Not a bad professor, but jumps around alot making the lecture hard to follow. He is not always clears. The good thing is that his midterms are very similar to the practice midterms.
He's a pretty good teacher compared to other teachers. His practice midterms are much similar to the real midterms, so definitely do them. His lectures are boring, but they are still better than reading the book. Definitely recommend!
Pretty Good teacher! Enjoyed Lecture. Everything came from his notes, so the book was pointless. Tests were very fair and not hard if you understood the practice tests and went to the reviews. I thought he was hilarious at times. Great Analogies!

Kliebenstein does not organize his notes before presenting it in class. It is not a difficult class, but his apathy to the material and monotoned delivery make it hard to endure. Tests are similar to practice, but grading is vague at best.
Pretty boring lectures, not the clearest, but he is much easier than the other professors. He doesn't seem to excited about teaching the class, and not the most helpful. But if you have to take this class, he is the guy!
Very helpful. A bit cluttered but cares.
Notes are not organized. it seems as if he is trying to make the class more difficult than it already is by giving hard exams. he never discuss how to solve work-problems in lecture, but they appear in the exams. over 61 percent of the class failed the course. he is a friendly person though
If you have a choice take this prof!! Notes are unorganized so use text to clarify. Both midterms were very similar to the practice midterms. The final was NOT similar to practice final, much harder then I anticipated. Otherwise easy. Homework problems not too helpful.
Go to Office Hours. He explains the subject matter very well. Also, take advantage of the TA's in office hours. However, discussion was somewhat a waste of time. Only about 2 or 3 problems from the practice exams showed on on the actual exam. Make sure you study the diagrams he gives in class.
yeah he isnt well organized when writing things on the board. midterms werent too bad but the final took some thinking. he is a funny guy
Co-taught the course with Prof. Inoue. Prof. Kliebenstein is very helpful. Discusses current, relevant research techniques and discoveries in class. Dry humor without being sarcastic or mean makes lectures a lot of fun and informative. Great to talk to after lecture if you have questions.
wayyy too boring! dreaded going to lecture, only good thing was his tests were similar to the practice one's online...really doesnt know how to explain things, just puts up an outline on the board, and expects you to know what it is, hard to connect things together with lecture and book. lectures not helpful at all! i feel like i didnt learn much
I really liked how he wrote down everything on the board. notes get a little messy and confusing sometimes but overall it was a cool class. practice mt were very similar to the actual tests. hw was useless.
He wrote everything on the chalkboard, which is good for notetakers and all test material is straight out of lecture (he tells you that you don't even have to read it.) Great at explaining and great flow from topic to topic. Makes complex material simple :) Highly recommended!
Notes were hard to understand because he does not explain what he is writing or talking about. Some questions on the tests were confusing, but overall the tests were fair. Lectures were boring, talks in monotone.
Lecture can sometimes feel scattered. I did finally understand all of mendel after this though :) Practice tests are v similar to MT and they help reinforce material. Assigned homework was also helpful.
Professor is not really the most interesting professor to listen to during lecture, but he really cares about his students. His lecture is more discussion based as he asks the class a lot of questions during lecture. His practice exams are VERY similar to the actual exams, and some questions show up verbatim. I would recommend!
One of the worst professors I've had. Notes are incomprehensible and lectures are SLOW. No curve.
His lectures weren't as helpful as I expected them to be. I'm glad I went to discussions to have the TA clarify a lot of the material (and I wasn't even enrolled in a disc. section!). His reviews didn't help much either, you have to come with specific questions or else the material will be confusing at the end. NO CURVES.
He's a nice guy and puts things in pretty simple terms. Practice midterms are a mirror of the Real midterms. Very easy to pass this class, however, to get an A you need perfect scores on the midterms. He does curve but the class generally does so well that the curve is tiny. You should go to class; lectures don't exactly match the book.
Not a very clear professor. However, the exams are almost identical to the practice exams. The final was a bit harder though.
good prof. chalkboard user. podcasts lectures. practice is same as the exam. i just listened to the podcasts and went over lecture notes to study and got an A. He puts things in simple terms but says more that he writes on the board so go to class. he speaks in a monotonous tone but just take notes and review before exams and youll do fine.
Great class. All test material comes straight from the notes, and the practice tests are the best practice for the exams. Go to class, do the practice exams and you'll be fine.
good professor but doesnt know how to structure his lectures to be more clear. his practice exams are the same as his real exams, but people who dont know this fact can know the material very well and still do bad on the midterm because they didnt see the practice exam and dont understand the often vaguely phrased questions or weird formats
A pretty chill guy. Attend lecture as he only writes on the board and talks about the concepts. If you have any questions about genetics problems, go to office hours. Midterms were fair and very similar to practice exams! Watchout for vocab-they can be tricky. Overall, a cool professor
He isn't the best lecturer. At times lecture is boring and disorganized, but he likes to make concepts simple. His exams are very similar to the practice ones. I think this class is an easy B if you just show up to lecture and do the practice exams. Getting an A is a little harder because he switches his test questions up.
I thought he was a GREAT lecturer compared to the other boring BIS101 professors. He likes to be funny and uses random, funny metaphors to explain things which actually helped me understand! He does keep things simple and tests are similar to practice ones. Final is basically just all the big concepts from midterms. TAKE HIM FOR BIS101!!!
With Dan, the best way to succeed is by doing all the practice exams then studying material from lecture not present in the practice exams. Don't memorize the answers to the practice questions, but understand them bc Dan can switch the questions up, which are easy points to lose. Read test questions CAREFULLY. Textbook/discussions were useless.
Practice exams and T.A. office hours. Lecture can be unclear, but material is not too difficult. No surprises on exams.
One of the BEST PROFESSORS I had at UC Davis, his lectures will put you to sleep since they are 2 hours long. But as long as you pay attention you don't need to read the book. DO the practice exams, actual tests are similar but wording and numbers will be switched around. Very helpful in office hours, and this is off topic but he has GREAT hair!
Kliebenstein is a really good professor and his class is fairly easy as long as you take good notes and do the practice exams. His exams are EXACTLY like the practice tests, with some numbers changed. He gives a 10 minute break about halfway through lecture which is nice since it's a 2 hr class. I would definitely reccomend him for BIS 101!
So helpful and nice! Exams are JUST like the practice ones he posts, but he switches it up, so just know the material really well!
Very good prof. I really enjoyed his class. His exams were just like the practices but it was still easy to make mistakes, so make sure you understand the material and dont memorize the answers from the practices. READ THE EXAM QUESTIONS CAREFULLY. He could ne tricky soemtimes. Over all, he is a funny guy, and was willing to help all the time.
He suddenly got a LOT harder, and even though he's helpful, his class is extremely hard...easy B, but VERY HARD A!
He is bored by teaching undergrads and that shows. He is overly vague and his exam questions are tricky puzzles that bear little relevance to the understanding of the material. Notes are given on the blackboard and they are VERY SLOPPY and he does not take time or care to ensure that his class is understanding his lecture materials. Stay Away!!!
He does us a lot of questions from the old exam; however, his multiple choice test are HARD! He will tell you at there may be 1,2,3,4 or 5 answers for each question and that applies to the entire exam. Dont expect an easy A or B. Dont take him.
Def harder than b4 probably because his tests went from free response to MC and have multiple answers. Word matching are really tricky.3 MT's and a final.Class was only 400 pts. But the MC are so HARD! He has some partial credit, but if you select too many choices, the whole thing is wrong. Boring lectures, but you have to attend cuz he has no ppt.
How to succeed: Read his wiki, go to office hours, understand every definition possible of all the vocal words. Go to office hours.Read the book to understand the material. Attend class because on the exam he uses his own notation which he shows in class. He only posts podcasts no notes. Practice taking tests with multiple answers. Pray. A lot.
His tests are really tricky. His multiple choice questions are hard.
Dear potential bis 101 student, don't let the reviews below scare you. What they say about how he tests is true. They are tough but they're not impossible. I'm not trying to gloat, but I studied a few hrs the night before for his exams (and final) and each time I somehow did over a standard dev. above average. If I can pull this off you can too.
Funny guy, knows his stuff, but holy fruits he loves to ramble. You're better off NOT going to class. He mumbles thru some parts of problem-ish examples, but in the end you'll just end up more confused than you were at the beginning of class. Study the practice tests and go to discussions. Pretty sure I'll end with an A just by doing that.
Really solid professor. He answers students' questions very thoroughly, and his humor makes the two hour lecture a little bit easier to sit through. If you do the homework and study the practice exams, you will be well prepared for the tests. One warning: this class is a really easy B, but you do have to work hard for the A.
I took this class during FALL 2008. BEST CLASS AT UC Davis. I got A+. I studied 2 hours per day. Especially went to office hours TA. Teacher assitant really helps. If you are willing to go out your way and get help, its great. This class required about 2 to 3 hours per day study. Practice exams, similar questions. SUPER EASY CLASS!!
Although he is not the best lecturer, his tests are fair because they are almost EXACTLY like the practice exams, just with a twist on some questions. Multi-answer questions have partial credit. Did not read the textbook and did not find the hw particularly helpful. Just took good notes and did the practice exams, had Nicole as my TA. Got an A!
He is helpful! Ask a lot of questions. Find the right TA. TA gave out answers for exams. The examss are just like the practice exams. His exams are multiple answer. Kinda throws you off. Read the book! Study hard, and you should be okay.
Professor Kliebenstein was a rather good professor. His monotone voice doesnt help with staying awake, but his dry humor can. What he has as practice midterms, is exactly what you expect on the real test. OH and TAs are very helpful. They do collect homework as part of the grade, but doing it helps a lot. Ended up with a B, so happy with the result
Easy class highly recommend. Literally stopped showing up to class after midterm 1. Just memorized his notes and practice tests and got an A. DO NOT buy a textbook. you are wasting your money. He is probably the laziest professor at Davis. Nevertheless, really easy class if you play it right. Plus, he looks the dentist from the hangover- but fatter
He doesn't know how to teach at all. Lectures are extremely jumbled and confusing. His TA does post class notes online, so you don't have to take notes. He makes a lot of mistakes on the exams so you have to literally yell at him to get points back. Exams are tricky and you feel like you fail each time you finish an exam. IDK how i got an A?
His lectures are very boring, but he's pretty funny. The tests are similar to the practice tests-you should understand WHY the answers are and not memorize them cuz he changes up questions often to trick you. Overall it was a chill class. use textbook only for reference. discussion sections are useless and so is the homework. Got an A pretty easy
Did not do examples related to the test, exams are so close to the practice exam, hw are not useful for the test, lectures are mandatory, overall it was an interesting and an easy class
Dr Kliebenstein is not a particularly compelling professor either way, good or bad. His tests are basically identical to the practice tests, but I had more trouble understanding his thought process and underlying logic than I ever did with the material. I feel like we should have covered more material, as he cut out a topic because he went to slow.
Tests were very hard but easier if you did the practice tests. The lectures were complicated but it helped to go over notes, if you wrote them. Which you really should
This guy was an awful professor. I had to transcribe all his podcasts. Not worth the effort, but I pulled off an A which seemed unfair as I was ranked 4/516. I highly doubt the guy below me got an A+ seeing I did pretty well and still got messed over. Also, he curved UP. (Who does that?)
Only has 2 exams & a final which are 100% off his notes so don't waste your money on a textbook. Notes are posted online so you don't have to go to class but should so you understand notes (lots of diagrams). Exams are exactly like practice exams so if you got those down you're ready for the exam. He is a little boring but I still recommend him.
Get ready to read because Dan is the most boring professor you will ever have in the entirety of your time here at UCD
With most multiple choice exams you have a 20-25% probability of getting the right answer. Kliebenstein's exams are more like 0.000025%. Multiple choice.... more like infinite choice.
Found myself very lost in every lecture. He goes through the material extremely fast because its so simple to him and doesn't know how to dumb it down to student's level. NEED THE TEXTBOOK to make sense of his notes and actually understand the material. Tests are VERY TRICKY, he lectures on a chalkboard so get ready to squint and be confused.
Avoid at all costs! His exams are worded in a way where they are meant to trick you, and lectures are almost completely pointless.
Avoid if at all possible. Exams are multiple answer, multiple choice. Class is podcasted, but lectures are written on the chalkboard and difficult to see and follow. Klieb is scattered, and his notes are difficult to transfer to exam questions. Not easy to be successful in this class. Save yourself the nightmare and take a different professor.
Avoid this professor at all costs, lectures are completely irrelevant, exams are multiple answer multiple choice, the problem solving on the exams are not covered in class so you must decipher it yourself if youre lucky. Terrible curve, it was basically non existent, and hes freely admitted he tries to trick students on exams, g thanks. RUN AWAY!
You're given 3 copies of previous years mid terms, and finals. How hard can this be? The hands on portions of the tests are easy because you get 3 practices. The conceptual Q&A portions of the test can be overwhelming, so you study the lectures, memorize facts, and you practice the way he words things. The tests can be wordy, but its for specifics
I am so surprised at all the terrible reviews. Bis 101 is not an easy class by any means, but Klieb is EXTREMELY consistent with his method of testing. He gives us old exams with nearly identical questions! Go to class and do the practice midterms. Go to OH for help with the problem solving parts. Don't procrastinate. I would take him again.
Please take another professor. Yes, he does give you past exams but because his tests are designed to trick you (rather than measuring how well you understand the material and not to mention them being multiple-answer), you're better off taking another professor who will not try to trick you when it comes to exam time.
Lots of controversy on Kliebenstein. How to succeed in his class : take good notes, listen to podcasts to fill in gaps, go to discussion and have TA review concepts, do ALL provided practice exams, re-read notes frequently, and you'll pass. Got an A without even going to a single office hour. Be consistent in your study habits and you'll be fine.
Went to class and did not podcast for first exam and got a C. Decided to podcast for the remaining and ended up with an A in the class. Never touched the textbook. If youre worried about grades, class is curved so grading doesn't depend on how hard the exams are but how you compare to your peers. The average is score on exams will be given a B-

His exams are hard for sure, but if you know how to do all 3 practice exams he posts online your def prepared for the exam. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND ASK TA FOR HELP AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. He is super intimidating but if you go to office hours he's actually really nice- he's also handsome and has nice hair lol
Really messy lecturer. Jumps all over the place and makes it hard to follow. Review constantly to keep up with the gaps. Very consistent with his tests though, so do the practice exams, and be careful with the wordings.
His lectures and homework can't prepare you for the exams but doing the 3 provided past exams does help. The TAs were of a lot of help also go to tutoring. He is a funny guy though. He is a controversial teacher, there might be people who would like him but he was not my type of teacher. I didn't really learn much in his class.
Old tests are helpful but I still had to attend TA office hours and READ the textbook in order to get an idea of what was going on. Tests are similar but he likes to trick students so be careful with the actual tests (two hours for 50 problems). I found that I was studying how to get around his tests rather than actually learning about genetics.
In order to do well on his tests, you'll find yourself listening for a very specific thing he said in the lecture on his podcasts and doing the practice exams repeatedly rather than actually learning genetics. He's also very inconsistent with his exam answers; sometimes what he says in lecture will be a wrong answer on the test. Avoid this teacher.
While I admit he is inconsistent with exam answers and it can be frustrating and his lectures are hard to follow. however, if you learn to solve the questions on the practice exams they basically identical to the actual exam so I dont get why people are complaining so much.
Very unorganized lectures. He posted lecture notes from students from the the last 3 yrs & the notes are often contradictory. He does post exams from the last 3 yrs - these are the key to success, study them inside & out. He asks SIMILAR questions (same answers, different questions) on exams, be sure to read all questions carefully.
Very monotone voice that you will dread hearing for 2 hours. He tries to insert a joke sometimes, but half the class still ends up falling asleep. Writes notes on the chalkboard so you will have trouble seeing if you sit in the back. Tests are almost the same as previous years, however the word choices will guarantee that you mess up.
I got an A- in the class but i still felt like i don't know any genetics which is unfortunate. He didn't seem like he cared at all and instead of spending time on actually learning the material, i felt like i was just learning to take his tests. He changes the wording slightly and it changes everything.
This class was a pain. Most things discussed in lecture have nothing to do with the exam as he often went on tangents and strange sense of jokes. The previous exams are the best model for the midterms as they are essentially the same with different wording/answers. Notes and podcasts are online. Grade based on 2 midterms and the final.
Has some alright jokes. But has a condescending attitude in lecture that makes you feel stupid. He also has a tendency to oversimplify huge topics and concepts in just a few sentences. The Lectures are so irrelevant, literally the only reason I passed the class was because he posts past tests.
I can see why people are annoyed by the wording on his tests, but I feel like his questions are there to see if you understand the material more than they're there just to trick you. He does go on tangents, but I found it interesting to learn about how the stuff we're learning about applies outside of class. Would recommend.
Skims over topics that require work to figure out the answers, i would appreciate more examples in class. However, he posts many student notes, tests from previous years, and the podcasts online. Whole grade is based on two midterms and final, but they are doable. His jokes are not for people who get easily offended, but definitely funny.
Overall, I really enjoyed his class. His lectures are entertaining. He interacts with students a lot. He can be sarcastic sometimes, but he is really approachable, so don't get frustrated if you need help - just ask him. He is also VERY GOOD with emails. I did not really like his tests (I was never satisfied with them) , but they are doable.
Overall, a good professor. Class does not use a book (although one is available/recommended) and attendance is not mandatory. He posts various other students' lecture notes. Course is decided by two 120 point midterms and a 160 point final, all multiple choice. Would take again although I felt I learned more on taking his tests than anything else.
There is no homework, just two midterms and a final exam. The tests are difficult, but if you do the practice tests that he posts online you'll be fine. Seriously, they are pretty much identical to the tests that he actually gives. The only material he tests on is stuff that he goes over in class, so you can ignore the textbook.
This was one of my favorite classes at Davis. The practice exams were very similar to the exams. If you understand the practice exams you will be fine.
Lectures were not reflective of the depth of information that is required for the exams. You will spend all your time studying practice exams, which this year were pretty different from the actual exam, and will barely learn any genetics. The other professors are much better organized and straightforward.
Its hard to keep up in lecture due to his monotone voice. Exams consist of all multiple choice, with multiple correct answers. Practice exams are provided but he often tests you on things we never learned. I felt like I studied how to take his exams rather than actually learning genetics. Take another professor if you can!
He is a decent professor, but the exams don't reflect lecture at all. The practice exams are basically identical to the actual exam so you have to just memorize all of the patterns of those. The second exam was WHACK however and made me end up with a B+ in the class even though I got a high A on MT1 and the final. Overall just a meh class
Took him last Fall 18. Idk how other students approached his material/lecture style, but honestly, Prof Dan prepared me greatly in understanding the processes/mechanisms in genetics & sequencing. Study what he mainly lectures in class, watch additional animations, THEN review the sample exams. Wanna learn the material srsly? Take him.
Grading is based on 2 midterms and a final which follow the many practice tests posted. If you have a solid understanding of concepts/ questions on the practice tests, you will do well. He asks for questions during lectures and is accessible outside of class, so you can easily clarify any confusion. Exams are based on lectures so take notes.
Terrible lecturer. I feel I learned how to do his test questions rather than understand the material. To get an A, memorize his practice tests and go to the TA's review sessions. In the review sessions, the TA's teach you how to do his test questions. M2 was the most difficult.
Just a straight god
Lectures were so unorganized and he made no sense. Taught myself with Khan academy, which was pointless because his exams had nothing to do with what he lectured about. Just memorize how to do the practice test problems if you want to do well in the class. The exams are basically the same.
I like Dr. K. Good, respected prof! He does lecture a bit more broadly than what he expects us to know but he is VERY accessible outside of class so if you need any clarification he can easily answer your question. Midterms exactly like practice exams he post. He gives lots of extra practice so you should do well
Prof K is a good professor and teacher. His exams are more application based rather than information which is probably why some people rated him low because his lectures does not reflect the things we need to know for the exam. However, his practice exams are very very similar to actual exams and he is always accessible for help outside of class
Dr Kliebenstein gives fair exams. Lots of studying by myself but his exams are a lot of problem solving and makes me think criticially, like a puzzle, which makes it fun for me lol. Anyways, yes kind of hard prof because his lectures are a bit vague , but lots of practice exams. 2 Midterms and a final. Daily quizzes for participation only
This class is test heavy with 2 midterm and a final making up 90% of your grade and 10% participation quiz. I was kinda furious because I got 94s on the midterm but a 80 on the final and that dropped my grade from a solid A to a B+. But other than the unfair weight, I don't mind Dr. Kliebenstein. Good guy, decent prof
While the lectures are often wordy and his writing is nigh illegible, he provides many resources for students to succeed. Previous notes and practice exams are available. Quizzes are graded for participation, alongside 3 exams. It is a simple class if you have previous knowledge of genetics, but maybe steer clear if you are newer to the subject.
I liked him. Sometimes his lectures were fast and a little confusing, but he had recorded lectures on his canvas that we could go back and watch at our own pace and covered the same topics. Definitely a good choice, and I think he does care about the students and gives them the best chance he can in an upper div bio course.
This class was way too hard for what it should be in my opinion. The lectures are all over the place and the exams are nothing like what we learn in class. We do get practice exams, but the actual exams are still hard to complete even after having watched the lectures. No rounding of grades as well.
I don't know why people are giving this prof good scores. He shows zero care to the information he teaches, and tests on ideas HE DID NOT COVER in the topics he briefly went over. The only reason i succeeded in this class is because his past exams have many questions that are similar/identical to questions you will have. I learned nothong from him.
Idk what gave this man the right to make his class so impossible. The only reason I succeed was my TA and spending 8-9 hours on his exams using every resource available to me. Don't get me wrong this man is super smart and knows his stuff but the class and the exam are two COMPLETELY different things. Genetics is easy, idk what he is testing us on.
He was alright, but his TA's really made the class. He taught the course material well enough, but didn't teach to the test. He gave plenty of test material, including previous tests to work off which was wonderful, but to actually make it through the class you need the TAs. Please utilize the discussion. Overall alright though.
Literally no point in going to lecture because his exams are unrelated to the lecture content. Just study from his past exams (he posts them all on Canvas and the format is unchanged) and the quizzes and watch the TA review sessions. Honestly don't think I learned a single thing from his class, unfortunately. I just learned how to take his exams.
Class was overall okay, but lectures seemed a little messy and tests weren't all-inclusive or fully relevant. Material on tests were harder/separate than the material given in class to "really test our problem-solving skills". I didn't take the associated discussion and felt it was unnecessary. Study past exams and you'll be fine.
He is good. He gives plenty of practice exams which are similar to his actual exams, so USE them! Discussion was really helpful because of the TAs and their review sessions. Practice quizzes were easy also. You have 2 midterms and a final. I felt the topics for the 1st midterm were easier. Then it gets tricky and little hard. Recommend him!
While lecture is not mandatory attendance, it is strongly recommended you go. He writes on a black board instead of having slides for note taking so be prepared to draw sometimes! The TAs of this class did amazing with explaining the practice exams and holds review sessions the Friday before exams are released. You get about 25 hours for each exam
He's not a bad professor but the tests aren't really based on lectures. I don't recommend him if you can take another prof. Use the practice midterms to study but beware of errors in the answer keys. The TAs were terrific; if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have done well in this class, go to office hours and midterm review sessions
Lectures are beyond boring but the tests were online and he gave you over 24 hours to do them. They look identical to practice tests he provides too.
Boring lectures, but you learn a lot conceptually. His handwriting and diagrams are awful, but pay attention and you'll learn a lot. Exams are super fair, identical to practice exams. Ask questions and take the discussion section, and an A is fair game.
Test heavy, but about 10% of your grade is based on Canvas quizzes graded on completion instead of accuracy. He gives you access to 4 years' worth of old exams for each midterm/final and the format is the exact same so you won't get any surprise questions. A very fair professor but AWFUL lecturer (he uses only handwriting and poorly drawn diagrams)
His lectures were long and boring. Even though his exams are made to be taken online, don't be fooled because you're NOT going to hit 90 on those. What was supposedly an easy course to many other undergrads in other UCs is made extremely difficult because of this one dude. Avoid taking him if you care about getting an A!
Has 3 TAs to help with the test material. The test material is based on the previous exams provided to you to study. The only thing that was weird is that he wouldn't release the answer key for the final even though he did for the other exams to check what you got wrong. Apparently curves the tests not the final grade. Can't see curve though.
This class is NOT EASY but is required for many majors. The grade is 2 midterms, 1 final, and practice quizzes. You may think the exams are identical to the practices but he changes 1 word in the question so you need to know the material backwards and forwards. He has a policy where he will exampt you from an exam for a medical reason which is nice
Boring lectures and didnt really learn much from them. However, the exams are super doable if you do ALL of the practice exams, which are very similar to the real exam (takehome). Wording varies on the real exam so you have to read carefully. TAKE GOOD NOTES. All the info you need to answer non-problem based questions can be found in the lectures.
If you want a teacher who isn't single handedly the worst teacher ever then don't take Daniel, Everything we are taught is 10% of the actual course/midterms, imagine being taught 2+2, then the exam is vector calc.
By far one of the most boring and uninteresting professors I have had. I have learned his exact material in other classes before and he explains it the worst I have ever seen. It's obvious that he does not care about his students due to his lack of enthusiasm. His excuse of having "dry humor" stems from the fact that it looks like he HATES it here.
The comment saying he teaches 2+2 and tests us on vector calc is true. Imagine a 70s avg on a take home exam. It is crazy.
Enjoyed his lectures. Some questions on the exams (identical to practice ones he provides) are based off small parts from his lecture to check if you're really listening. I enjoyed his class and he provides all the resources you need to succeed. Elli and Anna are amazing TA's that really support his teaching style. Office hours are very helpful.
I don't recommend. Seems like a nice guy but teaching isn't the best and his exams are just foul. They r difficult, way different from what he teaches in lecture (some stuff he didn't teach at all), and typos and mistakes on every exam and he doesn't even give full credit for his own mistakes + barely curved. I deserved a better experience w bis101
No slides, only wrote on the chalkboard. Lectures were not helpful and went on tangents. Tests were take home and open note, but because lectures were bad, notes did not help. Didn't seem to care to provide extra resources even when we asked for slides/visuals, and tests often had typos and were poorly written. I took great notes but didn't help.
He explains concepts well, but his lectures are pretty boring. The content on the exams is a lot harder than what he teaches in lecture. He also doesn't have lecture slides. The exams are take-home, but still have averages of 75%-ish. He posts practice exams from that are really similar to the real exam, so that's your best bet for studying.
Prof is indifferent to students + teaching. I'm convinced he teaches just to keep his lab lol. Lectures are awful, he either can't explain topics or doesn't care to. Textbook + discussions are a must. The TAs CARRY this class. Exams are online but ave score is terrible. I don't know anyone who got an A. He ruined genetics for me honestly.
Won't lie, his lectures were pretty confusing and a little boring, but he was actually incredibly nice, if you go to his office hours like once a week you will 100% no doubt get an A in the class, exams are at home open note but incredibly difficult which is why office hours is needed so you can review the past midterms, if you do this its an A+.
Not a bad person but a pretty bad professor. Halfway through the quarter I stopped going to class and just went to office hours and practiced old exams. Exams are online and not timed but to succeed you need to DRILL old exams so you know exactly how to answer each specific question. Also read very carefully. Grade is just 3 exams so be careful.
Fairly ok lecturer, tried using a chalkboard to teach genetics.Nice guy and good with questions but couldn't make heads or tails of his notes. Exams are take-home, open note, but ridiculously hard. TAs and the practice exams are KEY. If you're an incoming first year,I would recommend holding off on this class and taking later with someone else.
