Not a bad teacher but his test are the longest things ever 60 questions and 4 essays or just 80 questions they take a while. Also his class is pretty boring it seems to drag on and on. My advice would be to try to get one of the easier teachers for this section because for a principals class it is a serious pain in the ass!!!
A principles class should not be taught by a man whos last experience was Masters level classes at Tulane. For some reason this basic class was utilizing principles from senior and graduate level marketing classes. If you take it, dont drop the ball, study every night. The first test is very subjective, the others are more objective. Good Luck
A professor who should not be teaching a principles of marketing class. I went to class every day, studied for 2 hours every day after class, did all the homework assignments (which by the way don't count toward your grade) and still made a C for the course. If he's teaching the semester you want to take the course my advice is to wait.
Padgett rules! He is extremely helpful and you learn alot. Hes not easy but if you put in a little time a good grade will be had. His test are long problems, read the cases youll be fine
Don't take his class unless you have copies of his tests. He lectured us by saying the opnly A's were the people who came to class everyday but actually the only A's were the people who cheated. If you don't have his tests, be prepared for no better than a C. Goog Luck!
Its not an impossible class, but I went every day and studied for the tests and was barely able to make a B. I would recommend looking for someone else. He would probably be good in a higher level MKTG class.
class is very interesting, however his tests are impossible. he asks very specific and tricky questions. quite often, the test questions are not even from the notes or the book. he just finds random questions on a similar topic to what was covered in class. the only way possible to make an A is to cheat, and even then it's difficult
If you're a marketing major, then he's just great for you. but, if you're taking the principles class on the summer mini-semester for a requirement, then beware. Master's level classes at Tulane is what he's used to, and he even seems a bit insulted that they're making him teach the principles class. Subjective tests, with trick questions.
If you are not in marketing, stay out. There are too many now. If you are no good at school, try something else.
This class was not easy but I learned a lot. He is a good teacher and you can learn a lot if you put the time in. Even though his tests are hard, he scales a good bit and everyone came out ok with their grades. I recommend him of Rotfeld or anyone else.
This class is not easy, but Padgett is a wonderful professor. The first test will freak you out cause everyone does poorly, but he scales alot. Also, go to class!! It helps you during the class for understanding, and also in the end when it comes to your grade. He's a great guy and I highly recommend taking him at some point.
The class is not fun at all the tests will nearly make you cry. Dr. Padgett is really nice but has a very bogus attendance policy which is really not appropriate for college students. If you want to do a really hard core marketing job after you graduate than this might be a useful class for you, otherwise not so much!
The class is hard but Padgett is awesome! Learned a lot. He's more than willing to help out after hours if you need it. Hopefully he'll be teaching some MBA classes so I can take him again.
dr. padgett is a cool guy but his tests are very hard and his class itself is kind of worthless. he is always available for office hours and wants his students to do well, but the tests go beyond simply knowing and understanding the material.
Going to class helps very little. What he talks about in class is usually not on the test. All material is from book and his study guides. Tests are very difficult and questions are worded very tricky.
One of the worst teachers Ive had at Auburn. His test are unnecessarily hard. The way he words the questions on the test are just ridiculous. He sucks don't take him
My classmates cannot spell or do math. I am better than them, and so is the professor. Test were hard, but I did well.
Dr. Padgett is a fun and good teacher but when it comes to test time, he goes overboard. You could easily read and study for hours and still come out with a C. Try to avoid him if possible.
test are rediculous, class is worthless, he thinks hes funny, and says "see the concept" about 30 times a class and no one sees the concept
The last post cannot spell ridiculous.
I enjoyed the class. He makes the class very interesting. Exams in this class were some of the hardest I have taken in my life. READ EVERYTHING in the book before each test and do the practice tests on the CD or online. Be sure and practice the forecasting problems at the end. IF you do this you will have a great chance to be successful! Good Luck
Even if you know the material VERY well he makes his test questions unnecessarily tricky. Would NOT take again too much time taken away from my other classes just to make a B in this one.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! his tests are impossible, the test questions are tricky and sometimes extremely hard to understand. Way too difficult of a teacher for an introductory course! Drop this class and take it with someone else as soon as possible! Literally!
He's a helpful teacher. wants his students to do well, but makes his tests much harder than they should be. the material is easy, but he words his tests to where they are somewhat impossible. the final was probably one of the hardest tests i've ever had. i went to class reguarly, did the homework, and other activites but have little to show for it.
Overall the class was alright. The tests are difficult due to the subjective way that he words the answers. Read the book and take the practice tests online and you will do reasonably well. Class attendance really is not important. The final exam was extremely difficult; much harder than any of the tests (I have a 96). Easier teachers out there

He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He has done nothing in life but go to school and teach school. His real life examples of marketing are usually wrong. His tests are impossible to do well on because of the way that he words them. A principles class should not be half this hard. He is a horrible teacher and should teach kindergarden, if that.
The worst professor I have ever had! Attending class was pointless! The way he worded his tests was ridiculous, especially for an intro class. Way too much effort for an average grade. If you are unfortunate enough to have to take this idiot read everything and be sure to do the practice quizzes on the CD that comes with the book!
FYI ridiculously slow at grading scantron exams.. It can be tedious to run them through a machine apparently. Average time to grade them is about a week.
Very easy class if you put the effort in. Go to class, read the book, and actively engage in the material. I don't understand why everyone thought the tests were so hard, I couldn't see how he could make them much easier. He is slow to grade tests, but is a nice guy if you put in a sincere effort.
For an introductory course, if you work hard and study your ass off, still expect a C. He takes questions directly from the book but some are so detailed and worded differently everyone always gets them wrong on the Exam. He is a very difficult teacher and takes the Principles course WAY to seriously. Definitely needs to make things alittle easier
Read the book and take very detailed notes. Don't save it. Study every night what he goes over in class. His tests are hard and it is kind of choose the best answer, sometimes more than one answer may be correct. He is a great teacher though. Maybe the best i've had in terms of how he teaches. I would recommend him if marketing is your major.
His test are very hard, and he knows it. You choose the "best" anwser(based on what he feels) He is helpful if you are putting in effort. As a marketing major I had to take him twice. In the classroom he seems to be a jerk but during office hrs. he really tries to help.
Not a bad teacher, very helpful if you ask, and fun to listen to in class because he talks about interesting things. Unfortunately, none of these things are on any of the tests, which are some of the most difficult and confusing tests you'll ever take. Only take him if you're a marketing major.
Don't take if you want a class that will help you in the future or have test that go with what he teaches in class.
Just got done taking this guy's final. I studied ALOT for it as well as the other tests and yet I felt very unprepared. Went over the final exam study guide and couldn't even find the answers/material in the book or slides he gave. First time I've ever rated someone because this class was ridiculous. Avoid if at all possible!
Unnecessarily hard class. The lectures are pretty interesting but the tests come straight from the book, so there is a lot of outside reading/memorization. The tests can be tricky but go to his office hours because Dr. Padgett is a nice guy and is willing to help you!
Very interesting class, keeps your attention and explains things very well. Tests are Super Hard. You have to read, study every day and have a complete understanding of everything he talks about to ace his tests.
This classnis difficult no matter what teacher you have. Padgett is extremely helpful and a genuinely nice guy. Classes are not pointless and office hours are great if you need help.
Class is absolutely worthless. Save yourself some time and don't even bother to go. Nothing he says in class will be on the test. Instead use that time and just read the book every day and you can get a decent grade in the class.
I thought he was a very good teacher. I think the main thing people have a problem with in marketing class is how if you do not have a good grasp of concepts they can tend to overlap. However Padgett does a good job of explaining in class as is very personable in his office. I would recommend reading the book as well as attending class.
No matter who you have, Principles of Marketing is an extremely difficult course. Dr. Padgett is definitely the best professor to have for it though, because he walks through the concepts in class and shows how they are applied. Read the book before class and take detailed notes; if you slack off, you will not pass the course. Just forewarning.
This class is absolutely ridiculous. Not only does he make the class unnecessarily hard, the test questions are ambiguous and contain more than one correct answer, depending on how you perceive it. A "principles" course should never operate under this guy's skewed vision of what fair stands for. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
AWFUL teacher. Haven't learned a single thing by going to class. Test are very confusing. I've never seen such easy material made so complex. NOT what a principles teacher should be like. May receive my first C in college because of him.
WORST TEACHER. CHANGE IF YOU HAVE HIM. Class is worthless and he just reads off his power points. Tests are extremely difficult and inconsistent from one to the other. Cumulative Final. Lots of worthless homework and a project over thanksgiving break. Worst class at Auburn so far
Terribly designed tests. For such easy to understand material, it's as if the tests are hard just for the sake of being hard. Padgett rambles way too much in his lectures,so don't count much of what he's saying to end up on the tests. His review days are also a joke since he only tells us what we ask, rather than what we actually need to know.
By far the worse teacher I've had at Auburn. He has material on his tests that he does not cover nor is it in the book. He makes his tests a lot harder than they need to be. Do not take him.
I did not enjoy Padgett's teaching skills for this class. He obviously knows what he is talking about when it comes to Marketing, but he has a very poor method for teaching the material to students. His lectures are difficult to listen to, because he can ramble and rant about absolutely nothing helpful on one slide for the entire class period.
I assume the negative comments are from people who don't attend class regularly (out of my 200 person, 50 people actually attend). In going to class, you will find that he really knows his stuff, is a funny guy, and provides every opportunity to help you succeed. Keep up with the material, as he constantly suggests, and you will make an A.
I personally enjoyed this class. People are lazy and don't want to read the book and expect him to break every detail down. READ THE BOOK CONSTANTLY and you will be fine. This is college. Great professor. I actually changed my major to marketing because of him. Awesome guy. you just have to put in the work, like anything else in life.
I've learned nothing from his lectures. To pass the class, you must read the book with and do the online homework. Each assignment takes approx. 2 hours. He is a nice guy, but this class is extremely difficult. The tests are very difficult.
Lectures can be entertaining but are useless as far as the material is concerned. I went to maybe the first five or so. They amount to a very dumbed down version of the text. Just read the book and you'll do fine.
You won't pass Padgett's class without knowing the material, but it's really not that hard. Just read the book and outline it and do the homework. His questions are super similar to the online ones and he'll highlight stuff in class! Read the book and always went to class (didn't always pay attention) and I easily pulled out an A.
topics covered in class are not on the test. test questions are not the type of questions that should be asked in an intro course. studied my butt off and couldn't get higher than a D on the exams, but the homework counted for 40% which helped with the overall grade. Don't take him if you can avoid it.
Never went to class got a B and easily if I do say so. Class was not helping because the man lectures with no background unless you actually read your chapters every night so like me class was a waste of time. If you read the book and do the homework a B is an easy task.
Material is not difficult if you read, but Padgett is NOT helpful, he's rude and disrespectful to students, even those who are doing well in the class. It's very difficult to work with him and I would recommend trying to take someone else. Read the book.
Worst Professor I've ever had. His tests are impossible, even after reading the chapters. This is an entry level class, it really should not be this difficult. I would take someone else.
Padgett has good intentions, but his principles of mktg class was was definitely way too hard for an entry level class. Everyone I knew struggled. Only 3 tests and a final, and the tests covered so much material. Don't go to class, just read the book extensively and do the "optional" online homework for sure. A lot of time and effort to do well
I am not the type of person to typically write a review but this class was WAY too difficult for a principles class. Padgett is very knowledgeable on the subject but doesn't get that this is an intro class. I attended class, went to office hours, and studied my butt off for the test and never made above a D. READ THE TEXTBOOK and online material.
Way too difficult for a principles class, but the man knows what he is talking about. Tests seem easy but are very tricky. When studying I found myself saying "oh obviously" to many of the terms and principles but the tests were just sooo much harder than they should have been.
This is the WORST class I have taken at Auburn. I don't have one good thing to say about this teacher. Read the book and attended class but still struggled to make a B (This was my first B at Auburn). He was not helpful at all and lectures were scattered and boring. Plus he eliminated homework because it boosted grades too much. Avoid at all costs
Padgett was exactly what these other reviews say. His lectures were pointless, he would cover MAYBE 6 slides for the hour and 15 min lecture. Tests were the only grades you had and they were impossible. Pay for the McGraw Hill Connect and take the practice quizzes for each chapter because that is the only way you will pass this class.
He was awful. Worst class I have taken at Auburn. Do not take him for Principles of MKTG. Should not have been that hard for a principles class.
I am an A student and Padgett has made me work harder for an A in this PRINCIPLES class than any other teacher. He takes what should be simple and makes it tough to justify what hes devoted his life to. The tests are unnecessarily difficult and reading the book is necessary if you want to pass. Going to class is a waste of time, just focus on book
Don't do take this guy you will kill your GPA. Auburn please get us a new professor for principles of Marketing.
Lectures are long and monotonous. Gets off topic but somehow he thinks it relates. Tests are hard. Don't get the textbook. It's useless. Buy the online thing he recommends at the beginning of the semester. I didn't know anyone who had a C or higher before the final exam. Curved the final grade by about 5-10.
This was a ridiculous class. Do not take Padgett if you can avoid him. Worst class I have taken at Auburn-I am a senior. He gives no direction as to what will be on the exams. The book is useful and so is the online material. But it is hard to memorize EVERY single word in the book, and that is what he requires.
A Principles of Marketing class should NOT be this difficult. Padgett makes things so much harder than they need to be. Multiple answers for his questions are correct and you have to learn how he would answer to get them correct even if another answer is more correct. He is no help at all, and doesn't care, and isn't friendly.
By far the worst professor in Auburn's marketing department.
Okay so I took this class online. There was only one group discussion post, one mini case study, and one test a unit so not too much work. The case study and discussions were super easy. He's a really nice guy and cares about students. He could definitely be easier to reach and his class could be easier but I have had waaaaaay worse professors.
Dr. Padgett is definitely a super easy personality to get along with. He is one of those professors that will give as much as you do. I have found that, when I approach him to ask for feedback, he is usually responsive and thorough with his answers. The material in the class is only challenging if you don't take it seriously.
Dr. Padgett is hands down the worst professor I have had while attending Auburn. Any time you go to him to ask a question he blows you off and makes you feel stupid. I truly don't understand why he ever thought being a teacher would be a good idea. Avoid him at all costs, even if you have to take the class somewhere else.
Professor Padgett's lectures were very straight and to the point. He only has two big exams, the midterm and the final, but he gives the questions beforehand which gives you plenty of time to think about your answers & work the problems. He has group simulations but those are pretty cool when you have a nice group to work with. Be patient w/ grades
The worst. Very lazy. Makes his tests so hard that you can’t actually learn anything. Lectures straight from the textbook HE wrote. Only grades are the two tests and optional final. DO NOT take. Fail the first exam? Good luck Charlie. I haven’t heard one good thing about this class/professor. I repeat.. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
I would recommend to absolutely no one. this professor makes this class insanely hard for no reason...you only have three tests with no other grades and on the tests he makes each question as if your reading his mind and blind picking an answer out of the 4 options. I understand everything he teaches but come test time it doesn't matter.
This class is the biggest joke ever. Auburn does a terrible job regulating this class, but there is no way that as an accounting student this should be my hardest class. The tests are stupid difficult, and even for someone who studies a good amount, I would honestly be better off just randomly guessing. Avoid him if you can.
Do not take Principles of Marketing with Padgett at all costs. As a Finance major, this should not be my hardest class! My friends who aren't business majors know who Padgett is because he is notorious around campus for being a terrible teacher. He puts in little to no effort into this class. He has not once answered an email of mine. Avoid!!
Marketing should not be this hard, you have 3 test but the test is nothing like the lecture, book, or study guide. If you have no other options but to take him my best advice is to not take it and try to get someone else. What every you do DO NOT take his class.
Padgett's lectures are straightforward and interesting, but unfortunately his tests are ridiculous for no reason. You could understand a concept from the textbook (which he wrote) but if you don't understand how his brain works and how he thinks, then you're only going to get a B max on the exams. His questions on exams are luck of the draw..
I have only received a grade lower than a B once in college and it was a 79. So explain to me how I am getting a D in Principles of Marketing currently. For test 2 I doubled my study time to 8 hours. AND I GOT A 60. Do not take this class if you care about your GPA. I was going to graduate with Magna hours and now I have no shot.
Worst class I've ever taken while in college. The guy has devoted his life to marketing and acts as if his lectures are some sort of divine revelation. He overcomplicates what should be incredibly simple concepts, and then is virtually unreachable when you have questions. Test questions have multiple correct answers. One of the hardest As I've made
This class is one of the worst classes at Auburn. You have to memorize the textbook because the test questions are so detailed, the class is entirely more difficult than it needs to be. I had a 4.0 as a junior before taking the class. I would avoid if at all possible. He records his lectures which was nice and gave some extra credit.
Not a good experience. Only four tests the whole semester and those were the only grades besides two extra credit assignments. Very lecture heavy and tests are confusing.
This class was definitely one of the more challenging ones. You only have 3 test grades and that is it. He offers an optional final to replace the lowest test grade. He gave extra credit assignments after each test which helped a lot! You have to read the textbook, and study for days in order to get a good grade on the exams.
Most of what I think about this guy is not appropriate for this website. This is an intro marketing course meant for all business majors, but he turns it into a high-level class for marketing majors. There's a fine line between challenging your students to get them thinking critically and actively trying to trick them, and he goes miles past it.
I never went to class or watched the lectures online and made a B. You have to read the book to pass this class. The tests are not bad if you study well for them. He gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and they help you so much!
The test are ridiculously hard for an intro marketing class. I have only made one C in college and this class will be my second. He gives easy extra credit for all exams, which is nice but it barely helps when you study for 6+ hours and still make a D. The test are solely example-based and he purposely tries to trick you with the answer choices.
This class was way overcomplicated. The tests were so badly worded and even had misspellings. It is a test bank with questions from practice tests and new questions so you could be lucky and get ones you have seen before or not. Very unfair way of conducting tests in my opinion. Also this guy makes no sense in his responses to student questions.
The class lectures seemed pretty straightforward and easy to understand but his tests are overcomplicated and are very tricky with the wording. Extra credit assignments are pretty much useless unless you just need 1 or 2 points to get the next letter grade. Study guides are very vague. For an intro class kinda ridiculous in my opinion.
The course was graded with 3 exams, equally weighted, with an optional cumulative final. The tests were definitely far more complicated than they needed to be, especially since the material is not complicated. He wrote the textbook, so if you read it, you should be fine. I wouldn't necessarily recommend his class, but an A is still possible.
Missed the deadline for course evals so decided to take my review here. This guy is the absolute worst. His subject is simple so he overcompensates by making his tests ridiculously hard. Most questions have multiple correct answers and he asks for the "most correct". If you ask for clarification he'll either ignore your email or smart off. Avoid.
If you ever try to get into contact with him you can't. He might be one of the most difficult people to get into contact with, he only tells you to talk to his TAs. He has never talked to a student about class material. I hope the Auburn University marketing department reads this. He wrote the textbook and swears by it, good luck. HE SUCKS!
Just a bad teacher, plain and simple. He wrote the textbook and will live and die by it. Good luck on his tests, all of the answer choices are correct and he will try and trick you at every turn. Stay away at all costs, and if not, good luck.
Was in a class of over 400 students and the test average was consistently in the 60s. Not only that, but not a single student scored a 100 on any of his tests the entire semester. When you are in a class that big and no student can get a 100, I think it proves that the teacher is the problem, not the students. By far worst professor I've had at AU.
This class is one of the worst I have taken. This teacher thrives off the fact that students struggle in his class. I just barely made a B at the very end of the semester. Studying for the tests feels like a waste of time after you take it because of how hard and ridiculous they are.
Awful professor. Padgett thinks that he is a saint, and refuses to acknowledge his faults. Tests are different for everybody since he makes massive test banks, so your grade is almost entirely up to luck. Don't attempt to reach out for clarification, as he will either ignore you or direct you back to his vague announcements.
Easy class, not a lot of work. Textbook required & helps A LOT- he wrote it and most test questions are directly answered in book. He cold calls on people during class very often so i stopped attending in person and simply relied on reading the book and the class notes he posts on canvas- never made lower than an A on a test. Extra credit offered.
Hardest final exam I have ever done.
I think Dr. Padgett gets a bad rap on here. Yeah his tests are hard, but I figured out how to study for them and I think the real-world examples he uses will help his students in the future. Also, no one talks about the massive amounts of easy extra credit he gives to boost your grade drastically. **Update: lied and change his mind about ex. credit
I love marketing and enjoyed reading the textbook, but the tests were extremely hard for no reason. He changed his mind mid year about extra credit and didn't let us know until last minute, which I think is infuriating. READ the text book and the class notes he posts, as well as the quizzes. Hard but do able to make an A. Find an easier teacher
How are you going to say we can get 10 extra points for each exam if we do the extra credit work, apply it to the first exam, and then not apply it to the other two? Are you just lazy? If so then do not make promises than you clearly can not keep. Crazy how you just changed how extra credit worked last minute, as if no one was going to call you out
He completely lied about how extra credit was going to work on the very last week so that more people would take his ridiculously hard final. I can even recall a time he said things like "and if you can't get this right on the test then you might as well drop out." Really just a terrible teacher that assumes you're the reason half the class has a C
He grades of participation heavily, and I never missed a class but got a failing grade on my participation, which makes a lot of sense. He is also obsessed with the textbook because he wrote it and will include small things from the textbook on the tests that he never taught. -8/10
Try to avoid him if you can. He lives and dies by his textbook, and if you don't read it, you won't do well on his tests. He's not transparent about his grading criteria, and he hurt a lot of people's grades because of participation despite not being given any opportunity to participate. It's a miracle I made a B in his class can be rude.
its an awful class
In my personal opinion if I was this teacher's superior and let this go on to this point and saw these comments and did nothing they should be fired also. I mean really... 70 total "Awful and ok" scores on Rate My Professor I have never seen so bad!
Purposely tricks you on every test question... My engineering classes should not be easier than an entry-level "principle of marketing class." Crazy how this professor can accumulate this much hate toward him and his class/material over the years and nobody has stepped in to fix it...
He is definitely the worst professor I have EVER had as a college student. He makes his test so difficult that if you go to class, read the book, and study your wasting your time. The class average for my class on the Exam was a 45 and he does not care. He makes an intro class 10390914 harder than it really is. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!
Pretty good professor. 3 exams and optional final. All you have to do is make sure you read the chapters for each exam. first exam was proctored but he gave us the opportunity to retake it with it being open book and open note. Then he made the other 2 exams open book open note. extra credit is available and he will use it if youre on a threshold.
Funny and relatable guy as much as a very dedicated marketing professor and the textbook assigned for the class is full of his own writing and teachings. The exams are by far the hardest ones Ive taken so far along my college journey, but are passable by showing up to every lecture as well as becoming familiar with the chapter examples.
His exams were extremely difficult and he was not sympathetic at all. I attended every single lecture and even sat right at the front like a nerd and was fully engaged and would raise my hand during class. This was my first non A in my whole college experience and let me tell you it was not for a lack of effort. DO NOT take this professor!!!
Really enjoyed this class despite not being a marketing major. Dr. Padgett makes the lectures interesting with personal stories. The tests were difficult but he accommodated by making them open book/note, so if you can't get a good grade at that point, that's on you. Just read/take notes on the textbook and attend lecture and you'll be fine.
Such a bad professor. He wrote the textbook so there's basically no supplemental instruction. I didn't understand the examples and he said he didn't have any better one so I didn't understand the material in that case. Was never helpful one-on-one and the final grade is just 3 tests. Would avoid at all costs.
He makes his test so difficult and hard to make an A on. After the first test, he made all of his test open note and open book and the grades we still not great. I am a marketing major and struggled with this class.
Worst professor at Auburn. Legit makes this class the hardest marketing class for no reason. He wrote the book, so he has a big head about what you need to know. Way too much material to study and hard to grasp. Pick literally any other professor for mktg 4800. This class might be the reason I don't graduate.
I have many friends taking the other professors and Padgett sounds the best by far. Three tests all throughout the semester and he is a tough grader. After the first test you will understand what he is looking for. He cares about his students and he will help you if you go to him after class. The attendance grade at the end of the semester helps
Make sure to take this class if you are interested in memorizing meaningless marketing word salad babble and seek to be graded solely on your capacity to regurgitate it verbatim on a written exam.
