as I worked in this class, it didn't pay off. Although he is very knowledgeable about A&P, he isn't good at preparing his students for exams. At first I thought that was just how A&P was supposed to be. However I took 215 with a different prof and worked just as hard and easily passed with an A. If you can avoid it, choose a different prof.
Dr. Howell's a great lecturer, and is really entertaining to boot. His tests are tough, but are fair for the most part. His course isn't easy, but you can definitely get an A if you put in the effort.
Dr Howell is not the prof you want for anatomy and phys. He was notorious for heavy lectures, but many were not on the topics of class material. Whether physics or politics, there were times a whole class went by and no class material had been covered. You are not given the power-points and his notes are so hard to follow. Tests are VERY hard.
BIO213 with Howell is a whole other level as far as studying outside of class goes. His lectures are not relevant to the material, he gets off topic (usually political), yet still expects us to know the material that was "supposed" to be covered. Does not give study material. Is hard to communicate with. Makes tests/class worse than other profs
Super quirky, but a really great professor. Doesn't wear shoes and has a lot of fun stories. Super smart in his field and teaches very well.
Do not take Dr. Howells class. His tests are impossible. His lectures are pointless because he goes off topic too much. I'm failing his class just because of his tests. If you want a good grade you would literally have to study 15+ hours. Honestly ridiculous.
His lectures are so interesting! His tests go mostly off the powerpoints but he adds stuff in lectures for tests. He is nice but takes a lot of time to give feedback. I've emailed him several times and he always takes over a week to answer:( Great class though! He obviously knows his stuff! There's no extra credit but it is not impossible to get A.
DO NOT take Dr Howells class. Worst decision I ever made. His tests are impossible and he does not cover half of the information needed to do well on them. He derails in lectures and rambles about politics, or anything that is not on the topic of A&P. He gives no help if you ask, and was not helpful at all to students who went to him for help.
Dr. Howell is wonderful. Take him!
I dont know whos posting the low scores for Howell, but they clearly arent in his class. I took his class this semester & he never once ranted about politics and we just went through the crappiest presidential election in history. He never talked about stuff off topic. He provides his lectures in three formats. And he DOES offer extra credit.
I, unfortunately, had an awful experience in Dr. Howell's class. He has the tendency to teach things that will NOT be on the test. As much as I love his quirky attitude, he tends to get off topic which makes it very hard to get the information needed for the test. I would recommend him based on his personality, but not on his teaching style.
He's the worst. RUNNNNNNNN
I had heard good and bad things (mainly bad) about Howell when I was going into the class (mostly from A&P students). But, he wasn't as bad as everyone made him out to be. His lectures were fun but very information-heavy. He expects that you know your stuff when it comes time for the exams. Just be prepared for him to talk about feet... a lot.
Interesting guy, but very enthusiastic about his work. He basically just reads from his powerpoints though so I sort of just taught myself, but could easily get ahead if I wanted. sometimes rabbit trails.
I originally was not a fan of Howell; although, I have grown to like him. His tests are tricky & his notes can be difficult to follow. BUT he really does know his stuff, & he seems to really care about his students. Be prepared to study A LOT; do not save it all for the day before the test. He does make you work HARD for it, but an A is achievable
If you want to genuinely cry while taking your tests, this is the class for you! He goes on rants about feet, doesn't cover what he needs to cover for the tests, SUPER test heavy(If you fail the tests you wont pass the class). One positive is that he gives you the weekend to take the tests online.
FRESHMEN: don't believe all the reviews, ask real students! People hate Dr. Howell b/c his class is hard. Your grade is the tests, but he actually teaches. He has high standards, but cares. Students here complain b/c they aren't mature adults capable of communicating. If you want to learn, take Howell. You want a grade, someone else.
Good professor overall, other students are in nursing anatomy (213), I took the pre-med 313 anatomy. The exams aren't difficult if you study for them; honestly, I prioritized my other biology classes, it wasn't too hard for me. Study the PPTs!
At the moment, his class was the hardest I've ever taken but it prepared me to do well in my future classes. You have to know the powerpoint by heart, and the tests are pretty tough, but an A is definitely doable. Most people just don't put in enough time. Write it out and put in the time! Don't be discouraged by the bad reviews, I LOVED Howell.
I feel like the people who give bad reviews are the ones who do poorly. And honestly, they usually just don't study well or long enough. If you're in the class you're probably a nursing major and guess what, you're gonna have to learn to study a LOT! It only gets harder from here, so use his class as a way to learn and prepare yourself.
Horrible professor. He spends half his time going off track and then rushes in the last bit of time left. His tests are unreasonably hard, even if you attend class and study hard. He also promotes a lot of weird beliefs and ideas that he is, rather than teaching the class from a neutral educational standpoint.
Howell was an engaging and kind professor but I found the tests to be very difficult, no matter my study method or how much I studied.
He is the least boring professor I've ever had. If you tend to fall asleep easily in class, take him! He is engaging.
Howell is a weirdo and we love him for it. Doesn't wear shoes and when you leave his class you will also question why you do. If you're the conspiratorial/hate the government/prepper type, take him, you'll jive. He is very clear on his lectures and tests are fair. Normal teacher with a great and engaging personality
I took Professor Howell for BIOL 215. After taking a different professor for 213, I was taken off guard. His tests are very detailed , you must know specific values. However, I learned a lot in his class and he is one keep class entertaining. You must attend lectures in order to get the random things he throws in on the tests. Overall, fine class.
This has got to be the worst professor at Liberty. The information on the tests is not on the powerpoints and he uses his own powerpoints instead of using the powerpoints provided by the university. He delights in failing his students and I would recommend any professor over him.
The teacher was great. The part I didn't like about his course was that he was fast with subjects. It's important to watch he lecture recordings if you want to understand
Great professor. He is very funny and very easy going. He makes all assignments online and is very easy to work with. Purposely tries to make his class as easy as possible.
A very misunderstood professor who in my opinion is a genius. If you ACTUALLY want to learn Biology take him, he has extensive knowledge on this topic. This class is not easy and you will have to study hundreds of slides for each test. I am also very glad that he talks openly about his viewpoints and beliefs and is not scared to share his mind.
While I am not taking Howell again next semester due to a variety of reasons, I respect him as a teacher. He is a tad eccentric, sure, but he loves what he teaches. His tests are rather difficult and I would recommend turning all of his PPTX slides into flashcards if you can. Also listen closely to what he emphasizes in class.
I was surprised to hear some people didn't like Professor Howell, as he's been the best professor I've had. While others found it hard to study for his exams, I had the opposite experience. Studying the PowerPoints and rewatching lectures worked perfectly—I didn't even take notes, just used Quizlet and reviewed the material.
He had a broad and deep knowledge of biology and other subjects such as history, technology, and Christianity. Everything was open book, though the only grading ever done were homework quizzes and exams, based on readings and lectures. Howell was funny, inspiring, and integrated the faith well. The course was great as a natural science elective.
His class was not that hard you will do well if you study from the PowerPoints. Its mandatory to go to class but really no need to stay, you can learn everything from studying the PowerPoints yourself. He's funny, easy going, and very passionate about feet.
I personally wouldn't recommend Dr. Howell. I don't believe I benefited from his class and his lectures were boring and his tests were incredibly hard. I wouldn't recommend. His teaching style wasn't beneficial for me at all.
Howell's class is challenging but engaging. The tests are tricky, so staying on top of the material is key. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for practice and preparation. Overall, an intense but rewarding experience if you're willing to put in the work.
He's alright. Very mid. Tries to make it fun but 9/10 times his jokes don't land. Yeah no shoes...He is defiantly a character.
Dr. Howell is entertaining, and his lectures are fun. However, I thought his class was pretty challenging. He goes into tangents a lot, exams were pretty difficult, and he does not offer any extra credit. Take notes in class and review the PPTs because he pulls questions from them. And make sure to do all the homework, it'll save your grade!
