He was intimidating at first, but it turned out to be easier than i had expected. He was very helpful, easy to talk to, and really knew his stuff.
made the concepts simple

He is intimidating at first, but starts joking around after a while. He actually grades homework on correctness, but the tests are pretty easy. The projects throughout the semester suck. Sometimes his math lingo is hard to understand.
he was always willing to help, the homework assignments were terrible and were graded on correctness, projects weren't much fun, but i learned a lot and i got an A so not too bad.
Dr. O is a really nice guy and is always willing to help with problems. HW is long and hard and graded! but he will do problems that you cant do. You have to participate, go to class and work hard- if so youll do well on tests and get a good grade
He started out with a class of 35 and ended with under 20. Didn't teach anything relevant and when he did hebarely explained it in laymens terms. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He is a very hard grader, he can't stand to not take off points. He offers to help, but isn't too thrilled if you show up. Not recommended.
if you want help come to his office with specific problems after having worked on it yourself, then he's great...if you just go in and say you're confused, he doesn't know what to do
He is a horrible teacher. He doesn't know what he wants to say half the time, and when you ask questions, he can't answer them until he tries to do it himself. He offers to help during office hours, and he does, but it isn't helpful at all when it comes to taking tests.
OTERO SUCKS, worst teacher I have ever had and I still got an A in his class... spare yourselves, lets just say he collects homework like its a qui grade!!
Ok so this is all you need to know he grades homework for correctness which is bull crap. Then I went to get help from him after class next day had a test and still got an F. Trust me avoid this guy at all cost.
He was my first prof at Xavier during summer sexxion. He was just a kid then in 1989. He was very nervous the first day. He really gave his all for the class. Once before the final most students met for a study session and he came on his own time to gi
Grades homework for correctness. Lose 20% of points on hw for not stapling? If you don't define every variable and write out everything that has anything to do with the question then you lose lots of points. He has no idea what is going on in class. His lectures are completely useless. Save time, just read the book.
Do not take him!!!!!! He does not get anything across. Okay so I know I have ADD but he has it worse than I do. If you have no background skill in the class, you will do terrible. His tests aren't too bad but there are only a few problems so if you don't know how to do one you are screwd. Best advice----> Take another teacher!!!!!!
Ok, so we only get thru 1 or 2 problems a class... but he is a great guy and honestly does want to help you. He cares alot about applying the math to real life, which makes everything more interesting.
OK, enough with the Big Boy bashing, Otero smiling kinda looks like this yellow smiley. Give him some credit. # Theory (302) is an EXCELLENT class. Can print out PDF notes before class and add sparse notes as necessary. Go to his office hours. What the hell else are you doing on Friday afternoons? Looks like Wario from Mario Kart 64.
Listen. If you are not willing to work your butt off then don't take Otero. He is an excellent teacher and will help you for hours in his office outside of class to make sure you understand the material. (I think the longest I spent was 4 hours at one time.) Stop complaining if you aren't willing to work...because that's all it takes to do well.
I love Dr. O! take History of calc!
Dr. Otero is an awesome teacher, he's funny and helpful. In class he may not hit the subject matter exactly for use in the homework but if you look through the notes you take and use his office hours he's very helpful.
His class was hard, but very interesting and worth it. I had to study like crazy for his tests, and the homework was difficult, but if you have study parties and go to office hours it's possible, and sometimes even fun. Usually I don't like hard classes, but this was my favorite class of the semester!
i felt that he made the class more boring than it had to be.
To the comment 5 below mine, I worked 12 hours a week on this class, went to office hours at least once a week, and studied my ass off for the tests, and I got a B. Yes, I was a freshman in Linear Algebra, but that is the kind of work that is expected for a 300 level class. Class time was unhelpful. Sorry Dr. Otero, you are a bad teacher.
Homework is only due every friday which=nice. Stupid projects are easy but a waste of time. Material is confusing-not anything like calculus. class is boring and not helpful. doesnt use the book. he's in his own world-doesnt use #'s when explaining things. tests are really hard-know terms. take any other math teacher there is - not recommended.
First off, let me just say that Math 147 was the most difficult class I have EVER taken. As impossible as I found it to understand what Dr. O talked about during class, I found that he was extremely helpful when I set up appointments with him. He even sat with me through all of my homework for his class. Great guy, REALLY hard tests/homework.
A nice guy, but the class is really hard. Expect 5 hours of homework a week plus projects. Only take it if you've taken calc before or if you're good at math.
completely unfair...too much homework and only grades five problems...never there during office hours and the tests are unfair...DROP IMMEDIATLEY
He is a very unfair teacher, who assigns homework over material he hasn't taught yet. He gets very frustrated when students attempt to answer a question in class and are wrong. He not only discourages students from wanting to learn calculus, but further crushes them by constantly supplying them with weekly-graded homework, immense projects, & tests
He was never at his office hours and homework was due before we discussed it. He also hardly ever gave partial credit on tests.
Great guy, but I consider myself pretty good at math and I was completely lost in his class. Would not recommend taking him for Elementary Linear Algebra.
Terrible teacher. Very poor at explaining the subject matter he expects his students to know. I only got a B becasue I had taken the class in highschool. I insist that no one take him.
eww i hate this guy. he is horrible at teaching the material and plays favorites. dont ever take his class. usually x has pretty good teachers he is not an example of that
The worst teacher by far. He cannot communicate very well. He is an unfiar grader. He pulls random problems out the text book, and on top of that gives extra work. He only grades about 4 of the problems of his choice, and they could be your worst problems. DO NOT take his class. Drop it as soon as your grade goes below a B cause it won't go back up
I don't consider myself any good at math, and I did all the homework, went to class, paid attention, and got an easy A. I thought he was a fine teacher, I understood everything.
He's one of the worst professors I've ever had. In stats, he just does a problem and pretty much expects you to understand it. I thought stats would be easier than calculus, but Otero made it 10 times harder than it really is. Seriously, DON'T TAKE OTERO!!!!
Extremely hard teacher. Unless you are a math major or are really good at math, get a tutor or drop the class. His grading on tests are really unfair. Homework problems are harder than the test and take about 2-3 hours.
Otero is a funny guy, but that's about the only good thing I have to say about Math 120. His style of teaching is extremely difficult to follow and if you don't understand the text book, then you won't understand what he's saying either. Do ALL of your homework, and go to the math lab every week... it's the only reason I passed.
Ok, so this professor is not the best but I DONT REGRET TAKING HIM! Some people are just bitter. He tries to help. He held sunday review sessions before every test...just ask!! I got an A b/c of the hw. He gives you two test grades based on it so make sure your answers are correct by going to the math lab or getting a tutor. I would take him again.
Please do not take this professor, he is so helpful when it comes to his office hours but when it comes to the test its impossible. He will pull the most useless and irrelevant things for the tests. Impossible, and I highly suggest to not take him ,and to pick someone else for statistics.
Avoid him, especially if you struggle with math. He takes points off on homework without any explanation, is unapproachable, and generally doesn't seem interested in helping his students learn. Explains things in an extremely complicated way. Consider moving into the math lab, or get a tutor. Without those two things, I'd have failed the course.
His class itself is easy with the class work and tests, but the homework is completely different. He over explains stuff a lot but he really knows his stuff and wants his students to understand.
Do not take this class if you need examples to learn. The worksheets and test are somewhat easy and the way he grades is nice but the book work homework is completely different. He is a very hard grader when it comes to book work and is not very helpful with questions.
very knowledgeable and seems interested in helping students learn, but his explanations are overcomplicated and hard to follow. if you're not already good at/interested in math, this class will be a headache for you. if you are good at math, be prepared to teach yourself most of the lessons as he is not great at explaining things in class
Hated him freshman year. now i have him for a business stat class and he is worse. not helpful and very boring.
Really smart, but he is not good at teaching along side the book. Writes own worksheets and tests, which add to the difficulty of the already difficult subject. Additionally, he is point blank an donk hole. He takes points off for not stapling your paper and once told a student trying to get help, "you are starting to piss me off." Dont Take Him.
This professor does not teach. He puts chapters on the test we haven't talked about and he's rude to students. He is not helpful at office hours and has a tendency to make you feel really stupid. I have two tutors for this class and I'm still doing bad.The amount of homework is ridiculous. This is the worst class I've ever taken at Xavier.
He's a graduate-level professor and has a tough time teaching to undergraduate students and making for an extremely difficult introductory level stats course. He's nice enough and genuinely does want his students to learn. Be prepared if you're in his course.
Does want to help you learn, although I found it easier just to learn from the the textbook. Didn't really care that I didn't pay attention in class and gives you the benefit of the doubt on test answers. Solid professor, you should like him if you are indepedent and good at math.
Don't take this class unless you understand the basics to stats already. He is not very clear with teaching stats and focuses more on using the calculator but does not explain what he is doing. This was really hard. I recommend to going to the math lab if you end up taking this course.
Do not take him. This is the worst math class I have ever taken because of him and I love math. He does not make anything clear and expects us to know everything about excel and stats before we learn it in class. For example - I had a question about homework so I asked him for help and mid question he left and said, "I have to go." And just left.
Go to his office hours and he will be very helpful. He won't answer your questions, he will guide so you can figure out the answer by yourself. Overall, he is a great teacher. If you are going to take Math 225 be prepare to study a lot!
Literally thought it was just me being exhausted, but this man has talked me to sleep in two separate class meetings. Forget the subject matter, good heart aside this man needs to go back to learn how to teach.
He's honestly a good guy and if you approach him he will try to help you. However, he does not know how to teach. He will go on for 20 minutes before he realizes that what he was teaching us was wrong. His lectures are extremely confusing, even on simple subjects. You just simply cannot learn from his class.
Otero is stingy with EVERY single homework assignment. He lists problems that aren't actually in the book and the homework makes up a lot of your grade. Also he assigns an 8-15 page paper for A MATH CLASS. That is the most ridiculous thing ever. Not to mention the lectures are confusing and be prepared to teach yourself how to do the homework.
He was not helpful at all. He was always super late at grading things. He never could explain things in a way that could help.
This class was the worst. I highly do not recommend taking any class by Otero. He was generally very rude and not understanding of outside circumstances such as getting sick. Class was boring and he graded extremely hard.
This class was so terribly boring and so weird. The math was neither relevant nor did it make sense. Otero is rude to some students and assigns two 5-10 page papers for a math class.. He grades tough and his tests are super short so if you even miss one question your grade sinks. Would not recommend.
I know what you're thinking. You're looking at the rating and thinking it's not that bad I can do it. DO NOT. He is an absolutely terrible teacher. He himself often doesn't know how to do the problems he assigns and his lectures are absolutely terribly boring. He makes you stay after class has ended and assigns an 8 page paper for a math class.
he is flat out awful do not take this class. your welcome. Danny O you need to rethink what you are doing in life.
Otero is an ok professor. He is challenging and I spent hours doing the assigned 3-5 problems. During class he is dry, not engaging. Basically, you have to learn on your own and do not expect him to go over any of the problems. Make sure your homework is perfect, he takes off points if you do something wrong, even the slightest. Not a fan
Professor Otero is an ok professor. I say okay because he pushes me to understand the math which I appreciate not being so hot on it at all in the first place, but overall he is not a welcoming person. There isn't much homework, but the homework that is given can take hours upon hours/or days to do if you procrastinate like me.
Wants you to do well in his class and makes it extremely difficult to do poorly, he takes attendance & it's part of your grade, but going to class is worth it because he explains the excel hw & online hw. Frustrating bc he explains online hw after you do it, but you can get q's wrong as many times as you want and just keep retrying.
He assigns homework before teaching you how to do it. He also assigns a ton of Excel stuff without really going over how to do it. There were 2 tests throughout the semester and your final grade replaced your lowest test score. I got A's on both of the tests and a B on the final and he replaced my A with a B. Would not recommend
He gives lots of assignments. 2 weekly assignments plus a weekly quiz. Basically had to do these on the weekend and Monday nights.
Not impossible to do good grade wise, impossible to learn though. I have had been learning experiences from watching a fish swim then anything this man can teach. I should not be the only one that is upset that my tuition pays this mans salary. I think he is honestly just such a great guy. SIKE!
Dr. Otero is awesome. He teaches calculus in a way that makes it interesting. I would recommend you take the class but know he does give a decent amount of homework and navigating his online textbook and online homework can be challenging. If you do take the class, buy the print textbook.
Dr. Otero is a good professor in that he throughly explains the course material and is there if you are confused or have questions. However, some flaws in his class is that sometimes with the excel assignments he'll teach things included in there after it is due. The online homework is also incredibly frustrating, nick picky, and confusing
Do the work sheets in class and finish all assignments online and youll easily pass
Never take this mans class, awful teacher, horrible lectures, bad at teaching. Has someone else do the grading, would never recommend to anyone.
Otero is a nice guy, but in my opinion he is not a good professor. He goes off track during class and spent most of our one hour and fifteen minute classes on three problems. The class isnt hard, however, and if you show up you can easily pass.
His class was hybrid and I think he struggled with finding something that works for the students. He utilizes the black board a lot during class which is almost impossible to see from your computer, and overall does not do a great job of teaching. I am passing this class because I do the homework assignments, but have failed every single test.
The amount of frustration I get while doing homework is absurd. There are too many things in the homework that he does not even mention in class. If he does teach how to do something, it will probably be one time so make sure you're paying attention. The internet has taught me more than his lectures. It is not easy to ask him questions either.
I spent at least 5 hours a week on homework WITH help. 3 grad student tutors couldn't help because they didn't know how to. I love math, HATE this professor. Doesn't answer questions if confused, does 3 problems the whole class. gives 2/3 on almost all assignments. office hours are useless. would NEVER recommend. avoid this prof at all costs.
Otero's a nice guy, he's just not great at explaining things. Class was difficult, even more so when we went virtual because of COVID. Ended up doing this class pass/fail. Knows a lot about Excel, just isn't great at explaining math. I feel like he'd do better as a business professor.
Prof. Otero just doesn't seem at all to have a passion for teaching. He does not care to explain things at all, and if he does; it is not explained well or clearly. I have taken calculus prior to this class and I still heavily struggled. If you have never taken calc before or actually need a teacher to teach you, do not take this class.
On the first day of class, this professor handed us a 438-page chapter book on the history of equations for ancient calendars and almost everything besides math. He told us that he would not be following the textbook, BUT the tests are all based on the textbook. He didn't provide a textbook to use so it was extremely hard to get an A. DO NOT TAKE
Terrible. This is an incredibly boring class. I truly dont understand why its a math class. You literally learn the philosophy of time. Also, his homework is incredibly confusing and he says that you have a textbook but not everyone receives it.
I didn't think he was nearly as bad as the reviews made him out to be, but I can see why people dislike him. His teaching style will require you to do some self teaching. Compared to the stuff we did in class, his tests were fairly easy. Overall he's pretty nice and funny but he will expect you to put in the work.
I didn't hate the class but it was really really boring. I often found myself confused. I also feel like having to write papers in a math class is insane. I don't think he liked me either.
The topics he goes into are very interesting and he doesn't go super fast so you have time to comprehend what is happening. Dont look at other ratings. They expected to just go through "calculus" or "algebra" but come on people its called "Calendars and Timekeeping"!!! If you solely think of this as a math class you wont have fun. Its so much more!
He assigns a lot of homework but always explains the problems before you have to turn it in. I asked him for a lot of help outside of class and he was always available even outside of office hours. The online homework difficulty varies based on your participation in class. Take this class if you need it for credit.
Dr. Otero is such a nice, passionate, & patient professor & he will make time outside of class to help students! We go over the homework in class together before we turn it in & he really cares about his students and wants us to do well. He drops the lowest mid term exam & 3 lowest homeworks and the lowest project so he is really flexible.
Otero gives out homework each class, then teaches us how to do the homework in the next class. We average around three problems completed per day, and he always goes over the scheduled class time.
Had him for Math300 and 301. Incredible for both. Excellent person and a passionate teacher. Get ready to work hard, and absolutely attend office hours whenever possible.
I can't deal with this guy.
Dr Otero is very lecture heavy and expects you to know what you are doing without going over it, then gets mad when you are getting things wrong in his class. I struggled heavily in this class. We also always got out five to ten minutes late every class as well & often spent the whole class over two problems.
Dr. Otero lives inside his own head so much that he cannot actually teach math. Rather, he teaches the history of math, and not actually how to do calculus. The only thing that saved me was that I took AP Calc.
