His paper is way too difficult. He says if you go to a CUNY school you will not get into law school. He is very negative. Don't take him unless you enjoy being unhappy.
warning!!!!!!!!!!!! please dont ever take this professor. he has no life and he'll make sure that you wont have it either. his tests are hard, paper is hard and it's going to be a miracle if you pass his class with "c".
this professor is horrible, he was going to give me a D+ and had the nerve to say that I was a good student. My G.P.A is 3.3 and I am a Junor. I asked him why and he did not give me a response. he is a hard ass. dont take him: anybody...
easy professor .. if u listen to him
OK,THIS IS COLEGE PPL AND IF U THINK HE'S HARD U AIN'T SEE NOTHING YET. HE'S UR BASIC GOV PROF, WITH EXAMS, PAPER, AND CASE BRIEF'S WHICH ARE DUE WITH OUT NOTICE SO DO THEM ANYWAY, HE'S A TOUGH GRADER, BUT HE'S FUNNY AND HELPFUL IF U ASK.
He expects as much as a college professor should from seniors. A very interesting course; do the readings, participate, prepare for the exams and you'll do fine.
I think he is a good teacher if you give him a change. Like in any class, show up and speak up, even if you have no clue as to what you are saying, at least he will see that you are trying. I b.s.ed the whole semester and got a B.
He is the only professor, who I have learned something from at John Jay. If you show up to class and do the briefs, it shouldn't be problem to pass
You will be asked to brief 2-3 cases for every class. Participation is not required but recommended for good grade. His exams are hard but he allows two 4x6 index cards of info to be braught into the exam. Attendance is taken. 3 Noncumulative exams.
will brief u to death, every class at least3 to 4 briefs. tests are ridiculous, and the final paper will take you over the top. hard as heck..u will be at a loss..listen plan him out of your schedule. look for someone more fair and less cynical
Sarcastic sense of humor. Expects students to work as if they are in college. Great professor.
I dropped it!

This professor can be described as a serpent in the midst just waiting to attack and kill you. Basically, if you want to have a clear understanding of the coarse, do not take it with Pinello; everyone knows he's difficult.
professor Pinello is not as hard as people make him seem, he only gives 3 test and you are allowed to use 2 big index cards..his very knowlegeable on the American system of government..basically, he can answer any questions asked..if you want to go to graduates school, definitely take him..
Very unhelpful, mean, and vindictive. I felt frustrated during every class. He obviously does not know how to teach or to advise.
real good professor with lots of understanding. he will answer every question you have to the best of his ability. only real man and women take his class......if you fall off in from the start, you are DEAD MEAT BUDDY!......
Absolutely one of the best professors at JJC! He is witty, cynical, brilliant. He is great at what he does. However, if you work and go to school f/t and did not have straight As to begin with, you will have a hard time in his class. I know smart kids that flunked out or got poor grades, so if you are in the class-take it seriously or drop out.

You take him and your gpa will surely regret it.
It is obvious that the professor is the one leaving these self praising comments. anyone who sat thru his class would testify that he is truly awful.written assignments on par with a 400 level course -if you can avoid him,do it. a posting last semester tried to warn me and i ignored it thinking the student was just lazy- boy was i sorry.VERY UNFAIR
allot of reading is required in order to pass his class. Gives out case briefs everyday and collects them randomly. if your upto studying for hours and acquire great amount of knowledge about law take him.

This professor expects everyone to agree with his ideology. His quizzes had nothing to do with the topic. Instead of learning court cases and history of gays, you had to pay attention to the color of the shirt's worn by the people. He is HORRIBLE. You will learning NOTHING!!! STAY AWAY!!
alot of work, alot of reading and alot of lectures on his part. reading is a must and its a killer. i do not recommend him if you have no interest in government
If you can't meet the challenge, then I strongly advise you not to take this course. He'll let you know that himself. As for me, I learned a whole lot-it was definitely worth it, especially if you're an LGBT student.
you have to read if you dont you wont pass. lots of pop quizzes. drops your lowest grade. I got an A so its not impossible
Run don't walk AWAY from this guy if you value your GPA! I think he likes for people not to do well. When most of the class did well instead of being happy he made the next quiz hard. Way too much work (reading and quizzes every class). BTW I have a 3.95 GPA so I know how to put work in. DON'T TAKE HIM if you can help it!!
RUN AWAY IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA
Pinello is a great professor. There is heavy reading and you'll brief 28 cases which will literally drive you crazy. Only the strong and motivated students survive this class. I survived, lol!!!!
SO boring! He uses a microphone to speak in a tiny classroom because he has something in his vocal cords. gave a pop quiz every other class on the reading so if you didnt do the reading youre screwed! only plus is he let us fill 2 index cards w/ notes to use on the "official test" (not the pop quizzes)
There is some possitve comments here and im really impressed that there is (just because my class had about 30 students and about 7 are left. Professor Pinello KNOWS and TEACHES his material very well. College has evolved from a competitive institution to an "I want to just get by and graduate" instutution. Whats said is that professors actually
(spell error meant to say) what sad is that professors actually support this laziness and reward students with an A. Pinello actually makes you work for an A which is the way that it should be. I myself am interested in going to law school. At a point in the class, students started complaining as to why the test is so hard. He dropped the cases tha
were assigned for that day and explained the "method to his madness". In the beginning of the course he asked students if they were interested in law school and 80% of the class said yes. He then gave statistics and information pertaining law school admissions. He stated that he does not think john jay student are well prepared (since only 32% john
jay students make it ;1 out of 3 applicants) I left rutgers and went to John jay because i thought since it is a criminal justice based school, it would be more beneficial to go there. Once he gave this information, I was kind of diappointed but at the same time it motivated me to want to do better.Overall if you want to get your monies worth then
His class is not difficult but there is a lot of reading. He is quite boring though, kills the passion of politics, mostly just lectures. You do learn so if you are interested in a challenging/slightly boring prof go with him!
His class was challenging but if you're seriously interested in law, you will love it. Briefs every class, collected randomly, by the end you'll be a pro. He explains everything very clearly and you can use two big notecards on the (non-cumulative) tests. I recommend him for serious students.
He said it was not going to be easy & he meant it. Exams are hard, 25 multiple choice questions, but you must know All the cases. His methods of grading is not fare, because he randomly collects & grades few briefs, but if you don't have it u get 0, regardless of the rest of the briefs. I wish he knew what is costs students to do each brief.
He is a professional.Does NOT CARE about students' issues. He warns you it is to be hard & it is!Average grade is C.3 exams & briefs are graded. Corrects every single sentence, claims students are not ready for Law schools. I learned a lot, & to my surprise even though he assigns about 50 cases, I remember most of them. Think twice before taking him
He assigns a lot of cases,& it's time consuming. At the begining it took me hours to analyze each case but now I read it once and it's clear. I am thankful to him for that, though I am sure this class will ruin my GPA. I had health issues,& failed the first exam. I'm doing my best but its not going to change much.Either study hard,or don't take him!
This professor gets on my last nerve! He is not understanding AT ALL. My aunt had past away and I had to go to another state for her funeral and to be with my family. I missed 5 classes because of this. He said he was sorry for my lost but my absences due to death in my family can't be excused. Overall, DONT take him unless U want your GPA to drop
He assigns two books in which one was written by him. You MUST read it because he gives a quiz every single day based on the books. The books are So boring and I was not interested in reading them. He gives a paper that's based on a movie you have to watch, he's not a fair grader.
He gives a final paper which is 15 pages long. You have to link the cases that are assigned to the two books he assigned. It's very difficult. I do good in all my classes, I like professors that are strict because I like to work for my A but hes just not understanding and I think he favors the men in class more than women, if you know what I mean
Alright. He gives 3 tests, all 25 questions each, and assigns cases everyday. This class is a LOT of work. And I'm not one of those students who complains about a little work; I actually do a lot. He is strict with grading but he knows a lot. Take this class seriously. I was hoping for a better grade btw lol
This professor is very helpful and he tries to understand the materials. He is HARD and does not care about women or students in general. he makes his class very hard with his cases briefs everyday. Stay away from this professor ruindes your GPA, your Experience in POL, And will ruined your life.
He is hard. Gives a lot of cases, I got B- & of course my GPA dropped, but I praise him for everything I learned in the class. You'll learn how to brief cases, what is important in the case, how to conncet relevant cases, and how the Constitution with its amendments can be interpreted. Also why does court fluctuates from time to time.I'dtakehimagain
If you value your GPA, don't bother taking this teacher. He assigns way too many reading that will just take up too much of your time.
I dont know what people are talking about. I got an easy A in the class, the case briefs do get a little overwhelming but in the end, you will know how to brief cases. Also, the test is graded on a curve so its not impossible.
Do not be fooled by the index cards allowed on exams! his tests are very difficult even with the cards filed out. Do not miss a second of class, you will miss a lot. Other than that, he knows his stuff and you will learn if you pay attention and take notes. Notes and HW will allow you to pass the class. His homeworks will become easy in no time.
WHAT A MISERABLE PERSON. HE WILL MAKE YOU CRY! HE HAS NO HEART AND IF ANYTHING, JJAY SHOULD FIRE HIM. he's negative, miserable person that hates women! and will RUINDE YOUR GPA!! RUN AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR.YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING.
Do not take his class. pop quizzes every two days on a forty page reading and exams every three weeks. Doesn't give good notes and you have to buy 5 different books
do not take this professor. pop quiz every two to three day on 25 page reading and exams every three weeks. doesn't give good notes
I took his class 2 years ago. Currently I am 2L in Law School. If you are considering Law School, his class discussions are similar to Law School class discussions. Also material covered is very relevant to Family Law in Law School. He is a tough professor but there is no reason not to do well in his class. I got A- and he wrote me a recomd letter.
Not everyone can be a lawyer. I am a first year law student at MSU College of law. I am so glad I took his class. A lot of dumb kid who should not have been in college took his class and failed. If you want to be a lawyer, then take his class seriously. He's a smart guy, but tough.
Very Intelligent man! But he's a horrible professor.Wish I couldve dropped this class. He gave pop quizez all the time and was not willing to ask questions outside of class. He's a very hard grader, if you want a challenge take his class.
Prof. Pinello challenges you to do well. He can be condescending at times. He started really tough but eased up by the end of the semester. He wants to prepare you for tougher road ahead especially if you plan to go to law school.
This Professor is very hard and does not care about your grade. If you don't read then you will fail all the quizzes and exams. Do yourself a favor and don't take him.
He's literally a GPA killer. He treats students like they are in law school. He quizzes you everyday, midterm, and a final. He's going to make you read every single chapter in the book, plus blackboard readings. And make sure to read every words and commas in the text because he will quiz you on them. In general, he's very unfair to students
DON'T TAKE HIM!!!! GPA killer. Quizzes everyday, tests are tough. For 101 level course he teaches as if its 400 level. AVOID HIM!!!
Tough Professor treats the class like its a law school class. Gives pop quizzes almost everyday, the readings are long, the exams are tough as well. The projects are no fun had us go sit in court rooms and observe the proceedings which was annoying and really time consuming. And was rude and condescending. Would not take again. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Honestly if you want to go to law school he actually might be a good professor fro you because he teaches like its law school. But if being honest with yourself here you know you're a lazy student dont take him; he quizzes basically every class and each quizz has on average 9-10 questions on every single chapter
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! GPA KILLER!!! VERY UNREASONABLE AND INCONSIDERATE! this man forgets that stuff happens. somewhere along the line he lost his humanity....
If you know you don like to read, do not take this class. ( first day there was a pop quiz and quickly caught off guard) Quiz EVERYDAY and the readings are one whole chapter( 45 pages average) he doesn't get that not everybody is going to law school. Highly inconsiderate of your time. If you look fora challenge take this, if not do not bother.
In Pinello's class you either going to memorize all you read or you wont pass... Heavy overflowing readings for every class. Do you like to feel stupid? Go ahead, enjoy Pinello's class.
I will never take this profesor again. I was into it in the beggining but quickly learned that it does not matter. Professor knows a lot, books are fantastic, but the format of quizes and exams is insane. Nothing is clear there. He loves to trick and twist the questions so you don't pass. And he enjoys that. Ask for help and he will put you down.
Do not take!!! He doesnt concider students as humans. Not plesant when you ask for help. He thinks it's a law school and all of as should master the material. If you need help, sorry, you have to already know and understand before u take the class.
Don't take! He makes you work hardest and you still wont pass his confusing quizes and exams. Whats the point to confuse and discourage your students?
Don't take, i work hard but not sure if i pass the class.
Stay Away.
Nightmare. I lost my motivation and interest early in the semester because of unfair grading and confusing questions on quizzes that made me wanna quit this class. No help from professor either. He doesnt care when his students ask for help.
Workload is alot but worth it bc you will learn SO much about the subject that is taught. This class will challenge you. The only thing that I do agree w/ other reviews is that some questions on pop quizes are rather trivial than about the actual content of what is being read. Still, hes so passionate so the lectures are never boring.
Every class includes anywhere from 15-50 pages of reading that there is a,ways a chance of getting a very specific "pop" quiz on. There are not many lectures, instead the classes are based off of specific questions the students come up with regarding the readings from that day. For a 200 level course, the amount of work required is more like a 400.
Absolutely horrible. Avoid him at all costs and withdraw immediately if you have him. He expects doctor level work from his sophomore - junior level students. Prepare for a quiz single day that's based on 50 pages of reading in one night. In other words, worst professor ever.
DO NOT t take his class! worst professor!
Do not take! I was warned by several teachers to avoid his class. He has ridiculous and unrealistic expectations. Impossible quizzes everyday, including the first! Avoid avoid avoid
Sooooo many pop quizzes on specific things in the textbook , a lot of people would do poorly on his quizzes so he would always curve them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you have time to read the excessive Readings he gives and love pop quizzes everyday.
Get ready to memorize your reading he will ask what quote someone said, the littlest things are ask. You dont learn, you memorize
Professor Pinello was probably the most difficult professor I have ever had, harder than my senior seminar class. For a 200 level class, he gives you material to read that is nearly impossible to comprehend. There is a quiz in EVERY class. The material is not appropriate at all for a 200 level undergraduate course. Save your GPA and DON'T TAKE HIM!
This Professor just talks you to sleep. So much information that you space out. Does not take questions only at the end of lecture. I would never ever again take him.
Pinello is the most inconsiderate professor I've ever taken. Doesn't care that we're in a global pandemic and students are facing external challenges. Has no reagard for the fact students take more than his class. I have never left a review on this site before, but he's literally terrible. Avoid at all costs. I'd never take him again.
Pinello might be THE rudest professor I've ever had. He is not helpful when asked questions, he's sassy and disrespectful towards students. Lots of reading with NO lectures. It's been a self-taught class. Harsh and critical feedback, not constructive criticism - straight up demeaning. Tests are crazy specific, no study guides. SAVE YOURSELF.
Horrible. Avoid. Mean.
He is not that bad! A lot of these reviews are so negative. He will work with you to do your best. Was able to learn a lot in his course!
We had a pop quiz every single class and we were only given a minute for each question. Most times the timer ran out and this was very frustrating. He really does not show much sympathy at all take his class at your own risk
One of the Rudest professors I have taken in college so far. He is very inconsiderate. He is never ready to understand students' problems. Pop quizzes EVERY SINGLE DAY extremely hard class. Take him at your own risk.
This man does not care about you or your feelings. Take him at your own risk. Very inconsiderate. TRUST THE REVIEWS!!!
I didnt look at the reviews before taking him. I SHOULDVE!! His quizzes are unreasonable. Tough grader. Doesnt care to help the students.
The worst professor Ive ever had in my entire college experience rude condescending and just plain disrespectful a quiz every class that really has nothing to do with his lectures he will shut you out of a quiz or test for no reason he cares nothing about his students if you want to keep your sanity I suggest you take someone else
It was a 200 level course that he treated like a graduate level. It's almost as if he thinks his classic is the most important one that anyone is going to take. Avoid taking this class for as long as you possibly can.
A lot of reading. But if you're thinking about law school, he is the prof you'll ask for a recommendation letter. 3 hrs per each assigned reading got me good grades. a lot of notes from the reading. Writing, editing and editing got me an A with him. ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. smart, nice, and tough grater from the outside but always fix grades
Pr. Pinello is honestly not bad as everyone in the comments says he is. Yes, they're a lot of reading that he will randomly quiz you on. But he does warn students about it as he demonstrates his note-taking book and he wasn't lying when he says it's a lot. But he is nice and responds very quickly as well. Stay focused and read and you'll be fine
honestly this class really did stress me out but it was worth it in the end. the pop quizzes were definitely stressful but in total there were only 8 quizzes, he dropped the lowest two grades, and stopped giving quizzes towards the end. he gave legal cheat sheets for tests. there's semester long project. just read & follow his instructions.
The quizzes are not pop. It's every class and readings are 50 pages long. His quizzes were not easy to pass quiz. I dropped the class my first week because his way of teaching is taking questions for the first 20 mins of class, and giving you a quiz every class (literally every class ). I dropped it
It's important to point out that his class is for students who want to go to law school. He makes sure to warn you of this and gives very clear rules early on (even asks you to drop if you don't like it). Unfortunately, a lot of CUNY students don't make it into law school. He will challenge you but it will prepare you for your future.
he gives pop quizzes every single day you go to his class so avoid this class as long as you can or take another professor he will consume all your time and then it won't be worth it. and more if you work avoid him at all cost.
I want to sta
don't take this class if you know you're a lazy student, you will not do well. there are pop quizzes every class (but die down toward the end of the semester), 3 exams, and 1 written court observation. he's a strict professor but very informational and has high expectations for his students. If you're on a law school track, take the class.
Let me start off by saying that this professor cares for his students. But he literally gives a pop quiz every day you come into class and he gives you about 2-3 hours worth of reading twice a week. He makes you spend all your time on his class selfishly, not allowing us to work on our others. He gives WAY to much work. The reading is good though.
He spent alot of class literally taking questions, however he barely actually answers the questions, then starts rambling for 20 minutes. I have never actually sat in a class knowing I was going to fail in the beginning of the semester. If I checked rate my professor when I was making my schedule, you'd best believe that I wouldn't have picked him
If you're a student who enjoys stress and doubt, then take this class. But if you care so much about your time management and GPA, don't take him.
It's a shame to see how misguided and bitter some of these reviews are. Pinello is an excellent instructor. However, it's important to note that his class isn't a cakewalk. If you're not up for a challenge, this isn't the class for you. If you do the readings, ask questions, and prepare appropriately for assessments, you shouldn't have any issues.
The hate isn't fair. This is COLLEGE, not high school. Yes, it's definitely one of the most intense experiences I've ever had. But the man knows his stuff. I wouldn't even say he's particularly nitpicky when it comes to grading. It's just a lot of work. Luckily everything is well connected. Definitely isn't a GPA booster, but it's worth it.
With this professor be very careful unless you know what you are dealing with don't take him. This professor does random pop quizzes and grades starting from a hundred and gradually lower the grade based on assignment submitted by hand and via brightspaces other links. Also be advised everything with his class is based off the textbook.
Be prepared to read and take notes. He has a pop quiz every week and the quiz is always about the assigned reading . The questions are mostly specific like who said "insert quote" or what does this "insert latin term" mean in multiple choice. Like for quiz 1 he asks for specifics like what is public law or what is stare decisis
Do not listen to the low ratings, most of them are students that think school should be a cakewalk where you can just walk in, take attendance, and be on your phone. No homework but quiz every class and tests are really specific but doable. Very rewarding if you succeed in this kind of setting.
His grading system is heavily based on testing. He did offer extra credit to boost your final grade by at most 10%, but his class is based on 10 pop quizzes (25% total) and three exams worth 25% each (75% total).
Be ready for quizzes in almost every class at the beginning of the semester. Overall grade based on four components quizzes and three exams. Be ready for some questions on the quizzes to be specific, like "what name didn't appear in the reading?" He has made comments regarding whether we should be in this career, but dont let that discourage you.
so much reading and my brain has been fried cant even spel anymre
3 exams and pop quizzes are what ur whole grade is based on. While the material was interesting, there was so much reading that at times, I didn't really retain a lot of information. Do take notes of the readings and be ready for the quizzes. He offers extra credit twice, each worth up to 5 extra points and 5 extra credit questions on the final.
