I found him to be entertaining, and a good teacher, even if personally I found his manner of dealing with slacker students a bit unsettling at times. If you work your butt off, you will get an A. It helps to attend his office hours, truly.

I learned so much from this class about how to write a good paper. He's hard-I worked hard to get my A. You have to keep up with the reading. If you want a good grade, take your rough draft and go to office hours with enough time to rewrite. I think this guy is damn funny and I liked his class.

Ok I took Landau's class expecting a mediocre professor, and I came out loving this guy! He loves the Clippers so whatever you do don't dis the Clippers. I enjoy the fact that he calls everyone by their last name, and the fact that he does awesome impersonations of some celebrities.

He was cool to me. I mean he's funny at times and gave me grades i felt were better than i deserved. I learned alot from him and now will be a better writer because of him. And what's wrong with him calling you by your last name?

I liked him. He always made himself available after class for any questions. He would help fine tune papers. Yes he mades you work for it but he helps you if you ask. He does have odd style but I liked it.

Sometimes his condescension slips out,esp. for the sloppy slackers. Did not call anyone by last name. Gleefully uses The Red Pen. Does not inspire students. Seems like most in my class were too afraid to say anything out of fear of being embarrassed. Not Easy, but prepares you for University.

Some folks dont get that this is a College level class. He is by the book. I find him to have a great sense of dry humor. He does makes himself available for Office time..Use It!...Not an easy class, but I now know how to write my papers properly, which will help once I transfer.

I liked the guy. His class was not too difficult and he said what he wanted. He's funny too, i enjoyed being in the class. I would recommend him unless your a slacker then he will pick on you but its all fun and games.

He treats you as a college student not a minor so come prepared to class and you will do fine.I very much enjoyed his class!

The first few weeks I felt like he was a crazy condescending guy, but then I realised that he had a dry sense of humor and was actually pretty cool. Do some work, write a good essay and youll get an A. Its not that hard, you dont even have to do all the reading, just pretend like you did. Take it during the short winter session, itll be painless.

Um, this is not a class for slackers or slobs. He has standards to teach and uphold. Do The Work...Folks get real..this is what you will be doing on the University Level...that is--if you make it that far. His class is not easy, but it most definately help you write correct papers--for all your classes!

If the student comes to class prepared, s/he will gain plenty from the class. The instructor does a good job of helping even those who come to class unprepared understand the material.

It's a college class, not elementary school so of course he's going to be picky about the grammar and the essay in general. He won't let you just make mistakes and say nothing, he gets you prepared for a real English Literature class. He's very clear, gives advice, takes papers a couple days late, and is very reasonable and easy to talk to.

I got a B, but I was absent alot and late almost everytime. He is funny, the thinks he's funny. I would take him again but he doesn't teach english 1.

I've taken many English classes and never had any problems before. Extremely picky about writing. Treats students as if you're in elementary school. Required everything to be clearly spelled out - he grasps literal meaning but doesn't accept/understand figurative meaning (ironic considering he's an English professor).

He is very interested in preparing his students for university. As long as you come to class prepared, contribute to discussions in class, & make an effort to write decent papers, you will pass. He is always available to help you if you are having trouble. I was ill & missed a paper entirely, still got a B, b/c I had worked hard in his class. Cool.

Landau really makes you organize your papers the way they do in the textbooks. At times,he can be annoying because he makes you read poems and you have to pay attention to every little word, however, he does prepare you for other classes and for university.

landau is the real deal. he prepares you for university level english. he's interesting and has a good sense of humor.

I give prof. landau a 11 out of 10!!!! He is serious when it comes to showing respect like showing up ON TIME to class, actually SHOWING UP, and turning everything in ON TIME. Mr. D. Landau has a unique style of teaching. He is strange and sometimes funny, but he is inspiring. Come to class with an open mind and he will help you develop your writing skills.

It is a good class if you want to write almost perfect papers and get B's on them. He grades very hard and acts kinda akward in class. On a positive side if you are a serious student he challenges you and somewhat prepares you for future english classes.

As it has been said, he has a cynical and sarcastic way. Always go to his office hours and go over a draft with him. I believe that this helped my grade considerably. He is a tough grader which helps prepare you for university. I got an A and feel that I put in a lot of effort on all of the papers. *Not a good teacher if Eng is not easy for you.*

The better students tend to like him and his class. The weaker students not so much.

If you care about your education, than take this class. He will prepare you for college writing. He couldn't be any more clear in the way he teaches. He gets your attention with his witty jokes and comments. He encourages participation and makes it easy to get involved. He grades tough, but fair. Study and you'll succeed.

I took him for 21A and then again for eng2, and i must say I think hes a great professor. He's crystal clear on what he wants and if your nice to him he'll be nice back, its that easy. If you try bullsh*t your way through he'll rip you to pieces. He's the funniest guy on earth if you see him during his office hours. He helped me get into USC.

This is not a good professor for students who are not good writers or lack a solid grasp of the English language. Sarcastic, dry and a bit handsome. Participate in class, visit study hours and write COLLEGE LEVEL PAPERS and you can pass. Students that cry about how mean or hard he was need to realize that this is college. He is trying to help!

I took Landau a few semesters ago. Yes, he doesn't give out A's to all, but if you do the work, then you'll get a good grade. He's a cool guy, and will help you if you ask for help. Gives Very specific instructions and sometimes makes fun of students if not followed. Requires you bring the book everyday although no hw is assigned from it. Wants his students to Partcipate! Overall pretty fair class if directions are followed and can handle his rude comments.

He gives everything to you straight up! He makes those who aren't prepared that for college realize that they need to step their game up. He is very critical on the essays, but he has to if you expect to move onto 21B or transfer to English 1. I got to transfer to English 1 cause his wittiness convinced me that college can't be taken likely.

Daniel Landau is a very blunt, straight to the point kind of guy. If you pay attention, and don't doze off, you should not have a problem. He is one of the funniest, most entertaining professors I've ever had. His intentions are not to humiliate any students, but to repeat things enough times so that you'll write it down and remember it.

In this class, you get the grade you deserve. Give him a terrible essay and receive an even worse grade. He has a very dry sense of humor and many of his questions towards students come off as somewhat condescending. Albeit, I found his class entertaining. Work really hard (or just write really good essays) and you'll get the A.

I hated the first few weeks of this class. He talked a lot of negativity about chances of transferring and it was very discouraging. As it went on I started enjoying it more and more. He's funny guy and once you adjust to him. Overall he has good intentions and is very helpful. Visit office hours, write in the book, take notes, and you'll do great.

Pretty interesting teacher. I didn't put THAT much work into the course, yet still was able to get out with a B+. You can't BS him though; however, he's not that hard of a teacher...and really enjoy making his students feel worthless and stupid.

Great professor. Grade based on three papers and two in-class essays. Encourages class participation, which can help your grade. He is a tough grader and you need good writing skills, but he's clear on what he wants. Put in college-level effort, start papers early and re-draft a number of times, and you'll be fine. Funny/charismatic guy as well.

Very good teacher for the group of kids I was with. Made it very clear what we needed todo to be successful at SMC. He makes sure everyone in the class is involved which is important at this level. Taught us everything in the book pretty clearly. Also never had a moment in the class when I wasn't paying attention because of his crude humor.

His directions are very clear and he is a very down to earth and funny person. He makes jokes and everything but he is also a bit strict. Acrually makes the class a bit more bareable to be in. My best english teacher yet!

AMAZING PROFESSOR. I took him a year ago and never thanked him for his wonderful work. Do not take his class unless you actually give a damn about learning. He is "hard", but as others have said, his sense of humor is not one to miss. If you can make it through his class, you will leave being much less of an idiot than you were before.

I honestly think that the students who find Landau to be a tough grader are semi illiterate. He teaches the material VERY WELL and is also extremely clear about what you need to do succeed. Visit him during office hours! He'll explain exactly what you can do to improve your paper. And as other people have mentioned, he's hilarious.

Harsh grader! He's an arrogant, obnoxious, human being. He makes jokes that aren't even funny. I dropped his class last spring because he FAILED me on my first paper. I have never received an essay grade lower than an B. Every time I enter that classroom, that atmosphere is just horrible. Please don't take this dude. SAVE YOUR GRADE!

Just came across this page by chance after rating a different professor at this school. I took Landau, and I'm actually pretty surprised that all of these students hate him so much. I wasn't excited to take this class but Landau was a surprise. Very funny, and inspired me to do the reading. Grammar is no joke with this guy. If you take advantage of his office hours he wants to help you become a better writer. He has a zero tolerance for laziness. It really helps if you like the Sopranos and be ready for serious sarcasm.

I am dumbfounded by the poor reviews given for this professor! Dry and strange sense of humor for sure but by far my most favorite professor EVER. I got an A, and the funny thing is that I am a much better writer in class than out of class. I probably should have started writing the papers sooner. I got B+ on the papers but A on in class exam. I guess I got an A on the final. I really liked the poem we wrote about for the final.

Daniel Landau is the best professor I have ever had. He taught me so much more than I ever did while taking classes at a UC school. He really wants students to learn and think about literature in different ways. He also wants students to stop being lazy and work hard for their grades. Well, I got an A and so did my friend, and we learned a lot but he repeats the same things over and over. I guess some people needed that? But my writing skill improved a lot.

One of the toughest professors I've ever had, but def knows what he's doing. His humor is dry and an acquired taste, but is delivered with the intent of class participation. His constructive criticism is HARSH but super constructive if you pay attention. I started off w/ a D, worked my ass off and ended w/ a B. AND wrote better papers. Worth it.

I took Mr Landaus class last summer for English 2. Really fun class. Everyone got along, and it had a chill summer vibe. I learned alot too. Wish I had taken him for Eng 1.

The main thing about Eng 1 is the research paper assignment, he lets you write on any topic you want. You go to the library for an orientation so you know how to use the library's technology. I wrote about how we should be paying NCAA athletes a salary. I got a A- on the paper and a A in the class. He lets you work on your paper during class.

Prof. Landau is a true intellectual who deeply cares about his job. If you're serious about getting something meaningful and lasting out of college take his class.

Prof. L. is awesome, truly. I am a fashion major and I was nervous about the course but it all worked out. Why do so many fashion majors take this guys class? There were a few of us! Show up, do the reading, you will be glad you took his class.

Easy A

Three short papers, two exams, not that much reading. A play, a few short stories, and poetry. The poetry unit wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Actually was OK.

Granted, he prefers the students who act like they're ready for college. That's true. If you can't do the reading he assigns, it could be difficult for you. If you act like it's middle school, then yeah, stay away.

If you are serious about knowing how to write for all your classes and even on the job, this is the professor for you. He knows his stuff. I took him for English 1 and 2 and now I am at UCLA, and I was able to "hit the ground running." Yes, UCLA is more challenging than SMC, but thanks to Landau, I know what I'm doing, writing-wise.

My favorite Professor at SMC. He really cares for students to learn. Show your effort during the class. He is not judgmental and lets students to express their own opinion. Always available for office hours and will help you with the course. He is very respectful and inspiring person. Highly recommend him!
