Very disorganized. Don't take him. His class is a joke
No Comments
Nice person. He's new to teaching, so its quite disorganized. I think he has potential to be a good teacher but it will take time. His class was very easy this summer but he might do a 360 and make the class really tough next quarter! Good Luck.
Dan Nurco is an exceptionally personable and excellent professor. He seems to genuinely care that his students learn the material. He's not out to get anyone or play games with his tests. His graded assignments are excellent preparation for the tests.
Disorganized, late on day of tests, unprepared lectures, all over the book, unsure about his own answers when asked questions. I expected more from a PhD.
He's a really nice guy, multiple choice tests, chance for extra credit, not very organized, late for class, tests are easy if you do the assignments.
you'll pass the class with flying colors if you just do all the assignments. i enjoyed his class this summer.
AWSOME teacher Incredibly helpful if you go to office hours. Great tests Fun guy, Makes things really interesting and really tries to get to know his students on a personal basis.
He is the best prof I've ever had!!!! He's very interested in helping every student. If you're ok with doing a little homework then you'll go really far in his class.
Incredibly unorganized, was never on time to anything (exams included), deviated from the syllabus with no warning, and gave assignments that had nothing to do with the relevant coursework. Overall- a poor example of a university professor and very unprofessional.
He is a very nice person. At first, he was clear and consice. He tries too hard. I think by the end of the quarter he was just exhausted. He stayed in his office the whole night writing exams, he knows almost everybody's name,(160ppls).. it was just a little strange to have a professor like him
Not very good at explaning the material, but he DOES try his best to help you. Hold many review sessions. A very nice professor to know.
He is an awesome professor and incredibly helpful if you attend class and go to review sessions. I always attended reviews, and he would give out hints to those who stayed later and engaged him with questions. Really cool person too.
Dr. Nurco is an amazing professor. He went out of his way to help students by having daily office hours, and was very genuinely interested in helping students learn. Attendance is important, but his exams were very fair and straight-forward.
nice guy, wants to know EVERYONE'S name (200+ people). tries really hard to help, but sometimes too hard. (i.e. "so this here is a double bond.. it's an alkene...")i rather him going over exam materials than spending time explaining what's on the slide already. GO TO THE DAY BEFORE THE MIDTERM, he shares old the old midterm, 50+% which will show up
Okay professor.I found his use of PPT slides ineffective for teaching OChem-he reiterated what was on the slides rather than explaining the material.Homework didn't always follow what was expected of us on exams-online quizzes were useful.Go to class (he gives exam ? hints), take good notes, and study REALLY hard for exams.Final was tough!
He seems like a very nice guy but he's never online to class always 10 minutes late. He can't explain the material very well because he was basically reading off his slides which were almost identical to the textbook. I'm sure he's a cool person but he just can't teach.
Not a good teacher. His slides are images from the textbook. He is never prepared for lecture. He goes off on tangents all the time. No practice exams, only HW assignments on material he did not even teach. He refuses to answer student's questions before class. When asked a simple question he will ramble then say.."ask during office hours" *AVOID*
do not take this professor if you have the option; did not help taking this course with Nurco during a summer session when the pace is so fast; he is useless during lecture, rude during office hours, and very unhelpful overall towards students. he may seem to try every once in a while, but teaching is just not in him.
take this class if you like learning ochem by yourself. he flips through slides on powerpoint and runs over the pictures with a laser pointer and mumbles things about them. I'm pretty sure he wings his lectures with whatever appears on the powerpoint which really is just a collection of pictures from the book. i got an A-
Just reads off the powerpoints; don't go to class if you can put the time in to study by yourself.
By the time the first week of lecture ends, students typically pick up on the fact that he does not attempt teach ochem to students. I would recommend going to lecture only to know what he is covering for the test. The upside to nurco though is that his tests are fairly easy (maybe this is because he skips certain concepts and mechanisms).
To put it frankly - if you take this teacher for the 118 series you are doomed. Unless you have the amazing ability to self teach yourself Ochem via textbook alone, prepare to learn nothing. No practice exams, only practice is assigned hw problems from the textbook, which should be noted that he himself cannot do without his solutions manual. AVOID
This was Dr. Nurcos first time teaching 118B, students should understand that while reading these comments. His grading was very fair. The entire class is curved, and he tells us where he will be making the test from(power point/lecture). To those who are taking this class for pre-med, if you can't handle this then change your career goal.
He is a good teacher. Just go to class and to his office hours. He is very helpful and he really really really cares about his students. Although he's exams are hella long... just study and redo all practice homework problems again and again... that's the trick! He is an awesome professor!
I found Dr. Nurco to be pleasant & helpful. OChem is neither easy nor overly difficult, but it is challenging. Take it seriously: attend all lectures & discussions, take notes, do the homework, make flash cards, read the textbook, understand reaction mechanisms & you can do well...I sure did. Exams were challenging but graded on a fair curve.
Nurco is a very unique professor. He is easy to understand but his thought process is pretty jumpy so you have to really pay attention during lecture. He also loves NMR so this plays out to be large potions on all of the midterms, so make sure to study it
He depends too much on powerpoint slides and fails to properly teach the material. He is ruthless with grading and I put a lot of time studying for this class. He scolded one of the TAs for giving students too many points on exams even though this TA dedicated so much time to students! Nurco is very vague about what he expects and picks favorites.
Nurco is definitely not Nasiri, and he doesn't strive to be. His useless powerpoint strategy fails, but then again, don't expect to find ANY tricks, difficult problems/mechanisms, or minor details on his test. They are extremely easy and an A is very achievable. GO TO THE WORKSHOP offered by the LSC, they will teach you everything you need to know.
This guy does not know his organic chemistry at all. Relies on his powerpoints and problems from books. Seems lost and confused when confronted with problems and needs a book for help. If you plan to use chem in the future or other classes, AVOID.
you must approach organic chem with the right attitude. I took 118B twice, once with nurco. Nurco really lays everything on the table for his students. he lets you know what is fair game. my BEST advice is to GO SEE HIM. this ensures you are both on the same page. he truly cares about passing his students, just have to show the effort
Awful. His teaching style is really hard to follow. Didn't seem to have a real lesson plan. He thought there was 3 weeks of class left when there was only 1 more class until finals! If you are going to take him, be prepared to teach yourself the material because he is no help. AVOID.
Professor Nurco had lots of office hours and was more than willing to help you. However, his lecture style was extremely hard to follow. He used powerpoints from the publisher that often had mistakes. The powerpoints were not very helpful because they only had reactions on them, no words. If you missed something he said, tough luck. Read the book.
Nurco had a lot of office hours and tried to help, but he seemed to not know the answers to a lot of questions. His lectures had powerpoints from the textbook publisher, which meant all the charts and graphs and equations were exactly the same as the book. His tests and quizzes always had errors so make sure to look them over.
Wow! What a class. OCHEM is an interesting case. Not hard, but challenging. Not easy, but fun. Nurco played his part, but he is not a great professor. I would avoid him if you truly want to learn. But exams are straightforward, except for he final was crazy!! Know Your NMR.
Despite the negative reviews, I thought he was overall a really great professor. He's very willing to help his students, and tries to keep the class motivated. His lectures were very organized and despite him being late in posting practice exams (night before the exam), the book assignments he gave were as hard or harder than actual exam questions and prepared me well! I'm usually not stellar at the sciences ( gen chem , yikes!) but I ended up getting a god grade in this class. Curve is generous
Dr. Nurco really wants you to be interested in Chem, but his lectures aren't the most clear and his powerpoint slides are complicated. I ended up learning almost everything from the homework assignments which are necessary to pass the exams. If you see him in office hours he really gets to know you which can help you grade-wise in the long run.
The lectures are a bit confusing. He teaches material as if you know what he's talking about, throwing facts and processes at you. I learned things after class by studying his lecture slides for a very long time and by doing practice problems. Although he is eager to answer questions, I basically taught myself.
He's very enthusiastic about the subject, but I feel like he teaches 8A as if we all know everything about ochem. It can get really confusing and he'll go fast. Use the textbook to back up the things he presents in lecture and you'll be fine.
Dr. Nurco is a really nice guy. Very enthusiastic about chemistry and fanboyish about chemicals in a most adorable fashion. His willingness to answer questions is only marred by the speed with which he covers material, and the confusing nature of his lecture slides. Reading the bookwatching youtube videos to supplement is required
Dr. Nurco is great. He is very helpful outside of class. His tests are reasonable for the most part. Just learn the material and take the tests, it's that straightforward. It's ochem, so it's definitely in your best interest to read the textbook regardless of who your professor is. It's a somewhat time consuming class, but not too bad.
Dr Nurco is one of the BEST chem professors I've ever had. He is a down to earth guy, always willing to help, super nice and enthusiastic! Ochem is not easy but he makes everything really clear and it is easy to understand him. I loved him and would take him again.
Professor Nurco hold many extra problem solving sessions before midterms and finals which I really appreciated. Weekly quizzes were very basic and exams reasonable. He also taught clearly and used both slides and chalkboard. HW not required. The curve was generous.
Nurco relies on the powerpoints provided by the ochem book company. He reads them & adds with in-class examples. He is very broad/vague with the lectures so you HAVE to read the book to understand it all. He is more than willing to help if you need it & holds SEVERAL office hours which you should take advantage of! I did & I got an A- in the class
Took CHEM8A and CHEM8B. Knows his stuff, but sometimes its hard to understand his explanations. His lectures are okay, but in order to fully understand the material you'll need read the textbook. He is more than welcome to help you and he holds extra office hours before every quiz or exam. The practice quiz/exam are almost the same as the real one
Took Chem8A with him and it was terrible. Really terrible. He insists on posting practice quizzes the evening before each quiz, which pretty much leaves very little time for us to practice. He also reads off the book, so many people just come to class to take the quiz and then leave. He's super boring. Take someone better if you can.
His lectures are very boring and very surface-level compared to what we are tested on. You definitely need to read the textbook in order to understand what is going on. He posts a practice quiz with the answers the day before the quiz. The only helpful thing was that he holds multiple review sessions in the days before the quiz.
Dr. Nurco sucked! He doesn't care about the students and blames them for doing poorly on quizzes when it's his fault for not teaching the content! Lectures are very disorganized and quizzes didn't reflect the content well. Also no partial credit! Take ochem with literally ANYONE else
Absolutely terrible professor. While he holds review sessions outside of class, his lectures are extremely shallow in content so reading the book is a must. Additionally, he does everything last minute. He releases the practice quizzes and their keys at literally 2AM the night before. Harsh grader and gets mad at the class for not understanding.
He offers OH's everyday & multiple reviews during the week and weekend. The class is like 300 people & only like 20 people go to the reviews & even less go to TA OH's. If your doing bad its your fault. His grading is fair and he cares about you learning. I talked w/ the TA's and they said he is the fairest grader out of all the ochem series profs.
He is honestly a great professor! Whoever says otherwise just does not study, he has ALOT of resources that other chem professors dont offer. He is super caring and really wants us to succeed. Just read the book and go to his review sessions and tutoring and tbh you'll get at least a B. love the guy
We met 2x a week for 50min this isnt enough time to learn everything so go to reviews. At his reviews he would bring us snacks. He is really nice but he threw shade sometimes. I dont know what more he could do to help you succeed other than give you the answers. The people complaining obviously didnt take advantage of all the resources provided.
As someone who went to every review session, reads the book and takes notes from it, and does all the homework I feel like some of the reviews are biased. I'm struggling for a B in this class even though I put more time into it than other classes. When averages are C- and Ds I think theres something wrong with that.
in order to succeed, you need to go to all of the reviews and extra activities he plans, simply because he cannot cover enough information in two 50 minute lectures a week. this class SHOULD have a discussion, or another lecture. HOWEVER, knowing there's such limited time, he should give more examples and better lectures.
Nurco seems like someone who just doesn't want to lecture anymore. Nearly every lecture/ review session led by him is condescending and his remarks on Piazza are nearly always rude/ demeaning. That doesn't mean you'll fail though. Utilize, youtube, your textbook, and your TAs. Just don't depend on Nurco to teach you much at all - you'll be ok.
He's a decent lecturer given he only has 2 hours a week. You jus need to read the textbook, ask questions, and go to his review sessions and you're good. His practice quizzes help since they give you an idea of what he asks, but if you only rely on practice quizzes to learn, you won't pass no matter what ochem professor you have.
He isn't the best lecturer but he makes himself VERY accessible to students outside of lecture. I don't know what other professor would host 3 hour review session every week from 7-10pm besides him. If you only focus on learning from his lectures, you won't do terrible but you'll excel if you utilize all of his review session/office hours.
The professor was very unresponsive to questions about grading from the very beginning. The lectures were not enough and even though the class average was low there was no curve.
This is a very difficult class and 2 hours isnt enough! Hes kind and does a lot of review, but you MUST put in so much extra time if you want to succeed. Lectures are useless, read the textbook and go to reviews. Also no curve which is the only o chem class Ive heard of not having a curve even though final average was 66%
Nurco's not a great lecturer (slides are straight from the textbook), so you're better off reading the textbook. There's tons of homework, which takes forever, but helps you learn the concepts. Go to the review sessions (especially the problem-solving sessions)! He is much more responsive when you talk to him in person, especially if you go often
After having both Schore & Nasiri for 118A and B, respectively, I can honestly say that Dr. Nurco is a solid choice! He was clear with his expectations, lectures were concise and thorough especially with mechanisms. Very accessible outside of class with office hours and weekly problem sessions. Definitely a good choice for any chem 118 class!
Fair, caring and understanding professor. Does his best to help students understand a concept/topic. Hosts a lot of review/problem-solving sessions. There are topics in 118C that build off of 118A&B so he goes over some A&B topics, which help with understanding C a lot. Sometimes he relates a topic to real life situations making lecture more fun.
he's great, and the professor who puts the most work into helping his students pass out of all the UC Davis professors. strict grader, but there are no surprises and he's very specific on what he wants. he also holds multiple practice problem and study sessions outside of class and office hours per week. he's no Nasiri and won't try to trick you
Professor Nurco is a caring person who holds problem sovling sessions weekly and review sessions before every quiz. Those sessions really helps students to have a better understanding about what he taught in lectures.
I had Filloux for 118A and Beal for 118B, and I can say after taking this class that Nurco is the best professor of the series. No other professor provides weekly review sessions and as many office hours as he does. Grading is a bit picky and you still need to study quite a bit, but at least he tries to meet you halfway as an instructor.
Seems knowledgeable about the subject, BUT cannot put that into ways into which students can comprehend/understand. Exams are tough and practice midterms too easy. Holds a lot of office hours and review sessions.
Nurco is a great professor. He truly cares about his students and offers problem solving sessions on Monday nights which are super helpful. Practice tests are very similar to the midterms/ final and weekly discussion quizzes are group quizzes which is nice. By going to review sessions and understanding the practice tests, you can definitely do well
Lectures were all recorded. Difficult to grasp certain concepts because of professor-textbook-TA contradictions. Held a ton of office hours. Midterms/finals were like study guides. Review sessions before each test were recorded and helped a ton. Some material tested were only on one slide for 5 seconds during lecture? Really loved his chalk.
I took Nurco for my first quarter after transferring. He does offer a lot of office hours and weekly review sessions but I found him intimidating and unapproachable after seeing him openly mock students for their questions, and he yelled at a student right in front of me for not putting their initials on their midterm. No partial credit for rxns.
I have never seen someone as careless as he is. His exams will have topics that he did not even talk about in class and you will have to study them by yourself. I'm talking 50% of the exam is not covered in class. He is so disrespectful towards students that ask him. His grading is either you get the whole thing right or it is a zero. Avoid.
Show up to his review sessions, office hours, and every single other resource he gives you. If you put in the effort and show up, he'll make sure you understand everything well enough to do well. If you get the chance to take ochem with him, do it. You won't find a better professor at Davis.
Nurco is a decent professor. Definitely not as good as lievens so sometimes it can get confusing but he does everything he can to make sure you succeed. His exams are fair but they are pretty long/tedious and hes a harsh grader. barely any partial credit for difficult questions
Worst professor I have had in three years of college. Teaches ochem by reading off of slides. Has tons of OH but they are of no use when you are rude and unaccessible. Even the TA's hated him. Grades on all or nothing. No partial credit. Exams are unfair and hella long. Averages were around 40%. Curves to make students pass with a C though.
Worst professor I've had in college, half the time you ask him questions in lecture he can't actually answer the question and will instead deflect it, if you go to his office hours he is very condescending and makes you regret going, not only that he if you go to his office hours chances are he'll just pull out the textbook and tell you to look
Nurco used to be one of my favorite professors when I took him for 118A. In 118B, everything went downhill. For the first midterm he didn't give us a practice exam until the weekend before the exam. He does all or nothing points on most of the exam, leading to low scores. Very rude when you ask questions, doesn't seem to care about the student.
so for che118b w2020 we had two options for our professor, the dreaded nasiri or nurco, many of us having heard the horror stories of nasiri b-lined to nurco only to later find we've put ourselves into something even worse than nasiri, you'll be hard pressed to find a more disorganized, unfair, condescending, and bitter professor at davis.
The absolute worst. It appears that Nurco does not care about his students or how much he makes them struggle. Never have I had a professor so unorganized, stubborn, and unsympathetic. Do. Not. Take. Him
Besides the fact that his lectures are dry and unhelpful, he is an unsympathetic and rude human. Ive never encountered someone as bitter as him. He has no passion in the way he teaches. As a professor, youre supposed to encourage your students and help them learn to love the subject. He makes me want to drop out lol. Please avoid at all costs!
No partial credit, high point MC with 12 options, and lengthy exams for the time given. This would be ok if he was approachable. He was bitter and rude towards his students. During the COVID shut down, he kept all students in the dark about the final until two days before. Lectures are pointless. Ended up learning from the book and YouTube videos.
Avoid Nurco. His tests are very long for 60 min and nobody finished on time. On top of that, its all-or-nothing credit for exams. Literally, little to no partial credit is given. Exam average was always 40%. Wow. Lectures are all slides so there is very little interaction with drawing out mechanisms; he leaves that for you to do. Just steer away.
The class was already hard enough and his lectures made it more difficult. Lectures were dry and the lecture slides were scattered. Need the textbook because all his homework (not mandatory) were textbook problems, and the textbook is super difficult to understand and look at, especially online. His tests are SO hard and WAY too long for the time.
Winter Quarter 2020 will be forever known as the Pandemic Quarter. Nurco as my prof only raised my anxiety and stress x100 during this Pandemic. He failed to compromise with his students, he failed to take our mental health into account and mental capabilities. His tests are long and hes by far the toughest grader I've ever had. SKIP IF U CAN
lol I took nurco to avoid nasiri but honestly this man has me wishing I just took nasiri. Tests are LONG and NO PARTIAL CREDIT WHATSOEVER. You could literally get the same score as someone who doesnt know the material if you just make a minor mistake. His mcq on exams were SO DIFFICULT and because of covid our final was all MCQ. AVOID THIS MAN.
He doesnt really know chemistry (hes a crystallographer) so dont bother going to his office hours because youll probably get an I dont know. His grading is unreasonable too. My grade on a test fell 16% for not following instructions even though my actual chemistry was correct. Lectures are boring/ useless; you will need to read the book
Get ready to be preached by the textbook.
YouTube and lecture slides will be your best friends since nurco isnt a good lecturer. His exam questions are reasonable but his exams are extremely long for one hour (and he doesnt really give partial credit either) leading to horrible averages. He does curve generously at the end, but expect to assume youre failing for most of the quarter
He's a bad lecturer but does care about his students, holding weekly problem solving sessions. Tests are extremely hard, barely any partial credit is given and midterms are way too long for a 50 minute class. This was a very difficult class and you really have to work for it to get an above average grade.
Chem 118B is a really difficult class. However, Prof. Nurco offers lots of extra help outside of classroom lectures. Besides tons of office hours, he also holds a weekly problem solving session, 2 midterm review sessions, and a final review session. These really helped a lot for tackling this class. Take advantage of these resources!
this class was honestly really hard. some of that can be attributed to the subject rather than him, but his exams were extremely long and he doesn't give partial credit. he's not an awful professor, but i found his lectures mediocre and stopped going. The curve is generous, but that's because class averages were very low.
Lectures are very disorganized and unhelpful. Read the book and do the hw. First time teaching 118b and it seemed like he didn't understand a lot of the material. Practice exams are way easier than the actual exams. No partial credit on the exams so scores are extremely low but massive curve at the end (more generous than Nasirir).
He throws shade and doesnt really know organic chemistry (ask TAs for help instead). Definitely go to his problem review sessions, but the textbook homework isnt super useful (I didnt do any of it). His tests are definitely based on accuracy and speed rather than difficulty. Lectures are useless; textbook will save you as he lives by it too.
His class was so bad, I have ptsd looking at ochem problems. I got A's in 118A and 118C, but a C+ in his class. I have never encountered such a horrible prof in 3 years of college. He REALLY shouldn't be a teacher. He is rude and his tests are unreasonable. Wish there was a 0 rating. Only take him if he's your last resort and hope for the best.
Having taken the entire 118 series, Nurco was the worst professor I had for ochem. Exams were long, harshly graded, and did not reflect the optional homework at all. He teaches by reading off ppt slides, which might work for some subjects but DEFINITELY not ochem. The only plus is his massive curve since everyone was doing so poorly.
Hilarious bc the way that he neglected us was humorous. Written from a student during the PANDEMIC where learning is remote. After we pointed out downfalls of his course, he increased point values and lowered time allotted for quizzes. Leaves us in the dark. Tried to recycle lecture videos but failed, then failed to re upload adequately. Horrible
During the pandemic, Nurco has made no effort in accommodating students. He even suggested going to another place with better wi-fi if a student had poor internet connection. Quizzes are 4 minutes and are arbitrarily weighted No organization present at all, is quite unresponsive to concerns, and is generally uncaring and aloof. Avoid if you can
Dr. Nurco's exams are straightforward and look exactly like the practice midterms. He has a lot of practice problem sessions and office hours, which are a must to attend if you want to understand the material. Best to take notes from the textbook ahead of class, or the lectures don't make much sense.
The most unaccommodating professor during the pandemic by far! There are DAILY quizzes, some are 2 or 4 minutes, and amounts vary from 4-18. He neglects students' voices on Piazza. The material isn't hard. It's how he structured this course that frustrates many students. Also had him for 118A, also wasn't good back then.
Easily the worst professor I've had. Quizzes are given over a two hr period, allowing us not to be able to watch lecture during time period. 18 quizzes back to back today.. prof doesn't acknowledge our frustrations, syllabus is useless to follow because everyone is confused about what we're getting quizzed on. This prof needs to stop teaching.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Save yourself the trouble and try to get Lievens. Very unaccommodating to his students and does not follow his own syllabus. Honestly, lectures are recycled and useless so it's better to read the textbook. He does not listen to complaints or concerns, and all his changes make it harder to get a good grade. DO NOT TAKE
Dude. Nurco sucks. Do not take this class with him. He has no compassion for his students, it's already hard to take classes online in 2020, none the less with a teacher who is extremely inflexible, offers no clarity and does not respond to his students (when he does its done condescendingly and angry). He doesn't even stick to his own syllabus.
He had a very unclear way of teaching. I felt like I was floundering every day. The tests gave me so much anxiety bc I didn't know what to do. I suggest taking someone who actually teaches. He just used slides, and from taking chem again, THAT IS NOT THE WAY YOU TEACH CHEM. especially this one. good luck if you got him!
just horrible, avoid at all cost, this man and his class have no redeeming qualities
Every recent review is indicative of how he runs his class. I will say that what makes him worse than every other professor at UCD is how unflexible he goes about things. With every bad/unclear lecturer, they have redeeming qualities in that they set class curves, or give students points for unreasonable questions. Nurco does not do anything for us
I think prof Nurco is a good guy in general, but as a professor for this course he did not show much concern for his students needs especially in the middle of a pandemic. He never responded to anything in piazza after the first week, he did not post new lectures and the old videos were confusing to follow. material seems scattered. uncaring.
His lectures and slides are very clear to the point. Also, there were a lot of office hours to get any help about quizzes/homework/labs. Some students complained that he didnt communicate with them but he answered all the questions during his office hours (3 times a week, thats a lot compared to other professors) and tried to help us!
Homie aint even a professor. He gave us two minutes for our quizzes (pictures had to los and internet isnt the best), stated that there would be roughly 60 quizzes this summer but he said SIKE and gave us 102. he sucks at communicating and doesnt care for his students. he is chair of chem talked to him and he made no changes.. good luck
I usually never rate any of my professors but I absolutely had to in this case. Nurco was had completely no regard to listen to student concerns and provide help during an online version of the class during a pandemic. He was rude and unbothered. I regret not waiting and taking this class with a different professor. The worst experience so far.
2 minutes to load quiz, read question, and complete. Whatever happened to the 60 quizzes he initially stated. No more than 10 dropped quizzes he said, EVEN THO WE WENT OVER 100 QUIZZES. I also remember the 1 day we had like 18 quizzes. I don't even bother watching his recorded lectures from last year. He can't teach. Also no curve so rip
I don't eve have this much amount of work for my 5 unit class.
poor explanations of literally everything, even class expectations. doesn't care about students. lots of hw
Horrible lecturer. I wasn't gonna rate him for how bad he did a year or two ago but this quarter I'm mad enough to get my two classes of having him's opinion in.
He abused the amt of lecture he could have forcing students to watch many lecture hours and read the textbook before our scheduled lecture, which instead were practice problem hours. You are expected to do all this and labs and an insane harshly graded 3+ hr hw. Midterm was completely unfair and unlike any of the hw. No concern for any covid issues
The most unaccommodating professor I have ever had. Adds more lecture hours than he is allowed with about 6+ hours of hw a week. Not compassionate AT ALL. I asked about the workload on piazza and he deleted my question after students agreed, and did this to others who questioned him. Smart guy but he should not be a professor
I usually never rate professors but I had to this time. Professor Nurco is extremely unaccommodating to his students, especially during a time when all classes are remote. He assigns too much hw and the lectures are insanely long. The midterm was difficult with not enough time to finish. He deletes everything from piazza. Avoid like corona
Dr. Nurco was a researcher who probably would have done a lot more good in the fields of research. I had him winter quarter 2020, and have to say that his lectures are useless. I did more good reading Neil Schore's textbook than wasting my time in one of his lectures. When his lectures went online, I didnt watch a single lecture and did better
I had Nurco for CHE 8B Summer Session (online). This man does not care about the wellbeing of his students. He does not respond to Piazza comments and straight-up deletes any that he does not like (which is most of them). HIs workload is excessive and due dates are arbitrary. Most of all, he is incredibly condescending, bitter, and unhelpful.
Releases prelabs the night before they're due, homework due dates can be before the lectures that actually discuss the homework topics, and deletes comments that students make questioning his methods.
he's bad
He's not the best at explaining stuff but the material for 8A itself isn't too difficult. If you can ace the practice midterm, you can ace the exams. THAT BEING SAID, he is not lenient AT ALL so if you have any issues (exam formatted wrong, internet issues mid-test) your grade is gonna suffer. If you have an option, don't risk taking him.
As a Junior level student, I have never had a worse professor. Unaccommodating and irresponsible, he does not care about students and only about making himself look good. Tests are heavily weighted and rely more on formatting than on actual answers. I cannot believe a professor like this is allowed to teach at this point in time. Ridiculous.
He's horrible for the pandemic. He takes points off for things that aren't even related to ochem and things he never specified in the class, and you get 0 points for the whole question even if everything else is correct! He does not test on how much you know ochem. People who have iPads also have a large advantage, this is not an equitable class.
I had to drop this class for how ridiculous it was. He would delete any students concerns about the workload of the class (6+ hours a week for 2 units) and was just overall inconsiderate of students in the midst of a pandemic. Avoid at all costs.
Literal garbage. He does not care whatsoever about students struggling during this pandemic. He assigns outrageous amounts of work and impossible exams and shows no care when students speak out about the toll this class takes on them. Professors like this are the reason students have even worse mental health during an already excruciating time.
Easily the worst professor at UC Davis. Deletes questions he doesn't want to answer especially ones about his course structure. Not compassionate at all during the pandemic. Grades based on margin size rather than actual material. Should no longer be allowed to teach, please avoid. This class was an absolute joke and I learned nothing :)
Why he sucks: - Doesn't respond to emails, and when he does, he replies with incomplete sentences. Ignored all questions during zoom reviews. - You spend more time with Pearson. Back-to-back 90+ minute homework provided with wrong solutions without any work from yours truly, Dr. Nurco - He gives himself all the easy questions on the practice exams.
This guy is literally the worst chemistry professor on campus. He doesnt teach at all, his problem solving sessions dont help, textbook doesnt help, his OH dont help. His exams are crap, he is crap. Do not take him!
He does not care for his students at all, deletes negative piazza comments, and his lectures are extremely unhelpful. His tests were very hard and many students got 0's because "their margins were incorrectly sized" and other formatting "issues" even if the work was correct. 6+ hours of homework for a 2 unit class. Avoid him if you can
I am telling you right now to AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS. He assigns so much homework on a VERY FAULTY system & the excessive workload affects the 4 other classes you have to take to compensate for the class only being 2 units. He never taught only used recordings from last quarter. Dont even get me started on the bs test grading. Just DONT!
All the complaints are true yall, I wouldn't recommend. In his live sessions, he often refuses to give direct answers & ends up making a topic more confusing. If you HAVE to take him, just read the textbook, watch a couple of recordings of his sessions, and do the practice tests. Tests were hard, but doable if you study. Felt like a 4-unit class..
????He's pretty average in my opinion. I feel like a lot of the negative reviews teamed up to give him a bad rep. I just read the book and did pretty solid. And the exams were similar to the practice exams. I do admit the amount of HW was a lot and it did not feel like a 2 unit class but I really enjoyed his lectures and him as a professor
Nurco is a decent lecturer and knows what he's talking about, but that's where the good qualities end. Way too much work for a 2 unit class. There are a lot of resources available, but they're disorganized and overwhelming. Nurco responds poorly to criticism and can be rude in emails. I got an A by relying on the textbook for notes.
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. I know this is a two unit course but you're going to have to put in 4-5 units of work if you want that A. Attend office hours/problem solving sessions and ask questions.
He is NOT a good professor and it truthfully doesn't seem like he even likes to teach. If you can take anyone else plz save urself the trouble.
Dr. Nurco was not willing to compromise his class during COVID, but he wasn't impossible. His problem solving sessions and the textbook were preferable to lectures, but there were a lot of office hours from him and his TAs to try to be accessible. I don't think he was the best professor ever, but he was not as bad as a lot of these ratings say.
He was not being understanding of the situation. And he would always make students feel bad whenever someone would ask a question, so disrespectful.
He does not have the personality to teach, he is very rude, and not good at all at teaching; You have to do all the learning on your own, reading the textbook or getting help from a tutor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Please avoid taking Dr. Nurco if you can. He is unapproachable and lectures straight from the book. He assigns so much work for a 2 unit class and is very picky with how tests are submitted. Nurco's lectures were pointless and confusing. You'll do a better job teaching yourself 8A material. Also don't expect a big curve... Good luck.
Prof Nurco gives you the tools to be successful, he explains mechanisms over and over, problem solving, and flashcards are also useful. He is caring and will give you advice on how to succeed if you ask during OH. The workload is heavy, and grading is tough but you are well warned going into it. Nurco is pretty solid if you utilize the tools given.
Nurco posts like a million "pre-lecture" and then you have to do the actual lecture and THE HOMEWORK before the lecture, which makes 0 sense. His lectures were not clear at all, he would not answer student's questions he would just say to all of them "ask in office hours". Not enough time for tests. Final was completely different than what he told
Workload is definitely heavy for a 2 unit class. Do the homework its good practice, go to problem solving sessions and office hours and watch the lectures, you need to put in work for this class. He's very specific on how to take the written tests just follow instructions. Pretty good professor if you focus on his teaching and not his personality.
Nurco does not care for his students in the slightest. He continually ignores concerns on piazza and deletes any questions and posts that showcase concern about how the class is being handled. His tests are not consistent with what he teaches in class, and is overall very rude and condescending, making his class a hostile learning environment.
He supplied way too many resources to complete them all but you don't have to do everything. I only did the textbook, homeworkactice exams & got a B+. No partial credit tho so you have to be super careful on tests. He's a poor lecturer, uncommunicative online, but has a clear grading structure (v strict tho). A Teach Yourself class but doable.
the hardest prof i have ever had in my 3 years! on exams there no partial credit. I went to one OH and he was helpful, so maybe he was a nice person but bad prof. lots of hw, took hours. expected a lot from students. i also was in close contact with 4 covid positive ppl and when i informed him he was super dismissive
Nurco is not anywhere near as bad as reviews make him seem!! Worst thing is almost no partial credit. Only class where textbook was actually helpful-- watch recorded lectures!!! They're short (2x speed and still sounds normal) and helpful. People complained he didn't teach but it's bc he did flipped classroom- live class is for examples only
The class should not have been 2 units I thought I was going to die. He gives you everything you need to succeed JUST PLEASE KNOW YOU NEED TO PUT A TON OF TIME INTO THIS CLASS. He's really nice and I feel bad people give him shiz he is really trying. Ochem is hard and I wouldn't want to be doing what he is doing.
Tough course, teacher expects a lot from students. Be prepared to spend a lot of time doing practice problems and reading the book outside of class. He is hardcore Ochem Teacher. Not flexible about COVID with coursework, felt like passing the course is barely surviving. Takes points off for anything wrong with no partial credit.
His class made me consider dropping out. I have never met a professor who grades as harshly or gives ZEROS to dozens of students on midterms because he doesn't like that your scan isn't perfect. He was also transphobic and a completely horrible person when reached out to via email or piazza. Save yourself and your mental health- take any other prof
Honestly not terrible at presenting the material BUT the tests are VERY difficult and must be PERFECT. He often ignores and deletes questions on piazza making it useless. SO MUCH homework which gives you absolutely no time for other classes. Please save yourself and avoid unless you really want to suffer mentally. Maybe its just his online format.
Tests were graded harshly, but were in the same format as practice tests given prior. None of the material on the tests was unexpected, though some questions required thinking outside the box with the knowledge we had acquired. Dr. Nurco as a person is frank and pragmatic, but he was always there to help us succeed. Would take again.
very good professor easy class free A
literally, the worst. Just like his feedback on our work, I refuse to be constructive.
Grading was very harsh and the quizzes are super annoying. He was nice during lecture but kinda rude when answering questions online. Idk if it was bc of online lab, but man I dreaded this class. His curve was good and he relayed information well. Make sure to read the textbook if you want to do well on the quizzes.
By far the worst professor I have had in my entire college experience. I have never had to drop a 2 unit class due to the amount of stress. He expects too much out of a 2 unit class and I personally did not like his teaching style. I attended tutoring, office hours and had a private tutor. No one can say I did not take advantage of my resources.
professor was REALLY rude and condescending, lectures were not that clear especially since this is o chem we are talking about, take another professor please
