Great teacher!!!! Take his class you will learn a lot and he makes math fun, who would have thought that's possible???
he probably thinks its funny that he's marked "hot"! Good teacher. He needs to use blackboard though.
hard and fast paced. must know review material very well because he won't spend anytime covering it. just a few problems and its off to the next one. take advantage of S.I. if provided.
Moved too fast, classroom examples much easier than homework and what showed up on test. If you take him, be prepared to use the ASC. According to him the material in 1150 is review from 1100.
Cool, nice, and down to earth teacher, BUT his class was prob. the most difficult class Ive ever taken. not an easy grader nor is flexible. Gives a ton of homework and collects it every week or so. Test are pretty straight forward but are also very difficult. Only extra credit he gives is on tests and its only like 2 problems and they r impossible t
He is the only math teacher i have had that has been so helpful and easy to ask questions. His class isn't a walk in the park but he does his best to make you understand the material and get you ready for the next math class.
Beginning of the semester he said he "doesn't make robots", he breaks down formulas so it's a reasoning process. Lots of homework, but his tests prepare you well for the final. He tries to meet ppl where they are and know what they need/what they're saying. He's also very easy to get ahold of bc he's wicked fast on the e-mail. Good guy!
Don't be scared at the fast paced start. I freaked at first because he was moving FAST, but he said he'd slow down once he got to new material and he did :) A+ teacher
His class moved way to fast! He moves to fast through the material, he doesn't give you a change to even think about what you just learned! Crams way to much in a 4 hour class, note packets were easier to understand. AND you never even leave early. He stays till the end of class every night! Would not take him if your a slower learner at all!!!
Do yourself a favor and look for someone else! Will not break down things he expects you too know from intermediate algebra even though each campus uses its own books. He holds you until the last tick of the clock even if that means starting a new chapter. He gives only one example per concept and than expects you to know it back and forth on exams
PLEASE IF YOU ARE A SLOW LEARNING DEALING WITH NUMBEROUS NUMBER OF EQUATIONS AND NOT GOOD AT TAKING TEST DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER HE MOVES WAY WAY WAY TO FAST NO TIME TO REVIEW B4 NEXT SECTIONS.SLOW LEARNERS DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think he's a great teacher. He's very clear and enthusiastic. I think the best thing about him is that when people are utterly lost, he tries really hard to get them in the right place and does not get mad or give snarky comments when people ask silly questions. He understands that math is hard for some people and does not judge them.
DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This teacher blames all the work he gives on "It's required by the department for me to teach this" which is bull. He has yet to develop a teaching mind of his own. And his final exam, god no way, it was 17+ pages!!! And the homework he gives is way to much to just be getting a max of 10pts per homework.
Don't make the same mistake I did by taking this guy's class. I'm trying to save you. This guy gives to much work for you to only earn 10pts per assignment, and his final exam isn't worth double or anything you'd expect a final to be worth; it was only 50pts more than his regular tests. Moves to fast and no help for the non math genius' out there.
Don't take this class. I began this class along with a bunch of other students but by the middle of the semester, the # was cut in half. Students realize that this guy requires way to much. His homework is to much, his lecture notes don't match up with the book to help you on studying, and his exam was only worth 50pts more than his tests. All bad!
Taken a few of his classes and really like Prof. Preisler. He is very patient if you don't understand and willing to help you. Posts notes on D2L to make it easy to take notes in class. Exams are quite hard so you really have to do the homework even though it's not graded to succeed.
He's a really good math teacher and will answer any questions you have. If you do the homework and test reviews you should be fine on tests. However if you don't the test will be quite difficult. I would definitely recommend him!
Great guy, but would not recommend anyone to his class. Never worked harder for a class and received a lower grade. Simple mistakes on your test will cost your grade because that's all he grades you on. Average grade is a D. (If you make it through the whole semester)
Sets you up for a less than deserved grade. Test are tricky and highly impact your grade.
Nice guy, tests are just tough. you really need to work extremely hard to do well. just ask for help
If you struggle learn his class will help you. Step by step working through problems and will answer any questions you have on the tests or homework in class. Homework was optional for my section but if you want to pass math classes you should be doing the homework anyway.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. If u r taking him for calc ,then it is a horrible idea. His exams doesn't match the notes. If u want to keep your 4.0 , don't take him. About half the students dropped out after taking the first exam!!!
The class is very fast paced, no time to study or understand the material. He only grades test, quizzes and final exam. No extra credit, and he doesn't grade the homework, nor give you credit for doing the homework. Test are very hard and its either you know it or you don't. I don't suggest taking his class if you are a slow learner.
Preisler is a nice dude and he'll help you if you need something explained. However, this class is TOUGH, and the HW problems he assigns for studying aren't similar to the actual problems on the exams. The exams themselves are also very difficult and he won't drop your lowest score. 40% of the students in my class dropped after a month.
Only grades tests and gives a couple extra credit opportunities. Doesn't go over homework, but will go over a few questions if you ask. Homework is not graded but it helps a lot to do it(math is all about practice). Tests are a pretty hard but he tells you what kind of questions will be on it. My advise is to watch as many youtube videos as you can
Excellent instructor!! If you want to understand calculus completely then take him. However, be prepared to work hard and do all of the homework problems in addition to the worksheets posted. Knowing algebra is essential to passing his class. Clear lectures and prepares you extremely well for taking calculus 2. Highly recommend!
A ton of material to learn in this class. Take this class at a 4-year institution and it's waaaay harder. Preisler is very detail-oriented and you have to understand concepts inside and out. Want to go into medicine, engineering, pharmacy? Details matter in his class as details matter in every profession!! Brilliant instructor.
This was my second time taking Calc. I never understood the concepts until now. His exams are hard as he has high expectations and wants all of his students to be successful in the next math class. He is very approachable and will answers any questions. Be prepared to work hard. Do not take this class with Orgo and Bio.
Mr. P is brilliant at math. Calculus is hard class at any college but he breaks it down. He explains formulas and theorems so it's a reasoning process as opposed to memorization. His exams are TOUGH but he tells you the types of questions that you will be required to know. I felt like I was at a university.
Students in the math center say he's hard. It's hard if you don't know algebra. Will break down steps but will not teach you previous material. Students who came straight from high school struggled since they didn't know precalc. Algebra and trig are a must to know before taking his calc class. Students expect an easy A. Not happening without work.
Priesler will not hold your hand like some community college profs to pass you through the course. He emphasizes critical thinking in his class which students aren't use to. He will not spoon feed you the material. I have enjoyed the challenge and the material that I learned in his class and it's because of him that I was prepared for Calc 2 at WSU
This is probably one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He is power hungry when it comes to his teaching style and gets enjoyment out Of making college students lives harder than they already are. The material we learned in class was a waste of 4 hours every week and 2 notebooks. He gives book work but ONLY grades test. He is a terrible teacher.
The final for 1150 is a killer. Priesler does his best to make u understand and prepares you for the final exam which is the department final. He tells you what to study for each exam in class. He only grades tests but if you do homework the tests aren't that bad. There is no easy math class without studying and doing homework. Great instructor!
Mr. Preisler is nice and he does his best to explain things. It's not his fault that math is the worst. I had to spend about 10 hours a week on the (optional) homework to get a 70% on his tests- seriously. This class is passable if you work really hard. If you have an aptitude for math, he's great. If its your life's greatest struggle, maybe not.
One of the best instructors that I have had. Take calculus somewhere else and you will see what I'm talking about. Yes, he is hard, but explains everything clear-cut and you definitely learn the material coming out of his class. Take it at Royal Oak and they will spoon feed you what you need to know. I'm taking him for calc 2.
Cool Professor, great teacher, but hard as heck! He is very informative, so you will learn but it will be to late because your grade would have already suffered. Recommend as a mentor but not as your actual, putting a grade on your transcript Professor. Would not take him, but he is a full time professor so you will encounter so study harddddd!
After going through calculus 2 with him, I have to say that his calculus 1 course prepares you extremely well for the calc 2 challenge. This course and the material is hard! But he posts all of his notes and additional problems that he works out to help you in the course. Be prepared to spend hours on the material to learn it though.
Awesome instructor! Posts all notes on D2L and additional worked out examples. If you want to do well in the next math course and actually learn concepts then take him. His exams are hard but if you do all of the homework and see him during office hours then he will help. Must know everything from calc 1 to do well. No such thing as an easy A!
I had him for calculus 2. He skips steps in his lectures. This is a big issue coz I was lost quite often. You MUST memorize ALL formulas from CALC I. If not, you are pretty screwed because he barely ever lets you use calculators or formula sheets. His tests are hard. No curves. SO DO YOUR HOMEWORK EVERYDAY FOR CHANCES OF PASSING. Fun guy though!!
EXCELLENT calc 2 teacher! He is HARD but has all of his lecture notes and more problems posted on D2L. You must know ALL formulas from calc 1. He wants students to do well and will spend extra time helping in office hours. Take this class at a 4-year university and they will not allow you to use a calculator or formula sheet either.
He only skips elementary steps that you should be aware of from calc 1 background. He is always willing to help if you have questions during lecture or look online for all of the course notes with ALL STEPS worked out and additional explanations! It is on you to ask for help if you need it. He will not hold your hand to pass you through the class.
Mr. Prielser is tough teacher. His tests are hard and aren't like the notes. His notes are nicely laid out with good problems to study with but then once the test comes he gives you very hard problems that you haven't seen before. Our class average for tests was 67% I would not recommend taking him, find someone else.
Mr. Preisler has high expectations of students. Details matter to him as details matter in any profession like medicine and engineering. Do not expect an easy A, his class requires work and you have to put in effort to earn an A which is possible. I never felt more prepared for the next math course until I took Preisler.
What a great teacher! He makes you work for a grade and gets you to understand concepts inside and out to do well throughout the semester. The final exam is HARD but he does his best to prepare you. Listen in class, do they homework, and ask questions. An A is possible!
Always made sure everyone understood the subjects before going on. Good at explaining difficult math concepts. Would be a tough class if you don't put time into studying each week.
This class is hard but he does a great job explaining theorems and concepts which is crucial for success in this class. Go to his office hours and he will clear everything up. There is no easy A but this class at a 4-year university is WAY harder. He is also easy on the eyes! Makes a 4-hour class go by fast!
He is tough, and his tests are tricky. He's a young teacher so maybe he has something he's trying to prove, but you will learn the material in and out. He is an excellent teacher, explainer, and mentor, but you have to work your ass off to pass. No joke, his tests are extremely difficult. I don't regret this, because I am prepared for anything.
Nice guy, but his tests are extremely tricky and are honestly unfair, especially because they aren't representative of the homework, but of the "worksheets" he posts that he doesn't provide answers to. I put a ton of effort into this class so I did well, but all the unnecessary stress he puts you through isn't worth it. Take it with somebody else.
Calculus requires a ton of effort for 8 weeks. Students expect to skate by with an easy class and a good grade without putting effort. Preisler requires you to apply concepts and think outside of the box to earn a good grade in his class. Excellent calculus 1 and calculus 2 instructor. Has a passion to help students if you see him in office hours.
Preisler is an excellent mentor and will answer any questions that you have. He posts all of his notes on D2L and additional problems that he doesn't have time to show in class. You have to understand concepts inside and out to pass his exams. Very friendly and approachable if you show him that you are putting in effort.
His class is HARD but I felt more prepared in calc 2 by having him in calc 1. I would not be doing so well in calc 2 if I did not have Preisler. He does not spoon food the material. You have to understand concepts and think critically. Excellent instructor and I will take again!
The final boss of your associate's degree. Intelligent, great lectures, explains material well, willing to explain during office hours. The whole class is graded on preposterously difficult tests (I have -- HAD -- a 3.8 so I am not merely a slouch) where you get points off for not working them out the way he expects. Brutal, has no mercy whatsoever
I would not take another class from him, I actually ended up dropping his class because I couldn't stand him and how our whole grade revolves around the million tests we have. He doesn't even post any grades on d2l or anywhere so you don't even know what your grade in the class is
Class is hard but if you do the homework and ask questions during office hours then you can get an A in the class. Test questions come from the homework but it's just a lot of material like any math class. Tests are fair but need to practice worksheets and homework problems.
His class is really hard. Your grade all depends on how well you do on his exams. I suggest you take this class with someone else if you want a decent grade. He's a good teacher, but a tough grade I literally studied everyday for this class.
Daniel Preisler is a outstanding professor!!! Make sure you do the following things to be successful in his courses: do homework, ask questions, review lecture notes and homework ( doing these things will make you successful for future math courses). The grade you deserve in the course is based on the time you put into the course.
Literally impossible to get an A because he takes points off tests for the smallest things, and his tests are already insanely hard, even after spending hours studying. Only a few people pass his class with a C or higher, and half of the people in the class end up dropping it. I recommend switching out of this class immediately if you have him.
Intimidating at first with the syllabus but if you actually talk with him during office hours and work out the homework problems then class is not bad. Very possible to get a B in the class and you learn a lot. Will spend time during office hours to clear things up. Approachable, easy to ask questions, and good looking! I would take again!
teaching style is an absolute joke. going from a B+ in elementary algebra I was well prepared and ready for the course. problem is that lecture was rushed and few examples were given with quality explanation. I don't expect my hand to be held but I expect to get solid examples and explanations. if you enjoy learning via youtube this is your class
Preisler is an excellent prof and mentor. Tests are hard to prepare you for the next math course. Makes you learn material inside and out. Details matter to him as details matter in any field like engineering and medicine. Take his class if you want to learn. Be prepared to work. No such thing as easy A. Especially in Calc. Great explanations.
One of the best teachers that I have had! Has a wide range of knowledge and prepares you so well for the next math course. Calc 2 is easy by having him for calc 1. I would not be doing so well if it weren't for Preisler. Need to know all of the previous math courses well to be successful in his classes. Will not spoon feed you so you must do hw
I love Mr. Preisler! He is always avalible outside of class during his office hours, and happy to go over the tests, quizzes, and homework. He'll answer any questions you have. He's so nice! :) But be aware, the tests are often a little different from the homework in the book. You'll have to apply the concepts you've learned in new ways.
Professor Preisler is a real gem, hes got a great personality and has an answer to everything. He makes you work for your grade and you learn all the concepts inside and out. It is a hard class so be ready put hours into studying. His tests are hard and require a lot of thinking. To be sucessfull attend office hours, math center, ASC and attempt hw
Honestly I am so disappointed. His class is graded based on nothing but tests alone. Half of the time the test questions will come as a surprise and look only remotely similar to the notes. The only people who do well are those with prior or advanced training in math. Good teacher, but the standards are unrealistic.
Honestly I am so disappointed. Half of the time the test questions will come as a surprise and look only remotely similar to the notes. The only people who do well are those with prior or advanced training in math. Good teacher, but the standards are unrealistic.
Preisler is an excellent teacher and has phenomenal explanations. His exams are hard but they prepare you well for the final and for next math course. Grades require effort. Put the time in, ask questions, see him during office hours and the class is not bad. Do not expect to skate by with a A. He has passion to help students and is approachable!!
You will learn a lot from Professor Priesler. You will need to work hard, and if you do you will clearly get a grade deserving for your effort. I would like to add if you have a question to ask Professor Priesler, he will happily assist you, and he will go out of his way to further explain the problem, so you will have a better understanding.
He is a good teacher but the class moves too fast for me. I would suggest in the future that the homework be graded. The grade you get is based on how you do on the tests. I'm not a math person so having more examples given in class would help. Or just get a tutor. I have to retake this class but I'm taking a different teacher.
Honest rating. If you are taking calculus the first time. This is not the professor to take it with, tho you will learn the concepts very well. The exams are extremely tricky and tough. No matter how hard you study you are never truly ready for the exams. Tho this is in no way an interpretation of the teachers knowledge, this class is really hard.
This class is hard but Preisler makes himself available during and beyond office hours if something is not clear. Thought I was getting a C but ended up with a B in calc. Will give generous curves at the end if you stay with it. Forces you to understand material inside and out! Great teacher and has fun teaching the material!!
I aced Calc 2 because of having Preisler for Calc 1. He gives a solid foundation and thoroughly explains concepts. If u need more math then Preisler is the prof! Makes u think outside of the box n apply knowledge to problems. Great gift to teaching and useful in any profession. Details matter to him as details matter in medicine and engineering.
The worst teacher I've had so far. I really struggled in this class even though I've already taken this level in high school. He only offered one extra credit opportunity, and you had to show up on a day when class wasn't scheduled. Grade is based on tests only and there are no dropped/matched to final. Over 75% of the class dropped/stopped coming.
He is honestly a great professor but DO NOT take him if you didnt have him for Calc 1. The exams are extremely difficult, the homework and the examples don't prepare you at all for his exams. (tutors struggle with his exams) Not really a curve, no extra credit or HW points. Audit his class but avoid if you actually want to earn a grade.
Avoid like the plague, 1 person passed summer 1 semester of 8 week calc 2, with a lot of people retaking, will not prepare you for tests, will not curve.
Clear lectures and great explanations. You MUST know all of calc 1. If you attend office hours, show him you are putting effort, but have a solid foundation of the prereq material then you will pass. Concept errors on exams from previous courses cost big points. Know algebra and put in the effort and you will pass. Excellent prof and mentor!
Great professor who tests your knowledge of concepts and not your ability to memorize information to spit back out on exams. Exams are hard and few questions make you think hard. Differentiates between the A and B students. Class is possible if you see tutors, work out homework and go to his office hours to clarify concepts. Willing to always help!
Great professor! Tests are hard but they prepare for any college level math course. Makes you apply formulas and concepts to certain problems. Take him if you want to understand the concepts and have a solid foundation. Don't take him if you don't put the effort in. Will help you in any way possible if you put him effort. Great personality overall.
If you're taking Calc 2 I absolutely do not recommend Preisler. He is a very tough grader and the class is solely based on test grades. By the second exam half of the students will have dropped the class.
One of the better professors I've had at OCC. In a field of professors with questionable ability he stands out as capable and very knowledgeable. Always glad to explain the theory behind a notion and grades very fairly. It's very simple; if you study the material you will do well, and Professor Preisler makes everything along the way achievable.
Failed once, took it the next semester and got a D+, Then I CLEPed out of it with very little effort. I know the stuff inside and out thanks to him, but his tests are extremely hard. I studied 10+ hrs every week did all the hwk and still got a D+. hes a great teacher but unless you are a math major you will work your butt off for a sub par grade.
I don't recommend Preisler. He seems nice but I took Calc 2 with him and only 1 out of 29 people passed. His exams are hard and the problems are more abstract than dealing with the course material. You have to be a "master of calculus" to pass. Tests are everything. I recommend you go to a different school altogether for math.
He's well versed in his lessons. However, he does not grade anything but test scores, and he himself admit (when we only had 2 tests left) that his tests are "much more involved than the lectures notes and homework". I spoke with a counselor who, after I had already taken the course, said they do not recommend him because he is too difficult.
Preisler is a great prof. Yes, the exams are slightly different than homework problems. You have to apply knowledge to problems. Definitely prepares you well and will answer any question you have. See him during office hours and he clears up any confusion. Will definitely help you if you put in effort. This class is waaaaayyyy harder at UoM.
Preisler does a great job at instructing, I actually understand the material but he has no mercy when grading tests, no type of partial credit. He tells you that we can use calculators on the exam, but when the day comes, no calculators. He doesn't use D2L for grading. I was told that 1 out of 29 passed his class before. Good luck if you take him!!
He is an amazing teacher, and I learned and actually remembered more from his class than I have from any other. The only thing that counts for credit in his class are the tests, and he has no mercy when it comes to them. If you study and do all the homework you should pass. This was the first time I've ever gotten bellow an A in a math class EVER.
Really tough professor. I've always loved math and have done extremely well but Priesler's tests are just really hard. During lecture the material is easy to understand and he explains it well but his tests are very difficult. You need to devote a lot of time to study.
When I signed up for this class I thought it would be an easy A, but I had to work hard. He teaches well, and explains thoroughly in class. The homework is optional, but I advise you to keep up with it. The exams are difficult and your grade is based only on exams. He is a really nice guy and always open to questions.
honestly, he's not a bad guy. i personally liked him as a person, but his course material doesn't match up with his exams. the only thing he grades is the exams and he is very very tough on grading them. also be prepared to study your butt off just to get a sub par or failing grade. overall i wouldn't take him again and i don't recommend.
The worst math teacher !! First class I've ever had to drop ! Don't take him
Please do yourself a favor and take the course with anyone else but this guy. His lectures are elementary compared to his exams. He will pick out the easiest questions for the lectures and for exams he will give you some extremely difficult problems that do not correlate with the homework what so ever.
Never hated someone more in my life.I learned the material very well; however his exams (your only grade for the course) are pure evil. The problems are RIDICULOUSLY difficult. If u enter them into an integral calculator it would say error. Purposely gave me a C- so my grade wouldnt transfer (needed a C). Only 1/30 students tranferred their credit
Took his class last summer and got about a 30%, retook at my uni and got a 3.5 without studying and just doing a small amount of homework. AVOID DO NOT TAKE, STAY AWAY. Everyone at OCC acknowledges that he's more than unfair but refused to do anything. Went all the way to his boss's boss to complain and got no where. OCC is completely incompetent.
I did all the homework, went to every class, and wrote all the notes. The problem is that the test is way harder than anything he ever does in class. Expects you've mastered every topic. Puts problem #150, the hardest one from the section homework on the test. Took w/ Shaw got an A. Roth, Dr. Reynolds all better options avoid this guy at all costs!
He seems like a nice guy, and hes really smart. However, this was the hardest class Ive ever taken! Despite doing everything possible to prepare (and actually understanding the material), I barely passed. All the previous reviews are accurate. Only take him if you dont need a specific grade or have time to redo the class.
His lecture notes are super helpful for studying for the test and he's more than willing to answer questions inside and outside of class. He's of a dry lecturer though and he only grades tests and quizzes (no extra credit). There weren't very many in my class, so once you get a single bad score, it's harder to come back. Start studying ASAP.
He wants all of his students to pass but won't hand you your grade. Lectures are very clear and detailed. Teaches very well but you need to put in a lot of work to understand homework problems outside of class. Always willing to answer any questions and clear things up during office hours. Cares about students who put in effort. Would take again.
Excellent teacher and clear lectures. He will tell you the types of questions that will show up on exams but you need to do the homework. Wants students to be successful and always willing to help outside of class. Great teacher overall!
One of the best teachers that I have had. Tells you exactly what to study for the exams and will answer any questions that you have. Always available before/after class and willing to explain things again during office hours. Great teacher!!
As long as he can see you're genuinely putting the work in, he'll do everything he can to help you. He's 1000x better than pretty much any other math instructor I've had. He really knows his stuff. By no means do I intend this rudely, but he doesn't exactly have much of a personality (common for math people). Lectures are dry but very informative
90% of the grade in this class is test grade, and they're extremely difficult. He'll include questions that have never been asked in the homework or lecture with no notice. He did offer one extra credit opportunity that could maybe net you 2 points in a class where the tests are 200+ points. Almost everyone dropped by the end of the semester.
Excellent professor!! He teaches problems and concepts. Exams are a little difficult but fine if you do homework. Great energy in the classroom and always willing to clear things up during office hours. A great mentor and teacher. He expects you to put in the time outside of class and will not spoon feed you. Appreciates work and effort if you show
Preisler is extremely dedicated and knowledgeable. Explains everything in detail. I felt like I was at a university for this class. Wants you to succeed only if you show him that you are trying your hardest and willing to put in the effort. Extremely kind and will work with you if you see him during office hours. Would definitely take again
Some might find his lectures boring, but they are very informative. If you want a good grade, expect studying 8-10 hours a week outside of class by doing the suggested homework problems from the textbook. His tests are not too hard and are mostly based on the problems from the textbook. I would definitely take my next level math course with him.
Passing is easy if you do *all* the homework problems in the book, especially the challenge problems, meet with him outside class, and use outside resources to augment his lectures, which are elementary compared to the questions on his tests, which frequently require an ability to generalize all conepts from lectures abstracted from familiar forms.
I liked Preisler classes until I took calculus with him... His lectures are dry but detailed and informative. As great as that is, his tests (the only grades in the class) don't match his lectures or really any of the practice problems either. I read the textbook, did ALL of the problems and worksheets, and saw tutors. Even that wasn't enough prep.
Mr. Preisler was nice and cracked jokes with students during class which was fine. But I failed his class. I studied, did the homework, watched countless math videos, missed one class, and took notes like a mad-man, but still failed the tests. The tests were nothing like the assigned homework problems. This is the first class I have ever failed.
Class graded solely on exams. Homework optional, is suggested to do well. However, even the homework, odds from the book which i supplimented with the evens, is not enough to prepare you for his exams. basic problems are practiced with the concepts then he moves on. class is 2 weeks ahead of syllabus. goes too fast. grades very hard on exams. avoid
With this teacher, I felt stupid all the way. Max I got on 2 of his exams is 6/127! Hell rush through problems in class, then look at you with those grinny eyeballs, asking for questions. Right off the bat in class, youll be hit with about 200 problems as a side exercise. There is not enough hours in the week to possibly catch up with the class.
This man is horrible. Hes a great teacher and you will learn so much in his class and will know everything but will fail a test completely. I studied 2-3 hours a day. Did all the hw, Paul notes practice problems and it was never enough for his man. Only grades test and thats it. You will leave every time you get a test back so defeated.
half the class dropped after the first exam. only 1/4 stayed the entire course. Grades are only based off exams, which are problems that are much more difficult than anything practiced in class. no chance for redemption, hell grade very hard on the exams. class averages were 60%-70% each exam.
I would stay away from this professor if you are looking to transfer. A large majority of the class dropped due his insane expectations. I've taken this class with another professor and it is much better taught, and overall very clear. Great funny guy, but the course will kill your GPA. Please take with another professor and save your money.
Preisler was a good professor. I could tell he cared about his students and he was almost always available to help, which I needed a lot of because math isn't my strong suit. I still ended up with a C unfortunately, but I should've taken advantage of more help. My only complaints about him are his lectures can be boring, and he's a tough grader.
Extremely hard tests, no lectures, no resources, no study guides, no curve, no notes, no calculator, nothing. Save your money because you will end up teaching yourself anyways!
Expected us to learn the content using outdated videos but yet take exams that were based on his expectations (which were always unclear considering he never communicated with us). 11 people remained out of 30+. I will have to retake this class again in the summer and spend more money. Avoid at all costs. Your grade is only based on hard exams.
In light of the pandemic, had to take this class online. The professor held one live class and then turned us to YouTube links of his colleague teaching the class. Isnt quick to respond to emails, expects you to know Calc better than he does, and he will still probably find something to mark you down for. Doesnt curve, doesnt allow Calc. RUN
The worst teacher I've ever had. The class started with 35 and now only 9 are left bc they can't drop. Students asked him for extra help and he said the hw problems should be enough. Refused to tell students the average grade in the class. I'll never return to OCC bc of him and how occ admin handled the 12+ complaint forms sent from the students.
AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS. Worst professor I've ever had. I have never gotten less than an A in any math class in my life and I FAILED this class. Grades are strictly based on quiz/exam scores. The exams are EXTREMELY difficult. If you end up taking the class and want a B or higher, expect 9 hour long days of studying to prepare for exams.
Took class online. Expects you to master every topic. Only resources he gives are some crappy old videos he didn't make and a list of homework problems. Doesn't teach you anything. Only grades tests. No study guides or practice tests. Unwilling to help students. 2/3 of the class dropped or failed out. Unless you already know calculus, avoid.
Soft-spoken and knows his subject. when it comes to learning calculus, he is difficult. I would recommend him if you are taking calculus to brush up your learning. Not good for first-time learners or for people who have difficulty dealing with math-induced-anxiety. very good for students excellent with math already.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH DANIEL PREISLER. It will save a lot of time and trouble down the road. I'm a 4.0 student that had already taken AP Calc BC in high school, and so Calc I should not have kept me up at night the way this class did. The class started with 35 students, and by the mid-way point (when I dropped), there were under 15 left. AVOID!
Lacks passion and motivation to teach. Does below bare minimum and expects students to be amazing at calculus. Was told that he takes test questions from umich tests, but does not teach or help students. Many of us reached out to him for help and he refused to provide extra resources or tell us the average grade. I suggest going elsewhere for calc
Honestly a one is too high of a rating, an actual psycho. Made us watch old youtube vids which don't like up with tests or his expectations. Grades on only exams which you cannot use a calculator for. Did zero lectures or zoom classes. Does not provide help or resources when I reached out. If you take him you will be in my prayers but plz don't
Not a bad professor, covers a lot of material in lecture and takes time to explain concepts. Tests are difficult; takes easy in class examples and puts them on steroids when creating exam problems -- doable but unnecessarily algebra heavy. Also grades incredibly tough, taking points many off for simple algebra errors or miswriting something.
We had to watch a bunch of older YouTube videos pertaining mainly to the previous book, his exams are way harder than the homework for no reason, and he posts exam grades a week or 2 after the exam, and your grade is based ONLY on the exams. I would have dropped if getting back one of the exams didn't take so long.
Torture. Grades arbitrarily, heavy weight to small mistakes. Lectures mind-numbing and ineffectual. DOES NOT TEACH WHAT IS ON THE TEST. Will teach you some calculus, your grade will not reflect that. Provides test anxiety and destroys confidence. Impossible to pass. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
By far one of the best math teacher. He is very passionate about teaching and really cares for his students. Easy to get ahold of. His lectures are very clear and organized. Test are open book open notes open internet so as long as you do the homework and practice test prior to the test you will pass.
Preisler meets on zoom and lectures and posts videos. Attendance not required if you want to watch videos. Tests are open notes and open internet so it is helpful to pass. He is easy to get a hold of and gives clear explanations. If you go to him he will help! Great instructor!!
Homework doesn't quite match the lectures, and tests don't match the homework. You have to apply what you learned on the exams, which is understandable but hardly any time is given for the exams either. You are also not graded on homework so if you fail one test your grade is shot. If you want a passing and decent grade I would not take.
Preisler is awesome!! He lectures and answers any questions that you have. Attendance is not mandatory and has videos posted. Tests are online and open book and open notes. Tells you exactly what to expect on exams. Would definitely take again! Easy A if you put the work in.
He is great! He takes into consideration of the work u put into the class. Always willing to help and answers e-mails very quickly. Exams are just like the homework and open internet resources! Excellent professor.
Math is hard in general without work but Preisler gives open internet exams so it's helpful. I was close to a C- but he gave me a C. He curves overall grades at the end of the semester. Definitely would take again and he always answers any questions. Just put in the work, show him you are trying, and you will succeed.
This class is not a joke and you do need to do your part and work on the homework. Exams are open book and open notes but he posts videos, has live lectures, and explains the material very well. Easy to get a hold of and always willing to answer any questions. One of the best profs that I had at OCC.
Preisler is hard but he curved at the end and boosted grades up by almost 10%. I went into the final with a B and ended up with A-. He knows his material well and wants each student to be successful. Soft-spoken but go to his office hours and show him you are putting in effort. Super nice guy if you know your basic to succeed in Calc. Take him!
Professor: you should know that no one is taking your classes so theres no point in posting fake reviews about yourself. Your classes have 20 plus spots available while other professors classes are filled up quickly
Excellent prof! Always available to clear up concepts and willing to help. Class is hard and is not a walk in a park. Be prepared to work and learn all of the material since all of it will show up on exams. Will definitely prepare you for the next math class. Will take him for Calc 2!!!
Do not take this prof. He seems to be justifying himself just before a new semester starts. Worst math professor at occ
By far THE WORST teacher I've EVER had at OCC! Only graded by exams. No homework, participation, or extra credit points at all. Lectures are on YouTube and don't explain anything well. Lectures don't have whafs in the homework. Tests often have stuff that wasn't covered in homework or lectures. DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. TEACHER.
Class is hard but if you go to his office hours in Zoom he will clear everything up. very knowledgeable and wants you to do well if he sees you putting in the effort. Class is not a walk in the park but prepares you well and wants you to succeed! Would take again!
Posts clear video lectures. Exams are hard and you need to know the material forwards and backwards. Go to his office hours and he will clear everything up. Very friendly and wants everyone to succeed. Treats the class like a real college-level calc class. Must stay on top of the material and do ALL of the homework. Am taking him for Diff Eq
He only grades exams and lectures do not go well with all exams. He will give no extra credit and does not curve grades in any way. Says he is here to help but is not very helpful. When meeting with him he doesn't spend time teaching you. He will answer a question you ask but doesn't try to explain in detail or give extra examples.
this professor is very hard! I struggle with math so this was not the best professor to pick at all. Homework is nothing like the tests and the notes are completely different from the tests and homework. I knew i would fail so if you struggle with math dont take his class!!! only nice thing is he is very nice.
Great professor outside of lectures, but during lectures gives simple examples which won't be on exams. The tests are nothing like the examples given in lectures, nor are they parallel in anyway. He doesn't grade homework and there are only 5 exams that determine your grade. Harsh grader, not fair, takes points off for tiniest mistakes.
He did not care when it came to teaching, The course is a waste of time and should not be take if you struggle in math. I participated a lot and still this course was hours of work. He was not a good teacher, he grades homework when he feels like it. You will never know your actual grade until you ask him. Majority of my class dropped.
Class is hard but he provides videos if you miss class. His lectures are clear but you need to do all of the homework to do well on exams. Grades homework to help with your grade. He's a harsh grader but will curve if needed. If you are willing to put in the work then you'll pass.
This class is really hard and so are his exams. If you put in the work and show him that you understand the basics then he will make sure that you pass. Teaches at the university level so you have to know your stuff along with all of the algebra and trig before going into calc. Will answer any questions that you have if you go to his office hours.
The videos that he posts are so helpful if you miss class. Collects homework at each exam and if you complete majority of the homework then he will give you 10/10. Exams are hard but very similar to the homework. Will only help your grade if he sees that you are putting in the effort. You cannot be lazy in his class. I will take him again!
Amazing professor! Tells you the exact types of questions that will show up on exams. You need to know the material well and he is a hard grader. He takes pride in his work and wants you to succeed in the next math course. I would highly recommend taking him.
Preisler was far in his grading. The exams mimic the homework problems. It is a lot to know but he tells you exactly what will show up on exams. He is really nice and will always answer any questions. I definitely recommend him!
He tells you exact types of questions that show up on the exams. If you put in the work and ask him questions then you will pass his class. He is not easy but if he sees that you are putting in effort then he will help. To pass his class you must put in the work and study. A typical college course requires work.
He curved my class at the end and gave me a C. He is a really good teacher and explains the material so it's easy to understand. He also has pre-typed note packets that make is super easy to take notes. Will take again for my next math class.
Do not take this Professor. He keeps posting good reviews about himself if you notice the wording. NO ONE TAKES HIS CLASSES.
People who posted bad reviews are straight down lazy. Envision not my first language and I got an A. I have never in my life had a better math teacher. In order to understand math you need to attend the lectures and do the homework. A lot of homework. That is the only way to understand.
Clear and concise explanations. Always willing to answer questions and gives the types of problems to expect on exams. Fair grader but math is hard in general so you need to put in the work to study. Fair teacher but wants you to learn to pass the class.
Yes there is a lot of homework in this class, however, that is the best way to learn. I feel that the other ratings are misleading, as it is the subject that is tough. Prof. Preisler's online lectures had actually helped me the most. If you have questions, you should definitely ask; he responded to questions and emails in a quick and clear manner.
this professor has posted numerous 5 star reviews written by himself to boost his ratings - I think that tells you all you need to know.
Professor, you should stop posting 5-star ratings and actually let students see the REAL REVIEWS about you. Stop posting how "great" you are and how you curve classes. stop it, it's really weird and annoying.
Not the best professor at all. He assigns tons of hw that DOES NOT match up with the exam. Takes off points for the smallest things, no extra credit, no dropping lowest grade, no good explanation during lectures, lectures are only on YouTube and are not helpful. Very nice character and personality, not nice when grading and preparing for exams.
To be truthful his class is based on 6 tests a midterm and a final keep in mind if you fail the midterm or the final which are 300 points each you will fail there is no getting around it I calculated every possibility. he is not accessible outside of class and not very helpful with his lechers on YouTube you have to spend hours teaching yourself.
Excellent person and teacher! Gave extra credit at every exam for students who stayed for the second half of class. Math is hard in general and he wants you to succeed. You have to do homework and study to pass his class but he will help you with any questions you have. Great person! Would recommend.
He only does 2 or 3 examples from each section before moving so he doesn't explain everything in full. The exam questions are so much harder than the homework he assigns. He said we should be spending 12-15 hours outside of class on homework which is unachievable. Awful experience
Exam questions are nowhere near the difficulty the problems he will show up on the board. Even after doing the homework problems, he tests problems we haven't seen before. In addition, the class is made up of only tests so one test will destroy your grade
has no room for help or will not deviate for the syllabus. Nor will he provide extra credit opportunities or test corrections.
You have to understand Calc 1 and Calc 2 to do well on exams. His exams are difficult but if you do all of the homework it is possible to pass. Not easy class but Calc 2 is not easy in general. Do not take his class if you just want a pass. Great instructor and always makes time to answer questions outside of class.
The YouTube videos are helpful to learn the material. But you have to spend hours working on problems during the week. The midterm is hard but posts a list of concepts which helps. Math is hard and taking it online makes it that much harder. Will provide additional time to work with you if needed. You can tell he wants his students to succeed.
Preisler is great! His video lectures are clear and the online exams aren't bad. The midterm and final are in-person and do require a lot of studying. He wants you to do well and posts a review to help. But you have to put in the time to learn the material. The class is not a walk in the park so you have to do all of the reviews and problems.
The content of this class (calc2) was not difficult, however the tests were harder than the material that was gone over in class. The class is based on exam grades, no quizzes or homework grades/extra credit. This grade structure made it hard to perform well in the class if you did bad on just one test. Would not recommend taking this professor.
All lectures are online. Will help if asked but you have to study to do well on the midterm and final which are departmental. They make up a good portion of the grade so you really need to know your stuff. Math is hard but Preisler makes it ok if you put in the effort. If you expect an easy A then do not take.
while there aren't many good options for math professors, I would avoid preisler. I've taken him twice, and both times were terrible. For what reason I decided to take him a second time, I don't know. He's very tough with grading, extreme amounts of homework (won't pass w/o hw) & exams are tough. tested on unreviewed material occasionally.
I took this course this summer and I worked my butt off and studied for 15+ hours a week doing the ridiculous amounts of homework for the material not to even be on the weekly quizzes or final exam. Lets the online system grade so you receive no points for work and is a harsh grader. The only class Ive ever gotten a C in. Please run
Taking this class was both interesting but weird. Pretty easy but professor constantly talks in a fake English accent. Funny up front but gets old by the 10th "pip pip cheerio" reference. Also, he knows every word to the 90s hip hop song "Poison" and will make sure you do too by the end. He's easy on the eyes which is a bonus.
I took this class in person for the first time since covid back in 2021. His exams do not match up with the notes he gave in lecture. Also, grades are based on exams only so if you are having a hard time understanding the the material, you are screwed because he is not helpful. He also really needs to stop posting fake 5 star reviews about himself
1-rarely! gives any extra credit. 2-does not make his own exams/doesnt even make study guides. 3-the Aleks homework assignments DO NOT LOOK LIKE THE EXAMS. - he encourages you to do the textbook chapter review, but doesnt give you the answer key so you dont know the correct answers. 4-he also emails students really late at night. 5-overall hes nice
No extra credit is given, and the exam questions are way harder than the homework. Despite claiming to give points for any shown work, this quickly turned out to be untrue. I entered this class apprehensive due to negative reviews, and unfortunately, I had every right to be.
He's a pretty picky grader but that's most math professors, so that's to be expected at this point. Other than that, he's very accommodating while testing and generally a kind professor I think.
I had not taken a math class in almost 5 years and tested into 1125. He was very clear when teaching the equations and formulas. Explained the math problems well and did not move on until he felt confident that all the students understood and goes through problem by problem. Stay up on the homework, pay attention during class and you will pass.
Don't take him
Very critical about grading. You HAVE to use all of HIS notations. Use the book (standard) notation and not his = POINTS OFF, even if it is objectively correct. Lectures are decent, but he teaches you how to solve problems, not why or how anything works, nor the practicality behind it. Overall, a below average "professor".
Crazy exams; 3 hours per, and you will be there the entire time.
Preisler co-taught MAT2740 with Dr. Reynolds (who is awesome), but Preisler did all of the grading and lectures. The lectures were awful, robotic, and only answered the "how" not they "why". And the grading was some of the most strict I have ever seen. Made a not so difficult class very hard. I 4.0'd Calc 2, but am rocking a 2.0 in calc 3.
As the other reviews have said: made an easy class into an extremely hard one. His grading criteria makes no sense, the lectures are unhelpful and do not explain anything besides how to solve a few types of problems, and the exams are impossibly long. 53 difficult homework problems per week, due on Saturday?? Definitely avoid taking him!!!
I do not know how you can mess up teaching a class this badly. The lectures consist of reading off the theorems provided in the book and doing example problems without any explanations; he just draws a picture and plugs numbers into a formula while saying what he's writing down. He does not understand the material.
Calc 3 is obviously a labor intensive and difficult class. That being said, his lectures are some of the worst I've had thus far in Calculus. They are very robotic and he basically reads/writes from pre-written notes with minimal explanation. Very harsh grader as well. He'll take away half of a problems points if some notation is wrong.
The lectures demonstrate a serious lack of understanding regarding the material, much less the disconnect between what is shown on the exam versus what is on the homework. Sincerely wish I could get a refund; this course was a waste of time as a learning experience.
Lecture videos are extremely monotonous. He doesn't explain anything, simply reads to you what he's writing down with no explanation of how he got there. I often go to the textbook for help but then get marked off for not using his notation. Exams are very long and even though you have 3 hours to complete them you are still fighting the clock.
The lectures are dull and lack explanation, forcing you to rely heavily on the textbook. Exams are unreasonably long, with a strict grading policy. To manage the workload, I found Unstuck ai and other study tools helpful. Overall, a challenging course, but passing is possible with dedication.
If you want to fail your class have Mr. Preisler be your teacher. HE IS THE WORST TEACHER ON THIS PLANET. He breaks up his final and midterm into two parts worth 150 each but the 1st part of the test has around 30 questions and the second only has 5 so if you don't understand what's on part two that well. You will fail the whole test.
If you are in university and taking this class for credit, getting a C or higher is pretty easy. There is a lot of extra credit in the class that you can get, and all the homework you can easily get 100 percent on. But Preisler is a terrible prof. The lectures are horrible. Tests are 3 hours long each, and he takes points off for wrong notations.
Prof. Preisler was just a horrendous professor. His lecture videos lacked real explanations, and I struggled to conceptually understand the material he was teaching. He explained the 'how', not the 'why', and he was just reading from pre-written notes. This class was a lot harder than it needed to be.
Professor is unfair! I asked him if I can do cross product a certain way on exams and he replied yes then marked me down a lot of points when I did it that way on the exam (even though it was same as what I showed him). He did nothing except provide pre-recorded lectures which were mostly examples with no good explanations and graded so harshly
Professor Preisler's lecture videos are laughably inadequate. In order to pass this class you will need to do a lot of self learning, but be careful because he will mark things wrong on tests if you use a different notation than what he uses. Professor Reynolds weekly zoom meetings are probably the only reason I passed this class.
Excellent instructor and person. Wants you to succeed but you have to put in the work to learn the material. Not an easy A but you will learn. Go to his office hours for clarification.
Preisler is not somebody i would EVER recommend. His lectures were awful, i tried to ask many questions and a few times he would just frown at me. Very dry human being. Though i failed the class i stayed till the last day to absorb as much information as possible. I instead took Professor Hoag and it was night and day. She is an amazing professor.
