If you know any french perpare for an easy ride. This guy is a very, very, very easy teacher. He is able to make class fun, but sometimes class is just boring because you learn the same french you learned eigth grade year in school, EASY A!!!
In 2 words very badddddddddddd. Unprepared, unclear, boring, and unfair in the grading. Avoid his classes and if it is a prerequisit wait until someone else is teaching it.
At first he seemed nice, but as the semester went on he just got worse and worse,i dont understant why you cant change an 89.5 to a 90, is dosent make sense. Hes still ok.
The worst professor ever. Unprepared, boring, and unfair. He knows how to make you do busy work! Expect to have the worst grade ever, and you don't even know why or what you can do to improve it.
SOOOOOOOOOOOooo boring. If you give your input on anything, he will basically tell you that you are wrong, even if you know you are right. He is a jerk and only cares about the African kids in class.AVOID his class!!!!!!!!!!!
mangara is a very nice guy. however, he pretty much REFUSES to give A's unless he really has to. he assigns papers that require quotes, and if u dont use the exact quotes he wants u to use, ther goes your A. nice man, but tough teacher.
Those who criticize this prof are lazy. You work hard in his class, but he is fair and great.
Absolutely horrible. I dreaded going to this class. The class should have been called Africa & Sweet France. Don't count on talking about anything else other than the two subjects. I would aviod this prof. at all costs.
Horrible, unfair, and too much Politics...do youself a big favor - don't meet mengara...
I will admit that he is not an easy teacher, but he is very knowledgeable and wants you to earn your grade. He is always very willing to help you correct your mistakes for the next paper to do well. If you dont like him, you are probably lazy and just dont want to do work. Very possible to do well in hsi class.
Yes, a good grade is possible, but still he remains an extremely badddddddd teacher. Probably the worst at MSU!! What's wrong with those who gave him a good rating??? And nno I'm not lazy!!
I loved this professor, I can't believe all of these other comments (maybe its because I had him for a French class). I feel like I'm really actually learning and retaining stuff after this class. And he's so funny and cracks himself up all the time. I got A's on everything, HW and tests, I think if you put the work into it, you'll be fine.
Yea... a crazy amt of HW! Be prepared to work your ass off! He cracks himself up a lot which is weird! He's knowledgeable about the information but can be confusing someimtes. Decent prof.

Not sure what the other people were talking about, this class wasn't hard. He is, however, an extremely arrogant fellow. A class about Francophone Film turned into a class on the colonization of Africa. Not a good teacher, way too preachy, and a horrible class. Don't be misled.
Wonderful professor. Very willing to help any student looking for it. He will not seek you out and offer you help, but if you go to him, he loves it. Very nice, papers were pretty easy. Funny & intelligent.
Talks entirely to much, what could have been an interesting class turned into overkill. If your looking to fulfill a general education course take something else. He's wack.
very boring lectures and movies- bring your laptop and a list of fun websites/other work to do (esp for days when you dont watch a movie)...try to share the books with a friend cause you only use them once or twice (mostly for midterm/final) -not a predictable grader
BEST PROFESSOR(VIVEZ MENGARA)!!
I have mixed feelings on Dr. Mengara. He's not a terrible prof, but I don't feel like he was qualified for the class I had him for. Not always appropriate, but he's harmless and a nice guy. I probably would never take him again. Attendance is a MUST. And you never use the book. Maybe three times, but you NEED it those three times.
Really nice guy, strange sense of humor. His class is a lot of work and he expects a lot from students but if you work hard, you can get a good grade. Attendance is completely mandatory, so don't skip class! Expects a lot from students, but also wants them to do well, always available for help outside of class.
I had him for french 132 for fall 08 and thought that he was the world's easiest teacher. But, I had him for spring 08 and he changed so much. I love French and French classes ( I'm French Major), but this class is useless. I did homework for 16 hours straight just for his class.
arregeant and sick--he needs help! He want students to go through hell just like he went through in Africa, then he'll feel satisfied. uncapable of letting someone express their opinion. he is a dictator in the classroom. it's his way or the highway. Avoid his classes at all cost! It's a shame that our tax money support these jerks like him.
I've had him more than once and I agree he can be tideous. However, he's not a dictator and he does let others share their opinions. He may seem wierd at times but overall he's a nice guy. From experience he does not want students to suffer, he just wants them to learn and see things from a new light. Hard but worth it if u want to learn a language
I see that people have mixed feelings about Dr.Mengara. From my experience he is a great teacher, but he doesn't always make the best decisions about what he teaches. His class was a lot of work, but for me was great because it challenged me to learn. You need to have the basics and the drive to work hard. I will take him again cause I learned smtg
Great Professor, very nice guy and most of the time class was interesting. Wants students to participate and learn. He likes to challenge the class which is always good because you'll learn more French.
Figured I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and take him regardless of the comments, BIG MISTAKE!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN HELP IT! Entirely too difficult and it's his way or the highway. I did well in this class because I worked HARD. He is also an incredibly arrogant man. Thinks the title of "Dr." makes him god.
This class starts off very easy...you watch movies, comprehend it, and do his weekly assignments. He graded me A and B's and somehow I ended up with a C. Truthfully he is very unorganized, always tardy, very passionate, and grades slightly unfair. Be careful with this class, he sometimes loses grades for assignments, keep all records.Avoid@all costs
Mengara is by far the most horrible professor I have ever had! He is unorganized, obnoxious, arrogant, and very difficult to talk to. His grading system does not relate to any paper or presentation grades. It's like he pulls grades out of thin air. Do NOT take his classes. I swear you will regret it if you do!
This man is the most disorganized, unclear, unfair, egotistical professor I've ever had. He will want you to participate in discussion but will dismiss you if you don't agree with him. Don't take him but if you must, beware he chages the syllabus without telling you and won't tell you about the final. Keep everything you write cuz he WILL lose it.
Dear Dr. Mengara, I wasted my time by taking your class. He grades like an idiot. Basically, your grade is based on your attendance to class. If you email him with a problem, don't expect an answer back. He will lose your work. If you have an opinion, forget it, he won't understand. Only way to pass is if you are a teachers pet.
you guys dont get anything. you dont get what learning is. learning is hard work. dont think grades are just going to come on you and think life is easy sorry for you life ain't like that you have to work hard to get what you want. and sorry for you but he's a great great great teacher.
If you are seriously interested about learning french, take him, you will learn a variety of things. He is very strict when it comes to homework but hey, it's discipline. Yeah, I handed late homework and got penalized. Even so, he is very understanding and easy just do your work and TAKE NOTES. Exams are based on notes and be ready to make VIDEOS.
He's a great professor. I actually understand french now and he always offers to help!
If you already have a firm grasp on french, his class will likely be easier. But for beginning, he's a nightmare. His homework takes 7+ hours a week, due more than the amount of weekly classes you have, gives tests unannounced, only ever mentions a new concept once and is the least helpful professor i have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.
Very informative and the work is not that bad. Only problem is if he does not agree with your point in the writing assignments you do he will mark you down. He also comes up with grades out of nowhere.
Dr. Mengara's class is pretty okay but he does not care about u as a student. if u express any concerns u can forget him understanding what you're trying to say. he thinks he speaks english better than u. he is arrogant and will belittle u in any way that he can. he is not understanding, he's disrespectful and does not respect u as a student.
He has a little bit of an accent, but it's not difficult to understand him. He is very disrespectful to students. Take this class at your own risk.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER ! He has a policy if you come to class 10 mins late you will not get credit just if you are 2-5 mins late he also uses the 10 mins policy, and if he calls your name & your not in the class , LATE ! He gives 10-20 online homework plus worksheets and written work , I will not refer this guy to anyone in the future.
Teacher does not care about his students & expect you to know French as a beginner. I will advise to not take this teacher. I earn my B- by trying very very hard. Long nights doing homework just to pass his class. He assigns pages of french homework that is due next class & expect you to finish everything , when you have other classes to deal with.
He can be really disrespectful around when snow hits. He doesn't answer emails right away - maybe 2 days later, even, so you have 0 idea what the hell is going on, and then he'll further blame and dismiss you, which just adds to the overall frustration he already gives you.
If you think good grades come easy or on a platter of gold, I have one advice for you-STAY AWAY. But if you know that you have to work very hard for an A, and that DISCIPLINE and PUNCTUALITY are important, then definitely take Mengara. He is one of the best at MSU. Dear Dr Mengara, I'll take you over and over again because I know I'll learn a lot.
It is impossible to get good grades in this class, no matter how hard you try.
As a grad student, I took 5 out of my 10 classes with him. His knowledge of French colonialism is unrivaled and he always fascinated me during lectures. He expects his students to work hard. His writing intensive classes are not easy but you will be the better for having taken them! If you are looking to be a slacker, this isn't the class for you!
Mengara is very confusing and hard-headed with his assignments. The syllabus hasn't changed since the earlier 2000's, and he doesn't really teach to the needs of the student. He's very picky in what he wants, but gives no examples. He forgot about our class' final and was an hour late. There are no breaks in lecture. Would not take his class.
Mengara is a nice and friendly guy but gives INSANE amounts of homework. He expects you to pick up on things really quickly and complete like 20 worksheets of online homework. If you're the type of person who slacks off or doesn't do work, this isn't the class for you.
He does not care about the students. Makes no exceptions and grades very harshly. Each quiz is like a test and each test is like a midterm. Homework will take you minimum 3 hours per night and assigns about 30 assignments for the weekends.
French II was the absolute most difficult class I took in university. Mengara started off the very first class with a very positive attitude and made the subject matter seem less daunting. His explanations were always clear and he was always willing to explain things multiple times. Be prepared to study extremely hard and have a LOT of homework
Super sweet and very caring. Always happy to help but he does give a lot of online homework and worksheets. Learning a language does require practice so participate in class. He really makes class fun by making jokes and he really keeps the class alive. Don't miss class though, only allowed two absences. Best teacher by far!
Oh my, I enjoyed his class very intriguing. He is a harsh grader if the assignment is late you'll get a zero. The book is mandatory, I tried to get through the semester which is impossible, not really sure where he gets his grades from. Since the class was once a week, attendance is harsh on attendance. Very particular on his assignments.
The class isnt too hard, but the amount of homework he gives is ridiculous. 3-4different assignments for just for homework. Other than that not bad
Ive never done so much homework for a class. He will give 7-8 assignments for one homework. Wont annoy you for Attendance, but not safe to be missing class
Overall, the class is based on heavy lectures in which you zone out. Weekly homework(s) based on the lectures and are annoyingly time-consuming. Attendance is mandatory. Optional midterm and final. 5 page paper at the end of the semester based on the lectures. Honestly, this class is impossible to fail since he gives extra credit.
Hard but not impossible. Lots of homework, but the answers are online so it takes like an hour to do. Went to every class and shopped online the whole time. Lots of extra credit. Gives a practice exam before each exam that is almost exactly the same as the real one. You have to work for your grade but you can pass.
If you dont answer the way he expects you to (even if your answer is technically correct), hell mark it as wrong. Even if you submit the assignment on time, if you dont print it out he gives you half credit. His instructions are pages long/confusing. Hes knowledgeable, but not compassionate or sympathetic at all. Do not take.
homework takes more than 2 hours to complete , your quizzes will be like exams because it would be like 3 pages of questions and exams like a final , and with a final GOODLUCK , if you do submit your homework ON TIME but didn't print the Homework , you get HALF CREDIT Not full . Also , he is very picky with answers , Ilrn has been 100% completed
One of the most demanding professors in MSU. I would spend hours on homework assignemnts every week for a mediocre score. The grading was punitive to say the least. The worksheets he gave were lengthy and contained difficult critical thinking questions that he would grade for ACCURACY. If you can avoid it dont risk dropping your GPA on an elective
Wow, this man. Cool guy, not a bad person, but lord is he unorganized. Notes all over the board, we learned things out of order, and that is very difficult learning a language. Loads of homework all semester and the quizzes are basically mini exams. Dont skip class or youll be lost for the rest of the semester. Avoid if you can, if not goodluck.
MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS EARLY/ON TIME. He really cares about punctuality even though he is almost late everyday... He makes you submit work on canvas (there is no saving grace for late work so do it early!) AND print it off so get ready to waste so much paper. The quizzes and exams aren't hard if you take good notes and study beforehand.
The worst class and hardest class I have taken ever in my college LIFE. Such a harsh grader and way too much work. Do not take this as a free elective as all your time will be spent on this class. I tried so hard, and still got a bad grade overall. A few bad grades in this class will hurt tremendously overall. African politics class stay clear.
I dont recommend taking this class at all. The prof.s priorities seem to be students regurgitating his beliefs and precise terminologies rather than a thoughtful understanding of crucial course concepts. The class is a bore, assignments are frequent & annoying, and his grading system is absolutely terrible. Save your GPA, take another elective.
He's very intelligent, but is very disorganized in his teaching and assigns WAY to much homework for a required language credit
AVOID THIS MAN !!!!!!! He will just give you more HW and harder tests. You email him today he will reply it after 2 weeks. He is going to do nothing but make your life and grade worse..... AVOID !!!!
Professor Mengara is a great professor, youll learn a lot from his class. Be prepared to work and read, and make sure you dont miss class. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and the work is manageable. If you are willing to do the work, you will enjoy his class. He is also really funny.
If you want Anxiety, depression, loneliness, frustration, stress and anger. Take him as your professor. That's all I am going to say.
He is the worst professor i think i have ever encountered. No matter how well you do he will grade you so tediously that you fail. Not to mention he cant even speak french correctly. The entire class of mine despises him because he truly is an idiot. I could say more but they may remove my post for being too graphic.
My experiences with him were not pleasant at all. I don't recommend anyone taking French 101 with him. During the first two weeks, his class was manageable, but once you weren't able to drop his class, he became a totally different person (not in a good way). The workload is heavy and complicated. Overall, not a good and understanding person. RUN!!
I am not a GPA. person, I have never been the best person to maintain perfect scores or get the best grades. All around I am probably not your perfect role model student. But let me cut to the chase, if you need someone to remind you how hard you have to work or how much you still have left to learn. Professor Mengara has no problem keepin it real
Baby if you truly love yourself I recommend taking a different Professor. I took this class during the pandemic and absolutely hated every minute of it. Prof talks extremely fast and LOUD which sucked for me because I had to wear headphones due to my environment during the lockdown. Workload was crazy and he is such a picky grader. Extra credit tho
The toughest crater I have ever had. Do not recommend taking him, did significantly more reading and work in this course than any 300 or 400 level course I have taken. On top of the large work load, instructions are never clear, and his grading is nonsensical at best. Seriously, do not take this course. He is a nice man, but can be rude one on one.
Do not take this professor. If feels like he wants the class to fail. Every week the homework is long and super detailed. He will give a 0 if the homework isn't up to his standards. His standards are impossible to reach. He forgets that we have other classes and responsibilities. Attendance is mandatory. Cameras must be on he will call you out.
Dude sucks
I took Professor Mengara's Government and Politics of Africa course. Though the class is yet to be over, I felt the need to come here and talk about it. He is one of the worst professors I have had in my life. If you so choose to take this course, please make sure that you treat it as the only class that you have, because that's how he treats it.
The hardest professor I've encountered at this university. He treats this class like it's the only one you have. It's a graduate-level course, but I am an undergrad student and there is no distinction in grading/workload for non-graduate students. He's a very tedious grader and it's very difficult to get a good grade in his class. Smart, but tough
The hardest college course I have ever taken, gives tons of homework with long and confusing instructions. Does give extra credit to help you pass, but is very lecture heavy. He can be quite rude at times and talks down to students often but is not a bad guy. I would avoid him at all costs if you want good grades or low amount of work
This professor is horrible. He expects so much from you to the point where its almost impossible. Heaven forbid you email him to elaborate on his instructions( because he assigns us homework with the most long and confusing instructions) he gets rude and doesnt even bother helping to understand. dont take this class, youll regret it!
Absolute worse professor. He expects you to always attend class regardless of the circumstances and will fail you if you exceed 3 absences. Everything is done in French, and he expects you to retain everything from French one. He is an abysmal teacher who will assign 5 different assignments for the next class and then will still give you a quiz.
There weren't any tags that described how truly terrible a professor he is. He gives too much homework, and you will be overwhelmed. Attendance is mandatory no matter what and if you miss three classes you fail, also if you're late he will always reduce your grade. Overall the worst professor I ever had.
This class was brutal. This professor acts as if this is the only class you take, which is frustrating when you have 8 assignments due for each class. There was so much homework that was graded as if it were all quizzes. The classes were also just homework reviews. You'd be better off taking it with anyone else.
There weren't any negative tags to describe how truly terrible a professor he was.
This is the hardest class I have taken by far, HW takes forever to do, and we are constantly learning a new lesson every time we are in class, He truly acts like this is the only class students take.
TAKE ANYONE ELSE. I took this over the summer and it would be literally impossible to work while taking this class. There's always three worksheets plus other things like McGrawHill work or a quiz. Everything assigned one day is due the next morning. Of course it's graded by accuracy, not by effort. I took 101 just before and it wasn't this bad.
Professor Mengara is a great teacher. He explains to the class what he expects from the students and gives out extra credits. He is strict regarding attendance and being prepared for the online lectures. But he is a fair grader and when a student is struggling with a particular topic he is willing to help.
i did the bare minimum & got an A+. show up to class, skim through the readings, if there's a movie or video, watch it, or just read summaries. tell him what he wants to hear &participate once in a while. do ur best on the HW, just do it and u'll get the gist of the whole section. exams were open notes. gives EC. 7/10
Crazy amounts of homework. Be ready for sleepless nights
Assigns an absurd amount of homework for a level 2 course; I'm spending more time on French than I am on courses for my major. Classes are mostly homework review, and the instructions for the homework are lengthy and can be unclear. He doesn't answer emails a lot either, so asking for clarification won't help much.
Save yourself and do not take this professor. You are flooded with homework and multiple exercises on top of homework. Frequent pop quizzes and hard tests. You have homework multiple different times due throughout the week. Tough grader on top of it all.
Dr. Mengara was the most helpful and knowledgeable French professor I've ever had. There is a fair bit of homework but if you use your notes and the textbook, it's very easy and isn't time consuming in the slightest. He is very strict on participation and attendance, but if you tell him ahead of time, he will allow the absence. Take this professor!
I've had my fair share of professors. Some are amazing, some are meh, others are kin of in between. This professor is probably the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of being in his class. LOTS of homework, 15-30 DIFFERENT parts over the course of one week, DOES NOT respond to emails, pretty much wants to see you fail. Save yourselves.
Mengara's FREN112 class is no walk in the park - heavy workload with unclear homework instructions. But Unstuck study's study tools were a lifesaver. Worth it if you're serious about learning French.
Assigns a significant amount of homework over the week, with most consisting of you having to teach yourself the lesson. The entire class is spent going over the homework, and then you are on your own to teach yourself again. I like him as a person, but as a french professor he is difficult and leaves much to be desired. Most in class are failing.
I don't know why he has so many bad reviews. Yes this was one of the more difficult classes I've taken but I have learned more from him than from many professors here. Extremely knowledgeable in his field, and important content matter that about French colonization and African subcultures that is rarely taught about in depth enough. Take his class.
Kind, knowledgeable, but outdated style. Instructions were long, cluttered, verbose, hard to follow. Had to use AI to summarize. Strict Zoom rules: no stepping away, no bathroom breaks, cameras always on, called out students who were attending the zoom while in a car. No late work accepted at all, huge assignments. Stressful, rigid—would avoid.
If it's your first time learning French (as it was for me), do not take this course. He wants you to be at an intermediate level in 4 months. He doesn't know how much a textbook costs; he just wants you to buy it ($150). His lectures are good, can respond back fast through email, quizzes are easy, you need to spend every day to learn for tests.
This professor is knowledgeable and I found the material to be interesting and useful but I don't like his teaching style. He assigns a large amount of homework that you teach yourself first within a week or less (sometimes unclear instructions) then go over it the entire class each week. His work is very time consuming and overwhelming.
This teacher is completely unprofessional. He gives an insurmountable amount of work. Expects people to watch over two hours worth of video assignments in one day. He expects you to complete over 17 assignments on the first day is completely unreasonable I cannot not express enough, not take his class. Run for the hills.
he was the worst professor I've ever had. He assigns crazy amounts of work, 11 assignments due over a single weekend. The exams are extremely long and difficult, toward the end of the semester he stacks so much homework on top of a final, I hated this class with every fiber of my being
