Ostrov is awesome. He loves the subject, and makes it way fun, but 22 is hard. Very accessible in office hours. 1 MT, 2 subMTs, 1 final roughly equivalent to the MT.
Hard subject and made harder.
Hilarious! I loved coming to class, even though i could barely comprehend the subject!
He tries to make class funny, but his humor got old fast. The tests are difficult and don't necessarily pertain to what we learned in class.
He's good. I would take any class he teaches.
He's a really good teacher. He won't move on with the lesson unless the whole class agrees that everything is perfectly clear. I'm just not that good in Math. Ostrov was really really fun though.
I didn't do well, but it wasn't his fault at all. He's a great proff. and he really tries to make sure everyone understands. take him, just make sure you ask a lot of questions. He will always be willing to help.
awsome teacher. very clear. midterms are straightforeward
Too hard! I knew the material, but felt like an idiot when taking his tests. He makes it his mission to be sure absolutely no one feels smart after taking his class. He tries to trick you on tests, and he never puts straight forward problems on them. I got an A-, yet I still felt stupid when taking his exams. That's not right.
Professor Ostrov is one of the best math teachers that ive ever had the pleasure of learning under
THE best teacher I have ever had. He explains everything clearly and does not move on until you get it. He has office hours almost every day and answers questions thoroughly, sometimes re-teaching an entire lesson. The tests are hard but curved accordingly so those who truly understand the material will stand out. Very fun for true math lovers.
He is an awesome guy and the homework is easy. You go into the classes feeling completely confident and come back out with a horrid grade. Yes, it's curved, but how is a 13/21 an "A"? If you want to feel bad about yourself, have fun with Ostrov!
If you actually know what you're doing the tests are well within reason, if you do bad, usually everyone else does too. If you do very poorly its probably your fault. The best part by far is that going to class is actually enjoyable, and if you go to class, you should do OK.
Excellent teacher, excellent sense of humor, really really good looking, I mean, he is down right sexy
hawt.
Fun class and great eye candy! ;)
Give this man chile peppers!
Even if he does hate your guts for sucking at math, at least he is good looking. I mean, really, the eye candy giving the lecture was motivation enough for me to stop sucking at math.
I came from Yale to take this man's oh-so-sexy class. Ostrov sits far in the first quadrant of the hilarity-attractiveness axis. The class also happens to be excellent.
Professor Ostrov is almost as beautiful as the subject he teaches.
Excellent professor. Interesting topic. Good class
This guy could teach at Princeton. Explains like a god. Office hours are great, and he doesn't baby you. He doesn't just reiterate HW problems on the tests, so you'll need you UNDERSTAND the CONCEPTS to do well. Best. Professor. EVAR.
Clear, available, and wacky! Ostrov is the man! His lectures are very clear and you can read your class notes like a story. He is hilarious! I always told myself in class, "Thank God he's so entertaining or else I'd be bored out of my mind". He makes calculus more bearable. The workload is a little tough but not unreasonable.
He is a really great teacher, he explains everything very clearly and is extremely helpful if you have questions. The submidterms are really hard, but if you keep up with the hw and go to office hours when you're confused it's a very manageable class.
People don't take Ostrov's class for the subject, they take it for his various physical attributes. Just kidding...
Awesome Prof. Really helpful in office hours. BUT BEWARE! He is not easy!! Make sure you know your stuff conceptually.
He is awesome! He challenges students but is also very helpful for anyone. His tests are hard but means his curves are very generous.
Explains everything very clearly and is helpful and available to students. Very entertaining, the class had a light mood. Hard tests, and moves quickly through material.
It is an honor to be taught by a man so dedicated to his craft. He's the reason I'm a math major. Immensely difficult tests. Twice as rewarding. Truly an opportunity to prove to yourself that with enough effort you can overcome your weaknesses in life. An idea of how difficult his tests are: 21/40 = A. 10/40 = B.
Honestly, I picked his class because of the good ratings from this site. But I was truly disappointed. He is the only professor that I really didn't like since I attended SCU. Exams are much harder compare to the lectures, that he has to curve grades for everyone. I'd rather get the grade that I actually got and know what the stuff I learned
Ostrov is hands down the best teacher i have ever had. I had him the entire 122 123 series and I now as a math major choose my classes by if he is teaching them or not. His tests are impossibly hard, like the hardest things I have ever taken hard. But he is the best teacher. He is so funny, I always enjoy going to class, going to office hours.
I had him for Math 13, and I thought he always did a very good job of explaining everything. Also was very funny in class and made a very light mood. Always willing to help. Yes, his tests are had, but there is always a generous curve, so don't let that deter you. If you want to learn the material and be very well off for later classes, take him.
He moves through material very quickly and has difficult tests but does a very good job of explaining difficult concepts and responding to student needs. Office hours are very helpful. Although he is challenging, he's also very nice and considerate and always makes class fun. I would highly recommend him to anyone up for a challenge.
This guy is the best math teacher I've had. Very knowledgable and makes it fun. Tests are hard but he is fair and really nice with partial credit.
He is my favorite teacher here on campus!!! He is willing to work with you at any time. I went to his office outside of office hours several times! Really funny, just go to his office and bs with him. He has a lot of funny things in his room. Take him if you have to take math 11!!
Great teacher. His tests are hard, but then again, they are all curved anyways. If you have to build off of the a class, take it from him. If its your last class in the sequence, I'd find someone else.
My favorite math teacher. He is extremely difficult, but is very rewarding. Tests are meant to challenge the students and encourage us to use critical thinking. There is never a stupid question in the class. I ask basic stuff and he still has the patience to explain to me.
Listen guys, Im an engineer that dropped this class recently. While Math 14 is difficult, his tests in my opinion are stupidly difficult. The final question is always ridiculously hard and not many people get any credit at all on it. If you want to really learn the material, and I mean REALLY, then you can take him. But other than that, stay away.
Worth your time! Superb prof with very clear lectures with very challenging midterms. Really makes sure you understand the material. If you're interested in math and want a challenge, definitely recommend this prof
More concerned than you can apply what you learn than memorizing things you'll forget after a midterm. Very lively and funny in class.
This class was the hardest for me. I don't really like math and I thought the lectures were ok, but the tests are crazy hard and most people who took AP Calc in high school didn't know how to do alot of it. I suggest taking this class only if you like math, since he likes challenging you conceptually, the tests are not straightforward at all.
Professor Ostrov is the best professor I've had at SCU. His notes are easy to follow and extremely helpful.
Great prof, I would definitely recommend this prof for any math class you want to take.
Love the sound of his voice. Take his class!
pretty frikin hard. definitely learn a lot though! cool diverse class
pretty frikin hard. definitely learn a lot though! cool diverse class!
I LOVED how neat and organized Ostrov was with his lectures. Like someone else said, you really can read his notes like a story. He did go through a lot of concepts super fast (so it's easy to get lost) but he pauses several times as you're writing notes to make sure you're caught up with what he's saying. Tests are tough but curved.
Ostrov is a good guy and a very relaxed man. However, it was hard for me to follow his lectures. Even though I have a pretty strong background, I was often lost in the middle of his explanation. You have to follow every word and if you do not pay a little attention, then you can be completely lost. Read books before class to not feel lost.
His lectures are very organized and easy to follow. If you do the homework the day that he assigns it (as he recommends) it's not bad at all, although there is an assignment after almost every class.
Honestly a cool guy. I learned a lot in this class without a doubt, but sadly I had to drop the class due to the fact that his Tests were too damn hard; but in all fairness I am a horrible test taker. I got around 25% on the first midterm and it curved to a C, just so you have an idea of how hard the tests can be. gives very little partial credit
Ostrov is a great lecturer and really knows how to structure an effective class. He treats his students like adults and has no silly rules about cell phone use or mandatory attendance. Just beware of his examsthey are intensely difficult. The first midterm's curve was so high that a 40% was equivalent to a B.
He is a funny lecturer but his tests are almost IMPOSSIBLE! 1/2 the class got under 30%. You have to know ALL the material like the back of your hand to get an A. He barely gives homework, but if I could go back I would take a different professor. I put in so much effort studying for exams and still only got a C/B most of the time. Not worth it.
GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is so extremely helpful at office hours when you're confused about parts of the lecture and homework problems. He's funny and is genuinely enthusiastic teaching the class. He definitely cares about his students. The only tough thing is that he grades really hard and doesn't give much partial credit so grind for each test.
As others have mentioned, his tests are very difficult because they actually test your understanding. If you're used to memorizing formulas and seeing homework problems on the test, I would suggest a different professor. That being said, if you have a genuine interest in math, you will leave his class with a fundamental understanding of calculus.
Ostrov is the man. But his tests are extremely difficult (curved a bunch). Use Ed Schaffer practice problems online. If you're not an elite math student, you prob won't get an A. Teaching concepts super well and is an entertaining lecturer. Utilize office hours, not essential but helps. Would take again if I was smart enough to get a good grade (:
He will rip the heart out of you as he had for me. I took Math 13, and took him again for Math 14 to get my heart back. I left brainless. Why has God forsaken me yet again?
best professor I had so far at SCU, really challenge you to think about the materials, homework can be long, exam is rough, but it is definitely workable if you go to office hours for help. Would 100% recommend if you are pursuing a stem degree, he really sets the foundation strong
Great professor, great lecture. Make sure you take notes in his class. Tests are hard, but as long as you review the notes you'll be fine.
Ostrov tests people to see if they can apply concepts to new cases, so make sure u take the class and hw seriously. After all, what matters the most isnt the number of problems, but rather the understanding of concepts. He structures and teaches the class well, and curves tests fairly. It will be a great investment any of his classes, like 125!
I was hesitant at first but Ostrov proved to be a wonderful and funny teacher. He really wants to make sure his students actually learn the material instead of just pure memorization, and was really helpful during office hours. On top of that he also cracks jokes in class and is overall a hilarious professor. Wish I had taken Math 13 with him too!
Way too hard!! Half the class failed his first exam. A bunch of students dropped. Take anyone else if you want to get a fair grade. I thought he was a good teacher, but a good teacher doesn't fail half their class. Super unfair that his class is so much harder than every other Math 13 class.
I dropped this class because I failed the first exam....
Doesn't test on what he teaches. Makes it his mission to fail as many students as possible. Horrible!!
Dont take him if you care about your grade
Hardest professor in the math department. Don't take him unless you are a math genius. His tests are impossible. I'm good at math, but his class was demoralizing.
Gives you three test in one quarter and that it your whole grade and makes them extremely hard. I got a 7/25 on the first one and it rounded to a B+ but got a 14/25 on the next one and rounded to a C+. so unpredictable you will learn but its so frustrating when you understand all the material but the teacher makes the test so hard
Ostrov works hard to keep students engaged and his lectures are funny and entertaining. Homework load is comparable to other UD math classes at SCU. His tests are SO HARD, but curved just as much. Taking them is a real blow to moral, but you will probably get curved up a ton and be alright. Definitely challenging class though.
This class was rough but hes good at teaching.
Good teacher, but he doesn't test on the information he reviews in class. He also will not bump your grade up even a tenth of a percent at the end of the quarter. What you get you get, so expect no sympathy from him even if it means you might not graduate on time.
Ostrov is one of the best professor with exceptional lecture. However, there is a catch: If you just want to get though it rather than having an understanding of the material, don't take him. He will go hardcore and take you into the funs of rediscovering everything (if that is fun to you, take him), and he will fail you without hesitation.
Don't expect to memorize a sheet of formulas and do well in this class. Rather than just telling you what you need to know, he focuses on building up your intuition for the concepts. Tests can be very hard but are curved.
Worst professor ever. Took 10 hours to finish the homework if you didnt copy answers each week. You still have to read textbooks after you listen to his class. His class drop 2/3 of people because of his test average is 50% Trash teacher and stupid grader. Even you are c minus, he will not round your grade and give you NP in this class.
Took Professor Ostrov for MATH 13 and 14, I cannot recommend him highly enough. All of his lectures are very clear, and he is more than willing to answer any questions students have either during class or at office hours. His tests are hard (mean is usually around 50%), but he curves them accordingly.
Ostrov was easily the best math professor I have encountered at SCU, and I'm disappointed I won't be able to have him in the future. He's enthusiastic about the material he's teaching which makes the class much more enjoyable. He also has very clear lecture notes which makes it easy to follow along. Tests are hard, but his class is well worth it.
Stupid teacher. Followed on stupid rule.
Ostrov does a great job with the layout of his notes. It's easy to go back and look at past notes to understand the material. The exams are a bit tough, however, they are curved. I hope to take more of his courses in the future.
Very good lecturer, gets things clear and fun. Energetic, get the whole class involved and humourous. Enjoyed his lectures. homework before every class, exams are super difficult, not good for mental health but he curves. This guy really teaches. Take if you love math and willing to study. class is really fun I would say, but need to work
His tests were insanely hard to the point where I almost cried, but he curves them a lot! They are made so that you have to have mastered the concepts and understand them completely in order to get the correct answer. His lectures are very organized and easy to follow. I only did well on hw and exams because I went to every single office hour.
Professor Ostrov is one of the best math professors at SCU. His lectures are very clear and he is always willing to take time to explain things. There is daily homework which can occasionally be tedious. The tests are hard but are curved heavily as a result (usually the mean is a 50% but that results in a B-)
Ostrov is a great professor who emphasizes a deep understanding of math but may not suit students who are accustomed to the surface level "plug numbers into equations" approach. The class demands significant effort and it simply wasn't the right fit as I was taught this exact way. Ostrov is a good professor but may not be suitable for every student
the midterm test is very hard. Reviewing homework is useless, because there is no question in test similar to homework.
EXAM IS NOT BASED ON WHAT HE TAUGHT!!!! HALF OF STUDENTS GET F.
The exam is hard and review is useless since homework and notes are not related to the question in the test.
Ostrov is one of the best professors to take if you are actively seeking a greater understanding of the concepts you are learning and have a love for the subject. However, Ostrov is simultaneously one of the worst professors to take if you need to get a good grade in a class. Put simply, take him if you aren't already struggling in terms of grades.
His lectures are good and funny which makes it easy to go to class and yes he does design tests to be hard but he also curves so like even though I probably got like 50-60s range on all my exams because they're designed to be difficult I still ended with a B-.
Taken for optimization (math 146) but that was not listed here. Good professor to take if you want to learn, bad professor to take if you want good grade, really just that simple.
I advise you to not take this class for your own good. His tests are absolutely nothing like his lectures and the homework. Most of the class ends up failing and dropping out. When you ask him how to do better, he just advises everyone who isn't a math whiz to drop. Really discouraging.
You will love him if you are a big fan of math, but (and I cannot stress this enough) you will hate him if you are just trying to get some mandatory math credits out of the way as a comp sci major. I will repeat this for the sake of all future students: DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE A COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENT THAT DOESN'T REALLY CARE ABOUT MATH
I do not recommend taking. While his lectures are good, the tests are unfair and do not reflect the homework at all, so you get no practice thinking the way he wants you to. If you do not understand and especially do not test well on one of his tests, he will not help you to do better but will advise you to drop. Studying is pointless for his tests
Do NOT take. While his lectures are fine, his tests are impossible and studying is pointless. Take another professor, you will have a better time. He does not help you in the ways that he tests, and has an ego about his tests being hard. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Final is 40% of the grade. Tests have nothing to do with lecture content..
It's ridiculous SCU hires teachers and puts them on tenure in the CS department like Daniel Ostrov and Natalie Linnel and others … These teachers boast about how many people fail there class and how difficult there tests are . Horrible environment for anyone that is coming into a class wanting to learn and that's the first thing they hear .
One of the best teachers at teaching I have ever had, dad jokes kept me awake which I have struggled with in past. Test averages were 50% but he curves it. Its good because it makes more potential to do really good compared to rest of class. Perfectly organized notes on board, and also he is really engaging. U can ask questions without being scared
One of the best math professors at actually teaching and explaining the material intuitively in his lectures. Homework can be tedious, and his exams are very difficult. Class average is usually about a 50 for exams, but he heavily curves it. Overall, if you don't mind conceptual math, this class will be difficult, but you'll get through it
very rousing lectures
Got my worst-ever midterm grade in this class. However, Prof. Ostrov is smart, sociable, and funny. His lectures were engaging and explained topics well. Through his help at office hours and proper studying, I was able to recover from my bad midterm grade. The course itself (MATH 123) is practical and a great upper-div elective choice.
Besides his lectures which enables students to think rather than learning/memorizing mechanically, Dr. Ostrov is a very open-minded person and tends to use logic for all questions.
Professor Ostrov is a terrific explainer, and I've left his class feeling like I have a strong grasp of the topics. His class is a lot of work, with homework assigned in almost every class and tests that require a lot of thought to complete. That said, his class never felt unfair or like he was out to get us. Take Professor Ostrov if you can!
Funny, but not helpful. Feedback just repeats the lecture and doesn't clarify anything, so you end up teaching yourself and finding practice on your own. Three midterms, no quizzes, retakes, or extra credit. Expectations are unclear, grades aren't posted, and the grading system is confusing. Easier for the high school AP students, not SCU students.
I love his lecture!! His homework is a bit much but extremely helpful for exam prep. The exams were not easy so really study and practice on your own. Overall, I learned a lot from him. Appreciate it!
Dr. Ostrov is great at teaching, but his midterms make you think at a level you were not trained to think at. He is also very funny and uses his humor to engage you throughout his lectures. He is a good professor for learning but not as good for the grade.
