A total joke. Smug, full of himself, and an abysmal teacher. Even worse, he thinks he's funny.
His class was alot better than I thought it'd be... and easier too. But I rarely read and was able to get a good idea through his summaries, he goes over the main points. Honestly, I NEVER read and I got a B... but I did attend every class and took great notes. He's funny but cocky. he's ok.
People should get used to arrogant profs. They're just part of the scene. Same with profs who are not funny. And he's both. What really annoyed me was that he doesn't really care about teaching or students. For someone who's interested in the material, that's hard to take.
I really like him. He's funny and I think he teaches really well. Because of this class, I've looked at Mythology in ways that I've never seen before. Prof. Richter is absolutely brilliant! He's probably my favorite professor so far.
I came into this class thinking it was high school stuff all over. He is very entertaining and easy to talk to and interprets mythology and gives it purpose like I've never known before. Great class! Very fair/easy 2 exams and 2 papers.
Really good teacher. The material was a bit dense at times and he did monopolize debate on occasions but he enhanced the learning experience
Prof Richter is amazing! seriously, my favorite class
He's pretty funny and enjoys teaching the material. Attendance to lectures is absolutely mandatory, you won't get anywhere in the class without notes word-for-word for what he says. Material is confusing most of the time but discussions help a little. Overall not a terrible GE to take, and he really does try to make it interesting.
Awesome professor!
Although this professor is really funny & down to Earth, that doesn't help this course any. It was heavy on readings which were very long. The readings themselves are draining and boring. I attended every lecture & still only got a C+. TA's matter. It's hard to take comprehensive notes because he goes off on tangents. Go to class & take good notes!
Richter is the funniest professor. He should be a comedian. I took the class pass/no pass and really enjoyed it. Quite a bit of reading, but interesting lecture.
He's a funny guy, and the class is kinda interesting. Exams are easy. I had a good TA too. Overall the course was good.
No textbook but heavy on readings which don't necessarily have to be done. Midterm and final were both open note so as long as you have some you don't need to do much prep. He's actually a pretty funny professor, but the subject matter is unbearably boring unless you're really interested in racism throughout the ancient world. Not a bad GE.
Lectures were interesting, readings were long, draining, and incredibly boring. 2 exams and 2 papers, exams were open notes, so go to class and write down EVERYTHING he says word for word. Grade depends on TA. Pretty funny professor, but cocky and goes off on tangents. Not a horrible GE to take.
Professor Richter is a GREAT TO professor with an extremely easy class compared to others. He is a classics guy, so expect everything in lecture to somehow deviate to discussion of Greek/Roman history/cultural/politics. Never actually talks about the reading. He is extremely knowledgeable and probably the most hilarious teacher I've ever had.
Prof. Richter was awesome! He is incredibly insightful and knowledgeable about the Classics; he even knows Ancient Greek! We didn't have very much work, and class discussions - though sometimes barely mentioning the work being read - were always insightful and something to look forward to. I almost want to be a Classics Major just because of him!
Richter was good professor. He was funny and engaging with stories and such, but sometimes went on long tangents. Note taking was difficult because he jumped around topics a lot. If you read, attended class, took good notes, and had a good TA, it is not a hard class. TAs grade everything though. 2 Papers, 2 midterms.
Professor Richter has the voice of Zach Galifinakis and is almost as entertaining, in my opinion. He knows that very few people take the class because they're interested in the subject matter, but he manages to make the material interesting and engaging in lecture for all. I love his tangents. The class is an easy A if your TA grades kindly. Love.
Super funny professor but the texts are dull. The grading is all based on the TA so if you're stuck with a tough TA, there's not much you can do. I attended every lecture and I have a B going into finals. I know some people who have As and never go to lecture they just attend the discussion section. Avoid the class if you can.
Funny teacher and passionate about the subject, but readings are too long to keep up with. It's hard to understand what he's saying in lecture because he uses Greek words sometimes and goes on tangents. He's very picky about attendance but lectures can be boring. Grades depend on TAs. Wouldn't be my first choice for a GE.
Richter is a very chill guy but not suitable as a college professor. His lectures are awfully boring and difficult to keep up and take notes. Unfortunately, I also had the pleasure of getting a terrible TA who treats a GE like a Berkeley CS weedout class. This class is very good for Classics majors, but if you just want easy GE, avoid at all costs.
Will say things in class that you will want to write down. He is a thoughtful, kind and motivational leader who will teach you to think about the world in a different way. Although he doesn't always stay on the subject matter, if you just go with the flow you will have the experience of your life. Be thoughtful in your writing and he will love you!
this was simply the worst class ive ever taken in my life. Lots of Readings, cocky attitude, tries to be funny, says no final on the first week then says he added it during the second week, gotta have really fast hand writing cuz u rnt allowed to use laptop to type notes, weird TA, expects students to attend his boring pointless lecture, pop quizs
Richter is hilarious but also extremely insightful. His goal was to change the way we think about the world around us (specifically with regard to diversity) and it worked. Class is 95% discussion-based, so participate and make sure you at least know roughly what the readings are about. The material is fascinating, even if the syllabus isn't clear
never again. 010 would not dare do classics again. please avoid this class
Richter delivers funny, comprehensive lectures on Greek myth (not always focused) and makes the material relatable. T.A.s do all grading. No quizzesHW assignments: LOTS OF READINGS; manage your time. 1 4-pager, 1 8-pager, 1 midterm and 1 final. Both tests open note. Study with a big group, GO TO CLASS & you'll pass! I loved this class.
Yes, he is funny -- but is an extremely unorganized lecturer, and are hard to understand or follow. Yet, all of his tests are based off of lecture, so be prepared to attend every class. He also considers not attending class to be a personal offense to him, so he will be personally hurt if you don't come to class. Overall, an awful class.
never again
Richter is funny, insightful, and incredibly intelligent. Arguably the best possible TO teacher to pick. He's fluent in Greek and always ready to talk about things that matter to his students, regardless of whether or not they directly relate to the class material.
Richter's class actually changed my life. He's a genius, so cool to talk to, and hilarious. Our class discussions were amazing and covered so much more than just the assigned reading list. I still learned a ton but I think Richter's class had significantly less work than other Core 102s. Bottom line: take a class from Richter before you graduate.
Every class: arrange desks into a circle and discuss a topic that may not be related to the reading (e.g. trigger warnings.) Class is 95% discussion in 1 big group. Only had 2 papers - a lot less than other classes. If you do not like proposing solutions to major world issues in front of 30+ highly intelligent individuals, do not take this 102.
I would definitely recommend taking Richter's class if you're in TO. Not only do you have a lot less work than the other 102 classes, but also you learn so much about just life in general from Richter. I don't know if I retained that much about the classics from his course, but I will definitely remember a lot of the life lessons we discussed.
He's a really interesting professor and he definitely makes the class engaging. I started out not liking the class because the content doesn't make sense, but I gradually got into the course, and when I did, I surprisingly like the course. The content turns out to be pretty interesting, and you actually learn new things.
I chose this GE randomly because it worked with my schedule and came into the class not passionate about the subject matter at all. Professor Richter's engaging lectures and awesome sense of humor made this a perfect GE for me. Midterm and final are open note, so the only reading I did was for the two essays. Overall, super laid back class!
Professor Richter is one of the best professors I've had at USC. He is very knowledgeable about the material he discusses in lectures. The TA I had was amazing and discussions helped clear up anything the professor may have not clarified in lecture.
Doesn't do anything but talk about his political beliefs. Class is pretty terrible. I took it pass/fail. Not a lot of work, but the content of the class is so pointless it will make you question your sanity. TA's knew absolutely nothing - Richter wouldn't answer their emails. I'd drop out before I took this class for a letter grade.
Very smart, and cares a lot about his topic. He clearly finds it very relevant and tries to make you feel the same. Still, the lectures are tough to keep track of, since he mostly rants stream-of-consciousness. You can do fine if you stay on top of it, but it's still tough to manage. Smart writing is an absolute must for this class.
Richter is a hilarious and inspirational person, but his lectures were way too hard to follow. The grading criteria is not clear. Avoid the class, it will confuse you at best. If you do take it, pick a great TA like Emi. 2 tests, 2 papers, 2 reaction papers. TA's value textual examples and unique analysis.
I've always thought that every college course would be able to add some sort of value to my life. However, that outlook completely changed when I took Richter's course. Seriously, I've never hated a class this much before. The topics are just all over the place, and nothing really makes sense.
I absolutely LOVED this class. However, I was also the notetaker and tutored like 6 kids... regardless, if you get a group together to study, and you form a squad with whom you sit with during class, it's AMAZING. Truly a lot to be learned here. He's influential and stimulating. The TAs were slightly awful but whatever. TAKE THIS. ENLIGHTEN YOSELF
He's the kind of professor that you would like to have as a guest lecturer, and THAT'S IT. Actually taking a class with him wasn't a good idea since he's quite scattered and it's really hard to keep up with his lecture. Also, he changed his syllabus 3 weeks before the final and added an extra exam which messed up lots of people's flight back home.
TO students must take this corse from Richter. This class made me declare as a Classics major. The lecture isn't really a lecture. It felt more like a very complex book club where he would open the floor up to discussion. I could honestly listen to him speak for hours at a time. There was a good amount of reading, but all things you should read.
I enjoyed the class. It wasn't super easy but it is college and it is not supposed to be a walk in the park. As a class we were not talkative which caused for some boring lectures :( I appreciated how he did not shy away from the taboo topics, it was refreshing and definitely appreciated. Learned a lot about myself as well as the topic.
Professor Richter is a great professor who really cares about Classics and his students! Just make sure you turn up to lecture otherwise you won't get a good grade because there are no online notes or powerpoint slides, but if you turn up and do what you're supposed to do - it's not a hard class. ALSO SO to TA Russell who is super nice and helpful!
Most of the class is discussion based which I personally loved. You just sit in a circle and talk about the reading for that week and how it relates to race and Richter often connects it to issues going on in world today. The class is based on two easy reaction papers, an in-class midterm and two papers; nothing too hard.
Very funny guy. The content is pretty boring but he makes its interesting, however lectures are sometimes all over the place, but would forsureee still go to lecture. As long as you go to lecture and read summaries of the readings you should be chillin. 2 small reaction papers, 1 big paper, 1 midterm, 1 final.. and thats all. Just go to class.
Professor Richter gives pretty fun lectures on important topics however they can get really boring at times if you're not invested in the topics. GO TO CLASS bc there's no powerpoints, only his lecture. The TA's really decide your fate though. You're graded on 2 essays and 2 exams and the TA's are all different in what they're looking for
This GESM was genuinely a space for students to hold discussions about greek mythology. We wewrote the syllabus a couple times because we realized in the pace we were going, especially with holding so much conversation in class not related to the reading, we would be behind. But the most caring, respectful, and"professional in his field"professor.
Danny was such a delight during my first semester (online) at USC! He never fails to make classic texts relevant to the world today and highlight parallels between antiquity and modernity. He always checked in and encouraged participation in our 100 person lecture sections. He's funny, woke, and enlightened and I feel lucky to have had/ met him.
Danny is always willing to hear the concerns of his students and he transitioned extremely well to an online classroom. I felt truly seen as a person and not just as a student. During zoom uni, it's important to find professors who are understanding and compassionate! The workload was light but participation matters; though its mostly opinion based
Daniel was a really sweet and engaging prof throughout the semester. He was very considerate of the whole pandemic situation and did his best to reduce the load on his students. The class is graded on very few things (2 exams, 2 papers, 2 short reaction papers) and frankly, the material was interesting. Take him because I would love to again.
Danny is a really great prof! He was very nice about the term being online and offered an opportunity to raise our grades with the final. The lectures are pretty dense but he provides a handout before each one with everything that's covered so you don't always have to take notes! This class is definitely worth it just very heavy on the reading
I looked forward to this class every week. The professor is so endearing and funny as a person and I found his lectures so fascinating. I didn't know anything about classics but I learned so much about how various topics related to present-day issues and I'm really glad I took the class. Would recommend!!
Prof. is fun, funny, fair, and passionate about literature. A lot of reading is assigned but, honestly, you can get away with not reading. Youll just have to cram for quizzes and exams. Main Tips: Read a little for the midterm, final, and any papers you have to write. Participate in discussion but participation in lecture is not really required.
Very relatable professor who knows their field well. However, the class is very unorganized and the biweekly quiz content could come from literally anything the prof talked about in 8 hrs of lecture. 2 papers & 2 midterms (free response), grading depends on TA. Would recommend this class for someone already interested in classics, not an easy A GE.
Prof. Richter is a great guy who clearly cares about his students and is passionate about the subject material. I enjoyed the lectures and learned a lot even though I was just taking the class for GE credit. Cons: tons of reading especially at the end of the semester, no lecture slides so it's hard to know what to study/focus on for papers/exams.
super friendly professor. the actual class itself? sucked. hw readings were super long and sometimes hard to understand, lectures were just straight discussions about the readings (no slides, only handouts), four papers, 5 quizzes. if you lookin for an easy A GE that satisfies 2 GE categories, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU LOOK ELSEWHERE!!
Lets start with the pros. Professor Richter is an interesting person who will widen your perspectives. He is also very nice and understanding. Cons: He does not respond to emails, doesnt give grading criteria, is very unclear about what he wants from assignments. He does not moderate arguments - often become hostile and echo chambery.
Class was pretty easy in that readings weren't necessary, Spark notes was good enough. He basically told us every question on the midterm to let us prepare. Learned a lot of about life and history from him. You have to participate if you want a good grade. Cons: Not clear how he grades, nor does he really respond to emails.
Nice Professor, but the class was not great. He was not clear at all with grades, never responded to emails, and was pretty inaccessible outside of class time. Grading was tough too. One plus was that the actual class was super chill and laid back. Little homework due each class, but because there are few assignments its impossible to improve.
Very nice and funny professor, but I hated the class. It was mostly just open-ended discussion that barely related to the readings, and it often devolved into arguments that he wouldn't intervene in. There were only two papers and a midterm, and he wasn't clear about due dates or what we'd be graded on.
he seems like a very nice and genuine guy, but I will never recommend this class to anybody. my TA, Alexis, was awful and a really harsh grader. pop quizzes are really specific from the readings - I would read them twice and still never get an A on them. I don't think I left class any more knowledgeable than I entered. don't take it!
Fun teacher for Greek Myth GESM, genuinely good guy
Lectures are entertaining and helpful for the analysis of all of the readings. Readings slowly increase in length but nothing too crazy. Participation matters in the discussion sections but not really in lectures. Quizzes reference lecture materials, lectures are not recorded. An enjoyable intro to greek mythology and a fun GE course to take.
Lectures were very fascinating, and he's a great guy. I personally don't care for classics, but he made it interesting. Got a little repetitive at the end, but still super interesting and knocks out so many GEs that it was worth it. Prof. is super old school. No PowerPoint, can find all readings online, you should probably read but don't have to
I'm a DS major but I love writing and philosophy. Every time I went to his lectures, I came out feeling like I learned something in the way of how to be a better person and how our cultures today are directly influenced by antiquity. There is clear thought and care that Prof and TA's have regarding Classics. Such a genuine, profound class. 10 stars
Professor Richter is absolutely incredible. His lectures were some of the best I've ever had, period, and he is just the sweetest guy. He's so passionate about the material that he'll often go on very rich and interesting tangents - he loves what he does. Show up to class and take copious notes - 2 open book exams (midterm, final), and two essays.
Profesor Richter was absolutely incredible. He is just such a genuinely warm human being and exudes passion for what he teaches in every lecture. And his tangents, while not tested, are also rich with knowledge. Take detailed notes, (mostly) do the readings, 2 open-book tests and two papers. This is not a class worth missing.
absolute goat
He is a very inspirational and knowledgeable teacher, and he is genuinely interested in the course content. Take notes and pay attention in the lecture (this one is engaging so it's not hard). While attendance is not mandatory he does care about it a lot and may give some heads-up on finals to the kids in attendance
He is an amazing professor. Long lectures (can ramble), very funny, write or print your notes. Exams open-note, the TAs are the real problem, mine was a very tough grader, 20% is the participation/weekly quizzes. Make sure to participate in discussion
He's a fantastic professor. Dr. Richter truly loves what he teaches and gives incredibly interesting lectures. The reading is excessive, but you can get away with not doing it by taking excessive notes. Bear in mind that he teaches without powerpoint and often without writing anything on the board. Great GE to P/NP, but not the best for an easy A.
He is very funny and a great lecturer. I enjoyed his class, and his exams are open notes! The only problem was the TAs, I had Angela and she was a very tough grader since TAs are the only people who grade your things so beware. However, he is very passionate about what he teaches and the class is very interesting, but do not assume it is an easy A
I took his class in 2017, 7 years ago and I still think about this class and what a great professor he was. I think I took this class as a GE... would have loved to take more of his classes. It started an interest in classics for me forsure! Also there was a TA named Russel who was AMAZING as well.
Waited until after I graduated to write this review so I could state with accuracy that he was the worst prof I've had at usc. Never responded to emails, even when grades were on the line. Class was boring, and half the time he would talk about things unrelated to class (could not care less about how much he smoked in college or who he's dated).
will suffer if you don't enjoy the content. only lectures and no slides. need to pay attention in class but its honestly so hard if you don't like the class. TA heavy, does not recommend for GE.
Very kind and fun professor but the class itself is horrid. Lectures are completely verbal with no slides and the hw assignments are readings of hundreds of pages. Everything is graded by TAs who are tough graders. The discussion quiz questions are super specific and regard one line within a 600 page reading. Don't recommend.
Terrible professor, worst class I've had at USC, TA was horrible and tough grader + didn't want to help.
He's a fine professor. He tends to ramble and go off topic, but his insights are cool. Go to lectures if you don't read or understand the material. TA sucked but ask them questions for clarification (and participation credit).
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TAKE PROF. RICHTER'S CORE 102!!! He's super well read (speaks multiple languages, has travelled everywhere) and open to multiple viewpoints, no matter how "out there" they are. He is also VERY lenient with grades, and most of the class is focused on our thoughts on the reading. I wish I could take his class every year.
He's knowledgeable, funny, and respectable. Things I noticed: His class has four assignments, so it's hard to improve. Lenient with due dates, but grading with no given rubric so you don't know how to improve other than comments on assignments. Does not reply quickly to emails. No syllabus online, and in-person handouts are sometimes online.
Professor Richter is a really sweet and caring guy that wants his students to do well. He's really chill and easy-going. The midterm and final were open book and were really straightforward.
