the class is hard and you have to read a lot but you learn so much. professor lind is very smart and very funny and a great teacher. just pay attation, read alot and study for the exams and you'll be okay (always do the extra credit assignment)
lots of reading, but interesting class. makes it easy to understand.
Greate professor, polite, on time, effective, efficient, this guy is serious about teaching. This class is not racial, however, if you don't want to learn about white oppression, I suggest you look elsewhere. Lots of USEFULL notes, OPEN note quizes, EXTRA CREDIT (if he like your class) GREAT CLASS.
This is the best class and the best professor ever. If I had to take this class with anyone else I would not have enjoyed it as much. This teacher actually teaches you stuff...he has a wonderful attitude also. TAKE HIS CLASS!
This teacher is fabulous and anyone who has the opportunity to take his class is in for a treat, and a new perspective on history and life!
Best class I had all semester. I got so much out of it. Take good notes and read what he tells you to and you'll do fine. He's not easy but very exciting, makes you think. One of the few classes that you will always remember. Teaches ethnic tolerance and understanding, who couldn't use that?
Good teacher. Lots of reading and note taking. (over 130 pages) Quizes are hard, but open book. Teacher is passionate and very personable. Do not feel overwhelmed. If so, talk to him. By the end of the semester, he gives you extra credit and makes life easier for those who are interested and stick it out. I recommend the class.
dont take honors! basic ethnic studies is a lot easier. take honors if you want every word criticized and no freedom in writing
I actually wanted to go to this class. This teacher is amazing I learned a lot. He is very serious about what he is teaching and is enthusiatic about it. TAKE NOTES and study and you will pass. I would recomend this class to all!!
great teacher
i dislike how he gives too much reserve reading. he should atleast offer the reserve stuff online. it would make accessing the material easier.
He's a great teacher. You have to read a lot but the quizzes are open book. For the midterm and final, he gives a study guide; just study the guide and you'll be fine.
Lots of notes, but the tests and some quizes are based solely on notes. The other quizes, he tells you what to read before hand. Very knowledgeable. Great teacher.
he talks pretty fast during lectures, so pay very close attention and i would even recommend using a tape recorder for his class. also, DO THE ASSIGNED READING!! his tests are tricky, so read and re-read if necessary.
A great teacher, but his class is really tough. He uses trick questions on his tests, and the research report is hell. Otherwise, a nice guy.
His class is pretty interesting. He talks very fast and gives out alotta readings. Be sure to read, and most importantly, TAKE GOOD NOTES!! Don't procrastinate in his class. It's alot of work. He gives out a study guide for the midterm and final, so no worries =)
TAKE NOTES! 1/2 quizes are open book and are from the notes. other 1/2 are from the reading. He will review before the mid-term and final (if he likes ur class).
I hate history..but Lind definitely captured my attention and I learned ALOT in this class. His lectures are long winded. He gives study guides for tests & final and even goes over the essay questions (quizzes and tests are strictly from notes & reading). He's pretty strict, but talk to him, participate in class and do the reading.
Make sure you don't miss a class. If you do the work, take good lecture notes, and do the reading, you should do well. The best teacher by far I've had at Cypress. I've learned so much about history's ugly past completely free of sugarcoating from Dr. Lind. If you can get through this class, you can get through any class!
DO NOT miss a class. Every class is interesting and full of knowledge that will definately be tested. Tons of note-taking I mean you better pay attention and lots of reading! This teacher is awesome tho and I will never forget him. He is funny, approachable, intelligent, and very passionate about what he does. GREAT CLASS GREAT PROF!
Very interesting class!! A bit of hard work though. You have to read alot, and MAKE SURE YOU ATTEND EVERY CLASS because every info he talks about is essential for his test. Grading is very fair and pretty easy, just a lot of reading.
Mr Lind keeps your attention throughout the entire lecture. There wasn't one class where I felt like falling asleep. But he may be a little tough as a teacher if you are not on top of homework assignments and studying for quizes/tests.
Do not ever miss a class and you will do well.
HE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER!! YOU ARE NEVER BORED!! you have to be at every class because you need to be there because it will help you on the exams. There is a lot of reading and you have to study really hard for the quizzes/exams. But you will learn a lot you just have to take the class seriously!
AWESOME TEACHER and believe everyone when they say GO TO EVERY CLASS don't miss cause you will miss out on something important very hard but always willing to assist you if you need it LOVED the subject and very interesting... lectures didn't feel like lectures felt more like a story based on a true story great guy
great teacher....he is so smart
He talks really fast so that makes you think twice about being in his class, but really he is not hard at all.he tells you what you need to study.he is a very different teacher but keeps you awake in class.hes an ok teacher.
i emphasize this...u have to attend ALL his classes cus he has new lectures EVERY CLASS. miss 1 day and u will miss A LOT. also, he talks fast...not really fast, but fast. the good thing is he's really helpful; he will repeat if u ask him to and he's really nice. i got F's on all of his essay quizzes and still ended up with a B. i recommend him
Professor Lind is a great teacher. If you want to learn the true meaning of culture hatred, then take this class! You will not regret this! See how America tends to forget its past, and how you can teach others. You will learn about American Indians, African Americans, Chicanos, and Asians. This course should be mandatory for all students.
He is brillance in it's rarest form. he is helpful and wonderful. You will do great and u will retain what u have learned ;)
great teacher

Several dropped. It was a tough class for all of us. I took his once a week, every Friday class. A lot of notes! You take notes by writing what comes out of his mouth. Write fast. The better notes you take, the more likely you'll do well on the open note quizes. He assigns a lot of reading too. However, I didn't read anything and ended up with a B.
Lind is a very good and interesting teacher. He is very ethusastic. Overall the class wasn't too difficult. Lots of notes, every class i had at least 2 pages of notes. write quick and summarize. Also, make sure to keep up with the readings. I got an A in teh class and i got all c's and b's on my quizzes and c- on my project. do the extra credits!
Very organized with notes and book readings. Is a mixed black and very against whites because of the background destruction they have done in America. Looks a lot at the negative and has no positive side to what America has been brought up to be. I see he wants to respect and share kindess to the indians, hispanics and all kinds of minority culture
Awesome teacher! He cares about the subject and the students. He offers help if you need it. Makes the lectures interesting and not boring. There are lots of notes. Attend every class, do all of the extra credit and you will do fine.
i didnt like the way he taught.ive never had a teacher that actually made me feel stupid.i tried really hard in his class hopefully i did well but if not i definatly wont take it with him again. NEVER AGAIN!
Prof. Lind was very clear in his lectures, and charismatic. It was very easy to pay attention. The reading does require some time and effort, and the tests are worded a bit tricky. Reread the questions, and don't ever miss class. The lecture is everything when the tests roll around. You don't want to be missing a word he speaks in your notes.
Difficult. Test have trick questions. Everyone is lying hes one hard cookie.
Prof Lind tells US history like it is and the way it should be taught. Sadly, people are still stuck in a fantasy world in which they think we live in a colorblind society and a nation brought up by great WHITE people. Lies. Learn the truth from Lind and stop being ignorant. Great teacher. Grades hard for a reason. Gives lots of chances to improve!
His way of teaching inspired me to want to become a better person. He is clear and funny at times. Yes their is alot of notes and yes their are alot of tests but most are open book. So if you don't pass that's kinda sad.
What a great class if you really want to learn. He is so funny & makes class interesting. As long as you go to each class and take good notes you will do fine. Tests from notes only, essay quiz from readings. Lots of reading but you can get buy without doing it all. He is always willing to help. Not an easy A but worth the B or C.
Professor Lind is difficult. That is his one flaw, if you see difficulty as a challenge. He is a wonderful lecturer, he will help you if you need any help, whenever. He responds quickly. You will NEVER be bored. He is serious about his papers, but you will enjoy this class. It is difficult, but when I was finished, I found it very rewarding.
*NOT A CLASS FOR SLACKERS. it is comprised of note taking and lecture, not much discussion. take good notes! he uses them for quizing and testing. not an easy A. i had a B avg but did all the extra credit and ended up with an A. great teacher but be prepared to actually make an effort.
The man is funny as heck! He makes class fun with his jokes and humor.
Excellent teacher! teaches a very thorough history of the US and the its cultural diversity, alot of reading, note taking, essay writing, but it's all worth it! I have come out a better person with a deeper appreication of my ethnicity, and the ethnicity of others!
Just study and you'll get an A.
Fast paced class. Not bad if you're used to loads of reading but he tells you what to focus on for quizzes. Strict lecturer but VERY entertaining & knowledgeable. Reviews for exams & gives out key points to hit for essay Q's but will grade hard if you miss 1 concept. Lots of EC in the end. Know basic American history & expect to work! GREAT CLASS!
He makes the class enjoyable in his lectures. Tons of reading and you have to make copies of the lectures. Not fun and expensive. I would not recommend his class if you suffer from dyslexia because his exams and midterm have a lot of "GOTCHA" questions! He does offer extra credit, but this class should not be this tough!
Prof. Lind is amazing. even though he seems tough the first day of class he is fairly easy. I failed more than half the quizzes and i still passed with an B. The main part of his class is the mid term, final and the paper (which is overly easy i BSed it) He even tells you what to focus on for the quizzes instead of reading all the chapters.
Mr. Lind is awesome! He shows genuine interest in this subjects and takes pride in teaching it. He delivers the content with clarity and answers your questions to the best of his capability. He tells you straight in your face that this course needs a lot of reading, and when you need to buck up. He is hilarious as well, which helps!
THIS CLASS IS HARD. he really knows his stuff theres sooo much note taking. very hard!! i got a C :/ and i really tried :/
Great teacher!!! This was the best class was truly one of my favorite classes. This is not easy class, you will definately have to work for a good grade. Prof. Lind knows his stuff and makes lecture very interesting. He's extremely helpful as well, he will help in anyway he can. Lots of reading and show up to class!!!
He was way too hard on the whole class and his cockiness made me hate going to his class. He sure likes to cuss and I think that is very unprofessional. If you an handle a teacher like this then by all means sign up for his class.
Professor Lind was very good, lectures are interesting and does go by pretty fast. Text book use is mandatory and is a lot of reading. Besides that, just make sure you always aware of your grade because the small MC and Essay quizzes does make a difference in the long run. Extra credit is is also available. Great professor.
Great class, great teacher. However, DO YOUR READING!!!!
Okay, so I took this as a night class 7pm-10pm. Prof. Lind definitely keeps the energy level up and makes the class rather interesting. He's quite a difficult prof, so don't slack off. Study, study if you have difficulty with exams. Also, this class will probably be easier if you have a background in U.S. History.
One of the best teachers at Cypress. This guys really knows his stuff, and transmits his energy level to everyone. Great class to take and learn. His class is hard, but once you're out you feel great because its a accomplishment to have learned so much. Those who rate negatively were most likely the lazy people.
This class is very hard. Lots of reading and he talks very fast. However, extra credits are available such as replacing lowest quiz and having final grade up one letter grade. Also, participation is important because it will determine your final grade. Not recommended to nonnative speakers.
Professor Lind will inspire you. He will frustrate you. He might even offend you. But the reality of it is that he is a progressively good teacher. He is alive, ecstatic, driven and passionate. However, reading is mandatory. He isn't the kind of teacher to let his students slack off. Oh no. He's the kind of guy who you will learn to love & respect.
his class is tough and don't expect to get by without doing the assigned readings, but he is the best instructor i took at cypress college. he is so passionate and informed about his field that it almost made me want to switch majors! i highly recommend taking his class because you will learn so much :)
hes is a good teacher as long as you do the assigned readings and take notes in class. he has essay quizzes and multiple choice quizzes as well as midterm, and final. he has 2 extra credit assignments toward the end of the semester.
Very passionate about his lectures. To me, he made the class pretty fun. One thing though.. he talks very very fast and its hard to take notes. Make sure your notes are really good to do well on the quizzes. Other than that, he is an awesome teacher.
I'been here at Cypress College for 5 semesters, and so far Professor Lind is the best professor Ive had. He is very intense and passionate when it comes to his lectures which i enjoyed because it kept me awake and i had to be on my toes when it came to note taking. Just do the assigned readings and take very good notes and you will be fine.
If you only take one class in college to truly learn something, this is the one. Mr. Lind is a GREAT teacher. I have NEVER had a teacher that has taught a subject with so much passion.
Pay Attention to his notes!!!!! Don't just copy the term down tske down what he says after. In his Quizzes you have to have a through understanding of the idea or term. Take notes while doing assigned reading he assigns 2 but you never know what he's gonna pick. Passionate but very interesting class.Atend EVERY class. Hes super nice and easy going
He's an awesome teacher!! Very passionate about what he teaches. When I first enter his classroom, I thought the class was going to be boring cause I hated history, but he made the class very interesting to listen. Very hilarious on how he lectures. Highly recommenced him. Take his class. you will have blast.
If you want to know how it feels to have an amazing prestigious university college teacher search no further..this man belongs in a university classroom. Daniel Lind will inspire you, he will push you to your brink and you will walk out a better student then you ever thought you could be. Reading isn't to bad everyone that's complaining is either to lazy or not driven. Stay focused and always visit him during his office hours he will make sure you pass as long as you care about your grade to:)
Great professor! Very fair. Not difficult, but not easy either! Must read and do all the required work. Lecture notes in class are very important in getting good grades on quizzes & exams. MUST ATTEND CLASSES. Quiz about every other class. Had some interest in the subject coming in. Now I find myself passionate&relating to all minorities. No cells!
All you have to do is do exactly what he tells you and youll get an A. Reading and studying is a must. If you understand everything throughout the semester, the midterm and final should be easy to study. Most interesting teacher ever !
You gon' learn in this class. Got an A, but it came with hard-work, HARDWORK. I underestimated P.Lind, this man has high standards for his students and expects the best from them. I recommend not taking this class if you want an easy A, its seriously a handful with 3 different sources to read plus a research paper....
I am taking his class for summer and it is safe for me to say I enjoyed this class. I actually want to come to class for three hours each night, becuase I loved his energy and passion. You may feel like your a church getting preached at, but he doesn't blabber on about nonsense. He answered everyone question even w/out making you feel stupid.
A great teacher. Learning will happen in this class and an A can be achieved through hard work. Highly recommended.
Keeps the content exciting and interesting. Very engaging professor. Has a high standard and when he says it is a University quality class it's exactly that. It's not as nig of a challenge as every one warned but make no mistake if you miss your reading you will not do well on quizzes. This is a quality class. The professor is fun and hilarious.
This guy is the BEST teacher I've ever had. Yes, he is hard and yes his course is not an easy A at all but hey that's college! He said his course is equivalent to a UC course and he's right. I got lazy so I fell behind but he is SO passionate and I looked forward to every single day. I would take the course all over again because he's that good
This professor is by far one of my favorite. He makes the class go by very fast and is really funny. He is kind of intimidating, but when you ask questions, he is actually very sweet and will repeat things 100 times if need be. No question is a stupid question!
He is very charismatic and keeps your attention the whole lecture. His essay quizzes are difficult, but his multiple choice quizzes are open book/notes. Do not take him if you want to slack off & get an easy A! His class is taught at a University level and it can get really tough if you do not study or read! :)
He is a cool instructor however as other people below have stated, only through hard work will give you an A. He gives out extra credit 2 on films he shows in class and one essay on film critique. READ his readings cause that can really screw you over. His quizzes are 5 points each. The multiple choice are based on lectures and the text.
DON'T listen to the comments below. His class is ridiculously and unnecessarily difficult. He takes an interesting topic and focuses on small dull details. His essay quizzes require an absurd amount of reading for 5 point quizzes, and often don't show up on the tests. He grades papers looking for ANYTHING to mark off. Do not take this class.
Hes a very wonderful teacher. He grades very hard at the assignments, but come one its college.Daniel personality is caring person overall. He does give a lot of opportunities for extra credit don't be lazy!! DO THE EXTRA CREDIT IT WOULD HELP YOU.
Of all the teachers at cypress i have taken he is the best ! although this is not an easy class, if you do what your told then you'll have no problem getting the grade you want. I got an A in the class but with a lot of note taking, reading, and studying.
Professor Lind is by far one of the best professors at Cypress College. He made my time there unique and unforgettable. His classes taught me a lot, yet they are definitely not easy. As a Ivy League professor, he does a really good job at getting you ready for that transfer life. Not to mention he is always willing to make time to help you out!
He teaches the material well, I give him points for that, but his 5 point essay question quizzes require a ton of unnecessary reading that is hard to keep up with. He also talks to you as if you are dumb. He has called my class in particular stupid at least twice and talks down to us. If you can handle that every day then take his class.
He knows the subject well and wants his students to pass, but he can be condescending to them at times. I was yelled at for leaving class early due to me having to see another professor during her office hours for help before an exam (which was for my major). I was harshly scolded before he knew my side of the story.
Professor Lind is a really great Professor! His class was the best I've had yet! This man is straight up because he tells you what he expects out of you. His lectures are clear and if you have any questions make sure to ask him, he WILL help you either in class or in his office. Also, mostly does quizzes based on lectures and textbooks & 2 tests.
Anyone who takes any of professor Lind's classes will most definitely get some knowledge out of it. His lectures go above and beyond and it is extremely crucial that you takes notes! Very glad I took his class even though it was a challenge. Not an easy class, but worth taking.
He is a good person, but I had a bad experience because I was not ready for his challenges.
Honestly my favorite professor of all time. He's so incredibly passionate with his amazing lectures and his charisma and humor. This class was definitely eyeopening and enlightening, thanks to him! This class was tough though, lots of reading that's essential to pass. The final isn't cumulative, but still tough. I highly recommend the class!
Professor Lind is very inspirational and motivating. He is a great professor who actually cares about his students and enjoys what he does. He is a fair grader and he is very helpful when it comes to the mid terms, finals, and essay assignments.
I passed his class with a B because I procrastinated a couple times. He is really realy good during his lectures, everything is crystal clear. He is a tough grader though, so be prepared. Other than that he is very very good at what he does. Keep it up lind.
He most memorable professor that I ever ever have. I love attending his class and I would pay just to attend his class whether or not it is for credit. His class is like a great inspirational story time. On that note, he expects you to remember his stories from head to toe for the exam.
He is probably one of the best professor I ever had. The class can be very tough with loads of reading and quizzes, but he is very clear on what we need to study. He teaches with such a passion, you will never be bored in this class. His lectures are incredible, but make sure your taking notes. He teaches like how a professor should teach.
Very hard grader. Yells in front of everybody if you're on your phone or sleeping. Quizzes require lots of useless reading, most of which is not even on the quiz. He grades everything subjectively, all quizzes and tests are essay questions. Ridiculous how much he makes you over-read/study for such an easy subject. Would not recommend.
THE best professor on this campus. He is smart, witty, engaging, KNOWS his subjects. Amazing lectures. Get ready to take a lot of notes, which you will need to pass exams. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. You need both texts AND the reading from the library. Tough grader on the essays. Take notes, read: you will pass the class.
Daniel gives interesting lectures! However, I dislike his grading policy - 25% quizzes, 25% midterm, 25% research paper, 25% final exam. I'm being graded entirely on my test performance. Quizzes/tests aren't cumulative, but they have tricky questions. You must have good reading and listening skills to study well! I don't have those, and I got D+.
His lectures are amazing. He is so interesting you wont want to miss class. With that said dont miss class bc the notes are long and detailed and you need them! He makes you work a bit for your grade but it is college right? I would def recommend him. There is an essay due at the end of the sem. about 5 pages.
His class is interesting but it's hard. I read 20+ pages from a textbook per night to study for a 5 point essay quiz. I got thrown off by confusing test questions (answer looks correct but it's not). I did 1,700 word extra credit essay and got no credit for MLA format mistake. Note-taking is crucial for quizzes. Same quiz questions used on finals.
Great professor, very helpful, fun on giving lectures, essay writing is easy if you READ one chapter a week. Most quizzes only requires just studying the lecture notes. 2 extra credit assignments and 1 assignment to raise course grade by one letter. Not hard at all, too many lazy, confused students in my class.
Worst professor I've ever had. Lets you out late almost every class, and penalizes you if you can't stay the extra 10-40 minutes (note to Lind: students have lives outside of class). Very egotistic and assumes all of his opinions are the right ones. If you're even the slightest intellectual or analytical, prepare to do a lot of eye rolling.
If you don't like to read history stuffs for 2 hrs every night, don't take his class. If you love to read history, be prepared to take his confusing, brain-wrenching exams with tricky questions that'll make you rethink about time and efforts spent on reading
This is a tough class to sit through. You must be really interested in this particular course in order for you to be able to enjoy it. If you are looking for an ETHS general ed course, I would recommend ETHS101 instead (material is on diverse groups)
Professor Lind gives interesting, long lectures. He grades the exams and quizzes thoroughly. You must read for about 1 to 2 hours almost every night if you want to pass his class. Doesn't go out of his way to help you and you must attend class to pass.
Daniel Lind is strict. He'll yell at you if you email him through phone. He'll yell at you if you try to leave class early. He'll yell at the whole class for failing the essay portion of the final exams. On top of that, he requires 2 hours of thorough reading per day in order to pass the class with a C. He gives nice note lectures. Period.
He seemed very passionate of what he taught. He always worked hard to get everyone in class involved. He made the occasional joke that made the lectures not feel stale. He's willing to work with you through anything. Great teacher. Not the easiest though.
Honestly, Im not the best student out there and this class was difficult because he actually makes you work for it. He gives many quizzes which you HAVE to do the readings in order to pass and his tests are pretty straight forward from lecture notes. His lectures on the other hand are amazing. He knows his subject and makes them interesting.
My FAVORITE class taken at Cypress! Professor Lind is so inspirational, you can definitely see his passion. He makes the course so interesting. Be prepared to read for quizzes and pay attention in class. Honestly, I missed a quiz or two but still walked away with an A in his course. If he taught more ethnic studies classes, I would take him again.
Professor Lind is a force to be reckoned with. Piece of advice: make sure you read, pay attention in class, take bomb notes, and do your paper early--something I didn't learn ahead of time. You'd be surprised how much work it is to write a paper in his class. Lind's lectures are extremely interesting, and he keeps the class engaged.
Professor Lind is one of the best teachers I had. Although he's strict, he's extremely passionate about the subject. A lot of necessary reading that he uses for quizzes, and his lectures are long and heavy, but you learn so much. Would recommend him to anyone that is ready for a challenge. Follow his rules and participate and you'll have fun
If you're a white dude like me, prepare yourself for the wave of white guilt he will pour over you. That said, his lectures are meticulous while interesting, quizzes don't account enough for how much reading is required for them, and he will scream at sleeping/texting students. Paper is extensive, tests are tough, makes you work. I got a B.
Professor is hard of hearing so many students' questions went unanswered from miscommunications. Professor is extremely loud. 3+ hour lectures for evening class. Left with a headache every time because of the loud lectures. However, professor is extremely passionate on what he teaches, very prepared for each class.
to be honest he is the most strict and annoying teacher on campus! he wont let anything literally anything slide by. You dont know your final grade till 4 weeks after the semester. believe me he is not the a good choice.
Lecture heavy, 4 pages of note each class. Quizzes are off reading which are not that hard. He gives only 2 tests, midterm and final, but he makes you study 100 events and on the test there will only be 25 questions, then there will be an essay which is HARD, makes you study for 3 essays and will not tell you which one he is picking.
NO HW! Don't miss class. Take good notes! Personally, didn't read the mcl./takaki books but @ least twice had to refer back to them. READ the ch.'s & gateway readings he assigns for the QUIZZES. There are 10 quizzes: 5 mult.(open note) & 5 essay. Not hard but read/study! The midterm/final are 1/2 half multiple & 1/2 essay. Study for both!!
Professor Lind is an amazing lecturer. His classes are so interesting I looked forward to going to them! He shows a lot of "tough love" and definitely makes you work for your grade. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. 2 exams, 10 quizzes and a final essay. You have to read a lot but can do without the text, I found them online!
Professor Lind is reasonable but very hard. He gives out 10 quizzes (open note and closed note), +1800 word essay project, midterm and final tests. There's lots of reading in this class! When he gives out extra credit, do it! He speaks super fast, so take lots of notes! My advice would be to take his class in the fall or spring.
Professor Lind may come off strict but he does it so you can focus. His lectures are really good. I enjoyed his class more than I had expected. You don't wanna miss his lectures. Don't skip out on the reading, he will test you on both the Takaki book and maybe 2 of the gateway readings. He will go over the midterm and final, so ask away!
Professor Lind is truly passionate about what he teaches. It makes class interesting and enjoyable. He's very straightforward, so you won't be tested on anything unfairly. Also, you don't have to read daily as he says you do, just read what will be quizzed on. It's still plenty of reading. And take advantage of all of the extra credit!
Prof. Lind can be percieved as angry, as he often yells in class when he lectures. His reading quizzes were challenging, as I personally didn't do too well on them. His midterm and final involved a LOT of information. He makes you work for your grade, yet if you put in the effort, he makes getting a high grade achievable. DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT GIVEN!
Pros: Great Lecturer Open to helping you during office hours Extra Credit opportunity to raise overall grade by 10% Cons: Lots of reading Must write down every word he says in class to pass Difficult Quizzes Difficult Midterm/Final Content: 10 quizzes Midterm Research paper (1800words) Final Comments: Lots of memorization to pass qz,midt, final
I'm a straight A student with honors and I can say this class is not worth taking. You will def fail if you don't put in more than enough time into it. I've seen more than half the class feel like they were going to fail. He lectures heavy and the tests are made for you to be confused. I spent more time in this class than any of my honor classes
One of my favorite professors. I feel like every professor should hold a high standard for their students like he does. People who complain are simply lazy and are used to "easy A" professors. Yes, you have to put in work but not much more than what you'd expect from a college course. Grateful for all the knowledge I gained while taking his class.
His lectures are very interesting and his lecture style helped me pay attention. Theres a lot of note taking involved but at the end it was for my own benefit, helped me a lot on my quizzes and exams. Readings were not that bad, he tells the class a certain chapter to pay attention to a day before the day of the quiz.
This professor really does make you work hard for your grade however it is not impossible. As long as you pay attention during lecture, you'll basically get all the answers for quizzes and exams. 2 papers and about 10 quizzes. He does offer extra credit opportunities. Keeps you engaged during lecture and as long as you read material you'd be good.
Enjoyed this class immensely, he kept it very engaging. Uses two texts, one is awful and one is easy to read. Kind of a tough grader but lots of extra credit opportunities.
The course consists of 2 4-6 pages a midterm final & about 10 quizzes The midterm & final are hard bc they each consist of memorizing about 40+ topics & he picks only 5 & the second part is to write an essay but to prepare for 3 even tho he only picks one bc u don't kno which one he'll choose but gives tons of EC that helps boost grade up
Challenging class but amazing lectures. Gives 10 quizzes, two tests (midterm and final), one in-class debate, and two essays. Read when he tells you to. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Make sure to take notes in class.
I suggest taking him for SUMMER. Very inspirational and hilarious. Lectures are amazing and quizes/tests are a bit tricky, but you are guaranteed a B if you do the bare minimum and an A if you do the extra credit.
He is extremely passionate about this subject and it shows. There is a lot of reading that has to be done to prepare for reading quizzes. The lecture is extremely heavy and contains a huge amount of information. However, he is very clear about what he expects of his students -- meaning if you want that A, you must work for it.
Wow what an amazing professor! Really passionate about his teachings, it'll resonate with you. He makes sure you won't remain ignorant after taking his class, so be ready to actually learn. He's an endless source of information, and really cares about his students. My advice, pay attention, actively listen, and do the work you'll be golden.
This Professor is amazing I would recommend him to anyone. Do all the extra credit do all the assignments exactly the way he ask you to. Don't fall asleep in his class or be on your phone and you should pass with a easy A it only gets hard when you miss class and don't pay attention.
Prof. Lind throws out a lot of information at a fast pace, but he is very passionate about the material and tries to make it fun. These are primarily history courses, so expect lots of memorization of important names and events. Take good notes. That said he is very helpful outside of class if you show an active desire to succeed.
Lind is a gr8 teacher. A lot of ppl consider him to be very difficult but imo he is very straight forward about what he expects from u and outlines the finals very perfectly. He usually gives lectures along with slides that helps guide ur note-taking so you have all the important info for the test. He will also let u know what readings to focus on
5 MC Quizzes, 5 Short Essay Q's, 1 Research Paper, Midterm (25 MC, 1 Essay Question), Final (25 MC, 1 Essay Q). Write down EVERYTHING during his lecture! I highly recommend retyping your notes which helps later for his study guide! Also, VISIT his office hours & go over the MC Quizzes, its the same as the midterm and final! Plenty of extra credit!
Lind is one of the best professors at cypress. Hes funny, educated, and tell you how it is man. However, this class was very hard, he really makes you work for the grade, but by the end of the semester he gives ec opportunities that will help your grade. I highly recommend him if you want to learn and challenge yourself. Focus on the quizzes!
Lind is an amazing professor! He definitely makes you work for your grade but you won't regret it; it's such an enlightening class and the lectures he gives are golden. Lots of reading outside of class is also a major portion of the course and you can get by without it but it truly does enhance your learning experience.
DO NOT TAKE! He is a tough grader and makes you really work for it. His outside readings are just ridiculous he doesnt seem to understand we have other classes we need to study for nor does he seem to care. Every time he lectures I feel like a high school student being yelled at by an angry teacher. Although he is passionate at his job just skip.
Yes, his lectures are fantastic. But he demands university level papers. Very tough on grading. Like VERY tough. My brother is in a bachelor program for history and couldnt believe the amount of work needed for this class. For a 100s class he is demanding too much
truly a professor thats really passionate about what he teaches. as long as youve been paying attention to the lecture and doing the readings, all the essays you have to write are pretty easy.
Ridiculously passionate over flaunting a bare-bones lecture plan. You'll learn much more on your own. AVOID, unless you're insane, enjoy being talked down to, or like wasting your own time, or any combination of the above. If you enjoy unbiased history, you'll hate this course. Good luck trying to file complaints; he's head of his own department.
The most terrible professor I have ever had at Cypress College. Have plans? Too bad, you'll probably have to cancel with the amount of reading this guy makes you do. Plus there's no review or quiz on the reading, he just expects you to know. You miss one assignment, you fail the course. If you take Lind, good luck.
He is absolutely amazing! He makes you work for it but in the end, the knowledge you gain is worth it. And to those that study and truly understand the history, it is hard not to be passionate and opinionated about these issues. Take him if you want to actually learn.
please don't take his class if you want to receive a better grade. I took this class with three other higher level honor science classes and I had to work harder for this one more than all three of them. He is a terrible grader and his tests are basically all heavy essays. You have to read up to 40 pages in order to pass his weekly quizzes.
This class was long and hard because of the long lectures and heavy essays we had to do. All of the essays had to be 5-6 pages long and very detailed. It's important you read and pay attention to the material. We had 4 essays out of 5 since we ran out of time to finish the lessons. Besides this, he knows what he's teaching and is very informative.
I really enjoyed this class and thought he was an amazing professor with great lectures. His great lectures never changed but Ive never had a professor less understanding during a PANDEMIC. He is the hardest grader w/ his papers & I write really well. Even after communicating concerns or family covid emergency he does not care. Will give u an F
TERRIBLE, just TERRIBLE! Understandably we're in the middle of a pandemic, but he's always late to start his lecture, and goes over the scheduled ending time. No homework, no quizzes or exams - just a total of 5 essays that must have more than 800 words each! Often uses profanic language and talks down to students during lectures. DON'T RECOMMEND!
Amazing and very passionate professor, although, this class was definitely NOT what I was expecting. This semester I was stressed all the time because of his class. don't be surprised when he assigns assignments where it takes an hour just trying to understand the question.
What can I say about Prof Lind? Wasnt expecting that. Hes one professor youll never forget. He is so passionate about ES and KNOWS what hes talking about. Amazing lectures. The class itself is very time consuming and challenging. You will have to work for your grade! Five crucial essays. Follow along with what hes saying or youll drown.
Professor Lind is a really cool professor, his lectures are really good and helpful. Take notes and you will pass. Hes a tough grader so do the assignments right.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING this professor is super fun. About 5 big essays you have to write, including the final. This professor is super passionate about the material and is a blast to learn from. If you are an ethnic studies major, you cannot go wrong with him as your professor. His essays are pretty simple so make sure to read the material before!!! )
THIS CLASS WAS AMAZING! LEARNED SO MUCH AND PROFESSOR LIND MAKES IT INTERESTING. PARTICIPATE OR YOU WILL BE CALLED ON, FOLLOW THE PROMPTS AND YOU'LL PASS. GREAT CLASS!
Lind is super passionate about this topic. tbh i didnt all of the reading assignments thoroughly, but i learned so much just from attending his lectures. His lectures are mandatory, his assignments are mainly essays. It sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, prof Lind is a good teacher.
He is a Golden Instructor. He truly cares about teaching his students, allows and welcomes participation, & is a solid and hilarious guy. You are graded on 5 essays only. so read the Book His classes are so fun & enlightening. didn't expect to love this class as much as I did, and I thank the professor for always giving Amazing Engaging Lectures.
Don't miss his lectures!! Make sure to take lots of notes on the reading, lectures, and movies you watch bc that's what your essays will be on. He doesn't give hw, read the book!!, all essays are mandatory, and make sure to really the essay criteria (he's a tough grader). I think I really learned a lot bc he was so passionate about this subject
Professor Lind is passionate about his subject matter, but he does clearly emphasize his emotions when giving lecture. If you have the wrong opinion, you tend to be disquiet more. This Zoom class was easy, I pretty much slept through his entire course with little participation. I read very little and did the essays last minute and still got an A.
I honestly struggled in this class (I hate writing) but WOW he is extremely passionate about the subject and makes the lectures interesting. There are a lot of papers and I felt as though he was a tough grader but I got so much out of this class! Oh, and do the extra credit! it was the reason I ended up with an A in the class.
Professor Lind was great, he is very passionate about this course and it was interesting. I loved his class. Even though it was online, he was very engaging. He does not have exams but does have 5 essays. Reading is a must in his class. Do not wait until the last minute to do your papers. Overall great class!
Knowledgeable in what he teaches. Tons of reading assigned. No homework, but five essays. Takes forever grading the papers, be prepared to wait for a response. VERY HARD GRADER! He did offer extra credit. Sidenote, he cusses a lot, if youreasily triggered, do not take this class. I also realized fast that you dont have an opinion just go with it.
Took 129 not 101 but he gives good feedback and is very funny. He is also very approachable and helpful when you need it. No assignment or quizzes just essays and be prepared to read. Do not wait till the last minute, you won't like yourself and would regret it. I was a decent student and never scored lower that a 22/25 on the essays.
Lind is extremely passionate about the subject. Powerpoint heavy, lots of notes and assigned reading. He provides all the necessary texts so no need to buy a textbook. You are only graded on the essays, midterm, and final. As long as you follow the rubric, its extremely easy to get a high A. Try not to leave essays til last minute.
Professor Lind is a good professor. He's enthusiastic and isn't afraid to tell stories/history for what it is. To get a good grade, it's all about your essays. The directions are extremely specific --> use information from the textbook/films, don't gloss over concepts, and you'll be fine
He is golden. Honest. Hilarious. you're graded by 4 essays , a midterm and final which are also essays. you will not have to buy a book, he supplies all notes, but you should print. His lectures are Awesome, Entertaining,Funny, Real and he is such a bold speaker. No HW beside print& READ -highlight when reading and Pay ATTN in class! def Awesome!
Lectures are amazing- extremely informative and interesting! He's not afraid to be himself and add some humor. There's 4 papers which your grade consists entirely of. You must reference the book, films, and canvas readings. He states it on the prompt. Can't reference lectures so that makes them useless unfortunately. But he's an amazing professor!
Professor Lind is very passionate about what he teaches and it really shows in his lectures and it makes you want to listen. Assignments were just essays, some were quite challenging especially since Im not the best writer and if you didnt do the reading. Overall he was a really nice Professor!
Less than a week in between per paper, horrible with due dates and incredibly not understanding.
Get ready to write a lot! His lectures are interesting, but his essays require a lot of writing. Honestly its so exhausting. Im trying to save your life, so go ahead and take another professor for Ethnic studies please lol.
One of the most passionate educators I've ever had, ever. I wish I had more time to take another one of his classes before I transfer. While this class is assignment heavy, I've always found them to be intriguing and in turn, fulfilling.
He is a harsh grader & wants you to use the text in essays. When you use the text he will claim you copied & pasted it even when you quoted it
Professor Lind is pretty amazing! he is truly passionate about what he teaches. His class does require multiple essays. If your like me and hate essays DONT be scared. You will learn so much in his class that writing essays will be so easy. I learned so much in his class. I highly recommend this professor.
He was great. He is very passionate about his job, and it shows. I learned so much in class and although his class only requires 4 essays which are about 1,000 words each, his lectures and videos are enough to make the word count. He was a difficult grader and will always give 1 sentence feedback, but I loved his personality and recommend him!
Knowledgeable, Passionate, Direct communicator. Provides clear expectations and texts, reading, media, and instructions to CLEARLY state what's expected. Tough grader though !!! Open to discussion and encourages opinion and critical discourse. Participation is a MUST: Profanity is a bummer though :(
Mr. Lind has amazing passion for his teaching and he DOES make the lectures interesting and... That is about it. He will supply the reading for you if taken online and there is no homework, just quizzes and essays, but do not believe this means it's easy. He is easily one of the strictest graders I have ever had and it is unwarranted. Skip over him
fyi-took his class spring '21 so things might have changed. just writing this so yall know. class was all about lecture and him talking the whole time. when i had him, he didn't give out quizzes or anything like that but i heard from a friend that he started to have weekly quizzes. if i remember correctly, theres 4 essays and they're about the book
He is a very passionate teacher and there are times where he is funny. Beyond that there is a lot of reading to do which is expected but is not the reason for this rating. Its the heavy grading that goes into all the essays. Knowing and reading over the notes you take to take a 20 minute time limit quiz. Oh and btw a missing essay = fail the class
Daniel Lind is a teacher extremely passionate about the course he teaches, and it is very clear he cares about the topic at hand. However, passing his class was very challenging, for he takes off points from your papers without giving proper feedback. I believe for a three-credit class, it was not worth the effort and time.
Professor Lind really tested my writing this semester. It is a very lecture heavy course and he does an excellent job at delivering the information and is passionate about it. There are 10 quizzes but you get 5 extra credit assignments to make it up. There is a research paper, midterm and Final (which consists of writing). I strongly recommend him
This was supposed to be an intro class but was much more difficult. He is harsh on grading and most of my class was failing (we had a discord group). The quizzes are long and in depth on random videos. None of my counselors recommended taking this class or any ethic studies classes here at Cypress. I will be retaking this course at Fullerton.
While his class was challenging, the quizzes were passable as long as you were in attendance and took through lecture notes. As long as each question is answered, essays are passable. They were each given two weeks to turn in. The professor mainly looked for your voice in the papers with one of two one-lined quotes to back up your point.
BRUTAL GRADER! Entire class grade made up of 4 essays/1000 words and final essay/1800 words. Prompts are VERY dense, and even if you think you answered everything points are still lost. Feedback consists of one sentence telling you what you missed. Lectures are informative and he does get loud sometimes, knows his stuff very well tho and flexible.
The way he makes his tests and quizzes is stupid. He makes you read pages and pages of papers that were written for scholars and picks one tiny portion of it to test you on. He always tries to show that he knows everything and you know nothing. Can't miss a single day or else you'll miss crucial notes for tests and quizzes. Don't take him PLEASE!
If you have a busy schedule, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He doesn't post the slides for his lectures until much later, typically right before a major assignment. The main problem is that the slides do not provide ANY information, most of it is just spoken from him. So if you miss a day, you miss all the notes for that day. DO NOT TAKE HIM, he's a pass.
Great
Passionate and funny professor. But, he constantly bashes others' points of view. You wouldn't feel comfortable in this class If you had a different opinion than him. Lots of reading, writing, and quizzes. This class shouldn't be this time-consuming and difficult. Lectures were entertaining and informative to be fair.
Possibly one of the toughest classes I've ever taken. While he's hilarious at times and seems to really care for the subject, he fails to make a connection with his students, and listen to what we're asking. Not to mention the countless readings, only for a small portion to actually matter for the questions on a quiz or test.
101 ethics, this class is a GE, I repeat GE, the amount of essays you need to write and read is not fun. I take this "GE" class along 4 more class of my major 'Computer Science" in Uni and this class give me more headache than the others 4 classes combine. let me save u time, don't take it, register other professor is better, trust me.
he is very funny and hilarious! however, passing his class was a challenge and a half. I felt like I spent more time for this course (supposed to be an introductory GE course) than my actual STEM courses (engineering, math, physics, etc.). as someone else said, do *not* take his classes if you have a busy schedule and/or other important classes
I am here to get him some justice. As long as you attentively listen to his Zoom lectures, you'll be fine. His prompts ask for really specific answers, BUT if you can address all of them using some citation from the textbook, you will be just fine. Hes also willing to read and give feedback for your draft before submission. Great professor? Yes!
Good Professor but assigns too much work for an GenEd class. Lots of reading, an 2,000 word essay assignment, and tons of MC and EQ quizzes. Not to mention that the midterm and final require extensive studying. I would recommend taking another Professor for this class, or take some other kind of Ethnic studies class.
He's very passionate about the subject & funny too. Attendance and reading the assigned material is essential to pass as there are in class essay quizzes and online quizzes that will mess you up if you don't know the subject well enough. He offers multiple extra credit opportunities as well. Like others said, if you are busy, don't take the class.
This is a GE class, he is passionate about the topic but doesn't like other opinions. Even if you answer every question on the essay he doesn't give constructive feedback just points out what you did wrong and is very tough grader. Don't take this class if you are busy. Personally I should have taken this class with a different professor.
He's funny, passionate. But for a 3-unit GE class, I think 5 essays are a lot to do. We did 5 essays and 5 quizzes, a lot of readings, long videos (documentaries) to watch to write essays. Quizzes are about what he says in class, which means you can't miss any class or lecture video (he uploads them after zoom classes). Still, to me that's a lot.
Don't listen to these reviews! He's a great professor and you need to actually put in the work to succeed. Although he isn't very clear about feedback for the essays, he is willing to read your drafts before you submit them and yes, this class is challenging for a GE but it will prepare you for upper-level uni courses.
I only recommend if you have prior ethnic studies knowledge, not if you're new to it and are taking this as a GE. he's funny and hilarious, but grades the essays harshly. doesn't give good feedback, only points out what you did wrong. doesn't provide a rubric. expects you to already have American history knowledge despite this being an intro course
PROS: funny, hilarious, passionate. CONS: grades essays harshly, doesn't provide good feedback on essays, only points out what you did wrong (even if you answered all prompt questions), does not provide a rubric, does not post his lecture slides (which don't even contain any info to help understand the readings, only helpful info is spoken by him)
He is extremely passionate about his job and his knowledge about ethnic studies, you won't forget about his personality. However, his class isn't easy as you have to read a lot and then he will quiz you on a small portion of the reading you may not be able to remember. It was a good challenge, but it felt like a 5 unit class instead of 3 units.
Don't listen to these good reviews, they were most likely written by ethnic studies majors. He is funny, hilarious, and really cares about the subject, but assigns too much work for a 3-unit intro GE course, doesn't make a connection with his students, and is a harsh grader. Not for students with busy schedules. This is a 5-unit course in disguise.
Lind is passionate about ethnic studies and an awesome professor! He's a tough professor, but he gives straightforward instructions on ALL material! The class consisted of 10 quizzes, 3 major essays, and 5 extra credit opportunities. Complete everything in a timely manner, follow instructions, and you'll be fine. Would 100% take it again.
If I remember right there's only a total of 200 possible points in the class: 4 papers, 5 quizzes and one final paper. It was hard bc you had to really be prepared to succeed with each assignment. Mr. Lind is awesome though- hilarious, engaging, and prepares you for real college expectations. Pay attention & don't procrastinate, you'll be fine.
Lectures are amazing, I could listen to this man speak for hours. He actually cares about the subject, so it's not boring even when it's slow. You need to write down what he says though, so get ready to write FAST. You get better as you go, but NO COMPUTERS. You can write on a tablet though, I saw a classmate do that. He'll also listen to concerns.
Prof. Lind is very funny, hilarious, and passionate about the subject, however, he is a harsh grader and doesn't leave much room for student questions during his lectures. highly recommended if you already have lots of prior ethnic studies knowledge, but if you're completely new to the subject, so much extra effort would be needed to pass his class
PART 2 ... and an essay you have to write in class, and a final, formatted the same as the midterm. He provides a study guide for both. It includes 101 possible topics and 3 prompts, but he will pick 25 out of the 101 topics and 1 out of the 3 prompts for the test. Like I said before, YOU will have to work HARD to get a good grade.
Part 3 The way he structures the class may be too much for some, but it is designed so that you actually learn the material. It is not one of those classes where you can go by without reading or attending class and still get an A. Also, there is a research paper you have to do; if you do not submit it, you will automatically fail the class.
Part 4 Overall, Professor Lind, by far, has been the best professor I've had at Cypress College. He's passionate about what he does and you can see that with the energy he brings to class. He's engaging, funny, and approachable. When he lectures, it feels like he is telling a story.
Part 5 The way he transitions from one topic to another is done so smoothly that it makes the class go by quickly. I recommend that you take the class. It's challenging, but you're in college, get used to it. Good luck!
very funny and hilarious! quite a lot of reading to do, but not the reason for this rating. it's the nitpicky essay grading. even if you follow all instructions and answer every question, he will still dock points. grading criteria is vague, as he doesn't provide a rubric. but he is willing to read drafts before you submit, so check with him often!
when he grades essays, he wants to see: a proper intro, concrete details, commentaries, conclusion, reliable sources, etc. or else he will dock points, so this is like a combined Ethnic Studies + English course. might be hard for those new to the subject, but not impossible. study the book *before* his lectures to understand what he says in class.
the amount of coursework and his grading criteria don't align with a 3-unit course. very doable with enough study time but will be very time-consuming. this felt more like a 5-unit course. only recommended if you have lots of free time, not if you have a busy schedule and/or other important courses or priorities. but he is very funny and hilarious!
If you're gonna take Daniel Lind for Ethnic Studies as a Gen Ed requirement, don't take him. He's too harsh on grading. He picks out small portions for essay quizzes. He's also too strict for a class and if you use your phone, he's gonna yell at you to put your phone away. The research paper is 2000 words so get ready to write a lot.
Incredible and passionate lecturer, truly cares about the subject and answering questions. Although his class is pretty hard for a 3 unit course, as long as you take all the notes and read the chapters he assigns, you will pass. Doesn't have many assignments, the grading is only: 10 quizzes, 2 major tests, a 2000 word research paper with 8 sources
he's funny, hilarious, and passionate about what he teaches, but the amount of coursework assigned is unreasonable for a 3-unit intro GE course. earning a decent grade in his class felt like a challenge and a half. strict grader on essays, so be prepared to spend lots of time perfecting them if you want decent grades. felt more like a 5-unit course
for a 3-unit intro GE course, he is such a harsh grader, especially with essays. even if you follow all instructions and answer every prompt question, he'll still dock points and tell you what's wrong with it. highly recommended for ethnic studies or U.S. history majors, but not for others looking to finish the GE requirement (majority of students)
Very passionate about the subject, making learning a lot easier even for those not interested. There is also no homework outside of the readings. He wants to make sure you pass the class, even for the midterm and final if you ask he will detail everything he wants on the paper. Overall, one of the most fun classes I've taken. P.S. participate
10/10 for the enthusiasm, his lectures were long (this was a summer course though) but he made them tolerable and enjoyable. Unfortunately, he is a tough grader, and his mid-term and final exams made my grade go down a bit, but if you just put the work in, it's a pretty easy pass. No homework just quizzes every week and then the mid-term and final.
Don't get me wrong, I can tell he loves what he does since he puts passion into his lectures, but to be honest, for a 3 unit course, he treats this class as if it were an advanced course at a UC. There is too much reading, and don't get me started on his essays! He will want you to visit universities to use their library for your sources!
8=========D
Terrible grader, the worst experience I've ever had with a professor. NEVER take him as he will make this supposed to be easy course into one of the hardest courses you'll ever take. STAY AWAY FROM HIM.
Prof. Lind is funny and passionate, but the heavy workload and strict grading make this feel more like a 5-unit course. Definitely doable with lots of studying, but not recommended if you have a busy schedule. Unstuck AI can be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
this "intro" class is NOT what it seems, do NOT take this class if you have a busy schedule. he's funny and hilarious, but he grades essays strictly and wants his students to go to other college libraries for sources! I'm taking intro, not Ph.D, chill out! 101 courses are supposed to be surface-level, not in-depth nor this much time-consuming!
most intimidating experience I've ever had in an undergrad GE class! intro courses are supposed to be surface-level, and NOT require ANY prior knowledge of the subject, but I'm sure he raised the difficulty for no reason. the equivalent university courses are easier. there's more reading and writing in this class than in ENGLISH class! STEER CLEAR!
yikes, watch out! this might appear to be an intro/101 course, but he'll go out of his way to ensure this'll be the hardest class you'll ever take. lecture slides only contain topic titles, important info is only spoken by him. doesn't leave much room for student questions. films shown in class are random and don't help with understanding concepts.
if you're looking to finish the GE requirement for ES, AVOID his classes! while he is funny, hilarious, and truly cares about the subject, his grading practices are brutal and unjustified! makes you work too hard even for 'C' grades! there's a huge disconnect between what he wants and what his students can do, especially for a class with no pre-req
He treats this INTRO class like it is a university level class. He expects more than students can handle and barely has an info on lecture slides so you have to really pay attention to what he is saying to have decent notes. There are quizzes every week. He is however passionate about the subject and funny, but has tough grading and lots of reading
he is funny, hilarious, and truly cares about what he teaches, but SUPER strict on grading essays. when he grades them, he doesn't provide ANY constructive feedback and only tells you what's wrong with it in one sentence at the top. AVOID if you have a busy schedule! (good reviews are likely from ES students with lots of prior knowledge)
this man should NOT be allowed to teach the INTRO courses, and is better off only teaching the advanced ones. he treats the intro courses like advanced ones anyway. proved to be a know-it-all, by assigning page-after-page of readings, and quizzing us on only a few paragraphs of them. lecture slides are USELESS, important info is only spoken by him.
you'd think this course is easy since it's intro/101 and there's no pre-req, but NOT WITH HIM. you're totally in for a rude-awakening! I spent more time studying for THIS class than each of my STEM courses (chem, engineering, math, physics, etc.). he's by far one of the STRICTEST essay graders I ever had, it's unjustified! EXTREMELY time-consuming!
he doesn't understand that his students have lives outside of his class and other classes to study for, nor does he care. holds his students to such a high standard, assigns WAY too much work for a 3-unit intro GE course, and grades too harshly. can't file complaints since he's the chair of his own dept. the good reviews are likely from ES students
Passionate lectures that are fascinating, but KILLER tests and LOT of reading. There will be in-class essay questions/at-home MCQs based on the reading/lecture. Taught like a 250 level class, not for non-ethnic studies majors. ~4 ECs offered. Strict on no devices. MCQs/EQs: 50 pts total. Research Paper, Midterm, Final (non-cumlative): 50 pts each
he totally was gatekeeping! he didn't have a single ounce of mercy and graded brutally. this is supposed to be an undergrad-level intro course, but he treats it like a Ph.D. one! almost the entire class time was him talking, without leaving much room for student discussion and questions. audio-record him talking! lecture slides don't have ANY info.
He is passionate about the subject and you are guaranteed to learn new parts of history that will change your perspective on certain topics. If you are taking the class just to fulfill your GE requirements or if you have other responsibilities, I would look for another professor. Otherwise, I highly recommend doing ALL the extra credit.
I don't understand the hate and complaints. His lectures were so informative and very funny, I learned so much! Quizzes are based on lectures or at-home reading which is one chapter every other week. He will tell you what to focus on in class. The final is around 25 questions with an essay question he outlines in class so it's all memorization.
hate and complaints because what it takes to pass his class eats up WAY too much time. signed up for a 3-unit intro // 101 GE course, but was met with someone who treats it like a 5-unit advanced one. this class is good for those who already know a lot about ES, and just needs to take it for credit, but not anyone else, especially not if new to ES.
to those who wanna finish GE requirement, RUN AWAY from this class! he's so strict, yells at students using phones, hates others' opinions, and gives back bad essay grades like candy, which are only based on AI detectors. he said he'll give 0's even if 1% of AI text is detected. he's also dept. chair (I think), so good luck tryna file complaints...
please don't take this class if you just wanna pass it and move on, it'll mess you up if you don't already know lots about the subject. I think he forgot that this is an INTRO course. worst mistake I made: I took this class with other STEM courses (engineering, math, physics, etc.) and I had to work harder for THIS ONE than the others, enough said.
somehow managed to turn an easy intro course into such an extensively hard one. doesn't care enough about students being busy with other courses and just keeps on assigning long and tedious readings only for a tiny part to be on quizzes. provides a list of possible topics and essay questions that'll be covered on exams but won't tell you which ones
If you get this professor for ETHS 129 c don't just walk, Run you would not believe me if I told you home much reading you have to do for this class, it will make you cry and being in the class is not much better he makes an hour something class feel like a year. Get out while you can!
Exceeds classroom time not considerate of classroom time, more talk then teach. Specific grading when not necessary even when mentioned the grading was lenient in the essay quizzes. Good individual.
I was failed for no reason. I email the professor and never got a response back. Interesting and engaging class with good content, just sucks that it doesn't have a caring professor. Not good with technology.
This class is definitely on the difficult side compared to other classes at cypress. However, the material is not difficult its just a lot of information. Prof Lind is a great professor. If you are hardworking and actually interested in learning something, take this class. If you are lazy or just are looking for easy classes, do take this class.
I was a little surprised at how much was required for this considering it is supposed to be an intro course but I did enjoy taking this class. If you want an easy A do not take this class. Please do not do what I did and take the once a weeknight class I wanted to die but he's very knowledgeable and I learned a lot. STEM majors stay away
This is a 100-level course, but he treats it like a 300-level one. Doesn't understand or care about his students having busy schedules and assigns LONG readings and a 2,000-word research paper. Unless you want to conduct research and teach this subject for a living like him, DO NOT TAKE, especially if you're in STEM. It'll eat up TONS of your time.
Extremely difficult class. You will have to dedicate a lot of time to reading the textbook and various assigned readings. 2,000 word research paper and many quizzes determine your final grade. Somehow this ethnic studies course was the hardest I have taken during my time in college. An A is possible if you dedicate a lot of time to studying.
Super passionate lecturer + cool guy, but he prides himself in creating a rigorous "university level" course (his words). You'll learn a lot, but it's harder than typical intro ethnic studies course. No homework/assignments, so grade is based wholly on quizzes, midterm, final, and final paper (+ a lot of weekly readings which seemed unnecessary).
This was the absolute hardest class taken in my life, not only was he very strict in grading but he was also rude and practically yelled at me in front of everyone on zoom for asking a question. If you leave out ONE word from his 1800 word requirement immediate fail. Also didn't respond to a single email.
Don't register for this class if you're not ready to lock in and engage. I liked that the professor was willing to answer all and any questions, very responsive, and as long as you're genuinely engaging this course is absolutely passable.
Genuinely one of the worst teachers I've ever had, I did fine on every test and even did extra credit but when it came to the midterms and final he would grade harshly even though I met every requirement he asked for. He also never responds to emails and not a very kind person
I loved this professor. The only class in which I could actively pay attention and wanted to take notes. I will say he's a no bs kind of guy, being on your phone will not slide (he will tell you to get out of the class). He is a tough grader, but tells you exactly what he expects so it is ultimately on you.Lecture heavy, but worth it! Put effort!
Great professor and has great lectures that really captivate you. I understand why people don't follow through with the class. If you are reading this and thinking of dropping DO IT!! trust me it DOES NOT get easy. If you are passionate about learning about ethnic studies then this is the class you want to take, you learn so much interesting info.
He explains the material well and his lectures are easy to understand. The problem is the grading. For an entry-level class, the written paragraph quizzes are timed and graded extremely harshly. On the first exam, the entire class received a ZERO. Expectations and grading are much tougher than you'd expect for an introductory course.
For this class there is only one book you need and there's not much homework besides the reading. Pay attention to the readings that he says for the essay quizzes and you'll be fine. STUDY HARD for this class.
I took this class in Spring of 2022. This teacher is very energetic and passionate about what he teaches, at time it can come off as a bit intimidating or even hostile but I am sure he means well. If you do what you're supposed to, you will not have any issues here. The class was just 4 essays and a final, your entire grade was based on that.
