easy to understand. good teacher. great sense of humor.
BEST TEACHER EVER. I recommend you try Deaf Studies even if you have little or no interest in the field. It's a fun way to ear four credits. :)

Dan is a great guy, and even though he doesn't talk, it's amazing how you understand what he's teaching. He's a great ASL teacher, and he's pretty good looking too. = )
Great fun teacher.
He has a great sense of humor and really doesn't mind answering personal questions if they help ones understanding of the culture
He was there for his first semester so things got kinda choppy. I loved his outlook on life and got to know him well. I respect him and would reccomend him to anyone looking to learn about the deaf culture.
He has great methods to learning this language and tries hard to make sure that his students are doing thier best.

Dan Humphrey is a really great teacher. He is deaf, but even if you don't know ANY sign language, you can get an A in his class because he is such an excellent teacher and he is very knowledgable on the best teaching techniques for ASL. The classes are so
He is the best DFST teacher on campus. Also hilarious. Take him when ever you can!
I really enjoyed his class. He signed great stories, and made the class enjoyable.
Even though he is deaf he is an awesome teacher. He makes the class a lot of fun.
I feel Dan is a very good teacher. I have had him for 3 classes, and even though he is a little bit tough, he is very fair and always stops what he is doing/saying, and answers any and all questions from students. I am looking forward to having him as a teacher again.
I only had him for one class( two years ago).. BUt he never forgets a face.. He's the best Deaf Culture teacher out there and only with him will truly understand deaf culture
I can only reiterate what his other students say. Dan is an awesome professor. I have deliberately sought out his classes. If you want to experience true deaf culture - this is the professor you want to take at AVC.
He is deaf, he will always make sure that you understand what he is signing to you. He'll play sherades and he teaches you what deaf people already (automatically) know. It's always fun in there and he looks out for you. Don't worry about communicating with him, he'll always find a way!
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!!!!! extremly eager to teacher and always ready for class. One of the BEST teachers i ever had*_*
Awesome professor! Dan makes me want to attend class every time!
One of the best dfst teacher i ever had!!! He is always looking for new ways to teach his class, and is aklways in a good mood. It was one of the few classes i looked forward to every Tues, and Thurs.!!!!*_*
Dan is a great teacher, he make class time fun and worth it. he is always in a good mood but you don't want to make him mad by being rude/whispering i've seen it happen to students who didn't think he'd notice, just because he's deaf dosen't mean he won't notice if your talking. i would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn asl.
He continues to deliver a superior education to the students of AVC. His expectations are high, but fair. He pushes his students to strive for their goals. And he works tirelessly to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing communities.
he's a great teacher. very discriptive and down to earth... i will deffinately look forward to more classes with him.!
this guy is freaking awesome he is deaf but he will go slow so you can understand him if you want to learn sign language take it w/ this guy
Absolutely amazing! Dan has a way of making people understand Deaf Studies so easily. He's funny and always there if you need help with something. The tests are simple if you go to class and the research paper is really easy if you read the book. I highly recommend taking Dan for 101.
Dan is one of the best teacher that i've had! If you want to learn ASL..take him you'll totally get it! He's so into his job! And strives to make you a better student. He's funny, and very good looking=]
Dan is a great teacher. He's more than willing to work with you to help you learn something. He has high expectations but he's more than willing to take the extra time to make sure you understand.
He is very flexible...enjoyed his class..
Mr. Humphrey is an incredible teacher. He has very high standards,he takes his job, culture and teaching SERIOUSLY, dont B.S. him, and you dont want to see him pist off! on the other hand he sincerly cares for his students, and he is so patient and nothing, is stupid to him, he will teach you until you get it. He's eye candy too. LOL sm
I love this class! Dan has an amazing ability to teach hearing people to understand not only ASL,but Deaf culture as well.I have only seen him mad once and it wasn't all that bad.Don't talk & don't text. That simple. All he wants you to do is learn. He is passionate and wants to share ASL with hearing poeple.Great class. Its an easy class is you apply.
I took Dan for ASL 1 and 2. great teacher, You learn so much becasue he does not only teach ASL but also deaf culture. I would definetly take him again. he is very helpful> Just be respectful and practice a lot.
Although I had different ASL teachers before taking Dan's class. I had problems understanding him & he was very patient with me. By 5th week, I learned so much than any of my ASL classes at AVC, CSUN, and COC. My signing skill has improved so much! I wish I had Dan as my teacher earlier. I am pursuing my study in Deaf Studies because of him.
He is such a humble and caring person. He wants everyone to get along and he really cares about his students. I had him for ASL 2 & Deaf Culture, he is clear and to the point, his humor & teaching method makes class time go by so fast. I highly recommend him to any Deaf Studies Major.
I had him for deaf culture really good teacher but can get sidetracked ALOT...
Dan is an AWSOME Deaf professor! He teaches his Deaf Studies classes with heart of GOLD! He is simply the BEST!
I always avoid taking a summer course because of the pace and heavier study load. Until then, I decided to take Dan's class. He made this class so much FUN to learn. He taught me a lot than most teachers I ever had. I am grateful to take Dan's class. His ASL storytelling is AMAZING! I look forward to take more classes with him!
The only teacher ever to give me a C in this college. He is nice and very funny, but he gets sidetracked a lot and tells us a story that I'm pretty sure nobody really cares. The C is partially my fault because I did not applied myself like I should've. I would take another teacher that would really pushes you to your best.
I loved this teacher very funny and makes you feel very comfartable signing to him he does not judge an dif u have made a mistake he wait til your done tkin and then explain what you signed wrong
Dan is actually the best and I do mean the BEST teacher I've ever had. He makes you want to learn about the Deaf Community, and get involved. He is very compassionate and sencitive to everyone needs. He is all about making you feel welcome and accepted.
Dan is a great teacher, he is a Deaf and it makes you work even harder because your forced to learn to communicate....don't get discouraged and just try your best
He is the best!!!!!! teacher ever he is funny, kind, caring and AWESOME. He thought me a lot about the deaf world and tells you to go out to the Deaf community and to get involved.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED he is the best i think by far and he is deaf so u pretty much have to learn. he doesnt like when people talk in his class becuz its rude which it is. you will learn soo much in little time its amazing take him!!!!!!!
I have been interested in Deaf Studies for a very long time. I found out that there was a Deaf instructor at AVC and my interest became a reality. I started my studies under Dan in 2011 and with very much luck will continue to study under him. He is by far the GREATEST TEACHER I have ever had. Thanks for your support, understanding, and instruction.
HE IS A GREAT TEACHER, HAS PASSION FOR IT, HE WANTS YOU TO LEARN THINKS OF YOU AS FAMILY DONT BE AFRIAD WILL CALL ON U BUT WILL HELP U WILL PLAY WITH U AND TELL STORYS HAD HIM2X IS VERY DEAF CULTURE WILL,SAYS THAT ENG HAS NOTING TO DO WITH ASL. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT! TALK IN HIS CLASS TAKES IT AS DISRESPECT GRRREAT TEACH
I love this teacher... I've had him for ASL 1,2,& 3 and if I could of had him for 4 I would have. He is the best teacher you could ever ask for especailly in learning Sign Language...He expects you to try your hardest. He will never turn you away if you need help. BRILLLIANT!!!!is all I can describe him as...
He is a good person however I left his class a bit angry. I know its our job as college students to study all of the material but when a professor gives you a study guide stating what exactly is going to be on the exam they should go through with it. He forgot to mention to study the history part of ASL so everyone in the class was really mad!
Awesome teacher! Demands the class participation necessary to learn a language, but he makes it FUN! Great sense of humor. Make sure you read the book though; he tells you to read it at the beginning of the semester and then doesn't mention it again until the material is on the final! Basically, if you are really there to learn, he will help you.
I Have learned so much from Mr. Humphrey over the last couple of semesters. Passionate about Deaf Culture and bring the Deaf and hearing together as they should be. Always ready to help and support, teaches in a way that you can learn easily. Do NOT talk in class and show the proper respect to him. Sad I have no more classes with him.
One of the best teachers at AVC!! If you participate in class, which is required, you should be able to follow along. Don't let the fact that he's Deaf scare you. It actually helps you learn the language better. Don't tslk in class it's rude and you will be scolded if he catches you, which he will. Buy both books required and use them! Great person
I have had three classes with Mr. Humphrey and I have to say that he has been the best teacher I've ever had. He is very passionate about Deaf Culture and he has patience with you if you don't understand a sign, he doesn't make fun of you. I will definitely take him again, remember to be respectful because he does get mad if you talk in class.
BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD. I throughly enjoyed his class. He's honestly the nicest professor and cares so much. I loved this class.
Really cool guy, very helpful and very funny. Great teacher. He's Deaf but don't let that scare you, it makes the learn process a lot easier. I really enjoyed learning the language, but didn't enjoy all the class sessions used to learn about Deaf culture. I just felt that it was a waste of an opportunity to learn the language.
Dan is an AWESOME teacher. Yes he is Deaf but more importantly, he is a born teacher. He knows HOW to teach. ASL is not easy, but so worth learning. Just put in the effort. I find it strange that the rater below me complained about learning Deaf culture. Wow, just wow! The two go hand in hand. You NEED to understand Deaf culture to truly learn ASL.
He is a very helpful teacher, and he is passionate about the language and culture which is awesome. But, he is a harsh grader.
Dan is an awesome teacher. He is very passionate and expects the very best of you. He is understanding when you don't get something right away and will patiently help you until you do. Read all profiles in the text, he does not cover most of them in class but they are on the final!
Dan is an FANTASTIC teacher. He is very passionate about teaching those who are unaware about the Deaf Culture. He helps you when mess up and even other students help. It is a small class but that is why it is so great because you can get more one on one time with him. I DEFINITELY recommend his class for beginning ASL students :)
I took Dan for DFST 101, 102, and I will be taking him again for DFST 201. He is a wonderful teacher and is always patient with his students. If you don't understand what he is saying, he will approach it several different ways until you understand it. He has a great sense of humor. The only thing he asks is for you to work hard and show respect.
Fantastic teacher all-round! Patient and very funny.
Class may be intimidating initially but Dan is a great teacher! he is very approachable, which is something I find important in a language class so I'm able to get the extra help needed. He makes lectures fun!
So funny! Very animated and passionate about his lectures. Pay attention, follow rules, and participate. He's such a sweet and funny guy he really helps you out!
I have taken Dan for ASL 1, ASL 3 and Deaf Culture. Dan is a phenomenal teacher. He is amazing and is such and inspiration. Dan is very passionate about what he does and sometimes his emotions get the best of him but it is only because he cares and he wants the best for his students. DO NOT talk/whisper behind his back. Stay off your phone.
I have taken Prof. Humphrey for ASL1, ASL2, ASL3 and Deaf Culture; he is a great professor. Really helpful and is very passionate about Deaf culture. I would suggest taking Deaf culture first and then start with ASL1. Don't miss any of his classes, pay attention and be respectful.
This is his first semester taking int201 and he sucks. We are nearly on 1.3 with 6 units in the book midterms are here we are learning nothing....
I have been taking INT 201 with Mr. Humphrey this semester. Without a doubt he is an amazing professor. I enjoyed his class, and I have learned a lot from him.
Great teacher! Funny and inspirational. Very passionate about sharing his culture, friendly, cares about his students. But I wouldn't recommend him to people who have had zero experience with ASL/Deaf culture. Sometimes uses signs he hasn't taught in class. Tests are weird, even if you study. If you take him, form a study group!
He taught us ASL but test us on the culture & He's very mean
He is the first Deaf person I've ever met, and he is proud to be Deaf. Learn a little bit of ASL online before you take his class, at the minimum, your name and the alphabet
He's a good teacher
Terrible teacher. I do not recommend him at all. Easy to receive an A as long as you participate , but overall attitude and teachings are horrible.
Dan is probably one of the best professors you will find at AVC. He is truly passionate about what he teaches and truly cares about his students. I went into ASL1 knowing nothing about American Sign Language and I truly learned a lot. The only criticism i have is that the final is all "cultural notes" and no sign, which isn't reviewed in class.
Prof. Humphrey has a penchant for interdisciplinary studies: taking any of his classes in good faith will result in a holistic encounter with the Deaf community. He's committed to his community, his students, and social justice without compromise. Engage attentively, ponder on the significance of the work, and grow to create a less audist world.
Awesome
I have taken ASL 101 through 202 With Dan as well as DFST 106 and what remained constant was the fact that overall as a student you are responsible for the grade you receive. Dan is easy going and try's to make sure everyone understands the material. He's more than willing to help if you put forth the effort.
the are a lot of essays
Dan is such an amazing teacher I've ever had at AVC. I've had Dan for DFST 101-202 and now 105. Such a caring teacher, respect him and his rules and you'll be fine. Always pay attention and create study groups!
I've taken several classes with Dan Humphrey. He is a great teacher. A really cool, respectable guy. Information sharing is valued in the Deaf community. If you're late or absent be sure to let him know why. Thankful for all I've learned thanks to Dan. :)
I have never met someone as disrespectful and degrading as a teacher before. He literally stopped a student mid presentation only to mock them and degrade how they were doing. In front of everyone. he has such a bad attitude & treats students poorly. how anyone can find him to be caring as a prof as he is constantly saying not my problem
Tread carefully. The class environment and professor is uneasy. There is an expectation and air of conformity and political correctness that is really unsettling. This class seems to attract the worst kind of people ironically. There is truth to both the bad and good reviews you read on here. Take this class with a grain of salt.
If you're serious about learning ASL, Dan's a great teacher! Takes the time to work one-on-one with students until everyone gets it. Hilarious and will tease you! Very few homework assignments, so the tests and papers REALLY count! He's willing to work with you and is dedicated to teaching! Just be dedicated to learn and you won't have a problem
He is an amazing teacher, i took ASL101 and ASL 102. I really loved his class. Just one thing that i don't like, he teaches 8 to 10 themes in one day. it was really stressful for me but i love to learn.
Dan is very proud of the lesson he teaches, he really wants you to learn and understand about the Deaf culture. He's an amazing professor and cares for his students. Attendance is important as he occasionally does in class assignments. I truly enjoyed being in his class.
Dan is truly amazing. He really cares about his students & pushes them to success. I took him for ASL 1-4 & have no regrets. The work is challenging & difficult but he helps in every way possible. 1 or 2 short, easy papers. 3 or 4 quizzes + midterm & final. If you go to class ready & willing to learn, open-minded and respectful, you'll do great.
He makes sure everyone is at the same level when learning ASL. There are times where he loses his patience but for the most part he is a very funny guy and can be easy to get along with. There are weekly video assignments and encourages you to read the textbook.
Do not take this class unless you want to indulge in a class surrounded by politics. It felt like a lot of people in class were trying to conform to his ideologies in order to "fit in." It was 3/4 about how horrible the white race is and 1/4 about Deaf studies. Expect to hear similar lectures daily.
if you're going to trust any review trust this one. i took many classes w him and he is such an amazing teacher. he's rlly cool. the work: easy if you put in the effort of practicing. thats it. just do the work and you're good. review on him: hes cool. he's so understanding. COMMUNICATE w him. CONNECT w him. and you'll get to know he's a good guy.
He's PASSIONATE about DFST/ASL if youre taking this class but dont really care to learn he is not the teacher for you. He wants his students to really learn, he will tell you to go home if he senses that you dont care. He's an amazing teacher, ive had him for a few classes already & ive enjoyed each class ive had with him 10/10 recommend!
I loved his lectures so much, and I learned something new abt deaf culture every day. I got a C, but it's because he doesn't give many assignments and grades just on unit tests. Honestly, his class was really easy. I was just lazy and didn't study as much as I should have. He gives you plenty of time to practice in class before test days.
Dan is okay. He has a bit of temper and regularly blows up during class. He is... passionate
I recommend this class for anyone who is serious about majoring in Deaf Studies. He is an amazing professor and gives you respect if you respect him. Fair to fair. I wish I could continue taking his class for life but I already graduated. Yall better not miss out taking DFST 105 with him j.h
Daniel Humphrey is the right professor to teach ASL 3. I would recommend yall take this class if you want to become a serious interpreter. He explains everything clearly and takes ASL seriously. If you want to grow your skills and understand ASL deeply, take this class. Yall will not regret it.
Yall should take DFST 204 with Daniel Humphrey and I bet yall will not regret it. This class is important to gain knowledge about the structure of American Sign Language. It is a big part of your future if you want to become an interpreter. He explains things clear and helps you understand.
