Uses Aplia, which you have to pay for, but includes a textbook online (which you can download) so you don't have to buy a textbook. tests were fair but a bit tough (if he doesn't end up curving the scores only like 3 students will end up with A's out of 70), homework from Aplia is easy and is usually due once a week online.
the online homework is easy, but what kills you is everything else about the class. He cannot lecture, his tests dont make sense, he makes tons of mistakes, he keeps you till the last second of class, I could complain forever, but I'll stop and just say don't take this guy
Very helpful during office hours. The hw/lectures don't really correlate with the test. I wouldn't take him again.
Lectures/hw/book don't really correlate with test. Study guide isn't helpful either. You just need to understand the subject. He's super nice and willing to help you. Just study everything. Test answers are vague so you dont know which to pick! I wouldn't take him again. I got an A though. But thats only cause I <3 econ.
I agree with most of these reviews. His tests and lecture didn't seem to correlate at all. He's very enthusiastic and keeps you engaged, but when you think you've learned something, you take a test and realize you are mistaken. He sometimes misspeaks in his lectures and corrects himself, but can end up being confusing. I think 06 was his first year
Hes very unorganized, its annoying. He post the wrong homework problems, wrong due dates, and changes it last minute. I would save yourself the headace and take someone else.
He is young, helpful, but I learn nothing from this class. Take other professors if your major is business.
MISTAKE! This professor's lectures are unorganized and useless. He posts incorrect due dates/homework assignments. He humiliates his students as an example for economic problems. He continually goes on about how we need to be university type students (THEN GO TEACH AT A UNIVERSITY) and he refuses to offer any extra credit. BE SURE TO AVOID !!
I took Dan because he was young. I figured he'd keep my attention going for the class duration. BIG MISTAKE. The other comments are true. The tests have nothing to do with the material. His lectures are useless. The class was a huge waste of time. I got a C in the class. If you're interested in keeping your GPA, do not take Dan Kuo.
I personally enjoyed this professor because he challenged me as a student. All tests were open-ended questions which you had to fill in on your own. He was helpful and really tried to make his students understand, but you could tell he's new and needs to work on his teaching, and possibly devoloping a more effecient system of teaching.
hes alright..sometimes can be confusing to understand
Very Clear Teacher. You just need to pay attention in class and do your homework. Essays are kinda hard since its a whole page on some basic questions that can be answered in a paragraph. Be organized and prepare for a lot of critical thinking.
I had alot to say, but it was too long, Basically he is a Fun young guy who will keep the class contemporaty. The class seems unorganized at times, like its a trial run. His papers seem difficult to do well on, but some do well. Utilize office hours becuase you will need them, final review sheet was nearly 40 pages, and the students made it.
I went into this class not knowing anything about economics, and i felt completely lost all throughout the entire semester. Homework assignments, papers, or quizzes due every class. This was the hardest class i have taken so far, but he wants you to do well so just get help if u need it.
Didn't like his teaching style. He can be unorganized at times. The material from the book seems irrelevant from the questions on the exam. Not recommended. Seems like a nice person on a personal level though.
Basically, I am a lifetime 4.0 student who barely managed a B in this class, and even that took way too much effort for a general Macro course. If you have no life and can devote your entire free time to his class, then take him. Otherwise, this is your godsent sign to stay the hell away. You have been warned.
Nothing in his class is multiple choice. Every test, quiz, and homework assignment is all 'showing your work'. He doesn't like giving partial credit. Don't fool yourself into thinking you can just 'get by' in this class.
Definitely not an easy A if thats what you are looking for, but if you are interested in learning about econ and how it relates to the real world take this class. If you go to class and do the problem sets and you will be fine. Makes you write essays throughout the semester and is pretty hard on grading them. Overall I really liked his teaching sty
Great class, prof. is very helpful and willing to stop the whole class if you ask for help. Sitting 5 rows back in both classes I can hear perfectly fine, even though it is a forum he doesn't need a microphone. You must not be lazy in this class or you will fall far behind. I recommend this if you want a real college experience.
He is trying to prepare his students for university level classes, and if you don't want that challege, why are you in college in the first place? Go to class, ask questions, DO THE HOMEWORK (really helps to understand the material) Suprise, suprise, you have to make an effort to get an A. I think he is a great professor (and I hate economics)
He is the most helping teacher i have ever seen in the college. I learned a lot about economics. His test are not hard if you are going along with class( doing HW seriously, asking questions, and putting all effort in the writting papers). Even then if you get a "B" you will not regret for your enough hardwork. Real study is putting all your effort.
Cool guy. Very intelligent, but sets expectations too high. Goes through the material way too fast in class. When it comes to the tests you're lost because you never have a chance to exercise the material in class. His comments about going to work and school at the same time are very discouraging; he relies on "myeconlab.com" too heavily.
Definitely not that great of a teacher. He collects notes from college students, which makes me feel like I'm in high school. He tries to give us "study tips" which is okay because he means well, but he treats us like we're stupid. don't go to him for personal help if you can't handle impatience.
His class is HARD. A lot of work too. But he's fair, and a good teacher. You'll learn a lot if you put in the work. Overall, if you want to learn something, take his class.
Could be a good teacher if he prepared his lectures better. Hard subject to follow, and he jumps around and looses focus in the middle. Holds his students to a hard line of expectations. He is kind of hypocritical since he isn?t always prepared. Obvious new teacher. Has quizzes, hard to answer, they will lower your grade in most cases (multiple cho
very difficult and extensive requirments, quizzes, and tests. He is a very smart man, just needs to explain things better and give a more clear percise lecture. You will learn a lot but it isn't worth the effort
Real hard.... loses you in the lectures and doesn't clarify many things.. smart man just not a great teacher.
He is SO HARD. He's a really nice guy & I enjoyed his stories about his personal life, but his teaching style is awful. He's never prepared for his lectures and he expects way too much from students who have never taken an econ class before. He makes you feel pretty dumb if you don't understand and if you miss a class he freaks out. Don't take him!
nope! don't even bother. His teaching style is so unclear
He thinks that he is so smart because he has a PhD. Well why is he such a horrible teacher. He is the worst instructor I have ever had. His lectures are not clear and he enjoys answering are questions in a condescending manner. Every lecture I have to drag myself to class where I wish that I was somewhere else the entire time.
He's a very good teacher that is difficult because he's preparing you for the next level.
He is the worst teacher ever... and he thinks he is super smart
that's true...he thinks he is genius..know everything..but his explaining makes students complicated..no extra credits.. he likes when student get low grades over all..I've seen many students dropped his class.
his class is so hard. his quizzes are super hard and there are a lot of homework.
He is really hard and his exams are too. I didn't like him at first but then I started going to office hours and he was really helpful and nice. If you don't like econ or aren't interested in it I would say don't take his class.
The class overall was very difficult, it didn't help that the teacher wasn't that great. His tests are really hard and its hard to get over a 50% on them, from what i saw from everyone around me. His class is curved though so the majority of the class is ending up with a C
Sweet class. Keep Kuo.
Expect to study your behind off and still be disappointed because this class is ridiculously hard. smart guy but his teaching style needs a lot of work. Only take this class as a last resort. Stay away or you will be extremely frustrated and your grade will suffer.
Kuo's a really good teacher, I would definitely recommend him. His class is NOT an easy A, but you will definitely learn a lot about economics if you take him.
This guy was hired at OCC for what he knows; not for how he teaches. You'll be teaching yourself.
kick a** teacher. relates to students well. makes a potentially boring class kind of interesting even for most apathetic students.
His Micro class is the worst class i have ever taken. He says that he doesnt trust his students because they all lie! Poor instructor. impossible tests. unreasonable teacher.Avoid this class at all costs for this is not one you want to be in trust me.
really really hard teacher. he definately knows his stuff but expects everyone to know it as much as he does. test are impossible, light hw, will help you if you go to him. wants you to learn but has trouble engaging the class. not an easy A, be prepared to study on your own and teach yourself. wants you to succeed.
He was hard, but I loved his class.
I swear to my life, this is one of the worst teachers i ever had in orange coast college. If you want to fail then go ahead and take his class , you will not understand what he says and he writes his own tests in which you cannot understand a thing . He doesnt curve so alot of people failed the class. The highest grade people can get is a B
Took him cause it fit my schedule..HORRIBLE CHOICE! He criticized me whenever i had a question! He's VERY condescending and arrogant towards his students. Talks too much about his girlfriend in class. Im not a slacker. I have a 3.8 gpa,and I worked hard in his class. But i decided to drop when i felt like the only grade i would get is a C!
Class is hard, but he is very helpful in office hours. I learned alot. You have to read for the exams.
Occ needs to find a solution for this type of a teacher. No one undertsands a thing on what this professor talks abotu in class. He expects too much from us thinking that were enconomics geniuses and he makes fun of us when we ask questions. Tests are impossible , till now he hasnt curved
He's egotistical and extremely hard. He doesn't do a good job of teaching the material, gives study guides that have nothing to do with his nearly IMPOSSIBLE exams. Literally, majority of the class had C or below average and he didn't bother offering a curve or any extra credit. He's indifferent and unsympathetic as well. Don't do it!!!!!
This professor was busy with his vacation with his gf so he didnt bother curving or looking at the final grades as i been told. 6o percent of the class ended up with Ds and Cs , highest was a B+
I took Microeconomics with him and HATED going to his class! I never missed a day and still did horrible!! I tried and even had a tutor but his exams are impossible! Good thing is, i deserved a D (by calculation) but he ended up giving me a C which was cool of him...but hes super hard and is super young and expects a lot
He has high expectations and does'nt treat you like a high schooler and he does curve the grades. He's making it like a university class. You have to read th book to pass.
He does not curve. people that pass this class 1) have this only class. 2) have no life. He even rated himself above. he doesnt curve!!!! . horribe professor , take my advice and stay away.
his lectures can be hard to understand, but he is helpful at office hours. READ the book and do the problems and you can get a b, hard to get an a.
One of the few professors at OCC who can't teach. I had to read from the book, since his lectures were confusing. barely passed. talks about his gf too much. If you want to learn, DON"T TAKE HIM
All that he care's about is how well you can say what you are trying to say. Half the time that's all he talks about, instead of talking about actual Economics! He needs to realize that its not an english class! He's super annoying!
This is a very challenging class. A lot harder than any of the university courses I've taken. He gives you all the materials you need to be successful. The decision on whether to use them or not is up to the student. Gotta read the book for the test. Study a lot for test. If you are not looking for a future in econ, you will not like this class.
class is hard because you have to read the book. If you don't want to read then don't take this class. He schedules extra office hours and answers all questions. He's really young and tries to make the class applicable to your life.
I found him to be a really good teacher. His lectures are really concise and his homework problems are good to study for the test. The class is actually very interesting. But I'm an accounting major so make of it what you will.
his lecture is hard..hw also hard.. get grade also hard..after first test, many ppl droped the class, and average score was c. and only hv 4 test, and each test hv 20% of value. if u wanna get score easy, don't take his class, but ur major is econ, i think even his class is hard, his class should be helpful for ur major and future.
He teaches at a UC level, which is awesome if you're a business major trying to challenge yourself in your field. If you need this class just to fill up your general ed, or to transfer, do not take him. He is hard to understand (very long detailed explanations that you really have to listen to and interpret to follow him.)
Ridiculous class. Goes on rants about how he went to Berkeley and is a total Elitist. Im majoring in business and have had friends help who graduated from USC, UCSD, Chapman, etc and said his questions are irrelevant to overall economics. He calls himself an economist but is a social economist, social economist got us into the mess we are in today
Great teacher. His class is not hard if you pay attention and take notes. Grades on a diffrent scale which is helpful. ex. 80+ is an A
Took for Microecon. Overall fair. PROS: Generally clear, sometimes entertaining, you will get the grade you EARN. CONS: Instruction moves too quickly and results in too much time remaining at the end of the semester, talks at length about "what college is like" and other rhetoric which detracts from limited lecture time, has a bit of an attitude...
He is probably the toughest teacher I have ever had, I passed with a B, and that B was not easy to get. He is very helpful, and REALLY cares about his students. BUT, he is an extremely hard grader on the exams. All his exams are handwritten, and the answers are either his way of thinking, or you get an F.He spends a lot of out of class time to help
Terrible INTRO level class. I took Macro first and earned a "B". I struggled to get a "C" in his class. He says that he is showing us what a college level class is like. But he's not. He is just showing that he is in charge and can do whatever he wants. He has even created his own grading scale!!! If you have to make that drastic of a curve
if you take him, its going to be the biggest mistake. he claims he is a real professor, but he is just plain evil. He ranks his scores having a 50% a C, so obviously any teacher that does that is hard and if he didn't rank it, we all would have gotten Ds and Fs
no one ever said college is easy,Kuo is just one professor that's trying to train his students to be prepared for what's next. If you're trying to ease ur way through easy courses and not take college seriously, then don't take him. if you have time to study and devote your time in school--then take him. he's a good professor and u can learn alot!
He is a terrible teacher! Your grade is based off of 4 tests and homework is only 5% and there is NO extra credit. His tests are impossible! He likes to brag about how many students dont make it to the end of the semester. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
He is really interesting and is willing to work with you outside of class. His class is only hard if you do not show up or read a little every week. He is a nice guy and tells funny stories every know and then. If you succeed in his class you then you are ready to transfer. His class is the real deal!
good class, good experience, homework and weekly econ indicators, but you just have to do it its not graded..... mostly notes/office hrs available....
Simply the worst professor to be teaching at OCC ! Only take this class if you plan to take no other classes. Homework is not graded and is only 5%. No Extra Credit, and hes got the worst test set-up's I've ever experienced... all essay form , not enough time for the amount of work required to put in his exams. Don't take it !!!
Offers a lot of help. Students are just lazy to show up to office hours. Just read the book, pay attention in class, and you'll ace the class. grades on a very generous scale ex) 80% and up is an A. If you cant pass this class just drop out..... lol....
Not the easiest class to take but he is very helpful in office hours. Spend the time put in the effort and you will do fine! He curves his grades alittle too. Helpful beyond just economics.
no fun teacher, he not cool, the da lame teacher, i no understand
I usually don't do this but I had to rate this professor. He was the worst professor I ever had. Not only is he hard but not very helpful. He make it seem like he is always right and that he know everything, and I believe its a bad quality to have in a person. His grading is harder than any professor I ever had. I highly recommend that you don't hi
Hes the worst professor you will ever have. Not only is he not helpful but he grade very hard which make it even harder to get an A, that is why I received a B in this class. If you are looking to be enrolled in a class where you can learn and receieve a good grade, I would say DON'T PICK THIS PROFESSOR.
1 of the best professors at OCC.Knows his material cold.Cares about students' success.Always prepared & very responsible.Super helpful and available(after classes and 4 days a week at office hours).Teaches students how to study & learn the material.Grades objectivly.Gives extra credit(worth 0.5 of a grade). On top of that,he is a fine person.
Dan is a great teacher who knows what he's talking about. He is adamant about how you write/say things, but that's because he wants to better you as a student. Your grade is based off of write-ups, 4 HW sets, the midterm, & final. I took Econ thinking it would be easy, but it really challenged me as a student & I've learned a lot. I recommend him!
In my personal opinion not a very good teacher. Willing to help you out, but throughout the year said multiple times he did not care that much. He doesn't even know the answers to his own quizzes we would tell him he got it wrong and would spend half the class arguing. I would avoid this professor if possible
Such an inspiring teacher at OCC! He is such a smart and interesting teacher! You will learn a lot about life as well as economics in this class. He truly cares about his students and will do whatever he can to help you succeed. Always available for office hours. He has an excellent class blog to keep all his student's up to date on class activitie
Kuo is a tough professor. If you plan on taking his class, know that you will have to put in the effort if you want to get a good grade. If you show him that you are trying and are putting in your best effort he will give you the benefit of the doubt. To get a good grade in this class you have to give your best effort.
One of the best professors I have ever had. People complain that he is hard, but that's because they do not do the reading and expect to pass exams. He gives outlines for exams and is very clear on the structure of the class. No homework, this class solely reflects that amount of time and effort you put in. TAKE IT.
His lectures are so confusing. I'm a good student, but i just seem to get so lost in his lectures. I find the book to be far more helpful than the professor. He expects more than most community college professors. He grades far too harshly. Not recommended.
hes a fantastic teacher, hes uber smart. hes a little cocky. textbook helps a lot. if you genuinely want to learn and walk away with more then just a piece of paper then take him, by no means an easy A (or B)
hes smart, knows his stuff, he genuinely prepares you for not just university by life in the workforce, you will need the textbook if u want to pass, grading scale is advantageous if you study
He is not difficult if you are a conscientious student, but if you're used to multiple choice questions and cramming before a midterm then this class is not for you. The topics are very interesting and he makes them even more so using relevant news articles. Has a sense of humor. Go to every session and pay attention if you want to pass.
He's good teacher! he is really helpful if you're asking for it. I learned a lot in this class. If you try hard, then you will get an A.
Econ is psuedo-science, but I need the class. I wasn't crazy about this Prof. Call it a napoleon complex or whatever, but he seemed a little too happy to "lay down the law" and liked swinging his man-parts around to show everyone who is boss. A lot of teachers try to identify with their students. Maybe try it? Syllabus is hilarious "I am the law!!"
If you want to actually learn about economics, Kuo is the Prof. for the job. But, this is not an easy class. Take Econ 100 first and get a good foundation to build on, if you can. I like Kuo. He's good people and he's got a great personality and even better sense of humor. He's not just blowing smoke when he says he's the best.
He's an interesting person and uses real life situations to the lessons we learn about in class. Not for the faint of heart because he will push you and call you out on your BS. Basically wants you to become a better thinker. The class gets easier as you become accustomed to his teaching style.
Great professor if your a down to earth person and enjoy some comical relief between lectures. he uses great real life situations to relate to his students way of think. Very funny and chill wouldn't mind throwing back a few beers with the guy
I took him for 100 and then again for 175. He is an amazing teacher. He doesn't care about attendance, but his class is actually interesting and I suggest you attend...it will help you. The problems in the book are helpful. You'll need to work for an A, but I REALLY recommend him.
I liked his teaching style. He actually forces you to think and go the extra step. He genuinely cares if his students learn unlike other profs. He teaches the material really well. He is really accesible if you need help. Grading wise an easy A. you can BS the HW, go over the notes and skim thru the book and will get at least a B. Highly reccomend.
Easy class. Just do homework, take some notes, and was an easy A for me. Its easily noticeable that Kuo is a rookie professor though; There are a couple topics that he can't explain as well. He tries hard though, and genuinely wants to help students who give good effort (especially in office hours!!). He HATES slackers though.
Great class to take but not for Econ majors. Always trying to teach a non-econ related lesson and make the class about coherent communication and writing. Has the occasional bout of online homework using Aplia; relies far too much on it and turns the class into a largely online based learning class.
do not take him if you are not an econ major. he is very unorganize (wings every lecture). he brags about himself a lot. he is unclear in what he expects us to write on our quizes/test.
I took micro with him first.I enjoyed a lot even it was a lot of work. But last fall when I took macro with him again, he changed his lecture style. I liked his essay format test way better than multiple choice form test. He knows what he teaches. Kuo is really nice when you especially visit him during office hour for questions.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE AN ECON/BUSINESS MAJOR! that is all.
omg where do I start? This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. His tests are all based off of short answers/free responses. I had no idea what I was doing. I ended up dropping the class. He does WANT you to succeed, but wow his teaching style is something i'm not used to. He is funny though, I gotta give him that.
For micro and macro he was very clear and helpful. His teaching style will likely turn you into a better student and make you actually synthesize your work instead of just following his directions. Definitely a challenge worth accepting if you are a dedicated student.
least favorite professor this year.
im amazed he hasnt been reported to the dean yet this guy is a complete useless joke...just got my TAKE HOME QUIZ back where my answers were completely FROM THE BOOK and I along with 70% of class all got a 0 on... he contradicts himself all the time, grades everything impossibly, if your answer is short its wrong, if its long its wrong.
the book and lectures are not much of academic work, or not at the Prof. expected level. So far, this class has more stresses than joys ! I personally think this class is for A students but not for students to work hard to get A
Disorganized, discouraging, and a hypocrite. His expectations are very high which i wouldn't mind if he didn't make them so damn ambiguous. I think that he expects berkeley level (collegiate as he puts it) thinking from us, yet he doesn't perform berkeley level teaching. Tldr: Don't bother taking his class...
He is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. I love business and economics and have been an A student all my life through rigorous courses. I had to drop due to impossibility of getting an A because all quizzes you get a zero on with no partial credit and tests are near impossible to even get a C. He is incredibly rude and degrading.
Do Not Take This Class! This class is unbelievably hard and I'm a hard working A student. I had to drop this class because there was absolutely no chance of passing. Mr. Kuo's style of teaching is ridiculous. I Really don't know how anyone could pass his class. I have 4.0 GPA friends who couldn't get higher than a zero on their tests!
Pros: Funny, knowledgeable, enthusiastic. Cons: Unprepared, inconsistent, critical, vague, subjective, pompous, disorganized, fussy, rude, insulting, ambiguous, belittling, finicky, exacting, and morale-killing.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I can't stress it enough. My whole class was not able to get more then a D on his first midterm and more than half the class has dropped. His office hours are pointless because there is always a line of concerned students at the door worrying about their grade that theres no time for 1 on 1 help with a topic. BEWARE!!!
Please dont take him. Literally if you have the chance to take it at another school even..OCC's econ department is terrible, and thats because hes the head of it. His wording is vague and his attitude is the most condescending thing I have ever witnessed. You'll have an F or D for the majority of the class. Enjoy and good luck.
He is honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. His tests are all short answer/paragraph (no scantron) and he only talks down upon the people in the class for being at this school instead of a 4 year school. Overall Just advoid him at all costs.
Great teacher. I feel those who give him negative reviews are the ones who expect an easy A and dont find one. Econ itself is not an exact science, so naturally he wont come off as being a black & white kind of lecturer. I definitely recommend Daniel. He is intelligent, funny and wants to help you succeed not just in class, but in college too.
For those who are interested in Econ, I strongly recommend you to take his class. It is a really challenging class, but for sure you will learn much out of it. He is a funny person and nice individual. His way of teaching will prepare you well for college courses. If you only want to get an easy A, and don't want to learn, then don't take him.
He is funny, smart and knows what he is doing. But not an easy class. Unlike other teachers, his teaching style is more professional. Not a lenient type of teacher. So better study well if you want to take his class.
I don't even know where to begin. Hardest class I have ever taken. I'm an A student and took many AP classes in high school, but this class killed my gpa. I took him for micro and macro simply because the econ department is not the best so I was forced to take it. I needed it for my major and got C's both times. His lecture's aren't always clear.
Such an awful class. I am a 4.0 gpa student since high school. He was degrading to his students, and instilled little confidence. I attended office hours multiple times asking for help, and he would refuse to help. I dropped with a W in order to take it again to actually have learn something.
Degrading to students... and his lectures are not organized, seems like he makes up his lectures along the way. Avoid to save your GPA.
hes very unorganize. makes up lecture has he goes. hes very unclear on what he wants you to write on the tests so a lot of people dont do well. overall, just not good.
This class was a challenge. READ and UNDERSTAND the textbook and you'll be fine. One thing I recommend is to try to teach what you learned to someone else, if you can then you know the material. If you can't, study some more.
He is one of most educated, funnies, and best professor at OCC. I realize that it is hard for students who used to take easy professors, but he is ready to help students especially during his office hours. Good students don't struggle in his class. In my opinion, he should teach an honors class because he holds high standards of education.
Only take this class if you're willing to learn a lot about economics in one semester.
He is a good teacher. Very smart and teaches professionally. In order to cope up with this class, you also have to learn professionally. Not an easy A class. You have to work hard for it. If you want an easy A class, don't take him! But if you want to learn in a real university level lecture, I recommend him :)
He is a very challenging teacher, definitely not an easy A but if your up for a challenge you will learn a lot. He hates people who give up, and if you show you're trying he will help you along the way (visit him during office hours). His class will prepare you for university level courses. Hardest class I've taken at occ but I learned a lot!
Hes difficult to students, yes, but it does help you to get your shiet together, study harder. Like him because he gave the tests/quizzes not by multiple choice, so you'll understand the material, also for partial credits. He does give extra credits but not alot. All u need to do is go read ur damn book. Should've got A but was lazy toward the end.
Was extremely rude to many of the students who had questions and didn't understand! I felt uncomfortable talking to him because he was so blunt and rude! Difficult class, his tests are really tough! Overall I would avoid him completely!!
Kuo teaches a 4 year university style class. This class is in no way shape or form harder than classes like calculus or physics, but it will prepare you if you can succeed. Do not take if you are more interested in, when the happy hour at Sharkeez is.
He's hard but helpful to extend. His lectures is nice and important for feild job in future.
I got an A in his class by reading the book. He's very condescending and swears a lot. His grading system is *extremely* subjective and inexplicable. He also has mistakes on his quizzes, and when you get them wrong as a result of having no available correct answer, he'll say you should have known they were wrong and told him during the test.
He thinks he teaches a University-type class but he really doesn't know what he is doing. I go to UCLA now and I haven't had a class like his. He is unorganized and his grading system is extremely subjective. Don't take this professor if you have other choices.
Pro. Kue never prepared to the class, he doesn't kow how to do the HW he asks us for, don't even bother to ask him any thing he will make you get lost! I'm an A student but I barely got a B in his class, you basically have to learn on your own because the class is worthless
If you want to learn the professor's personal stories, you will have lot's of fun, but you won't learn a single thing for the coming tests and quizzes, the class is a waste of time you have to do every thing on your own so stay home, read the book and explain to your self!
the best teacher imo. his exams are easy if u were paying attention in class. he explains using real life examples and if u see him in office house he will genuinely help u and answer you questions and understand the material
worst teacher in OC I'm an A student and I go to school to LEARN, you absolutely learn nothing in his class, he is a talker, don't ask questions because he won't know the answers.
It wasn't such a good experience taking his macro class, he only talks about general things that doesn't help at all in the HW or the exams! you have to go do every thing on your own! it was worse than taking an online class, avoid if you can!
Generally my grades aren't great but I took Kuo for macro and came again for micro with B's (to him is an A). He'll be happy to draw his C/D grade distrib for you. Hes such a vital pick for business/economics majors. Quizzes and tests are all written, and graded hard. He teaches you to be a better student. Take Kuo only if you enjoy the subject.
Only class I have ever gotten a C in. The class is confusing, tests aren't on what he teaches or the textbook...? He is blunt, rude, and he has a huge ego. He's very condescending and if you try to participate in class he will only use it to tell you that your generation is lazy and can't accomplish anything for themselves. Do NOT take this class.
You need to use your brain. He's not like most cc teachers, he wants to prepare you for a real university so he expects you to preform at a level which is comparable, an A in his class actually means something. If you want to take easy teachers & flunk out when you get to a big boy school, go ahead, if not take teachers like Kuo and thank me later.
What he talked about in class helps, and that's all, his tests aren't that related to what he talk about in class. However, tests and quizzes are not that hard if you read. for example, monopoly, just read about it in the text book and possibly online, you'll be just fine.
Don't take him unless you are serious about applying yourself to your education but, then again, don't go to college if you aren't serious about applying yourself. He is an excellent professor who genuinely cares about helping those who care and won't waste his time on those who don't. His tests are hard but reasonable if you read intentionally
I don't wanna say this but he absolutely sucks. The online site that he makes us use is so bad. I want you guys to avoid taking his class because that's such a waste of time and money to take his class.
His written tests are graded strictly, but his study guides and in class discussions make them easy to pass. His tests are curved, and his finals are take home. I took him for micro and macro and got an A in his class. Do the reading, show up to class, and you'll do fine. Don't take if you can't pass written exams.
Wasted my time, he is rude, condescending, unclear. In class he teaches about interesting and uses "real life" applications, but his tests have little to nothing to do with what was discussed in class. I'm disappointed. I'm a B-A student and I struggled daily with his error-filled online homework, and irrelevant tests. Do NOT take him.
Kuo is a fantastic teacher if you are willing to work hard. I was not prepared for the level of intensity, but quickly adapted to his style. Be very careful with your wording and clarity when answering questions in class, because he will make you look like an idiot if you don't know what you're saying. See him in office hours. Fantastic Class!
Smart guy, but basically goes in class and wings his lectures. I suggest you stay away if you're aiming for an A.
Dull, demanding, and endless
READ YOUR TEXT BOOK. His exams are fair. If you think one of the questions on the exam is "unfair", call him out on it. He gives back points sometimes. If find something unclear during his lecture, ASK HIM ABOUT IT. You will need to understand the concepts, not just memorize them. Do your HW too! The test is formatted the same way.
Read your book!! Not an easy A, tests are not based on what he teaches. Is not prepared for his lectures , literally makes them on the spot.
Dan is awesome. All these student on here complaining about his instruction or lectures are insane. This is a college class. You are expected to learn at a college level. Ask questions with thought and substance. Don't put it on Dan when you ask a stupid question and get a snide response.I'd do the same thing. Step your game up or go work at McD's
Daniel gives you a way about how to learn and use knowledge, not the knowledge itself. He is one of the most inspiring instructor in OCC, I m quite certain.
I really enjoyed taking this micro class. this professor was clear and concise. he is also straight forward. you do the work and you pass that's it. if you don't that's your choice, but it is college so... you know.
OVERALL MY FAVORITE OCC professor. A lot of people don't like him b/c he's honest. He'll call you out if you're not doing, studying or even learning right. He's really smart and if you pay attention and find the class interesting (like me) then you'll love it! He made me want to be an econ major!
He's a great professor and took him for both micro and macro. His lectures are interesting and he recommended everyone to read "How to become a straight A student" . Attendance is not mandatory but I would advise you to go to them because you gain more information. He cares about the students and wants you to succeed . He is straight up with you.
I've had Daniel Kuo twice, for micro and macro. Attendance was not mandatory when I had him. All his tests are online and if you decide to go to class he really tries to help you out with preparation for the tests! I did a lot of self learning but overall not a bad class, I got an A in both semesters.
Dan is seriously one of the most caring professors you can ever have. He spreads his wisdom about life to his students and makes you wanna care about school and life. Classes aren't mandatory, hw from the textbook, there's 15 online quizzes and he drops your lowest 2. He's really nice and will answer any question you have.
Attendance was mandatory for my class but it'll change each semester. Professor Kuo knows his materials so if you need clarifications, he is your person. The reason why people don't do well is that they don't read and they don't show up. Class gets quiet real quick so bring snacks and drinks to keep you awake. Grades are based on quizzes and hw.
Class is easy. You don't have to go to class, but it helps. He is willing to help you. He also gives second chances on tests. Do the homework. It will help you.
Signed up for this class but dropped out early on. He uses a paid online book and homework portal. It felt more like a way to get students to pay for him to not have to grade homework. Anyways I had some technical difficulties with the online homework and he was completely unhelpful. Seemed like he was going to be a problem so I dropped.
Take his class. He's got some intellect to share. Homework unlimited tries, test you can take 3 times, and its all online. you dont even have to go to class. no reason to not get an A. He also cares about what students think of him even though he says he doesnt care. Hi professor kuo
Online textbook and HW costed almost 100 bucks but it was terrible. The website had many technical problems and what he done was asking students call the tech support team. He might not be bad but his lecture was hard to understand and messy . I should take Jenifer Bailly in GWC, her class and Aplia online website is much much much better. :(
He is amazing! He is one of my favorite professors at OCC. He is very passionate about his subject, and his lecture is clear and interesting. Tests are usually a bit difficult since most of the questions don't come from his lecture. But he gives you extra credits. Take him if you want to learn real economics!
You need to do a lot of self-learning in his class. My advice is to read the books and try to understand on your own because itll help you prepare for the exams. 4 exams are online and homework too! Overall, he is a great professor. I enjoyed listening to his lecture.
All of his work was online, even the tests and final. He lectures and shows that he cares occasionally. Homework and tests aren't hard and that's all he grades on.
This class is so easy, every test and HW assignment is online and all the problems are found online too. He is really nice and if you want an easy A take this class. Also, attendance is not mandatory which is lit
He is great! I took his 170 and I am taking 175 this semester! Daniel is so nice and he really wants his student to learn sth. Attendance is not mandatory, but this is not an online class so better go to class and you will get the answer for your homework!
Super easy class :)
I never write reviews for any professor but Professor Kuo really deserves one! I was afraid to take his class since his class level of difficulty was pretty high but this was an easy class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but show up for help on homework. HW and exams are online and he gives you second chances on exams. I'm so happy I took his class!!
Wouldn't round my grade from an 89.96 to a 90. The website had issues with its forms like grinding to a halt when submitting answers, so if you clicked submit more then once it would dock you points counting it as a 2nd or 3rd attempt. Had I known I would miss my A by .04% I would have demanded something done about it but I felt on track for an A.
It was an online course so it gave me more advantage to study for this course but I would warn you that his grading is very tough. Homeworks and other lecture videos are only count for 5 or 10 percent which is very small. I got A's and B's on the tests but I still pass with a C. At least he gives you a multiple chance to retake. Still disappointed
I highly recommend not to take his class. A lot of technical problems, and he is not helpful at all. My actual score was 10, but it's graded as 0. It's fixed but happened A LOT!!!! Lecture is messed up, you need a lot of selfstudy. He isn't accessible. After the lecture, he leaves immediately even when there's few people want to ask questions.
Kuo is a great professor. he cares very much about his students' success. the only thing is he won't hand you anything. he teaches you ways to produce your knowledge instead of consume it. trust his advice it helps a lot. micro in general is a tough subject at least for me. focus on concepts not numbers in this class. he loves teaching
Daniel Kuo has to be one of my favorite professors I've ever had at OCC. Avoid this class if you are not interested in being a better student or an easy A. He teaches you more about the skill of learning and applies to the subject of economics but these skills carry over to any class. You're not required to go to lecture but it was always worth it
Take him you won't regret it
Avoid! Midterm and Final are 90% of your grade. Tells students to visit office hours but is very unapproachable. I took him for Micro and wasn't a fan of his teaching style (I stopped raising my hand after the 2nd class meeting, he'd just belittle everything I said) but finished because the grade breakdown was fair. Now he doesn't even have that.
Wow! This man should review his standards for teaching and especially grading. Seriously! In the middle of a pandemic, he decides that two exams will make up 90% of your grade and miserable 10% will come from homework that you actually have to put a lot of work in and he says he doesn't even look at it. Don't get me started on his Zoom lectures!
Okay, the professor does care for his students, but his grading policy is horrible honestly. His exams are worth 90% of your grade and homework is worth 10%. WE ONLY HAD TWO EXAMS. This means if you have one bad exam, your grade is literally down the drain. There's literally no room for error. The work isn't that hard, but he's really inconsiderate
Kuo knows how to run a class though canvas successfully. But during lectures he goes on unnecessary rants, lashing out on how students have behaved in the past, giving off a really unapproachable vibe (but participation is key!!). Exam questions are very different from the class material and lectures, I learned by reading the book, it saved me!
Don't listen to reviews before the Fall 2019 semester. He recently changed his class to avoid being the "easy professor". Graded on 2 MC exams along with some pretty hard HW, worth 10% of grade and takes a bit of time to be done properly. Tests are 90% of grade. He constantly changes criteria every semester from what I hear. Textbook cost a lot $$
Choose a different professor for your econ. Makes class unnecessarily hard to compensate for being too lenient in the past. Is passionate and knowledgeable about economics.
Assigns lots of homework, but it's only worth 10% of your grade. The rest of your grade is the midterm and final. The class is set up for you to essentially teach yourself online. He's very smart and cares about Econ, but got burnt by previous students and took it out on this semester's students. I've never seen so many people drop a class before!
After completing my Homework and Essay's, Kuo asks you to prove its your work over a zoom meeting, and/or tells you to drop the class....... I DON'T RECOMMEND TAKING A CLASS WITH A PROFESSOR THAT DOESN'T GIVE HIS STUDENT'S THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, HE WASN'T CLEAR ABOUT HIS POLICIES UNTIL AFTER THE REFUND DEADLINE.
His homework is worth 10% and 2 exams make up 90% of your grade. I'm not gonna lie this is THE hardest class but I felt very accomplished after I finished with a B. If your major is Econ related or want to have a professor who will help you figure out the best way to apply yourself in life and school take him. If you want an easy A your outta luck
Don't ever taking this class or you will regret. The final is so hard. There're no extra credit in this class. Final is 30% and homework is only 10%. You have to purchase for an expensive book and learn from that. He'll not teach you anything. All he does is give you some feedbacks.
worst professor i've ever had i swear to god. avoid him like the plague. he was very condescending from the beginning for no reason at all. I have never rated a professor until now and he is just awful. don't take for your own sake.
The final is extremely hard and a lot of questions don't have in the textbook, which is the only source that you can learn. Don't listen to the reviews before 2020, he changed his style. So, trust me, avoid this class!!!
He was amazing teacher. Most of his class is self learning and his quizzes really test your knowledge and his essay topics are fun and open.
you cannot retake the final like the reviews in 2019!!! I'm trying hard and get an A but the final drop my grade to a B.
Dan is an awesome and easy going guy with a deep passion for economics. I took his class over the summer for six weeks and despite the condensed nature his grading was clear and the work load was completely manageable. If you are truly interested in expanding your knowledge and challenging yourself, I strongly recommend Professor Kuo.
Terrible. Got a C for this class event though I've done lots of homework. Tests are super hard, avoid him.
He no longer wants to be known as the "easy economics professor' so his approach to this is make the exams harder than they used to be. He uses the hell out of proctorio so be aware of that.
This was class was taken during Covid. He takes a very hands-off approach and makes exams much harder than they need to be. I'd honestly avoid him at all costs because he says he tries hard for his students to succeed but literally provides no advice nor assistance whenever asked. He failed a student that was .1% from graduating. Stay away.
Teacher is awful. Unless you have to take an econ course and his is the only one left do not take the class. He reposts Khan Academy videos as helpful content and is extremely hands off. You are better off learning macroeconomics from literally anyone. Just watch the free Khan academy videos on your own time. Easier than this class.
Do the homework if you want an A(80%) in the class so you understand how to write for the written final (your grade will be a B if you don't sufficiently pass the written final). If you want a B(70%) go ahead and do the quizzes. This professor is alright if you're good at teaching yourself, lectures are good and I recommend going to class for them.
Great guy, and I loved the readings. I should have attended the lectures more often---but so long as you read the book and ask questions, you should be able to pass. Make sure you're prepared for that written final.
Was having mixed feelings, and he was great. Do the HWs to be prepared for the written. After passing written with min. 80% satisfactory, then the grade will turn to A, also optional test. No extra credit. Lots of information and indept explanation if you attend his lectures. Very hands off so always read ahead. Easily contactable outside of class.
"Horrible" is an understatement: the only source of information is the textbook and the confusing answers given by the professor that don't assist with vaguely worded exam and quiz questions. Success is based on your ability to memorize textbook diction that even the professor fails to use. Don't take this professor for major OR elective credits :)
The professor pretends to be easy to reach, however, anything you ask him, he will try as hard as possible to confuse you and talks down on you. The best example is what he defines as "cheating" for papers: if you "write better than he can," you're automatically cheating and if your writing is unsatisfactory, you didn't read the book enough.
Dont take his course. Entire class grade depends on reflection papers. Daniel wont teach you & theres no zoom meetings, you just teach yourself. Best part about this class is that he's a tough grader, and will make you feel dumb by messaging you in all caps. I got a 7/10 on a paper and he allowed us to resubmit, and he didnt even change the grade.
Mr. Kuo is great and really wants everyone to do well in economics, took both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics with him and as long as you read the textbook and are good at reading graphs the quizzes are super easy. The homework is worth a very small part of your grade and you don't even need to do it to pass the class if you read the book.
Professor is a very tough grader. No extra credit. Does not round up.
After taking the asynchronous microeconomics class I do not recommend it. The only possible way to get an A in the course is to get an 80% on the proctored written final. Worst of all there is no teaching or modules from him throughout the course. He takes all info from the book so all you do is read 12 chapters of a textbook. Grades fairly.
extremely difficult and rude
This professor is so bad, I literally want to die HAHAHAHA. Please spare your time, do not take him. I am stressed out of my goddamn mind and he is so rude, so disrespectful and responds in an awful tone I can't stand him. He isn't helpful at all, just don't take him lol.
Do not take him. It is not worth your time. This class makes me so stressed and basically all your work you do in the semester doesn't even determine if you get an A in the class or not, it is based on the written final at the end of the semester. He doesn't teach, you basically just have to read the textbook and go from there... DO NOT TAKE HIM.
The class is confusing for the first half of the semester. He expects you to know the book front to back in the first half of the class. The midterm is tough but fair, and you will be fine if you practice. After the midterm, it is more lectures. Less reading homework. The final is easy, and if you practice you should get an A. JUST PARTICIPATE.
Professor Kuo gives great lectures but also how Econ as a field can be used to solve complex real world problems like racism & climate change + gives solid study/career advice as a former UCB student. Lots of independent readings to prepare you for the 4 yrs you'll transfer to. Taking him is a must if you're passionate about social science!
His grading is so weird. Even if you get an A on the tests it does not guarantee an A in the class. His lectures are ok but he seriously needs an ego check. He says there's "no such thing as dumb questions" and then you ask him to clarify something and he makes you feel dumb for not understanding. He's impatient and talks down to people. Ew.
I'm currently taking his class and his grading style is for sure confusing, the only way to receive an A in his class is if you complete the written exam( which is not mandatory), there's a discussion and a quiz weekly + 1 midterm and final. All quizzes and finals are open notes and you get 3 chances! I recommend his class, Super easy!
This professors grading criteria is weird and confusing, in order to get an A you have to take his confirmation exam and he wants his answer very specific. He has a big ego and needs to get humbled tbh. His lectures were all over the place and not really structure. Sadly occ doesn't have the greatest/kindest econ professors.
If I had a time machine to go back and not take his class I would. One of the worst professors at OCC
Professor Kuo is vastly knowledgeable and the material is easy. He values your success outside of the class, and his advice is sincere. Don't take his criticism personally, as he just helps you to become a more productive student.
He is seriously one of the chillest professors I have had. Not only did I learn a lot, but it was easy to keep a good grade in his class. Work is about 2 discussion posts a week, with a quiz every two weeks. He doesn't accept any form of late work, so just stay on top of stuff.
Very condescending to students
Professor Kuo is unprofessional and condescending. I took this class as a dual enrollment student online and it is clear he does not care about the online students. His emails are sloppily thrown together, he only assigns readings (typically 30-50 pages in 2 days), and makes typos on quizzes that make it difficult to understand the questions.
I took Macro and Microeconomics at the same time with Prof. Kuo for and online asynchronous class. You will be paying $80 for the online program to do homework. He makes generally condescending comments throughout the entire class through canvas. To get an A you are FORCED to do a paper on Zoom with him, which doesn't sound so asynchronous to me.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken, he needs an ego check. Thank god for hybrid, I only showed up in person on the first day and never returned. Quizzes are very poorly worded, you'd be happy to get a 70% on any of them. Also, an A is impossible unless you write an essay about a random topic in person, so don't even bother. Avoid him!
Most confusing grading system I have ever experienced. It was very fast paced due to it being an 8-week class. He is very reasonable but everything is practically self-taught through the textbook. The bare minimum to earn a B in his class is very easy but he offers an optional essay test to earn an A, you cannot receive an A without taking it.
Professor Kuo is a tough grader, but engaged students can succeed. The material is manageable if you read the textbook and use resources like Unstuckstudy ai to assist with study prep. Attendance is mandatory, so be ready to participate.
I had a 96% in the class until the written final which is mandatory to receive an A in the class. I checked my grade and I see I earned a B overall! I emailed him asking for feedback on my final, and he hasn't replied!!!! I love how my grade earned throughout the semester is just thrown away by one stupid test!
Daniel Kuo was the most confusing and misleading professor I have ever had. His grading style was so odd, He swore that the canvas grade was incorrect and that it would be fixed because every student had zeros that needed to be dropped, but somehow my final grade was lower? He swears by his syllabus grading guide that is extremely vague.
Professor Kuo is condescending and dismissive towards students. He encourages participation but talks down to you if you ask a question, making you feel dumb for trying to understand. He doesn't actually teach, you learn on your own. Overall he makes his class frustrating and unhelpful. Thank god for hybrid.
Very simple class. Grading is based on weekly quizzes and discussion replies. There is a weekly discussion where you answer one question and get credit on it. He encourages the use of AI to study. Weekly quizzes are simple, tests are somewhat difficult if you haven't been reading but as long as you keep up you should be fine. Very cool guy.
His lack of assignments means it's easy to have one bad test ruin your grade. It feels like his goal it to put as little effort as possible into the course. He literally says he uses ChatGPT to write his tests, he has no video lectures, and only has youtube videos other people made. I don't really know what he gets paid for. He didn't teach at all.
Please don't take this class. You basically have to teach yourself by reading the hard to follow online textbook and watching a bunch of random YouTube videos. No matter if you do all your homework and do good on your at home quizzes, if you do bad in one of the exams you will be stuck with a C. Save your money and take a different class.
Extremely hard exams. Please don't take his class if you care about your grade or GPA at all.
