He's a younger teacher and is still passionate about what he teaches. Unfortuantely, he jus reads off of the overhead. Then again, thats what the midterm and exam are based on. Clear and offers lots of choice on tests
I found this teacher VERY boring. He is not a fluid lecturer (constant ums) and does not seem to be to confident when lecturing. The information he presents in a 3 hour class would take an hour to present by another prof.
Inexperienced and it shows. Boring, drawn-out, stammering lectures, poorly-answered questions, many gaps in his knowledge. Saving grace: looks good in tight jeans.
I wish I could have learned more. WAY too much dry reading. Discussion groups got better but they weren't the best means of learning the material. Had so much potential but ended up being a dry class. Wouldn't recommend it.
He is a sweet man.. new to teaching, but in a few years will be great...
Once again, a ton of dry readings, but the lectures themselves are relatively interesting. The constant "ums" appear to be more of a mannerism than uncertainty. Exams hold no surprises and are extremely flexible (answer 5 of 20 questions). Biggest flaw is that he will not take a stance on any issue.
If you're in class to get an easy mark, take a class with this professor. If you're in class to really learn something, avoid. Seems like a genuinely nice man, but content/readings are extremely boring, his delivery is awful, and he has no control over the cocky but brainless members of the class who hijacked his lecturers with asinine comments
How did this guy even get a teaching job here?? He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, doesn't know how to answer questions that students ask, and is not willing to share his opinions on anything. And I thought Karmis was boring...
AVOID! His three hour lectures can and should be reduced to an hour considering sometimes he just talks to fill in the time. He never seems to understand what he's talking about, will put question marks on his slides because he doesn't know if he's right, and will agree with any of his students if they contradict his statements. It is quite clear h
This prof is the worst I had all semester. I went to maybe 5 of his classes, because everything was so boring. The class is not really that difficult, and his lectures are useless. Waste of time, switch sections if you get this guy. He only gave us 10% of our mark before the exam too... waste!
Avoid like plague!I'm an avid student - love being back in school but this class makes me want to shoot myself every week.Prof is boring, avoids making opinions, can't take criticism or direct ques. & is vindictive re. marks. Subj. has unlim. potential to be interesting but prof kills the desire to learn. Also, he has no control over the class.
WOW..This guy was the biggest arrogant dink/crybaby ever. Not only does he treat you like your five, taking 40 min to explain a slide on office hours but he refuses to answer emails that are "bossy" ex writing "respond at your earliest convenience"..which is his job to do!! He sent us into the final with only 10% of our final mark!!! AVOID!!
Nice guy, but takes FOREVER handing stuff back. brutal
AVOID!!!!!!! The class was death! Any other teacher could cover his three hour lecture in about 25 minutes! The assignments were not well spread out and we went into the final without knowing more than 10% of our final marks. BRUTAL!!!!! This class will make you question your existance and why you are paying so much money to attend university!
Wow. Pretty mediocre would be the best way to describe this teacher. The class is easy, but sooo boring when he takes 20 minuits to explain one slide. The discussion group participation marks are very random. He expects you to read two textbooks worth of readings before the final. I didnt read any and got a B.
didn't realize how mundane this class was until I had to drop it, and the other professor was extremely interesting. P-A refuses to take a stance or share his opinions on any topic, which does not make you want to question or analyze anything. i think it has to do w/ lack of experience. sorry, professor. avoid this class, guys.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!TRUST ME!
Un mot.... Wow
He is a great teacher. He is, of course, very knowledgeable on the topic. Also very importantly, when he doesn't know something and he should know it, he is not afraid to admit he is wrong and try to correct it.Politics is an interesting class and he helps keep it that way! good job!
once he gets a little more comfortable he willbe a great prof
Little control over the class which means he can let some guy talk about something unimportant for an hour leaving him little time to cover stuff related to the course. Very boring lectures as well.
I thought this guy was clear and helpful. I had him at Carleton. He was very understanding about a personal situation. And I purposely took a 2nd class with him. Plus he's a feminist! Not enough male poli sci profs really teach feminism, they just gloss over it in the "other" category.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. He's an awesome prof, and I hattee politics! I think he was really easy to understand and very organized :)
He's a little anal about how he wants things, but that is a positive i think, I loove him!! at first i thought the class was a bore but once we got past the war "stuff" it got a lot more interesting. In fact, he's a little intimidating because he knows SOO much!!! He's the smartest and most knowledgeable prob ive had yet. His class is my favorite!!
I guess he did gain some experience, because he is not at all like some other described him, His classes are interesting and he is good at teching overall.
First of all, he is practically identical to M. Night Shyamalan. I wish just once he would say "What a twist!" (like in Robot Chicken) Anyways...a good prof. Young, but smart for his age. His lecture can drag out a bit, but he's always open for discussions which makes it fun. For someone who dosn't really like Politics, I found this class good.
A young prof who knows alot for his age. His classes were interesting each time. Very organized and precise in what he wants. A good listener when it comes to students talking to him. Exams are not hard if you go through his slides and the readings. Very nice and open to ideas.
I was told by a lot of people before I took this class what a bad prof he was..but he turned out to be one of the best profs I had this semester. Really young..but he knows what he is talking about. Lectures are organized and clear. He definately goes beyond the textbook in his explainations. Assignments are easy. take his course if u can!!
Nice man & class wasnt extremely boring. But takes himself too serious. Refused to answer general questions via e-mail and it always seemed that he took questions very personally. Was negative towards students that tried to engage in open dialouge or whom did not agree with his opinions. Did not provide an open minded environent. AVOID IF YOU CAN!
Worst Prof Ive had so far! i wouldn't suggest taking any class he's affiliated with. Take my word for it.
so useless,can't answer simple questions.
Some students intimidated when announced that A+ is unlikely. All but one lecture interesting. Good idea to take notes of textbook and readings. Really helpful in explaining difficult concepts in textbook. First experience with a discussion group and it was great. As predicted, nil A+, three As, only one failure, rest were in range of B+ to C.
Wow, this guy was really boring and the class was useless. To top it off he grades everyone down. TA's were overly opinionated and tried to dominate discussions (marks reflected biases). God knows where his marking scheme came from. Never answers questions and whines excessively. Worst professor, period. Question mark slides... no answers. AVOID!!!
Umm, he ok i guess, does become very boring. All good when your playing games in class though
The last comment sums up this prof, great guy takes like 3x amount of time to teach something. dry class
Professor is very knowledgable, probably too knowledgable for the good of the class. A lot of readings, and assignments are not explained clearly. Difficult to get a good mark.
He's a young prof, and I think he's still getting comfortable. His exam was brutally hard. Lectures were clear but he allowed people to blab on for too long about things the class didn't really want to hear. The fact that it was a 3 hour night class might have affected the mood and willingness of people to be there.
This class was kind of a disappointment because I don't feel like I learned ANYTHING! The discussions were helpful and the position papers were easy and clear assignments but the issues he chose to have us discuss weren't really relevant or interesting to most students. There must be better sections of this course...
Very Boring. Doesnt want students to e-mail him. Covers way to much material for nothing... hardly learned anything! I really do not recommend anyone taking his class. Pol 1101 yes, but not with him as your professor.
Lectures were okay. Prof didn't answer emails and seemed to resent students. No feed back was given on assignements which was annoying. Exam was long.
entertaining, a couple of not so great lectures.
I learned nothing in his course that I didn't already know. He demands respect while not seeming to give it just because he's a professor which is disgusting and only accentuates the fact that he's sub-par and insecure. Would not have him as a prof again.
Daniel is the epitome of a self-righteous professor. Unfortunately for his students, he only subscribes to the status-quo of many university professors - he is obviously liberal and given to social comment upon anything that is thought to be conservative. This is not normally a problem, but with Daniel, it becomes annoying - nauseating, even.
"DPA", as he refers to himself, is an inexperienced teacher. he drags out class much too long not realizing the boredom and restlessness of the class. his awkward jokes make many uncomfortable and unwilling to learn. overall, he made the class very hard to learn from.
Worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't answer emails; he's rude, and it became apparent that he doesn't give a **** about teaching. If you are reading this, Mr. Antoine - just stick to research. Please!
WORST PROF! gave an hour lecture about how to email him! And then wasn't polite enough to answer them himself! He was so anal with Assignment format that each section had to be only a certain number of lines! not a range of lines, exactly 21 lines or you loose 2% each time! INSANE! AVOID!
He seemed insecure and made lots of bad jokes but gave helpful input for the essay assignment. Assigned lots of reading that wasn't necessary. The course was almost self-explanatory. Not a bad prof, but definitely not the greatest.
Avoid, avoid, avoid. His lectures are three hours of dictionary definitions of various globalization topics. Makes no attempt to connect any of the concepts he "teaches". Ridiculously anal about assignments. Every section has to be an EXACT number of lines or he will deduct marks. I want my tuition back.
Generally great class.
Overall very dissapointed with the way he teaches. Had him for 3 hours straight and it was so long because he talks about one slide for like 20 minutes and none onf that stuff was on the exam. Exam is not bad but a tough marker. He really means there is no easy marks in this class. Expect to lose your scholarship to this guy.
I don't understand these comments either. I think he's a very good prof, who actually cares about/ puts time & effort into his lectures. His assignments are also very reasonable, and he is a generous marker. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him, especially his gender & IR course! Don't be jaded by these other comments- he's great!
Maybe he's not good at teaching first year courses or something, because I don't know what these comments are on about. I loved his class and think he is a good prof. I can see how his lectures might drag on if they were three hours but we had half lecture/half discussion and it wasn't bad at all. the readings he chose for the course were GREAT.
I really enjoyed his class and him. He clearly cares about teaching, and this is reflected in his lectures. His assginments were also super reasonable-- I would absolutely recommend taking a class with him!
Would spend half the time talking about theories that has little to do with the class. confused/mixed up simple terms and was not very responsive to answering questions in class.
Admittedly, I was wary prior to attending his class, but for a fourth year seminar, he was extremely accommodating and encouraged valuable discussion amongst my peers. The grades were posted in a document online next to the student number, and legitimately not one person in our class received below a B+. I would recommend him any day.
teaching assistants mark all the assignments and very poorly at that. The professor is rude (does not want students emailing him at all) Your mark rests on two pointless paper([and the ta) and an exam. I despised this class and find that it could have been a better experience with a different professor. No point in attending his class either
His Intro to Poli-Sci course is really general. He was always very vague and made weird jokes no one ever laughed at. The two papers we had to do for his class were completely unrelated to the material covered in-class. His exam, although easy was tremendously long and agonising
Overall the class was pretty good. However, it is a loaded course and challenging to take during spring sem. due to time constraints. It seems the professor did not take this into account or the fact that students might have other classes and made the final cumulative with emphasis on the first half. The course is not hard just very time consuming.
great professor. Had him for two classes and he is really smart despite being a younger prof. Has a good sense of humour and is generally interesting to listen to. 5/5
The first year political science class I'm taking is just super boring, it isn't his fault! He is a pretty good prof...he's nice. That counts for something, right? Basically your classic middle of the pack professor. Nothing special.
This guy is really boring, tries to be funny but fails.. big time. He speaks the entire time without making the topic come to life, I have profs who are WAY better! He is not interesting, his teaching method is horrific and I'm astonished at how ridiculously redundant and stupid his essay guidelines are. Do NOT recommend!!!
An apt description of him is a tedious, dreary man. Though initially he may look young, his humour and his bland approach proves extremely painful after the point of 10 minutes. If you can avoid taking his class, I recommend you do it, as though other profs assign more, it's well worth having someone who will keep you awake
The prof is really boring he speaks in monotone and goes off on random tangents that are completely irrelevant. He reads off his slides and posts them on the website,so there is no reason to come to class.
Very boring prof. Uninteresting and unenthusiastic. Reads off his slides which make coming to class useless.
Very boring prof, in no way does he give the topic life. If you can get another prof, go for it.
Although his guidelines may seem strict, what he tells you for an assignment and what he tells his TA's is different. This leads to marks being deducted due to following his instructions.
Very clear about his expectations. Not the most interesting lecturer but the discussions groups were very good and his essay topics were really interesting.
WORSE Prof. I have ever had (had him for two different courses). He reads off his slides, don't bother reading the textbook because he won't test on it, he puts everything on his slides. He is not engaging, and very boring, and has massive, very apparent biases. If you don't agree with him, then watch out if he marks your papers.
I enjoyed this class. Interesting discussion groups. The thing is that the TAs had to mark based on the form of the essays and if you are off by a couple of lines they take marks off.
DPA is such a nice dude! Easy marker and lenient. You didn't really need to do the readings for this class seeing as there were no exams just a presentation and a final paper. However, I did not really learn anything. He's cool!
I loved Pierre-Antoine! Such an interesting course, he used simple slides and tells you what you need to know. We didn't have a midterm, only two papers with two discussions on the topic of the papers. I bought the textbook but we didn't even open it once, just go to class and you're set. I got an A- easily. Def recommend (:
He is very nice and tries to make class interesting. He is very indecisive when marking and telling you what he wants and how to do it on an assignment. He is not very helpful when you have questions.
Great prof. Very knowledgeable and you finish the course with a significantly deeper understanding of the issues addressed. His discussion questions are really interesting. He is also very understanding. I would definitely take another course with him.
I had a large interest in political science before coming to this class, but pierre-antoine completely ruined it; he's bland, boring, and his jokes aren't funny at all. Doesn't explain what he wants on assignments, resulting in many people not getting grades they wanted.
The subject matter is very interesting, he has some very provocative discussion questions, and it's easy to contribute without having done all of (or any) of the readings. If you have a genuine interest in Gender and International Relations it will be an easy and pleasant class.
Jesus Christ... I never thought I would dislike a Prof, but Mr. Pierre-Antoine succeeded. He made me absolutely hate politics, and his need to be constantly politically correct just hurt my head. His blatant teaching style is extremely unhelpful and boring Here's my advice: If you have a class with him, just drop it and take another one.
This guy ruined Politics and Globalization for me. He is extremely boring and bland. His teaching style just puts you to sleep, and when he answers questions, he completely misses the question and only ends up confusing you even more. I will never take a class with him again
The class wasn't what I expected at all, it was very boring, and felt really long too. No tests but there was a lot of writing to do, especially during the final. Good news is, if you follow his guidelines word for word without trying to get creative you'll do well in his class. But I still recommend not taking class with him if you have a choice.
Unclear with grading criteria, not helpful even when you take the initiative, unrealistic expectations for a 1st year course, long and boring lectures. I had to email him THREE times to get my final assignment grade weeks after the official deadline for grade revision. Avoid if possible
Dr Pierre Antoine is a good prof to take your politics course with. He tries to be funny to get u interested and it is cute seeing him trying to be funny. He is okay, and knows how to pronounce my name well. The only sad thing is that he doesn't reply emails aspa. Well, I don't blame him, he has a life aside teaching, it is not by force to reply.
Lectures not very stimulating but must admit his pps and the course is very well-organized. Assigned two 5page position papers and gives you the sources aka. no outside research needed. As well no midterm. Mad-crazy long exam but not ridiculously hard (defs not easy tho). Always stresses how important readings are but I never did them and was okay
He was a pretty good prof, but nothing special. He doesn't really answers questions very clearly, but if you talk to him outside of class you can probably get what you need. He provides really good feedback on assignments, but won't help much when you're actually writing them. His exam was the hardest I've written, with very vague questions.
He's a great prof but the exam was deadly. Not a lot of work really.
i never took politics in high school so i wasn't sure what to expect when taking this course but honeslty this prof made things so boring i am dropping POL1102. He must tell his TAs different criteria for assignments than he tell his tudents because no one in my class did well on assignments. if you have his as a prof, switch out if you can.
Very average professor. Solid lectures and assignments, but nothing special. He barely used the textbook, but the course was pretty easy. Won't get you interested in the subject matter, but you will get a clear idea of what to expect from other poli-sci courses in the future.
Excellent prof, take his class ! :D
There's a serious lack of communication between the prof and the TA, who seem to just communicate through emails... The grading criteria changes between the two so all assignments written for this course should actually be written to the TA's liking, which becomes hard because you never get an opportunity to meet them. Unclear, unprofessional.
I really enjoyed his lectures and would take his class again. He is encouraging and clearly cares about his students and will offer help, especially if you ask for it. He is a tough marker, but he's fair and as long as you follow the marking criteria, you will do well in his class. He's engaging and has a great sense of humour.
Show up to class because he adds a lot more information to his powerpoint slides (besides what is already posted on blackboard). Papers don't require attendance or reading the slides at all, but the exam you need to know the class material. Otherwise he is a typical professor who is there to teach and not to make class fun
The papers were easy marks in my opinion (makes up for 70% of the whole mark) and they don't need any readings done to complete them. Class attendance is NOT required, I only went to 2 classes, 2 discussion days (mandatory) and the final exam lol.
I took this class as an introduciton to Politcal Science and this prof read right off of the slides making attendence not mandatory. There is clear miscommunication between the TA and prof because the papers are generally marked incorrectly in comparison to the instructions. Finally, the final exam is extremly difficult. I would avoid this course.
I went to every single lecture for this class, and every time it was useless. His powerpoints have no substance, you cannot just copy down the powerpoint, you have to write what he says too. The problem is everything he says is hard to follow, and he does not talk super loud. He's a great guy, but not a great teacher. Avoid taking class with him!
I really disliked having him. He isn't very approachable and doesn't give his students the information that will help them pass the exam. He creates impossible exam layouts and doesn't test you prior to them. He lets all his work be done by TA's and his lecture slides are very cluttered and unorganized. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
utilise le mic svp
Was honestly a good class overall, I enjoyed the class material and I found he covered a good amount of basics for polisci students. The lectures could sometimes be a bit boring but usually, the topics he would cover were interesting enough if you enjoy politics. The final was easy and he doesn't grade a lot of things, DGD participation is a must.
Participation in the DGDs is important, they're held twice and count towards 10% of your grade. Otherwise, two 5-page essays and a final which consisted of 2 essays and 5 paragraph definitions. Prof is a nice guy and knows what he's talking about, but you can tell (and he has said directly to me) that he doesn't enjoy teaching this course.
Very boring lectures. I'm not a polisci student so maybe that's why they're so boring but don't need to show up and you will do just fine. Feel like he has potential but this class doesn't do him justice.
Good guy, cares about student success. Not his fault the class is boring.
Boring class, the prof has potential but cannot express it with this class. You do not need to attend...
It's a boring class, you do not need to attend. He had to cancel a number of classes and we understood why. You'd think he'd be a bit more sensible for the final exam but he was not. He gave us an 8-page take-home exam a week after the 15-page paper was due and the questions are really ambiguous. Do not ever take a class with him. I regret it.
He didn't give back any marks until the second last lecture. He forgot to register exams for access students so we all had to write our midterm a week late. He kept delaying giving back grades and then kept giving extensions on assignments. I ended up doing every assignment/exam within the final 2 weeks of the course. Id mention more if I had space
I thought this class was great. It could have been because I was really interested in the topic but I found the lectures engaging and the assignments very easy. Like others have said, we didn't received our marks really late but it was also a summer class so this might be different if you take it during the fall/winter. Overall, would recommend.
midterm is alright you have lots of options of questions to answer. research paper and take home exam is essays like 10 pages each, so lots of research and writing. the prof is just ok really. its such an average class. wouldnt avoid at all costs, but definitely rather take a different class.
Professor Pierre-Antoine is a fantastic example of someone who knows how to approach students with different learning styles. He tailors his lectures according to the subject matter and is always encouraging us to participate and discuss different ideas in a constructive way. He does not ask us to regurgitate material but instead asks us to THINK.
always posted lectures late, never had any clear instructions for ANY assignments, midterms or exam. sent an email with details that needed to be included for our midterm 6 HOURS BEFORE IT WAS DUE!!
Les lectures sont immenses et le contenu est très difficile a suivre. Je regrette d'avoir pris ce cours.
Lectures are very long and very boring. Really makes you hate the idea of politics and is the epitome of boring politics profs. Only midterm, research essay and a final to get marked on - NO grading criteria, all essay questions, dk your first mark until after the drop deadline, no live lectures to get a feel for his expectations Just don't bother
Lots of readings. Only grades on midterm, essay (split into two assignments worth 15% and 35%), and take-home exam. All essays. The course itself isnt difficult, honestly. Disorganized, posts late, lectures seem useless. Just read the powerpoints.
Don't listen to anyone in this comment section. Prof Pierre-Antoine was a very good prof. He was organized, understanding, and very clear in his lectures. He was always there to help (he set up office hours every week) and he makes a lot of "dad" jokes which were very funny to watch online. Highly recommend. Put in the effort in this class tho!
His videos are really good. Because of corona, I haven't spoken to him much but he has great TAs who are willing to video call if you have questions. You do read a lot though, but if you're interested by the subject you'll love his classes.
Mr. Pierre-Antoine is an extremely basic Prof. His Mid-term and final exam are both take-home which makes it easier due to Covid but they are very very very LONG. Get ready to write ALOT. The material is interesting but gets boring after a while.
He was respectful, knowledgeable and although always complained about receiving too many emails, he was available for questions and clarification outside class. I liked his exams and assignments essay format but they were a bit tough
He's a very good prof. Knowledgeable and always makes sure we understand the content. Exams are take-home, around 1200 words per essay which is fine. There's 2 per exam. You have a choice of topics and its fairly easy. Lectures are posted as videos. Only thing is he complains abt too many emails and would rather students join his office hours.
Lectures were really boring and unnecessarily long, readings were super long. If you have strong self discipline you'll be fine or else don't take it
hes honestly the most boring prof ive ever had. he assigns like 600 pages of reading aside from the textbook, but i never really read them and would just skim through to find info if i needed it for an exam. His exams are pretty easy, but hes so boring and monotone that his lectures are just painful. I almost switched major. Avoid him if you can.
this course was mandatory for me but it was honestly quite interesting and the professor was clear with what his expectations were. there was a midterm and a final, as well as two assignments/papers. none of the exams are multiple-choice questions.
A really good prof!! the tests are a little difficult but just study hard. Super understanding and supportive.
Not my favourite prof... Seems to have a lot going on in their life
The class content is very clear and simple. He organizes well his lectures, midterms and readings. We used a textbook that mainly helped for midterms. His midterms and final exam were papers, not tests with MCQ or short answers. He gave us 2-3 days to write it, and we had to answer 2 questions among 4-5 questions. His lectures can be monotone tho.
The exams were all take home exams. You had multiple days to write the exams. The readings were not too long and the textbook was straightforward. His classes were very interesting.
DPA is hands down the best prof I've had since coming to uni. He uses slide shows, is personable, makes sense, his examples and exams match his materials and he's all around just a great prof. If I could take him every year if I could because his approach towards the students actually makes you enjoy learning his content. Overall just a solid prof!
There is a lot of reading to do. The exams are take home exams and he gives you many days to complete them. The classes are interesting. I watched them on 1.5 speed.
His lectures are useless because he puts all of the important material in the textbook that is needed to read. Stuck reading and his lectures are just him reading off of slides.
nothing that he assigned was very clear, but he would get frustrated whenever students would ask questions to clarify about his very unclear assignments. we literally only had 4 things that we were graded on, a paper outline, a midterm, a final paper, and our final exam (all papers btw) so LOTS of writing and no room for mistakes.
He thinks 2500 words are short and it doesn't matter to answer each question with 1000 words. you are not allowed to use any external source but just several chapters of the textbook, anyway, everybody knows that textbook usually illustrates some concept and brief reason, how that support 1000 words essay? The knowledge is not hard, he does.
I took him in the fall semester of 2020. It was hard to watch the lectures because they were regularly over 90min and because it was recorded it was impossible to get in contact with other students. The projects are complicated but there were only 4. I managed to pass without watching lectures or doing readings but it wasnt easy, avoid if possible
This is the second time I've had Prof Pierre-Antoine and I have enjoyed both classes I have had with him. The content is easy to understand and the assignments are straight forward. In both classes I have finished at or above a 90 and have not found him to make his content extremely difficult. Would take again
Great prof! I don't know why anyone would say otherwise. One of the best profs I had in my 2021 fall semester!
honestly an amazing prof, surprised to see his reviews this low. his class had 4 assignments, including the midterm and exam. the first assignment is literally your outline for the final one so if you feel that his class load i to heavy you just have poor time management skills. He always has office hours where he can answer your questions.
Really good prof, was surprised to see his grading so low. He gives clear instructions on what he wants to be done in your work. Lectures are just a bit boring, I could never get myself to listen but as long as you're reading the textbook or have an understanding of politics you will ace this class.
I really liked the prof. Lectures were interesting (for the most part), very well spoken and organized. Class was made up of 4 written assignments, together totaling to around 7700 words. I can agree that the midterms are hard to stretch to the word count he wants, but definitely not a bad class, and definitely doesn't deserve this low rating
DPA is a good prof. Dull lectures, but assignments are pretty straightforward (and also common sense). A good class to work on your writing, since you end up writing nearly 8000 words. You can tell he is slightly apathetic about teaching but he is accessible and pretty fair. His rating is deserved but you don't need to avoid this prof's class.
DPA does't communicate assignment expectations clearly and writes lazy midterms/exams. i considered dropping poli sci altogether - his lectures were boring and never touched on actual political events that were happening in the world.
This prof almost made me switch out of my major. Many of the things he said were objectively incorrect, and his reception to feedback was 0. His was one of my only in person classes that semester and I couldn't even bring myself to go because I would have to listen to him there.
He's okay. Grades on assignments were released late (didn't receive our first mark until after midterm) and it's hard to get feedback on exams and essays. You have to be lucky with your TA as some are more communicative than others. I skimmed through lecture slides and the textbook for exams, it was simple enough. Good luck if you have him.
Will not take this prof again. Tries to say he can't share his opinion when asked yet does through his delivery of the course material. Skip his gender lecture if you don't want to listen to transphobic rhetoric. TA's take ages to grade things (like truly ages). Midterms are not always clear and many students had to stretch to make the word count
Loved the guy. You can tell he's very knowledgeable in his field. Take-home exams provided us with 4 prompts and we had to pick two to answer. Definitely need the textbook, he covers most of the material in class but the textbook goes into further detail and for the midterm and final you needed it. Super funny and nice, I recommend
He isokay, the usual professor who gives decently engaging lectures and expects a lot in return. He is not super available but somewhat clear in explaining things. The course structure is organized which helps when his exams are worth a lot. Take him if you actually need to and expect to write lengthy papers on simple concepts.
The prof was v respectful and knowledgeable. He tries to give unbiased political information and he explains v well. Only graded on midterm, exam, essay outline, and essay so everything Matters, but it's stress-free till you have to submit those. Get the textbook online cause you can word search and provide quotes for exams! Coursepack was a waste.
Prof is available and helpful in office hours and emails, but you gotta work for the credit. You need to get lucky w the TA's cause some of them are Tough graders and picky. The word-count is tough especially for first-year but you can def do it. Prompts are not hard but they're painful, you can use an external source and WATCH THE LEC RECORDINGS!
I read through the other reviews, but in the end DPA was a very good prof to me and even though I procrastinated horribly and waited to write my essay outline and research essay with about 1 day left, I still succeeded in the class. Graded pretty fairly and I received good feedback on my grades. If you like poli sci and want a challenge, take him.
Nice man. will give generous extensions. on the conservative side but overall non-bais and a kind.
I'm a first year and I found DPA to be a pretty good prof. The assignements weren't t0o crazy, the only thing that was a bit tough was reaching the word count for the midterms. Some of the midterm question weren't too difficult for the word count but some of them make you stretch for info.
Honestly, he is a great prof. His lectures content is very organized so no need to search thru zoom dates. The assignments can be a lot to write but it is not very hard. He is very caring and understanding too. However, the course depends on how lucky you get with a TA, as same essay format between students could get a diff grade because of the TA.
I've had this prof twice and I loved both classes. It's a lot of work, but it pays off and it's always enjoyable. He's understanding and cares about his students. The lectures are interesting with the occasional funny anecdote. I've only gotten grades above B with him and my best grade was an A-. Overall satisfied, but the textbooks are expensive.
I don't really get his low rating. Yeah the lectures were dry, but I still learned. Nice guy and pretty easy marker.
Professor Pierre-Antoine has been one of my favourite political science professors so far because he always comes to class prepared, is highly knowledgeable, and gives challenging content with an excellent use of examples and evidence. He is also very kind and respectful!
DPA's always respectful + prepared for class. Graded on 4 things, which is good w/ recorded lectures. Grading depends on TA; some are hard, and some are easy; his lectures are kinda slow. Had 2 textbooks (1 is impossible to find cheap). He's clear w/ his criteria and gives time to work on things; not hard to get an A if you understand the subject.
The class itself was organized. You only had to do an outline, essay, midterm and final. Instructions were clear and grading was quite fair (I was consistently under the word count and did fine, but I think it really depended on your TA). Lectures tended to be a little dry and tough to get through.
He really taught this course too difficult. The midterm, final exam, outline and essay add up to nearly 8,000 words, the requirement is too high for a freshman.
if your views don't align with his don't even bother taking his course. very unprofessional and biased prof, stated ridiculous opinions since the first day, do yourself a favour and never take a class with him.
Very good professor, the textbook he provides is very helpful for the research essay, the lecture content is a bit boring, but very basic. The writing requirements are very high, with a total of 4 assignments (including midterm and Final exam) of about 8,000 words. Get ready to write, and good luck!
idek this professor just sucks lol.
not a fan. his lectures are super boring and the 2000 word midterm and 2000 word final were super tricky and is 60% of your grade the rest is weighed on a 2500 word research paper. wouldn't recommend
A very normal prof. Lots of readings though. Sometimes he gets questionable when he talks about race and "identity politics" but otherwise solid
I really liked DPA's course! Some people complain about his political views and him being too "conservative"; however, as a political science student, it is important that you keep your mind open to differing schools of political thought. Make sure to start your assignments early, and go to office hours since DPA is always ready to help.
Boring lectures, hated responding to emails but refused to elaborate, required way too much writing for a first year course, expensive textbook, gave me advice on my essay outline and then removed marks for listening to his advice on the essay, just not a good teacher. Kinda a legend, though.
Nice dude. Class and lectures are organized, professor is very knowledgeable. However, lectures are often drawn out far more than necessary. Amount of writing is insanely high for a first-year course, requiring around 7000 words of writing when all assignments are put together, so get ready for that.
DPA's lectures are extrutiatingly dry and boring and it was hard to focus since he goes on LONG tangents about NOTHING. But he is somewhat of an easy grader. I learned everything from reading the textbook which was mandatory but informative for an intro textbook. Only take this class if mandatory do not take it as an elective!!!
He is a nice guy, but lectures can go on very long. His assignments are not difficult, if you take his course I suggest reading all of the material. it will help :)
Lectures were strung out and boring. I was marked by the TA for all assignments except the final exam. Got A+ on all of them... except the final exam. There were so many writing assignments around 7500 words combined. Exams had nothing to do with content relating to the book or in class... very unclear what he is looking for.
As many have said, there is a high word count which is super weird for a first-year to be honest, especially to give to a lot of kids who did high school during COVID where the teaching of basic essay writing might have been limited or non-existent. Nice to talk to 1:1 but I think he hates his job.
Great prof! Thought his material was well-thought out, and I'd definitely take another class with him. Tip: Ensure you attend the lectures, take notes, and ask questions!
The most average prof you will ever have. Definitely not my favorite but also not the worst. Very solid 3/5. Buy the textbook and do the readings and you will do ok; sometimes his assignment info is unclear but he's really not bad for a required course. Would avoid for electives tho
Midterms are ridiculously two questions, 1000 words each mandatory. NOT ok. terrible exams and excessive amounts of reading. DO NOT take this course for time sake. hes a nice guy, however, he give terrible work assignments.
I think he was a solid professor, I personally enjoyed the stuff he taught, he broke things down pretty well. He was very straightforward. Read the textbook, attend lectures, you'll do well. Essays had high word counts though. I believe I learned the basics of poli sci through him. But if you're not interested in it, do not take this course.
The professor is nice but the lectures were unnecessarily long and not dynamic. The grading criteria are unclear for the assignments and there is a lot of reading that is never expanded on in the class
He's a good prof, but outside of that not much else. The prof does give good feedback and will reply to emails as well. However his lectures were quite underwhelming and went way off topic from what was on the slides. Assessed on only an essay outline, an essay, and a final exam. Not the worst prof, but if you can avoid him I'd suggest doing so.
He is really understanding and is truly passionate about political science. He is reasonable and puts effort in his teachings. I had him for POL1101 too, so I decided to take this class with him too since the first one went so well. I like poli sci so I liked his class, but those who find the subject boring will think he's boring too.
He was a good teacher for this course
He was a great teacher for this course
Decent professor, you'll have to do a ton of reading outside of class in order to keep up with his lectures. His deadlines have tight turn-around times. Good luck if you're taking DPA as a professor.
expects too much considering this is a first year course..
Professor Pierre-Antoine is a bad professor. He doesn't teach he reads off slides. My TA also gave me 2 different grades for the same work and when I e-mailed him about it he didn't even answer my question he just wrote things that meant nothing.
DPA is quite boring in his lectures but he isn't terrible- just makes all the points his slides do so you don't really have to listen. He's nice when you have questions and always answers questions in class. Not too much writing but the textbook reading can be a bit much.
This guy is painfully average. He reads off the slides and does not teach anything. He is monotone and seems as if he lacks passion for teaching. I guess he's a nice guy? I don't really have any compliments for him, he just seems disengaged and bored of his own class.
I found DPA to be a good professor. You learn a lot about politics in this introductory course. I found he really taught me the basics needed for political science. Lots of reading to do (50-60 pages per week) but definitely helps you in the long run. The majority of your grade comes from a research essay (and other small components) and an exam.
DPA is a very kind prof. Lectures can be boring, and textbook readings are heavy, but your grade is based on a research essay that has nothing to do with the lectures, and a final. I did not do a single reading and I did fine.
Look. POL1101 is a difficult class. Assignments are weighted to an extreme and it's hard to determine which parts of the lecture are necessary to learn for assignments. DPA gave average lectures but has trouble captivating his audience. He often digs deeper into tough material when the class attention is not with him. Might take again if needed.
Professor Pierre-Antoine gives really boring lectures and tends to go off-topic. He often falls behind schedule. This class requires an incredible amount of reading. Expect to read around 100 pages a week. 70% of your grade hinges on two assignments, one of which is a research paper and one of which is a take home exam based on the readings.
70% of your grade is based on an essay topic of your choice that has nothing to do with the class. I didn't go to a single class nor do any readings until the exam season and I was fine, that being said manage your time around exam season well and you'll be able to handle catching up on a semesters worth of work in a few days.
This man is SO hard to get a hold of good luck if u have any need to contact him. Answers emails after weeks you can not depend on him for help on anything. The course material only mattered for the final and you could do all the readings at that time. The course is super weirdly structured but easy.
Awesome guy
Looks like he hates his job.
Only graded on an essay (topic+outline+essay), and a take-home final, so it was super easy. Lectures and readings are boring, long, and nearly useless though.
Alright.
His midterm are so hard compared to his expectation and the time we have for the exam. Also he has an inflated ego which brings a bad climate in the class. Personally because of his high expectation without any precision about homeworks he gaves and his ego that make us feel like we are nothing for him, i will not take him again for my next class!
Great professor, although during lectures he does sound bored and unamused by what he's teaching. He does make up for it with easy gradings and easy projects. He gives an essay and final based off the textbook. The slides aren't that important and you don't need to show up. He is also very accessible outside of class and friendly.
Lectures can be dry, but the workload is manageable. Grades rely heavily on an essay and a take-home final, so attending class isn't crucial. Unstuck ai helped me breeze through the readings and prep for the exams.
He doesn't just teach in the traditional sense, he presents knowledge in a way you fall in love with the knowledge and remember that knowledge just like one remember's his first love. I encourage everyone to take him, and if you take him take the most advantage of his knowledge. For you will be in the presence of a virtuous man.
DPA is the sweetest prof ever. He will always help you if needed, and answers emails quickly. He does care about his students and ensures that they learn.
he deserves such a better rating. ive had him twice now he is the best professor, so kind, so understanding and sooooo fair.
He's so great at grading; I had him twice now, and I didn't have any difficulties with him.
His lectures are extremely boring but the assessments are fair. One essay, which was broken into 3 parts: the topic (5%), the outline (25%), the essay (40%). There is also a final exam worth 30% which is take home and 2 questions of 1000 words each. The grading in this course is fair and the feedback given on assessments is very useful.
I had high hopes for the educational value and content of this course, unfortunately DPA didn't have much to bring in terms of providing engaging lecture content to compliment the textbook. I felt like asking for a refund as he didn't seem interested in engaging us to learn more about the topic...
Nicest man alive, most horrifically boring and mind numbingly soul killing class i have ever taken. By the halfway mark half the class has usually left. I have never wanted to melt into the floor and become human pudding more then I do during this mans lectures. Skip the lectures, read the slides, dont take the class. God bless!!
DPA is kind and definitely really cares about the topics he's teaching however the lectures are so incredibly boring especially online. There's only 4 things that are graded; 3 surrounding one essay, plus a take home final. The assignments are interesting despite being more or less completely unrelated to the actual course content.
Kind of a boring class, but the assignment and final are not super difficult.
Course is easy enough, lectures are dull and unhelpful. Biggest issue was by the time the final exam is due, you have 25% of your mark back. Very dependant on final exam and final essay, all due right at the end of course, so no way to know how well you're doing. The man is nice, but boring, readings were unimportant until final take home exam.
This is my second year having DPA has a prof. He is so boring. I fell asleep when I had him in person and I stopped attending the lectures online. They were so bad. He has a bad attitude, and does not seem to like his job. if you have a choice, do not take him!
Genuinely horrible professor. His lectures are very boring and have no relevance to the assignments. From what I have seen, he is a nice grader, but I wouldn't know since its the beginning of the second term and HE STILL HAS NOT GIVEN ME BACK MY GRADES FOR MY ASSIGNMENTS FROM OCTOBER!!! (let alone the final) Stay away! PS. He does not answer emails
umm i did not attend any lectures and passed with an A. it consists of an essay and a take-home exam. You can do this course even if you don't know anything about politics. However, the prof is difficult to listen to but classes are not mandatory. So take it if you don't mind writing. Easy to pass but difficult to participate unless u enjoy POL.
Quite possibly the most boring lecture experience I have ever had. The professor only reads off the slides and provides no useful input. By the time I had finished the first semester, I only had 30% of my grade back in the class.
Feedback is vague and usually unhelpful. Has a poor command of technology. Is not a captivating lecturer (not helped by the fact that the class was held virtually). Rambles constantly off-topic to the point that it's a waste of time to sit through the entire lecture when you could teach yourself the content in half the time using slides/textbook.
The lectures were very dry and the actual material in the lectures wasn't relevant until the final exam. His grading criteria was very unclear and frustrating and it took him an eternity to grade things. It is two weeks into the new semester and I only just got my grade back.
The online class was ok, you should attend the lectures but I barely did and it was fine. I think his marking is fair and assignments are easy, only thing was it took long to get your grade back. He often gets side tracked in his lectures so honestly wasn't that helpful, I recommend just reading the slides.
He was very... moody to say the least in my opinon but overall hes ok. I would recommend another teacher but hes not the worst. Mostly reads off of the slides
The TAs marked easily. DPA was very uneustic and quite monotone, with the lectures typically going off-topic. You will get bored.
Three essays for this class.
The lectures are information-heavy, so taking notes for this class was practically taking the entirety of the transcript. In lectures, I was more worried about whether I missed information than whether I even understood what was happening. His exam is only worth 30%, but prepare to study 300 pages of notes. Don't even bother with the readings.
I had a great experience with him, 1 outline for a research project, then a final research project and a final exam. The exam was directly based off of what he discussed in lectures, no surprises. He recorded all classes so attendance not mandatory, and he was thorough in his explanations. Great feedback on assignments too. Would take him again!
I had a DPA for POL2504 online during the summer (condensed version). He was a great professor who explained very well. He even extended the deadline for our final paper since we hadn't received our grade for the previous assignment. His final was no surprise; I'd even say it was easier than I anticipated. I would take this professor again!
Boring lectures however easy instructions. Take home final for us, plus a final essay which was not too bad. Do not buy his coursepack, it is really not worth it. You can even get away with no textbook tbh
He has the charisma of a fart. His lectures are difficult to follow and barely coherent at times. Don't even bother trying to take notes since he rambles so much about things not even related to politics. His political bias BLEEDS into his lectures. But he got a few laughs out of me, and he seems like he cares about his students.
DPA is a good prof very knowledgeable in this field. He sprinkles a couple of sassy comments and stories in his lectures which keeps you engaged. He is accessible outside of class and is pretty good about doing grade revisions / explaining why you got a mark. The readings are heavy (you can probably just go to class and be fine tho).
Every time I was walking to class, I would pray a car would hit me so I didn't have to go. The worst and most uncharacteristic prof. Get ready to sleep in his classes because I can guarantee you won't be able to hear him.
DPA is super chill and your garde is almost completely based off of your research essay which can be either really good or really bad idk. He's super nice but he's also super boring. Don't be scared if you miss a class because you can just go through the slides on your own and it's not too bad. Really nice guy and I would recommend!
Lectures are so boring it made me consider switching my major. DPA talks in the most monotone voice and likes to ramble about unrelated stuff and I think I know more about his daughter than politics at this point. He is wildly unhelpful when asking questions and will not clarify/ help you. Do not take this class unless you have to
Not a particularly interesting professor but not a terribly hard grader. Very unremarkable course. I skipped more than half the lectures.
DPA is not a bad professor, however, he takes very long to mark assignments (it's December and I have only received 20% of my marks back). People say he's boring, but it's literally a politics class. He didn't give us any midterms which I liked, however I was kind of hoping he would give us a final take home exam just like he did in recent years.
honestly i wasnt going to rate this prof but at this point I gotta warn yall. Quite partisan, Very critical, Slow grader. Going into final unknowing if you will get the credit as he has not marked the last 2 assignments. The final is quite complicated to understand... 2 essay questions and formated as such but no research or ideas of the questions.
Avoid this prof. He is insanely boring and monotone and literally hasn't changed his teaching style or grading criteria since 2007. Rude and unhelpful during his office hours. When you ask him about a grade you get, he'll say "I don't know, I didn't mark it". BUT THEN HE DOESN'T PROVIDE YOU WITH CONTACT INFO FOR YOUR CORRECTOR.
Lectures not the funnest, actually made me fall asleep a few times. The assignments were ok and the exam was ok
idk what to say besides monotone.
Never felt so bored out of my mind. At least the work was easy.
