Great class and great professor. Once I realized this was about international security. Dr. O clearly knows his stuff. Tons of reading but I learned more here than in other classes... Highly recommend him.
Good class. Would take again. I didn't know anything about security before this class... take it. Prof spent lot of time outside of class helping me line up internship.
Best professor I had in my 20 years of education. I learned @ business, ethics, leadership and how to network. Real world stuff. Wish I could have taken more iwth him.
Great class. Professor really cares about his students. Take him.
Excellent teacher and mentor. Interesting perspective with real world experience. Looking forward to next class. Would recommend anything he teaches. Ask for Coast Guard stories... trust me...
Great guy and a great teacher. Extremely helpful, makes class very interesting. You have a ton of reading but if you can take him he will change your view on international business.
I took this professor because I heard he was good, only to find out that he was culturally insensitive and had an ego that far surpassed his knowledge base. He knows a lot about management, but very little about international affairs and cultural nuances, the parts of business that matter. His class was far from stimulating. Take McDermott.
I really enjoyed going to this class. Professor Ostergaard was very passionate about the subject. He kept his lectures interesting which kept my attention. Students were engaged and liked talking. Prof O always had office hours and was willing to meet with you. Every day you have a reading assignment and you discuss it in class. Relatively easy.
Great professor. You learn a new way to think which seems intimidating, but prof O makes it effortless. Highly recommended. Not only an extremely intelligent professor, but one of the most helpful people in the Moore School.
Horrible professor. Repeats topics, but no command of knowledge when pressed. Passionate about topics not related to class, and course topics suffer. Also, culturally unaware, a big problem for business these days. WILL EVER RECCOMEND TO THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN
Single best professor and teacher I ever had. Expert on global business and trade. Tough grader who demands a lot from his students. Humble, personable and really cares about his students. I will take EVERY class this man offers in the future. Challenges the way you look at the world which I guess makes some people uncomfortable. A++
Best professor at USC. Pushes us to throw away our preconceptions of the world and to really think about what kind of business person we will be. one of a kind class. DON'T MISS IT. Even shared his personal mobile number to be sure we could reach him anytime. Be forewarned though... NOT for someone who expects an easy "A"... you must earn it.
BIG recommendation for Dr. O. He is the man! Does not spoon feed you but instead makes you really define your own place in the world of international biz. This professor is EXACTLY why I became a USC IB student in the first place. He has worked all over the world and bring that real life to the classroom. Funny but down to earth. Really cares.
Professor Ostergaard is the reason we have the #1 International Business program. Really forces you to think globally and examine the business world differently. Will take every class he teaches at the Moore School. Not an easy class by any means, but if you put the work in you'll get a lot out of it.
Great class and professor. Tough grader. Expects a lot. Only class I ever looked forward to every week. Will definitely take his leadership class next year.
Great teacher!
Hands down best professor I have ever had. He was always willing to help when I had questions. He made it very clear what he expects and wants from you. He also has good lectures. In-class exams required more preparation than I gave them...
My first expeirience with american professor and he was very good. Took lots of time outside class to help me understand material. Showed real interest in our program and how to make it better experience for all. Would recommend taking him again.
I took Prof O a couple years ago when he taught an International Trade class. I find myself referring to the life lessons he taught me time and again. Don't think I appreciated it at the time but now I sure do! He genuninely cares about his students. Thanks Prof O if you ever read this.
Finishing up a semester abroad and I am reminded every day of little things Ostergard taught us in class. I skyped him twice from Europe and both times he was happy to talk with me about my experience. Hope to take something again from him in the fall! Thanks Dr. O.
Good prof.
Demanding grader. 1st B in my life. Expected us to act like professionals. Busy guy who also runs Masters' Program but who alwyas found time for his students... do the reading, pay attention, take notes... y ou'll be fine... just don't show up late. :)
This man is no ordinary professor... had us all over to his house for dinner... I mean ALL of us... 50+ students... plus teaches like a champ, tells great stories AND spends a LOT of time outside class working with me to figure out what I want to do with my life. A+ Hope he is teaching something when I get back from study abroad. TY Mr O.
Learned more from this teacher than anyone I ever had. Tough grader though and exams were tough. Too much reading. Even then, he was fair and he clearly cares about each individual student. Would take again.
sitting @ home & finally catching my breath from this semester i m probably only now realizing everything i learned in 310. crazy 2 say but prof O helped me organize my thoughts & what i m 2 do with my life. both a mentor & a prof. dont be fooled by tough man exterior. he has a heart of gold... ty.
He's one of the professors I genuinely disliked at USC. Grades are not reasonable at all and tests are BS. Avoid him if you can but I do believe the class is appointed to many.
Single best teacher/professor in my life. Hands down. Don't get me wrong... he's a tough grader... some don't like that nor does he spoon feed you everything... No. He treated us like adults and really, my life was changed for the better thanks to Prof O's class!
Prof. O is without a doubt, the best professor I've ever had. Though he has every reason to be condescending, he's the most approachable guy, super cool to talk with (ask to hear sea stories), and crazy insightful. He's the reason we have the best IB program in the world, and I can honestly say his class irrevocably changed my life for the better.
Hands down best teacher i ever had. Period.
Studying abroad having had him last fall in 310. I use stuff from his class all the time. I didn't realize how much i learned during the stock market game then but now I can sound credible when I talk about the market in class. Which I do a lot. Soooo glad I took him. Will take something from him again in the fall. Gracias!
Prof. O is an inspirational instructor. His teaching methods seem obtuse at times, but his dedication and passion win you over – without question. He challenged me to take life by the horns but never to forget the value of people in the process. Beyond the classroom, he is a leader and a role model. Absolutely adored this class – no higher reccom.
Ostergaard is a teacher. A mentor. A coach. A cheerleader. A drill instructor. The boss. He is tough, demanding and sometimes goes off on sea stories (which I highly recommend by the way)... he treated us like adults. I should have put in more time but wish my grade had been higher. He exactly the type of prof I envisioned in a #1 program.
Ostergaard is in a league of his own when it comes to teaching. His lectures spark meaningful debates . He is more than helpful. He demands that you to give your best work and he gives his best in return. I highly recommend being prepared. Participation is key. He is a great resource for anyone with a desire to succeed. Highly recommend to all.
One-of-a-kind professor. Demanding & tough but sincere & genuinely concerned in my education. Introduced me to potential employer when I told him I was having trouble finding a job. Goes out of his way to put focus on students as individuals. Changed the way I think about the world and for that I am thankful. Hopefully I can take him again.
Let's see... Taught me I.B.? Check. How to network? Check. Rewrote my resume? Check. Brought class on a roller coaster of emotion as we dealt with real world issues? Check. Changed the way I view the world? Check. Change the way I view myself? Check. Learned I am not a muggle? Check. Where do I sign up for his next one? lol... amazing
Professor Ostergaard is the best professor for IB. He's the most knowledgeable and accomplished person ever.
Best prof I ever had. I thought undergrad was an extension of high school until 310. I'll be honest, I was unprepared for the level of expectation ostergaard had for us. I felt intimidated and pushed beyond my limit but I realize now that I emerged stronger for it. First B ever but I would do it again. NOt about the grade... about the learning.
Studying abroad now but had Ostergard last fall. Hated class while i was in but so thankful now that i stuck with it. He challenged me to a higher plain that ever before. He set a high bar for us to acheive and though daunting at times, I did it. Never been more proud of my effort, learned so much, and struggled with complex issues. Love him.
What an inspirational professor. We had some very good debates and he even had us all over at his house for a Christmas party. The class has prepared me extremelly well for classes in Switzerland. His dedication to his students is unmatched by anyone. His Chinese slave ship story had me on the edge of my seat
Great professor. Finishing up my study abroad this summer and so happy I took his class last fall. I became a main contributor in several classes while abroad because he had prepared us while I was still at USC. Hope he teaches something else so I can take him again. Thanks Prof O for being a teacher and mentor!! U are the reason USC IB is #1!
Thought I would take a moment and throw my opinion in. Had Prof O last year. He went out of his way to help us outside of class. Helped me find an internship overseas and even hosted us at his house for BBQ when we returned from study abroad. Toughest class I ever loved. Is globalisation a good thing? lol... better have an opinion...
One of the most influential and inspirational people I have ever met. He is a genius and makes you challenge everything you previously thought. This course is ridiculously hard but if you're willing to put in the work, it is SO worth it. Go to office hours a lot, participate, and study for the exams like 2 + weeks ahead.
When is this guy running for President? Seriously. Brilliant man with a depth of knowledge about international business and the world at large. Probably the best class I have taken in my life. Lost my 4.0 GPA but worth it. I feel like it will take years to really understand all the lessons from the last couple months. Thank you, Doc O.
Easily one of the most influential teachers in all my education. Ostergard pushed us to dig deep. We did. Ton of work but already I see benefit. Not a class for tourists. You gotta get real. Fast. he kept saying, master the readings, now I understand what that means. Prayed he wouldn't call on me but so glad I took him. Don't miss this.
Daniel is a dedicated, insightful professor who assigns a lot of reading and useful project. Written exams and papers are not that bad. He wants students to succeed. He asks challenging questions of interruptions in our presentation. I am not going to forget his career advice and words of thoughts in class.
Missed Ostergard in 310 but knew i had to see what the fuss was about when this class was offered. So glad i did! No doubt the best prof i had in 4 years of college. He set high standards and graded us ridiculously tough... but it was the grade i deserved. Made me realize its about education, not chasing academics. Amazing man. Take him.
Took Ostergaard 4 years ago for 310. Here I am 4 years later online looking him up for career advice. That tells you something. His commitment to his students extends well past graduation. He helped me find my 1st job and now I am going to speak with him about the 2nd. Why? Becasue no one has had a greater influence on my professional life.
Doc O is my hero. Hard class. Sets VERY high expectations. But in a #1 program they should be high. He goes out of his way to treat every student with dignity and puts in hours and hours after class to help with career guidance, etc. Do ALL the readings and you will survive. Learning more than you thought you could. Go to his office hours.
Course that's full of quality information if you take advantage of it. Professor is very polarizing but challenges you to confront key issues that you will deal with in international business. Don't take this course for the grade, take it because you want to change the way you think. Talk to others that took this course before you, it helps a lot.
First B in 7 years of school. Should be angry but I am not. Slowly realizing the amount of stuff I learned and the profs level of commitment to his students. Says he is availabke anytime and he was. Feeling much more prepared to go abroad for the next 6 months thanks to Dr. O. When he says master the readings, he means it. Would take again.
He is a fantastic professor. The class was ridiculously difficult but it challenges your viewpoint and your thought process. The course is set to be a precursor to other courses and it really gets you a basic understanding of the topics at hand.
Ostergaard is easily the best professor I've had in college. He tries to make you think about global issues from every perspective and see things in a way you wouldn't have thought to before. Super tough, super rewarding. Would definitely take again
Good lord. The end of this roller coaster is in sight. Never have I put so much time and energy into a class but never have I learned so much. Ostergaard sets VERY high expectations expecting us to "master" the readings before class. He is serious. However, he gives 110% in return. Tough class. Great Prof. I will take anything he teaches.
You do most of the learning on your own. You go to class mostly to formulate and defend your perspective. You learn a lot of stuff and Dr. Ostergaard does beyond the necessary as a professor. Realistically the course is just readings and discussion which isnt really extraordinary in itself. Youre there mostly for the connections.
If you dont take Ostergaard for IBUS 310 you are making a mistake. Worth all the work that goes in. Easily took 2-3 hours of hw a night but worth it. You read 2 full textbooks front to back + more. Stock Market Challenge as quiz grades (not easy but not a big part of your grade). Networking and connections he gives makes it totally worth it.
nice guy. great sea stories. expects more than any teacher I ever had but worth it in the end. TON of reading. took 2 classes with Dr. O and wish I had taken more. goes out of his way to help place people in internships. real world experience from around the world which he brings into classroom. take him.
Class is a ton of work and it will stress you out every night but you get a lot out of this class. I hear spicer's class is much easier so if you want an easy A take Spicer but you really are missing out because Ostergaard teaches you so much more and puts in 110% effort and really cares about your well being. You are better prepared for future
This is the hardest class I have ever taken at USC and I love it. You will get horrible grades, fail the midterm--but it is totally worth it when compared to other professors. You learn so much about yourself and your fellow classmates. Honestly, would take again just for the camaraderie and the education I received.
First time leaving feedback. Felt I owed it to the single greatest teacher I ever had. Initially shocked by the level of reading and his expectations for our performance. However, as semester went on, we came together as a class and raised the bar even higher. I am better for it. Hope to take him again after returning from abroad.
He will challenge your worldview to prepare you for the real world, because the right answers aren't always apparent nor are they usually sought by others. You will grow not only as a student but as a person in any of his courses. He says at the start of the semester you get out what you put in; for me personally this proved true. Would take again!
Best professor at USC. Very impressive guy who you can learn a lot from. If an easy A is something you're looking for, do not take this class. If learning and becoming a better student and person is more important to you, Dr. O is for you. There's a reason our IB is the #1 program in the world. Do yourself a favor and take him.
This guy is a legend. Never have I met a professor who cares so much about his students. This man will go to hell and back for them. The class being tough is a small price to pay to have a professor who is so fully dedicated to the success of his students.
Seriously the best professor I have ever taken. The class is definitely difficult and requires you to fullly understand and apply the readings during class. However, this class will stretch your brain and truly open your mind. Dr. O is so awesome! He has always been willing to call, email, or meet in person to discuss any worries or questions.
I did it. I successfully completed 310 with Dr O. This is no small feat! First class where I was really challenged and pushed way outside my comfort zone in terms of expectations. Feels like I just learned what being a student really means. Dr O is a legend. He taught every class in person (despite Covid) because he is Dr. O after all!
If you want to actually learn while in college take this class. If all you care about is your GPA don't take this class.
Finishing my 2nd class with Dr O. I can honestly say he challenged me. More than an all my years of education. But, I volunteered for this 2nd class after taking 310. Learned more from him in the last year than my first 3 years combined. Don't miss this legend. Be prepared, for real. Its not about the grade its about the education. I hope.
He is by far the best professor I have ever had. The class is a lot of work but so interesting so it is worth it. Extremely knowledgeable about the field and has the coolest stories he tells in class. Best class
Youll bond over the shared trauma that is this class. Yes, and Id gladly do it again.
Dr O will push you more than you have ever been pushed before, but you grow so much. There is an insane amount of reading but they are interesting and high quality. This is NOT a class to slack off in, if you wont be prepared every day, forget it. Dr O is so kind to students and cares about their careers, but you need to know what you think.
This course is different than any other course I have taken. Challenged us to think critically and increased my understanding of things I thought I knew but now realize I had no idea. Dr. Ostergaard really cares more about students than anyone I have met. He pushes us to grow, to network and to not accept the status quo. Hard but so worth it.
This class is not easy but I can confidently say that it was the most impactful class I have taken at the University. Yes, the class is hard and there is a lot of reading, but it is all worth it. DO NOT let the work deter you from taking the class because otherwise, you are missing out.
If you have the chance, take Dr. O. He's an excellent teacher and will do anything for his students. The class really isn't that hard. If you can contribute something to the conversation, you don't really need to read. Grades on pop quizzes and exams don't really matter- if you are a participating member of the class, you'll pass.
Professor Ostergaard was the best professor I have ever taken at UofSC. The class is difficult but worth it. He has completely changed my perspective on what my future holds. He has an incredible resume and wants to help his students succeed outside of the classroom. He is truly a professor I will stay in contact with for the rest of my life.
433 changed my life. He changed how I look at the world, how I think about global issues, how international relations impacts international business... it helped me define my role. It really made me reprioritize what I want in a career. All thanks to the amazing Dr O. He should be required for every student in IB. Just don't mention the U.N.
Dr. Ostergaard is hands down the best professor I have ever taken in college. He teaches IBUS310 in such an engaging and entertaining manner while holding students to the highest level. It was the most difficult and challenging course I have taken so far and I would take it all over again if I could. Do the readings and show effort and you're good.
Best class I have ever taken. Dr. O is a simple cattle farmer who has fought pirates at sea, negotiated biz deals around the world and has walked the inner halls of D.C. He sets the bar high and then inspires the class to set it higher. His standard for excellence is the reason this program is #1 year after year. A legend.
It's not as hard as people make it out to be. Worth taking
Dr. O is the best professor I have had at DMSB and is the reason IB is #1 at USC. He is a legendary professor who truly cares about his students and their success. His real world experience is incredible. Cannot recommend the course or Dr. O highly enough. Do the readings and put work into the class-- you will get so much out of it.
This class makes a college degree worth it. Dr. O is unlike any professor I have ever had in the best way possible. Don't let the work scare you, I promise you it's worth it. Be ready to share your thoughts. He is the reason this program is so prestigious and I feel so grateful to have learned from someone as credible and knowledgable as Dr. O.
I purposefully took 433 because I wanted to see for myself what Dr O was all about. He was all that and more. He pushed us hard. I learned more about myself then in the last 3+ years of college. Bonus is the low country boil & smoked brisket. Do his IB camping trips, movie nights, etc... and don't let academics in the way of your education.
If I could recommend one thing for an IB student at USC to do, it would be to take 310 with Dr. O. If you are willing to put in the work and focus on your overall education rather than academics alone, then this is the place for you. I have nothing but good things to say about the friendships and knowledge I gained over the course of the semester.
310 with Dr O: me - oh wow, there is a world out there. Then 433 with Dr O: me - ahhh I start to understand the world out there. He teaches how to think not what to think. Helped me get an internship abroad then a job. Can't say enough. He should be required for everyone in the major. He has very high expectations but he delivers on his end.
Realest prof out there I almost didnt take him and I am so glad I did. He puts up a front that hes a mean dude but hes really not. He has taught me the most out of any professor here at UofSC, and I am sad I have to wait to take him again. The class is hard but not crazy hard, just a lot of material and a lot of unanswered ?'s as you learn so much!
Dr. O is one of those professors they make movies about. He is so knowledgeable and experienced and he pushes his students in the best ways. Idk how many times I've left his class thinking "That was awesome." Nevermind the friendship and community that comes out of the class too. Please take Dr. O, there's no one like him.
Unlike any professor you have taken, dont be scared, just do it. hardest class ever but worth it-you will learn and be transformed like never before. You're taught a new perspective on life, not just business, and come out of the class witha community of friends. Wish there was unlimited character count of ratings, i have too much to say about dr o
Dr. O = IB legend! Scared on day one but i wanted the challenge. I think Dr. O has done everything and it shows. He challenged me to be a better leader and my life is better having taken him. Can't wait for 433! There is good reason for his cult-like following of IB students... he is all that and more. "What am I willing to do for money?!"
The first class I took at DMSB that felt like a real college class, it will encourage you to see multiple different ways of viewing business strategies and past events. It made me question almost everything I thought I knew about myself and what I wanted in the future. He does expect a lot of work on your part so only take if willing to work.
You will reach the end of this class a different person. Looking back at all your hard work and new friendships, you will realize you were always more than capable. Truly a transformative experience. This class will make you want to aim high and work hard. If you think you're smart but you're worried about workload, you're perfect for this class.
As an IB senior, Dr O remains the single biggest (positive!) influence in my life outside my own family. He always had time to discuss careers, resume, the IB major, life... never met a more caring prof. I adore this man and while he seems scary, he is genuine. Dr. O is the reason we are #1 year after year. Just don't be an indolent miscreant.
Dr. Ostergaard is a transformative professor. You would miss out greatly by not taking this class as an RMI major. Requires a substantial time commitment but I cannot begin to describe how worth it this class is. Insanely challenging and epic group project. Type of professor you tell your grandchildren about one day
This guy is the real deal; the other reviews on here are accurate. Busy class but super rewarding at the end. Dr. O structures the class so that by the end you know everyone well (also like 1/3 of the class was international students). There are very few professors like him out there. You will remember the class for many years. Highly recommend
If you want to grow as a student and as a person, take this class. Dr. O expects a lot, but you're better off because of it. If you don't think you can commit to full effort, you're cheating yourself. This is a self-selecting group, so only take the course if you're ready to work hard, learn a lot, and make great friends along the way.
Absolute must-take. Don't leave RMI without taking this class. Really opened my eyes to possible career paths I didn't know existed. He is the GOAT in the classroom. Tough but fair. Dont take if you want the easy way out but if you are willing to work (seriously harder than any class before), you come out with a life changing education.
