He's a great teacher with a lot of real world experience. The test were pretty easy if you went to class and the papers weren't bad either....
My favorite teacher ever!! He is so helpful and a great lecturer.
his exams are straight off the slides.. no book required, just the readings he posts online and the slides he goes over in class.. highly recommended, easy A!
He is very knowledgeable on all topics discussed in class. It can sometimes be boring be he is a great teacher. Tests aren't bad as long as you know all the things on the slides. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
He is very knowledgeable about the topics discussed, is a very caring young professor. There are attendance points, a few tests and papers. Over all not to difficult of a class
this teacher is awesome. and so good looking. he is very knowledgeable
Knowledgeable. Informative. Helpful. Cares about students. Widely traveled and often brings his experiences meaningfully into lectures. I learned so much in his V160 class--he greatly enhanced my understanding of national and interntl news and events. He is a nice guy too.
This professor is definitely great! He is erudite and care about students. Although his stuff is not so easy for international students, I still regard his course as outstanding. Preston is always happy to help you, even your question is about another academic topic. Soooooo nice and excellent guy. You can feel the world in his class!!
Excellent teacher, I really enjoyed the class. I was actually sad when it ended.
My favorite SPEA teacher of all time!
Daniel Preston is the greatest instructor I have had. Although I have only take 1 class with him I still remain in contact and visit his office hours. He is the definition of an expert in International Policy. The experiences and information he brings to class are invaluable.
Daniel Preston is a fantastic professor and mentor. He is young and approachable and always happy to help. I took his class on a whim and now it is the reason I am a SPEA major. I still visit him to talk about my future and hear his insights on the World.
Professor Preston is awesome! Great guy who genuinely cares about his students. Teaches very well and has so much experience and knowledge about the course. He's also very hot! Class is not difficult at all although you do have to study for the exams. He's very fair with grading though. Favorite professor at IU for sure. Wish he taught more classes
This professor is great! Best IU course I ever took. I learned so much and it wasn't too difficult! He has so much experience and good stories. He?s really interesting and so is the course material. Take this class!
This was my favorite class last semester by far. I highly recommend it, no matter your major! Preston is an incredibly knowledgeable guy. Policy issues can be pretty complex, and he does a great job of breaking them down and making them understandable. You can get by without doing the readings as long as you study his .ppt slides before the tests.
Awesome prof, has a bit of a god complex but it's ok because he's hot. Made class enjoyable and explained material well. You won't consider skipping the class if you get a look at him. Speak up in class if you're knowledgeable about the material, he'll like that and most likely give you a good grade. Definitely recommend him and his courses.
Preston is an amazing professor! has a lot of real world experience and knowledge which makes the class very interesting. He is helpful and cares for the students not to forget how good looking he is! Tests weren't too bad, just go over all the slides..couple papers as well. Take his class, you'll love him!!
Awesome Professor! You learn a lot in this class and he has many great real-world experiences to share. lectures are interesting and tests are curved heavily. One of my favorite classes and professors
Great class that isnt very time consuming. the material is really interesting and he makes everything so easy to understand. a couple of papers and a group project, but nothing too bad. kicking myself for the a- i got because if I had studied a little harder I couldve gotten an A!! exams r straight from the slides - study those and ur golden.
BEST PROF YET!!! Super interesting. Has amazing stories from real world experiences. Haven't had one boring class yet. Always learning new things. Pay attention, and study the slides, and you'll get an A. Keep it up Prof Preston!
This is my 2nd class with Preston. He is a great instructor and has a lot to offer. I have learned more about finance from his class than any other finance course I have ever taken. I highly recommend him for any class he teaches. This topic was International Development Finance
Excellent prof! One of my favorites. Very helpful and makes class very interesting
seems like a nice guy up front but then is shady when it comes to grading.
Favorite professor at IU
This was my first class with Professor Preston, in his Policy class. He is very thorough during (mandatory attendance) class. He shows a couple video clips to split up the lecture and some group work. I rewrote the slides and studied all lists (countries, tactics) and got As on all of the tests. No book, just keep up on current events.
Prof. Preston is by far the best at IU. He is very engaging and you will learn so much from his course. If you take any of his classes, get to know him! He'd be a great mentor. Study the slides and pay attention in class and you will do fine. Also, he's pretty damn gorgeous.
Prof. Preston is seriously the best at IU! Learned so much and had fun while doing it. He's very laid back and has a lot of life experience. Attend class, take notes and you'll do fine in this class. Keep it up Prof. Preston!
Professor Preston is very interesting, knowledgeable, and has an incredible amount of understanding on national and international affairs. This is a great introduction course into SPEA.
Professor Preston is by far the best professor I have had at IU thus far. He really cares about the students and encourages visits to office hours to clear up any and every question that comes up. His real-life experiences make the class more interesting. He is very well informed on every subject that is studied. Definitely choose him for V160!
This class was supposed to be my major but fortunately helped me realize that SPEA is not the place for me. He's a nice guy, just not a great professor. It would've been useful to have a textbook. Lectures were ok because of interactive component, though I often loathed going to class.
Thought this class was going to be easy but it definetly wasn't. He intentionally made the multiple choice questions on exams really hard and the exams were overall pretty difficult for a 100 level class. I suggest picking a different class if you are looking to fulfill a gen ed requirement
Prof. Preston is definitely a great professor and a mentor. He has a great knowledge on public affairs. If you really want to learn something on this class, you should choose him.
The tests are extremely hard compared to the lecture! Questions on test are VERY hard!
I loved him! Just really study the slides and you will be okay! Also, at least read through the articles once.
Preston is an awesome prof. His powerpoints are interesting and well organized. He also breaks up his lectures with videos to keep the class engaged. The class has two exams, two short essays, a group project, and then the final. No quizzes or other assignments. The exams are easy as long as you pay attention in class and study the powerpoints.
Professor Preston's course is structured to get students involved in discussions. This class got me into politics and made me like reading the news. There are two essays and three exams. He is a great professor and keeps his class engaged. Do not sit there on your phone. Ask questions and enjoy learning about wars, government programs, & ISIS
Best professor I've had at IU. Taking a third class taught by him now. His classes aren't "easy" but if you go to class and pay attention, you're in the clear
favorite class and professor this semester by far! I found the course material to be relevant and lecture & discussion to be really engaging NO TEXTBOOKS EXAMS weren't particularly hard and he adds points if you participate in class really cool person! talk to him after class if you have the chance!
I was a total nerd in this class, which I usually am not. I loved his lectures though. he was always interesting and has a special way of explaining material to our age in a way we understand. he has any credentials that set him aside from other professors. TAKE THIS CLASS! wouldn't call it an easy a but is enjoyable and a definite doable a
Preston is a baller. Attendance is mandatory and participation is recorded in the final grade, so be engaged. The tests are adequately hard, but the group project is graded harshly. He puts together solid power-point slides and provides insightful commentary on real world issues. One of the smartest men I've met and it reflects on yourself.
If youre trying to take National & International Policy, try to choose a different teacher. His lectures are very easy to follow and study, his homework is easy reading questions, only two papers. However the exams are insane. 50 questions formatted: A, B, C, A & B, B &C, all of the above, none of the above. (on every single question). Its awful.
Screw this guy. His class makes me fall asleep everyday. Attendance is so important and he will count you absent if you're caught on your phone. His tests are actually impossible and in his eyes, a 75 grade is amazing because he knows how difficult his exams are.
Loved this class (V160)! The lectures were really interesting, but you HAD to pay attention or you would miss something important. The tests were near impossible no matter how much you studied or understood the material and are worth a lot of your grade. Even with 100% on tests, consulting project, and participation, test grades hurt overall grade
Every class is a lecture, so be ready for that! The exams aren't "hard" but you should study!
Class was difficult but Professor Preston made himself available outside of the classroom to help. Tests were very hard because of the way he words the questions but there were other graded assignments in the class so your grade wasn't reliant on the exams. Attendance and participation in class are considered in your final grade.
Love love love Danny P. He has absolutely incredible lectures and is so interesting and knowledgable. Tests were pretty tough- you have to sink in a lot of studying. It is possible to get an A, but you work for it. Definitely recommend him for National and International Policy- it was truly awesome!
He is kind of awkward but an amazing lecturer. The tests can be hard but as long as you make a study guide off of the slides its a manageable A
When choosing a professor for Ntnl and Intl Policy, go with Preston. He's incredibly knowledgeable and respected in his field, and a great resource if you take advantage of his office hours and time after class. This course is a fantastic introduction to all things policy, and Preston inspires his students to learn and lead with heart and humility.
this was my favorite class this semester. Very interesting and few homework assignments aside from two short papers and a project. The tests are very difficult and detailed in my opinion but I still highly recommend Preston. He is also accessible out of class to answer questions.
Professor Preston was by far the best professor I've ever had. He fostered an environment that enabled students to delve deeper into topics and go beyond just the basic understanding of comparative and international policy. He was always available to meet and discuss class topics or future endeavors. I would highly recommend taking his courses!
His tests are absolutely ridiculous. He blames his scheduling time on the university when literally all other professors chose their own times. Who schedules a final at 8 am on the final day of the semester? A literally crime against humanity. Not to mention the tests are 100 questions and "select all that apply." Good lecturer, bad test maker.
Ignore the good ratings, taking a class with Professor Preston is NOT worth it. His tests are completely unfair consisting of primarily "select all that apply" questions that were not even topics on the study guides he gives you. Lectures are boring and feel more like you're being required to listen to him brag about all of his accomplishments.
His exams are basically impossible to study for because the format of the questions are so wordy. I could go on and on about this class, but if you have the opportunity... choose a different professor.
I had Professor Preston for Spring of 2021 and our class was mixed, meaning zooms once a week and optional the other days. We have weekly lectures, quizzes, and discussion posts once a week for class and then 2 papers and a project throughout the semester. The exams are tough and he is a tough grader, so be prepared for that. I struggled in V182.
Just don't guys, dont do it.
I may be biased because his class was a topic I was extremely interested in, but the instructor is a pretty good illustration of what a professor is. Professional, knowledgeable on the subject, real-world experience in his topic, articulate and good at explaining complex concepts. Class does challenge you with papers and projects.
He's a gem professor. Makes you work real hard for the grade and gives one a lot of insights that are required in the business and after college life.
Literally amazing! I had him for IFS (International Dev Finance & Financing the UN's SDGs) and he uses a lot of academic articles instead of textbooks. He'll show one argument and then show you the complete counter. Super accessible outside of class and always willing to impart wisdom, share his experiences, etc. Best professor I've had.
I loved Professor Preston! This class was one of the few I was completely immersed in. He uses a lot of real life example to demonstrate topics that he discusses in his class. The tests aren't bad if you study and pay attention in class. He is a great mentor and is always willing to help any student. I would retake his class if I could.
I would highly recommend taking Prof. Preston! This was the only class I had that I was very engaged in the entire time and he is definitely one of my favorite professors I have had here at IU. Tests are moderate and if you pay attention you will do fine. Quizzes and homework don't take very long and are used in class when lecturing.
I enjoyed this class! The material was very interesting, and he made sure to divide the material up between group discussions, videos, etc. I also appreciated how all of our quizzes were take home ones, and we could use some notes on the tests. The tests were difficult, but I feel as if he gives enough opportunities to balance out your grade.
really enjoyed this class with this professor. as long as you show up and do all of the work, you should be fine
I love Dan Preston, he's highly intelligent and makes his lectures extremely interesting and engaging. There is a lot of reading and homework in the class, but half of the homework is watching documentaries he assigns that helps you understand the material and is actually so interesting to watch/learn about. I would recommend him as a professor.
Preston is a very knowledgeable professor, he always talks about his personal experiences living internationally to help the class understand more about the topic. The exams are kind of annoying, with multiple choice questions consisting of "select all that apply" and you only get partial credit if you choose 1 option correctly.
Professor Preston is amazing and very knowledgeable. Lectures go in-depth into interesting topics. Exams can be tricky and he doesn't round. The study guide really is just a guide to go into depth about the topics in the guide don't just look up exactly what it's saying and you'll do fine. Trickiest exam is the 1st one then you get used to them.
Professor Preston is an incredibly humble and intelligent man. His lectures are very detailed and informative, and he is very passionate about his course subjects. Tests can be tough, but pay attention and take good notes and this will not be an issue. Professor Preston is the only guy I would recommend taking V182 with
Lectures are important, as that is where you'll get the best notes. The chapters you're supposed to read for the textbook assignments are VERY long. Overall, not super hard as long as you keep track of your work and ATTEND class.
I really liked this prof. You can tell he's passionate about what he's teaching and lectures were interesting and engaging. Readings are a little long but you can just skim. If you pay attention during lectures you should get a good grade.
He is extremely well versed in international affairs, and is very well qualified to be teaching this course. Do the homework!!! All of the homework assignments were incorporated into the in-class lessons very well. Participate in class, he loves participation and breakout discussions. I would 10/10 recommend this course, he is the best professor!
By far and away the best professor I've ever had in my academic career. I just created an account solely to leave a review for this guy, he is so legit its not even funny. Prof has 50+ 5 star reviews for a reason.
Preston has a great teaching style that makes lessons relevant and applicable in the outside world. I would advise actively engaging in class to get the most out of it. You learn the most in lectures. Readings are not hard or long. Exams can be kinda difficult but nothing out of the ordinary.
He held a lot of discussions within lectures, and was quite good at leading them. The tests aren't too difficult, however the wording can be somewhat tricky so look out for that. Just show up to class and take a few notes, the class will be quite easy.
Had him for V100 as well. Excellent professor who is extremely knowledgeable on the topic. Course is combined w/ graduate section. Content is approachable and he makes it easy for non-finance ppl to get an in-depth understanding of how global IDF works. Even as a Kelley major, I would STRONGLY recommend his class. 2 tests, 4 HW, 1 final project
Dr. P is awesome. He is absolutely an expert in his field and explains policy in a digestible way. His lectures are very interactive and engaging, with lots of videos and small group discussions. The exams can be difficult, but just do the reading, pay attention to lectures, and make sure to study well and you'll be fine. Take V182 with him!
i love this man. he is very accessible outside of class and if you meet w him he gives you so much advice. exams are pretty difficult but as long as you study the lecture slides and quizzes you'll be good. also gives a cheat sheet for final. take dr p
Dan was legit the best professor I have ever had. The way he bases his class is completely fair, he uses many videos instead of readings to keep you engaged and uses studies to see what students enjoy and engage with. Dan is an amazing professor that actually teaches things that are useful to your life. I 100% recommend taking him.
Professor Preston is an amazing professor who sets clear expectations for his students and is very knowledgeable on his subject. With plenty of professional experience and a skill of speaking, his lectures and class are easy to understand and are always interesting.
Great professor, 182 goat. Best prof to take for this class. Very engaging lectures. Light homework outside class keeps you on track to prepare for exam. Exams aren't too bad if you pay attention in lecture. W
Professor Preston is a great professor. He is meticulous and detailed in his lecturing. You can tell that he extremely knowledgeable on the content he teaches due to his prior and current work experience in related fields, and best of all, he is personable and cares about you as an individual. If you have to take V-182, take his class.
He is great and all of his lectures have been very interesting and engaging. if you show up to class, engage in lectures, and prepare/study you should get an A.
If you want a professor who is going to hand you an A just for showing up, do NOT take Daniel Preston's class. If you want to learn, DO take his class. He has a wealth of knowledge and is always happy to clarify any course material he goes over. There is a lot of homework and written responses, but just do the work, and you will be fine.
Top 5 Professors I have had at IU Bloomington during my three years here thus far.
Professor Preston is the most knowledgable and best professor I have had at IU. You can tell he cares for his students, and also cares that they are not wasting their money on an education. His classes are beneficial to attend, and the structure of his class is clear. The tests are kind of difficult, but the resources are there to succeed.A+ Prof.
Easiy one of, if not the best professor at IU. Definitely would recommend taking this class if you are looking to learn and not just waste time. In my opinion, the world could definitely use more professors like Daniel as he encourages discussions in class, holds you accountable, and is so knowledgeable on a vast majority of topics. 10/10 for me.
Professor Preston is an amazing professor. He is so knowledgeable of every topic and actually wants students to do well. He gives study questions for the tests and doesn't veer away from them. I cannot recommended taking his class enough as he actually wants students to succeed.
Professor Preston is one the best professors i've ever had. He is very knowledgeable on the information which makes learning from him so much easier. He is engaging and truly wants you to learn the material and succeed in his class. I look foward to his classes and I highly recommend taking his class.
Great prof. no complaints except to study harder than I did the first 2 exams. intelligent, well-spoken, super strong background, and confident in his subjects. go-to advice guy as well. pay attention, take notes, and show up, and it'll be super interesting.
