He lectures on what students traditionally struggle with from the reading and his lectures always relate to real world problem and helping prepare us for careers He give difficult assignments but give out extra credit for learning from our mistakes making it possible to pass the class with a good grade. Some kind of late work policy would be nice
He's class is very fun and concise. I recommend this class to all students.
You have to really want to go into Economics to take him. Most homework I've received from a class. But there are a lot of resources to study for the test.
Honestly, he's one of the best teachers on campus. He's super funny and makes sure you know that he has a testimony. The exams are really tough on purpose but he helps you make sure that they don't tank your grade too badly. Make sure you do the readings and ask questions. He'd rather you walk away learning than having a good grade.
Moncayo is criminally overqualified to teach the course and you are lucky if you can learn from him. The workload is average, lazy students whine cause they let it build up. You will learn how to involve economics in your daily life. He knows economics well and he knows the Gospel well. People say he is dark, but his humor is all very PG.
Someone with his experience, schooling, and knowledge should be a billionaire. Instead, he decided to settle for a job with average pay to help us learn more about life than any other professors. He teaches unlike anybody else and makes every class extremely interesting. He's strict. Expects a lot from you because he gives a lot. Would take again!
He teaches you how to apply econ principles to your life, understand the world around you, become a more interesting person. Lectures aren't just him reading the book. He wants you to read on your own, then gives real world examples to help you better understand the material. His teaching method is superior to everyone else's. He's a gem!
He has an engaging teaching style and some intriguing perspectives on the topics learned in class. He's a hard grader on some of the assignments, but if you read the rubrics and complete each of the specific requirements you'll be fine. He could improve the course by remembering to assign groups for us to collaborate on the homework outside class.
Brother Moncayo was a great Professor! He is super funny and keeps the class entertaining. Each week of class is the same, doing group quizzes and in-class activities. The group quizzes I found to be really helpful as it was a good way to learn from others on topics I was struggling with. He also provides you with a lot of study material for exams.
Overall, Brother Moncayo's teaching style and commitment to his students' success make him a standout instructor. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in his class and would highly recommend him to others.
Brother Moncayo is a good professor that cares about his students but there are some downsides that I have noticed -He does not care about your GPA. You will learn a lot from him, but you have to really work to maintain a good grade. -He tests you on concepts he hasn't taught yet (15% Final Grade) However, he offers extra credit to balance it out
He is great for upper level classes but for someone who is only taking this course for GE it was not the best. Its very hard to pass and understand and it feels like he takes pride in having the class average for tests and things below 70%. Really funny guy but lecture wise i find him extremely difficult to follow and understand at times
This class will be difficult if you don't take the time to study and use all the tools Brother Moncayo gives you. He does a great job explaining the class's difficult concepts and provides extra credit opportunities to combat the difficulty of some of the assignments.
He is lecture heavy so be sure to write down good notes. Also will need to read the text book and be prepared to ask questions. He's really good about making you think outside the box. He cares about his students. Teaches you life lessons that other professors don't teach. Prepare, stay engaged, & embrace his real world teaching approaches.
He is a great professor that like to joke around but has tons of examples of real life and how that can help us. Those experiences help a lot in learning the material as well. One thing that helped me succeed in the course was having a group to work with for the homework and other assignments. I wish he could talk more about the explore assignments
Brother Moncayo is an awesome teacher. He is brilliant and genuinely cares about the success of his students. He is a very harsh grader so it is important to always look closely at the rubric and do more than you think is necessary because his TA is unforgiving. Work hard and you'll be fine.
I love the teaching style of this teacher. He doesn't only teach you economic principles, but he teaches you how to apply them in real life. I think that I have learned the most from the weekly podcast he has us listen to. His clear grading criteria has helped me a lot. However, I think that we could move through the topics faster during class.
He is great at lectures and learning by throwing you into fire. So I do feel like the assignments are hard but he explains things so well and if you have a desire to learn he will walk you through different concepts. Group quizes help me a ton! He has us take those after we have already taken it individually and I wish he would do the opposite.
I think he is a good professor, he teaches in a simple and great way to his students. He also focuses on real-life events to compare them to macroeconomic situations. He also tells you how to succeed in future jobs and what the market is focused on. The only bad thing about the class is that some homework problems are complex.
The in-class activities, lectures, and exploration assignments did a good job of connecting the material to real-world examples. You will not succeed without reading the textbook, paying attention to lectures, and reviewing the grading rubrics. This class will require effort. The course could be improved by moving due dates to Sunday.
Do not take his classes! Does not teach the material, and is only there to give his opinion and show how smart he is. I don't know why anyone likes him, the only thing you will get from class is some controversial entertainment. Loves to trick students on quiz questions and exams. Please save yourself some pain and don't take this class!
Brother Moncayo is a dedicated professor who really wants his students to succeed. His lectures are engaging and he provides a lot of helpful resources, though the class can be quite challenging. Stay on top of the readings and don't be afraid to ask questions. If you put in the effort, you'll learn a lot.
Professor Moncayo brings the material to life with real-world examples. Though challenging, the in-class activities and clear grading criteria make it worthwhile. Unstuckstudy AI was a game-changer for test prep.
So, I really like Brother Moncayo, he is a hilarious professor and helps us apply what we are learning to the real world. Although the class is really hard, and even though most is group work it still feels overwhelming. If you work hard you will probably be fine.
I really have enjoyed ECON 151 with Bro. Moncayo. One thing I love about the course that has led to a lot of learning for me is the homework assignments through mindtap. Something that has helped me to succeed is the resources on canvas. Only change I would recommend is a little less time on the explore assignments, shorter podcasts essentially.
Brother Moncayo is an amazing teacher! If you follow the rubrics closely then you should get As. The best part of the course is the weekly quizzes. The quizzes really help take what you just read and turn it into knowledge. If I had to change one thing about the course I would spend a bit more time on content and less time on current events.
Best Professor on campus. Funny, and cares about his students. He wants you to improve and learn and will show you the steps to do so. Never makes anyone feel stupid. Always enjoyed going to his class and recommended it to anyone I knew that was talking about taking econ. 10/10 would take again.
Brother Moncayo is awesome! his course is challenging and rewarding. He cares a lot about the students and is passionate about economics. His humor is very dark and very hilarious. If you need help he will meet with you and help you understand anything. He really gives informative lectures and the homework isn't too hard either.
Brother Moncayo knows economics. His number one priority is helping you to learn, and he will give you every opportunity to succeed. His lectures are always engaging and very beneficial.
very willing to help and he puts his students first. very organized class his dark humor was the highlight of my Tuesdays and Thursdays
The thing that led to the most learning for me in this class was letting us work in a group, this also was the biggest factor leading to my success in the course, working with my group weekly on homework and weekly quizzes was helpful. In this class I wish he would've maintained more structure in class, there was a lot of sidetracked discussion.
I like how Brother Moncayo pushes us to do better but he doesn't teach in a way that helps me personally understand the subject material.
His group quizzes are super helpful for understanding the chapters. You will do a decent amount of homework but its manageable and the best way to learn the material. If possible please add a direct link to the full book right after the Top Hat link in the Course Navigation Menu in Canvas, it would make it a lot easier to get to.
Brother Moncayo is great and is very passionate about what he teaches. He really wants his students to understand and is happy to answer questions with helpful feedback. At the beginning of the semester he warned against dark humor so I was very nervous and almost switched professors but it got better. His outlook on the future can be grim.
In class it feels like a conversation with your cool Econ uncle. he makes it safe to ask questions and mess up but learn and try again. its okay to be wrong because we're all learning. That's his vibe.
Good teacher. Class is difficult if you don't put work in.
Brother Moncayo is easily one of my top favorite teachers, he has great lectures and communicates with the class very well. It's actually more of a discussion than a lecture, and that's what i really admire about the class. Would definitely recommend.
The lectures and in-class quizzes helped me learn the most Something that is helping me keep up in the course is staying on top of the reading It would be nice if the TA or professor could leave feedback on the written assignments when I get things wrong There is a rubric, but sometimes I feel that I followed it perfectly and still get points off
Brother Moncayo is the BEST! He helps a tough subject become something you enjoy. He has provided many chances for extra credit and lots of other material that help you succeed. You need to note, he expects a lot from you. If you are hardworking and willing to put in the time to understand the course well you will do amazing. Definitely recommend!
Brother Moncayo provides a bunch of easy extra credit assignments which definitely helped me succeed in class. He also does group quizzes in class which helped me the most with learning the material The only thing I would change in the class is setting up group tables instead of having individual seats so groups can be more put together
The course is very well set up, with extensive resources and rubrics available to students. Professor Moncayo is super funny and entertaining, even when giving a lecture. Plenty of activities and ways to involve ourselves in the class. The subject matter is tough, but the teaching and resources make up for it.
Overall he is a good teacher. The in-class activities he has prepared are super helpful in learning the material and their real world application. He provides plenty of resources for test prep and is always willing to help answer any questions you may have. There is a lot of homework to do, but if you can stay on top of it, you'll be fine.
He explains a lot in class about the need-to-know info from the book. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he will make sure you understand. Take good personal notes of the equations and their relations to one another.
Brother Moncayo is an excellent professor. He explains the material very quickly, so come prepared. Working in groups is one of the most beneficial things in this class. Choose a good group and be willing to meet with them throughout the week. Allowing a segment of time in class to clarify questions over hard topics would be highly recommended.
I learned do much in this class!! This professor is great at applying concepts you learn to real life and situations that matter to you!!
He is very smart and all round a good teacher. But, I never felt prepared for the exams and a lot of learning had to happen outside of class on subjects that were never went over in class. But other than that, super solid class.
I absolutely love taking Econ 151 with Bro. Moncayo! Listening to the lectures really helped me enjoy and learn from this class. Bro. Moncayo's enthusiasm for economics is contagious. The TopHat assignments in class really help me to understand the principles by applying them. I think it would be great to link the rubric to every assignment.
Prof. Moncayo knows his material but his content delivery can be confusing at times. Generally, the content is understandable when paired with doing the homework. Try to keep a flexible mind with the topics discussed.
His class is well designed to help you learn. The modules are set up in a way that timeline of things and due dates were clear. Do the adaptive test preps. Applying the content makes a difference. I wish that there were more resources for practicing applying concepts. Sometimes I would memorize answers before I truly learned to apply a topic.
Brother Moncayo is a great professor but sometimes in class lectures don't have a direct lesson. He does some simulation type activities in class that were fun and really good for learning. I really like the way homework is managed and it helps a lot that we get to pick a group to work with for the se
I really liked the way that Brother Moncayo's class was set up. You only have 3 exams including the final, and they are only worth 30% of your grade. Make sure you pick a good group because he lets you do everything with your group. Take time on your homework, and quizzes because they are worth a lot of your grade.
While taking this class something I have learned is that you need to be present in class. If you are not paying attention or doing the readings then you will not understand what you are trying to do.
The discussion time after we do the in-class indicator has helped increase my ability to understand things that are going on in the world. Something that has helped me succeed is meeting with my group every week to do the weekly quiz. Having more time to ask questions specifically about what we learned in the textbook would be helpful.
Brother Moncayo is a great professor, hilarious, and discussions in class are very interesting. It is important to read to understand the material, and being active in groups will greatly help your understanding. Lots of indicator podcasts that aren't my favorites to do but will impact your grade.
I really like Dr. Moncayo. He talks about how we can apply what we learn to real situations. His TA was incredibly useful, and he is always happy to meet with me. He has plenty of resources to help you prepare for assignments. The lectures get off track sometimes, which can be bothersome. But, he is a great teacher.
He has you read a chapter online and take a quiz over the weekend then discuss the material in class the following week. I felt like I struggled with the online reading but the class lectures helped a ton with my understanding. I also really enjoyed the real world application and felt like everything taught was shown why it is important.
Brother Moncayo works very hard to make sure that his students are successful. He gives you all the resources that you need to be successful and he expects you to use them. Use the rubrics, the extra credit, focus in class, do the work, and you will be fine. It can take some getting use to his style, but once you do, it's honestly pretty smooth.
Professor Moncayo is a really good teacher, he cares about us and our success. My only hang up with the class is we tend to get off topic, and have long conversations about things that don't necessarily pertain to the topic of the day. But he cares about us, and has helped me personally with my struggles
The in class activities are one of the most effective learning activity for me. The groups that we made at the beginning of the semester helped me succeed in the course. I think that if the reading quizzes were worth less of the total grade.
Good professor. I enjoyed our in class discussions relating the material to how it is applicable to the real world. If you do the assigned reading it's a lot easier to succeed, however doing the reading is difficult and a lot at times. Some of the in class activities are graded harshly but there is extra credit offered.
Mr. Moncayo is a professor who supports his students, and cares about individuals. He encourages independent learning, participation, and reaching out. For me, the thing that helps me the most were the lectures. He teaches clearly and encourages questions/comments. He can improve on controlling the lecture, as the class can get off topic easily.
Brother Moncayo may be one of the best professors on campus. He only weighs 30% of the class on tests so that you can focus on learning rather than getting a good grade. All positive things aside, the only thing that I'd say is that it is kind of hard to get into contact with him outside of class. I have emails that have been left unread.
Brother Moncayo is actually probably the best teacher ever. Theres a lot of group work. What helped me was just taking it a little bit at a time. With the textbook just read a little bit of it each day instead of putting it off till Saturday. This class moves super fast so the only that I would change is spending more time on topics.
Brother Moncayo is an amazing professor who cares a lot about improving his teaching, the class, and the students he teaches. In my experience, he was always willing to answer questions and explain things in different ways to help us understand challenging concepts. His knowledge of economics is expert-level and very practical.
Brother Moncayo is great just read the textbook and do the assignments and you'll get a good grade. The textbook with the quizzes and interactive assignments was the most helpful to me. If there was one thing I could change it would be to not randomize the questions on the midterms and finals because I don't think it is fair.
Brother Moncayo is undoubtedly one of the most knowledgeable professors in the economics department. His classes are very informative and have tons of real-life applications. Always come prepared to class. I wish they graded more based on understanding instead of focusing on essay writing style; he tends to grade quite strictly.
He is a really good professor. He makes the lectures in class really interesting and is very helpful when you ask questions in class. He likes to keep everyone interested and involved in the class. However, his TA is a super tough grader and you have to check the rubric for every assignment in detail or you will be deducted a ton of points.
This class from professor Moncayo is a really fun class, especially if you come with questions. His goal is to help students understand the economy and the world to make smart real life decisions with a changing economy. It's really fun when you come with real life questions and ask him those questions.
Brother Moncayo does an excellent job at explaining important concepts in economics. He also likes to have students work in groups and discuss different topics. I really appreciate this because it helps the person receive feedback and learn in a engaging way. He is patient and wants all of his students to succeed.
He has us take weekly quizzes on things we learn in the textbook, which helps us remember a lot of what we did in class and what to expect on the test. Something he did that helped me was make the class an enjoyable place to be. He could do better on is not skipping through the slides with chapter information, that way we can write it in our notes.
This is a great class! If you're terrible at test taking you should take this class. Brother Moncayo weighs homework higher than exams. I really like how he has us listen to podcasts to learn what is going on in the real world. I also like how we can do a lot if the work in groups.
He's one of the funniest and most likeable teacher you'll ever have. He's well-educated but also says his personal out-of-pocket jokes in every lecture. He's a very good teacher and I would totally recommend him.
Brother Moncayo is great. I will say that the class can get overwhelming when you have an assignment due Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and two on Saturday and they all require a decent amount of time. The two assignments on Saturday can be a little much especially if you have a full class load. He does encourage working on as a group which some like.
The real world application activities for this class are helpful and teach you to consume the news more thoughtfully. The assignments are usually pretty rigorous, but there are clear rubrics about expectations to set you up for success. The textbook's search feature is bad but other than that this course is incredibly well designed and executed.
Brother Moncayo really does a lot to help his students. He has clear grading criteria and quite meaningful assignments, including applying class principles to understand contemporary happenings. One thing that could improve the course may be more assessments that are graded half on completion and half on accuracy.
If you are bad at taking tests, I would take this class from him because he weighs assignments higher than exams. On the first day of class, he might be a little intimidating, but he is very kind and hopes the best for his students. He is a great professor and expects you to read the book.
Brother Moncayo is a great teacher. If you do not like dark humor do not take his class. But if you are terrible at taking tests. I 1000% would recommend taking his class. He weighs the homework higher then the exams. If you attend all the classes, and do you homework you will pass the class.
Bro Moncayo cares about helping his students succeed. One course aspect I benefited from was the A+ chapter reviews to prepare you for tests. I would recommend setting up office hours with him if you are confused. He helps you learn how to learn for yourself. One thing I could've benefited from was more hands on activities.
He is a great professor, however he isn't an easy A. You have to work hard for a good grade. The class atmosphere is fun and makes it a lot easier to come to class. This is a homework heavy class rather than test heavy as Homework and Assignments are 70 percent of your grade.
Discussion-based. Most of the class is spent discussing the application of what we are learning; lots of Q&A. I find these interesting but many people don't want to spend their classroom time like that. assignments are lots of podcasts but this all has to do with his efforts to help us apply economics and what we are learning in class to our lives.
Brother Moncayo is a tough teacher, but he cares. If you put in true effort in his class, it will be very informative. He can be fairly blunt, but he will always root for you. He is hilarious and a bit irreverent, but his class is always interesting.
Brother Moncayo is such a great professor! His economic knowledge and understanding is one of a kind. He helped lead me to educational success! The class material wasn't too difficult and his teaching style is the best! I highly recommend taking a class from Brother Moncayo! I've learned so much from him!
Exams are difficult but don't affect your grade very heavily
He is an amazing professor and he gives you all the resources you need to be successful you just need to try.
He is a funny guy, likes to be funny, that was like the big thing when he introduced himself. He is edgy and I can't tell if it's an act or not but either way its fun.
Brother Moncayo is very easy to get along with and humourous. He listens well and is willing to answer whatever questions you have. He enjoys discussions in class. Assignments he gives are based on our reading and they way they relate really helps you apply the reading. I think practice work outside of the quizes and in class assignments would help
Bro Moncayo is a great professor, the only thing I'd say is lectures tend to get blurred by off-topic conversations. Most of what you'll learn comes from the textbook
Brother Moncayo is a great professor that knows a lot about the subject. The homework is what has helped me learn the most. Taking notes while doing the reading has helped me succeed in the class. One improvement that I would make to the course, would be less in class activities and more in class exam type practice problems through TopHat.
Bro Moncayo is very knowledgeable and is here to help us understand economics so we don't make mistakes with it in the real world. The class can be tough at times, but his approach to teaching helps you work through difficult topics and really grasp the material. Must use and read the textbook if you want to pass the class.
He's really unique, so be careful taking a class from him. It is nice that the exams are just like bigger versions of the weekly quizzes. This helped me to learn the most since we could review them and know where we errored. He offers a lot of extra credit to help students succeed. We just talk way too much in class to justify being there.
Brother Moncayo is a professor who you can tell does truly care about the subject he's teaching. With this the top things I'd say is understand this is very heavy class in the sense of group work. Also the test are only 30%, the quizzes are group open textbook. The only downside is the quiz is ahead of what you are learning is class.
Brother Moncayo came across at first as merciless! I thought he was not going to be understanding at all, and that he didn't really care about our grades. As time went on, I realized that I have never had a professor who has given us more opportunities to succeed than him. He wants you to not just pass his course, but succeed.
You'll learn a lot more in class by actively participating in the lessons he prepares to apply what you've learned in class and by following his advice to study together as a group.
He isn't afraid to express his views and beliefs on different topics.
Dr. Moncayo is an amazing professor. He is not afraid to say things that are true even if it is contreversial. He has open discussions about economics almost every class period which is where I have learned the most. Making sure to pay attention in class during lectures is key because he goes over the most important topics.
He talks a lot about politics and society in class. Very open about stuff. nice guy, but his TA is asinine and the class gets off topic a lot.
He's a pretty interesting professor for a school like BYUI. Solid human for sure and you can tell he actually cares about the future of his students. For Thursday applied assignments though, I feel like he forgets that reading and interpreting data on websites you've never used before isn't easy and a youtube video as a guide would help.
Brother Moncayo really cares about his students and genuinely wants to help us learn. His lectures and discussions are great but go over my head a lot. You really have to learn the material on your own in the readings.
Brother Moncayo is one of the best professors on campus, super friendly and will talk about almost anything if you need. His lectures are entertaining and informative. I really like how he incorporates group projects or discussions into his lectures. Sometimes he can get off topic with questions from the class but its not that big of an issue.
Brother Moncayo has a habit of making the most out-of-pocket jokes I've ever heard a professor say. Some expletives used. Grading for papers seems rather on the whim of the TA - I've gotten varying scores for repeat assignments without really changing what I am covering in the paper.
Brother Moncayo wants his students to succeed. He wont give you any freebees. But if you need to make up points or want to get ahead, he gives so many opportunities through extra credit. If you work, you'll get an A. But it takes effort. If you have questions, make sure to ask them in class or outside. Sometimes you run out of time in class.
Bro Moncayo is super funny and has a passion for his field. Truly wants students to succeed and teaches according to that aim. Very opiniated and a bit cocky but super fun and smart.
Brother Moncayo is an awesome teacher; he is so fun and will answer any questions given to him by students. He encourages you do the homework as a group. He also offers extra credit that is really helpful. The only thing I would advise is if you don't like dark humor don't take him as a teacher.
He is a good professor. He teaches the curriculum well, and he really wants his class to succeed. He's arrogant, but he shares a genuine passion for economics with his class. There are lots of redundant but relatively simple assignments to boost your grades and lots of opportunities for extra credits that amount to about an extra 4% on your grade
He will teach you what you need to know for life, which is good, but he does not prepare you for the exams. The average grade for his exams is like a C- or D. His class is really fun though and he is entertaining. I'll just say there's a reason we drink out of fountains and not fire hoses, and Brother Moncayo doesn't seem to realize that.
This professor knows what he is doing. He may be difficult, but he is methodical on his teaching and weights all grades properly. Very funny guy.
Brother Moncayo overall is a pretty good professor. It's a ton of group work and homework. Only main problems I had is a lot of the assignments that are a good amount of your grade honestly prepare you 0 percent for the test. Also pretty much no one in the class is ever prepared for the test and is shown through the test averages. Funny professor
Get ready to study the material all by yourself or with your group because everyone I knew in the class had to watch a different professor's lecture to understand the subject material in each chapter. I thought maybe it was me, but even the tutors I met said that was the professor they understood the least and always added, "but he was a cool guy".
Bro. Moncayo knows most of the people taking his class are only there because they have to, so he shows how what he's teaching is useful and applicable to you. His lectures are amazing, and he's always willing to answer questions and does his best to help you understand the answer. Passing is easy because 70% of the grade is participation
pretty difficult class but the professor was funny. the only thing that annoys me is its required to read the textbook and then in class most the time he just went over the textbook and I already learned all of it because I read the textbook and attendance is required. we did have some fun activities every once in a while though
Really funny teacher, lots of extra credit opportunities. Teaches relevant concepts outside of just course curriculum.
Very knowledgeable in his field and SO funny! Look forward to going to his class. Tons of homework and busy work.Very time consuming and don't help on quizzes/tests, but give valuable life skills and knowledge.Told us he was expecting an average of 60% on the midterm like he was setting us up to fail, BUT offers SO much extra credit opportunities!!
Lectures provided are very helpful and important for you to attend. Reading the textbook thoroughly helps you succeed. Not much I would change, but maybe include a little more activities during class rather than longer lectures.
Bro. Moncayo is a great teacher that will push you to your potential. Using the website's practice quizzes helped me learn and retain the material. Visit his helpful TA's for ANY questions. The podcast points don't feel rewarding for my work, but maybe it's because I overthink the answers. Start working hard and never stop!
Brother Moncayo is great. He has a PhD in Economics and is very knowledgeable. He is hilarious with a very dark sense of humor. Don't take him if you get offended easily. Put in the work on assignments and go to class and you will be successful. He offers extra credit as well which is worth doing. I enjoyed the layout and presentation of the course
The in-class activities and quiz reviews were the most helpful for learning, making complex concepts easier to understand. The TAs were a great resource, providing valuable support outside of class. One improvement would be adding more structured exam review sessions to help students reinforce key concepts and feel more confident before tests.
Brother Moncayo is an awesome teacher. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There's quite a bit of homework but most of it is helpful for learning the material.
I learned a lot through his explanations and examples in class. You will have to do a lot of homework so be disciplined. It would be perfect if it were not for the amount of homework I had in this course.
Lots of TA, homework assistance, course transparency, and help available to help you succeed. Daily in class, he gave us career advice and taught us how to use what we were learning to make decisions for our future, this helped me learn because it mattered more to me. The only change I would make to the class is adding more problems to homework.
Bro. Moncayo is a great professor. His teaching style is fun and his class is engaging. I think he has a cool perspective because of his experience and the way he drives us to pay attention to data to make decisions for our future. He encourages group work, so pick a good group because it makes or breaks your class experience and your grade.
brother moncayo is super nice and chill! the ta's help a lot with the homework and the work isn't too bad if you stay on top of it. the lectures are nice and brother moncayo is very knowledgeable, but I feel like in class work doesn't translate to the tests and quizzes so you have to do a lot of learning on your own.
The thing that helped me learn the most in this class was the readings and the podcasts. Throughout the semester, I utilized my time and went to tutoring and it was the most helpful thing in succeeding in the course. It would have been nice if we had more class time to discuss topics that we were struggling with.
Brother Moncayo is a very knowledgeable professor. His passion and teaching style helped me learn the most. He also let us work together in study groups on quizzes and homework, which is very helpful. The only thing I'd change is how the explore assignments are graded, but even then, talking with the TA resolves a lot of issues that come up.
Brother Moncayo is an excellent professor, ensuring we apply class principles to daily life. The class discussions, paired with what was taught in the book were the things that most helped me learn. Being prepared is what makes the difference between being successful or not. One suggestion for the course is to have a more easily accessible rubric.
Brother Moncayo is a funny professor who genuinely cares about Macroeconomics. This course is HARD. There is really no way around that. For the class being as hard as it is, I think he tries to tackle it in the best way. There are so many extra credit opportunities to bring your grade up. This is very much a "you get out what you put into it" class
He is very willing to answer your questions and wants to make sure you understand how to apply the course material to the real world. You will have to read one chapter of the textbook every week and take good notes because we dont cover everything in class. The class is very entertaining and I am going to take another class from him in the future.
The course is hard, but not in a way that feels unnecessary. Brother Moncayo runs a tough but fair system with this class; stay on top of the outside work, and you'll be fine. Making the rubrics for assignments a little more accessible/visible would be a huge help. Like other reviews have said, you get out of the class what you put in.
I would say that reading the textbook and doing the homework has lead to the most learning for me. Make sure that you read the textbook! Also you need to participate in class and always be paying attention. I would say that the teacher needs to go over more material in class. I get reading the textbook, but also go over the material.
If you're looking for the best Economics professor at BYUI, I highly recommend Dr. Benjamin Pacini. His teaching style, knowledge, and care for students make him stand out. Unfortunately, Moncayo didn't measure up and left a lot to be desired as a professor. Go with Dr. Pacini if you want to actually understand Economics and enjoy the class.
Daniel Moncayo is an incredible professor. I have learned so much from him pertaining to economics and pertaining to life and all in all I have been inspired. A tough class but you will actually learn about real life economics.
Brother Moncayo is awesome! Genuinely I feel like he treats all of his students the same and desires their long term career success. He is super funny! He does not take any crap though, so if you don't put in effort into your assignments, the grade will reflect that. I very much enjoy what I learn though, and I always learn a ton in the class.
Brother Moncayo is great. I really feel like he helped me grow in terms of my knowledge of economics as well as the kind of person I am. Meeting with groups really is so helpful, if you meet with your group at least once a week, your grade will improve. Sometimes its hard to know what to write down for your notes though.
Brother Moncayo is awesome. He really cared about his students and is always willing to help you understand better the content. It is important to read the chapters before the class so you are not lost. I really like that he wants you to be invested on the material and he has different activities to do so.
He is such a fun teacher! He helps us learn and enjoy learning!
You wanna learn the concepts, take him. If not, don't. We spend at least half of the class discussing real world topics and examples. I learned mostly because he makes us listen to a lot of podcasts and relate it to economic concepts. I succeeded by going to the TA and staying 5 days ahead in homework. Only thing I would change are shorter podcasts
Hey was absolutely incredible! He was such a good teacher and helped me understand each of the concepts in class. He did a good job at relating what we were learning to real world problems.
It's been one of the hardest semesters for me, but even if I was at my best, I'd still struggle with the writing assignments. I understand their importance, but the TAs grading it can be particular to their preferences. Although, Bro Moncayo and all his TAs are willing to take another look at a grade if you really feel that it's not accurate. 100%!
Brother Moncayo is very passionate about economics, which makes the class more enjoyable. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities as well, which is really nice and makes the class less stressful. I definitely recommend getting together with your group and meeting with the TA weekly. These two things helped me a lot.
Brother Moncayo gave an odd impression at first but his class grew on me. He really knows his stuff and is an all-around good guy. Get ready for weekly podcast assignments and a fair amount of independent learning. Very willing to answer questions during class about the material. Group work is key to having a good experience in class.
Brother Moncayo is every part funny as he is serious about the class he teaches. The class activities are crucial to understanding economic concepts. He's very generous with extra credit and encourages us to learn from our mistakes instead of punishing us. I think he's a strict but effective teacher. He cares a lot for the futures of his students.
Taking ECON 151 from Moncayo has been very rewarding. My advice, if you want to understand economics and stand out in the labor market then take it from him. If you are looking for an easy A with minimal effort do not take his class. He offers a great deal of extra credit to counteract this. I recommend attending the TA office hours to succeed.
I like the way Brother Moncayo teaches. He's engaging and has a lot of actives to help you understand the concepts. I appreciate that your grade in his class is based on the work you do, and less on tests. I am not a great test taker, so I like not having to stress as much over tests.
He has strong opinions about us having a good major, he wants us to go into Economics... (I'm in Marketing so no). He just talks a lot about his past growing up in Ecuador and doesn't stop talking about it. We are in groups of 3-4 and work on assignments together in class. Midterm and Final tests are in the testing center.
Heavy workload. Had to listen to 2+ podcasts and the textbook weekly. Professor Moncayo is very knowledgable in economics. If you enjoy economics you will love his class, if you don't you will struggle a lot. He does not teach very much of the exam material in-class and instead teaches more general life and career advice as it relates to economics.
Brother Moncayo is an amazing professor! He uses in-class activities to help you understand the coursework and network with other students. There is quite a bit of homework, but it helps you accumulate more points, so if you miss something, it doesn't hurt too bad. He is pretty understanding and will give you life and career advice!
Brother Moncayo is an awesome teacher. He requires a lot of effort, but he really cares about his students. He has clear grading criteria and lots of resources to help you study for exams. I have learned the most from the incredible discussions he has had in class that have opened my eyes to how I can find success in the future.
His class is designed for students to be able to apply concepts of Economy to real life. It helped me keep interested in economics. I enjoyed listening to the Podcast every week. You can learn and understand how the world is moving from an Economic perspective. If you participate in class and put effort into your homework, you will get a good grade
The part of the course that I learned the most from was about GDP. I had a general concept of it before, but this course solidified it. One thing that helped me do well in this course was reading the textbook before class and coming prepared to take notes. Something that could improve this course is review days before the exams.
A well-designed course. I learned a lot from the interactive textbook and the Indicators. Highly recommend reading the textbook, taking notes, writing down the formulas, and meeting with the TAs. Clarify what the TAs are looking for in your assignments!! Improvements: Have a few more extra assignments if TAs grade hard.
I really enjoyed this class. Brother Moncayo knows a lot and teaches it in a way that is fun and easy to learn. The assignments can be time consuming, but nothing was too hard.
In order to succeed in this class you need to read the textbooks and show up. Brother Moncayo does a really good job at making this class interesting and his classes are genuinely fun to go to. He is a TOUGH grader but all of his rubrics are accessible to you. He's a high expectations professor and genuinely wants you to succed in life.
Brother Moncayo is a good professor. He's funny and entertaining. It's not an easy class. You need to read and study the textbook before lectures. Pay attention to the formulas in each chapter. The homework and assignments take time and effort. The lectures are actually engaging and worth going to. Recommend for econ majors.
Brother Moncayo has such a passion for economics! Best advice I have is to really utilize the time you have with your group. The group quiz and the homework is much easier all together. Just know that this class takes time but once you get into the groove of things it all comes together.
This professor is a TOUGH grader. He expects the best out of you and you will not receive a good grade by mindlessly going through his class. Brother Moncayo will most likely force you to grow if you take him. However, he has some wonderful tools for his students to use to help them get a good grade. Just expect those tools to take a while.
I really liked the in-class discussions, I learned so much more then what was just in the textbook. The principles we talked about changed the way I plan on living my life. Bro. Moncayo stresses the importance of working together as a group, and while it's sometimes annoying, it's also super helpful. The indicator assignments feel like busy work ):
Brother Moncayo is great. He is super out of pocket but if you like that kind of humor he is a lot of fun. He cares a lot about you actually being able to develop useful knowledge and technical skills so you can add value when you leave school. He us always open to having one on one conversations about class material or other topics.
He is probably one of the smartest teachers you will have. Very funny. Will push you out of your comfort zone.
I absolutely have enjoyed Professor Moncayo's class and his teaching style. His teaching style is smooth and easy for us to understand. He cares about his students and he wants the best for us. He is very fair. As long as you are persistent and do all your assignments you will be able to enjoy this class and get a good grade.
Brother Moncayo is awesome, I hate economics but he actually makes it interesting. You can tell he puts a lot of work into his lectures and in class activities. I learned the most from showing up to class and participating in the discussions and activities. One thing that will help you succeed is to make a group and work together on assignments.
He is able to take larger complex topics and bring it down in a way that makes sense and has some humor in there as well. There are a few assignments that seem a little pushed to do which can create slight busy work, however the point behind them can make character changes that are long lasting so I would never take them out. He's incredible!!
He's really invested in student's futures, and especially in making sure they know how to look out for themselves once they've left college. Since the readings are supplemental, the classes themselves have a lot of focus on why the things we learn are relevant to our lives, and how we can use that knowledge to our advantages.
He has a darker sense of humor, so if that is not for you, then DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM (he'll tell you the same thing). He's a phenomenal professor who genuinely cares about his students' success. All the work seemed daunting at first, but his schedule is very consistent, which helps the workload feel light. You'd have try to fail his class.
Daniel Moncayo respects his students a lot and wants us to succeed. He teaches very well and makes sure to explain the context very well.
His lectures and the reading are helpful & I love when he lets us ask him questions! His rubrics are helpful & it helps to work ahead in his class. I like the way he handles quizzes/exams. The reason I won't take another class from him is because economics is super difficult for me. He uses dark humor so don't take his class if you don't like that!
Leverages rate my professor for extra credit, these scores are skewed.
He knows his stuff and focuses a lot on real-world applications. His tests are meant to judge your depth of knowledge, rather than what you can memorize, so many of his questions are designed to "trick you" or make you think farther than you would typically assume. However, he does provide a tremendous amount of resources to help you.
Brother Moncayo is an incredible teacher who genuinely cares about the well-being of his students. Took the time at the beginning of the semester to have one-on-one meetings to get to know each other better. He is also the only real teacher at BYUI, he isn't afraid to say what needs to be said. Class is perfectly set up for our success.
Professor Moncayo is respectful, fun, and truly cares about our learning. He gives extra credit, which motivates us to focus more on assignments and understand the material better for exams and class activities. He's always supportive and wants us to succeed. Just maybe adding more real-life examples could make it even better.
His class is very informative, and he pushes you to become educated in the world of economics. One of my favorite things about his course is his emphasis on discussing current economic issues. But sometimes he assigns long podcasts and an assignment that will ask questions about specific dates and quotes. But he gives tons of resources to help too.
He allows you to do things with a group outside of class. I highly recommend making a friend or two and getting together to do any homework or quizzes, it could be the difference between passing or failing. He also doesn't weigh the tests too heavily which is really nice if you're not a great test taker.
I think Brother Moncayo is a great teacher. He sometimes gets distracted by interesting economics topics, but it makes class fun. If you read the book weekly, it's easy to get an A. If you don't, you'll miss a lot because class time isn't enough to cover everything. He cares a lot about students. If you don't like dark humor, don't take him ;)
This class is hard, there's no way around it. However he gives many unique opportunities and ways for you to increase your grade. If you are a poor test taker this class is for you. One they are very forgiving, and two they make up very little of your actual grade. Also get ready to read because in this class you blow through material fast.
Brother Moncayo is an amazing teacher who wants us to understand the concept, not just memorize it for a test. He is intelligent and has a wealth of great insights for the future and various career paths.
Brother Moncayo's lectures are engaging and fun, and the assignments are pretty manageable. However, the class discussions often go off-topic, and he doesn't always cover the material from the textbook directly. While the conversations can be interesting, it can be hard to learn the actual course content from the lectures alone.
Participation leads to the most learning. Moncayo puts time and effort into making in-class activities interesting and engaging. Paying attention and participating helps cement the material. There's a page long paper due almost every week which kinda blows but he has a fair way of letting students make up lost points through extra credit.
If you want to fail this class, no matter the professor, do not read the textbook. If you want to succeed, read the textbook. To add to that, learn from Dr. Moncayo because he teaches clearly from the textbook. Dr. Moncayo is incredibly intelligent. I would request that he apply concepts to students' lives to help us think on the same level.
When coming into this class I heard that Moncayo was a very interesting teacher that would be pretty funny. The main objective of Moncayo is that we learn the topics so we can adapt in the future socio-economical world. If you take advantage of what there is in the class, you can both enjoy and earn the grade that you would want to get.
Brother Moncayo is a great teacher and wants his students to succeed. It can be a challenging class, but he gives several opportunities to earn extra credit. If you want to succeed in the class, you need to read the textbook! He is very knowledgeable in economics and wants everyone to understand the application, so there will be some activities.
Brother Moncayo is a great professor. He really tries to teach the students to understand the concepts as well as make sure students are aware of what goes on in the real world and be prepared for it. The discussions in class are super insightful. For me the concepts didn't click, but the tutors are really helpful. The grading has high expectations
Brother Moncayo is a funny guy that cares about you and the material. He encourages you to work in groups, so If you do you will get a lot out of this class. One things that can improve is including the rubrics and other recourses within the respective assignment. Do read the text book in this class, it helps a lot.
Brother Moncayo is a knowledgeable guy. That being said, students take advantage of that and ask questions (sometimes dumb ones) to which he is willing to respond. By the time we get back to the lecture, there is little time to complete in class assignments or quizzes. This is a self-learning class. I learn more from going to the TA than to class.
Brother Moncayo is very passionate about his subject and makes it easy to want to learn. He encourages you to do homework in groups outside of class which has been super helpful. Keeping up with the textbook reading is critical to understand the content because of the way the lectures are organized. This is a very well structured class.
Initially, Bro. Moncayo may come off as a bit intimidating in regards to workload, but he cares for his students and their long-term success. He offers extra credit, and weekly quizzes can be taken with your group. Earn extra credit by meeting with a class tutor. I set up a weekly recurring meeting and that helped the concepts click!
Bro. Moncayo is a fun and engaging instructor who teaches chapter materials based on real-world examples, making the class non-boring. The exam is challenging, but you can have many extra credit opportunities that you can allocate for exams. Be in class, because it is the key to success to get the gist of each chapter and get a good grade.
Brother Moncayo is a really intelligent professor with a unique background that adds to his teachings. Grading is strict, but there are a lot of resources given to succeed. Tests are a small part of your grade, but there is a lot of homework outside of class.
Bro. Moncayo is a fun and engaging instructor who teaches based on real-world examples, making the class a more enjoyable experience. Exams are heavy, but you can have many extra credit opportunities that you can allocate to your exams. The key to success in this class is to attend every class and take good notes. Prepare by reading for the class.
A good professor that is willing to teach you. Requires some effort and be prepared for class by reading the chapter. Some assignments that can at times feel pointless, but his extra credit system is extremely valuable. He covers the content thoroughly and cares about each of his students understanding the material.
Bro Moncayo is very passionate and an expert at what he does. He is a tough grader, but if you follow the rubric precisely and visit with the TAs for any clarifications, you will do well (and get extra points!). The textbook is interactive and user-friendly, with lots of short fun videos. His assignments are based on real-life application.
He is very knowledgable about economics but he only covers some of the material you need in class. The way to pass the class is by spending a good amount of time in the textbook and on the weekly quiz. There is multiple assignments due each week that accumulate to roughly three papers a week. He is a very tough grader but does provide clear rubrics
He's a great professor and makes class enjoyable. He focuses on the harder stuff, so you'll learn a lot on your own, but it's totally manageable. He truly cares about his students and is always willing to help with anything, econ or life in general. I wish I could say more, but I'm limited on words. So summary: he's great and I really enjoyed him!
This course was very difficult for me. What helped me the most are the in-class lectures. Brother Moncayo has a very unique teaching style and tells it how it is. I really enjoy this and like it this way. What has helped me succeed is reading the textbook before class. One improvement I would suggest is to make the pre-class quizzes less weighted.
Brother Moncayo is well-versed in Macroeconomics and is passionate about teaching us the skills and knowledge necessary to be economically literate. He makes this clear from the beginning, so while the workload may seem tough, it's doable and just takes time to complete. Take your time to understand the concepts, read the book, and ask questions!
Brother Moncayo is the best. He makes class super fun by relating class material to personal experiences and world events. He always makes sure to answer student questions, which I think is super helpful.
This class has honestly been great. While the concepts can be difficult to understand, Brother Moncayo does really great at making sure everyone understands what he is teaching. One big thing for this course is to make sure you read the textbook. Without it you're going to be a little lost.
Brother Moncayo is extremely knowledgeable about economics, and he makes learning interesting. Make sure you look at the rubrics and follow them exactly, because the grading is pretty strict. The only critique I have is that the rubrics are not shown on any of the assignments, you have to search for them in the modules which can be pretty annoying.
Brother Moncayo is probably the most knowledgable professor at BYUI. His teaching style is amazing and he truly wants the best for you in life. The best part of his class is when he opens the floor to questions and just talks about anything we want to learn about in the world of Econ. You learn so much from him and I would recommend him to anyone.
Brother Moncayo is a great professor, not a normal one. He's not afraid to go against the grain and say what he feels is right, even if unpopular.Multiple attempts on the homework helped me really dial in my understanding of the chapters. I think staying ahead on homework and reviewing the material before exams is mega important.
Brother Moncayo is the best. He's real, cares, and explains things clearly. I hated this class with my last professor, but now I actually enjoy it. He gives breaks, uses humor, and sets you up to succeed with clear rubrics and structure. He makes econ make sense. Take his class!
• Clear rubrics, structure, and 5-min breaks • Explains econ in a way that actually clicks • Failed this class with another prof...now I love it • Moncayo is real, funny, a little out of pocket (in a good way) • You'll pass if you show up • Would love a personal project to tie macro to hobbies/passions
Brother Moncayo is one of the best professors at BYU-Idaho. He genuinely cares about your future as a student and wants you to succeed. He gives you all the tools you need to pass his class. If you show up, do the reading, and do the homework you cannot fail his class!
He has a really dry sense of humor so be prepared. but he truly cares about his students and does his best to set them up to get the best grade possible
He's a great teacher. He's willing to discuss tough subjects and questions and always provides an answer. He's a funny guy and is easy to talk to. The only difficult part about class is that your learning is pretty dependent on your time outside of class.
Brother Moncayo is a good professor, his teaching skills do not directly line with how I learn best but he takes time to answer your questions thoroughly and will explain it simply and apply it to your life. I would encourage 151 to be taken by him especially if you're ok with asking questions in class. HW heavy not exam heavy....so do the HW
Loved him! Super intelligent guy and clearly loved teaching. His class is very difficult however he gives a lot of extra credit to make up for it.
He is a very funny, blunt, engaging, purposeful, technical, and applicable professor. He wants you to succeed with confidence in what is being learned and efficiency. It is not easy, but it is worth it. You get out of it, what you put in.
I really like Bro Moncayo as a person, but I will say I learn nearly nothing in his class. His class is very much just a Q&A. But, he cares a lot about your future and will answer any question you have.
I am just doing this for extra credit, but he really is a great teacher. Brother Moncayo is funny and really enjoys what he teaches. He will make sure you understand what is taught, which is by no means difficult, just a lot of definitions. His TA's are also really great.
Brother Moncayo is a very funny and knowledgeable professor who provides you with all the necessary information and resources to succeed. You'll get out of this class what you put into it. There is a good amount of group work in his class, which makes the workload more manageable. The course would be a bit better if there were pre-exam reviews.
I can definitely recommend taking Brother Moncayo's class. The assignments that are due each week are consistent and relatively easy to manage. We work in groups on many assignments, which make things a lot easier. He also gives a good amount of extra credit assignments which prove to be quite helpful. I believe he handles this class exceptionally.
Reading is super important in this class. Doing the reading and then actually paying attention in class will get you the best learning out of the class. One thing that could be improved in the class is having more inclusion in the class and more activities where students act or represent the economy.
Make sure to read the textbook then try to apply learning in class. Bring outside reading in and ask questions to make it applicable to daily life. He does sometimes waffle about things but always about important things happening today economically.
I dropped a softball professor to take Brother Moncayo's class. It was a challenging and intense learning experience, but unlike my previous professor, I was actually learning. I wish that he taught formulas using Excel, but that's my personal preference. If you want to actually learn economics, take Moncayo.
He is a great teacher. Macro Economics is very hard, but he makes it as interesting as it can be. Take every opportunity to do extra credit and go to a tutor. You will need it. If you actually try in this course you will learn alot. He is also very funny and will go over current events in relation to economics which I found incredibly interesting.
We learn a lot in person, and it really matters to make it to class. One thing that will help me in the 2nd half of class is participating more. I think maybe make an extra credit tab with a description of how to get points, since there is a good amount of them to get.
You can tell he genuinely cares and wants you to pass but know it's not going to be an easy A. He is understanding and funny.. If you are in Macro Econ, 2 hours of busy work weekly, hardly talk about in class and not on test. Gotta take notes on the book and in lectures and do outside studying in order to perform above average on the midterms (70%)
Brother Moncayo is very good at helping you understand how economics relates to you and why it is important for you to learn. Sometimes understanding class instructions can be difficult, so make sure you just check the rubric. He gives you a rubric for every assignment. I would also stress learning the equations and how to solve for the math part.
He teaches so you can learn and understand, he gives lots of resources to help, whether you succeed is your decision
Brother Moncayo is an amazing professor. His class seems really daunting at first, but as long as you participate, you are given exactly the tools needed to succeed. I would recommend taking his class in the future, just be prepared to do the work, and he will help you down the path he has paved for his students.
Brother Moncayo is a wonderful professor. He teaches what you need to know, but understand that he doesn't give you an A just because you deserve one. You have to work for your grade in all reality. One thing that helped me was to review the chapters after taking the quizzes. He makes econ fun. I would hope he would change group work to really work
Moncayo's the best, I have learned applicable knowledge from his fantastic lectures. He keeps things entertaining. Important to read the textbook and complete everything based on the rubrics given. If you do the work on time and with good effort you'll be golden. Take advantage of working with a group. Especially on the reading quizzes and ICAs.
Attendance is mandatory. The instructor really focuses on understanding concepts and their importance, not just memorizing. Exams can be tough since there aren't reviews, and you're expected to use tutoring for prep. Great for learning, but you have to put in effort outside class.
I like this class because the teacher makes time for Q&A on any economic topics. That helps me to increase my curiosity. Reading the textbook before the class is essential, and understanding 90% of the chapter, and he will fill in the last 10% in class. Although it'll be better if he uses the textbook more in class to show where it is important
Brother Moncayo cares about your success. He is generous in his grading policies and he encourages group learning. His classes are entertaining, he is a no non-sense kind of guy, and he expects you to take responsibility for your own learning. If you truly want to learn and are willing to put in the work for it, take Brother Moncayo's class.
The online textbook is convenient and the extra credit system is amazing! You get one side of a 3x5 notecard for exams, and following the resources helps you succeed. I appreciate how participation counts more than in other classes. Some class step-by-step walkthroughs were helpful but felt too complex for the time given. He cares for his students!
This class is so fun! I'm learning a lot about economics, and he's very good at applying it to the real world and current events that are going on. Please read the textbook, take notes and go to tutoring, even if you don't think you need it. If you don't you will not learn everything that is going to be on the exam.
He was great. I love how he opened up the class for questions to talk about the econemny. His humor is great and he really cares about helping you learn instead of just giving pointless assignments. I wish he would do a review day before tests though.
Brother Moncayo will sit down and ask students what questions we may have about Economics. He is tough only in the sense that he expects us to be professional in our work and to put forth diligent effort in the class. If you want to genuinely learn, he is the teacher who will help you with that. The TA's host review sessions / tutoring for all.
The course component that lead to the most learning was learning about supply and demand and also productivity. While some of the other components were difficult one of the biggest things that helped me was our group we would do things with in class. The text book is us full but having optional practices quizzes would help with repetition.
He shared many helpful insights for our future lives based on his economic views. However, you really need to read textbooks and understand concepts from the class well on your own for your tests because he sometimes takes a lot of time sharing his current political insight, which I enjoy a lot.
This class is hard. There are a lot of moving parts. But Brother Moncayo makes sure that you have all the information that you need. His lecture help explain the class very well and he uses real life numbers. The reading is very important to learning the material. I wish that he had more reviews before the exams.
I really appreciated how he related the concepts we were learning in class to real life. He cares about your sucess and gives lots of helpful advice. Doing the readings, staying caught up on homework, and working with a group was what helped me through this class. As long as you're willing to put in effort, this is a great class to take!
Note: Get ready to be super thorough on your assignments, or you'll get a couple points knocked off. Otherwise, you can tell he really, really cares about his students' success in class, and especially in real life. He has frequent Q&A's for his opinions and thoughts on the state of the world and on our education. Great guy and great teacher!
Brother Moncayo is an amazing professor. One thing I love about this class is that there are a variety of ways to learn. There are readings, quizzes, lectures, in-class activities, projects, group work, individual work, and so much more. I have been able to learn more than I usually would in a course because of the course structure he has set up.
The course was relatively easy if you read the textbook before class. Study. Ask questions. He is an awesome teacher and a very smart person. Dont be afraid to ask questions he has all answers. Hes very funny and you will most likely enjoy his class if you like economics.
This class is hard. If you follow the rubrics for assignments, ask questions, read the textbook, go to tutoring, and take good notes, you can succeed. He truly cares about his students and wants to help them learn and grow. Don't be afraid to ask questions; he loves them. It would be nice if he used the textbook in class more to explain terms.
Brother Moncayo is fun and caring. For exams, he doesn't do study guides but the online textbook he uses has tons of practice test questions which really helped me prepare for the exam. There are tons of opportunities to receive extra credit in his class, which can be used toward absences(he is a bit strict on class attendance) and exams.
I like the way he teaches this class. I thought he was a boring professor, but he is funny and sweet! While attending his class, I learned how to apply economic principles to my life, which has broadened my perspective. Yes, there's a lot of homework and math, but it's one of those classes you should take because it offers many valuable takeaways.
His class is more than just lectures; it teaches us how to explain what we've learned and how to apply it to real life. You also learn many things besides just econ. Because of this, there is a lot of homework and the tests are very difficult, so you need to spend a lot of time to maintain your grade. However, I think it is worth the effort.
He does a great job of having us learn on our own. He also teaches us good skills that we will be able to implement even after graduation. I just wish he would slow down a little more when explaining things like equations.
I love that Brother Moncayo is real and doesn't sugarcoat anything. He truly cares about his students and he makes sure to clearly communicate all of the things that you need in order to succeed in his class. Take advantage of the extra credit, and READ the text book. He is very considerate about any questions that you have, so make sure to ask!
Great teacher with great insight. I feel like the class puts to much reliance on outside-of-class reading. The textbook is nice but as of this semester it is difficult to find and understand which chpater we are in. I also think it would be nice to have exam study guides. I found a lot of useful study guids/reviews but none were about the exam.
Probably the best econ teacher I've taken, would recommend. I don't get economics, but Brother Moncayo shows how the topics in the textbook actually apply to our lives. He also shows us how to access materials that will help us, from this class and onward. This is a part of an assignment, but he wants honest replies, not glaze, to learn from.
Professor Moncayo has been one of my favorite professors! One of the most helpful things he does is In Class group projects where you apply the concepts talked about in the reading and in class. Moncayo's in class activities and interactive lectures were very helpful in expanding my understanding, so show up to class and be an active participant!
Moncayo is a well educated economist that is a great perspective to have in anyones life. While teaching essential knowledge for the class, he helps you to get a well rounded point of view and education about our current economy. He is great for anyone who wants to grow personally, politically, and mentally.
By attending class and paying close attention, you will learn volumes from Professor Moncayo. Be curious and ask questions. He is willing to help you, so take advantage of that. If I were to change one thing about the course, it may be the length of the explore assignments.
Brother Moncayo is a great professor. He makes sure that you internalize the purpose and application of the economics. I think this aspect helped my learning and success the most in the course. If I were to change anything, I would make sure that the questions and rubrics for the assignments line up. As it is, they are sometimes confusing.
This professor does a very good job of conveying the information in easy-to-understand lessons. He does move quickly, so be sure to pay attention to everything he says. I really enjoy his way of applying what we are learning in the textbook to real life.
The class has a well thought out structure, you will know what you are doing in class each day and it is easy to follow. That being said, the class is extremely homework heavy (average of 7 assignments per week all taking well over an hour). Be ready to ask questions and have your perspective changed over the course of the semester.
I really enjoyed this class. The instructor is very candid about current events, though he often shares his opinions. Understanding the weekly quizzes has helped me a lot. I like most aspects of the class but wish he would review more textbook content to enhance understanding.
Professor Moncayo is very intelligent and has a great sense of humor. He openly has very high expectations for his students. He desires them to become better critical thinkers and know how to apply the economic concepts . While this is a good thing, sometimes it feels like he could do more to help the students reach those expectations.
He will make you work hard but he will prepare you for life
He has great in class activities. He is very good at applying the concepts you learn in class to the real world. One thing that helped me in this course the most was working together with your group. I would highly recommend taking ECON 151 from Bro. Moncayo.
Professor Moncayo is great! He has a fun dark sense of humor (If you are sensitive you may not like him but I did) but he is also genuinely nice when you are talking to him one on one. Make sure to do your best and do the extra credit (he gives out a lot). The class is hard but definitely passable and if you work hard you can get an A!
Brother Moncayo is the best I love how he connects with each student and helps them learn and grow.
I love Brother Moncayo's teaching style and the way he runs his class. It can be difficult at times but it is so you really pick up the information. If you spend time studying and doing what is asked of you, you will do well. Using the TA's/tutors helped me succeed.
I think that he does a great job of getting the point across, although he does expect you to have a solid background in math already. Also, I would say that a big part of class is staying up with current events. If you don't really care what is going on, you're going to hate this class.
This is a tough course and will be hard to pass if you don't keep up. He gives good feedback and is always willing to help, but he purposefully makes it hard. That being said, he does give extra credit and allows you to pass.
Really Really Great Professor! He teaches really really well and is hilarious, the only downside I would say to this course is I feel like there is a unnecessary amount of homework.
Brother Moncayo does a great job at making lectures engaging and fun, but they are fast-paced. He does an excellent job at setting his students up for success. He gives many tools and materials that help make assignments easier to understand.
Brother Moncayo is a very smart and knowledgeable man and there are many things you can learn from him but they are just hard to learn and sometimes what he talks about in class. He is very funny and his classes are entertaining but learning the material is very much on you. You don't learn a lot about the material in class.
I took ECON 201 and 151 with Bro Moncayo, and they were both amazing classes! He expects a little more than other professors would, but he really cares, and all of the work is expertly curated to your benefit as a student. Lectures are engaging and are always related to current events, which helps me understand and apply the material.
Brother Moncayo is a solid professor. He cares much more about what you get out of class than teaching the curriculum exactly which I appreciated. He loves to share his views, but always has a good reason for it. The worst part of the class is CENGAGE, the online textbook. It's hardly helpful and gives contradicting answers/reasons all the time.
Currently taking ECON 151 with bro Moncayo. He's such a good teacher, he cares for his students and wants to make sure everyone is learning. Make sure to turn in all your assignments on time, study and assist to weekly tutoring sessions with the TAs and you'll be fine.
Great professor that isn't afraid to speak his mind about topics or use real world issues as examples in class. Very concerned about student success and has a great sense of humor. I just wish there were a couple more hands on projects/lessons than lectures.
Professor gives long lectures but they are effective. He is very blunt with us and tells things as they are. This was great for an Econ class. He is a fair grader.
Passion for Macroeconomics, amazing lectures, and current real-world applications. SO funny in class, and great activities. To get an A on exams, just do the HW and try to understand it fully. If you fail, it's your fault. Possible to 100% HW. This class takes work but is sooooo fun.
I walked into Econ 151 expecting supply-and-demand curves and a semester of math-induced migraines. Instead, Professor Moncayo turned macroeconomics into the most engaging, relevant, and dare I say.. fun class I've taken at BYUI. From day one, he promised we'd “never just memorize; we'd understand why the economy moves,” and he delivered in spades.
Brother Daniel Moncayo is one of the best professors on campus. Something to be aware of is that the reading matters and you cannot pass without it. One thing that would be nice in this class is an explanation of course structure in the first week. He explains things as you go, so don't get discouraged in the first week, just keep working.
Mancayo is a decent professor, he gives you the tools you need to complete the class along with extra credit, be prepared to read and do most of the learning outside of class. The content he teaches each week in class barely relates to the content on assignments and tests but other than that he's a OK professor. Note: Dark humor
Very very fun class that I am excited to go to every week. There is so many resources at your disposal to be able to succeed in this class. His extra credit is very creative and well thought out, take advantage of it and earn as much as you can.
Brother Moncayo is a good professor that really wants to prepare you for the workforce no matter what major you are in. He has been great at giving advice for the future and always answers questions. The content taught in class does not always directly relate to assignments so make sure you read the book.
Brother Moncayo is very fun. He goes through topics quickly and doesn't focus on teaching everything you need for the exams, so you really have to do the readings to do well. His exams aren't weighted super heavily, and he gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and ways to make up points which I really appreciate.
With his class you get out as much as you put in. Make sure you participate in the discussions and ask questions! He's really great one-on-one and he wants you to succeed. One thing I wish he did though was cover things in class that we have on exams and not just things in the textbook.
He is a super good teacher. He expects a lot of his students which some people don't like because they don't want to work hard. If you push yourself and show him you care, he will help you get where you want to be.
Good teacher
I like His class. The one thing that I will say is that some of the assignments feel unnecessary and time-consuming. I learned the most from the homework assignments. He had us listen to several podcasts a week, which were interesting but didn't really teach me all that much about macroeconomics. The homework is more helpful.
Awesome teacher that works through problems in class with us to help us understand the concepts better. We are also allowed to work as groups on the homework and quizzes. Tests are important but not heavily graded like most classes. He does have explore assignments which I feel are mostly busy work & too much info to actually learn from and retain.
Professor Moncayo is very knowledgeable and explains complex economic concepts clearly. His lectures are engaging and include real-world examples that make the material easier to understand. The feedback on assignments is detailed and helpful, allowing me to improve throughout the course.
He is the goat, but he uses his class to teach students more about how to "succeed in the business world," rather than preparing students for tests or quizzes. He is very entertaining, but just know that if you want a good grade in his class, you'll most likely have to earn it on your own rather than relying on him to teach the material.
Professor Moncayo is a great teacher who genuinely cares about his students, not just about the grades, but about wether we actually understand the material. He teaches in a way that makes you see why economics should play a role in everyone's life. He assigns a lot of homework, but it actually helps for tests. If you do the work you'll be prepared
I really loved the class and Moncayo's teaching style. There is a good amount of required reading. The in class discussions have been really helpful. Be prepared to put in a good amount of time on the reading assignments if you want a good grade.
Bro Moncayo is an awesome professor! He structured the course well. About the course, Pros and Cons: Pro - he ensures that classmates work together both in and outside of class Pro - his TA's tutor and are great at it Con - his explore assignments are sometimes heavy and feel somewhat unproductive. it would be nice if they were lighter.
Brother Moncayo is a really good teacher and is great at making the class actually interesting. There are some assignments that are a little questionable on how productive they really are. Make sure to read the rubric because sometimes there are little things on them that will kill your grade. His dark humor is awesome too.
Brother Moncayo is hands down one of the most experienced and intelligent profesors in campus, his knowledge and experience is highly appreciated and well received. If you want to succeed in his class you have to be on top of the reading and study outside of class, most of his lectures is just analyzing and not reviewing terms, so DO THE READINGS!
Bro Moncayo is very good at explaining tough ideas, especially with the amount of complex knowledge he has. He is more than willing to answer any type of question and has economic-based standpoints on politics and pretty much everything which is nice. The exams are a little tough but there many opportunities to get tutoring and extra credit.
He's an amazing professor. I took him a few years back for Econ 150, and enjoyed him so much that I knew that I wanted to take him again for this class. The class can be difficult (especially if you don't read the textbook) but he gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. He makes this topic entertaining and relevant to our lives as students.
Brother Moncayo is top tier. His class can be hard if you don't put in any effort or read the textbook, but if you do then his class shouldn't be too difficult. He really makes the lessons as interactive as he possibly could and does all he can to help you understand/apply economics in the real world. You could never be bored in his class.
Awesome professor! I loved learning in his class and hearing insights from someone who truly loves economics and understands politics. 5/5 in every way. The only downside was the extra career assignments—they added too much work. Still, I highly recommend taking his class!
He is a great professor! He holds Q&A sessions where he gives great answers to questions, and he keeps things light with humor. He encourages working together with classmates to learn and improve together, which works pretty well in my experience. The only thing that could be improved with the class is less writing about podcasts.
dude is hilarious keeps class fun, but also expects allot from you. don't think you can slack off and get an A.
Brother Moncayo doesn't give out anything for free. He's economist. NO FREE LUNCH. He makes you earn everything in his class, but I will say that he has a purpose to everything that he does. He wants you to succeed in the workforce, not in his classroom. Taking one of his classes probably won't be the easiest path, but it will be well worth it.
He is probably the smartest person at the school, but he will push you more than most teachers, His class gets a bad wrap for being hard, but truthfully, if you do the homework and show up, it's hard not to pass the class.
Prof Moncayo teaches in a very hands on method and grades similar to Mario Kart, people who fall behind get great opportunities to improve and catch up. He has rubrics for everything, an interesting extra credit system that I would like to see more of in other classes. He rules his class with an extremely fair but iron fist. Learning for real world
I found success by also using other sources such as videos to clear up some topics. be on top of your assignments, pay attention to the rulebricks of each assignment. He's great at discussing the current economy and then relating it to the class. I recommend in the future to do less in depth equations flexes on the board and start off simple.
He doesn't teach any of the material and expects us to learn everything on our own so when the exams come around, you are very unprepared. The only reason I passed was because the exams were weighted so lightly that I did good on all of the assignments, failed every exam, and still passed somehow.
Brother Moncayo is one of the better teachers I have had at this university. He is very knowledgeable in what he teaches and his whole goal is to spread that to you so you can understand the world of economics as he does. He has a very good balance of humor and seriousness. All of his writing assignments are all or nothing so check rubrics often.
He spends most of the class talking about random stuff and trying to be funny. He lets any student ask any life question at all and he magically has the answer to every question anyone could ask about life... He knows it all I guess. He doesn't give us practice or teach plainly. He also thinks its funny to Curse which isn't appropriate at BYU-I
Reading is a crucial component of this class. If you don't read, then you will be lost during the lecture, which gets confusing fast. Test prep and chapter overviews with helpful hints are the best things to use to succeed in this class. One thing that could be changed for this class is finding a way to help those who are lost in the content.
Funny, caring, passionate, but not for everyone. Class average on midterm 1 was a 68% and for Midterm 2 was an F. Most work is just busy work that you don't see on tests. The stuff that is on tests is covered in one HW assignment so you hardly practice it. Others and I both saw things on the big tests that we didn't recognize and never learned.
Amazing professor, taught amazingly well. He has experience with economics and statistics infront of various governments and other wild senerios. Excellent course, any econ or statistics major needs to take this class
