great class. it's extremely hard and text heavy. He does root for the students and is very approachable. try to start studying when you enter into his class.
spends the whole time answering questions instead of lecturing. No point in coming to class except you would miss the clicker quizzes. NIce guy but teaching is ineffective
Good person, good class. However he is a little boring.
This is a difficult class to teach because A&P is largely memorization and you can't really teach memorization. He is very kind, and takes all the input he can. I believe he wants us to succeed but you do have to keep up on your work. Definitely start studying as soon as you start class. Reading each of the sections and completing the modules helps
I loved that Professor Lykins always took time for student questions, so many instructors don't. His two TA's rock!
Tough class, very text heavy, requires a lot of focus and studying, but he made it enjoyable and I took a lot away from the course. Only complaint would be lectures. Hard to follow, spends a lot of time answering questions, and not very helpful. Loved the way he runs labs as well. Looked forward to labs weekly.
Professor Lykins teaches only from the book and uses powerpoints from the book, just read, no need to go to class. He didnt change the curve or round grades like promised.
Enjoyed this class and took away a lot.
I'm so glad Mr. Lykins kept his word and adjusted the grading scale. I got "B" with my 82.01% even though the syllabus said 83% was required for a B. This is a hard class, you need to read before lectures and come to class prepared in order to understand all the anatomic words. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't know!
Professor Lykins is probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Yes the class is hard. However I did not want to pay for this class to listen to him talk about life lessons ever 10-15 minutes of class. He knows a lot about anatomy but not enough to go into discrete detail. Tests are composed of the same questions used on the mastering hw.
He is an awesome professor! He is very excited about the material and is always willing to answer questions. He really wants to know how students feel about his teaching styles and class material. I loved his class!
Professor Lykins is hands down the best professor I have ever had. Lykins very clearly cares about all of his students, and is always open to feedback. He does take a bit of time to answer all questions in lecture, but this is good. Lecture powerpoints are always available online, and he approaches lecture as an opportunity to clarify them.
Mr. Lykins is hands down the absolute worst teacher I have had! Teaches straight from the book, belittles students, does not take critical feedback well, picks favorites and has been unfair to me twice since I have had him, one regarding my grade. Do not take any classes with him, you and your money will regret it! ~ From a very serious student.
This is a tough class regardless of where you take it, but I found myself confused most of the class period because we simply went over the textbook basically in lecture. I wish that things would have been explained instead of read to us. He is very kind, but I didn't like the policy changes in the second semester and the one test for all labs.
Mr Lykins was the best professor I had for a&p. He made things clear. Even though he taught from the text in lecture he made things easier to understand. He was always very encouraging and made his test fair. If i had a question he always had time to answer by office hours or by email. I highly recommend this professor. Thank you Mr Lykins
This is my second attempt at taking A&P,I can say that Lykins has made a lot of improvements from last year. He was a new Professor last year and it was his first time teaching A&P and I think he's doing an exceptional job. The course is designed for students to take it upon themselves to learn the material. Lt Col Lykins is a wonderful professor!
Read straight out of the book. No need to come to class. Made me hate the subject he was teaching. It was a waste of my time and a real shame.
He was not helpful and spent the entire class answering questions. It was highly unfair because one of his TAs was the one to write the practicals so her class had a leg up. He was never clear on much. Nice guy, bad teacher. Only reason to go to class is clicker questions. They will boost grade up to 5%.
No need to come to class as it is spent with numerous unrelated questions . The top hate questions that are supposed to be daily for extra credit are few and far between. You pay a lot of money to teach yourself the class. He is a good guy but wastes our time with ridiculous questions, he has office hours, BB and email to address those things.
He is a great teacher and even though his lectures and power points are from the book he does his best to break it down and make it easier to understand. That being said, you don't really need to attend the lecture except for the clicker quizzes which only help your grade 5%. Be careful who you pick for lab some help others not so much...
This class is very difficult. He is a very nice professor but not very helpful. For the tests, there was no study guide, he said to use the syllabus. For an A&P class, this was very difficult.
This class is not easy...you actually need to try! Your best bet is get a jump start on the Terms List he gives out prior to the class start, and make sure you're maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the material. The exams are tough; study study study! Class isn't mandatory. Also, he has a weird sense of humor...you get used to it :)
This class was a ton of work but if you put in the work it's really rewarding! you will use your textbook everyday so be prepared for that! Mr. Lykins is incredibly helpful, just go and see him in his office and ask all your questions- that's the only way i passed! Overall it was the most interesting class I've ever taken but also the hardest
Lectures are a waste of time. He rarely covers information relevant to A&P. The first 20 minutes of class were dedicated to his personal life lessons. He was also notorious for making mistakes while grading exams. Make sure thoroughly check over your exams, you will likely find a mistake and earn some points back.
This classes has been the hardest class I have ever taken, but also this class taught me more then any class ever has. More then likely you will have homework every night and you are constantly studying for it. Honestly there is no point in going to lecture. I learned most of the stuff I know from this class from Lab, so never miss lab!
Goes w/out saying that A&P is hard, but it's even more hard when you have a lousy instructor. He's a nice guy, but it was annoying when he started making his tests impossibly hard halfway through the semester. He started doing "choose all that apply" questions so the test average went from 'C' to 'F' and wouldn't change even tho we all complained.
High expectations to be an "independent learner". In order to follow lectures, it is important to come prepared by basically teaching yourself. (That's why homework is due before lecture) Fast paced! I feel this course is geared more towards pre-nursing students to prepare for the HESI exam. Lykins said to expect 20 hrswk studying
Lt. Dan is one of the best biology professors I've ever had! He explains things clearly and knows most of your questions and uses blackboard to answer any other questions. He makes class interesting and has acronyms to help you remember a lot of the anatomy. He's a very understanding professor and is fair on homework assignments and tests.
Professor Lykins is a nice man who spends a lot of his lectures reading the textbook to you; don't expect to learn too much in lecture. I really enjoy Anatomy and Physiology and am pretty decent at it, but he isn't the best teacher one could ask for. He talks about his family more than he really teaches and his tests cover more than he goes over.
This instructor is the worse one I have ever had! He doesn't not get back to you in emails, it may take up to 3 weeks for any feedback for tests or assignments. His grading is the worse, he will mark everything down until you have a complete ZERO! Do not take his biology class you will be stuck doing it over and be confused.
Lykins is a great professor, but he teaches on of the hardest classes. Anatomy & Physiology is a lot of content stuffed into a semester. He is very willing to help you if you go to his office hours or see him after class. Keep in mind that if you aren't going to put in the work towards this class there is only some much that he can do to help you.

OMG so glad it's over
This was by far the worst professor that I have ever had in my college career. I did not learn anything from him. He is very arrogant and gives a "life lesson" at the beginning of each class waste of time. Lecture is just powerpoint slides and he really doesn't explain anything in detail. Didn't get much by attending lecture. Don't take him!
Dan is a nice guy. A&P is just very difficult to teach because of content. He basically covers the book so it's important to read and do the HW before lecture. This class is mostly SELF-TAUGHT so read and UNDERSTAND the material! Lots of memorizing. Don't wait to study before the test. Study at least 30 mins each day. Start on terms NOW. GO TO EI!!
Professor Lykins was the best professor I have ever had. He teaches one of the hardest classes out there so you have got to put in the work but he want's you to succeed and will help you out in any way you need. I have never read every single word of the text book before but you HAVE TO! My # 1 advice is: go to his office hours and ask questions!
Lykins is one of the worst professors I've ever had. Thankfully, you don't need to be in class to succeed here. I went the first 2 weeks of class but quickly got very annoyed by his lectures. You'll see what I mean if you take his class. I learned practically everything from the book and lab. Study, study, study. Tests are not easy!
The extent of his biology knowledge comes directly from the textbook. Heard him giving out false information during class many times when a student asked him a question that could not directly be answered by the textbook. His lecture slides are direct quotes from the textbook. If you ask a question that isn't directly from the book he has no idea
Lykins was obnoxious at best, arrogant at worst. This class is a challenge because the content is difficult and there's a lot of it. I spent most of my time trying to teach myself, but going over stuff in lab will definitely help. Study for the terms quizzes ahead of time, expect lots of memorization, and study early for the exams.
Professor Lykins is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful professors I've ever had. He does everything in his power to help you learn but if you want to do well in this class you HAVE TO DO THE READING ASSIGNED. It is one of the most difficult classes at UCCS but with his help, you have all of the tools necessary to succeed.
Read, re-read, and RE-READ. Get ahead, do not fall behind e.g. study terms early, read before doing homework, and re-read before and after lecture. Study the CONCEPTS, go to EI, dont study the night before, and use the study area on MAP. You WILL see homework questions on the test! Work hard, but if you're not having fun, you're not doing it right!
Going to class is absolutely worthless because lecture is not helpful and is a huge waste of time. The class average is laughable and the professor thinks it's not his fault. Went to his office with 3 other students for help, he patronized us by teaching us how to read the text book. Seriously.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!! The tests are impossible. He is rude. This class was a complete waste of my time. Expect intense amounts of work. Expect to study all the time. Do assignments as early as possible. Read the textbook front to back. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
1st semester, I attended lectures, studied alone and in groups. I scraped by with a B. 2nd semester, I went to Lykin's office to ask for advice with a couple other students and to add insult to injury, he asked if we knew how to read the text book. Then he patronizingly "taught us how to read." I skipped every lecture 2nd semester and got an A.
I absolutely loved this professor. He is incredibly experienced, personable, and motivational. His class is tough but the material is interesting and he is outstanding!
He gave online homework every class to do for the next class, so you were basically teaching yourself. then when you got to lecture he would not be clear what so ever. if you had a question he would refer you to the syllabus which was 40pgs. Anatomy is a hard topic and he was no help, had to drop the class because he was such a terrible teacher
I would not recommend taking a class with Lykin. His lectures are not helpful because he tests over way more information than he lectures on. Lectures were also filled with useless trivia about his life. Class averages on the tests were terrible. He would walk around DURING the tests and try to shake your hand and ask how the test was going.
Everyone on here that is complaining about Lt. Dan likely didn't try hard enough. Don't get me wrong, A&P is a hard class, though it is totally doable if you just put the work in. Read the material before class, and then use his lecture to fill in gaps. I loved his teaching style, because it mixed in pathophysiology. Wonderful class. Learned a lot.
Indifferent about him as a person. Lots of material. You need to show up having read the chapter, take good notes then read the chapter again. These test were very difficult! I only get A's and I barely got an A- with the help of his extra credit paper ( definitely do that!) Hardest class I think I took in my undergrad.
Lt. Dan is awesome! In order to pass the class you have to read the book and go over it multiple times. Figure out how you learn the material the best and stick with it. The tests are a little tough, but not impossible. Lt. Dan gives life lessons at the beginning of each class and although they aren't applicable to anatomy, they are useful.
READ THE BOOK!! I cannot stress this enough. In some courses, textbooks are required but you never open them. For this course, you mostly teach yourself, and the classes review difficult concepts. Personally, I really like the system. Lt. Dan is a fantastic teacher, and is very friendly and funny. You just have to put in a lot of effort.
I found this professor to be quite arrogant and not very helpful. Lectures are based solely off powerpoints- 0 interaction with classmates. Must be a great auditory learner! Reading the book doesn't even cover some of the material on tests. Overall, wouldn't recommend.
He holds you accountable for your own success in this class, which makes you independent. If you are lazy, don't work hard, and expect him to teach you everything then you will drop out or fail. There is no way he can cover all the information in the book so expect to read a lot. "If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right!"
Solid professor, the course work is dense making lectures long, but he brings a lot of humor making the lectures more fun. He offers a lot of availability for questions and works hard to help his students succeed. Definitely a good choice.
The hikes you go on are 8 hours, in the hot sun, with lots of stops. There are a lot of really tough hikes, but talk to him about your limitations because he understands. I learned more in this 2 week class than I have in a 16 week class. He is right when he says the final is easy. Take this as your biology elective because it is worth it!
Lt. Dan is probably one of my favorite Professors. He has a dry sense of humor that makes the class pretty entertaining, even if the workload is a bit heavy and the lectures incredibly fast paced. He is easy to talk to outside of class and is super willing to answer any questions you have. Great guy, plus he knows what hes talking about.
Lykins was absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. He made me hate the subject of anatomy and made me doubt my ability to get into nursing school. He is never available to answer questions, and the class is all self taught. He is rude, arrogant, and down right the worst teacher to ever step foot on a campus. NO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!
Lt Dan is a great teacher for a very difficult class. He is fast paced and expects you to read the book so if you don't you won't pass. He teaches to what the class struggles on and clears up the most important concepts. I can only imagine how hard this class would have been without a caring and engaging professor.
Lt Dan is a wonderful Instructor! Anatomy is a hard class to take, but he does a wonderful job teaching it! You will be doing a lot of work, but there is no way around it - it doesn't matter the teacher. Lt Dan makes lecture as fun as it can be, and he really does want you to succeed.
I really struggled in this class. Anatomy and Physiology is already a difficult course, and he made it no easier. His lectures consisted of him essentially going over what the book says. His test are very difficult and you wont pass if you dont read. He does have some good mnemonics, but thats the only helpful thing I ever got from lecture.
Dan is cool cat. He's kinda weird but he knows his stuff. Become his friend and your life in A&P will be so much better.
A&P is a tough subject no matter what. Lt Dan is a fantastic professor, he is very helpful. His lecture exams are very challenging and difficult. Yes its hard, but he prepares you to be the best health care professional possible.
Lt Dan is the man! Amazing lectures. Break neck sometimes, but there's just too much from the homework to try to cover in lecture so he just hits the main points that most students had questions about. Do NOT dismiss the terms quizzes at the beginning of the semester. Those are your chance to start off on the right foot.
First day he told us that if we get an A in the class, we might as well be doctors. he did give us homework that helped some, YOU NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING YOU READ EVEN IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE. also the lab practicals he would give us half points if we knew a part of the question. Study hard and forever. Dont sleep or eat just study
Imagine reading 100 pages in a text book and working hard to understand. Now imagine Lt Dan picking a random tiny factoid out of the book to test on in major detail. You fail. Not a fan. Doesn't really teach, and reads out of the book all class. I stopped going to class the second semester and actually did better than the first semester.
Taking Anatomy and Physiology with Lt Dan made me realize what it takes to be in the medical field. This was the toughest class I ever took, but it prepared me better than any class. HE DOES NOT MESS AROUND. Be very prepared to work hard and only think about A&P for two semesters. This class has to be your priority.
The material is hard, but this course takes it to the extreme. Be prepared to worked on this course daily! You need to do the reading and understand the concepts, and even then the exams are impossible. If you need this course, take it with someone else. It's not worth the stress.
This class was VERY hard, however, Lt Dan is a great professor. There is a lot of reading and homework. In order to pass you must put the effort in. He is so nice in office hours and loves to help and is available most of the time. The tests are hard but you get a lot out of the class.
Lt Dan has confused needless difficulty for effective teaching. Exams are completely arbitrary and loaded with "gotcha" questions. My grade went up an entire letter after I stopped trying to learn and started memorizing homework answers. If you care about learning, your GPA, or your future, look elsewhere, because Lt Dan doesn't.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken. Studying and reading took up all my time and somehow I never did well on the tests. The tests are insanely hard and so many "Select all the apply". He picks very obvious favorites. There is a very helpful extra credit assignment though. (One per semester)
Get ready for endless reading, studying, and memorizing, 8 tests a semester. But, he intentionally prepares his students to be exceptional, knowledgable, and intelligent nurses and health professionals. He is incredibly compassionate, I have never taken a test where he didn't say "Im rooting for you" and that he believes in us. It is worth it.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. Expect to study at least an hour a day on top of homework, and studying the weekends. But, that being said this is one if the most beneficial classes I've had. It really prepares you for the workload of a nursing degree. Do the extra credit paper and take the latin root quizzes seriously.
Honestly Lt Dan is a pretty cool guy. Conservative. He was in col. in the USAF and it is apparent in the structure of his class. Very specific, very difficult. The hardest class I've ever taken. Minimum two to three hours a day of studying to just get a B.
Lt. Dan is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. Yes, the class is definitely the hardest class I've ever taken, but I have never learned more in a single class. He makes you know your stuff and if you prove one of his test questions wrong he'll give you credit back. He is interesting in lectures and goes over the most difficult concepts
He is an amazing person, professor, and a respectable man. I would not believe any of the negative reviews on here. If you know you want to be in the healthcare field then I am more than positive that you know what you have signed up for. Yes, anatomy and physiology takes time and focus. Lt Dan does a phenomenal job, make sure youre known in class
DO NOT TAKE!! Dan is the WORST Professor I've ever had. He's sexist & cares only about his "favorite" students. He showed a picture of a bigger boned lady in class on the slide in front of more than 100 students and said that she was "in need of a corset". Horrible model for younger women who are big, like me. He will make your life hell. Good luck
He personally lied to me about his office hours so he wouldn't have to help me. Get ready to teach yourself insanely hard concepts, since he will only help favorites in this class. He made my semesters extremely stressful & it was hard for me to like him after a class when he was extremely offensive while body-shaming women on a projector in class.
I LOVED his class. H&P itself is a very hard class. I think he tried to make things easy for us to understand. You do need to read textbook a lot. And, pay attention during lecture, the materials will be on the test. I got an A, but I literally spent more time on A&P itself than I did on my 3 other classes combined.
Lt. Dan is nice but extremely conservative and strict in his teaching ways. Yes you do learn a lot but I think this class is way harder than it needed to be.
Lt Dan is by far the WORST professor I've ever had. His lecture exams have a lot of trick questions about the smallest details of the textbook, and he creates his lab practicals to make you struggle. It doesn't seem like he actually wants you to be successful. If you care about learning the material at all, do not take him as a professor.
This course is exceptionally hard because of the material. It's crucial to watch lectures and read over the textbook. Don't bother buying a notebook, just take notes right in the textbook. If you can look past the derogatory comments and relating everything to bacon, Lt Dan is not the worst.
Awful
Dropped this guy after the first class. Went on for a bit too long about how Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem made him hate professional football. Also told the class that we would all fail at the hands of him. Don't take even if you are desperate.
this guy is the worst. makes easy classes incredibly hard just for fun
If I could, I would have given him a zero. The first couple of weeks of lecture he would mention dropping out of his course, wish I would have listened. He makes what should be an easy class extremely difficult for all students. Never would recommend or would try to take again.
BOZo of a teacher and actively worsens his community.
Lectures were fun, but he would browse a right-wing satire-news website (the Babylon Bee), sharing his screen over the projector during our quizzes and allude to right-wing views during lectures
