Awesome teacher, his in class lectures are HILARIOUS but useless. He spends time listing theorems and defs and in the end the homework teaches you the stuff. Go to his office hours, he helps a ton! Lets you make up tests, or even take things early if you ask! No attendance policy! If you apply yourself, easy to get a good grade! Take him!
Very good teacher, nice too look at. knows what hes talking about and interacts with the class so you have to know what is going on
Mr McGhan is the best teacher for Calc! I looked forward to going to his class because it was non stop laughing and he kept the stress pretty low through out the year. I would highly recommend taking him for pretty much any math class. The one bad thing is that sometimes he can go a little fast but he is always willing to go the extra mile to help!
Great Teacher! His class was so much fun. I've never really liked math until taking his class. After his class that's all I can think about. He truly is a great person to take for math. The work load is fairly easy and he provides great notes and practice exams. If you take him and try hard their is no reason you shouldn't receive an A. Hes awesome
Great teacher. I was hesitant at first because he seemed a little young, but he turned out to be an amazing teacher. Very clear and low workload. You will have to attend every class to get an A, but class is a ton of fun. Take I'm for calculus if you can.
This guy is a terrible teacher. 120 minutes of classwork crammed into 50 minutes of needless rambling that never helped. If he shut up and explained the course material rather than telling us about the "sick waves" from the previous weekend maybe more people wouldn't be lost after class.
He's alright. The class is very boring and he's very mono-toned, but his tests and quizzes are very easy. He gives study guides that are exactly like the test and goes over them. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want a good grade, you need to attend class because that's where he goes over everything. Easy class. Overall, I recommend.
Yes he is very cute but I am horrible at math and he tends to rush through the material. He gives you a study guide for the test but I always felt like the actual test was way harder. Attendance is optional but I should have gone more even though it was super boring.
He is really fast but this makes him entertaining and easy to pay attention to. He's kind of odd but easy to learn from and very informal.
Had him for calc after my previous teacher quit for another job. Cool guy, makes the class interesting. I would recommend him.
McGhan is the man. Not only is he the cutest Calculus teacher but he goes out of his way to explain things to his students. Has a sense of humor which made the class fun, and has a somewhat of a sassy attitude, but still loved the class!
Mr. McGhan is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He is a very helpful and clear professor. He might seem like he is a little fast paced but he will go back and explain things to anyone who does not understand concepts. He is such a great teacher I HIGHLY recommend him, especially if you like math.
MCGHAN IS THE MAN!!!!! He's an awesome professor. He really helps the students that care. He made calculus fun, which is struggle for a lot of math teachers. Highly recommend!
Ok so I only had him for the last half of the semester but his teaching style is sort of all over the place. There were two chalkboards in the class and he would sort of run back and forth from one to the other. If I hadn't taken AP Calc in high school, I don't know how I would have done in the class. Great person, kind of frazzled teacher.
Great professor!! He is very clear and makes sure everyone understands. He does go fast sometimes, but nothing too serious. Quizes almost every Friday are not too difficult and homework is just like any other math class. Overall, a great math professor
Mr. McGhan is an awesome professor! He really enjoys teaching and is willing to help with anything you need. Everything on the homework and test is covered in class thoroughly and the he gives you plenty of time to do both. Definitely take this professor!
McGhan was a great professor. He reviewed all the material, explained it well, made it clear what we needed to know, and always had a lot of energy. Quizes most fridays with about half being group quizes. He would often move back the online homework due dates and was very reasonable. I'm hoping to take him again.
He's a really nice professor. His quizzes and tests were pretty easy, just look back over the homework because it really does help! No worries if you don't finish the homework because he'll open it back up.
Calculus is tough. Facts are facts. However, Professor McGhan is BY FAR the best math professor I've ever had. He makes calculus understandable and really wants you to succeed and get it. Come to class and do all the assignments. If you understand his lectures and hw, you'll get an A. No surprises on tests. Can't wait to take him for Math 162.
McGhan the Man! is the best professor I think I've ever had. Go to class. Do the homework. Make flash cards. Learn your differentials and integrals. Remember SOH CAH TOA and the unit circle, and you should be fine.
Great math teacher!! Makes class fun and is always willing to help outside of class. There are weekly quizzes and he reviews before each of them. He also opens up all of the homework at the end of the semester.
Drops 2 lowest quizzes and 1 test. Homework is mandatory but it is good practice for the quizzes and tests, but nothing too difficult. Best calculus instructor at UNCW in my opinion. Don't buy the textbook, just use the ebook that comes with webassign to save money.
If you haven't taken trig recently brush up on it before taking this class! Seriously, do it. McGhan does a great job explaining new material but if you don't know your trig like the back of your hand you are not going to do well.
162 will be a challenging math course with any professor, but he does a good job making it as simple as possible. He goes extremely fast, and it can be hard to take notes. All notes come directly from the book. Weekly quizzes are pretty simple; tests can be hard, but if you study it shouldn't be too bad. All HW assignments stay open. Good prof.
BEST CALC TEACHER BY FAR! In the beginning youll have to get used to his lectures. Hes really fast but if you ask questions he will always stop and explain. He gives HW out which helps a lot to boost your grade. Friday quizzes but reviews before we do it and its so easy. I go to his office hours ALL the time. He cares and helps! TAKE HIM!!
Even though he was teaching a class with about 40 people in it, McGhan was still very engaging in his lectures, and cracked some good jokes. If you need help, all you have to do is ask, and the tests are always easier than the homework. I recommend him to everyone who plans on taking a math class.
This guy does not know how to teach MAT111... Horrible. The lessons and homework were nothing like the tests. Lectures are odd and time management was way off.
In the beginning this professor was great I understood most of the material. However, as lessons continued on I got more confused. I was baffled when this happened due to the fact that I got an A in statistics in high school. I thought that simple algebra would not be hard. I was wrong. I definitely have had to work for this grade more than most.
Mr. McGhan is a super nice, funny guy, and he's also a great teacher. It's easy to tell that he wants all of his students to succeed. I had him for calculus 2, which is incredibly tough, but I made a good grade because he was very willing to help and easily accessible outside of class.
Great teacher. Weekly quizzes in Calc II suck, but he is ALWAYS willing to help outside of class. Can't see myself getting through 162 without someone like this.
Calculus II is just hard, there is no way around it. McGhan goes really fast through his lectures, but you have everything you need to practice with. Tests are easier than expected and you know what will be on it. His energy makes this class fun. This is NOT an easy A, but he is now one of my favorite teachers! Practice homework to pass!
Great professor! Presents material clearly and gives tons of examples! As long as you review the notes, do the homework and practice problems the tests and quizzes are straight forward. The only thing I didn't enjoy were the maple assignments, but if you go to his office hours he is super helpful and will walk you through it.
You can tell that he's passionate about teaching, and will help you after or before class if you have questions. However, his tests are tough and he's a tough grader. A small mistake on one problem can cause you to lose over half the points. I struggled the entire time I was in his class. You're going to have to work hard for a good grade.
McGhan is a great professor! His lectures are very clear and he presents tough material well. He can be a tough grader when it comes to exams. However, he offers plenty of homework which helps a lot on the exams. The only downside to his class are the Maple assignments as he offers little in class help for them.
Mr. McGhan's lectures are good and sometimes funny. He uses WebAssign and Maple for homework. Also, he is a tough grader when it comes to tests. For example, I did a problem correct but he did not like the method I used to solve it, so he marked the whole question wrong.
He is such an awesome professor. He really cares about his students and knows what hes talking about. His class can be difficult and he goes quickly through material, but if you pay attention and actually go to class, you will most likely be fine. He will also talk to you outside of class if you need help.
Calc 1 is always tough but he is very personable and easy to talk to. I would pick him again for that reason. However he does use MAPLE which is basically a computer program that helps solve calc problems. MAPLE was tough for me because I don't know anything about computer programming.
Of the calculus professors, McGhan is the best one. He explains things well and makes it easy for you to get an A if you want it. Sometimes his class notes are all over the place but he has a really great personality. Quizzes are every Friday, but half are group quizzes. Some questions are curve balls that "you can figure out from what we learned."
McGhan is a funny and passionate prof, making him and his class enjoyable. However, he can kind of get frazzled in lecture and go a little too fast sometimes, but asking questions helps a lot. Make sure you pay attention to the tricky stuff in lecture and do the online work, as he often quizzes/tests on the more challenging items.
MY QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
Dan is a very good calculus professor and is very understanding when it comes to grading exams. The homework is typically more difficult than the exams so make sure you do the homework and really understand it. I'm not good at calculus and Dan made it pretty easy to get an A if you showed up to class and paid attention.
If you are there to learn, he is there to teach. His lectures provide concise understanding of the material which I value and he provides plenty of opportunities to as questions and gain comprehension.
He was a wonderful teacher! He made feel confident in this class and really wanted everyone to pass! If you work with him, he will work with you!!!
McGhan was a nice and chill guy but I have no clue how he taught in person since I took it online. The only issue I had was how frequently he would reschedule our synchronous days last minute. Group quizzes were awesome (Go to group quiz if you take it online he'll basically walk you through the entire problem) He also let HW assignments stay open.
I appreciate professor McGhan. I took this class during the pandemic so the only thing I wish he did better was make the grades available. I didn't know where I was standing for most of his class, the asynchronous days were always posted at different times which made it hard for me to keep up. Follow the lectures, do the homework and you'll be fine
I don't think I would've passed Calc 2 if it weren't for McGhan. I took 161 with him too. Great professor and teaches you in a method that is easier to understand than what's on the textbook.
This was an online lecture and McGhan recorded a lecture with many problems and ways to solve the problem He went way and above during the pandemic. This guy cares about his students succeeding. He seriously was the best professor during the pandemic. UNCW give this man a Professor of the Year Award.
Took him for mat111 freshman year, not a great start to uni. Very lecture heavy. Goes super fast over topics and leaves little to no time for quizzes or questions. Acts like we should already know all these topics hes going over. Doesnt believe in extra credit.
If you struggle in math dont take McGhan he teaches so fast half the time he gets the answer wrong. He gives out quizs that are nothing like the homework I got a better grade in honors calc last year than in his MAT111 class.
Good guy, but not the best teacher (not very patient). He goes over topics super fast and acts like the students should already know what hes talking about. He leaves little time for quizzes and tests and doesnt review the material before them. He also doesnt believe in extra credit. If youre a slower learner, I would advise not to take him.
if you want to pass math 111 dont take him as a teacher. Assessments are never like any of the review guides. goes through a new unit every single day very hard to keep up.
If your struggle with at all do not take Mcghan he will give you the most complicated version of a question, doesn't explain super well and the grade is based mostly on difficult exams worth 15% each.
He moves way too fast and if you're even slightly confused, good luck. Office hours are available and helpful, but I had to go to them every day to see a change in my grade. Tests are unreasonably hard and there's a quiz every week.
nice guy, but goes very fast. wouldnt recommend if you struggle with math. also not accessible outside of class. not very patient. makes math 111 very hard and the tests are not at all like the review sheets he gives
Definitely knows his stuff but moves really fast. You take a ton of notes and have weekly quizzes. Wish he would go a little slower considering the content is pretty difficult, but he's pretty funny and tries to make class interesting. If you want to get on his good side show up to class and participate
I was in his class for 2 days and had to transfer out of it to a new professor. He goes very fast in all of his lectures it's extremely hard to catch up you'll most likely have to teach yourself with youtube videos. However, if you're a mathematician and can understand it at a 95 mph rate then this is the class for you
I hated MAT 111 more than anything in my entire life. He talks so fast and goes over stuff so fast so I promise you won't learn anything unless you have a photographic memory. If you're not good at math in general do not take his class because you will fail... just like me.
If you do not understand Math easily, I would not recommend this professor. He is a very nice man but teaches at a very fast pace. Doesn't really care if majority of the class is confused, and most of the time we were. On days we had a quiz we would have lecture on new material for the first hour of class and then the last 15 minutes for the quiz.
Very good professor! Quizzes correlate well with what he teachers in class (Obviously it wont be exact). I showed up late to most classes (if youre reading this I felt bad every time I did) and was still able to keep up. He responds to emails of questions. People complaining probably wanted an easy A without effort. Tip: Review in class examples.
MAT 151 is a hard class, the people complaining would have complained for every prof. McGahn wants you to pass, always went out of his way for office hours, lectures are fast yes but 151 has a lot of material to cover in one sem. The first test and a few quizzes are hard, then it gets better. He's a funny prof, and I actually really like him.
Mr. McGhan is a really good teacher even though he may move at a fast pace. If you put effort into the homework and go to class the class is doable. He also was receptive of class comments and told us exactly what to know for tests. I think he is one of the best choices if you need to take 151.
I thought he was a very nice guy and a good teacher. I think if you put in effort, take notes, and study, you'll get a good grade in the class. The material is difficult at times, but I think most of the people struggling just didn't put in as much effort as they needed to for the class. You have to pay attention and take notes.
If you value mental health or sanity, do NOT take this man. His quizzes and test are NOTHING like the homework or study guides, his classes are significantly harder than the other MAT-111 classes. He also will hold you exactly till your class is over and most of the time holds you over. He still hasnt put in our grades and the grades are due today
This class was TERRIBLE!He teaches so fast and didn't care that all of us were lost. The tests were nothing like our homework or guided notes. He also is so inconsistent with his grading. I compared my test to a classmate and on questions where we did the EXACT same thing, they got fewer points off. You'll probably cry a lot over this class, I did.
McGhan is literally the worst professor you could take math with. He rushed through all his lectures and made the material confusing for the whole class. He would make us wait to ask questions at the end when class was over, or not leave enough time for them. He was condescending when you ask him for help. Gave us quizzes and not enough time.
The absolute worst professor! Hated him and his class. Do not take his class if you struggle with math. He will not care enough to help you. He will make you feel bad for not understanding the material. He gives quizzes every week but always at the end of class. Tests are NOTHING like review guides. They do not help you.
This class made me cry. Hated McGhan, he doesn't care about his class needs. He acts as the class is the problem when the class average on exams is an F. Do not take his class if you want to pass.
This class is a trainwreck. Do not take him if you struggle with math. He doesn't care about his students when they tell him point-blank that he is going too fast or the material is confusing. He literally yelled at us for telling him that we need him to slow down.
Awful teacher, taught way too fast. Wasnt overly nice to his students.
He is one of the most chill and easy going professors I have had. He is not tough on grading at all and is pretty lenient with all of the online homework assignments. He makes the class very straight forward, but it does move at a fast pace. If you have to take MAT151 he is for sure the best option.
Dr. Mcghan was incredibly rude to his students, often shocked when we needed examples to understand complex problems. Did not teach well. Would not suggest taking this class and having to put up with the disrespect. Plenty of homework to help cushion your test and quiz grades, however due dates were constantly moved and got incredible confusing.
THE professor to take for calc 2. Genuinely wanted to see the class succeed and was excited to teach the material everyday. There is student engagement in the class, which I found to be super helpful. Mcghan would walk around the classroom to ensure our notes/work was correct. Super helpful during office hours. Wish I could take him for calc 3!
As you can expect from a Calc class, it is going to be very fast paced. Get ready for fast explanations and fast paced classes day in and out. Nevertheless, Prof. McGhan is great with his explanations and takes time to answer any questions that students may have during and after class. Expect to have lots of quizzes and homeworks.
He's super nice but he goes so fast when showing the work that it's almost impossible to keep up. For the select students that can keep up, he changes to work at their pace so you absolutely can get left in the dark.
I hate math, but my absolute favorite professor!! He makes it easy(ish) to understand. 3 units/exams - HW (20% of grade) opens at start of unit and is open until the exam. Endless HW attempts to make 100. weekly quizzes (lowest dropped), group quiz (1 per unit), 3 tests, 1 final. Final replaces lowest exam grade. Go to office hours from the start.
Prof McGhan is one of the best professors I've ever had. I am horrible at math but found this class to be relatively understandable. His office hours are super helpful and he always made sure I understood before leaving. He gives good examples in class and his exams aren't too difficult. He also gives out weekly quizzes and some are group quizzes.
McGhan is the best there is. He is very accessible for office hours and is ALWAYS willing to help anyone who is willing to ask. Quizzes most Fridays, some are group/takehome. Homework is an easy 100, infinite attempts on probs and if you're stuck he will help. Attendance is not mandatory but not going to class will make it MUCH harder.
Mr. McGhan challenged us quite a bit but supported us even more with in-depth lectures, practice problems, and office hours Monday-Thursday. The tests are challenging and the online homework takes some time, but if you put in lots of time outside of class and make it obvious you are trying (go to office hours), you will do well!
McGhan himself is very nice and willing to help, and is probably your best option for a calculus professor. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS and try to do better on the tests since they count more toward your grade! The thing that'd make the class better is if we had more time for quizzes, because right now he teaches and then we have 20 minutes to take it!
McGhan is your best option for Calculus. You have a quiz almost every week, but he lets you take some as a group and take it home to finish it. There are three quizzes aside from the final, and they are pretty hard so you have to do pretty well to keep your grade up. Homework is somewhat hard, but he gives a lot of time to do it.
Honestly probs the best calc professor youre going to have here. But,quizzes/tests are ROUGHHH. group quiz sometimes. Uses mylab for grading & HW (unlimited attempts for a 100). Goes at a fast pace and expects you to know how to do it already. Go to office hours! 3 exams&1 cumulative, posts practice problems on canvas. dont skip or youll be behind.
Professor Mcghan is my favorite professor I've taken. He is extremely compassionate and funny. He gives partial credit on every test/quiz, plus he drops the lowest test AND quiz grade. He gave out study guides and prep tests for every test we had. The math can be confusing at times, but if you reach out to him, he's very willing to help. MUST TAKE
Calc II is a hard class. However, Mr.McGhan is a great teacher. I was nervous about this class because I did not have the best experience with calc I. You have to put in the work and study but besides that class is enjoyable and I laugh frequently in his classroom. If you have to take 162 take it with Mr.McGhan it saved my mental health.
Tests:40% Quizzes:30% Homework:20% Participation:10% Incredible lecturer, super funny, material is going to be hard but he is super understanding and helpful. 10/10
He's super cool and this was my first time taking him. The class itself is not that hard if you can conceptualize it, except series are hard. Save your drop for the series test, don't waste it on the first one. 4 Tests: 1 Dropped 15% each. 10 Quizes:1 dropped 25%, HW 10%, Final 20%. Just study for 30 minutes a day after class and you'll do great!
The teacher was nice, but his lectures were way too fast. I felt like he never gave background to anything he introduced us to so I was always left very confused. Only way to learn anything was by homework. The homework and due dates for everything were always getting switched. The tests and quizzes never matched what we were working on in class.
He seems like a good person but lectures are very fast paced and not very well explained. If you miss one day of class you may fail a quiz because everything is taught in person and not practiced in the homework. Good guy though!
Calc is hard but if you try and go to his office hours he will make it easier
Dr. McGhan was a good teacher for Mat151. If you are a good algebra student calc will be easy. Also, if you have taken calc before this class will be a breeze. Overall if you go to class and pay attention this class is very easy.
Mr. McGhans class was my favorite I took this semester. His class was difficult at first but as the semester went on it got a lot easier. If you are good at math I would definitely recommend his class. If you need extra help and are a slower learner I wouldn't recommend taking his class. Sometimes he gives take home quizzes which help your grade.
Mr. McGhan has been one of my favorite professors at UNCW. His quizzes are pretty difficult so do the homework as they will prepare you for the quizzes. His tests are a bit easier because he releases a very similar practice test before every test. Overall, not a super easy class but if you stay on top of it and practice, you will get an A.
I am not going to ramble on about my experience with this professor. Instead, I will give whoever is reading this my word that you would be better off taking the course with a different professor. Seriously, I assure you, stay away.
THIS IS THE PROFESSOR TO TAKE!!! I took MAT-151 (Basic Calculus) and honestly started off horribly. I wasn't comprehending the material and in a way I had given up on myself, but Mr. McGhan hadn't. Every day he holds office hours and will take the time to ensure you learn the material. The class is not easy, but you'll pass if you give the effort.
Very nice guy and will definitely help outside of class if confused, but he goes so fast in class it's very hard to comprehend. If you miss one day of class you fall behind, as he doesn't post notes online. Quizzes and tests are also pretty hard. Be prepared if you take his class to do a lot of studying and teaching yourself outside of the class.
This class made me question the continuity of my sanity. It was not differentiable. If you thought limits were confusing, wait until you hit the limit of your patience in week 3.
