Dont listen to the other negative comments. The dude is a decent proffesor who loves what he teaches. The class was interesting and somewhat easy. He gives out a little to too much to read and he talks a lil fast but hes a nice dude.
Dr. Kamin, as knowledgeable as he is, is horribly unqualified to preside over an entire class of young adults. His class seems to be nothing more than a forum for himself to verbally ****. He views his class as being a hotbed for edgy political discussion, but it's nothing more than a monotonous snoozefest with a poorly planned curriculum.

He's a great professor, obviously a few angry students posted the above reviews. His class is so easy and tells you when he's going to give a quiz. I'm super conservative and although Kamin is liberal, he is professional and doesn't let his personal opinions dominate the class. One of the best professors DePaul has!
Great professor, doesn't let his personal political views influence class. He should teach more classes. Class pretty easy, tells you when he's going to quiz on assigned readings
Good teacher, the only balanced one I've had while at DePaul. Liberal but can barely tell. Class was pretty easy, just do the assignments, show up for handful of assigned quizzes and you're good. I failed all 4 quizzes, didn't read the books and still got an A.
If you can handle BS and dont like to think take this class. Liked to start with "Now class, I'm liberal but...(insert something offensive to some group or another)" This guy is full of it and is convinced that any reference to Israelis or Jews is anti-Semitism. He also ripped on particular students when they weren't there, and was intolerant.
I took his Soph Sem War on Terror class. It's nearly impossible to get less than a B+ or B in this class, he gives many opportunities to rack up points. 4 short 1 1/2 - 2 page journal entries, 3-5 simple quizzes, 1 easy group project, and 1 5-10 page paper (no final or midterm). Talks fast and is kind of a spaz but you will still learn a lot.
I think hes a pretty good teacher. He is liberal, but hes also smart with his politics ("make the best case for the other side & then cut that down.") The 4 journal entries are easy, quizzes are a bit harder but they're planned. Very interested in the class opinion. He is kind of a "spaz". I would recommend him bc hes cool, & the workload isn't bad
Kamin is one of the easiest professors I have had at DePaul so far. Barely needed the books and hardly ever did the reading, except I would recommend them for the paper. There is a 10 page midterm, but it's a research paper, so it is not hard. Also, the midterm was a little tricky but a huge curve brought up everyones grade. Really wants you to le
If you are at all conservative be prepared for an extremely liberal professor. I did not feel that his directions were clearly stated or that class discussion was well organized. To be fair however he is extremely passionate about the topic and you will learn something should you choose to take the course.
I am an extremely hard worker, yet it never pays off with him. He is rude, condescending and humiliates students in class. He is overly opinionated and DOES put his personal views in class. The class is supposed to be discussion, but he only likes to hear the sound of his own voice and interrupts anybody that speaks. I wouldn't recommend him at all
Prof. Kamin is very intelligent, but not the best with the lectures/lessons. Class would get off topic and would rely ONLY on readings. Tough grader, but cares about students.
Took a class on Israel-Palestinian conflict. He knows a lot about the conflict but has no clue on how to teach. He grades you 33% on participation but he never shuts up. Overall the man is a terrible teacher, when he does ask for your opinion he shoots it down and pokes as many holes in it as he can. I would advise against taking him.
He rambles on about the same junk every class, but none of it is relevant to the discussion. Interupts you. Acts like a 5 year old. Grades likes he is on drugs. Very stressful. I learned nothing. People say he's nice but after meeting with him outside class twice I disagree - he's pompous, irritating, RUDE, and cannot shut his mouth.
I just want to corroborate the comments below mine. This man is educated and well read on his subjects, but he has no idea how to shut up. If you raise your hand to speak, expect to only get 1 sentence out before he interrupts you and talks for another 15 minutes.
Like the prior comments he is well educated on the subject but talks WAY too much. He is also a piss-poor manager of time so if you have to ask him a 2 second question expect a 20 minute talk about it. Avoid him because he is simply annoying and will get on your nerves. He also has you buy a $30 course packet you never use.
Dear God does this man love the sound of his own voice. Like everyone else said, he knows his stuff, but he never shuts up or lets you speak your mind (and in a seminar class no less). Assignments were at least fairly challenging, as was grading, although I can't say I'm happy about spending $30 for a packet I looked at once
Daniel Kamin is a great Prof. He really cares about his students. Very passionate on the subject. Very fair.
He likes to talk, but he is passionate and is a good person and will meet with you or help you with anything you need.
Professor Kamin is an amazing professor. Passionate about the subject and really encourages you to think outside the box. By far one of the most stimulating and helpful professors at DePaul.
I took Professor Kamin for Winter 2013 and he is an amazing professor! His passion really makes you absorbed the information. Out of all of my classes, I have learned and retained the most knowledge from his class.
Kamin is a little bit spastic but overall a good guy. He picks favorites but as long as you participate in class, you'll be fine. He is very passionate about the subject and I learned a lot.
His quizzes are way too hard. You can do the readings, but it never helps. It does not matter how good you are at writing. Don't ever take him.
Nearly half of the grade is based on quizzes that are way too hard and impossible to do well on. He grades the quizzes too tough.
Professor Kamin is a good guy. The class easiness overall is middle range. You have to be very specific on the quizzes which are from the readings. There's a couple papers which one should use primary sources and cover both opinions regarding a topic and youll be fine. Participate in class or even nod your head when hes talking.. it goes along way.
No matter how well you participate, things will never go well. Quizzes are almost impossible to do well on,even if you study as hard as you're supposed to.
Professor Kamin means well but he is not a good teacher. He is very spastic and spends most of the class flailing around. He is extremely biased and hates mocks opposing views. He is also terribly unorganized and falls way behind in his syllabus. Maybe thats because he spends the first 30m mins of every class complaining about how behind we are
Does not understand how to give a cohesive lecture that goes through the history of Israel and Palestine and his voice will drive you insane by the end of class. He assigns way to many readings and writings for a Focal Point. Midterm he give you an id list that covers from Jesus to 1948, ridiculous. I love M.E studies but this guy cant teach. :(
Professor Kamin's lectures can be long but they're interesting. He gives you a detailed history of the issues, really tests your knowledge but he's fair. He'll play devil's advocate and argue with you, but that's only to help you hone your argument. Go to class, take notes, read your notes before exams and you'll be fine.
Some of the material may have been difficult to grasp but he's always there either via email or during office hours to help. He sparks a lot of interest in the subject and makes you want to learn more about what he's talking about. Gives good feedback on papers, if you can read his handwriting. Take advantage of office hours.
The readings were interesting but not always necessary to do unless you miss class. He lectures on the readings, gives detailed notes and makes you write 2 papers during the quarter. Exams are based on notes so take good notes. Good professor. Interesting subject.
Seminar-style class, mix of lectures and sometimes brief discussions. Tests are straight forward. Just take notes and pay attention. Fair grader, gives a lot of feedback and asks a lot of questions. Easiest INT class in the entire department.
Readings are easy and straightforward. Loves primary sources and makes you come to your own conclusions and doesn't force them on you like other DePaul professors. You'll get a lot out of this class if you take it seriously. Group projects are a breeze.
Daniel Kamin is a very knowledgable professor with a clear instrinsic motivation to go above and beyond to help his students. He will happily take many hours outside of the classroom to talk with you and maintain complete transparency when discussing issues that may arrise between he and his students. Recommended for those who are willing to work.
On the quizzes, you need to specific, but that won't help either. Instead, he takes off points even for correct answers simply for the way you write your answer even if you have the best answer for a question. Even when he says you did well on an assignment or project, the grade may not really be good as he does not tell you what grade it is.
Readings might be straightforward, but they don't help on quizzes. He grades quizzes to tough that even wording of answers matters. He makes participation an essential component to passing, but he talks so much in lecture that it is hard to participate.
The quizzes are composed of questions that are technically random. Readings and lectures do not help at all with the quizzes at all. Even if he says you did good on an assignment, it does not mean you really did well. That is because he does not tell you what your real grade is those cases.
His lectures are long and boring. Pushes his democratic views on students in lectures and if you miss one class your grade basically drops. I would never take again.
The readings are essential to do, but they don't help with the quizzes at all. The quizzes aren't actually graded based on how correct your real answer was; it was rather on how you worded your answer. Avoid him. Studying hard and doing the readings make absolutely no difference.
During this class, we took field trips everyday, which was fun. The first and last day he didn't stop talking for 3 hour of class. You have to go to classes, but if you do the readings and actually try on the assignments, you'll do more than fine.
Participation is vital, but it is almost impossible to participate because he talks so much and takes up as much time to eliminate any chance of participation. He even grades the quizzes based on how you worded the answers, not really on how correct the answers were. Lectures and reading don't help at all.
Great guy. Learned a whole lot about Israel, Judaism, and Zionism from him. Everyone complains he is talking too much, but I really enjoyed his teaching style and found him funny yet informative. His class was probably the funnest one I've ever taken at De Paul. The final was almost like a party with all the snacks and drinks he brought.
The quizzes are so hard that the readings and the lectures do not help at all with those. He does not even really grade you how correct your answers are. Participation is required for this class, but he makes it so difficult because he talks so much in discussions.
Awesome guy, really knows what he's talking about as far as Middle East conflicts, the War in Iraq, ISIS and other topics. The only problem with his teaching style is how fast he talks... Have you ever seen the TV show Viva La Bam? Remember the Uncle Don VIto? Yeah...
On his quizzes, he really grades based on how you said or worded your answers, not how correct they are, so studying from lectures and readings don't help. He also talks so much that participation is difficult even though he makes it a very big component of your grade. Even when he says you did good, he does not tell you what your real grade is.
Lots of work in this class. Kamin is very knowledgable and truly cares that you understand what we are learning and doing. Will go out of way for office hours for his students. This class was very time consuming with reading and writing. Final 12 page paper. Good class just a little scattered
Mr. Kamin is a really nice guy and cares a lot about his students. His teaching style is different, that's for sure, where he usually just talks. You'll be doing a short paper most weeks. Come into his office hours and he will give you feedback. I hear many complaints on here but he's worth a try, just be ready to put in work or he will not be fond
Readings and lectures do not help with the quizzes. He does not lecture adequately to make sure that students understand the material, so studying does not make the difference here. Even if he says you did good on an assignment, he does not tell you what your grade really is.
He is the best professor and is very cool, very knowledgeable, and inspirational because he cares a lot about what he teaches and I highly recommend him for any class you are lucky to take him with!!
Professor Kamin really knows what he is talking about. He has great lectures that brings a lot of informative material for all future assignments. He makes time to be available outside of class, and he really goes above and beyond to help the class understand. Highly recommended.
The quizzes are absolutely difficult and are not graded on how correct the answers really are. Lectures and readings do not help. Participation is required, but he talks so much that participation is very difficult.
Taking notes and doing the readings are required, but they are useless when it comes to the quizzes, which are not graded based on how correct the answers actually are. Not saying the answer the way he wants you to say it is the easiest way to fail the quizzes.
Kamin is one of my absolute favorite teachers. You'll REALLY understand the topics he teaches, and enjoy knowing about them. He knows how to make you care about a topic. He has a tendency to ramble on in class, and it's difficult to really get a word in, but you get used to his style. He's fast-paced, loves the work. Tough, but worth sticking out.
Like many others said, his quizzes are not really graded fairly based on correctness. Doing the readings and reviewing notes do not help. He requires participation but talks too much for students to participate.
He is very hare to understand and I don't understand the point to his class.
Solid teacher
I really enjoyed having Kamin BUT he's not for everyone. Extremely smart guy, you will be listening to long lectures with no clear structure for the entire class. Quizzes and papers have no "true" criteria to them but you'll do well if you participate, go in to see him for help. Don't skip class, doesnt really use D2L. Not an easy A by any means
This class was not a seminar. He lectures the whole time and gets off topic easily. If you go to class and put a little effort into your assignments, you'll pass, but if you have the option, pick another sophomore seminar.
He does not stay on topic very often in lecture. Readings and lectures do not help with the quizzes because quizzes are not really graded fairly on correctness. Participation is required, but that is difficult as he talks too much.
I wish Professor K would include everyone as I think he doesn't value diversity enough even though he tries, and seems closed off. I think Professor Kamin struggles. I think that Professor Daniel is kind-hearted but has low self-esteem. I think he should teach more classes, DePaul won't let him so I think he should teach also at another place too.
Professor K does require participation, but he does not respect many of the students' views and talks too much himself during the discussions. He also does not fairly grade quizzes; he only grades them on the way the answers were written and not the correctness. The readings and the lectures do not help with studying for these quizzes.
He's a fantastic professor and I really enjoyed his class. He makes you critically think about current real world issues. I didn't always agree with his politics, but he comes from a place of challenging your views and that is what a great professor does!
Professor Kamin knows a lot about this topic and sometimes forgets students don't, so do (most of) the reading to understand his lectures. He goes off on a lot of tangents in class and there isn't much structure. He's a good guy and I learned a lot about this topic. If you show interest/do the work how he wants it, you'll do well.
This guy just repeats himself over and over for an hour and a half and gets defensive about his beliefs. DO NOT TAKE A KAMIN CLASS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO. Most boring class of all time.
He's a knowledgeable professor and good person who just can't organize the class sometimes. Part of this relates to students not doing the readings/students not being prepared. However, if you want to learn about an interesting topic, I would suggest the class.
He does not bother to organize the class. He requires participation, but he talks so much that it is hard to participate. He disrespects views that are any different from his, and he even grades the quizzes based on wording and not correctness. That is why the lectures and readings do not help.
I took this class 2 years ago and it was still the worst experience I've had with any professor. He issues out quizzes and even if you get the right answer, he will deduct major points if you worded it incorrectly. He also picks favorites, and uses the fact that he went to Darthmouth as a way to feel superior and that he is ALWAYS in the right.
Professor Kamin is very passionate about the subject matter and puts in effort in planning the classes and taking the class to the best places. Might seem a little boring at times because he goes on about the same things but he's very caring and knowledgable.
Talks way too much for you to enjoy the content being taught in class. Also disrespectful to other people's views.
Participation is required, but gives little to no opportunity for non-political science majors to talk. He uses political terminology that he expects everyone to know even if you're not politically savvy. He downplays other views that are not his own and grades his quizzes not if there right or wrong, but for how you word the answers.
The worst teacher, I have ever had. Made us buy a book, and only used it for one chapter. He romanizes his views and is very disrespectful of other peoples views. He would grade strictly on his view on you, and will mark you down for no reason. I attended all class, and worked the hardest and I still didnt get an A. Dont take this class.
Cant understand the dude when he talks. He speaks so fast you will be lost majority of the time. Miss class even though its not mandatory you will do poorly. Everyone who goes to answer a question he speaks over them and then tell you to talk and then he continues. Acts like this is the most important class you are taking.
Kamin's lectures have no structure, as he's often jumping from topic to topic with no consideration of how much info students are retaining. There's not much room for discussion as he interrupts students extremely frequently to nitpick their wording, dismiss their beliefs and push his beliefs as facts. Extremely disappointing.
Kamin talks 3 hours straight. He often cuts off students when they try to speak. He has no organization to his madness whatsoever. Although he is extremely intelligent, he has no sense of his students. He does not stick to his original class plans.
Absolutely hated this prof. The worst class I've ever taken at DePaul and would absolutely not recommend it. Gets annoyed and mad at the class for not participating when he literally talks so much and over students who actually try to participate. He always enforces his opinions over all other students. Even when the students are making valid point
For an explore class, this was possibly one of the worst decisions of my college career. Jewish or not, i would not reccomend taking this class. I have received more papers in this class than i have in my core classes. If you get selected in this class> DROP IT, SAVE YOURSELF! The only class requiring you to buy 50$ worth of textbooks for ONE PAPER
Lectures feel unorganized & you may get cut off talking. It was annoying to deal with as a student, but you'll learn to get over yourself. Kamin is the only professor/person I know who teaches this topic using almost only primary sources! He's incredibly knowledgeable. To get the most out, join the class prepared to LEARN and not just push back!
Although participation is required, he cuts off students when they talk and mocks any view no matter how similar it would be to his. He gets mad at the class for not talking when he is the one talking so much that he does everything he can to prevent a discussion from really happening.
Listen, I'm coming back a year later and I'm dedicated to leaving him terrible reviews. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. This guy literally made me leave DePaul because he's such a HORRIBLE AND SCUMMY TEACHER. Talks all over you and makes you buy books you'll use once. Got a different opinion than him? that's a whole other issue. DROP HIM
Dr Abel justus can help get ex back fast. So, I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and i did it then he did a (Love spell) for me. 72 hours later, my husband really called me and told me that he miss me and the kids so much, So Amazing!!
The class content is very interesting and if you care about learning about where the United States went wrong in modern times you just might tolerate this class. However the work was just not worth it. There are definitely better lsp classes you can take. You have to do a 30+ min presentation and a final paper on the same damn topic. Not worth it.
I honestly lost years of my life from taking his course. I read these reviews before taking him and thought I could handle it but I have ptsd. Run
Steamrolls the conversation. Talks so fast he rarely finishes his own thoughts. Has not updated the class in the 20 years he brags about teaching it. Has blatant disregard for students with other classes or jobs (weird as this isn't an honors class). Very self centered. Gives horrible instructions for final. Not easy to reach. His class comes first
Absolute terrible professor. Depaul should fire him for how many students i know tranaferred because of him. Makes you buy his friends expensive books to read one chapter. Tough grader for a useless class.
Professor Kamin talks over students and is rude.
Though Professor Kamin means well, he crosses boundaries at times and his class can genuinely feel discouraging. Rambles, interrupts, is not good with email, and his personal political opinions steamroll the meaning of what he teaches. The coursework is so interesting to me but he made the class feel so uncomfortable, and not in a progressive way.
Professor Kamin is extremely knowledgeable and is very passionate about what he teaches. I found myself captivated by the topics, although some were mundane, solely because of how much he knew and how much he cared about the subjects. He is biased towards his political party, but his points are not unreasonable or illogical. Overall very nice guy.
He does not respect what students have to say during discussions (even when they agree with him). He grades quizzes rather based off of what he thinks of you and not correctness of the answers. He even talks over people during discussions frequently, making it very hard to participate. He even makes no effort to improve his teaching or course.
I am a veteran and felt attacked because of it. The liberal ideology spews from his interruptive mouth. He won't let you get your point across once he finds it does not align with his own ideas, this is not the quality of a good professor, simple. This class has no right to be as difficult as it was. If you see me, don't talk to me...
Professor Kamin is so funny and makes the topic really interesting. Lots of good conversations in class, love the discussion format he uses. If you don't do the work and have something intelligent to say, you will fall behind, but he assigns maybe 10 pages of reading at a time. Great class!!!
He rather crosses the boundary lines so much that he would even mock anyone's views, even when they agree with his. He would even grade you based on how he personally feels about you rather than how factually correct you are. Perhaps he sets up discussions for each class for the purpose of talking over everyone he wishes to.
I wanted to take this class to build a better understanding of the Jewish experience in Chicago. He is a professor that rambles about his own discussion topics and it feels impossible to say anything, especially if he doesn't agree with you.I would not recommend his class unless you are ok with long assignments and biased and interrupted discussion.
Don't ever take this class. If you were placed in it, drop it at all costs. Trust me. You can send my thank you card in the mail.
DON'T even think about this professor (should be fired) Reminds me of a very two faced person, almost like having a mask on. Purpose of class is discussions and will preach it, but essentially doesn't allow it with the amount of talking, interruption, forgets what he was even gonna say. Share his passion rather than teach.
he likes to call on people to answer questions, but then he cuts them off and usually tells them they're wrong. He makes you feel bad when you don't answer questions correctly. He overshares his personal life a lot, and generally makes everyone feel uncomfortable. Don't take this class unless you have to‼️
Although I ended with an A, it was nowhere near easy. I think that he grades far too harshly and doesn't actually spend a ton of time analyzing papers. Almost all of the class was him lecturing, but making it sort of impossible to participate even though he said that is what he wanted.
Tends to interrupt students after calling on them to answer questions. He would ask prompting questions but then ridicule for either minute factual errors (like dates) or sometimes seemingly just because of a difference of opinion. Also no visuals, slides, etc. just readings and long tangental lectures. Not a bad guy but not a great teacher.
the fact that i put 'lecture heavy' on a seminar class should say enough... ok, i will give him some leniency. as long as you participate, the class isn't the worst. a lot of reading, lot of rambling, and papers due regularly, but he's SUPER passionate which i enjoyed. he's also very passive aggressive and it will get irritating....
Coming back to write this almost two years later because, despite my quarrels with his off-putting teaching style, he knows what he is talking about when it comes to this course's content, and at the end of the day, that's what matters in a professor. I am shocked to read people talk about his "bias", the man gives both sides. Go to office hours!
He grades rather based on what he thinks of you, not the correctness of answers. In discussions where participation is required, he even calls on people to answer questions he asks only to cut them off and say that they are wrong regardless of whether their views align with his or not.
Explore Jewish Chicago was probably the hardest class there was. If you're not Jewish and got put in the class, do yourself a favor and drop it. This guy is bias, grades based on that bias, and talks over you
AVOID!! He asserts his views at any chance he gets and disadvantages others who present different ideas. He has failed to show up to 4 classes (20% of the course) completely unannounced; he emailed a student to tell them to play a movie for the class on their personal HBO account each time. Passionate, but lacks much needed structure & organization
Not good at all The course itself teaches very little about the war on terror, only really focuses on the writings of two white guys with horrible opinions. He is completely biased will not let you give your own opinion. Missed multiple classes without warning. Means well but is just a horrible professor. take a different seminar requirement please
