I learned a lot from Mr. Kraus, I think he should teach more Chemistry classes because he really makes the lecture intersting and is very hands on and helpful in the lab. Read the book and go to class to get a good grade.
He was awsome to learn from. Made class an adventure. Related lessons to every day things. Always willing to stay after and help you understand. Highly recommend this teacher !!!!!!!
BY FAR THE WORLDS BEST CHEMISTRY TEACHER. HE TEACHES YOU. AMAZING CONCEPT. DON'T GO TO EASTERN FOR CHEMISTRY !
Mr. Krus is a wonderful teacher. If you do not understand the info. ask and he will go over it until you understand. What he teaches in class in consistant with what it on the test. You SHOULD also read the book sections assigned. Mr. Krus makes class interesting by relating what you are learning with day to day things. CHOOSE KRUS !!
Krus is an awsome teacher. U will learn a lot from him. I highly recommend anybody who has to take CEM to take it with Krus. He is very helpful and makes sure u understand the material. Chemisry was a lot of Fun.
He's cool.
He is a good teacher. I am learning a great deal from his class. He makes the math easy.
He put the "anal" in "analytical chemist." This is not a joke. This is the essence of Dan Krus. He is VERY particular about certain things. And it's impossible to know what. Overall, though, he's a good teacher, and an interesting, fun person. I would recommend him. Just... be careful.
committed to makins sure material is understood; good feedback
NOT a good teacher, condescending, discourages questions. Mr. Krus monitors the comments on this site, if your comment is not positive, expect a very NASTY email from Mr. Krus.
great instructor - explains material in clear manner
He has a rough exterior, and it's not just his language. I wouldn't recommend him for those who tend to take things personally or are the "sensitive" types. He's also grades hard on the labs - very, very few A's. That said, he cares about cem and knows how to relate the material. Just don't expect it to be an easy A because it's "Intro" Chemistry.

Dan Krus is hard but fair. He's really fair and understanding. He's a people person who knows his stuff.Highly reccommended if need chemistry.
I highly DO NOT recommend this teacher. Personally he's way loud doesn't teach right, makes you feel incompetent. Don't take him. Seriously, don't.
Hard to learn from, he wants you to try and ask other classmates first and him last. Moves really fast over material, especially if you have never had any experience with the class.
AWFUL. Honestly, this is not a good teacher. He enjoys telling the students that many of them will drop the class: "They drop like flies, hahaha!!!" Take his class if you hate life...
Dan is a cool guy, as long as you don't ask a stupid question!:) But seriously he is a tough grader on your lab reports but he will teach you what you need to know to move on for Cem111. I am glad I got him this semester and wish him lots of luck....
Likes to get off track and waste time. He tends to embarress the people who don't understand the lecture or who don't understand his way of teaching. Swears contantly, doesn't take responsibility for his actions.
he makes chemistry interesting. Very good at explaining material. Anyone who does not like him probably just doesn't like chemisttry and needs someone to blame.
He is one of the best teachers I have had. You can ask any question you want, he does not give you the answer, but makes you think out the answer and you then will understand the question. Very fun class. He is a very fun guy and easy to talk to.If you want to understand chemistry to succeed in future chemistry classes take his class, thanks Mr Krus
krus is a good teacher, you will have to earn your grade there aren't to many extra credits or freebies, but he provides you with all the information and practice materials you will need to be successful, if you make the effort he is more than fair. And, krus is actually a very cool guy im glad i took his class and i would recommend him to others
Krus was a very good teacher, he does help you if you want it. He will stay after class(not lab)until you get it. your can e-mail with ?'s most times. I like the fact he has worked the biz(chem)BUT! Krus, you do pick your favorites and they get ?'s answered when others don't; but I still think your good teacher. of course i know how toget aroundthat
Mr.Krus is the best teacher I've had a WCC. If you need help he'll give it to you. It's a good idea to have a sense of humor going into his class. He is a laid back and makes class fun. I love all his life experiences he ties into lecture. Cem 090
The guy knows chemistry and is a very nice person- good personality. Cem 090 is supposed to be "HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY" this course as taught will eat up all your time, so don't take any other course with it. Many people drop out of the HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY because there are umpteen ways to fail and thats even if you make it to the 71/2 week halfwa
Homework isnt graded so dont bother doing it. Make sure to print notes before class b/c he goes kinda fast thru the slides so its hard to write all the notes. Overall he was a pretty good teacher. Also dont buy the book its a waste of money, just use his lecture notes to study. Make sure u do the practice tests each week theyre worth alot of points
Dan is an awesome dude. He has a sense of humor and helped me realize that I can actually get chemistry. Really good at explaining the chemistry concepts and why things are the way they are. He is fair and good at making conversation. Highly reccomend him. Especially if you've never taken Chemistry before.
He teaches well, but for an intro to chem class, he has higher expectations than he should. Overall a great teacher. he's quite funny too. once you get over his weird shirts, you will like him.
Nothing to say
No BS kinda guy. Very good chemist, ONLY TAKE THIS GUY IF YOU WANT TO LEARN! No freebies, gotta learn. Does not like disrespectful attitude.
Mr krus is a great teacher ask him about his krus diagram it will help with your per expressions over all if you want to learm chem take him. best cem teacher ive had
Everything in this thread is true about him. Some days in class & i was like wow i really like this guy, other days, not at all. Hes funny but knows it. He does pick favorites & makes it very obvious. He will answer their questions & ignore others. You MUST be on time. Theres a certain way he does his math if you dont understand it, expect to fail
Awesome teacher! I had him a year ago and he tought me everything i need to know about the foundations of chemestry.
I do think he knows his subject but the attitude in class stinks. When he gets down to doing his job he is great but at times he is clearly flirting with the younger female students and it is sickening to watch.
I can't believe I just read that someone thinks he flirts with younger students. Dan jokes around with anyone who enjoys interacting in class- regardless of age or gender. I'm a woman and NEVER has he been remotely inappropriate with me. Dan likes hard workers and if the person before participated more in class Dan would probably joke with him too
I had him and found his class really AWFUL. He has his little favorites and makes it clear who likes and doesn't. I dropped out because of him and then I had Larry Taylor. The difference is huge and I am now running at 91%. cHOOSE ANOTHER TEacher !
First off let me say I think Dan is one good looking guy, too bad he is married, whoo whooo? That being said, his class is hard and it takes a lot of time. If you are having troubles he is MORE then willing to help. He even came in on a Saturday ,on his day off to help a group of us. If you need help ASK! The talk of him having his favorites is n
On a lab last week two students got ripped, nearly to the point of tears(one has a disability). In contrast, the ones who don't know anything, that always stroke his ego get special treatment. so don't talk to me about there not being favoritism.
Penmanship is of extreme importance(if you are not a favorite)in this prof's class. An undotted I will be assumed to be an L if you are not a fav and if i is the right answer and L is wrong. I have lost points because a sentence began 1/3 of an inch from the margin line, rather than flush against it. I have thrived under another prof.
I highly recommend Krus to anyone who has an interest in chemistry and/or has had trouble with chem in the past. I've always struggled with this subject and am now doing very well thanks to his teaching methods. Chem is a very hard subject to learn from a textbook, a good professor is VERY important! Just go to class and don't be late for lab.
This teacher expects college level work from college kids. I irretate the**** out of Dan and I have a 93%. His course is tough because the foundation of cem is important and will pay off in the future classes. Show up for lab, do your part, and be respectful.
Did you just call me, a fellow class mate stupid? I work hard for my grades and while I joke with Dan, I don't get special treatment. I'll never get 100% on his labs because of my mistakes but do well coz he's a GREAT teacher. So how does this make friendly people stupid? If you want an easy teacher go back to junior high.
Let's be real. The class is not easy. If you're not willing to put in the effort, don't take his class. With that said, if you are having difficulties understanding the material, & are putting in the work, Dan will put in the time to help you. I would highly recommend him to all who want to actually learn and aren't just looking for an easy grade.
Here is an example of Dan's lab for paper chromatography in his provided procedures that I pasted. This is how thorough he is. Obtain a pre-cut piece of filter paper and lay it down on a paper towel. Use a pencil and a ruler to draw a line along one of the shorter sides, 2 cm from the edge of the paper. This is the bottom of the chromatogram.
Mr Krus needs to be aware of WCCs policy on leaving a lab while students are still there. It is strictly prohibited. An instructors role in class is not to sit and read email, fawn over doctor's wives, track stars under 25, or any other young female who finds his attention alluring. Nor is it his job to bark at anyone asking a genuine chem questi
Ok, First I want to say that Mr. Krus is a good hard but good teacher. Yes he jokes, Yes he Yells (some times) But he can joke with every one and can be hard on every one. He grades you according to the facts and across the board. I think every one should grow up and realize that you chose to have this teacher no one made you.
OK well let me comment again without my name. My teacher has never been inappropriate with me ("the doctor's wife as you said"). He is kind and tough on all of us. And to make it clear, you with the bad skin and dark hair who are posting all these lies about our teacher- grow up. We know who you are. And FYI, D has never left a lab EVER.
Sorry, I did not know that I was talking to the next Thomas Steitz. It must be hard to live in a world of such mortals that do not know about scientific notation from birth. How can you even rate this teacher when you are not even in his class? I for one have beter things to do(like chemistry homework)then go back and fourth about this with you.Later
to the idiot who judged others for spelling chemistry as cem090 in the description- that is how wcc lists it as such. Who is the idiot now?
Please...Just go away.
Oh my gosh D you are amazeballs! Thanks for helping us the way you so. We all know the people who are complaining are just idiots who are too lazy to work hard in lab. My gosh, some are too lazy to even wash their hair.
LOL you guys are such losers. Molarity is totally covered in class. Didn't you see the diagram he provided online for moles and such? Hold on to your panties- it's going to be molarity all the way to the end. If you can make it!
Thought I'd come check in on Dan's reviews given all the love and hate he got previous semesters, plus there is this bizarre dude in my class (god help me he never shuts up) he can't stop talking about how horrible Dan is. I'm sure it's all him posting these reviews because he's on this site in every class. You are so pathetic cupcake.
DOnt take his class. This teacher is very confusing at times. Other times he explains the material throughly (perhaps to much) and somewhat clear. He lectures on about his personal life stories. He doesn't really teach well.In his labs, you have to work quick or will fail. Just do the practice test over and over and work swiftly and you will pass
I get nervous going to his class be cause he is so abrasive and has his favorites. Clearly people are divided but if you are someone who is serious about your work then this is not the class to take. I suggest trying someone else.
If you think this teacher has favorites then you should ask yourself if any teacher prefers hard working students over lazy farmville playing kids? Dan is cool- but to get respect you need to give it back. That's how it works with anyone. So show up for class, be respectful, don't be late, and don't cheat.
I had him last semester and received an A grade but yet I still feel that his attitude in class makes for a difficult atmosphere for most students. I was never interested in his private life or hearing bad language. I actually saw him hug another female student. He needs an update on appropriate behavior twoards female students.
He plays favorites, he does not care if your a hard working student or play farmville, he completly rude, and if your not a good looking female, he does not give to sh*ts about you. I have him now, and if you do ask a question he looks at you like some idiot. I would never tell another student to take his course. He's a fail :)
I agree with the previous reviewer. There are favorites and it helps if you are eighteen years old without a clue then suddenly you get all of his attention. The labs are horrible, his whole Napoleon complex just shines on through.
I never thought of myself as pretty. Infact how would a big girl like me who never wears make up and has acne scars ever think that way. Dan is a very nice guy, he is firm and strict but good. I don't know if you're referring to him hugging me from shoulder to shoulder in class when I was crying but it was only kind and supportive, not weird.
Find a piece of wood and place it in a chair in a lab and you will find it to be more helpful than Dan. WCC is not the place for him. I have never been more offended by any instructor. I am amazed that no one has given him the boot.
Awful!
I have heard enough crap from the crybabies. It is time that an adult steps up and puts their thoughts out. The class I was in had a bunch of students that still needed to grow up. Mr. Krus may have had a favorite or two in the class but did you ever think it might have been because they respected him for what he knew & didn't leave class early.
Unfortunately this professor does not like what he does. My experience was horrible. I felt helpless because he is not the kind of professor that likes to explain more than once. He expects you to know; and great if you don?t ask questions. I was lucky enough to be able to drop the class on time before too late. I have never heard so many bad v
Dan was a great teacher to me. He took time to explain things especially when a lot of us showed that we didn't get it. He is passionate about Chemistry and you can tell this is a subject that he loves to teach about and tell stories about how it relates to everyday life. I found his class to be interesting and sometimes even fun. A+++
Krus's 090 class was the first chemistry class I had ever taken. I am now excelling into organic chemistry, partially because of the wonderful base in chemistry I got from this awesome professor. He knows chemistry and he teaches it in a no-nonsense fashion. Take this man if you want to really understand the material!!!
DK was a great teacher. I have never taken any chemistry and he was easy to understand. You need a basic knowledge of math though. He explains everything in detail and coming to class and doing homework is extra credit! Lab can be tricky, but get a good partner and ask questions you'll do fine. Take the practice test and youre sure to get an A!
Worst chemistry teacher in the department, hands down. He is rude, and his Powerpoints were not very helpful. The time to take the tests in the Testing Center were a little odd as well. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I really enjoyed being in his class he was very helpful if you didnt understand the subject he was teaching he was very patient with you and took his time to explain it.Loved Dan!!!!
do NOT take his class. he expects you to know it all off the bat. he has faves and if you are not one of them then you are on your own. he does not like to answer questions so dont expect do get any answers from him, save yourself the time, energy and stress DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
Mr. Krus is AWESOME! He enjoys teaching chemistry and provides students with everything they need in order to pass the class. It's up to the student to do their part. If you participate in class and in the labs, then you will pass the class without any issues. I came out of the class with an appreciation for chemistry that I never had before.
This professor has a passion for teaching, will he answer questions yes, but he expects you to do your work as well. I like his style of teaching and would recommend him to any other student needing to take CEM 090. He is fun in class and not only makes chemistry interesting but also a lot of fun.
You will have to do your own work. Nothing will be spoon fed to you. If you are doing the work and asking intelligent questions (not questions from week one on the last week of class), he will go out of his way for you. May not be the best choice for timid students. Speak up and ask questions and you will do well provided you study.
If you are planning on being a Chem major he is a great instrutor. If you are taking the class b/c it is required, he is NOT the one to take. He will mark you off for things other instructors don't care about i.e. using ruler to make data tables.
This guy makes chemistry needlessly hard and seems to have an axe to grind with his students. Take Nevius instead - she is much nicer, WAAAY more effective and the material sticks better with her.
great at explaining, easy to understand, very upbeat
He is very rude and not helpful at all. If you ask a question that he thinks you should already know, he looks at you like an idiot and still doesn't clarify. He will let you complete an entire lab and at the end tell you that you did it completely wrong and he will not stay a minute over to help in lab. I wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy.
Dan Krus is brilliant and terrifying. He's friendly most of the time, but often gets excited when people ask questions. Because of this, it is easy to misinterpret his answers as him yelling at you. He's a tough lab grader, but that's how he separates the men from the boys. If you don't like it, go study poetry.
"How do you pass Daniel's class?" You don't.
Made Chemistry more difficult than it should be. Take Larry Taylor; he's an inspiration and he thrives off teaching, not ego.
Dan is brilliant. Just being in the same room as this guy is educational. He radiates knowledge. He had the professional attitude of a major University professor, despite being at a community college. I feel prepared for transferring to a 4-year University. Would take again.
Dan's class will leave you with a solid understanding of basic chemistry. He's very intelligent and cares about your understanding of the material. I didn't realize I liked chemistry until I took this class, but Dan's enthusiasm made it clear. Teaches good lab note-taking. Plus, he'll bring in food for you. Would definitely take again.
While taking this class I sometimes felt that Prof. Krus was a bit to picky when grading the labs. He requires you to pay attention to even the smallest detail. The next semester when taking CEM 111 I realized just how helpful this was. Applying his tough standards helped me to receive an almost perfect score on the lab portion of my CEM 111 grade.
Dr. Krus is great! He definitely knows a lot about chemistry and is very excited about teaching it! He tells stories and is relatable during class. These stories often help students understand the subject better. Do expect to work though. Chemistry is not easy and you need to prepare (especially for labs). I would definitely take him again.
Dan Krus is one of the best teachers I have ever had!! I have never been interested in chemistry but he made it fun to learn and I actually got into it. His lectures are not boring he tries to make it as fun as possible. He explains things very well and is always available if you need help! I would recommend him in a heartbeat!
Dan Krus was hilarious in every lecture I ever had with him. Although he's tough, particularly in labs, he ultimately pushed me to be better at chemistry, and to be a better scholar. He believes in the maturity and capability of his students, sometimes more than he should, but this belief drives students strive to live up to his expectations.
One of a kind professor. If you care about becoming more knowledgable in the subject, make sure you take his class! He cares about teaching you what you need to know, and makes it interesting and fun. If you flake and want an easy grade, don't waste his time. His knowledge exceeds text book talk, and gives relatable examples. It's a fun class!
Dan Krus is a great professor! He is very knowledgable and passionate about Chemistry which are both great things to look for in a professor. He really cares about his students and their success. He is all around a great guy and will offer help if you need it.
Dan Krus is an excellent teacher. My husband and I took his class, both oblivious to the wonders of chemistry. He opened our minds, introduced us to the "Krus Diagram", which perfectly explains stoichiometry and made sure we left the course ready for future courses. Now we both attend an Ivy league school, still taking Chemistry. Thank you, Dan!!!
Dan Krus is an excellent teacher for Chemistry. He is proficient is his teaching skills and will push you to succeed. His teaching style is refreshing and I learned a lot from taking his class.
Dan Krus is a great teacher! Coming into the class I knew nothing about Chemistry, but I can definitely say I have learned a lot from him! He constantly encourages students to succeed, & will help any student who put time and effort into doing so! He always says he's tough, because he wants all his students to be prepared for wherever they go next!
Definitely not a blow-off course. The material can be tough, but Krus has a way of explaining things in an out-of-the-box, easy to understand type of way. I remember being upset the day we had a sub because I preferred Dan's style of teaching. Ready and willing to help, especially when students put forth effort and show initiative. Great guy.
Dan is one of the best professors I have ever taken during my years at Washtenaw. He is strict about lab preparation, but guides you through the process and makes sure you will know what to expect in more advanced chemistry courses. He is funny and his lectures are great. Lots of small easy tests. I would definitely take him again if I could!
Dan really made chemistry make sense for me. He won't hold your hand and spoon feed you material or force you to participate but he will respect you if you respect him and if you genuinely work hard you will get a good grade. If you are dedicated to the class he is extremely helpful but don't expect him to go out of his way for you if you slack off
Dan is a great professor. He works with a lot of examples, which I personally found really helpful. I recommend going to class, he keeps the lectures interesting by referencing his own experiences. He will not let you off easy just because this is an introductory course, but this prepared me very well for when I took my next chemistry course.
I had never taken chemistry before. With that said, professor Krus made the topic fun and provided examples that made it easier to understand. He is not an easy A though. He (like teachers should) expected you to actually learn the material, not just memorize it. His teaching style made sure that happened. Work hard and you will do fine.
I have thoroughly enjoyed Dan's class because he doesn't just teach what we need to know for the test, but applies what we are learning with lively and funny stories and real-world examples. He encouraged me and made me realize I was capable of succeeding. He will not let you "slide by" but will make you really learn the subject. Great guy!
Having an inspirational instructor is key. I felt Mr. Krus pushed me to getting an A. Class is entertaining, sometimes we had tangents during lecture, however almost always chemistry related and fairly entertaining. He is very firm. Which is needed in a course like this. And can appear gruff, however is approachable and genuinely wants you to learn
Such a great guy. Knows his stuff. Hard to know what is going on if you don't go to class though. He offers his power points on blackboard too. Also tells some good stories! Very few things to be graded on though! Made it easy to get a good grade with his practice tests online that are mandatory.
Dan Krus made chemistry enjoyable for me and I would recommend him to anyone looking to take his class. TAKE THE PRACTICE TESTS!!
This man is totally insane, in the most positive way possible. Its quite obvious he's a genius in Chemistry, but the way he teaches it might not be for everyone. He tells a lot of stories, some relevant, most not (he talked about alcohol a LOT). His lab is the most stressful class I have taken at WCC. Way harder than any other lab offered here.
First two labs are going to be the worst days of your life. Yes he chooses favorites. No I was not one of them. Just take a lot of practice quizzes and youll ace every quiz. Honestly, Great teacher, but Im telling yall, These labs are INTENSE for an intro level class. Aside from that, his lectures are awesome, and hes a good person.
