He is pretty easy but really boring. He also gives you tuns of stuff to study on the study guide so there is alot to remember.
Very passionate about his subject. Gives fair tests, but there are only three of them.
He is not a bad teacher. There are not many grades so you have to do well on the tests to get a good grade. The tests are mostly based on his so you will want to take good notes.
Great teacher. Keeps the material interesting. I'd definitely take him again. His class is not easy, but as long as you take notes and study it's not too difficult to pull an A. Automatic 5% increase on your final grade as long as you only miss one class. I'd definitely recommend him.
not a bad teacher but i wouldn't take him again- he isn't very clear on what he wants for the tests and that is all you are graded on so...you really need to do good on them.anyway like i said not a bad teacher but not one i recommend. : )
Not a bad guy, just isn't a good teacher. Very unclear with lecture. Give too much info on study guide like 9 essay questions to study, give 2 on the tests and you pick one, but have to know all in detail and give alot of dates to make a good grade. I will not be taking him for 2020. If you have a dispute over a question, he is always right.
Good teacher, but pretty hard. You have to take good notes or you won't do well. Study guide is helpful if you actually do it and study it. Wants things very specific. Realitivly hard but over all a good teacher.
The guy definitely knows his stuff. His notes are fairly well organized and pretty easy to understand, although sometimes he writes down random stuff in his notes which can throw you off track!!! If you study really hard you might get a C on all of his exams! yup his exams are harsh!!....good luck if you take him!
Good, knowledgable professor. However, you must pay attention in class and study. The book is really not needed.
His notes are fairly good, but you must be at every single class or you miss alot. Test book is not needed, but is helpful in filling out the pretty long study guides. His exams are quite tough, mainly the writing portions which he grades very strictly on!!
He's a good guy, but his class wasn't that great. All he does is lecture and writes down single words and dates. You have to decipher his lectures into detailed notes, because he expects a lot of detail on the exams, even though he doesn't warn you of this. Don't even buy the book unless you have extra money to waste.
This is the most boring class ive ever taken.
Knows a lot about History, but can't organize it into anything understandable. Tests are difficult (gives study guides out only a week before test with nearly 200 or more terms to know, not including esaay questions).
His lecture notes are horrible. The study guides have over 100 terms on them and essay questions. He grades the essays like you had weeks to complete the assignment. Harsh grading. He gets extremely pissed if you leave class when it is supposed to be over. Overall I despise this man.
His class is surprisingly easy, just pay attention, and you'll do fine.
I thought he was a very good teacher, though all he does is lecture and write a few words on the board. You just have to write down almost everything he says, but it's not hard to follow. His test are pretty easy if you do the study guide which is fairly long but it really helps on the test!
Lectures can be boring. He's a good teacher and knows what he is teaching. There's an essay portion of the exam which can be difficult if you don't study. Study the material and pay attention in class and you'll do just fine.
Good teacher and if you see him after class he will help you alot!
Good teacher. You have 2 be able 2 take good notes because he doesn't provide any. If you go to class and listen, take notes, & use them to find the terms on his study guide you should do well. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO PUT ON THE ESSAY QUESTIONS!

I thought Dr. Newcomer was a really good teacher. He stays on topic really well and is really good at explaining things. His tests are not easy, but as long as you go to class and take good notes you should end up with a good grade. I'm not even very interested in history but his class was my favorite of the semester. I felt I learned a lot.
I absolutley hated this teacher. He writes one word notes and does not give you time to write anything down. Does not give study guide till a couple days before and its alot of material that you have to learn. Said that we did not need our book, but if you dont buy it you wont pass the tests.
horrible at giving notes. you are given only four grades throughout the semester and no extra credit offered. seems very snobby
Class was very hard but if you kept up with notes and read along with the book it made things much easier. I however did not realize this until after the first exam because he tells you on the first day that you don't need your book. & also take notes of your own, his suck.
Boring, talks weird, and hard to stay interested in his lectures. He skips around a lot and is hard to follow. Bad at giving notes. Exams are not extremely difficult if you use the study guide. Gave 3 essay questions per exam.
Probably not the worst History Professor, but very close to it. His notes are so awful, one word notes. There is no point in taking notes because when you read them later they make no sense. Study guide is helpful but he took away the study sessions with student teacher because the "average" grade on that test was "too high" Take someone else!!
I think Dr. Newcomer is a good teacher. Yes his notes are one worded but if you listen to what else he is saying &take your own notes then you will be fine He is very helpful if you have any question you have one paper due & 3 tests the test are passable with 3 essay questions to chose from But I thought that he was a great teacher.
One word:ignoramus. The worst professor I've ever had.
I agree with some of the other comments. He's sort of the bottom of the barrel in terms of history teachers at ETSU. I would never take him again, or recommend taking him to anyone.
Dr. Newcomer is a intelligent man who clearly knows his subject; however, his lectures tend to become confusing. He jumps around alot, from one topic to another which makes it difficult to take notes. Not the best prof, but not worst take him.
Dr. Newcomer gets a bad rap for being difficult. Really he's a nice person who is very concentrated on his profession. I found him engaging and willing to help students. I highly recommend him.
Not a bad guy, but not a real good teacher. Notes are confusing, and erases them before you can write them down. Expects a lot-dates, specific names, events, etc for many different groups of people. Not impossible, but it was hard for me. If you need to take his class, just be prepared to read. IF you can avoid him, I'd say do that... LA Conquest
It is hard to take notes during his lectures and when tests role around I am really confused. He has 40 multiple choice questions and an essay on the tests. But I will say he is very helpful if you email him questions about the study guide. I would avoid this class if at all possible.
This class was not very fun. All Newcomer does is ramble on and on which makes note taking extremely difficult. He is helpful through email. His tests are pretty hard but its the essay question that will get you every time. Avoid if you dont like monotone ramblers!
This class isn't too bad if you take notes that are more than what he writes down. He uses big words when he talks and only writes down one or two words. It's very difficult to take notes from his lectures. The lectures were boring but a few hours of studying on each test will get you an A or B
Just ok. It is really hard to take notes. He is a bit unfair on his tests. He's a history snob and I love history. He thinks really highly of himself and thinks anyone who isn't into latin america shouldn't be a history major. His lectures just don't flow or give you a good idea of the time.
i really hate history
Dr. Newcomer is a great professor. Sometimes he maybe a little unclear but if you have any questions he tells you the first day to email him and ask. He may ramble a bit but he is clearly passionate about history. He gives you a study guide, for goodness sake how hard is that?
i really hated this class... attendance is mandatory which sucks for such a boring teacher.. his notes suck and they are impossible to understand when you go back to study... i thought the essay part of the tests were much easier than the multiple choice
Newcomer is a nice guy in general and does want u to do well, but his teaching methods aren't so helpful. He knows the material very well and the lecture seems as though he is having a conversation with himself. Do not take him if history is not a strong subject for you. He barely writes down his notes. Study years in advance in order to pass.
Dr Newcomer is a great instructor. Whatever he says during lecture... WRITE IT DOWN, not just what HE write down. One has to know how to take notes, for goodness sakes it's COLLEGE. I took about 5 pages of notes a day and did great on tests. If you don't take notes you probably will not pass. All in all Newcomer is a great professor.
The tests will kick your butt even if you study the notes. Take someone else if possible.
ugh the most boring class in the entire world. he knows his stuff so be sure to take notes and you will do fine ....that is if you can stay awake to take them
Is a bit of an A-hole. That being said, he gives you a study guide with the test questions on them. Didnt know a thing about Mexican history b4 now pretty skilled. Tough teacher but you do learn alot and isnt that why we are in college. Sounds like Kermit the frog a bit
He's smart and interesting, but he's extremely arrogant. He singles out students and ridicules them in front of their peers. Also, his attendance policies are draconian. I was 8 minutes late for an exam and was dropped a letter grade. He's very controlling, doesn't welcome input from students, doesn't give any real choice in paper topics. Stay away
Awesome dude, sounds just like kermit the frog, and honestly as long as you attend class and pay mediocre attention you can easily pass the class. There is a paper due about a month before the final, but as long as you pick a subject you kind of care about you should be in the clear. Take him, it was actually pretty gnarly.
He's moody and threatening. However, meet with him in his office and he will clear up any questions and help you as much as possible. Take initiative and he's pretty cool, but still a tough teacher. Read read read read read, talk to him during office hours and you'll do fine.
Dr. Newcomer is okay. He is very intelligent and he expects a lot from his students. Slack off in this class and your days are numbered! He is always available for help. Though all business and very demanding, stick with him and you'll learn the historian's craft. Make no mistake, he can be intimidating, but then again, so is Historical Methods.
The angry child of Tom Greene and Kermit, 3 tests 40 m.choice & 60 points on an essay. he provides study guides with possible essay q's on it Take a lot of notes, & dont just copy what he writes. atnd can fail u. good but strict-not afraid to fail u. 1 mjr essay that can break your grade & wont accept late work. hard class but you will learn lots.
Hes very smart cracks a joke or two LOL i remember when time a guy passed out in class he didnt know what to do if it wasnt for nurses in the rm idk what would have happened we got out early though but 4 real u need to take alot of notes in his class so pay close attention in class he doesnt do d2l so go to class um never opened my book
A good professor but he can be a little difficult on the tests. A great lecturer and also cracks a few jokes on occasion. Not an easy grade but not impossible either.
Boring class but sneaks in a few jokes to make it interesting. He's very smart but over teachers for gen ed class. You will have notes for days and exams are 40q's and essay question in 55min class. If u pay attention you can make a good grade but I would take a more simple prof. for gen ed history.
Dr.Newcomer is not an easy "A" professor. you WILL learn from him. if you do not go to class you WILL be lost. grades the essay part of exams fairly tough. if you want to LEARN history , this is the professor for you. if you just want to get a grade for the requirement, then take another professor.
Very knowledgeable, but way too harsh for a gen ed. Took notes every day and still lost my 4.0 because of his class. Great guy, but three tests and an essay are the only grades you get- essays are graded very harshly.
Dr. Newcomer is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable in his subject and has a very balanced view of it. He makes you learn and expects you to understand what he is teaching. I enjoyed being in his class, even though it wasn't my first choice, I am glad now that I took the class.
I learned a lot more than I expected and enjoyed the class very much.
He is very mundane and very monotone but he still enjoys what he teaches. The only assignments are the tests and you dont need a book, but be prepared to study a lot. His essay questions on tests are fairly easy.
Newcomer is a nice guy and fair when it comes to grading, but his class isn't easy. I'm a poly-sci major, so I do like history. Nonetheless, I had to fight my butt off for a B. If you're looking for an easy American History credit, look elsewhere.
Dr. Newcomer is an incredibly challenging professor, but I learned more history in his class than in any other history class in my life. Tests were combination multiple-choice and short essay. There is a paper due at the end of the semester worth a large portion of your grade. Attendance is a must - tests are primarily based on his notes!
Dr. Newcomer is a good teacher, and a really nice guy. His tests are reallllyyy hard but he gives study guides a week prior, and holds study sessions with his grad assistant.
This teacher is very clear on what he wants you to know. You have to attend class if you want to do good in this class. He send you a study guide for the test for his essay portion of the test. He gives you five possible essay questions and only chooses two on the exam. The essay is graded very strictly. NOT AN EASY A OR B.
he is a very freaking hard teacher and you have to attend or you fail cause you get lost but he is a strict prof. on attendance.
VERRRRRY hard teacher! The exam essays are ridiculous! You must write 5 paragraphs on a certain topic or you loose 40 points from the exam. His sideshows are so unclear. I have to retake history because of this professor. AVOID if possible!
Extremely tough class. Learned a lot. Not used to making B's in History classes. He is a bit unclear in lectures on occasion and can get very rude with students at times, but he is still a very competent teacher.
Dr. Newcomer is the easiest History professor I have had at ETSU. His lectures are interesting, he tells jokes from time to time, and the atmosphere in class is pretty laid back. He knows his history, and you will learn a lot from him.
Mr Newcomer knows his stuff. He goes in depth about the history and makes it very interesting. You will have to pay attention in his lectures to pass, though. He has four grades all semester, and all four are exams. It's a great class overall because you learn a great amount of history.
Dr. Newcomer's test are really tough if you don't pay attention to lecture. He says the book is not required but trust me you'll need it. His notes are very unclear powerpoints that will not help you when it's time to study.
Newcomer likes this devil website called Tophat that he only uses for attendance. Get the semester version because no one else on campus uses it. 4 tests for the semester. It's about 50 or 60 years per test. There was no required homework ever! He picks a book in the beginning of the semester and you read 3 chapters for every test (extra credit).
Dr. Newcomer is one of the best professors in the History department. He is knowledgeable, thorough, and he explains complicated topics in a way that makes them understandable. If you truly want to learn about history, and are not simply in search of an easy A, he is a tremendous teacher. I've taken two of his classes, and recommend him highly.
Dr. Newcomer is a great professor. He gives study guides and they really help with the tests. He also gives out extra credit on the tests for going to class and signing in. If you write down what he puts on the slides it's not always enough, so take your own notes too, but if you do that you'll do great. And he's not a boring lecturer.
Very unclear on the tests. nothing like the study guide.
Took his class for part of the history major and trust me never, ever take any of his classes. He's arrogant about his subject, if for any reason you should miss his class, kiss any hope of a decent grade goodbye. His study guides are useless and when he grades if you don't include every specific term, date that he wanted in your paper he'l flunk u
Avoid this man at all costs, tried as hard as possible all semester and struggled to pass, he's arrogant and condescending with no sympathy for any issues you might have... I was graduating this year but I need to wait now because I got a d in his class. Worst professor at etsu!!!
Avoid at all costs
He lectures the whole class, he's nice and will help you if you need it. His test can be hard because you have to know terms because he doesn't give a word bank for identification questions. There is extra credit at the end it's a 5-page paper that replaces a test grade. He also uses TopHat and will give credit for attendance.
His tests are NOTHING like his lecture slides. Hardest history class I've ever taken. If you miss a class, you miss about 25 slides. Stay away
Newcomer gets a bad rap for reasons I have no idea why. You have 4 total tests including the final so make sure you study. Pay attention each class and go to class because you need to be in class to get the code for Tophat so you can get credit for being there. Don't wait til the day before to study.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Newcomer's class was one of the hardest I've ever taken. His powerpoint slides barely give any detail, and you have to read the chapters of the textbook that he requires, otherwise you'll be left in the dust and will fail the tests. The only grades in the class are exams and attendance, and it makes your grade suffer.
Really boring lectures. Only graded by a few exams but makes you buy tophat which in an app he uses to take attendance.. its about $20 and you have to buy another book. its a novel you have to read at the end of the semester. Not bad only $12 on Amazon
This class was okay. You have to come to class because he takes attendance. His grades are mainly based on tests but also has plenty of extra credit. As long as you complete the study guides you should be good to go!
Dr Newcomer might be a nice guy, but his tests are not very easy whatsoever. His study guides are far from useful as they are a list of terms (sometimes being 150 terms) that do not explain anything at all about said terms. Hes a very tough grader and since Latin America is his specialty he is extra nit-picky. Beware of his classes.
I took him online, and I hated every minute of it. He makes you work on this 8-10 page project with a 20-25 source bibliography. He does not post content in D2l except the links for his "lectures," and if you don't watch all of them, you won't know if he assigned anything unless you sit through the whole thing. You also have very few grades so rip.
Dr. Newcomer is tough, but fair. He won't sugarcoat what he thinks of your work, so be ready for that. Thick skin is important, but he does offer really good advice. He assigns fascinating books and leads good conversations in class. Just stay on top of the readings and the assignments and you'll do fine. And you'll probably learn a lot.
I took Dr. Newcomers US since 1877 and it was the easiest class. He used Learning Curve and it is so easy to skim through the textbook looking for answers. I would use the Find tool to locate key words in the certain part of the textbook it gives you. The answers for the quizzes are on quizlet except a couple lecture questions. I floated through!
Dr. Newcomer is a pretty standard history prof. A few tests throughout the course (take home, open book) and then a final paper. I've found this is the standard for most 3 and 4 thousand level history courses at ETSU. Not a super tough grader, but not a 100% easy grade, either. Overall, good guy who is passionate about Latin American history.
