very good
He is very nice person and he teaches very well. You will learn a lot from his class
Very well organized, caring instructor. He is so much open to any suggestion regarding class’s material. He is always and I mean always available, I don’t recall any single time that I asked him to be in the lab on Friday and he has hesitated. Always has been there. Don’t expect to be an easy A class, which is not, and you have to study very hard.
He is a great professor, very helpful and always available to help the students. Need to attend class and read the book and study well for the exams to get an” A". His exams are very fair and he grade fair as well. Highly recommended to take his class. He is very organized and well prepared. One of the best professors I have had so far.
gotta read the textbook before the class. pretty hard.
unclear
Odom is a great teacher. He is always available to help his students. If we don't understand the material he takes the time to go over it again until it is clear to us. I would recommend him to anyone. Keep in mind genetics in general is a hard subject so you have to read and keep up with homework to pass.

Dr. Odom is pretty cool prof but the subject is hard itself and he didn't explain it good. Yes, there are people who have nothing else to do but study genetics, PPL GET A LIFE! Those who got to work and take another 11 units of hard classes didn't get time to study and try to understand. And what is this when less than 5% of class gets B+ and highe
Odom is great, as the other person mentioned, we need more true professionals like him. I took genetics in addition to ochem and physics and did well, so don't make excuses. It's idiotic to put work as a priority over school, which is your future. Maybe people should listen during class instead of going on myspace. Just a tip.

One of the best professors CSUN has. Hopefully he will get his own lab soon.
Excellent teacher. Makes himself available after class and weekends to hold exam reviews. Exams are fair, but a little on the tough side. Inflexible on grade, if you are even one tenth of a percent away from next higher grade, too bad. Does give some extra credit on each exam though. Learned a lot, Dr. Odom is knowledgeable and personable.
he's great! one of the best @ CSUN. very well organized. no tricks up his sleeves. easy going and easy to talk to. he really truly cares about his students not like most other profs that care about their research. they need to learn from Dr. Odom!
He is the most helpful, understanding professor I've taken at CSUN. He's not easy, you have to study to get an A and he challenges you on his tests but they are doable. He gives extra credit on tests, extra lab time to study, extended(agreeable and fair) deadlines. You really can't complain about him. He knows so much but yes, he can be boring.
Well prepared slides are helpful if you are a powerpoint type. However, if you are not, he is extremely clear and paced in describing details, that makes for valuable note-taking opportunities. Exams are made up of many questions and tricky; however, he does grade leniently.
He is one of the most genuine, intelligent, and kind professor. He is always at office hours and responds to emails quickly. Genetics is verrry demanding. We had 4 midterms, final & a 10-pg. term paper. Be prepared to spend a lot of time for this class.
Very well organized. Just follow the lecture and homework. Very helpful. Just study hard and you will be fine.
really awesome professor, one of the few at csun. very helpful, explains clearly, gives extra credit. course material not easy but professor helps out a lot! would take this prof for anything!
one of the best bio teachers at csun.TAKE HIM, you wont regret it. Even bio 107 is a hard class, i did not study that much and got a good grade. focus on the notes he gives you.most of the quizzes are take home and if it was in class quiz we worked in groups.
Best teacher! Really cares about his students, does everything he can to help you learn...he even does review question answer sessions before the test...hes not easy, obviously its bio but hes a really good teacher
woowww! cant stand this guy. he is more dull than a book!!! the subject sucks, and he doesnt make it of any interest! he gives you 4 midterms, and 10pg paper, and you have to study day and night to pass. good luck.
I just took the final for this class 2 hours ago, the final was not hard compared to the exams, because there were 20 out 50 questions from the department. The class is was very hard for me and challenging, the test are all from the notes and you have to the hw, it helps alot. Dr. Odom is a nice guy and vey helpful except the class is very boring an
i must admit odom is a really nice guy but the lectures are so boring and dull, i tried so hard to be interested but his technique of teaching or maybe his presence was just not getting into me. I went to almost everyclass session probably missed only 2 or 3 and still did not learn a whole lot, class is almost like a self taught type of class
BORING but THE BEST I mean THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BEST
He is really good at teaching this subject. very clear when explaining everything. goes into extreme detail, even when not necessary. He does question answer sessions the weekends before a test, usually does 2, one sunday and one monday. really a great teacher!!
genetics is not an easy subject but he teaches good, and he is so nice, if you study youll get an A
he really is a great teacher, POD's are easy and he grades based on completion. the term paper is a pain, but a learning experience. any reason i didn't do well was my own fault because he did his part completely.
Genetics in itself is extremely hard, but he tries his best to make it understandable even though it does get very confusing. Doing the problems in the back of the book is essential (i never read, just did the problems) because all of the test is JUST PROBLEMS (1 or 2 concept questions only) He made genetics... manageable.
This class is hard, the key to success in this class is to do the underlined problems assigned and understand them. memorize and understand the concepts in the notes, and go to study sessions. POD's help a lot so make sure u go over them before exams.Dr. Odom is very nice and helpful during office hrs and he will explain his best to help u understa
his exams are tough but you will learn a lot. its a very interesting course. no book required. he's very helpful and the papers he makes you read are very interesting. 3 exams and 3 papers
He is a great professor, he devote his time in the weekend for solving section. he tries to help student the best he could. the tests are hard make sure to do a lot of problems. it was great experience after all
Horrible professor, a handful of kids cheated in the spring semester on their final so he decided to take out his anger in the summer session. He teaches you the basics of genetics/what the book covers, but the exams are all application. Some of the material in the test would be the first time you'll be seeing it. Each exam on average takes 3 hours
I took him over the summer and it was hell.4midterms in bluebook which normally takes about 2.5-3 hrs.Do lots of problems and Memorize his POD's word by word cause at least one or two are going to be on every exam.HE curves at the end.DONT take if your course load is heavy.
I took him for summer and the set curve is set at 89% for an A-. I don't know what the other person before me commented about a curve in summer school, since there was one kid always getting over 100% on all exams which was the reason Odom couldn't change the set curve. He treats students grades like lab experiments, expendable. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!
really hard class and have to do lots of problems. he grades pretty hard.
Took this class in the summer and you better have a lot of time to sit and do problems. His exams are multiple choice and pretty tricky. If you want to pass this class you have to put the time fo rit
Like the other comments, his class is pretty tough. There is lots of studying to do and he grades a bit hard.
tough course but you will learn a lot. dr odom is always willing to help and tries his best to get people to learn the material. must do problems in the book to pass
Dr. Odom, what a wonderful teacher he is. He is clear, no fuss, and cares about his students. He clearly LOVES teaching... You really have to experience him. Have only admiration for this man. Histology is a fun class and Dr. Odom puts some physiology in it too. Take him for Genetics and any other classes he teaches. See you in Hum Genetics!
Dr. Odom is a great teacher! He makes every effort to help his students in anyway possible (i.e. coming in on the weekend) Lecture exams are hard, practicals are a bit easier, but if you're looking for a cake-walk class, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! The material is easy, there is just A LOT!! The lab notebook is a pain in the arse!!
as the other comments say dr. odom is the best bio prof at csun. he's very nice and helpful. he comes in on holidays, sundays and whenever you need him to review. he's a very dedicated professor. his exams are a bit tough but they challenge you and see if ur able to think. lab exams tend to be easier than lecture.
Knows his stuff, but the tests were so tough. You neeed to be able to teach yourself from the book. DO NOT FALL BEHIND ON READING!!! ASK FOR HELP AS SOON AS YOU NEED IT< OR YOU WILL NOT PASS.
csun screwed him over by giving him 4 bio classes when i had him. he was really unorganized and things weren't done on time. gave us a lot of slack. his power points follow the book exactly. read the book, understand the concepts, and you should be fine. his tests are a bit hard. he wants you to understand the concept, not just regurgitate info.
Dr. Odom is an excellent and dedicated professor. Keeps students engaged and entertained. Always willing to help out/answer questions. =) He is very hard, but also very straight forward. Ask him what he's looking for, and he'll tell you. Would definitely recommended him for lower and upper division courses.
He was a very patient, dedicated teacher that donated a lot of his free time to helping students understand genetics. It was difficult to get back assignments and grades from him, homework questions were too complex at times but studying lecture notes helped with tests.
Just took his first exam and got 24/50. Studied for 3 whole days and still failed but luckily he added 10 pts. for everyone.. cuz everyone did bad! He's a grad professor so it explains why he's a lot tougher. Really really understand the concepts (no joke!) and always follow the reading (I did n still did bad). I do not recommend. Nice guy though.
He spends way to much time for this class, scored high 90's on first two tests b/c they were simple problem solving questions...his lectures he attempts to make it clear however he confuses students...and he constantly sends out emails throughout day sometimes at even 2 or 3 am...so turn of push notification on your phones if taking his class
He is the bestttttt, take him , he is a very nice guy, teaches well, clear , study the power points m do the homework, and you'll get a good grade
I don't get what everyone is saying. Ya he's a realllyyyy helpful professor with a lot of problem solving sessions. BUT this is the hardest class I have ever taken. His tests are ridiculous. Extremely hard like no way of passing. You need to ONLY have this class to pass. Stay away take someone else.
Possibly the best professor I will ever have at CSUN. Knows the subject backwards and forward, answers questions in a crystal clear manner, & dedicates a great deal of time to ensure his students learn the material. His tests are by no means impossible, I got an A on most of them. He just makes sure you actually studied and understand the material.
Very disorganized, gives tests at HIS level, not ours so he is always having to adjust the score because he made it too hard. Extremely difficult to stay awake during his lectures as he's incredibly boring. Always says he will post things on moodle to help us but never ends up doing it. I wish I took a different professor.
Dr. Odom doesn't ask straight-forward questions. you have to understand the concept taught in order to answer the question. he doesn't want you to regurgitate info. honestly, he's not that hard. he wants you to understand the material, so don't be lazy. he is an excellent prof and quite dedicated to his job. 3 tests, weekly quizzes, and final.
I will begin by saying this is your typical weed-out class for biology. No matter who you take this subject with it will most likely be difficult. Odom is a very committed teacher and dedicates more time to students than anyone I've had. His tests are hard but he makes every effort to make you understand the material. Study and you will do well.
Dr Odom is a great professor. He cares very much about his students and is always available outside of class for help. Lecture notes are very good, didnt even need the book just study notes. The class itself has alot of material but as long as u attend class and study the notes you will be alright. Definitely recommend him as a teacher
Dr Odom is a great professor. he is always available outside of class if u need help. This class is pretty hard and requires alot of work and study but odom does a great job in explaining the material. there is hw and a research paper along with 4 tests. if u want to pass you definitely need to put time into the class.
Great professor! He is very dedicated to helping his students and strives to make sure everyone understands what he teaches. I've never seen/had a professor so willing to help students. The subject is hard but with effort and dedication you can pass with a good grade. Do the hw and practice problems because similar ones will be on the exams!
Dr. Odom is one of the most awesome and patient professors I've ever had. He holds multiple sessions prior to tests (even on the weekends) and will demonstrate how to solve a problem 20 times if that's what it takes for people to understand it and doesn't make you feel stupid. Tests are challenging, but if you want an easy A try a different major.
SUCH a great professor. He knows everything about his subject. He held problem solving sessions every week, including on the weekends - That's right, he went out of his way and taught 7 days a week to help us pass. I got 80% and lower on all tests, and pulled an 87% on the final which gave me a B in the class. Would definitely recommend!!!
At first you're like, oh he is a good teacher, he just goes fast. the first quiz and exam are ok, what you would expect from a physiology class, but as you go on his test are near impossible to pass. If your going to take his class you better have easy classes because your going to need to study for his class a huge amount
The best professor I have had BY FAR. He knows so much about the material that he has to stop himself from going into too much detail. Physio is hard in itself so do not blame him. He is very helpful at his office hours and even has review sessions on WEEKENDS. He knows this is tough material and he does his best to help. Take if you want to learn.
Not a science guy, gave up halfway, changed majors, but even I could tell THIS PROFESSOR IS GREAT. Tests hard(~+5-10% grade curve) but good amt. are taken from online quizzes. Skimmed ppt.s & never opened book; got C. Retake tests INSANELY hard. Final replaces lowest test score assumin its higher. Just remember PHYSIO IS SUPPOSED TO BE HARD.
Simply the best. This man knows how to teach -- after taking this course I never had to re-review any of the genetics material for any of my 400+ level courses. Teaches the right mix of theory and detail. He's also very concerned with teaching the most current developments in the subject. Really puts himself out there to help you succeed!
He is an incredible, patient, and honest guy.Biology is not a course where you can just sit through lectures and think you can take a quiz or exam like its nothing. He emphasizes alot but worth it. Answers questions to the best extent and replies to emails. Book is mandatory and lectures as well. I found it helpful to record his lectures for review
Dr. Odom is by far the best professor at CSUN that I have taken. You must be a studious student to do well in his class. He knows his stuff&you need to be responsible for keeping up with his lectures. His tests require you to know everything; he is very helpful in helping each of his students pass his class he goes over&beyond; very dedicated!
I have a special place in my heart for Dr. Odom. I end up comparing every single professor I take to him and absolutely no one ever compares. This class has a lot of info, YOU MUST STUDY! Exams are based on the notes, but you must understand concepts, not just memorize a bunch of info. Great guy, great professor-- he really goes above & beyond.
Professor Odom is a very patient and kind man. He is very clear on the topic and really tries to have students understand the material. The subject is just a VERY tough one. 2 midterms and 1 final with 100 pts additional. I wish that there were maybe a bit more "filler" material to help my grade but other than that very good teacher.
He's a good professor, lectures well & really goes out of his way to help his students. However, it really pisses me off that his exam questions dont resemble the hw at all. It's the same material, just asked in a different way. It really throws u off because if you learn it a certain way you expect to see it on the exam in the same format.
He is a good professor and very knowledgeable. His tests however are extremely difficult and make it very hard to get a good grade because the questions are very wordy and intricate.
He is a hard professor, I recommend to take someone else.
Great professor but exams are extremely tricky and wordy. He goes into way too much detail for a physiology course. The tests are absolutely everything on the slides. A lot of detail and a lot of work for a physiology course. Overall nice guy and very approachable and is excited about the subject.
this was the hardest class i've taken in my life. you have to be a genius to get an A. he is very nice and gives additional points as well as curves sometimes. just consider yourself lucky he gives multiple choice, if it was short answer, everyone would be failing for sure. the average grade for the tests is like 50%, its not him though, its bio281
Super nice guy, extremely hard on tests. I want to cry because I didn't pass. I thought I tried so hard and tried to study as much as I could and when it came to the final, it was like I was looking at it for the first time.
His tests are really hard. Even tho its exactly the material from the slides, u have to learn the material in a different way. I really suggest not take him. I would advise you take another professor if you want a good grade and to be able to pass BIO 281. This was the hardest class that i've took in life! Im telling you, if u do take him good luck
He's a nice guy, but a terrible professor. Concentrates more on concepts in lecture, but tests you on problems. He's also very knowledgable on the subject, but the questions he asked were very tricky. Honestly, do yourself a huge favor and take Genetics with someone else, unless you like repeating classes.
Hard class, though it was awesome with Dr Odom. Put in the time & study, organize things in your head and you will be fine. Exams arent hard if you have the material down. Record lectures and go over slides afterwards while taking notes and listening to the recordings, make flashcards, study, participate, get an A, become a physician, save lives.
He is not hard at all. Here is my tip: do all the homework problems AND PRACTICE ANSWERING THESE PROBLEMS QUICKLY! That's really the key here. You need to be able to answer WORD PROBLEMS quickly and correctly in order to do well on the exams. I got a C- on the 1st exam, but managed to get an A- on the course. He curves generously also. I mean ~8%+.
extremely helpful, very clear, and very generous on grading. Almost too generous as Every test gets curved almost a whole grade up! However, a skill you MUST learn and apply in this class in order to get an A is solving problems at a FAST pace. If you can do this right at the 1st exam, expect an A in the class. I think one of the easiest profs.
1st exam is the hardest, not because of the difficulty of the material, but because of the volume of questions. If you can mentally anticipate a high volume exam right at the 1st one, you will get an A in this course. Final exam was really easy, I studied minimally for it and did really good. It also helps if you're good in math (probabilities).
Please stay away bio 360. much harder than expected. HARD HARD HARD. The material s fine but the tests are extremely tricky. Not an easy A or B or C
Although I'm obsessed with Human A & P, this class was incredibly rough for me. His tests are pretty hard but he curves them. He is overly knowledgable of his material & at times goes into too much detail for the short amount of lecture time allowed. Study the lecture slides like the bible! If you know everything on the slides, you will pass!
I took this course, and was very excited, but the instructor is horrible! he rambles in his lectures, which causes him to never finish and thus you have to go home and watch the remainder of the lecture online. his tests are basically not lecture related! he was not helpful at all! was vague about everything! if u can, take another instructor
Professor runs on tangents at times, and the material is hard. You have to really (really) study. It's mostly about memorization. His tests are straightforward but he makes the class harder than necessary. He is not personable and getting him to explain something during class is like pulling teeth. Would recommend a different professor.
I have to disagree with all you people complaining. Stop your whining. Just because YOU don't study doesn't mean you get to complain that he is "hard". It's not that hard, if you study. Odom is amazing and makes time to help out students. He's definitely one of a kind. Just go over the power points and do the hw, and you will be fine.
this class is death.. i took his 3 hour once a week class so i dont know how it is for other classes. this guy is a genius and knows everything about biology. to get an A you need to be paying attention 100% because he does not review and will keep talking and talking until someone stops him. if you get lost at any point early on, youre doomed
He is the BEST!! He will come on weekends or whenever you need him to just to help out his students and make sure they understand every concept. Exams are not easy but it's because the subject itself is hard. You will not find a better professor who will teach you genetics and prepare you for the exams.
Dr. Odom is great! The people that complain are the ones that don't even bother to try. All you really have to do is dedicate some time to this class and you will get a good grade. He helps his students out as much as possible. He is always there and will go to extremes to make sure that you understand everything. Fair professor!
Dr. Odom is probably the best at CSUN He will definitely challenge you but there is no reason for you not to get good grade. 3 Exams, each is curved and the final can replace your lowest test score. Study and you should be fine. Oh and don't hesitate to ask for help, it's a difficult subject but he is always there to help in any way possible!
Dr. Odom gets carried away at times because he loves the subject so much. He is a genius and if you pay attention and read the assigned material you will pass. It's a very tough class but he is very helpful and does lecture capture and amazing slides to study off of. He is so nerdy I love it!!!
I was warned NOT to take him, and I should've listened. NO study guides, lots of information to learn, and the final is cumulative. He's extremely bright and knows everything on the subject. He's test questions were too detailed and confusing.
OMG... This material comes naturally to me and I understand the concepts fairly well before I took the class and I barely passed due to his insanely detailed exams. I aced the practice quizzes but practically bombed his exams, no matter how much I studied it was never enough. Often the exam questions were based on the tiny font in his notes.
Genetics is a very hard subject no matter what professor you take. Dr. Odom is extremely helpful and even has various study sessions throughout the week, including weekends. His exams were tricky but you do get partial credit even though they are multiple choice.
He was an amazing teacher. He is great at explaining this subject, however the class is not easy. Genetics with any teacher is tough. he genuinely cares about how well his students do and takes time out of his schedule to guide study sessions with his students. This isnt an easy course and you have to put effort in.
I think the teacher is awesome in every way and his additional assignments are easy too which you take online. but when I got the exam paper I was shocked by the insanely detailed information, which were never seen in any of the additional assignments and it is absolutely hard. i would take it again if i have the chance but i will study every day
Dr. Odom is the man. He's extremely organized and clear in lecture, and goes above and beyond when it comes to being an extra helpful resource for students. His exams are challenging, there's no way around that. Not everyone will be able to do well even if you work on it. You will, however, learn a LOT of genetics in this class.
Not even finished with the course yet and I'm here to warn you all to choose someone else for your physiology professor. This guy clearly knows his stuff, but he moves FAST. The material isn't impossible, but unfortunately his tests are. Class average for the midterm was a 54%. He acts like we are all 20 year experts on the subject. Ridiculous.
Professor Odom is a genius - the class is hard, one of the hardest I've taken, but he tries to make it easy with the online practice quizzes and sometimes he offers the scratch off answer sheets which help. If I could re-do things, I would've gone to office hours for more guidance on how to pass with an A.
Amazing professor. Takes the massive amount of material that is physiology and distills it to key concepts, then reinforces those concepts throughout the course. Exams are NOT that hard & grading is fair. My #1 tip is to study UBER hard for the 1st exam - you'll need that material for the rest of the class and won't have time to study it later.
Great professor! ( I am a bio major). I would take any class he is teaching. Very helpful, very thoroughclear, very nice. My point is if you are good at bio, take him, if you are not, take him. You will not pass if you don't put in the time and effort. Couple students missed class during flu season and he actually helped us catch up.
Tests may be tough sometimes, but thats only because he wants to make sure you understand the material. I can honestly say he is one of the best professors at CSUN. If you genuinely want to learn, TAKE HIM! He's not easy; you have to work your butt off. If you need help, he will always be there to clarify anything. You could tell he loves his job!
The lectures are long and very detailed and the test are equally as difficult. Be prepared to read and study. I will have to retake this class with another professor.
Dr. Odom is an amazing teacher. He really knows what he is talking about. He is easy to learn from, however, his classes are challenging. You really have to give it all your effort to get that A, but it is very possible. I took Genetics with him in the summer and even though I got a C, I admire him a lot. He assigns a quiz every week 3 practicals
Worst class ever, Professor Odom's lecture are organized but he uses all the easy examples in class, leaves the complicated ones for the test. There are 3 exams and a final. More than half the class was failing. It's so bad that the department provides a few questions on the final... Something needs to be done.
Dr. Odom is brilliant. He'll take tons of time with you to explain difficult concepts if you go to him and just ask. He never makes you feel stupid even if you really don't get something, but he expects you to do the work. 360 is hard and so are his exams. study and you'll be ok. (And all the 360 finals have some dept questions, its req'd)
If you need to learn something clearly and in depth Dr. Odom is your professor. I still use the methods he taught me in lab to this day. He will sit and talk to you until you understand the question. You have to put in the work to get the grade though.
If you are not a good test taker, this class is not for you. You will sit in class and think "wow I'm understanding all this" His test are ridiculously hard. In general the subject is hard but his test are unfair. Although he is a great teacher, one of the best for genetics. His class is ruining my gpa right now.
He knows the material and teaches it well.
This class is extremely in-depth, great for a better understanding of the body and its systems. Dr. Odom is one of the most dedicated and knowledgable professors I have had in my academic career. That being said, he expects you to know the material and be able to apply it in lab. His exams are tough and detailed but it's nothing he didn't explain.
Dr. Odom is an amazing lecturer. He explains thing so well, and lecture capture is a great way to make sure you definetly understand it. He explains clearly. His exams however are meant to trick you and test your ability to take an exam. Read through everything carefully and he is always there to help. He's very helpful and wants you to do well
Odom is very thorough and he will test you on EVERYTHING that comes out of his oral orfice. Take very good notes and pray he feels good that day when he grades your test.
Dr Odom is one of the most organized and thorough professors I've had at CSUN. When I say he cares about his students (don't take that basically). He literally has problem solving sessions during the weekends, and when he grades your multiple choice, he gives you feedback on the topics he thinks you're weak in. Must be in class -- quiz everyday
This Professor is very knowledgeable about the subject and he is very reasonable with grading and expectations for the course. He is willing to work with the students to help them succeed. I would recommend taking this class.
Beware. If you are not a good test taker then do not take him. His tests are extremely difficult. Whats worse he does not give you a study guide and his finals culmulative. Even his midterms include a lot of previous sections from past lectures and tests. He teaches his students as if they're grad students. Take Dr Ebseshahidi for Bio 281.
Dr. Odom is amazing! Physiology is a tough subject. That being said he is willing to go out of his way to help students out. Based on demand, he will schedule extra study sessions for students who are struggling in class. His objectives and key concepts are his study guides. He makes sure his students have all the tools needed to succeed.
Yea he is a cool guy, but not a great teacher. There is a reason he had to do those extra study sessions on the weekends. If you want to save your GPA. do not take him. rather take Professor Cohen. He should not be teaching in a undergraduate level. Hes perfect for Bio Masters Students
Does not give a study guide, and he expects you to know everything from day 1!! Tests are crazy difficult, the only good thing about him is that his additional assignment points did save me from getting a lower grade. Me and I bet many students have to retake this class.
He is a nice and caring guy, and is willing to help students but sometimes his way of teachings are not concise and simple. His tests are too detailed and extremely difficult. Only if he toned down his lectures a bit, and actually gave us a study guide and better prepared us for his tough exams. than I would have enjoyed his Physiology class more.
Do yourself a favor, if you care much about your GPA then I would not highly recommend this guy. His tests are way too difficult. I studied my hearts out for his exams, and I failed every one of his tests. Luckily his additional assignment points helped boost me up a little. but in the end I still have to retake this class with another Professor.
Professor Odom is a great professor but is really heavy on lectures. He usually takes up the whole hour and fifteen minutes because of the information he throws at you. He's definitely passionate about physio. His tests are difficult and he doesn't have a study guide so it is hard to prepare the exam. Essentially, just study each chapter in detail.
He's a good teacher. Extremely passionate and detailed with his lectures, his tests were hard but he curves them. There were instances where I could have gotten a C on a midterm but the curve bumped me to an A. His additional assignments will also make a huge difference in your grade. I was on track with getting a C in the class but got a B instead
He is an amazing professor, however it was much harder than I expected. If you have no other choice but to take this class, then record lectures, sit in the front, go to office hours and read every day! I was incredibly shocked as I took his tests. They were so detailed, some of the questions were paragraphs. I wish I took it with a diff prof.
If you actually want to learn about physiology, this is the class to take. The lectures are packed to the brim with tons of information, so you're definitely going to want to record them. No homework besides extra credit, but do it! The tests are multiple choice and curved, but still require you to think. Definitely taking him again in the future.
Gets you ready for Harvard Medical School. lol
Very lecture heavy, makes everything harder than its supposed to be. Loves making crosses for ALOT and makes the most difficult exams in the whole college campus
Good person, and a great professor. You can tell that he genuinely wants you to learn and do well. He will go out of his way to help you understand the material. My only complaint is that his tests are very difficult. He designs them to take up almost the entire class period. You have to know the info, and know it quickly. He's great, but tough.
Great professor. He genuinely cares about his students. He schedules study sessions for his students before exams. Exams are difficult and they're all cumulative but he curves them. Study hard, read the book and try to study each chapter in detail. Physiology isn't an easy class but if you really want to learn take it with him.
Only prof I know that will have problem solving sessions on the weekends, and whenever the class as a whole asks for one. But be warned that his exams are DIFFICULT. This isnt a memorization type of class, its a lot of conceptual questions that will make you question LIFE. Do NOT take during summer unless your ready to not sleep.
Great at lectures, always available during office hours, and does problem solving sessions on the weekends (including Sunday). Who does that? He is a really dedicated professor! Earlier exams are more calculation based. If you have a good foundation on probabilities, you will do great! Later exams are more memorization, almost cell bio-ish.
Dr. Odom is a very good professor. The material is a lot and can be difficult. He is very well prepared for each class and he explains the material very well! His exams are difficult, so you need to attend class and put in the effort. I recorded all of his lectures which helped out a lot. He has study sessions before each exam which are helpful.
Long long lectures with too much information and detail. Tests are very difficult so you really need to read each question multiple times. Study sessions before each exam. Online homeworks to review each chapter.
Dr Odom is by far the best instructor I've ever had , his exams are not hard at all , if you study the notes (slides) well you'll do great I don't know why some people put bad comments saying his tests are hard !!!!!! He does a great job of explaining the material , he is very knowledgeable . I highly recommend him.
I liked the class. Professor Odom is a great professor. His exams can be tough but they assess you on whether you can apply the material or just memorized it. He holds weekend problem solving sessions to help people and go over stuff. He genuinely cares. He offers alot of incentives you just have to be willing to seize them. You need to study.
For those people who think Dr. Odom is a though grader or the course is heavy/ tests are hard .... and they still want to go to medical school pleaseeeee you need to re-think your major . If you really listen to the lectures and study the notes ONLY you should be able to get a good grade , if not there is something wrong ....
Dr. Odom's class is very difficult, but if you pay attention to the powerpoint slides and watch lecture capture, you should be fine. He gives people a lot of chances to pass, and cares about his students. If you are struggling go to his office hours, focus on the key concepts he places on the begining ,and be able to apply them.
I truly enjoyed his class. He works 7 days a week, will grade your exams on time and respond to your emails. I only got a C in the class but I learned A LOT. Taking molecular diagnostics this semester and doing great just because of the knowledge from his class. He"s the best in the bio department. Very passionate about teaching.
Love this professor so much! He literally slows his lectures down if you ask and will repeat a concept over until you understand. He even offers over the weekend sessions. Attending them was beyond helpful and he's always at office hours. Its physiology so obviously it's not an easy A, but he provides you will all the tools you'll need to pass!
He is passionate about what he is lecturing. He takes time outside of class to do study groups and explains what you don't understand in class. The math is tricky but he will repeat if you are having trouble. Will tell you what to focus on for the exams. He has in-class assignments. Also, all homework online. Only two writing assignments.
Professor lectures all class long. All of his test do not have anything to do with his slides. My tutor is better than my lecturer. He reads off of his power points.
He is very passionate about this topic. But it can be very difficult to pass because the class grade is heavily based on the exam scores. The exams are super difficult. Be ready to study every week because the exams are cumulative. If you are not the type that likes to study every week or big exams, do not take him. Hard to get an A or B.
Prof Odom is an amazing professor, the material is just incredibly difficult, he is very clear in his lecturing and grading, you just really need to work hard to pass the class. My recommendation going into this class, is to not skip class, focus on the key concepts, and read after class that same day.
This is never going to be an easy class, but an A is definitely possible if you put in the effort. Odom is passionate and knowledgeable about physiology, and is very clear in answering any questions you may have. His tests are challenging and cumulative but very doable if you study hard and keep up. He also posts lectures online for review at home!
He's not a bad professor. He is very much detail oriented so get ready to memorize every single detail. His grading % was kind of high considering that it is a hard science class (72% for a solid C). No extra credit and no curve. A really hard class.
The tests were difficult, be aware of certain topics he wants you to know for the test, the cover picture on his slides is a good hint. Make sure you have time to review before each test a month before the test. Cell bio itself is a very condensed subject, with a lot to memorize, just make sure you have a lot of time to study and review each slide.
Dr. Odom knows what he's talking about. works 25/8 and ALWAYS available. sets up problem-solving sessions over the weekend to help students out. to pass his tests, you have to be quick (time is always an issue) and make sure you UNDERSTAND the material rather than memorize. homework/quizzes are optional but help ur grade. 3 exams 1 final.10/10 rec.
A talented teacher, very knowledgable, makes the material easy to understand and interesting to follow. One of my favorites. Tests are not hard at all. Do not pay attention to negative comments I bet they do not want to put in some effort. Can't wait to start bio107 with him this summer !
Took cell bio with a different professor (Kay-nishiyama) prior to taking Odom, I would say Odoms tests were slightly harder but the in class experience is a lot better. He talks a lot but its easy to follow along & he also posts all his lectures. Quizzes help prepare you for what the exams will be like (types of questions, difficulty etc)
Professor Odom is wonderful. He is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he enjoys teaching. He invests a lot of extra time into his students' success. The problem-solving sessions during the weekends were very helpful. His lectures are organized and clear. The material isn't easy, so you'd have to work hard for a good grade.
Took him for summer. His exams are way harder than the actual materials' own "homework" and reading questions. He's very helpful, but for people who aren't in a science major and are required to take this class, don't take this in summer. It's too cramped to really absorb it, and the tests are more of you have to know it and now APPLY it.
I took had Odom over the summer for bio107. This class was really tough, but that solely comes from the fact that there is just a lot of material to learn. Odom does his best to really go into every detail, he really doesn't leave anything out. He is also so caring for his students. He had study groups whenever. he's good at explaining one on one.
Very knowledgeable his lectures are very clear he makes the complicated concepts very simple and easy to grasp. Took him in summer as well and the class was great. I enjoy his classes a lot.
ODOM IS BAE! I took 3 courses w/ him & his classes are just great! His classes are tough & do involve lots of studying but he is so supportive in the success of his students. He comes on the weekend to help students and answer questions, always give objectives (make sure to know these) and lets you know what he expects. NO EXCUSE FOR NOT PASSING
Prof. Odom is very knowledgeable about physiology. His class is very hard due to the heavy content but you can pass if you study REALLY HARD. He does not provide study guides but his objectives and key terms suffice. The exams are the extremely tough but you really learn a lot from his class if you put in the effort. The online work boosts grades.
Really great professor. I took him for genetics and he really explained the subject very clearly and he gives you heads up on whats going to be on the exams so usually you know what to expect. He really tries to help by doing study sessions over the weekends to go over homework.
His first time teaching this class. But wow his exams were insane. The final exam average was a 60%. Be prepare to study 70 slides for each chapter. He is absolutely insane. Too much info thrown at you in such little time. Each exam consisted of so WAY too much info. He is willing to help outside of class but his exams are INSANE.
Love Dr. Odom! He really gives you the tools needed to not only to pass the class, but to get an A! Genetics is a difficult subject, and it is fast paced. Dr. Odom invests a lot of time in his students by doing study sessions over the weekend and he always gives you huge hints on what is going to be on the exam. His exams are fair, but can be long.
Best teacher ever, you'll learn so much. Yes, exams were very hard b/c there's so much to memorize. If you start studying 2 weeks before test, there's enough time to memorize it all. Not impossible like other ppl say, but it will seem like that if you start studying 2 days before. I got an A with him in genetics too, so its about how much you try.
You can tell that he enjoys this topic and is very passionate about it. He cares for his students to understand the topic. He prepares multiple solving session during the weekend, and numerous office hours. His exams are fair game and when you put the amount of studying into it, it's fairly easy. I strongly recommend him.
The hardest exams and way too much information to memorize for exams
He never got through one full lecture. Not even half a lecture. He expects you to know an insane amount of information. I would study with my sister, who has a masters degree in bio, and she confirmed my thoughts that there is way too much material put on exams. Often times he forgets to reply to emails and is very unaccommodating.
Disclaimer: Genetics is supposed to be hard! Good professor and you can tell he likes the subject he's teaching. He goes on tangents, but you can follow what he's saying. Only complaint is his tests. MC questions are weighted heavily. BUT! If you practice mastering genetics and listen to lecture, you should be golden.
Odom's lectures were difficult to follow, he would stray from our core topics and occasionally talk about things we didn't need to know. His exams determine if you pass or not; since our semester was half online it was difficult to say the least. Make sure to read the book if anything is unclear. Make connections between things and study a lot!!!
Many opportunities for extra credit are provided throughout the semester. Everything that will be on the tests is covered in the lectures. Many of the free response questions on the tests are done previously in class as well. It's genetics so you need to put time in for an A but Dr. Odom clearly has a lot of experience in the field and it helps.
He's an expert on what hes teaching and if you study correctly and thoroughly, youll be able to understand what he teaches. Hes old so hes not all there many times but hes always glad to help his students. His exams are hard but if you cant handle this class how will you handle other upper division classes?
Not the biggest fan of the way he explained things, but hes a nice guy and the class is still doable. Put your mind to it, study, take his class seriously, and you have a good chance of getting an A. Dont let the set up and circumstances of this pandemic learning environment hinder your performance either. You got this!
I did not like him I use to think he is unfair, but now that I am passing my core higher division classes I see its because of him, so I thought the least I can do is come back and leave this comment. He knows how to present the material, so if you want to do well in your 300-400 classes pick him.
I took him during the pandemic and I do not recommend this professor. He is not at all caring for students . Exams were the toughest part. I studied very hard for all exams and still managed to get a low grade for all. During exams he does not allow us to go back to double check our answers, VERY LONG questions and only 1 hr and 15 min to finish.
Dr. Odom is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable about Biology and will go into details during lectures. He posts his lectures online for students to watch later. You arent required to attend class but you do need to take the exams.
His lectures are very detailed and the slides are helpful. The exams are very long and you cant go back to the previous question, but you can manage it. Went to his office hours and he went through the test and explained everything. You can watch his lectures again when he post it. I would recommend going to his office hours and reading the slides
You can tell he is passionate about biology. At the beginning of lectures he gives key concepts and essential skills that exams are based off. He wants you to APPLY, not just memorize! Take notes during lecture and do all homework. He is always willing to help during office hours too. If you want to learn, take his class!
Dr. Odom loves test crosses. Incorporates them into all of his exams. If your good at looking for patterns, it will help. If not, good luck.
Dr.Odom is a great professor. He wants his students to succeed and will give you the tools you need to do well in the class. You definitely need to give this class your all because it is NOT easy. He is available outside of class and is a very kind person. If you're wiling to work, he's great. But if you're going to be lazy, don't bother.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! if you want to have a professor that does not care about you whatsoever and gives you a quiz every single class day go for it, but if you want to enjoy cell biology DEFINITELY do not take it with ODOM.
Cell bio is a tough course, but he emphasizes the important things that are essential to understanding the subject. Really sweet and caring, answers all the questions respectfully. Knows what he is teaching and if you just pay attention to his lectures and do all in-class assignments, the exams are going to be easy for you. Recommend.
Pay close attention to lectures. Focus on essential skills and key concepts. Visit him during office hours. Struggle through the homework; ask him questions when you get stuck. Challenging material, but you can do well.
Many students did not pass right at the end of the course because full grades are inputed the last week of the semester. There is a quiz every week, if you don't get it 100% correct, you get no credit! He is an interesting lecturer, but presents A LOT of material each class, hard to keep up with. Applies 4 diff q formats in exams, confuses you!
Dr. Odom is fantastic. His class is structured in a way that he practically gives you exam questions as in class assignments. Do well on those in class assignments and you'll do great in the class. He's also very accessible and its obvious he wants his students to succeed if they're willing to put the effort in.
Professor Odom is very knowledgeable and respected and wants his students to be just as knowledgeable. Despite the hard material, I learned a lot. Each exam gets progressively more challenging. Fit as much mastering as you can. Try not to miss class, and understand the in-classes very well. He was always accessible and quick to reply to questions.
The worst professor honestly. He is a nice professor and shows he cares for his job but his teaching is sometimes not understandable. His exams are so difficult and long many people have to stay so much longer after class just to finish.
This class was challenging because the topics are heavy. However, Prof Odom helped me a lot as he was ALWAYS accessible ANY TIME. He cared a lot about his students especially when you show that you try and work hard. Three things to succeed: 1) Go to class 2) Go to office hour 3) and do the online homework mastering then you'll be fine.
3 midterms each one gets longer and final. He gives you inclass assignments he tells when he gives it to you so you guys can show up to class and there are make ups for the inclass since its a pass or fail grade. The exams contain fill in the blank, multiple choice, and free response.
The class is made of 3 exams, in-class assignments and final. He is detailed during lecture. He is accessible during office hours or email if you need help. Doing Mastering helps a lot as well as reviewing his lecture slides. Dr. Odom is great!
He's a kind professor who's always there for students, but his exams are tough; you really need to put in the effort to grasp everything. Sometimes he speeds through lectures, which I found frustrating. You can't rush through material just to check it off during exams! We had 26 lectures/chapters, each with 40-50 slides. Also exam are Cumulative!!
Professor Odom really wants you to do well in the class. You can tell that he cares a lot about his student. He is always available to help you even on the weekend, just send him an email. He's tells you straightforward what he expect you to know. He gives you online assignments to help you understand the topic. Exam are based on lecture.
This class overwhelmed him since it was not his usual course that he teaches. However, he explained the material to the best of his ability during lecture. Exams were based on lecture material. There were 2 exams and a final. He curves each exam and the class over. Definitely recommend taking him, especially for genetics!
He overwhelms students with material & expects you to know everything. Both lectures/tests were heavily worded and difficult to follow. There were 3 tests plus 1 final, each with about 50 questions or more. No study guides were provided. The homework load was heavy & the exams were too demanding. Hardly curves. I do not recommend taking his class.
I took professor Odom for biology in 2019. Note this was a semester where I wanted to quit school because I felt like I wasn't smart enough. When I took his lab for biology. Professor Odom really put in effort in helping each student. He would also give us any opportunity improve our scores or give extra credit.
Many quizzes and some people get more credit with same answers. But if you ask the reason, you will risk to get less credit with same answers till end of the semester.
Prof Odom cares a lot about his students, but his class is demanding. Attend lectures, use the free resources like Mastering and Unstuck study, and you'll do well despite the challenging exams. The workload is heavy, but engaging with the material pays off.
Tests are incredibly hard and 5-8 pages to even more probably. Literally impossible to finish exams on time you have like one question per minute and it's insane considering it's genetics.
Dr.Odom is a good Professor who is very passionate about genetics. His exams are heavy but the in class assignments are helpful with understanding the material & homework covers what is going to be on the Exams. Dr.Odom office hours are very helpful. Regardless of who teaching, this is not an easy course you need to know some math and probability.
Hes a good professor. Explains things well, he can he awkward at times but hes genuine in wanting the best for his students. You have to buy the codeon Hw pathway; exams are long and its test heavy 70%. you have in class work; and then homework.
Been struggling with work and school, Professor really takes time with individuals making sure they know the material, went to tutoring every week multiple times. Took time to help me and we worked on ways I can improve in the class. Class requires effect, direct focus and wise time management. Standard tests. Difficult subject!
bro is great. it's a hard course and he understands that, he wants you to do well and will give you a practice assignment that is almost word for word the quiz/exam. Exams can be a little long bcuz genetics problems take some work, he practically holds your hand as much as he can but you still have to put that work in cuz the material is tough.
The professor is overly picky with wording and offers little useful feedback. Exams get harder without clear guidance. Hurt my GPA. Avoid if possible—class feels more punishing than educational.
He's an overall good prof but his exams are extremely tough and long. He expects specific answers most of the time and the tests get longer throughout the semester. He allows retakes for in classes which is good to boost your grade. Very test/lecture heavy
He's a great professor that didn't bore me too much during his lectures. He explains concepts really well and goes over problems that are found exactly on his exams. He does give out homework, but they help you a lot for exams since they are also exactly the same at times. If you pay attention to lecture and do his problems, you'll be fine.
I genuinely think Prof. Odom is one of the best bio teachers you can have. He's incredibly well educated on the topics and truly cares about your success. He's always there if you need to reach out to him for anything and is very lenient with second chances. 1000000% recommend.
