Dr.McCarville replaced Dr.Shunk in teaching this course, and he did an amazing work. The class was very interesting, easy on heart and mind, and very industry-oriented. The class did not have a book, but he provided several articles to support the class scope. His grading is fair, if you work hard enough, you will do fine. Totally recommend him!
Professor of the Year type. Enough said.
What can you say its asu101... No one wants to go to this class but he is easy compared to some of the other ASU101 classes that I had friends take my first semester of freshman year...
Daniel is a VERY nice guy, funny, and one of the most enthusiastic professors I've ever had. The material is very straightforward. Three exams worth 25% each, but he gives lots of partial credit. The last 25% is group work and isn't bad. Recommend.
What I liked the most is how hard Prfessor McCarville is on the cheaters. It really improves the value of my degree.
He's the best IE professor I've had over the course of my degree. He offers great insight, especially since he's actually worked in the field prior to teaching. I would highly recommend taking his classes, if you try you will learn a lot of great, useful information that will take with you to your career as an IE.
Pretty good teacher, clearly interested in the subject and draws on extensive personal experience to back up the content. Only real issue I had was the online lectures had student questions in them that weren't audible, so often 20mins of lecture were him answering a question that you didn't hear. Assigns tons of reading too.
Doesn't give any indication about what is going to be in the exams. We don't even have homework or anything. The only available exercises will be on the exams. Very unclear project. We do not know what we have to do. Tests are very very long. A major part of the program is very boring.
To much theory in this class. Sometimes it is really really boring. Some classes doesn't look like to a an engineering or science course but to general studies course. The exam have confusing useless questions about past stories examples and very confusing theory questions. If you a kind of smart (mathematically) person, do not take the class.
Professor McCarville is very enthusiastic about what he does. I recommend taking his class because he is a fair grader and the expectations for you are clear.
ASU 101 is widely known as the boring, mandatory class. Dr. McCarville changed this notion for me and made it a very interesting and fun class to attend. His lectures are funny and full of visuals and homework is super easy. If you show up to class every day and do the assignments, this class will go from super boring to super entertaining.
ASU101 is really just show up & pass course. Easy A. He helped us by giving us meaningful assignments unlike other professors his assignments were designed to help the student in his career at ASU.
Took his online Extreme Excel course under several recommendations from friends. Even though we weren't given the chance to meet him in person, he sounded very friendly in all his lectures and he was very clear in explaining all the material you needed to complete the assignments. Easy A, highly recommend!
McCarville is very enthusiastic about teaching this course. He likes to use many examples from his previous experiences, which sometimes cause the lectures to be drawn out longer than necessary. There is no indication of what will be on the exams. His multiple choice questions can be confusing and open to interpretation with how they are worded.
McCarville is a great professor. His video lectures are entertaining and he is very enthusiastic. You will not fall asleep during these lectures. I'm definitely taking more classes with him. The class itself is extremely easy. There are no tests, only 6 excel assignments. He doesn't offer +/-, but there is an extra credit assignment.
Although he is super enthusiastic about this topic, he is NOT helpful if you email him. Emailed him multiple times with no response to any email. Also, he uses Excel for Windows computers so if you're a Mac user, you'll struggle. Actually, some assignments can't even be done on your own computer. Lost a ton of points just for having a Mac... smh
This class is Capstone I, to be followed by Capstone II next semester. McCarville is very clear and to the point. You do not pick your Capstone group. A big factor in your group if your GPA. High GPA students get grouped with low GPA students. So when they ask what your GPA is, think carefully before putting somethign down. Good luck.
Dan is a great professor and the course is constructed really well. Everything is explained in the videos and you can complete this course easily within the first month of the semester, and learn a lot about Excel along the way. Easy A. Highly recommend.
A really good class. A lot of good information. To be successful you need to listen to the lectures and read the book. Do the practice problems that are assigned as well. He is one of the best profs in the engineering dept. Use the TA for help as well.
There was only three easy assignments for the whole class. You must attend every class because your grade depends on it. He is an awesome teacher who truly cares about your progress and how you succeed in college. Gives great advice and is a great connection for IE and EM majors. Easy A
Extreme Excel is the easiest class I have ever taken. No + / -, 8 assignments, so an easy A. You can watch the lecture videos but they're ridiculously long (20-40 minutes typically) to explain how to do a function on excel that often that just takes a couple of minutes, but least he's very clear and goes into detail about Excel. Responds to emails.
Dan isn't a good teacher in my opinion. I took the class to learn more about Project Management, but only got an outdated, opinionated, lengthy and uninspiring set of lectures. If you are taking this class to become more knowledgeable about project management, then don't bother and just search on wikipedia. All he does is read from the slides.
While he is enthusiastic and upbeat, he tends to ramble every class. The class isn't too hard but all the the attention must be on him or he freaks out (no phones or laptops). This means he rarely does inclass examples, so lectures can be long. I think he's an ok professor but needs to worry less about the attention being on him and focus on class
There is no homework in the class so you do not know what is on the exams and how to prepare for them. Exams have multiple choice questions that are very unclear, and more than one answer fits. The only grades that you will get in this class are exam grades, and no clear feedback provided for points taken off.
Easy 1 credit class. Session A class, one assignment due every week. His lectures are very long, but you could probably do the assignment by looking the functions you need to finish on the spreadsheet. Can be difficult if you dont know excel very well, then watch the lectures because he goes indepth but slow.
The Professor lectures are interesting and informative but don't expect to get an A. Total of 3 Exams and 1 Journal Paper (no homework or quizzes). Exam Questions are misleading and almost all answers could apply at multiple choice questions. He does not provide answers to Exams so you will never know what you did wrong or where to improve.
Sincere dude. Lectures are very long and rather boring. There were a few good ones. Otherwise he just reads the slides. The tests were somewhat difficult. Group project is a piece of cake. He really cares about you though as a student and wants to help you succeed. Random attendance checks. Hates kids on phones on laptops.
McCarville lectures a lot about application of theories covered in the course and spends only a small part of the class covering the math behind it. Expect any math discussed in lectures to be on the exams. Multiple choice questions are tricky but fair. He hints at exam questions, so watch all lectures. Take organized notes/cheat sheets.
McCarville is one of my favorite professors in the IE/EM program. This class literally got me multiple job offers just by going to class and engaging in the material. I did not take notes or even study all that much. Dr. McCarville can be unreasonable at times but I feel like he is just trying to get you ready for industry. Try to get to know him.
Professor McCarville will answer any and all questions you have about the weekly assignments! 6 week Session A course and you can honestly finish it in a weekend. The lectures are less than an hour per week and he talks fairly slow so you can watch at double speed! You learn a lot about excel in this class & it's useful to take away and use later!!
One of the best IEE Professor, his lectures are interesting but sometimes can be lengthy. I think if you dun like him, u probably wont like most of the IEE professor in asu.
Took Extreme Excel and it was really easy and practical. The lectures taught about different excel functions, and there was one assignment every week, plus a bit of extra credit. The prof is also helpful, he emails with internship opportunities and will answer any questions.
Attend to class, follow the lecture and you can pass. Professor is funny and experienced. You can learn a lot from him
Professor McCarville is a sweetheart! The entire course can be finished in a weekend if you're good at excel, or if you can manage to watch all the lecture videos and finish the easy assignments. Each video is 30 minutes to an hour long and the assignment directly applies what you're learning. He also attaches an example document for you too!!
By far Daniel McCarville's Extreme Excel class is the best online course I have ever taken. I heard many great things about him and how he teaches, so I decided to take his class despite the fact that I did not need it for my major. He taught precisely and concisely, and always had such a pleasant attitude. He made the class a pleasure to take. I w
The sweetest professor in CIDSE. Dr. McCarville is very generous and gives good feedback to students - especially during the IEE 369 labs. Attendance is mandatory so make sure you are early for class. And lastly, the exams are focused on the lecture slides. So, make sure you go over those and ask questions ahead of time and you should be fine.
I strongly recommend this class if you are an engineer. Dr. McCarville teaches you to be very efficient in excel, informed by his experience in industry. His lectures are interesting, personally I watched them at 2x speed. He's a nice man and pretty funny to listen to. Class is easy and guaranteed A if you do the homework assignments. No tests.
I had him for 369, 454, and 458. He cares a lot about his students, and tries to keep the class motivated. He's funny and his assignments are reasonable. Take him
Dr. McCarville is a great person, yet he talks waaay too much and goes off on tangents a lot. His tests are SUPER subjective and long. He is one of those professors that makes the 4 answers on the multiple choice possible but you have to pick "the best" out of them. He is a good person but not necessarily a good professor.
7 weekly assignments and a syllabus quiz. He provides videos that walk you through Excel functions and features, but some concepts you'll need to figure out on your own. He can track copying answers, so work together but don't cheat. Go in to office hours or send an email if you have questions. Some assignments require a PC instead of Mac.
Great and short class to understand basic excel
Class is easy. Do the assignment and watch the videos. Dr. Mccarville is also very caring and takes time for his students, so use that to your advantage.
I believe the class is way harder than it should be for online students. There is no clear communication, and good luck waiting for someone to reply to your questions on the discussion board. Take notes, a lot of notes, watch all lectures twice (if possible), and you will get a good grade - but don't expect to actually learn to manage projects.
I as someone that manages engineering projects at my work, this class was incredibly relevant to what I do. It formalized a lot of concepts I work around everyday. Class wasn't stressful but I still learned a lot. I would highly recommend this class but I will admit I watch almost all of the lectures at 1.4X speed. Lots of stories in lecture.
Intro to Financial Engineering (IEE412) is a really interesting class however, it is difficult as well. Make sure your IEE300 skills are up to the mark. 6 major assignments weighted on 50% of your final grade. All on Excel which can be overwhelming sometimes but follow his steps on lecture and you're golden. 2 non-cumulative exams worth 25% each.
Want to actually know how to be a legit engineer when you graduate instead of just collecting your degree? If youre smart you would take him for every class you could and listen to every word he says. He will give you the tools to be the best engineer that you can be.
Prof. McCarville is a very good professor. I enjoy his classes because he tries to make even the most boring subjects interesting. He's funny and passionate about his topics. Most of his test are tough and cover a LOT of information. Even his multiple choice test are tough, not your typical throw 2 answers out and decide between the two left!
The class was relatively easy and I did well in it. I'm just not a fan of the fact the professor completely ignored the discussion forums and didn't respond to any posts. Sent many emails though. I had an issue at least 3 other students posted about with a certain assignment and had he just answered one of them, everybody would've had an answer.
Great professor overall. Taken many courses from him this was just the most recent. His passion for the subjects combined with his industry knowledge make him the perfect resource for a student to not only learn the material but also prepare for the real world.
McCarville really has no clue what his students need. Will give you really vague assignments that you must figure out on your own. Does not offer the Y grade under any circumstance even with COVID-19 going around. Really inconsiderate.
What an absolute joke. Upon taking his final for this class, I can confidently say that this professor is one of the heartless, out of touch professors at ASU. Not only was attendance still mandatory after switch to online. Not only were his assignments brutal. But he decides to give us a final completely unrelated to the slides and is worth 35%
Amazing online class! Really teaches you the useful tips for using Excel in real engineering industry. The class is literally just a bunch of lectures then an assignment a week. The class is only graded on these assignments, but they are pretty clear. Main thing: work ahead! Super easy since he opens the course up the week before classes.
Very heavy tester, material is very vague on his exams. Most of his exam questions are from ideas he talks about in class, so take him if you have good memory or willing to take many notes. He is very stern and has unreasonable expectations. Heavy homework load in general. He is pretty respectful and professional at times though.
"I'm not making this up"
In a pool of professors that dont care about their students Dr. McCarville stands out. He is very passionate about the work he does and actually cares about his students past just the classroom. He not only prepares you for his class but also prepares you for everything you need to know after. Great guy.
Insane exams and tedious classes... Exams are designed to make you fail.
He's a great guy, not as great professor. 42-question tests with ambiguous and subjective questions, some of them about random things he says in lectures. with covid he made this class flipped with videos and a zoom session so it was like taking the class twice. Also he talks way too much.
McCarville is a great guy. If you get the chance to be in his classes, take advantage of the stories he tells because it applies to the industry. However, he does like to ramble and sometimes what is on the exams is not always clear. I thought Project Management would be a pretty easy class but its pretty tough.. He is a stickler on being late.
He talks a lot. If you take his online class (regularly or bc of covid) take advantage of his videos to practice your statistics stuff by tracking how many times he says "engineering" or "engineer" and then make distributions or something based on that. Or make a drinking game out of it.
I would recommend anyone to take this class. It is one credit and can be completed in about a week. Helpful and directly applicable to industry work. Dr. McCraville will explain everything super clear and will go from the most basic stuff like how to copy and paste in excel, to complicated formulas, charts, etc
Admittedly, I wasnt the biggest fan of McCarville prior to this course, considering 474 was rough. However, IEE458 is definitely McCarvilles class. Night and day from other classes, McCarville lays off the pressure and makes the material really understandable. On top of that, we only meet on half the days! If you go to his office hrs, easy A or B
Dr. McCarville is one of my favorite professor at ASU, I took IEE369 with him and he was amazing exams are clear and assignments are easy to complete
IEE320 is an excellent introduction to excel. I had almost no knowledge on excel but Professor McCarville's lectures were an excellent introduction . I now feel much more confident. The only issue I had with the class was that the audio quality in the lecture videos was bad, but it really wasn't such a big deal. Excellent lecturer.
He is a nice guy and a good professor, but he NEVER OFFER ANY REVIEW MATERIAL for exam, you have to just read those two 40 pages slides per week and try find out things by your own.
I took him for IEE 369 and IEE 458 and would take even more classes with him. Probably the best IE Prof, tests aren't as easy sometimes, questions based on book questions, lectures or his theorems. You can show him the assignment before submitting and will give you what you need to change in details. The best to ask for career advice imo.
Really easy A which is entirely graded off of assignments.
He tells a lot of stories that go hand in hand with what is being taught. Overall, hes a great teacher and makes the class very fun!
I really liked McCarville - great lecturer, gives great career advice, has a wealth of industry experience, and is one of the most genuinely kind professors you'll have. My only complaints: a) quiz/exam questions can be poorly worded; b) grading in assignments is somewhat unreasonable, as it is easy to lose a ton of points for trivial things.
Pretty straightforward class: watch lecture videos and complete assignments. Usually one assignment per week. A bit time consuming for 1 credit, but worth it. Very practical and useful class. I do wish they had taught more advanced excel functions, but the first two weeks are super introductory because many students have little to no experience.
I took IEE 572 course xith prof. McCarville, the course itself was hard and requires a lot of studying, however prof. McCarville gave extra credit in every exam
This was a one credit class but honestly one of the more useful classes I've taken as a senior. His lectures are very short and straight to the point and give you all of the information you need to complete the 8 homework assignments. This class would have been nice to have taken as a freshman since Excel is super versatile and a useful tool!
Special case but he found it really easy to point at me and use me as examples in this course. Got anxiety and stopped showing up to class out of that fear. Failed the first exam because I didn't go to class. Dropped the class. Butterfly effect lol. Easy class and pretty cool dude.
As an engineering major, being proficient in Excel is an extremely valuable skill to have and Dr. McCarville gives you all the tools you need to learn the secrets of Excel. Extremely easy class - the guy really just wants to teach you how great Excel really is. 10000% worth the small amount of time this class took. TAKE THIS CLASS!
One of the best teachers at ASU
Dr. McCarville is awesome. Loved IEE 369!!! Tests aren't difficult, just make good cheat sheets, watch all lectures, and read all extra material. Labs are fun. One bad, the peer participation grade at the end doesn't help your grade. It can only hurt it. If someone does more work in the group they should be rewarded in my opinion.
During my course with McCarville I have only improved my skills of fast tackling his reading of many PowerPoint slides where me and my peers preferred to use the term of SlideReader to describe his lectures . This is all what his lectures about! You'll be asked to register for his Microsoft Excel course, otherwise you can predict a lower grade!
Fun class! Teaches you to optimize processes, eliminate waste, and work with a team. Each class is a simulation where you compete against other teams. His exams were tricky because he asks for the "best possible" answer. Also make sure that when you ask him questions after class you actually have time because he can keep talking for a while. :)
You honestly lucked out if you have him for a professor, and you aren't going to get much better than this. He is very polite, and his tests aren't too bad as long as you study for them. It's a pretty smooth and stress-free class that is fun to learn about. He's a goofy professor, but there's nothing wrong with that.
Mirrors IEE 412 but includes a graduate portfolio. It consists of 2 exams, 6 Excel homework assignments, and a grad portfolio. The portfolio assesses stocks and submitted in three parts. The lecture-heavy course and time-consuming Excel homework make this course challenging. The professor offers helpful feedback and answers questions.
Dr. McCarville is an extremely caring person. He delivers lectures well, but did slide read a lot for this class. Assignments are tedious and easy to mess up. I often felt like I was blindly using formulae, rather than actually learning. Exam questions are poorly-worded, and some of the things he chooses to ask seem trivial.
Easy 1-cred course. McCarville explains everything clearly and the assignments don't take too long to complete. Even though he doesn't really say this, it's basically an intro course (similar to CIS105's excel section). Also, keep in mind that he doesn't give A+s, even if you're over 100%. Good class, I recommend.
Easy 1 credit class. McCarville explains how to do everything clearly and all the assignments could be finished within a weekend. Though on his syllabus he says >100% is A+, he does not give you an A+ even if you are above 100%. Good class to introduce you to Excel, i recommend!
Very straightforward, easy A class. Learned a lot in just 8 extremely easy assignments.
Very easy class. Can be done in hours if you want. Content taught is quite useful. Highly recommended for engineering, business, science, & programming majors. Only criticism is lack of depth. Was expecting at least an introduction to VBA scripting & automation. Still worth it for 1 credit. Class opens during break so finish before semester starts.
Dr. Dan McCarville is the Bowling shirt wearing superman that I needed this A session. I took his Extreme Excel course and it's easily the best engineering course I have ever taken. This gentleman is wonderful and I'm hoping to take one of his upper division courses as a technical elective next semester!
Clear lectures, and clear assignments. You could finish the class in a week if you wanted to.
Class itself is interesting and the assignments are actually pretty useful. McCarville is a smart and chill guy but sometimes his lectures get a little boring and his rules like no laptops out during class gets a bit annoying. Read the textbook and study the lecture slides to do well on his exams. Go to class because the extra credit helps.
Very, very helpful and accessible, cares about student success. Just take the class it's fun and helpful.
This class was very easy and the professor grades very fairly. Exams are very lecture heavy so pay close attention in lecture. Material is not challenging and almost all the homework assignments are explained well in the lectures. If you pay attention in class and do your assignments, this class is an easy A.
Dude, this was the easiest practical course of my life, A+ in two days worth of work and learning, fully recommend. Professor did it right.
The easiest A of my life. Not only does it teach you excel , it's the perfect GPA booster. Has only one homework per week, and you could finish all the homework's in a single day if you'd like. TAKE IT!!!
