I took the class this fall (2009). Daniel makes the somewhat dreadful topic of public speaking extremely approachable and enjoyable. He integrates the coursework with his students extremely well, making it relevant with examples for domestic and international students. One of the best professors I've had. You'll enjoy it and learn great kills.

Mr. Norton by far one of the best professors I have had at SCCC. He does use a text but emphasizes on each student learning through experience. He always had interesting stories which related to the topic, made students feel at ease when speaking in front of the class, gave amazing constructive criticism & was overall just an amazing educator.

I totally agree with everyone else--indeed, Daniel is, without a doubt, the best teacher at Central--but I do have one thing against him: He's very liberal. Albeit, I'm liberal too, but his politics will occasionally influence and hinder his curriculum. For example, he gave a 20 minute off-topic lecture blaming homelessness on Reagan.

The most interesting and practical class I have ever had. I was scared of giving a speech before the class. Since I've learned useful communication skills, I gained confidence when I stand in front of the class.I'm grateful for our teacher--Norton.

He was nice and clarified! The RAT (quizzes) were a little long. I just realized everytime I looked at him (engaging in his lecture), he just looked back and pointed at me and took me as an example! lol. It was really fun to come to class. One more thing, sign up before the class is full, otherwise it'll be hard to get in.

I took his communication in small groups. Some things he said would sound funny at the beginning, but gradually, you will know what he really wanted to tell. However, there are some parts of the lectures and expectations weren't clear sometimes, not a problem though. I expected more from this class, but more or so felt that it's an "easy 4.0 class"

Learned a lot not just from the material, but also about other cultures. Classes are both educational and humorous. He gives good grades as long as you put in your effort. I'm planning to take his CMST220 class some time later.

The best teacher I've ever taken at Seattle Central. It was worth waking up 7:30 every morning to attend his 9:00 class. You will enjoy this class. Wonderful teacher, and he's funny. The midterm and final are quite difficult if you don't read the book or pay attention in class, but overall the best class I've taken.

I signed up for this class because this website said Norton was hot but he really wasn't. Unless you're into older guys. However, this class ended up being amazing and is the funniest class I've taken at Central. The Midterm was crazy hard but the final was pretty easy; both were take-home. I defiantly recommend this class to everyone.

There are quizzes which he calls RAT they pop at no time so read or skim the book. There were only 2 speeches. These international students did better than me tho. Mid-term & final exam were simple

I took that class to practice more speech presenting but it was not enough for me. he likes giving a test on the chapters he mentions to his students to read, but take it with the hard class, it is fun to take :

He is just a amazingly knowlegeable and interesting teacher. You will never feel boring in this class. And he's grading is not hard at all as long as you put your effort into your every speech. Choose him!

Funny teacher, really helpful. Knows how to incorporate stereo-types of different cultures with humor without disrespecting anyone. Encourages students to speak up and come out of their shell. Absolutely recommend him!

A good instructor who enables students to become best speakers. At first didnt know what to do in my introduction and conclusion section of my speech. As time went by,with help i learnt what to include.

If you want an easy A take his class. He likes to listen to himself talk though, and often times makes the class very awkward. Nice guy, but kinda odd. If like feeling engaged and are looking for a class that will help you learn something, maybe not for you. Again easy A, but not very interesting or engaging.

Norton is a great teacher due to his teaching style, and it is very easy to get a good grade if you are fully participate with him and the class. You can learn the most thing about speech from his lecture, which is an enjoyable thing to do.

Best teacher I ever had in SCC Lectures are super interesting, and the professor is very entertaining, also too very fun! I enjoyed every class. Although, this class should be daily, and not twice a week, because the lectures are very long, and very tiring, but the professor made it kind of easy on us. TAKE THIS CLASS, WONT REGRET IT! LEARNED ALOT

It's really nice to see a professor who actually cares about his students, not only some, but all of his students. i did see a lot of progress in me and also my friends (who at first were so scared of speaking in public). he used to say, life is unfair and that one day we're all going to die. but take his class, it'll make your life worth while.

Daniel is the man on campus. Stoked on his class. Learned lots on how to pick up chicks. He wasn't an jerk, that's always cool. Pretty darn funny. Confident and relaxed person, makes showing up to class not suck.

Cmst 210 was a great start with norton. I went from being awkward, to an organized thinker of how to express myself. I feel like his lectures will still be stuck in my head 20 years from. I'm definitely gonna take another class from him. Btw, he's got the hots for an 100+ year old fellow.

Show up and do the work ! He is very easy , he based your presentations on growth of you so, don't worry if someone better then you. If you do bad on test ( like I do...) just make sure you do great on presentations. Home work was not terrible either. We had two essays and outline for each presentation. Overall, it's a fun class.

Don't ask for extra credits, coz there is no such thing on earth lol Wonderful instructor, you can tell he enjoys class time and you definitely will do too! I enjoyed the class a lot and got a lot out of the class. He instilled a lot of ideas and knowledge in you even though you didn't realize it.

I really enjoyed this class that will support me to make speech in medical field. Concentrate the technique in the professor's lecture. He also performed some spotaneous speech suddently. It was fantastic if people could reconigze. You have never felt stress at all. Thank you so much.

Great professor. He wants you to succeed! I was not great at standing up and talking to people before his class, my voice would shake but I got more comfortable and am still nervous but it is not as bad.

this class is designed to help students to be more confident of communicating with other people. The group evaluation and the textbook are helpful to understand the basic requirements for every speech. Choose some easy and fun topics instead of the complicated ones and you can still get good grades.

Mr. Norton was honestly the best teacher I have ever had. I learned much in this course that I will use in the business world. His teaching style is one of inclusiveness, giving clear messages on material, and levity that makes the class extremely interesting with many periods of laughter. He makes you want to do your best. Professor Norton is one of my favorite professor in Seattle Central. I am engineering student with lots of pressure but take his class at the same time feel relaxed. There are 4 exams and a group project during the last two weeks. Do the exams, turn in everything and do a five minutes presentation, then you will be fine.

I just finished his communication 101 class in spring, and I am going to take his public speaking class in fall quarter. Trust me, this professor is interesting and knowledgeable. The class is fun and easy. You will like it.

Very knowledgeable with public speaking. Gives lots of instruction and feedback. You will not be able to avoid participating class discussion because he tries to call on everyone, but since it's a communications class, that should be expected, and he uses humor to guide students' behavior and responses.

His class is not only easy but actually helpful. He is caring and amazing teacher. One of the best classes I took at SCC.
